to the person who asked for suggestions on what to sing at a wedding:
ig's "love will come to you"
if you listen closely  to the lyrics its probably not really appropriate but
most people will just notice the refrain stating "where there's now one
there will be two"

i wish i could have heard it for my wedding but i was married in 1982!
i love weddings......

i was wondering if anyone has a recording of the ig show on 12/1 in st.
louis, mo. i asked a while back and people have kindly offered to share
recordings of the lowell and amherst shows, but no luck finding st. louis
yet. i'm new to the group and the recording/trading thing, and would
appreciate any help.

did anyone get any cool ig goodies for christmas? my husband and family
don't share my enthusiasm for them, so i didn't receive any from them
(although i did just buy myself 1200 curfews, finally) my 30th birthday is
in june and my husband is giving me an acoustic guitar so i can learn to
play, which has long been a dream of mine. i hope to pick up a few ig
songbooks at some point so i can enjoy playing their music myself.

thanks and happy new year!

ok the dumb-ass must be getting a good strong hold on me
i count 1,2,3 pics on the bio page and that nice perty big one on the main
page.  so when it says there are  "plenty of new photos in the bio section"
where are they?  am i missing something?  also where are these "raccoon"
photos y'all are talking about? is this the one that's near the bottom of
the bio page?
i do love the opening photo tho.  that is cool.
i even managed to put the image map back together so that i have the whole
thing downloaded.  (yes beccie sometimes it does help to be nearsighted)
and our ever popular evil background chick may be making a new background

i  like amy's hair long.  i remember when they

not that t really matters.  they  are good  musicicians and good people

soon, i know i keep saying that but it really will be

time early in the new year to update both the ig faq

that's an interesting interpretation, but i think of it as something she
wants andy to do.  definitely not in the context of a rape, but not like
breaking her heart either.  looking at the lines leading up to that part in
the song, she asks things she wants from him: "andy will you toss me a
little scrap of something i can taste?", and then she talks about the burnt
pyre.  in that pile of burnt castaways (like rejections), there's still
those "tiny shoots that spring like questions, will you take me?" like a
little bit of possibility among what's dead and hopeless.  she still wonders
hopefully, like a daydream, despite her knowing that he doesn't want her.
that line "will you take me...", i'm sure is meant to be interpreted as both
"will you take me?" and "will you take me out to the fenced field....will
you break me?"  personally, i think the taming/breaking thing is more like
taming this wild desire she has for him.  i have to admit, the image of her
wanting to lose her virginity with him did come to mind with that line, but
i would rather not think of it that way, so i'm not going to.

this song really reminds me of the movie "man in the moon".  not the recent
"man on the moon", but the older movie with reese whitherspoon as a little
girl who's infatuated with the farm boy who's in love with her older sister.
the story in the song, and all the images that make me think of beautiful
scenery and a desire for summer romance are very similar to the movie.  i
can't help but wonder if emily has seen that movie.  anyone else make that
association?
i love the pretty picture this song creates.  sad, but pretty, in a very
visual way.

well, maybe not pissed, dissapointed is probably a better word...

a very sweet person informed me that someone is auctioning one of attack of
the killer b-sides discs on yahoo.

we all know that auctioning boots is bad when people can get it free here,
and that's not the point.

i guess the point is this person (in scotsdale, az) is a listee (has
obtained it from one). and therefore should know better.

if it's you, please remove the auction and don't try again.

this is the first time, as far as i can tell, that a fan-created cdr has
been auctioned. i knew it was probably inevitable - the 'never for sale' bit
is easily removed - but i guess i didn't want to think about it. i don't
really want anyone to be put off creating discs, and i don't want people to
spoil the artwork with 'never for sale' emblazoned across the front artwork,
but if that what it takes, that's what's going to happen.

i can't watch all the auctions all the time, but i try :o)

just want to say thanks to my mystery informant, and twm for helping me take
the appropriate steps...

and if i was more awake, i'd be able to say things more better :o)

you lend this stuff to, and keep them in a safe place, i don't want to hear
any "but it was stolen out of my dorm room at a party" - keep it in your
sock drawer or something, but realize, that what you're holding is worth a
lot, and protect the artists from the sleazebuckets who profit on other's
hard work.

that is all...

sorry for the pissy tone, but...

well, you know...

good grief that was fast.  at least at ebay, when you report something, they
take care of it.  geez, and this in under 5 minutes.  cool!

i'm sending y'all a copy of this, just so you can see what happened(s).

<<one of neil's rarigies cdrs is on ebay.>>

thankyou tara. truly, thankyou.

is this the same guy that is selling it on yahoo right
now?? from scotsdale, az??

neil said he was sure there's a listee there he's sent
stuff to, but doesn't remember who. although this dude
is also selling korn and offspring, so it's probably
not the listee themselves.

the wedgie monster would sure like to get it's hands
on this individuals underwear, i can tell you.

<<know this right now... etc.>>

damn well said.
tara, neil, janet doe and others work hard on these
discs. it taks time to put them together and
coordinate.

miss. amy r. herself has said that it's cool to trade,
but not sell, so let's not go there.

<<sorry for the pissy tone, but...>>

understandable. i know neil was pissed too, although
he's loathe to admit it...

it's cool that ebay have gotten better in responding
to auctions - yahoo seem to be a lot slower. but we
have plans afoot to thwart this dude anyway.

neil told me if nothing happened soon he was going to
auction an email report on how to get them for free.
do i hear $0.01??

your faithful servant

when i got married in '97, i wanted to include the girls in my wedding music
also.  the song that i thought of was power of two.  but then when i listened to
it again, the verse "now we're
talking 'bout a difficult thing and your eyes are getting wet", stuck out in my
head, so i decided
not to use it.

there doesn't seem to be an ig song out there yet, that is completely positive
about being in
love except for we are together, and i don't think that's very good to dance to.
i think it would
be nice to have a good "first dance" song by the girls.

i just got this from someone....

"i would never trade with anyone who makes a person
write a statement that i couldn't make a digital copy
of a cd traded me, when i *haven't even seen* a single
cdr you have made from your own master tapes.
that's not in the trading spirit.
besides, stuff happens - ...sucked when i saw my recordings being
sold, but i haven't stopped trading...
and no, i would never sell a cdr on ebay."

i'm just wondering if anyone else feels this way.  i feel i've been
trying to do a good thing, but if it's upsetting people, the way i'm
handling the cd bootlegs, and making people sign a pledge and all, please
let me know, and i'll weigh the arguments.

but just one point of clarification... those of you who've gotten
stuff from me know i don't trade for the cdrs i make, i just give 'em to you
for cost of artwork printing.

neil throws in more semi-solicited loose change on a tired ol'
subject:

<<i'm just wondering if anyone else feels this way.>>

some mystery person said:
<<i would never trade with anyone who makes a person write a
statement that i couldn't make a digital copy of a cd traded me>>

which is a fair enough position. i can respect that.
although tara's not trading, she's giving up her time to burn
copies for free.

the mystery person continues:
<<when i *haven't even seen* a single cdr you have made from
your own master tapes.>>

so if you had, you would feel different??

i don't know what the mystery person defines 'master tapes' as,
but as i understand it tara was given the masters to the 9:30
club show from the taper together with a blessing to share the
music (not for money, etc. etc.)

i have these discs, and they're excellent. the artwork is far
better than i have produced. so count me as a reference for tara.

<<that's not in the trading spirit. besides, stuff happens>>

true, but again, she's not trading.
even so. there are exceptions. i have material i would only
trade under strict circumstances. in exchange for something
similarly rare and restricted.

and tara says:
<<i feel i've been trying to do a good thing, but if it's
upsetting people, the way i'm handling the cd bootlegs, and
making people sign a pledge and all, please let me know, and
i'll weigh the arguments.>>

i think tara is doing a wonderful thing. the way i see it you
can either:

a) pay $350+ for early recordings 1, 2 & 3 on ebay.
b) get them for blanks, postage and artwork money from tara in
exchange for promising not to copy them.
c) find someone else to get them from.

tara's providing the service, so she gets to set the rules.
promising not to copy them is a small price to pay to save $350.

the reason i don't insist on such promises with the discs i make
is (to quote utah phillips) "the good people don't need 'em and
the bad people don't obey 'em so what use are they anyway?"

i guess i'm just too trusting, at least tara makes people fully
aware of the fact that they shouldn't sell them.

but as the mystery person says, shit happens. i think i'm going
to set up a full ig bootleg awareness website. any legal people
who can offer free advice on this would be welcome to drop me a
line. i'll prolly write to amy too, although if she does read it
she'll think i'm crazy or something...

back to work :o)

heheh - you go.

you guys must be sick of me by now. but.

gonna let y'all into a secret or two. if i see a boot on ebay
that i want, i don't bid on it, i just email the seller and ask
if they'll trade. everytime i've got the cd for a trade instead
of the $50 or so...

i make sure they get an edited trade list to choose from -
common boots, none of the list-made ones. some of these are igs
ones and i'll be offering them soon hopefully.

the downside is that others can just do the same with these
dudes that are offering the fan cds. get his email and just do
the deal in private.

at the end of the day it's the buyer's responsibility to know
what they're letting themselves in for. we just do what we can
and spread the word so that people know what their options are.

and so on. that's it from me for today. honest.

and our ever popular evil background chick may be making a new background
with it (especially if we ask her really nice)
~~!
cool! on a more, well, selfish note, does anyone have a background with _all_
of the album covers on it? or some really good scans of all the album covers?
i am getting rather tired of the background i found at tucows that stopped
with swamp ophelia... any kind people there?

also, and this is much more important, i recieved a new computer only
recently, and it is missing one very important piece that i have not yet been
able to replace- the little 'busy' pointer that animates the cover of rites of
passage. i don't know where i got it in the first place, and the original
computer is resting comfortably in retirment(and many, many pieces) could
somebody possibly donate a copy to the terminally annoyed computer geeks of
new york? or me, even...

now back to your regularly scheduled useful content,
meredith

hey y'all,

as some of you might know, i write for the e-zine jupiter index (which, btw,
was just officially sponsored or supported or given the thumbs up by daemon.
cool, huh?) anyways, a few months ago, my editor did an interview with rose
polenzani- her first interview ever.

i then managed to see and talk to her after the ig concert in nyc in october.
the most facinating thing she had to say was that "your editor asked me some
awfully booring questions". so, after doing a little research, and flexing my
very moderate amount of influence, i got her personal email addy and sent her
some more interesting question (and my editor has not yet forgiven me, either)

anyway, i thought y'all might get a kick out of the the questions she
answered. i have long since forgitten the questions she ignored, and it's
probably better that way.

peace and a booring y2k,
meredith

of course, i'm naked all the time. but you know that already.

it really sucks that someone on the list would do a thing like that!!   the
people on the list are great as far as copying stuff for other people without
having to pay sleezbag bootleggers!!!

i guess people have to spread the word for the fans that don't know any
better.  some fans don't realize you can get stuff for free!!  i know i
didn't for the longest time!!  i have seen jcs on ebay selling for lots of
money and its like wow  you can get it from daemon!!!!    i think the people
buying are just don't realize they can get it by a trade or whatever.  i
still can't believe someone from this list would sell on ebay!!!  that really
sucks big time.  i will also try and email the buyers on ebay to warn them
when i see something not right!!!

hey,

i've already thrown away that edition of the paper, but in the obituary for
curtis mayfield a couple of days ago there was some minor ig content.  (mayfield
was from chicago, but he lived in atlanta for the past 20 years.)

for some upcoming project called "atlanta 2000" [which seems to be some kind of
yearlong focus on making atlanta a focal point for ... i'm not sure what -- they
just had an all-faiths gathering at the georgia dome a couple of weeks back
where they were trying to get people to converge and make alliances across
various religious faiths], they're in the process of recording the official
theme song for the project, which is curtis mayfield's "people get ready".  the
intent is to make this recording the "official atlanta city anthem" from now on.
various luminaries in the pantheon of the atlanta music scene are supposed to
participate, including ig, elton john (a part-time atlanta resident), tlc,
monica, goodie mob(?), outkast(?), travis tritt(?), producers jermaine dupri and
dallas austin (?)and several others.  [if somebody still has the article from
the atlanta journal-constitution, perhaps they can post a transcript of it with
an accurate list of the artists involved.]  don't know when it's slated to be
completed and released.

last birthday update:

ok, here's the deal...went to the thomas & mack arena last night for some
unlv basketball.

the lady rebs were playing at 4:30pm; runnin rebs playing at 7:30pm;

i got there around 6pm (halftime of the lady rebs game) and they werent
charging for parking yet (zing-free!)

i walked in a back way and got into the game for free (zing)

bought some overpriced beer and popcorn & watched the game (unlv won).

hung around for my friends to watch the men (play eastern kentucky) and they
didn't charge me as i was sitting in the student section (38 years old---in
the student section ---- zing)

"invested" in few more beers while the runin rebs barely defeated the
eastern kentucky colonels.

so, 2 basketball games, 3 beers & a large popcorn for less than $20 ----
ka-ching!

other side notes:   there was this great guy sitting behind us providing
quite creative commentary......

favorites (to the eastern kentucky personnel):
** "you're the 6th best team in kentucky" and
** "the lady vols could beat you".

i think he had a few more beers than yours truly.

thanks for everyone's emails etc!

melissa

a site like this would be really awesome.  we all love tara for making us
cdr compies of these rare boots (though i don't quite understand the master
tapes comment.  anyone want to explain this to me).

re: writing amy.  i wrote daemon asking them to tell me what they thought
about changing cds of some of their artists into mp3s and sharing them
online.  i asked them is they disapproved, approved of sharing one or two
songs or all the songs.  they never wrote back.  kinda disappointing. since
they didn't write back, and i am sensitive of possibly taking the money away
from these artists, i'll unshare my daemon things off napster. (not that
anyone ever downloads except at my urging).

that last week i finally received my "shaming of the sun" song book.
took them awhile to get it out but it appears to have been worth the
wait. is written out for both piano and has all the chords and strumming
patterns. also great pictures. so anyone who has been checking out their
local music stores may want to check again or you may want to re-order
it since i know i had mine on order for the past 11 months.

speaking of the whole bootleg thing....tara - i think what you do is great
and i haven't ordered from you cause i am too lazy :p but i was just

do...just curious since most people want the boots for themselves but also
want to trade, not sell. i am a tape trader since i don't have a burner...

just wonderin'!

i forgot who originally posted the request for songs to sing at weddings,
but these are a couple i think would be great.

-"truly, madly, deeply"  by savage garden (always think of a wedding
couple when i hear this song...beautiful!)
-"i knew i loved you"  by savage garden  (another good one)
-"longer"  by dan fogelberg (my friend's sister & brother played the
guitar and sang this her wedding)

let me know if you need the lyrics to any of these songs and i'll gladly send
em to you.

actually tara, neil, and anyone else you have every right to be upset. i know
being an artist who occasionally gives my artwork as gifts that i get upset
when it gets sold ..... some things are just better than money and no one
else can tell you to "deal" if you spent the time making these and giving
them out...i think that its unfortunate that some people are so obtuse that
they dont get that....
well anyway you arent overreacting ....
-jess

much appreciated.....

i just got this from someone....

"i would never trade with anyone who makes a person
write a statement that i couldn't make a digital copy
of a cd traded me, when i *haven't even seen* a single
cdr you have made from your own master tapes.
that's not in the trading spirit.
besides, stuff happens - ...sucked when i saw my recordings being
sold, but i haven't stopped trading...
and no, i would never sell a cdr on ebay."

i'm just wondering if anyone else feels this way.  i feel i've been
trying to do a good thing, but if it's upsetting people, the way i'm
handling the cd bootlegs, and making people sign a pledge and all, please
let me know, and i'll weigh the arguments.

but just one point of clarification... those of you who've gotten
stuff from me know i don't trade for the cdrs i make, i just give 'em to you
for cost of artwork printing.

hi:

just wanted to wish everyone a happy, happy new year.  today, for some reason
isn't a very good day for me, hopefully new years eve will be better. i'm
feeling a little
under the weather and i'm feeling a little stupid about something i did last
week (which,
of course is ig related).

i can't talk to anyone about it and i can't post it here, but if anyone wants to
correspond
to me and help me shake these blues, that would be great.

you can e-mail me at woodlady14@hotmail.com.  again, have a safe and happy
millenium
celebration.

the fact that the giant record labels excert tremendous influence over what
gets airplay, and own some of the radio broadcasting channels don't help
some of our favorite artists (like michelle, rose, and often even the girls)
any.  support low power fm radio! (www.lowpowerradio.org)

that just kinda slipped out. have to spread my propaganda out though.

hi everyone.

i would not be posting this if i did not feel this truly important. i just
finished a book called "what the bible really says about homosexuality" by
daniel helminiak.  written by a catholic priest, it has the radical
perspective that homosexuality is not a sin according to the bible. it uses
the bible itself and the historical context of the time the bible was
written to (very convincingly) prove its point. it's cheap, it's only 100
pages, it's written in simple language while producing and impressive amount
of research and useful examples to drive its point home.  having read it, i
feel as if i have become a bible scholar on homosexuality and can easily
contest any "but doesn't the bible/ torah say..." questions. i know like i'm
sounding a lot like the company has paid me to sell this book but they
really have not. the fact that i am about to buy all these extra copies
(with money i don't have) to lend out and give out to everyone i think needs
to read it is proof enough. i really think that everyone would benefit from
reading this, so check it out.  (it's some $8 on amazon.com, but i urge you
to support a local independent bookstore).

i hope everyone has a happy and safe new year.

another great book is peter j. gomes' "the good book."  this books looks at
how the bible has been used to alienate gay people, women, minorities, jews,
etc.  it offers rebuttals to all this "well, the bible says homosexuality is
a sin" crap.  the book came out a few years ago and is now available in
paperback.  i would highly recommend reading this book too.  peter gomes is
the pastor of the church at harvard university and is considered one of the
top preachers in the nation.  he also came out as gay a few years ago!

peace and happy new year to all!!!

hi all....

i'm happy to report that katie miller received recognition as outstanding
acoustic performer in this year's artvoice music awards, held wednesday
evening dec 29 at buffalo's tralfamadore cafe.  katie, sporting her leather
tuscadero look, with kevin roth on drums, and the hawaiian-shirted leah
zicari on bass, performed a lighthearted cover of jimmy buffett's
margaritaville, and also grass angels, the opening track from strongest girl
in the world.

pamela ryder and i teamed up for a soulful set which included a
much-revamped cover of john lennon's ticket to ride, and a funky version of
the blues chestnut, got my mojo working.  the enthusiastic crowd demanded an
encore, and we responded with another lennon cover, you've got to hide your
love away.  i sang the opening verse, pamela soared during the second verse,
and we harmonized the third verse and the choruses.  it felt great for both
of us to be so well-received by an audience of our peers.

on a sad note, i have to report the passing of katie's aunt steff, early
tuesday morning after a long illness.  my deepest sympathies to katie and
family...(condolences may be sent to katie at nebulousrecords@aol.com),,,

this past week i have been in the process of moving all of my websites,
including the one i created for katie, to freeservers.  i have also
made a number of changes to many of the pages.  the angelfire sites will
remain online for an indefinite period, but all of the links now point to
the new sites.  the addresses are in the signature file below.

best wishes to all for a healthy, happy and safe (arbitrarily man-made) new
year/century/millennium....

and may we all join together jan 1 to sing the opening line to bruce
cockburn's wondering where the lions are....

"sun's up, uh huh, looks ok, the world survives into another day...."

thanks for the recommendation.  i am reading another interesting one,
written by a gay christian man, "stealing jesus: how fundamentalism betrays
christianity" by bruce bawer.  it's a bit more contraversial because it
basically attacks the fundamentalist sects of christian denominations (by
showing their teachings and the teachings of jesus to be polar opposites).
this book is good for anyone who finds themselves in religious arguments. it
gives a lot of useful info (like historical background to counter the
statement that this country was founded based on christian ethics and the
founding fathers were christians as the conservatives of present day are
very fond of saying).  i would love to continue this discussion further with
anyone and would be glad to take it off the list.  email me privately if you
want more recommendation or have some.

julie :)
