the girls were wonderful last night.  here is a review i found in the
dallas morning news.  very favorable.  amy remarked how "you never know
if anyone will show up" in dallas.  the girls have no airplay here.
anyway, here is the review.

blue streak
indigo girls concert tears off 'folk' label

10/29/99

by thor christensen / the dallas morning news

amy ray instructed thursday night's crowd at the bronco bowl to dial up
their local radio station, request an indigo girls song, and then
scream "girls rock!" into the phone.

for a bit of between-song banter, it was also a perfect summation of
the indigos' hard-driving performance. while the duo generally gets
typecast as "folk rock," ms. ray and emily saliers did everything in
their power to play down the former and the crank up the latter.

and it worked like a charm, starting with "go," the hell-raising
show-opener from the group's new come on now social cd. with its
fuzzed-out guitar and pile-driving beat, "go" could pass for some lost
pearl jam gem, and ms. ray delivered it with the perfect grunge-rocking
gusto, slamming her fist onto her guitar neck and wailing with abandon.

the duo kicked out the jams again on the uber-punky "compromise" -
sounding a bit like the ramones this time - and breathed new fire into
old rockers such as "come on over now." and even the mellower
banjo-mandolin tunes grew teeth: "trouble," another new song, was
bluegrass at its heaviest, while "shame on you" boasted some snarling
power chords.

while the indigos started dabbling in harder styles years ago, this
headfirst dive into rock was a welcome twist. for one, it kept them
away from some of their more gooey love tunes (though they did sneak in
"power of two").

but more important, it gave ms. ray the ideal outlet for her raspy,
howitzer-like voice. instead of over.singing the ballads - as she often
did in the past - she toned down her voice on the slow tunes and saved
the decibels for the rockers.

ms. ray and ms. saliers still sing some of the prettiest harmonies this
side of the everlys, as they showed with "closer to fine," the song
that launched their careers 10 years ago. but it wouldn't be an indigo
girls show without tons of vocal help from the crowd, as well.

during "kid fears," another decade-old tune, the crowd filled in
perfectly for michael stipe, who sang co-lead on the recording. and
even though come on now social came out just a few weeks ago, the
audience seemed to know every word to every song.

radio stations might be ignoring the band's new cd. but as long as
their fans stay as rabid as the ones at the bronco bowl were, the
indigos should be around for another decade or two.

indigo girls - come on now social (epic/57:28/i): the indigo girls, amy
ray and emily saliers, are probably the most consistently intriguing
singer-songwriter duos to have come out of the folk-rock revival of the
late '80s.

here they are with album number seven for epic, a musically exuberant
and swirling, lyrically fresh and surging collection of songs that deal
with the comforts and complications of life, feminist concerns and the
uneasy relationship between mankind and the environment.

ray and saliers harmonise through the songs so naturally and with such
precision that you'd think that's what they've been doing all their lives;
and indeed, they have.

but while much of the album's charm lies in their voices soaring
blissfully together, the contrast in their registers during the solo
stretches also makes for a varied mood. ray's gutsy alto is perfect for
such rocking pieces as go and compromise while saliers' delicate soprano
is exquisitely evocative on the achingly beautiful ballad soon be to
nothing and the midtempo hum-dinger peace tonight.

the songs just roll along with a natural swing, enhanced by lilting
mandolins, guitars, accordions and banjos. at times it all gets so richly
rustic that if you close your eyes, you'll be transported to the kind of
green heaven that, thanks to mass-development advocates, now exists mainly
in your imagination.

guests like luscious jackson, me'shell ndegeocello and garth hudson and
rick danko of the band support the girls with a great generosity of spirit
and inspiration.

the closer, faye tucker, based on the true story of karla faye tucker
who upon her execution last year became the first woman to be sentenced to
death in the state of texas since the civil war, is a real stirrer. with
its celtic martial rhythm and ray's powerful rumination on mortality, the
song just mesmerises, and the wordless vocals of natacha atlas towards the
end is seductively eerie.

the two hidden tracks that come after that are also delicious, the first
in a dark, haunting way and the second in a graceful, soothing manner.

come on now social is without a doubt one of the finest folk-rock
recordings of the year, if not this decade.

indigo girls, come on now social

come on now social
indigo girls
epic

* * * 1/2

the indigo girls have successfully redeemed mainstream's affected
impression of folk music. with their seventh full release, amy ray and
emily saliers have taken the engine apart, replaced parts and overhauled
their seminal sound.

their previous release was hindered by an overambitious new, gruff sound.
in contrast, "social" is like a homecoming dinner, with a lazy susan of
their influences, not the least of which is the contemplative yearning they
originally championed. opening with the gutsy, machinistic "go," they
casually recede into pastoral, "friends of flannel" numbers like "gone
again" and "peace tonight."

no indigo artifact would be complete without the pulpit, and their
conscientious lyrics have a history of overshadowing the music. but the
pamphlet thumping is unobtrusive this time, which frees them to revisit
their talent for salt-of-the-earth rhapsody.

wow!!  last night's show in dallas was a night i'll never forget.  the
listmeet was tons of fun :))  thankfully, we didn't get thrown out the
restaurant for rearranging the furniture to accomodate all 10 of us, and
then, even though we all had different seats at the arena, all but one of
us managed to stay together before and after the show.

the butchies, aka the band that ritalin forgot, opened and were
great....watch out kate!

amy and emily were outstanding, as usual, and seemed to be enjoying
themselves.  they were talkative and were surprised that we sang along to
every song, old and new.  they said something about not being sure if
anyone would show up because dallas radio never gives them any air time and
then asked us to call the stations and request them!  amy said she liked
the way we sang oziline....they mentioned the crosswords that they liked to
do and, since they played at the bronco bowl (a bowling alley/arena), they
also professed their fondness for bowling :))  emily said that she was the
best among the band at crosswords but then admitted she wasn't...she also
said that amy was the best at rock and roll....

fashion report:  amy was wearing jeans and a funky beige and rust colored
shirt.  emily was wearing all black and had on the glitter eye shadow.
they both looked beautiful :))

setlist:
go
trouble
three hits
get out the map
scooter boys
andy
oziline
power of two
compromise
airplane
shed your skin
cold beer and remote control
gone again
ctf
kid fears
least complicated
shame on you

encore:
everything in its own time
faye tucker
galileo

i still can't believe they sang airplane!  andy was also a pleasant
surprise.  compromise was raucous and perfect and the soul-thrashing scream
in faye tucker was quintessentially amy.  emily did quite a bit of
screaming as well :) we all did....

what a blessed night :))))))

hey gang- an interesting lil' thing... there's a new collection of double
disc sets out by sony collectively called the soundtrack of the century-
they're also collected in one big, beautiful box set with a big ol' coffee
table book if you've got 330 bucks to spare- i'm hoping santa really likes me
this year... anyway, indigo girls made it onto the folk, gospel, and blues
comp with "galileo". :) i think this is extremely cool. (sidenote: one of my
faves, bic runga actually has a song on the international comp! woohoo!) of
course all the songs on these compilations are by sony artists from sony
albums, which explains the huge empty space where rent belongs on the
broadway set. <grin>

hi folks,

well, "peace tonight" has earned a place on 101.9/wtmx's playlist, which is
only about 20 songs long.  i've already heard in twice this evening!  on
their website, you can vote on all the songs, and it's doing slight better
than so-so, coming in with about 70% of the people saying they think it's
"good" or "a favorite."  so i thought i would send an email out here, so
that everyone who is so inclined can go vote on it.  :-)  here's the
url:  http://www.wtmx.com/cgi-bin/musictest/musictest.cgi?start.  if that
doesn't take you right to the playlist you can find it by taking the "on
the air" link from the first page, which is at www.wtmx.com.

cheers,

unreleased amy song...]

hey all-

i just got neilly's fab bootleg, to be expected.  is anyone else in love
with "hey little darlin?"  please tell me i'm not the only one.....

so, for your reading pleasure, i've typed out the lyrics. there are a few
places i'm not sure of, y'all help me out!

chris

i said hey little darling
there's something you should know.
this thing's gonna outlive us all
this thing, it won't let us go.
it's gonna break us own to nothing
gonna eat us from the inside out.
i said hey little darling
i don't want you feeling the fallout.

i said the cancer finally took him.
i was watching the trucks pull in.
me and your daddy we had a job
under the ground mining uranium.
some things your daddy leaves you?
and some things he don't.

some things are gonna be here anyhow
some things just won't.
one thing i want you to understand
is that you ain't gotta be no mining man
i course the day that i went down
and i pulled that shit out of the ground.

now we were living over in nevada,
that's where your people come from
grandma would take me and your daddy
on down to the gunnery range
we'd sit and watch the bombs blow
until the sun goes down;

all those colors running like a painted desert
and you get to see it now.
the government boys had something so damn secret
they had to hide it i the desert sand.
[out there ?] the sky's so big, and there ain't no mistaking it,
who's got the winning hand.

i said i've been all the way to alaska, now
to a town called point of hope
they took some of what we've got down here
to see how it would grow.
i hear the lichen [??????]
now it's running through the caribou.
and soon, little darling, you'll get to feel it too.
you'll get to feel it too.
