there's one picture, but it's just one of the "ig's in a green cornfield"
promo shots.

indigo girls color music with heart

the arts of life: michelle henderson
   the indigo girls. courtesy photo

getting a handle on the indigo girls isn't too difficult. just pick up
a music magazine or type the group's name into an internet search
engine and you'll see reams of information on its' members social and
   political views.

it might be emily saliers touting the rights of the zapatistas,
mexico's mayan indians who are fighting to stay on their land against
the force of mexico's usa-backed government.

or it might be amy ray waxing about how her song "don't give that girl
a gun" is about a sad break-up with a lover. she didn't mind
discussing her lesbianism but was totally against revealing her
lover's name. it's the principle of the thing -- privacy and all.

the folk-pop duo has always worn its social activism on its sleeves.
since leaving the indie-circuit a decade ago and emerging into the
musical big leagues, they've continued airing their views, including,
among many, the rights of women, gays and indigenous people as well as
the need for environmental protection and gun control.

"we read a lot," ray said, explaining what motivates the group both
lyrically and in their choice of causes to support. "we talk to a lot
of activists that we really trust and who know what's going on in
   various circles.

"and we work on movements that are grassroots -- organized from
the bottom up and that are community-oriented. we like to join
movements where the people are politicized, the people have the power
rather than just some executive person at the top. and issues that
   have a far reaching impact."

obviously, it sounds noble, but most interesting to me as a listener
is the fact that their whole politicization rarely detracts from the
   music itself.

their amalgamation of heartfelt lyrics, broad musical styles and
haunting melodies have made them a hit on epic records.

"when i'm writing a song, i'm trying to write the best song that i can
write," ray said. "i'm trying to say what i want to say, but really,
i'm just interested in writing a good song. it's not, how do i make a
   good statement."

their latest release, come on now social, says it all for them. it's
their seventh release on epic, and the title is not one of the album's
   songs.

it's taken from a line in a song written by ray that seemed to capture
the spirit of the album, she said. it's an invitation, a call to act.

"the title is me, speaking to myself, wanting to be more of the world,
more activist and more with others," ray said.

and the album tackles everything from the group's rejection of capital
punishment in "faye tucker," a song about the 1998 execution of
texas's first female prisoner since the civil war, to "ozilline," a
tribute to ray's grandmother and others living with disabilities.

musically, the album is boss. they've collaborated with drummer john
reynolds and cellist caroline dale, both former sinead o'connor band
   members.

their celtic influences fit right in with the indigo girls' love of
appalachia-inspired tunes, and reynolds' hard-hitting rhythmic
   influences added a new element.

add to that guest appearances by musicians like sheryl crow and
   me'shell ndegeocello and it's rocking.

the indigo girls will appear at the indiana university auditorium
thursday night at 7:30 with the butchies as opening act.

"we always pick our opening acts and we pick them because we think
their music is amazing," ray said of the butchies. "it's three women,
and they're electric. they're out of a punk movement but they're very
melodic, so i sort of call them melodic punk. really good song writing
and good words. it's a good time to see them."

michelle henderson can be reached by phone at 331-4371, or by e-mail
   at mhenderson@heraldt.com.
