hi folks!

i'm usually a lurker, but my girlfriend found this, and i thought i'd
pass it on to y'all.

"it's officially a decade: the indigo girls mark 10 years of creating
the soundtracks for our lives"

by robin stevens
for the gay.com network

if it weren't for the lilith fair, you'd be listening to a very
different indigo girls on their new album this week.
"the lilith fair was a blast...we met our whole new band on the lilith
fair last year. and all these great women who we met on that tour came
and played on our most recent record. it was a really great experience
for spiritual and musical inspiration," amy ray told a group of
journalists gathered in atlanta on september 20 for the national
lesbian and gay journalists association annual convention.

by all lilith fair accounts, it was ray and emily saliers who brought
musicians together for late-night jams at most of the concerts they
played during the lilith fair's three-year run. their collaborative
bent paid off during production of their new album, come on now social,
when
musicians including me'shell ndegeocello, kate schellenbach (from
luscious jackson), joan osborne and sheryl crow made the trek to the
recording studio to jam with the girls (as fans like to call them).
the jams all add up to an album that remains true to the girls'
trademark style, with a greater musical range than they've achieved on
any previous album.  a couple of tracks, including "go" and "trouble,"
are the most successful to date at conveying the rock-the-house energy
that draws fans again and again to their live performances.

in their discussion with journalists in attendance at the atlanta
convention, saliers and ray said they were both happy to be openly
lesbian-now. "early, early on in our careers, back when we were playing
in little five points bar in atlanta, amy was perfectly ready to come
out and talk about it in the press and was open in her life, and i was
open in my life but not wanting to talk about being lesbian in the
press," saliers told the group. "i had a couple of reservations. first,
i was just scared. secondly, i didn't want to be known purely as a
lesbian band before a band...i'm long since over that."  "it's a really
good thing to be out," she added. "the most important thing is that we
have so much response from people who are grateful we came out...it's
important as far as the evolution of the movement that people are
honest
about their sexuality. it's the only way we're going to get people to
get rid of some of their ignorance about who gay people are."

but they don't think it's without its price. "i feel like our audience
has grown and i don't feel like it's hurt us in our audience," said
ray. "i feel like it's hurt us in the media-in rolling stone and spin,
in radio promotion and in the mainstream sexist rock-and-roll that ties
sexism and homophobia into one neat package for us." it's not just the
music industry. last year the girls made news when several south
carolina high school appearances they'd scheduled were cancelled by
school administrators at the behest of concerned parents. "they didn't
want their kids having role models who were lesbians," said ray.
in true indigo girls style, though, the pair demonstrated the power of
grassroots politics. they scheduled alternative shows at all-ages clubs
and and inspired the students-many of whom staged school walkouts-to
organize. "in the end it was a very positive politicizing experience
for
everybody," said ray.

there's an article at wallofsound.com that says the girls will be at no. 34
selling 41,000 copies.  now, i'm pretty sure that commercial success is not
one of the girls' top priorities, but didn't sots come in at no 7 or
something like that.  this seems like an incredibly steep drop off.  oh,
well, i love it!!!

hi y'all,

just back from the lowell show.....it was an interesting night. i'd like to
write a review just glowing with warmth, love and harmony but i have to be
cranky instead! oh no, it wasn't our sheroes....they were in fine form as
always. rather, it was the crowd. this review should be titled, "who let
the baboons out of the zoo for the evening?"...it was absolutely amazing.

[...]

økay, enough bitching...the set was great, a nice mix of old and new...i
don't have the exact setlist, but it included : peace tonight, land of
canaan, this train revised, faye tucker, ozilline (can you beat that one
live? i thinks not!!), ghost, power of 2, trouble, and they *opened(* with
closer to fine.

[...]

they looked great, sounded tight, and the butchies were, of course,
deeeelightful as the openers. but it was hard to enjoy it, really, given
the assholes surrounding.

[...]

hmph,
sus
