[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo

i picked up this magazine today (you can only get it at plan 9 stores in va)
and thought i'd share this part with y'all, since i really identify, as i'm
sure a lot of you do.  it's always good to know ya have something in common
with the girls:

amy - speaking of homosexuality in ig songs - "i try to make these points
implicitly. like in "go", i said, "did they tell you it was set in stone /
that you'd end up alone?"  that's something my parents used to say to me all
the time about being gay.  they thought that heterosexual marriage was the
only way to have companionship.

also, i thought this part was interesting:

amy, on jewel - "...she's really cool.  i think she's super-intelligent, and
that might make it hard for her......i had some preconceived ideas of her
before we met her, but she really was nice.  we jammed with her and she's
really talented.  we played and she sang off the top of her head for about
fifteen minutes, and all the words made sense, you know?  that's talent, if
you ask me.  but i can see how you'd think she's pretensious."

other than that, the article is stuff that we all already know, although,
she did say that "emily always talks about rites of passage being a really
important record to her.  rites made a mark on us.  it sent us in a new
direction, i think" - and i never knew they felt like that.

take care y'all,
tara

well, it was 550 miles of driving in one day, but wow!  the portland
concert was amazing.  a much bigger venue than i was expecting, but they
managed to fill it pretty well.  the sound was a bit off for the
butchies set (or do they always mix their vocals so deep into the mix
that you can't hear a word they're saying?), the crowd was friendly, and
the energy was pretty high, despite the girls looking kind of tired.
amy was drinking hot tea during the show -- fighting off a cold or
something?  anyway, the set-list and show summary:

go
trouble
reunion
cold beer and remote control
(a&e traded comments here about how spacey they'd been all day.  amy
pointed out that they'd spent the past couple of days in humboldt
county,
and perhaps this was fallout from that.  *grin*)
chickenman
love will come to you
gone again
("this song is a kind of letter that i wrote to try to keep from doing
the same mistake over and over again.  have you ever noticed how you
do that, make the same mistake over and over, until it's just a
comfortable
little pattern of safeness?  well, i had to write a song to break out
of that.)
peace tonight
scooter boys
closer to fine
sister
least complicated
johnny rotten
get out the map
faye tucker
(emily broke a nail and commented on that and kept looking at it after
every song for the rest of the show.)
shame on you

encore:
philosophy of loss
(!!!!!  i had no idea that this was coming.  what a treat!)
ozilline
galilleo

overall, a great show.  they're really falling into a solid, steady
space with this tour.  phoenix (11/1) had a bit better energy, but i
think that was from the smaller venue and more intimate crowd.  i can't
wait until boise next tuesday!

this anecdote is from a
friend in portland who went backstage last night with the us women's soccer
team....

"it was awesome, we had unbelievable seats and then we gotta go back stage.
too cool...we all met the indigo girls.  they are going to be in australia
in may ... they have no idea who is opening for them in australia... "

cons is the current planetout pick... here's the blurb:

indigo girls: come on now social
now they return with their seventh lp of potent rock-lore. amy ray and
emily saliers have what simon and garfunkel had, that ethereal harmony
connection that must be divine. but unlike on any of their previous
albums, the songs on come on now social find banjos and soft-stringed
acoustics on the back burner, making room this time for snares,
distortion, and more "indie-tude" than ever. "gone again" and "ozilline"
are festive, frolicking bluegrass tunes that smile and knee slap. but
the lead track, "go," gets gone with plunging kick drums and driving,
angular guitar riffs. even on saliers' snuggly call to action, "peace
tonight," there is a horn section. be it sinead o'connor's enlisted band
bringing about this feisty approach, or just the end of an era, come on
now social finds the indigo girls with their same heartache and protest,
just a lot more voltage.
