hello all,
yesterday (8-26) was a happy day! my first lilith fair and the first
time that i was able to see the indigo girls live. they were awesome! i
just had to share! they performed the following songs (i think they're
in the correct order.):
least complicated
three hits
get out the map (with the dixie chicks)
go
galileo
faye tucker
love's recovery (with sarah mclachlan)
rockin' in the free world (with k's choice)
closer to fine
my only wish is that other's would have been more respectful and not
talked so much through their performance. oh well, can't have it all.
maybe i'll have another chance to see them around here! hope so!
have a good day y'all!
chrystal

lilith fair grads here for a gig and there's a new album out sept.28
the indigo girls love lilith fair so much, they bought the company.
er, not really. amy ray and emily saliers did the next best thing.
the roots-rock veterans rounded up some of their lilith pals from last
year's tour and recorded an album, come on now social, in stores sept.28.
the duo's lilith experience is a far cry from their 1998 tour of american
high schools. it was supposed to give the girls a change to play their
songs and talk about their homosexuality, but not everyone was open to the
idea~~the duo were banned from playing a high school in columbia, south
carolina. ray and saliers managed to schedule the gig in an alternate
venue, but ray says it was disheartening.
"it was really a bummer," she says. "i think the most disheartening
thing about it was when a parent said, 'what we're scared about is that the
kids are going to ask the girls about their lifestyle.' it just made me
depressed that parents couldn't handle their kids asking questions. how
can you raise a child like that?"
despite the incident, ray says the indigo girls are hoping to do another
tour of high schools. odd enough, ray doesn't feel the same way about
lilith fair. while she loves the concept and is sad to see it end, she's
glad the tour is wrapping up on a high note.
"it had a great run and i like to quit while i'm ahead. my own
personality is like, don't drag it out and run it into the mud," she says.
"i know i'm going to be sad, but i've made such great friends."
in fact, ray has a reminder of her fair friends. come on now social
features past and present lilith performers, including sheryl crow,
me'shell ndegeocello, joan osborne, luscious jackson's kate schellenbach
and members of sinead o'connor's band. crow sings back-up on gone again,
osborne adds her vocals to go, while ndegeocello plays bass on a few tunes.
the result is an eclectic disc of roots, rock, dub, reggae and world music.
ray says without lilith, the indigo girls would not have been able to
make the album. but she admits the two didn't set out to make it a lilith
love-in.
"we didn't know sheryl was going to sing. she seemed too busy but she
kept calling and saying, 'i'll do it.'" says ray. "then joan came through."
the indigo girls are no strangers to collaborations. most of their
previous albums feature guest appearances by the likes of r.e.m., mary
chapin carpenter and jackson browne.
even the duo's partnership can be considered a collaboration. the two
don't actually write songs together, but play and sing on each other's
tunes. saliers likes pop music while ray prefers a rawer sound. it's been
that way since the two were teenagers.
"we just don't enjoy writing together, "says ray, now 35. "we've tried
co-writing a couple~~one early on in our high school days. that was pretty
bad."
then what keeps ray and saliers together after 20 years?
"we like each other's music and i think the sum is greater than the
parts," she says. "we're very different from each other as far as music
goes, but we always seem to come together on things. that's the mystery of
it and that's what keeps me going. it pulls me in to work with someone who
is so drastically different from me but who i love so much."
yet ray admits she never expected her collaboration with saliers to last
two decades.
"most people don't even stay married that long," she laughs.
"even though we've never gone out with each other, i think this is the
signifcant relationship of our lives."

let the legacy of lilith live, mclachlan says
shakopee, minnesota (cnn) --
lilith fair founder sarah mclachlan says she hopes other female musicians
will carry on the spirit of the festival. "if there is a legacy of lilith,
it's that other people will take up the torch," mclachlan said backstage
before a concert in shakopee, minnesota. the festival featuring female
performers is in its last week.
mclachlan says she and other performers are calling this, the show's third
season, its final one as well, because they want more free time to
concentrate on other projects and their families. "i'm in total savoring
mode," mclachlan said. "i wish i had something like this when i was
growing up."
for anyone lamenting the last lilith fair, the indigo girls' amy ray
offered a solution. "go out and hear music," she said. "go hear local
bands in your own community. it doesn't have to have the lilith name on
it, to have the spirit."

[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was

[...]
this got me thinking, some of you may remember indicated, the iglist tribute
tapes to, well, you know who. i know 1, 2 & 3 came out but from what i can
work out, 4 died a death, so:
indicated - the next generation is here. if you miss out, you'll be madder
than a boiled owl.
the basic rules:
- - use whatever recording equipment you have available.
- - record your version of an indigo girls song or two.
- - no matter what the sound quality's like, it's performance that counts.
- - the most original interpretaion, the better (believe me).
- - it's got to be an amy or an emily original.
- - can't play an instrument? fake it (like i do), get together with someone
who can or maybe even do a dramatic lyric reading.
some examples of what i did for indicateds past to get you all inspired:
hey jesus - punked up a little.
the untitled song. a damn good version of it.
ghost - as a rap
mystery - in 4/4 time instead of 3/4
shameless self promotion: hear these songs:
http://www.netreach.net/~andineil/igs/covers/covers.htm
it also gives away what i have in store for i4, but what are ya gonna do...
so, just drop me a line with what you plan on recording, i'll email you my
address, and answer any questions you have. with a deadline of say,
september 30, we should have a tape or cdr tree up and running in no time
after that for all to hear.
i'm also thinking of doing a cdr of the best of indicateds past, if you have
any favourites, let me know, or if you know where some people are nowadays
i'd be very interested - i'm thinking particularly of jj, scott ninnerman
and jan denny.
and that's basically it.
cheers :o)
