hi,'

i got an extra ig t-shirt at friday's tabernacle show.  it's the black one
that says "trouble came around here" on the front with the dates and cities
of all the shows on the back.  it's a large.   i paid $28 for it.  if anyone
wants it, i'll be glad to sell it for $20 plus $3.20 for shipping and
handling.   all interested parties, let me know via private email.

thanks, amanda

p.s.:  it's not been worn.

[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was

fun weekend so far!  :)  i wasn't gonna go to thursday's show.  just
friday's.  but i was in town and i drove by and saw a bunch of my buds
sitting out front, so i had to buy a ticket and go!  :)  glad i did.  it was
the loudest crowd i have ever heard!  i couldn't hear much after the concert
- - not cause of ig but cause of the crowd.  amy and emily said we were the
best hometown crowd they'd ever had.  :)

today, i paid my dues and sat in line for like 12 hours.  but i got front row
again and got to see it all without any tall people blocking my view.

stereo popsicle was the first opener and of course they rocked.  that band is
so cool.  emily, of course, sang back up on jenny.  then michelle malone, the
beautiful and talented queen of eddie's, took the stage wearing her black
leather pants with silver stars down the legs.  :)  and a red tight t-shirt.
her set was great and, of course, emily came out and played guitar and sang
back-up on strength for 2.  very beautiful.  a lot stronger than mm's album
version, in my opinion.

the during the ig set, mm played guitar and harmonica on songs such as
chickenman, i don't wanna know, and midnight train to georgia.

i didn't write the setlists down, but some highlights other than the new
stuff and the standards like ctf, galileo, po2, and least complicated were
ghost, virginia woolf, love's discovery, kid fears - that's all i can
remember that weren't the everyday show norms.

indigo girls carry on, after a year of loss and sadness

by steve dollar
cox news service

when emily saliers and amy ray -- the atlanta folk-pop duo known as the
indigo girls--play their last shows of 1999, it will be an occasion for
reflection and celebration.
it has been the best of times and the worst of them. they've weathered
the sudden deaths of close friends and family, but also made a breakthrough
concert trip to cuba, toured with the final installment of the lilith fair
and, in "come on now social" (epic), released one of the strongest albums in
their 19-year career.
"in terms of loss this year was the worst year ever," says saliers, whose
29-year-old sister, carrie, was found dead in her los angeles apartment in
march. the los angeles county coroner's office ruled that she died from
natural causes.
the new album is dedicated to carrie, and to others close to the
musicians, including the atlanta songwriter/performer known as benjamin, and
activists ingrid washinawatock el-issa and marcia gomez, members of the
indigenous women's network, with which the indigos are involved. "the message
of (my sister's) spirit was something i absorbed and lived by. there was so
much tragedy, but so much growth and inspiration," says saliers, 36.
"our culture fights death tooth and nail," she continues. "these were
reminders of being a natural part of the whole intricate web, and that's been
a good lesson for me, as many tears as i've shed. i am eternally optimistic."
ray, 35, concurs. "it was a hard year for us," she says, noting how the
death of a friend's grandmother inspired "go," the fired-up opening track on
"social," and the duo's plans to contribute a song to a tribute cd dedicated
to benjamin, who died in january at age 39.
if anything, the performers have responded to sad events by investing
their music with a sense of urgency. if it once was easy to typecast the
indigos as diary-dipping coffeehouse harmonizers, it is no more. "social"
shows a band that is musically complicated -- banjos coexist with theremins
and beat boxes -- and thrilled to be rocking out. "i really, really love
playing electric guitar," saliers says.
former atlanta vocalist kelly hogan says, "they're so nice you don't
think they could survive in the wilds, but they're rocking now. shocking and
rocking."
saliers and ray, whose non-musical interests include social activism,
running an independent record label (ray's daemon) and launching a restaurant
(saliers' watershed, in decatur), thrive on surprises. though they've been
affiliated with lilith fair, they also took their own generation xx show on
the road: the 1998 "suffragete sessions," which featured varied female
artists.
