hey folks,

this is the philadelphia inquirer review that dana
mentioned...

- ---begin article---
indigo girls' adult themes attract a young audience
by a.d. amorosi
for the inquirer

to the surprisingly young crowd that filled the tower theater monday
night for the first of two sold-out shows, you'd think the indigo
girls would be an anomaly.

the duo - the saltier, patti smith-lite amy ray and the softer,
gentler emily saliers - weave an intricate pattern of acoustic and
electric sounds, and speak of adult themes. so it seems odd that
they drew such an audience in a marketplace devoted to hip-hop,
thrash funk and dance pop.

but in raffish live performance, the indigos' varied points of
conflict are boiled down to a predominant theme: freedom and
self-reliance at any cost. surely, that's what appeals to the
knapsack-carrying girls and the boys they brought. as the indigos
sally forth with a bruised but optimistic folk-punk sensibility,
their crowd responds viscerally, closing their eyes, singing along,
creating a vigil.

coming out to a thunderously loud "go" and the bouncing banjo tune
"get out the map," the indigos set the evening's tone, a blend of
bluster and dark provocation balanced with gauzy, earthy
tenderness. the raging guitars, set mostly to ray's "razor on a
wire" sound of "this train" and the hangman-style ballad "sister",
often obscured melodic subtleties. but oddly enough, the indigos
harness big rock well.

that's not to say their big moments are their best - far from it.
grand anthems such as "closer to fine" and the rock-and-rolling
"shame on you" seem syrupy and self-consciously buoyant, like john
mellencamp numbers. their best moments come when the music oozes,
winding its way through serious lyrical intentions.

dark ballads, such as "chickenman" and the everly brothers-style
chamber pop of "ghost," were filled with shadowy chord changes to
match their intimate messages. most effective was the new ballad
"andy," reminiscent of harry chapin's elegant, twisting melody
lines.

opener rose polenzani was a perfect foil to the indigos' big
sound. she goaded her listeners, playfully regaling them with
stories of death, grandfathers and football. along with a
guitarist prone to slide-guitar dust bowl noise, polenzani moaned
and cajoled her way through thoroughly original ambient prairie
folk.

hi everyone,

i have some disturbing news to report: i just talked with the concert manager
here and she told me that there will *not* be any chairs set up for the
show at
dartmouth this sunday. which means that the show will be standing room only at
the front of the stage, and there will be a barricade set up between the crowd
and the stage which will keep the crowd back four feert or so from the edge of
the stage.

hey company of strangers,

'tis me, otra vez.  ay-yi-yi!

[...]

whoa!!!!  amy and emily woke up from yesterday's show, and started actually
talking with us, and listening to our yells--err, questions and song
requests.  here's the setlist before i go on further:

go
cold beer and remote control
three hits
*
trouble
land of canaan
get out the map
sister
peace tonight
**
scooter boys
closer to fine
ozilline
you and me of the 10,000 wars
shed your skin
least complicated
gone again
***
power of two
shame on you

encore:
don't fear the reaper - w/ three finger cowboy (a blue oyster cults cover)
faye tucker
galileo

*(crowd yells for story--emily says what they love about philly--the food,
culture, museums, etc. amy chimes in that they've played in philly ever
since 1986.)

**a couple of girls were dancing in the main aisle, and were sent by
security back to their seats on a side aisle.  someone yells, "they won't
let us dance."  emily: "aaaaah, let them dance. they'll let you dance as the
show goes on."
amy: "here's another song of mine--hmmm, like many others, starts out in
semi-acappella beginnings, and ends in ferocious endings." (scooter boys
starts.)

oh correction: blair cunningham is the name of the new drummer on tour with
a&e--not ben cummings.  (oh well--got the initials right.)

***amy is talking with someone near the front and she mumbles something
about "married".  then she says, "you could do it before the pole, or
after." (what did that mean?) amy then invites a young woman in gray tee
with sleeves cutoff and a navy baseball cap on to the stage.  she takes the
mike and says, "hi y'all."  then pauses.  "rebecca hawks, will you be my
wife?"  (i assume rebecca said yes.) then emily shook hands with the onstage
woman, and amy reached for a hug.

[...]

overall, the crowd and the indigo girls & co. just made this night so extra
special.

but isn't it great that ig is getting acknowledged?
~renee

just another tuesday

october 5, 1999

by jim derogatis pop music critic
<snip>
melissa etheridge, "breakdown" * 1/2; indigo girls, "come on now social" ***

[review of "breakdown" snipped...]

the indigo girls fare much better on their latest. perhaps
invigorated by lilith fair, amy ray and emily saliers deliver a
hard-driving set of folk-rock decorated by a galaxy of star cameos:
joan osbourne on "go," rick danko and garth hudson on "gone again,"
and sheryl crow, me'shell ndegeocello and luscious jackson's kate
shellenbach at various points.
the reason for such widespread respect is that the indigos continue
to prove that music is a viable vehicle for social change without
ever resorting to preachiness. they prefer to let the music speak for
itself, and it does, loud and clear.
