okay, i called them and yes, they are still doing the over 21 thing. on
gasparilla day they serve 90 kegs of beer. so they really have no way to
monitor the drinking except for not letting people in.

(if there are any people on this list who make fake ids, now is your chance
to speak up. please?!)

do you think if enough people call and say "i'm under 21, and i already have
tickets so what do i do?"  that they might possibly reconsider?  cause this is
going to make me incredibly upset if i actually got tickets and can't even
go.... can all the people in tampa do us a huge favor and if it's not long
distance, maybe call a few times over the next week?  they ought to be able to
monitor drinking by wristbands or something....it's not really fair to the
people who worked hard for tickets and can't even go.

thanks so much,
sharon
and speaking of julie's fake id idea.....hehe =)

please, please please tell me that you're not trading commercially available
videos as bootleg copies!!!  the greatwoods concert and the ig appearances on
television shows are one thing (even if copyright issues on televised events
are often cloudy), but if you're copying uptown lounge and watershed for
trading, you're pirating material which should, by all rights, be purchased to
support ig's career.

now, of course, if you're trading away your original, store-bought copies of
these things, that's a different matter, entirely.

hi y'all!

well, we all know that ig is good for roadtrips, i was blasting cons this
morning, 5 am as i was driving through a horrible blizzard to get back to
college. set my head straight for a day full of exams. amazing!

and have you ever wondered how the driver's side windshield wipers
*always* wear out quicker than the passenger's side ones? it's not that
they get used more or anything?! that's annoying...:)

daemon records announce - http://www.daemonrecords.com

hey everyone -

a few updates on the site we thought you might want to know about.

***daemon radio now on cd***
because of the overwhelming response to the daemon radio survey, we've
decided to make daemon radio broadcasts available on cd.    you can get
the  first broadcast in it's entirety for $6.00.  just check under "what's
new" on the daemon order form or click "buy it" on the radio page.

***monthly special. ***
we know it's late but a new monthly special is finally up.  this month
grab up a copy of rose polenzani's anybody for just $10.00 plus a free
tour poster.

***10 years of daemon***
we're working on the 10 year anniversary tour.  we should have about 5 to
6 dates in the southeast each with different artists - some new/some old.
we're shooting for may.  good time for a road trip!

we've have a new tour date page:
http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/live/
it has a cool picture of rose that a fan sent in.

znet page has a cool article on the zapatista's :
http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/cool/cool.html

i'm really into public radio and kcrw.org has to have some of the finest
stuff out there, www.whyy.org has some pretty intelligent discussion and all
the cool npr shows i can't get in maine 8^( there is a liter ton of stuff -
listening to bbc radio 1 with john peel was a blast at work a few weeks a
ago - check out "mit's list of radio stations on the internet" (i cant
remember the url off the top of my head - type the text within the quotes to
find in a search engine - not glamourous - but really comprehensive.

hi all....
my friend and i were having a small discussion on some indigo girls stuff
and i was wondering if someone out there could help me with some of this.
first off, from 1200 curfews before "land of caanan" amy says, "this song
used to be a ballad, but then i heard the replacements, and it wasn't
anymore."  can someone please enlighten me as to why she says this?
also, i noticed that in a few of emily's songs -- galileo, watershed,
power of two, etc. -- she makes mention to some sort of crash, whether it be
a plane crash or a car crash.  does she have some sort of fear of crashes?
is there any reason behind all of her references or is it merely just a
coincidence?  plus, after "airplane" i sort of have a feeling that she does
have some sort of fear but i just wasn't sure on this.
i was just curious about these things and i appoligize if they have been
discussed before.

peace to all --

okay. as y'all probably know by now, emily's piano was bid on by
somebody else, and although those of us that choose to are still donating
to hte (the original point of the collection) there will be no piano for
us at the end of it. all well and good, except that some of us had gotten
kinda attached to the idea of giving it to an atlanta orphanage that the
stellar joanne had tracked down. so we decided okay, let's buy a cheaper
because it's not autographed but still fully functional piano and give
it
to them!
as of this moment (9 minutes to midnight est) i have emails from
7 people offering a total of $120 in pledges. while this is very
heartening, $120 does not a piano buy. so i wanted to toss this out to
mainlist and say that if youare interested in donating a couple of bucks
to buy a piano for an orphanage in need, please drop me a line offlist and
i will put you down. in two days or so i;m going to take another look at
the numbers and see if it's feasible; if at that point it is, i'm going to
post another request for donations as well as a call for an atlanta-local
who'swilling to take on some of the nitty gritty of this for me since i'm
up in pa.
        so yeah. let me know.
        thanks -

hello all!
we live about 70 miles east of st. louis, mo., and ig gets little to no
airplay on the radio around here...even the station that sponsored their
concert in st. louis in december rarely plays their stuff, which is a pity.

but, my husband and i drove down to carbondale, il, on friday night (which
is where i went to college at southern illinois university at carbondale)
and since the tape player in our truck is not cooperating these days, we
were flipping around the stations and came across some promising music and
during the course of our travels heard not one but two ig songs! (shame on
you and i don't wanna talk about it) so i was a happy camper...this was a
comfort since the stations in carbondale when i went to school there from
88 to 93 generally left a lot to be desired.

and as long as i could get the station during the hour drive home, they
were playing an excellent show of women musicians which included some
wonderful old bonnie rait among others.

i thought the original point was that since we thought no one would be bidding on
the piano and hte would get no money, that the list would bid on it so that hte
would get some money....and since we didn't know what to do with the piano, we
would give it to a charity....

hi everyone :)

one of my favorite places on the web for music is mlive's website - they are
the ones who host acoustic cafe. if you go to the acoustic cafe section on
their site, they have tons of old performances up there, including the girls,
cry cry cry, ani, the nields, jonatha brooke, patty larkin..plus a very rare
tori song (it's under one of their compilation acoustic cafes and the song
was an improv that tori made up on the spot called abbey road) here's the
link: http://www.mlive.com/cafe/index.ssf?/cafe/stories/19981109200.frm

also, someone else mentioned the river and they rock! that radio station is
one of the only things i miss about the east coast. their site is
from: "l-soft list server at netspace.org (1.8d)" <listserv@netspace.org>
subject:      file: "indigo-girls log0001c"
to: underdog@earthlink.net
date: sat, 5 feb 2000 15:52:49 -0500

www.wxrv.com.  they also have a really cool compilation called live at the
river music hall that has live performances by tori, ani (this is the best
version of in or out i have ever heard), jonatha brooke, and a funny
barenaked ladies doing if i had a million dollars. all proceeds go to rainn
and it is definitely worth the $15.

ig content: i have seen a couple posts about the london video from 95.. i
have it on video if anyone needs it. it is from my master so the quality is
excellent and it is about 45 minutes if anyone wants a copy you can e-mail me
and maybe we can set up a trade.

as a side note...i just got (well ok i have had it for a while but i just
finally watched it :) the ig performance on letterman in 89 (from kelli kay
who rocks!) and it is absolutely hysterical. a friend (hi jen!) and i were
watching it and we were laughing so hard :) em's hair is really big in the
80's style and she has tons of makeup on..plus dave has no idea who they are
so it's really funny...and amy is so damn cute showing off her new tattoo
(the one on the arm :) lol.

also, if anyone hasn't picked up their copy of the rolling stone with melissa
(if it's not tooo late) you should go get it. it is a really really good
article and melissa is sooooo sweet. there is also a really cute pic of her
and julie with david crosby and his wife. about half of the article, plus
some extra pics are up on rolling stone's site. melissa is on 60 minutes ii
tomorrow night and larry king live (w/ david crosby) on thursday night.

hey this is interesting...illegally copied by me from aol.

<<gays in military ads to be aired

washington (ap) - hoping to influence public opinion and the presidential
debate, a gay rights group is airing a new television ad that goes after
republicans who would keep them out of the armed forces. the ad, being
unveiled today in new hampshire and iowa, responds to a campaign by the
republican national committee spotlighting the controversy surrounding vice
president al gore's position on gays in the military. ''the republican
presidential candidates are so busy fighting about who can and cannot serve
in the military, they may have forgotten the values we actually fight for,''
says the 30-second ad produced by the human rights campaign, a
washington-based gay advocacy group.>>

there is a bigger story on aol as well.

actually.. since i made the original post.. there were 3 points.

1) honor the earth gets a donation,

2) a school/charity/needy group gets a great piano

and 3) warm fuzzies for everyone.

that was my original post.

i am still doing a fundraiser for hte. as of right now, we have
approximately 70 people still donating. if you're interested in giving to

you guys are really doing a great thing.  i admire all of you for doing such a
selfless thing, but did anyone actually check with the orphanage to see if a
piano is really needed? perhaps if you going to all this effort of soliciting
and organizing donations, then it might be worthwhile to give them something
that they really need right now.  but maybe you did already check.  it would
seem to me that perhaps clothing or food or cash or books or something else
would be on top of the priority list.  just a thought.  if someone wants to
forward this to that piano list, please do so - i don't know that address.

elaine, you must have been reading my mind!  i read a story today
on www.boston.com about how school libraries are filled, some almost
exclusively, with way out of date books.  i would imagine that the
story would the same if not worse for orphanages and such.  you
can buy a lot of good, current books for not a lot of money sometimes
and it would be easier to raise "useful" money for that than a piano.

i'm sure that the piano people will comment on this, but i wanted to drop a
quick note and let y'all know that the orphanage has already been contacted and
would appreciate the piano.  this was taken into consideration long before it
was decided upon by the piano auction money raising folks.

you both have valid points, but you must also realize that these schools with
outdated/limited books most likely also have limited funds for music
programs.  being that we are the indigo girls list, making a donation of a
piano seems quite appropriate, and i am sure it is needed pretty much
anywhere. just my .02........
have a great day!   =)

ok.. i replied privately a few times. now, publicly, to put an end to this.
however, i'll defend why the group (myself not included, since i'm doing the
hte fundraiser, which was the main point of ig's auction) wants to buy a
piano. i was referred to the carrie steele-pitts home by an atlanta radio
stations promotions organizer after i called around trying to find music
programs in need of a piano. i spoke to the woman who runs the home.  she
confirmed their need. i posted to the list that i created for the piano
drive, and many members still want to try to purchase a piano for this
group. why? because.. the group started out to try to purchase and donate a
piano. many still want to do that, and i applaude them.

because most of the discussion occured offlist, the main list would not have
seen the developments. however, i believe that unless you are going to email
mandy, pledge your money and get involved, you really should not criticize
what they are trying to do. this isn't meant as a flame at all, but in
support of that group.

joanne - who promises she will shut up now.. since her boyfriend (yes, i
have a man, folks) outbid all the girls for the right to hold her hand. : ).
thanks for that, gang. never did i ever expect to see a bidding war over me.

speaking only for myself, i can say that that is exactly why we
decided to continue the piano drive. although raising money for hte was
the initial premise, many of us got attached to the idea of giving a piano
to the needy and deserving carrie steele house. i for one would have been
just fine letting go of the piano idea if carrie steele house hadn't been
so appealing a recipient.
so as it stands now we're still making a go of buying a piano to
give to them. we're clocking in at $175 now. if everybody who's kind of
waffling on this pitches in a few dollars, we can make it happen. and even
if amy and emily never hear about this at all, we would still be doing a
really great thing - i.e. giving a piano to a houseful of orphans who
currently don't have one. so if you're in for it, drop me a line.
oh, and to those folks who have already pledged: i'm going to be
sending out something either tonight or tomorrow morning, so you will hear
from me eventually. :)

i'm sorry that you feel you have to "defend" yourself because it was
never my intent to put you or anyone else on this drive on the defensive.
the point was made (i think by mandy) that about $170 had been raised
and that wouldnt be enough to buy a piano.  my post was simply another
idea if any were being entertained.  i'm not being critical of the
piano.

and to the post (forget who, sorry) who said that underfunded libraries
are likely accompanied by underfunded arts prgrams, that is likely
true.  it is also not my intent to force a discussion on which is
"better".  that's not the point.  my post was intended to present
some other ideas, not realizing how much research had gone into the
original goal.

never once did i say that a piano shouldnt be bought.  please do not
infer something that was not there.  i was not being critical but
offering ideas. and telling any of us that we cannot contribute
thoughts without making a pledge goes against the spirit of sharing
ideas.

hmmm, is listserv down?  i've been sending it commands
for the last hour and it hasn't confirmed any of them
yet.  well, if this has been mentioned before, it's
not my fault, i was off for the weekend and was trying
to search the archives, but like i said, i haven't
gotten any response.

i got this in my inbox:
indigo girls
friday, february 12th 8pm
james madison university
harrisonburg, va 22807

along with a person asking me to post it on my
website.  (oooh a little rush of power just went
through my veins :)  anyway, i thought i'd mention it
here as well.  the person who sent it to me said it
was confirmed, but his message was dated monday,
january 18, 1999.  so i don't know if he's not y2k
compliant or if year old email is arriving just now.
he also did not provide a number to call for info.  so
if anyone knows more about a jmu show...

are you just talking about orphanage donations?  if not, then how about
doing a clothing drive or something for a woman's shelter or a homeless
shelter?  i'd gladly contribute clothing to that, too.  i have lots of
clothing that i have outgrown and that my kids have outgrown - i could
easily contribute this way, as i have lots of unused stuff in storage,
but i am short on cash flow right now (the story of my life) so a
monetary donation to anyone right now is out of the question.

i agree with this.  if everyone is just dying for the list to get together and
donate to charity, maybe we should try clothes for a shelter or old toys for
kids in need.  money is always good, but i think some most of the people on the
list already donated to hte and probably can't give to lots of other causes
too.  even though it would cost to send the donations...
and just another suggestion.....if some people are still stuck on donating a
piano to an orphanage, but not enough money is collected (i don't know how much
has been so far, but in case people donated to hte and can't to that) then
maybe buy some other things to benefit their music program that costs less than
a piano...music, recorders (a good instrument for little kids to play) and
other stuff.  or donate the money to them and tell them to use it for their
music program how they see fit.  the piano would be nice, but only if enough
money is collected.

just a point i thought neglected - for those of you who are still wondering
why this orphanage needs a piano, it is because they give music lessons to
these troubled kids (orphan has a different definition now - abused, runaway,
etc) and don't have a piano to give them on.  joanne said in her offlist post
that the woman had "that ozilline voice" and it is the oldest orphanage in
atlanta i believe.   perhaps a more inspiring reason to give.

here's the scoop for feb 12 in harrisonburg, va:  tickets go on sale at the
warren hall box office thursday night at 9pm-11pm.  if you can't get a hold
of them then, bo hours are m-f 8:30-4:30.  there are 3500 seats in the
theater, and they don't expect it to sell out.  all the seats are assigned,
there are no ga seats.  they expect the floor seats to go fast, though.
students are charged $15, others are charged $20. you can call with a credit
card if you can't be there: 540-568-7960.  or you can go to their local
record stores to get them: town and campus records, plan 9 records, and
rocktown music.

woo!!!
another chicago date.
how did the indigo girls know that my birthday is february 29th?  you know,
since they made those concert dates the weekend before my rarely-occurring
b-day...it must be because of me...right?  yeah, anyway.
i actually would like to go to both shows, so i'm still working on that.

clergy endorse sexual declaration

clergy endorse sexual declaration
by richard n. ostling=
ap religion writer=
new york (ap) _ dramatizing the most divisive issue in american
religion, 850 mostly liberal members of the clergy and other
religious figures issued a declaration tuesday urging all faiths to
bless same-sex couples and allow openly gay ministers.
among endorsers of the statement were the retired leader of the
episcopal church, the presidents of the united church of christ and
unitarian universalist association, presidents or deans at 15
protestant seminaries, and numerous theology teachers.
the declaration got slim backing among roman catholics and none
from any major evangelical, black protestant, eastern orthodox,
mormon, buddhist, hindu or muslim organizations.
besides homosexuality, the paper advocates open access to
abortion and sex education at all age levels. it opposes
''unsustainable population growth,'' the ''commercial exploitation
of sexuality'' and all forms of ''sexual oppression.''
''for too long the only voices in the public square on religion
and sexuality have been the anti-sexuality pronouncements of the
religious right,'' said debra haffner, president of the sexuality
information and education council of the u.s., a secular
organization.
a spokesman for the southern baptist convention, the rev.
william merrell, said the declaration perpetuates a ''radical
departure from the teachings of the scriptures.''
''i do not believe that the moral confusion and the moral
incoherence that characterizes the time is relieved by such
statements. rather it is made worse,'' merrell said.
added an episcopal church conservative, president peter c.
moore
of trinity episcopal school for ministry in ambridge, pa.: ''god
loves homosexuals, as he loves us all. but i have yet to find any
support based on scripture, tradition or reason for the idea that
god approves of homosexual behavior.''
members of 25 denominations signed the declaration, but nearly
half were from four groups with liberal policies: the united
church, unitarian universalists and judaism's reform and
reconstructionist branches.
the slim catholic support came from two nuns and a few lay
activists.
nine bishops and a dozen seminary professors gave endorsements
from the episcopal church, which will vote on same-sex rituals at a
convention in july.
there was weaker official support from officials of the united
methodist church and presbyterian church (u.s.a.). in may,
methodists will debate ordination of gay ministers and same-sex
marriages; presbyterians will debate same-sex marriage in june.

here is a recent interview of emily and amy done by someone who has asked to
remain anonymous.  (i know you all are dying now, right?:)  it is from the
university of louisville show...
:)
trooper
p.s.  any have tabs for emily's "play it again sam?"

this is a transcript from a recent indigo girls interview.

i:  i saw your show in st. louis and you seem to be very happy on stage, is
there something special that keeps you guys fresh?

e:  new songs and a new band, its going really well, they are good people,
they are fun to be around, they have great senses of humor, and good hearts.
they are really great musicians, very professional, if we ask them to learn a
song they learn them quickly and they play them and sing them well…blair is a
very spirited drummer and that makes a big difference.  the new songs, its
great to have a new record out, that keeps us fresh, and we make a new set
list every night so, we're having fun.

i:  i like the new album a lot, and i like the whole "hidden track thing"
(laughter all around), it leaves a little surprise, its like a little
christmas present.

e:  yeah, exactly

a: yeah, that was cool.

i: i noticed at another show that you guys played new songs like, you started
out with "go" played trouble, and the crowd was just sitting and enjoying the
show, and then you played "land of canaan" and then people got up, do you
notice that a lot, that it takes older songs to really get the crowd going?

a:  sometimes the crowd is up from the first song, like "go" especially
because its up, but the older stuff definitely is so popular, that's always
how it is hopefully you get to a place where its not always the old old
stuff, you know, that it moves up each year, but it does, people request
stuff that's not as old sometimes.

i: i noticed that more on this tour than on the last tour, people were into
"shame on you" and "get out the map," but it was the older songs that they
really sang all the words to, but i noticed on this tour, they are singing
the new songs, from the new album.

a:  yeah, we noticed that, its really cool.  when we first went out, in
august, before the record was out, it didn't take long to we people singing
along it was a good feeling b/c we're really nervous when we put a new record
out, about how its going to be received, i mean we like it but, you never
know.

i: you had a lot of songs to weed through right?  like "winthrop", and
"chiapas bound", how do you weed through what is going to be on the album and
which doesn't?

e:  well, in the case of "winthrop," "leeds" ended up on the album  (the last
album).  leeds was lyrically a stronger song, when ulali came into the
studio, what they did to the song was just magic.  its just a stronger song
in general and personally, more meaningful me.  as time goes by, you sorta
leave songs behind, its easy to do that and its hard to go back and say oh,
its hard for me, i can't imagine wanting to pick that song up again.
i: so, you wouldn't want to put that song on an album?

e: anything is possible, but it's not my inclination.

a:  if we were putting together a record where we remembered something that
might fit in really well, we would probably go back to it.  for me, i have so
many songs that i don't feel a place for or didn't on this record.  songs
that are really personal and i wrote it to write it, and not ever necessarily
or i'm not ready to put it on anything and i don't really know if it's a good
song or not b/c i'm too close to it personally.  so, that happens a lot.

e:  we just discuss which songs are stronger or work well together and we
have left over ones…with philosophy of loss, i didn't want to let that song
go but it didn't fit into the whole.  each of the12 songs, was so strong and
each song is so dense as it is, and you listen to the whole record and you
have space at the end and you get a little treat like you said, better to
have done that than to stick it somewhere in that mix and imbalance it in
someway.  so we made that choice.

i: how do you choose the sequence of your songs on an album?

a:  we right the names of each song on little slips of paper and move them
around.

e: we listen to the beginnings of songs and the ends of songs.

a:  its based on the key the song's in, the instrumentation, not wanting it
to be too jarring but not wanting it to sound alike from one song to the
next.  we have lots of little qualifications that we have to fulfill.  there
are probably just one or two orders that will actually work with all of the
requirements we have.  so, once we have figured that out, it works.  this
order was pretty easy i guess.

e: you can't do it until the very last part of mastering it.  it's the very
final process.

i: how do you pick which old songs you're going to play at night?

e: it depends on how we feel, and how the set is going, and what works with
the other songs.  we get tired of songs, amy gets tired of a song faster than
i do.  we try to change it up a lot, and not play the same songs over and
over.

a:  who's opening for us too, when we have michelle (malone) around, there
are certain songs we'll play with her and that will dictate sometimes some of
the older stuff we'll pull out, that she might play along with.  or, we'll
leave blank spaces in the set list and just feel the audience out and if
there are requests and we know them and we feel like playing them, we'll just
do that.  there is so much old stuff that has fallen out of favor, but it
comes back in for the weirdest reasons, and we'll just wake up one day and
say "man, i feel like playing 'jonas and ezekial' today."  i haven't even
wanted to play that for 6 months, and the other day we played it.  no reason
behind it.

i:  what made you stop playing "closer to fine" as your closing song?

e: just a change, you know we've been doing that for so, so, so long.  we
used to start the set with "galileo" and now we've been ending with it.  we
just like to change things up.

a: it kinda reclaims it, a little bit, it used to be a song where all the
guests would come out and sing it, and i would play mandolin on it and we
just wanted to go back to the way we played it originally, just two guitars
and two voices.

e: now its more of a song in the set, rather than this thing at the end that
we do.

a: but "galileo" has taken a strong place, it's the most requested song, no
one requested "closer to fine" as much, probably because they knew we were
going to play it.  but it is like all night long, every night "galileo,
please play galileo."  we have to announce that at the end of the night that
we're going to play it now.  but it's a great song, we don't get tired of
playing that song.

e: it's weird.

c: what songs do you get tired of?

a: i can't play "land of canaan" every night.  there are some songs that take
a lot of energy, and you don't want to do it with less than what you have, so
you just play it, and rotate them, and some songs just sound so bad if you
don't use all of your energy.  and that's one of them, we only play it when
we're not tired of it so you don't have to worry we're being insincere.

e:  i just get generally tired of playing my songs, in general, except for a
few that i rarely get tired of playing.  i never get tired of playing amy's
songs, never.

a: do you mean the "i'm sick of myself syndrome?"

e: yeah, exactly.

a: we get that.

e:  it doesn't take me long to experience that after the release of a record.
that's why we take breaks.

i: you guys have been touring and going strong for a while?

a:  we had 8 days off at thanksgiving, but a month before that we were on the
road, and then we had 4 days off.  and then 3 weeks before that, and lilith,
and we had to switch drummers in between then, so we had more rehearsals, and
pretty much since february when we recorded or record in england, we've been
working.  its gotten away from us, time just flew.

e: we always do that though, take several months to do a record, tour for a
year, a year and a half.

i: how do you think you have grown as songwriters?

e: i don't know really because for me, i feel like some of my best songs are
really old songs, there's a couple that are as good as anything i've written,
and maybe as good as anything i'll ever write.  other new songs feel strong,
and others don't.  so, i don't really know how to gauge it, i feel like i've
grown, but i don't know how really.  if anything, i'm a little less
melodramatic, emotionally in the way i express emotions in love songs.  early
on, i would just make myself sick when i wrote love songs.  it's the way i
express myself.  its funny because "prince of darkness" we've been playing
that recently some and i really like the movement but some of the lyrics,
(she cringes) ick, god…its funny that i am still interested in playing a song
when i really don't like some of the lyrics, they're embarrassing.  but the
passion behind the song sounds really good to me still.

i: what songs of all of your songs are you most proud of?

a: i'm proud of "go," "kid fears" those two i'm really proud of because they
were difficult to write and they are similar songs actually but i stuck with
them and they expressed exactly what i was trying to say.  i had a vibe in
the chorus that i was looking for.  this new record, my songwriting i am
finally where i want to be, i've figure out how i want to write, its taken me
a long time to figure it out, i'm a really late bloomer, i really knew i
wasn't really there yet, i was very conscious of not being where i wanted to
be.

i: would you say that has been a battle for you?

a: a big battle, and i had to work on it a lot, but now, for better or worse,
i am where i want to be and i can figure out when i am writing a song, how to
make it better consciously, for me, its not like any other songwriter.  the
more recent stuff for me, i'm more interested in it, i can see my mistakes on
the last few records, and i can see where i mis-stepped.  even when we were
in the midst of recording those songs i could feel something not quite being
right.  so, its funny how that works.

i: does that make you regret at all?

a: no, because you can't do anything about it and its sentimental, and there
are sentimental attachments to songs even though they aren't good and i've
always been a late bloomer about everything creative in my life.  i don't
know, i'm lazy maybe.

e: hardly, hardly lazy.

i:  besides cons, i'm sure that is a baby for you right now, i can tell
really, i can tell, as it well should be.

a&e: (laughter)

i: besides that album what album is your favorite?

e:  besides that, "rites of passage" is mine.  definitely.

a:  i don't know, there's a couple of really strong songs on each of them,
and a few really weak ones for me personally, i wish i could put them all
together into one. i think rop was a good point for us of development, it
marked something for us.  1200 curfews i like a lot, it was fun to put
together, it captured something, we didn't do any overdubs its all really
live, it just has a really good vibe.

i:  would you ever do anything like that again?

e: yeah.  i personally don't like live records.

a: i do of course.

i: but you are so incredible live.

e: yeah, but it never translates to me, not quite.  i think 1200 curfews is a
really good record for a live record, i like that, i don't like get back…er
"back on the bus y'all"

a: no.

e: but we're into the spirit of live music, so we would probably do it again,
but for my listening, its just a personal thing.

i:  how do you feel about people taking your music as a message.  and
becoming role models, that has to be very flattering, but do you worry about
people taking it the wrong way?

e:  i think just on a purely analytical level, if people get different things
out of a piece of work its better, like a poem, different interpretations.
so, i think that's a good thing, i don't think any of our messages could be
misconstrued to the point where we are spreading, except to people who are
homophobic, spreading evil messages or things that are going to harm anyone
or that are negative in nature, i think people who study our music know that
its positive in nature, and its from pure motivation and intent.  i don't
worry about that and i think its very flattering to have someone take your
words or message and look up to it or live by it in some way or if it eases
any pain or trouble.  i know that music has done that for me and it continues
to.  music is a motivator in my life.

i:  you were talking about homophobia, you had those school cancellations in
south carolina, would you ever think about doing something like that again?

e: we're already planning some more.

a: we're gonna do it again, we haven't really gotten it together, we haven't
figured out how to work it.  everything is so expensive and we pay for it
ourselves, we're gonna do it, we're gonna keep trying.  after that happened,
all these schools called us and said, "we would have you here."  it's a few
parents who make trouble that are scared, and i don't know what they are
scared of but they're scared.

i: i think its really important that you guys keep doing it, it sends a
message to a lot of kids, because a lot of people would shy away from that
and say hey "we were gonna play a free show here, your loss."  i think its
gonna show a lot of kids that the struggle is worth something.

a:  we play off their response, in that case the response was so
overwhelmingly in the support of us in the cities where it was canceled.  it
was so easy to organize an all ages show that night.  if there hadn't been a
big response, we probably wouldn't have done that, we might have shied away.
you need that mutual energy of knowing that its something that they are
interested in, its their activism.    they created a whole thing around it.
that gives us the energy to try it again, and know that there are a lot of
really active high school students, and its really promising.

i: its amazing, it makes me feel like i was a slacker.

a: me too.

e: its never too late.

i: you have worked with a lot of artists, people opening for you, lilith
fair, sst,  what have you learned from these musicians, who are your
favorites, and how do they inspire you?

a:  they totally inspire us, you learn everything.  from technical stuff,
what guitar pedals to use, different sounds, lighting rigs, everything, all
of the backstage stuff, and then you learn musically, performance stuff.

e: you get inspired by other people's talent.

a: its just, you have to be really open minded, because lilith especially is
so different from our world.  when we first started that, the musicians who
were on it, the level of their success, and their approach to the business.
we had to learn, or i did, how to stand back and be more open and not judge
people harshly.  suffraggettes, was a whole other world, it was 12 women on a
bus together, it was great.  one musician on that tour stood out for me,
thalia zedek from the band come.  who i had always wanted to work with, i
thought she'd never want to do something like that, but she was totally cool
and she was like "yeah sure!" and it just shows you, you never know, you
can't think that because someone is from a completely other world  that they
don't want to work with you.  that was really neat, and she turned out to be,
an amazing performer.  a real ring leader, confidence builder, really
supportive.

e: loved by all

a: loved by all

i: i saw that show in cincinatti, and you guys looked like you were having so
much fun!

a: it was like a high school pageant. we'll do it again and we learned a lot
from it, because sometimes it wasn't the highest level of musical
accomplishment, but it was better for other reasons.

maybe this is a little off the subject, but have any of you heard of
wow2000? it's a national convention for people concerned about social
justice in the church, and it's going to take place this summer in
chicago--its focus is on the acceptance/celebration of the lgbt population
within the church and in society in general.

i'm involved with the planning committees and our first big meetings are
coming up next weekend. before i traveled all the way out there, i wanted to
know if you had any suggestions i could bring to them. we're basically
trying to figure out who should speak, who we should contact as far as
publicity goes, what kind of fun activities to plan, etc. i'm probably going
to be on the arts and entertainment committee, so suggestions in this area
would be especially helpful. :)

i realize this is kinda vague--i'm just sorta looking for lgbt people who
can tell me a little about how they feel about the church or topics they'd
want discussed at a convention like this.

thanks--i really appreciate this list for its members' willingness to help
out. please reply privately, of course. :)

thanks in advance!

shannon

gillian welch rules.  if you like dark, folkie,
appalachian type music, as well as beautiful ballads,
be sure and check her out.  her and partner dave
rawlings' harmonies stir the soul.

hmm...looks like i got scouped on this news flash.  we've been having campus
wide computer problems, so getting to my email has been iffy this week.

here's what i know about the convo center:

* seating 7,612 for full size - from what i understand, they'll set up and one
end and have the seating in a horse shoe type thing.

* seating chart url <http://www.jmu.edu/athletics/miscellan/c-seat1.gif>

* directions url <http://www.jmu.edu/athletics/miscellan/facility/convo.htm>

that's all i know right now.  i've never been to a concert in the convo, so i
don't know much about the acoustics or visual stuff.

hey..

just got a tip from another mailing list--

ala (the american library association) has two posters that ani difranco and
melissa etheridge did to promote reading.  you can find them here:

http://alastore.ala.org/sitesolution.taf?_userreference=532c85bccacb93a2388602
de&_sn=catalog&_pn=product_list&_op=44

another way to go is to go to alastore.ala.org, then go to the graphics page,
the posters page, then celebrity posters.

personally, i know what i'll be decorating my office with. :-)

just wanted to respond to the question about whether greg brown and gillian
welch were worth seeing. the question's been answered about gillian, but i
gotta put in a plug for greg! he is a really gifted performer. i don't
listen to his cds all that much (to be honest), but i go see him whenever i
can. he grabs the audience and really entertains - fun, dry and wry sense
of humor, really quick wit and sharp, yet warm and down-home. he tells lots
of wonderful, evocative stories. i mean _go see greg brown_ ! do not miss
it! you'll laugh and have a great time. and he's a really good guitar
player. he does all this guitar stuff while he's telling a story and i'm
wondering how?

that's my plug for the day.

too bad this is probably the most conservative, evangelical episcopal
seminary in the us...and happens to be where most of the priests from my
parents' (and my former) parish were trained. :p  i'm glad to see that the
seeming majority of the rest of the episcopal clergy are being supportive,
however...i'd really like to be married in my church one day. :)

hey all,

some sort of safety net. i don't want them to be among the millions who are

b) will cover domestic partners and

c) is somewhat affordable.

i'm sorry for asking the list but ya know, i've been talking to agents and
tried searching on the website and figured perhaps someone here would know
of some way i can get my employees some insurance (i am talking about 1

maybe this is an inadequecy of many, but emily seems to be using the image
well...

hey yall

i've somehow ended up with extra copies of 2 boots.  i'd give them to whoever
wants them for just the cost of a blank tape and postage.

indigo girls live on the mountain stage:
get out the map, don't give that girl a gun, power of two, everything in its
own time, hey kind friend, galileo, chickenman, let the good times roll

ig at merriweather post pavillion:
chickenman, galileo, shame on you, ghost, shed your skin, get out the map,
the weight, water is wide, closer to fine, what's going on.

i also have these promo tapes:

christina aguilera

billy crawford

the first person to e mail me back gets the tape (s), i really can't make
copies right now, these are just extra copies i have.

agreed.  also however,  i  read  somewhere
emily doesn't like flying,  didn't she say it somewhere that she's
afraid to fly, at least that's
the impression i have after listening to  "airplane"  repeatedly .  i
played that song last

there's more to be said for staying on the ground while  in flight, i'd

i was checking out the house of blues web site last night and there is
another show set for feb. 25, so the after 5 thing for ig would make sense.
i also saw that they do ticket giveaways for each show and you can register
as a hob member at the site to be eligible. i'm not sure if it would apply
to a general admission situation like this, but if so it said the contest
is held for a 24-hour period 14 days before the concert date...just
something that might be worth a try!

i'll be making my first trek to atlanta and staying a week. i've been wanting to go for like 5 years and now i've got the vacation time and the dough to do it!
anywhoooo, if any locals out there would email me privately with "hot spots", cool places to visit, etc., maybe ig related, maybe not but cool anyway, or just some cool local bands playing that you think would be worth seeing, please let me know :)
and i'm not opposed to meeting folks over a cup of coffee and a good chat session at a local coffee shop/bookstore whatever....if anyone's up to it.
i'll be there in february sometime after the 15th and leaving around the 23rd or 24th..give or take a day or two depending on my mood and the depletion of my funds :)
also, if anyone knows of a not too expensive hotel/motel that isn't too skeezy looking or in a dangerous neighborhood or not too far from atlanta, let me know :) otherwise i'll be motel 6'n it :)
thanks in advance!
