"indigo girls show thier true colors"
by kevin raub

it's been 10 years since the indigo girls first hit it big with "closer to
fine," the breakout hit from their 1989 self-titled epic records debut.

but anyone who might suggest that the girls - amy ray and emily saliers -
spent
the decade merely re-creating one acoustic folk ditty after another will
get an
earful from ray.

"i think people decided what we sounded like because of our first song, and
they've never heard anything since," says ray, sounding off from a car as she
hustled along interstate 75, just south of chattanooga, tenn.

"so when they talk about us, they talk about us in a certain way musically,
which we haven't been in five years. i get frustrated. people put us in a
certain category and they don't even know what we do anymore."

the indigo girls, who tonight kick off a three-night stand at the beacon
theater, also get pigeon-holed because of their sex, ray says. "i don't think
male artists have the same problem, but with women - it's like, whatever
you do
first establishes your identity and it's hard to change it.

"joni mitchell is a good example. she went through constantly experimenting
and
people had issues with that a lot of the time. but then someone like neil
young
does it, and it's cool." the girls explore a multitude of musical genres and
styles on their just-released seventh album, "come on now social."

the album, the duo's most diverse to date, explores full-on punk
("compromise"), back-country bluegrass ("ozilline"), stadium-size rock and
roll
("go"), irish-infused jigs and middle-eastern-flavored wailing ("faye
tucker"),
and bouncy new orleans-inspired pop ("peace tonight").

not only does the album seem like a musical pilgrimage around the world, but
the credits read like a who's-who list of female rock.

the girls received help from nearly everyone in the lilith fair contingent,
including sheryl crow, joan osborne, me'shell ndegeocello and luscious jackson
drummer kate shellenbach. not surprisingly, the album packs an outspoken
political punch. the epic "faye tucker," the album's longest tune, is inspired
by the case of karla faye tucker, the first woman to be executed in a texas
electric chair since the civil war.

ray, a strong anti-capital-punishment advocate, found the circumstances
surrounding faye tucker's death in 1998 more than a little hypocritical.

"i thought it was weird that the christian right, moral majority-esque people
took up her case beacuse she was reborn. they worked so hard to try and save
her from the death penalty, when normally it wouldn't matter to them."

the butchies were awesome.  my gf wasn't too thrilled with them, but
goodness!  and their drummer abosolute kicked ass!  good drummers are hard to
find, but wow....  i found one!
  then the girls performed...
  fashion report:
amy was wearing a red fire department jacket and then a red t-shirt (star
trek -- hee hee).  emily was wearing like a black (?) button down shirt over
a white t-shirt, and then her blue camoflo...camaflo... whatever... pants.
oh, amy was wearing pants too, just can't remember what they looked like.
  set list:
this is sketchy after the third song, and has holes and is in the wrong
order. all i know is, the following songs were all performed.
  go
  gotm
  chickenman (i almost died)
  trouble
  peace tonight
gone again (part of the encore)
  ozilline
  shame on you
  compromise
  andy
  faye tucker
  tried to be true
closer to fine (middle of the set)
  galileo (last song)
  johnny rotten
  love will come to you
ghost (was this part of the encore?)
  power of two
  shed your skin
eck, what else?  i know there was more...

[...]

amy was having issues with her electric guitar (turned out she'd hit the
off switch accidently), so we got a big question and answer period.  i
thought to ask to play guitar with them on closer to fine, but too late....
but this group of girls asked if the could sing with them at some point, and
they were like, "sure."  ha.
at one point emily said, "don't go posting that on the internet." but i
can't remember in refrence to what.  anyone?

october 11, 1999

******************
and i thought the album was great!    amy and emily prove once again that
even if it's perfect on the album, it'll be 10 times better in person. ok, so
here's my personal review.   i'm new at this...stick w/ me.  and feel free to
post any further commentary.  here's the set list:

go - incredible in person. such power. amy was dancin' up a storm
peace tonight - great single.
tried to be true - crowd loved it
get out the map - emily told everyone to sing along!!!  and sing along we did!
scooter boys - the girls jammed for a bit during this one.  it was great.
soon be to nothing - beautiful as always
ozilline - bigger response then i expected.
cold beer and remote control - crowd loved this one.  how could you not?!
shed your skin
closer to fine - crowd helped out a lot.   ig fans at their best.
sister - wasn't as popular w/ the crowd. not too many people singing along on
that one. i was!!!!
least complicated - someone shouted for them to play this. they said it was
their last song but the                     would skip to it.
*new amy song* - if anyone knows what it is. please post it or e-mail it to
me privatly.  beautiful.
compromise - amy in pure punk.
power of two
faye tucker - much better live then on the album
trouble - great response.   crowd must like emily's new style. haha
shame on you - amazing.

encore:
ghost - no words to describe this one i'm sure y'all know how i feel.  ;)
gone again - one of my favs on the new album.....i was praying that they'd
play it.   woohoo
galileo - new closing song?    worked for ny!!!

tidbits:

the butchies opened for the girls.  they were great. i'd never heard them
before. gonna have to buy the album now.  they told a cute story about how
they wanted to try on the outfits that they were wearing and how the sales
girl didn't know which dressing room to unlock ( girls or guys ).  during one
song amy came out on stage w/ her tamborine and jammed w/ the butchies. she
sang the chourus' too. it was awesome.

emily was wearing all black again, w/ green suede shoes. amy was wearing clue
jeans w/ a blue button down and a black tank top underneath.

the crowd was great. no stage rushing, just pure indigo spirit.

a little boy came onstage and handed amy some flowers. she thanked him and he
went back. a few minute later he came back again and they talked, you
couldn't hear what they were saying but she shook his hand and then gave him
a hug. it was adorable.

the new band kicks. they sounded great.   it's always a pleasure to hear the
girls onstage ..just them and their guitars....but they sounded amazing w/
the band.

allright,  if i'm missing anything. feel free to add.    anyone w/ upcoming
tix - your in for a real treat.   i'll be grinning for days.  indigo dreams
to you all.
<3,
danielle snow
