hey folks,

a friend of mine has two tickets to the ig concert tonight in chicago that
someone stuck her with at the last minute.  would anyone like them?  they
are seats l218 and l220 in the 2r section.  (that's slightly right of
center, in not worse than the twenty-fifth row--i forget how the seating
chart works.)

if you want them, call my friend, sara, at (773) 271-3296.  if you can't
get her, call me on my cell phone (773) 415-1514 and we will meet at the
theater a little before 7:30pm, when the show starts.  first caller gets
the tickets.  she'll sell them at cost (or maybe best offer, i don't know)
which was $41 each, or $82 for the pair.

thanks,
margaret

according to pollstar.com, the butchies will be opening the iu-bloomington
show this coming thursday. i was kinda hoping for rose p., but this will
be fun anyway. (for those who may have missed my earlier post, michelle
malone is opening the indianapolis show on tuesday, 12/7.)

i still have one student ticket that probably needs a good home -- 9th row
- -- $25 (face value). must have iu-bloomington student id to get in with
this ticket.

cheers,

- -anne

i'm not sure if this has been mentioned before or not, but as i was
straightening the magazines at work yesterday i got emily saliers' name on
the cover of atlanta city mag as one of atlantans making a difference or
something like that.  there's an awesome full page picture of her and her
three watershed co-owners and a several paragraph article about her.

review: indigo girls, new opener keep audience ecstatic

by jim minge

world-herald staff writer

rose polenzani, a young singer-guitarist with elements of ani difranco and
fiona apple, was an exceptionally refreshing opening act thursday at the
civic auditorium music hall.

she threatened to steal the show away from headline act the indigo girls
before the duo even hit the stage. fortunately for the indigo girls, led by
emily saliers and amy ray, the audience had plenty of applause left.

although likely never heard by the 1,731 in attendance before thursday,
polenzani's powerful, yet light and airy vocals won the crowd over from the
get-go.

polenzani, a native of chicago, had a finicky acoustic-electric guitar that
snapped and crackled periodically during the her first two songs. a stage
hand brought her a new guitar. "whose is this?" she asked. "emily's? cool."

polenzani - who sang a song about teena brandon, a 22-year-old woman who
lived as a man and was beaten, raped and later murdered in 1993 on a farm
near humboldt, neb. - had a polaroid camera onstage with her. she stopped
briefly to take a picture of herself with saliers' guitar.

"i'll be selling this and copies of my cd in the lobby after the show," she
told the female-dominated crowd, as she launched into her song, "omen."

the indigo girls kept the ball rolling by opening with the rocking "go" and
"trouble," both from the duo's latest album, "come on now social."

backed most of the night by a four-piece band that included a cellist,
keyboardist, drummer and bassist, atlanta's saliers and ray drew the loudest
response when playing fan favorites, such as "least complicated," "the power
of two" and "chickenman."

the indigo girls brought polenzani back onstage to join them for a delicate
folk number.

"i'm playing amy's guitar now," polenzani said, drawing laughs.

the audience gave polenzani a standing ovation at the end of the tune. it
was nothing, however, to the reception given to the indigo girls' next song,
"closer to fine," which was on the duo's self-titled debut album in 1989.
nearly every member of the audience was on their feet singing along.

"thanks, y'all," saliers said after every song. "thank you for singing
along."

"faye tucker," also from "come on now social," was choice. a ramblin' rocker
in the vein of steve earle's "copperhead road," the song set the crowd on
its ear via ray's hard-edged vocals and saliers' slide guitar work.

"get out the map" and "shame on you" followed before the indigo girls
wrapped up the group's 90-minute set. saliers, ray and their band returned
for an encore.

"thanks, y'all," ray said. "we're going to do two songs - and then
'galileo,' " sending the audience into a massive cheer.

saw the girls last night here in omaha.  awesome show, as i knew it would
be.  ;-)

[...]

the omaha crowd was only 1730 or thereabouts, but it was a very knowlegable
crowd
and very vocal.  the girls stopped and let us sing a number of
times....probably three
or four full verses of various songs....least complicated, galileo, closer
to fine and
power of two, i think.  they seemed very impressed and happy to hear.

[...]

set list, in some order, some disorder:

go
trouble
andy
chickenman
sister
peace tonight
least complicated
power of two
ozilline
i don't wanna know
? - one of rose's songs with rose, of course
closer to fine
shed your skin
mystery
compromise
faye tucker
get out the map
shame on you

encore:
airplane
gone again
galileo

rose polenzani was just incredible.  she was very funny and really hung
in there when her guitar was acting up in the beginning.  she ended up
finishing up with emily's guitar, although she didn't like the strap on
it..hehe.
she was very funny and full of personality.  the reviewer for the paper
seemed
to enjoy her more than the girls.

amy seemed so happy and joyful....very intense and into the crowd.  she
really
seemed to dig the fact that such a small crowd was so into it.  when she
left
the stage after galileo, she pumped her fist, as if to say, "we killed 'em."
emily
made several very funny remarks.  shed your skin kicked ass, as did
chickenman,
go,  and compromise.  hey, i said i'm into amy right now..hehe.  emily's
singalongs
were fantastic, too.  least complicated, power of two and galileo, and of
course
closer to fine were crowd favorites.  faye tucker was absolutely amazing.
that song
just puts me in a trance....total joy.  ozilline and sister were the two
songs that surprised
me the most live...they were both excellent.

the band was excellent.  the cello player, caroline dale, kicked major
patooties on shed your skin
and faye tucker.  i love clare kenny's bass playing.  blair cunningham was
great....where have
i heard his name before?  and carole isaacs was wonderful.

i had so many moments of incredible highs....pure joy.  the only other
artist that does
that with the consistency of the indigo girls is sarah mclachlan.  i have to
say that right
now, the girls are my favorite.  watch out, sarah!

love and peace,
dan

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

i was at the show last night in mpls and was impressed.  the last time they
played northrup they were tired and the show lacked energy.  not the case
last night.  it rocked!

probably the most frustrating thing for me is how polite we all are here in
mn.  everybody stood up when they came on stage (to play go, which i had
guessed as soon as i saw sulli tuning em's electric) but everyone sat down
almost immediately.  ack.  people kept sitting down when i wanted to stand
- - ie. amy's songs.  :)

they skipped song off cons that i wanted to hear such as cold beer... and
gone again and seemed to be playing a ton off of sots and so.  it may have
been my imagination, though.  :)

they were both very into the crowd and commented on a sign that said
"minnesota: land of 10,000 dykes".  amy said something about it being on
the license plates and how lucky we are here in mn.  then came the comment
about fred phelps saying he was going to protest one of their concerts but
they think they gave him the wrong date.

they took about 2 or 3 questions from the audience.  one was the request
for virginia woolf and another was a question about the cover of cons.
they said that it was a photograph taken by amy's girlfriend and that they
didn't know who the girl was but that she seemed intense or confident or
something like that.  and that all girls should be like that...and boys
too.  amy then commented that the philosophy used to be share what you have
but now it's more hold on to your share.

overall it was a very fun show!
