report from front row center. . .

fashion report:
amy--the black tank top (chest tattoo visible); blueish silk (?) button down
over it; blue jeans; those blue suede platforms
emily-- black pants; white t-shirt; green (?) button down over it;
didn't notice what shoes; glittery eyelid stuff

setlist (complete, but not in order):

go
trouble
land of canaan
cold beer & remote control
peace tonight
three hits
power of two
shed your skin
shame on you
get out the map
tried to be true
closer to fine
ozilline
faye tucker
johnny rotten
gone again
galileo
or (w/ rose)
least complicated
soon be to nothing

fun moments:

* amy completely blew tried to be true. . .twice!  it was great!  she was
like, "i can't believe i fucked that up," and then emily said "i think i
fucked that up that time."  cute as hell.  then amy said that this was
becoming more like a comedy act than a music act.  (they started again at
the second verse and it was great)

* emily said that she and amy had a bet, and then asked the audience who
knew how to spell barq's root beet, because it was one of the crossword
clues they had been working on the whole day.  emily won.  amy said she
better donate it to charity, and emily said, "i'll donate the money that amy
ray owes me."

* when they introduced the band, amy kept prefacing the women with "lovely
lady," and then claimed that blair the drummer was the male ping pong
champion.  (they had a ping pong table set up in the lobby for awhile before
they opened the doors)

* amy said at one point that the people they encountered at the hotel
they were staying at were really nice and of course the crowd went nuts,
because they inferred people in our community were nice.

* someone requested strange fire (actually, maybe it was several people) and
they had a little conference about whether they remembered it.

* something i got to see because of where i was, happened when amy was
introducing the band and sulli had been tuning emily's guitar off-stage, and
almost ran out to her with it while amy was
introducing the bass player and emily gave sulli a little wave of the
finger and shook her head, indicating that it was not the right time to run
onto stage and then sulli started making these pouty faces and emily
laughed.

* during gone again, amy replaced "melbourne wrecking crew" with "arcata
wrecking crew."

that's about it.  great show!  rose opened and was incredible!  there's
someone else on this list who probably has more exciting things to report
than me, but i'm not saying anything. . .ahem, kelly!
:)

subject: [ig-news] kmtt radio interview with emily - long

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

emily did a phone interview today with kmtt 103.7 in seattle that i thought
ya's might be interested in hearing.  i am typing it out and am not the best
speller so forgive the typos and punctuation errors in advance.:)  sorry if
its too long for some, i just thought they did a good job of interviewing her
and thought some may be interested.
***************************************************************
kmtt-  emily, seattle loves you.
emily-  thats a beautiful thing.
kmtt-  (laughing) so the show is friday the 12 of november, this friday, and
you are
also doing a little pre show intimate concert for some mountain contest
winners during lunch time too.
emily-  thats right
kmtt-  top secret, much appreciated.
emily- sure
kmtt- emily the new cd, "come on now social", the last time we talked to you
guys i think it was just coming out, and its been just about a little over 10
years since your first album.  i didn't really realize this because i know
that when you first put that album out only stations like "the mountain" were
the only ones that really played the indigo girls, and now you are huge hits
up and down the radio dial.  but that first album sold like 2 million copies
and got you guys a grammee and you were like practically right out of college
right?
emily- yah thats right yah we were like 24 or 5 something like that
kmtt-  were you a little surprised by that back then?
emily-  we have been surprised by everything.  i mean it actually took us
awhile to sell 2 million copies of it.  but yah we were really surprised at
the success and early on rem kinda took us under their wing and they gave us
an opening leg on their tour
and that really helped and there were some things that gave us some momentum
early on but yah it was great
kmtt-  it always struck me that you guys, kinda like rem always have just
sorta done, you know, what you do and gone in different directions at various
points, but you never get the sence that you've really catered to any fad,
allthough you incorporate, you know, sounds and techniques from whatever's
happening currently in music. but you seem very lucky in that you have always
been able to just do what the indigo girls want to do and its worked.
emily-  i dont think that we would be able to just be ourselves and not be
able to do that, you know, it just comes naturally to us to just do our thing
and actually the record company has been good to not meddle in that, and you
know, we've never really had a radio hit. we dont really get played on the
radio. you all are very kind to us thank you. but we dont get played that
much we've never really had a top 40 hit so we are a grass roots band. we
keep our carreer going by touring and making the records we want to make and
there's alot of word of mouth, and you know, just gettin  out there on the
road alot. so thats the kind of band we are.
kmtt-  you know you've recorded with alot of big shots back in the 80's as
you said with michael stipe and what happens, i mean do you ring people like
jackson browne and joan osbourne and sheryl crow how do you guys work on that
collaboration thing?
emily-  we do ring them actually but first we meet them.  like lilith fair
was amazing because we got to meet so many great artists and sing with them
durring their sets and they sang with us during ours and so we just had this
comoradeship and when it came time to make the record we just called people
up and said do you want to come sing or play on the record and those who are
on the record said yes.
kmtt- are you saying that some people would say no emily?
emily-  not many people have said no actually umm bry cooter (sp?)said no
kmtt-  oh really?
emily-  a long time ago
kmtt-  was that for scheduling reasons or phylosophical reasons?
emily-  im not sure we didnt really ask him we just politely said ok..
kmtt- (laughing) sorry we bothered ya.
emily-  he is amazing but i think that was on our first record actually 10
years ago
kmtt-  so really the lilith fair experience for you was like a big networking
thing where you make new friends and then work them into your records.
emily-  yah it was fantastic.  i mean amy and i have always, even when we
were a bar band and making our own records before we got signed to epic, we
always had friends play with us on our sets and we always had guests come
play with us on our independent records, so its just that now we get to, umm,
hang out with people who are a little more well known, so.. but its just our
spirit.
kmtt-  you've been friends since grade school right?
emily-  yup
kmtt-  ok so is this a yin and a yang thing 'cause not many groups or
friendships last that long these days.
emily- i know i think it has to be 'cause we're really different, we write
different songs, we express ourselves differently, and have different
personalities, and i have alot of respect for amy. she's taught me alot and
she's a great person, and you know, i treasure our friendship.so for whatever
reason we've just been able to keep a balance going for all the years and its
still fun.
kmtt-  emily saliers is on the line with us from the indigo girls. so is this
true what we read that you live in the city and amy's more of a country girl?
emily- that's true
kmtt-  you sorta have different lifestyles?
emily-  that's true.. very true
kmtt-  so what do you do when you are not actively recording and rehearsing
or whatever, i mean do you get up and walk the dogs, or go to the movies, or
go to the gym or...
emily- the dog runs out in the back yard so i don't have to walk her, and i
love to work out, yup, i have like a personal trainer.... i like to play golf
kmtt-  yah? whats your handicapp?
emily- yup i suck im tellin ya i'm so bad i dont even have one!
kmtt- (laughing)but ya like it
emily- i love it!
kmtt- and you dont get pissed off when ya, you know shank a shot?
emily-  are you kidding!
kmtt-  so thats good so you have the right attitude then.
emily- oh beautiful day.  i like to hang out with my friends, and my parents,
and my family, im a pretty social person so... just relax
kmtt- yah you know my partner here mike is a golfer and i'm not, and it
always just seems to me like, you know, i love bein' out in the outdoors
too.. but i could get some real exercise while im doing it instead of just,
you know..... while if you play like emily and i you do get alot of exercise!
emily-  thats true (laughing) i dont play golf to get exercise thats for sure.
kmtt-  just the scenery itself is great just ot be out there is so cool.
emily-  oh its just fun you just get together with you buddies and nobody
cares you get to ride around in a little cart.
kmtt-  (laughing) do you drink beer emily?
emily-  you know i can't tell you this.. yes of course i do
kmtt-  ok your a golfer then!(laughing) well i  have to say i do have respect
for any sport you can play and consume an alcoholic beverage at the same
time.  bowling is in that same category.
emily-  there is a point of diminishing returns though you have to be careful
of that..
kmtt-  yah i've noticed that in bowling too, yah..  a sport where you can
drink and smoke and yet still play... ya gotta like that!  ahh allright emily
ahh what were gonna play off of this album now is, speaking of beer, "cold
beer and remote control"...
emily- allright
kmtt-  and ahh this is your song right?
emily-  yah it is, i didnt actually have one person in mind while i was
writing this song so i suppose it could be a man or a woman, but its just
about, you know becoming despondant and sorta giving up.  its meant to jerk
ya around a little bit because when people hear that line, "cold beer and
remote control", it makes them laugh, but then its like wait a minute this is
like serious subject matter so....
kmtt- yah powerful stuff..yah
emily- thank you
kmtt- well we're looking forward to having you back in seattle at mercer
arena friday night and i think people still might be able to buy tickets for
that..
emily- yah and a great band the butchies are gonna open the show and they are
formally some members of team dresch (sp?) and they are from the northwest so
they are a great band so catch them they are at 8:00.
kmtt- gosh that was my nickname when i was a kid butchie. ya now i really
have to go.
emily-  a cute name and they are a great band
kmtt-  emily thanks for checking in, and we will see you this friday
emily-  thanks ya'all bye!
kmtt- bye! and this is one of emilys songs, shes a golfer! who knew, i didnt,
this is one of her songs from the new cd " come on now social" on new music
tuesday, the indigos on 103.7fm  the mountain.
