trying to get a line of conversation going......
what  do you think is the absolute best song
ig have  done to date,  and  musically speaking
what makes it  deserving of high marks

i  think  fugitive is  one of their  best, it's been
underrated,  and deserves more airplay.   out
of all the songs  i've heard on so  the  only
song  i hear from off so  it seems is least complicated., that's okay
but it gets rather  old
really fast to hear the same thing over and over.....

fugitive is  highly personal to me  as it  opened my eyes to  things
going on  in me i never knew i had,  amy talks about emily being better
at
self expression and being the more verbal one,
but  amy  can really  get your brains going too.

i was  recovering from a fall six years ago,, and
i sat outside in the yard,  and visualising  all
the images  that  she used  to describe  her
relationship w cooper seay at the time.  i   didn't  know enough to
recognise  she was talking  about being a lesbian.amongst other things.
it got  me started  searching.

i will always thank amy for that.

peace

oh yes,  i burned a finger on the stove,  so
typing this evening  is limited to one hand, hence there is very few
capitalising.  ouch
gotta go.

hey all...

for any interested parties: barbara kessler's new cd is out! yay!! for anyone
who doesn't know who barbara is (and hasn't taken me up on my sampler offer)
- barbara is really cool :) folky and mellow and funny. to hear soundclips of
her new stuff and previous releases, go to www.cdfreedom.com. anyone who
wants to talk about all things bk, please join my discussion list at

more music: my indigo friend jen and i went to berkeley to see jess klein and
richard shindell on sunday. i have never hear jess klein before, but she was
terrific. she is part of the voices on the verge series (along with rose
polenzani, beth amsel, and erin mckeown). richard shindell was soooo good and
soooo funny :) i recommend them both :)

for the igc, did i mention miss jen won the name that solo contest?? teehee
:) she rocks!

hey there!!!  i would love to see  ig on politicallyincorrect anytime,
amy could definately hold her ground,  but both of them would be
unbeatable.

on the other hand i regrett that tom snyder is
gone because he would take  a  much more in depth  approach to the
subjects bill maher puts on his show,  amy and emily would be able to
get out  a lot  more informatio on te things  that
really need exposure.

now thats interesting, my sister keeps saying that ig is too country, even
when i put stuff like shame on you or closer to fine on, ive tried over
and over, but no luck, for her even melissa etheridge is 'too
country'...., go figure.
i love the  images in emilys songs that just pop up and hit you
unexpectedly. i think fare thee well, and land of canaan are super songs.
just lately ive become obsessed with welcome me - there's something about
that one...
i dont think its possible to name 'the one and only best song', there are
so many exellent ig songs.

hkf's,
let's all try to pick out the vligc:

philips arena
atlanta, georgia, march 20, 2000

first set:
carry on
southern man
stand and be counted
pre-road downs
heartland
49 bye-byes
slowpoke
marrakesh express
faith in me
almost cut my hair
cinnamon girl

second set:
helplessly hoping
our house
old man
dream for him
someday soon
looking forward
after the goldrush
guinnevere
out of control
seen enough
teach your children

[7th inning stretch]
woodstock
long time gone
ohio
for what it's worth
down by the river
love the one you're with
rockin' in the free world
encore:
long may you run

highlights:
first off - the answer for igc was 3 neil young songs were played last night
that the girls have covered before (maybe more?) plus i heard old man on the
local artist stage at a lilith fair in 1998 (yep, really random igc).  in
any case, it was amazing to hear neil belt out those old favorites of his
especially since he & csn are the original rockers!!!  1969 rings a
csny-bell anybody???  i've seen neil before - and to see him with csn was
pretty amazing!  great songs to hear were: almost cut my hair, great guitar
solos in that, plus cinnamon girl to close out the first set.  our house,
harmonies were fantastic, and old man has a great sing-your-lungs out chorus
"i'm a lot like you were...".  ohio and (of course) down by the river were
amazing in the third-ish set...  so overall, even in a medium/large arena -
these guys still knew how to rock the house!!!

that's all...  back to our regularly schedule program...  and by the way, my
favorite ig song has to be burn all the letters.  ;)  and just maybe, i
might also say ghost, fugitive & love will come to you.

i must say that i have loved the girls since i first met them in april of 85. i have gone to as many shows as feasible, heck my 6 yr old has been to 7 shows!. anyway...i just got a most wonderful gift from amy s yesterday that i wanted to say thank you to her and to others who trade boots ......the early recording and blue food reminded me of the musical talent and harmony they share on top of everything else. i listened to all of em last night and had my girlfriend up way past her bed time listening too.....she loved it. she lost her mom and march is the anniversary month....it was good to see her smile at the words in so many of the songs and even see the tears well up on a few of them. thank you amy......thank you amy and emily for so very much.....

p.s. amy , i have yours and jude's projects begun........hope ya'll like...

it's very hard to pick one but i must say i especially love "language or the
kiss". it elicts such a vivid picture in my mind. i know if i were emily i
too would sometimes be torn between such a great career and missing all the
little but important things that happen with her family and her loved ones
when she is away doing a "job" she loves.

i'm still listening to the new album alot too...i really think its one of
their best! i love "go" and i can't figure out why it gets no radio
play...its as hard edged rock and roll as anything i hear played on the top
40 or alternative radio stations. oh well, i guess if they were more
mainstream it would be much harder to get concert tickets!!!!

hkf's,

*kerplunk* - onto my soapbox

the very sound of 'scalpers' and 'ticket brokers' make my stomach turn
upside down in disgust.  when you turn the corner headed towards your
favorite venue and you see someone asking for extras - 9 times out of 10
they aren't even going into the show - they are just looking for extra
tickets at face value to sell back to desperate concert goers for much more
than face.  and that bugs me 100 times more than an empty oj container
that's left in my fridge!!!  (and oj is my lifeblood, let me tell ya!)

so to help this ticket buying problem that we all encounter, i just put two
links on my webpage below all the tour date information.  basically, one is
from five horizons (pearl jam fan site) and the other is one person's page i
stumbled upon.  hopefully they will help you in some way or another.  bottom
line for me: hopefully this will get more tickets in the hands of us, the
fans, instead of more money in the hands of the 'scalpers'.  (yuck!  i told
you i hate that word...!)

i would have to second the vote for language or the kiss, although i
definitely prefer the stripped-down version on 1200 curfews to the more
heavily orchestrated version on so. i think it's one of emily's best, along
with love's recovery and ghost.

i'd also have to agree with the person who mentioned fugitive, though. i've
always kinda felt that comparing amy's songs to emily's is like apples to
oranges. they have such different writing styles, both of which i love in
their own ways. i could never compare blood and fire to language or the
kiss--they both move me, but in completely different ways.

i don't know--just my rambling thoughts on the subject. :)

also, there is a nice 1-page article on emily and her girlfriend and

sitting here listening to the cd's from amy s ( thanks again) i find it interesting how the voices, tone and passion in the songs ( some of them) have changed since they were first recorded to when they may have been put on later cd's for more public venue. one can expect a voice to change and mature over the years.
i find that also, the passion has matured on some of the songs each time they are played ( perhaps due simply to the time passage since they were inspired and written)

well, thanks to becky, i ordered tickets for the 3/31 ig show at eku.  whoo hoo!  show #14 for me!  and this summer at ravinia!  wow!  i can barely wait.  anyway, if you want to order tix for the eku show, call (606) 622-1242.  you can charge to visa or mastercard.the dude said something about not being able to guarentee postage.  i was like "wait?  you are going to put a stamp on the envelope, right?"  hopefully they'll use the correct amount of postage.  anyway...  i am psyched!  eku is only maybe a 5 hour drive (at most) from where my school is in central ohio.  so hopefully many indigohio people can make it?

i guess what my fav. ig songs are have always depended on where i am in my
life at the time, but i guess some of my favourites would include
"southland in the springtime" (very gentle, beautiful descriptive lyrics),
"shed your skin" (really different song which took me a lot of time to get
into, but i wouldn't dare do without it now!) and "the wood song" (for my
money, one of the songs where the harmonies of amy and emily really come
together)....

that's just my 0.02...

it's on (all) the austrian and australian 'touch me fall' cd

i'm not so sure.

attack of the killer b-sides volume two includes this, as well
as almost a complete, alternate swamp ophelia.

okay  i admitt it, my favorite ig song changes from time to time, i just
mentioned fugitive because it is a good song that was on my mind last
night.

i  love shed your skin  too because it's  sooooo sensual, i played it on
a mock radio station
a few years ago inhonor of those sultry summer evenings. when asked
which version  i prefer..
the tom morrello remix  or the original i definately  stick with the
original.  tom morrello's   is  a bit more than i can handle.

i  have to say though, that i just  love  watching  amy doing that song
on  my  pay per view performance tape,  the  song jst seems  so  totally
alluring....friendly, and yet
very strong. and that makes it very disarming..
renders one defenseless.  and that's  just talking about the
recordings... but actually seeing  amy doing it up close on tv.  is
quite an experience.

i still stand by what i wrote about fugiive too though.

hmmm...of course i seem to have a favorite song for all my moods (or,
should i say, for all the voices in my head--jk), but the one that has
stood the test of time would have to be land of canaan.  maybe it's
because it was the first ig song i heard or maybe because it's just a
great song, but it always seems to suit me, whatever that is at the

also, a song which they covered, which i love their version of, which has been a mainstay of mine since i heard it the first time is river......sparkie....

*love* sys. can't get enough of it.  i have to admit it's definitely one
of my favorite ig songs.

<shameless plug>
speaking of sexy kind of songs, melissa ferrick has a new album out called
freedom, and there's this song called drive on it.  it's probably the
hottest song i've ever heard.

the rest of the album is pretty good, too, and i highly
recommend it.  it may be in your local stores, or you can order it
directly from w.a.r. online at www.war.com.  she's on tour, so if you've
never seen her, and she's coming to a venue near you, go, go, go!  i don't
think you'll be disappointed.  i think if you go to the w.a.r. site,
there's also a link to where you can listen to some of the album either
through liquid audio or at the house of blues website.

</shameless plug>

favorite ig song right now?  gotta be "mystery" because someone has set up
their place in my thoughts and made my thinking crowded, and i can't get
that line out of my head. :)

yeah, me too.  i could have sworn that i read or heard somewhere that emily
and sue owens were together....
well, i guess this shows that the list doesn't talk too much about their
private lives -- as it should be.

i have favorite songs for all of my different moods and activities- which
fluctuate so often, i would not want to waste all of the space here.  but
to name a few:

sleepy and need to wake up fast:   i don't wanna know (especially the live
version on 1200 curfews) or make it easier
reminiscing & melancholy:          mystery
on top of the world:          closer to fine
really @#$$ed off:            faye tucker

right up there with my favorite ig songs are some of their covers - mainly
tangled up in blue (i died and went to heaven when they opened with it at a
show in berkeley a few years ago....),  daddy's all gone and romeo and
juliet - which may bring up another thread....  how about the best ig song
performed live?  hard to choose, but  how 'bout -
amy singing romeo and juliet live is incredible!
ozilline
strange fire

just some food for thought!

thanks erica. i checked around the website and the
talk back fields are all pretty specific. the best way
to ask for our girls to be on the show is through the
dear pi: field. it has to be in the form of a
question. i have already emailed them asking for a
rage member, tori and amy ray (especially amy ray) not
on the same show.

go to <http://abc.go.com/pi/talkback/talk_index.html>
to email your request in the form of a question.

love,
julie :)

oh yes, hot hot hot - and for more intense impact (at least it impacts
me intensely), read the lyrics first, then listen to the song.  you'll
be calling, no begging, your gf or bf to come over and "listen" with
you.  ;0

buy her album!  melissa ferrick is cute and funny and talented and cute

i e-mailed  their dear pi too.  i  hope  ig get on..  i  think that the
ig  together  make an ubeatable debate team.  though i would easily be
satisfied  with just one  of them on.  emily
might be just as good a candidate, because
amy  is a very strong speaker, her messages are full of punch.

but  emily's  sense of humor always shows
through in discusions,  and that makes her very animated just like a lot
of the other guests on pi and  sometimes  when i  listen to amy she
comes off so strong i sometimes feel hit over

hi, folks.<br>
<br>
here is information for the house of blues cd boot tree.  (house of
blues, chicago, il, 2/25/00--last dance with amy's appendix!)<br>
<br>
we're doing this by birthdays, folks.  send an email to the person
who is the branch for the month in which you were born, according to this
list:<br>

that person is your branch.  he or she will give you further
instructions for how to proceed.  please respond asap, as we only

copies that they can make.<br>
<br>
the boot is pretty good quality (a b++).  the actual songs are very
good, but there's a lot of crowd noise between them.  still, i think
the boot is significantly better than the show itself was.

an hour on tangled up in blue, and an hour on other songs, with a lot of
banter in between. it was really exciting

hey folks,

this is the article from the advocate about watershed...

-sherlyn

---begin article---
a place at her table
singing with the indigo girls may keep emily saliers busy,
but she still finds time even to bus tables at her
hometown restaurant, watershed

by stacie stukin
>from the advocate, march 28, 2000

when emily saliers of the indigo girls indulges her passion
for cooking, she's a purist. she eschews the convenience of
appliances like the cuisinart, preferring to chop, grate,
and slice all the ingredients by hand. "i love the alchemy
of food," says saliers, who grows animated at the mere
mention of julia child. "it is definitely an art."

and now the long-out folk-rock star has a canvas. about a
year ago saliers, her lover, leslie sweben, and two friends
opened watershed, a restaurant, wine bar, and boutique in
the atlanta suburb of decatur. among high ceilings, a pine
bar, and big glass doors left over from the site's
beginnings as a gas station, watershed's customers peruse
350 wine varieties and dig into entrees like bucatini with
sausage and roasted peppers. there's a fair share of
designer beers too.

saliers and sweben, who have been together five years,
opened the restaurant with another couple, ross jones and
susan owens, after the four decided "to do something
different," says owens, who owns an environmentally themed
gift shop nearby; sweben, for one, says she wanted to get
out of teaching. and saliers's impetus? "i'm a hedonist,"
she admits.

the four often travel together sampling fine food and
wines in famed restaurants such as the french laundry in
napa, calif., the gramercy tavern in new york, and
matsuhisa in los angeles. "there's nothing like sharing a
meal with friends," saliers says.

starting a business with buddies is tricky, but watershed,
which was financed by saliers, just celebrated its first
birthday, and chef scott peacock has landed some great
reviews. he's also partnering with legendary southern chef
edna lewis for an upcoming cookbook, and the juicy fried
chicken he makes as a weekly special at watershed has
attracted the attention of food & wine magazine.

the singer has some pull too, of course. "i have some pr
connections," saliers says in her understated manner.
"that's one thing i could bring to the business." she also
boasts hometown status in atlanta and shares southern
celebrity cachet with fellow musicians michael stipe and
elton john. while it's true stipe and saliers are friends,
sweben is cool about revealing whether watershed attracts
such patrons. "i haven't seen them here," she says.

maybe that's because her girlfriend downplays celebrity
herself. saliers, who says she eats at the restaurant about
three times a week, also buses tables and tends bar. she's
equally low-key in describing the gay and straight
clientele. "we get a lot of people from the neighborhood-
young professionals, retired couples," says the singer,
who put her beer-slinging duties on hold in february, when
she began an acoustic tour to support the indigo girls'
latest cd, come on now social.

when she isn't performing on the road or cleaning up at
watershed, saliers loves to invite friends over for dinner,
serving wines from her cellar and cooking dishes such as
sweben's favorite, wild mushroom risotto. "these parties
sometimes last eight or ten hours," she marvels. "i just
love to cook, especially when someone else does the
dishes."

stukin also writes for harper's bazaar and us.

hmmm...i'd have to say one of my fave's is "southland in the springtime."

this song embodies so much of the nice images of the south--and, it allows
great harmonies for the girls.

also, it seems to me much of their history is is this song--what it was like
growing up with the good things in the south--the boiled peanuts, the quilts
made by hand.

i dislike so many issues and politics in the south--as a charlestonian born,
and, as a current resident of columbia, sc (where the flag flies and the
naacp rallies), i can safely say that it is lovely to hear somethin' bout the
southland--as it brings back the important memories from childhood and makes
me believe that the good images are what keeps us together as a human race.

hmm monday i hear smashing pumpkins are playing a couple blocks from my
apartment...this is cool.

my landlord calls and offers me a new larger apartment which is gorgeous - i
tell him tuesday i am interested.

i got dunkin donuts coffee on the way to work. bliss!
(usually i am stuck with starbucks at work, not that i am complainng)

i get into work - read about unh - six years almost to the day of one of the
most touching moments (i think many from the list at the time would agree)
amy and emily ever did onstage - my friend bill, who i knew since i was
eight died three days cefore the show on 4/22/94.  a very special person on
this list let them know that

emily dedicated the song to bill
the song : ghost...

never in my life have i been soooooo touched (and i have it on cdr but my
copy still isn't as good as the copy i lost from years ago...)
and actually - i found the f'ing tape being sold in boston at a record
store!

but i digressed..someone came over to offer another coffe - went with decaf
dunkin donuts - life at that point is going well.

lunch comes - we uncharacteristically order out then again (philly steak and
cheese)

as i am eating - the manager for a job i applied for (within my company)
offered it to me!!!!!!

i accepted - and my mom called to ask why the hell i wanted to move to
another apartment - i babbled something...got home - looked at the apartment
and am moving as we speak - coolness ...

i even took my folks out - they were psyched!

friday i get to move - buy ig tixs, go to boston, perhaps catch the bu vs
umaine (go bears) hockey east semi final and then see great big sea (very
very great band - not as good as ig - but fun)

saturday i'm heading down to nyc to see gbs again!

so life has been eventful...but i've been having the strangest juxapositions
of songs in my head for random times - i was in the elevator with people i
barely knew and i just had the overwhelming urge to sing ani's "untouchable
face" - and i wasnt angry...

too many good shows - the 3/25 sanders theater folk show - catpower the next
night (twice!) (a possible lecture monday - need to judge if i can sneak in
to a conference) csny that night - tracy a week and a half later and ig and
smashing pumpkins - not too shabby...

fave web site i looked at in 3 days - heathers - simplistic, yet incredible.
very diy...

last station tuned into - whyy philly - realaudio @ work.

peace -
mike r.

chickenman, jonas and ezekial, for amy and let s see, least complicated,
virginia woolf, ghost, mystery, for emily.

hey all,

i am new to this list serve, but i think it is cool to
find others who think the ig rock as much as i do.

i have to say that i agree with several others of you
who think that ghost is their favorite song.

it wasn't until i was dealing with a breakup that it
became my fav. song.

fare thee well is also another one.

ciao.

i have to put on the top of my list of favorite songs - the wood song
(i can just see mike c sitting at his computer singing it to himself -
wrong words and all).  whenever i've had a situation that i felt i
wouldn't be able to handle, i would always listen to the wood song,
and even though the problem didn't always go away, that song always
gave me the strength to handle it.

also 2 songs i hold separately from everything else are blood & fire
and love's recovery.  being a huge emily admirer, my other favorites
of hers are virginia wolfe, 10,000 wars and ghost.

wish me luck everybody.  i'm getting my tickets tomorrow for the unh
show. i always stress out when i try getting tickets for the girls (i'll have
to listen to the wood song on the way).

happy happy birthday to barbara b.

<<does anyone know 'opacity@webtv.net'?  she goes by 'toering5'
on ebay>>

i am aware of her work.
(i relise that no one will get the joke just there. bonus points
if you do).

<<and is consistently selling bootlegs on ebay claiming that
they're official releases.>>

she's never claimed they're offical, just professionally
manufactured, which isn't quite the same.

<<she's making thousands off ig, and i'm wondering if anyone has
any info on her.  i know it's not really my business, but it
pisses me off, so i'm making it my business.>>

i know her details, but i'm not sharing on the list - that would
be wrong.

some suggestions:

- a polite email to her.
- complain to ebay, rcam, or anyone else.
- post an idential item subject line, but have a dutch auction
selling a report for $0.01 where to get them for free.
- do as she does and break ebay policy - email anyone who bids
telling them they're boots and freely available.
- a 'never pay money for an ig boot' web campaign. everyone with
a ig website has a prominent link to a page with the details (i
have such a page at www.indigogirls.org but it needs a little
work).

note: some 'bootlegs', while unauthorized, were produced and
sold entirely legally with artists and composers royalties paid.
as such their resale may also be legal.

hi,

my name is joe. i am a straight guy who is new to the mailing list and have
been (until i found this mailing list) the biggest indigo girls fan i ever
knew. i discovered them on vh-1 in 1989, and we all know what happens after
the first time you ever hear one of their songs.

i've always wondered, why do they have such a huge gay following. looking
back, it seemes to me that the "outing" songs are on the more recent cd's. i
mean unless i missed somthing huge in the lyrics i've didn't pick up on any
message.

it's something i've always been courioius about, and reading the e-mails it
seemes that this is an open enough fourm for me to ask.

there is no reason to be offended, i'm sorry if my inquirey does, but i'm
just looking to answer a question involving the music and wisdom that changed
and now forges my life.

thank you,
joe

good question, joe.  i think part of it is that they were "outted" within the gay
community before they were outted to the  world at large, and there seems to be a
large amount of political support for gay artists within the gay community.
believe me, i've heard some terrible musicians receiving lauds and kudos based
more on their sexual orientation than on any musical prowess.  in some ways, it
reminds me of the christian music industry in this regard.

now, allow me to say the needless and point out that amy and emily do not fall
into the category of politically supported yet artistically minimal artists.  but
i do think that political support is part of their appeal within the gay
community.  at the very least, it may get some people who might not typically sit
down to listen to "that folk rock stuff" to give one of their cds a try, and as
we all know, that's typically all someone needs to get hooked.

i think another part of it is that, as lesbian women, they fill a need within our
society at large as "glamour sex objects".  we are so constantly barraged with
sexual images in all manner of non-sexual contexts, simply on the basis of
"marketing."  however, there are very few "stars" that a gay man or woman can
look at with lust and feel some kind of reciprocal energy from them, even though,
in marketing, all of that reciprication is actually projected, and isn't real at
all.

i can look at photos of richard karn (al from home improvement) selling things
all day, and think all kinds of sexy thoughts about him, but ultimately any
identification, and therefore any cross-over appeal the product may have, is lost
because richard karn isn't going to do me, no matter how much i may want him to.

granted, ig doesn't do much in the way of celebrity spokesmodelling.  i like
that.  but it does make for, at times, a fairly rabid crowd of women at their
concerts, carrying on over amy while she's on stage like she were john, paul,
george, and just a little ringo all rolled into one curve-filled package.  and
knowing that she "could" pick some luscious chick out of the audience and take
her home... makes the fantasy all the more real.

ultimately, though, the reason why i think they connect with gays and lesbians so
well is for the same reason they connect with any ig fan well -- what they have
to share and say and sing about reflects and clarifies thoughts within their
audience.  i firmly believe that gay men and lesbians have a common past which
can tie them together, despite all other differences -- they have all made the
inner and outer journies that have allowed them to step outside the bounds of our
culture and be themselves.  it's a difficult road to travel.  i'd venture to say,
most ig fans have had to make this journey in some form or another, because in
their music, what i find is the documentation of their journeys.  i'm not sure
that ig connects with people who haven't had to introspect to make sense of it
all.  not in my experience of meeting people, anyway.

"the music that changed and now forges my life"...  i love how you express
yourself!  you may not be gay, but i can tell, you're a kindred spirit!

-graham

i can't really answer your question joe. but i thought
i would point out that i liked the indigo girls long
before i knew they were gay, and even a long time
before i heard rumors that they were gay. of course
i'm male...
one guess about their early large lesbian following is
simply that there aren't too many popular girl duos
out there. "thelma and louise" weren't gay but still
obvious lesbian superheros. same with any larger than
life female pairing, i would suspect.

i started listening to them in 1989 and liked them very much.  i had no
idea they were gay (and i'm gay myself).  in fact, someone else told me
they were gay.  i do admit to escalating the level of my adoration after
i found out.

well, i have known the girls since 1985. and actually it wasn't until about 87 or so that i knew they were gay. i am gay and have been all my life.

i think that perhaps , my take on the issue, the following is such a mix of people . but the reason there is a gay population who listen to them and their words and wisdom is that they do not point fingers of judgement , their songs do not have a specific gender relation in them. they are easily adaptable if you will for who ever is listening to them.

so many other artist/songs are implying a heterosexual relationship in their lyrics . i find it interesting how many gays have found a favorite song...written by a het. for the heterosexual realm if you will...they merely change a few of the words to make it "fit" for themselves. with the indigo girls and several others...there is no changing needed.....there is no implied orientation in their music.

but that is digging deep into the possible reasons.....overall.....i think that due to their openness, honesty, emotions and everything else that they have always put for with such passion and no hiding....just there.....these are feelings emotions, and wishes that many gays wish they could do...be that open...that honest....

my .02....sparkie

i kind of wonder about this question in a slantwise way, which is:

i wonder if the music of the girls, an affection for the music developed before
somebody knew they were lesbians, has had a positive influence on a person's view
of les/bi/gay/trans people...

if anybody on the list has been influenced away from homophobia or knows anyone
who has been, and is not too shy to say so, that would sure be interesting to
know.

in a really great documentary called "it's elementary", there is a moment where a
teacher holds up a picture of melissa etheridge to his class of 5th graders. all
the kids start pointing at one student saying "she loves her, she loves her"...
then the teacher reveals to the class that me is a lesbian. the girl's jaw hits
the floor. she obviously had no idea, but loved the music. i hope she kept loving
the music.

i wonder if there are any folks out there who had a similar experience with ig.

just wondering myself...

i beg to differ.  a quote from acoustic guitar magazine: "amy ray plays
a battery of martin guitars. ray's main ones are an 0-18, a black j-40m,
a d-35, and a j-40 12-string"

well, amy does have a hollow body gibson, which tends to look black, but
really is brown. she has been using this on "go" and a number of other songs
from the new cd. her black guitar, which is listed as a-1 on the set lists,
is the j-40m from martin. if i'm not mistaken, it's a custom guitar which is
not on the product list from martin. (martin does sell regular j-40's )

my question is: why did both amy and emily decide to change from fender
strats to gibson les paul guitars? (which do not look new but rather used)

at the risk of "me too"-ing, i'll say "me too, good post graham," and add
something to it.

the other thing is that i think ig offers a different kind of femininity
than most popular cultures that might appeal to women whose lives and drives
don't match the spice girls's.  not to say i don't like the spice girls, i
too enjoy gettin jiggy with if you wanna be my lover.  it's just that i
think ig offer a visible way of being female with a different set of ideas
about what that means.  it kinda reminds me of all the lesbians into billy
jean king.  it's not so much that ig is gay, bjk wasn't to my knowledge, but
that they offer a publicly visible different way of being feminine.

and they don't sing about the same damn thing all the time--boys and love
lost (although they do, to be sure, sing about both).

my 2 pence,

jennifer kimball, (once of the story - among the finest acoustic duo acts of
the early 90s) is coming to play and andi and neil's house this coming
monday and you're all invited.

the catch? well, $10 for the chance to see a wonderful singer

only a few (and i mean a few) tickets left, so if you're near philadelphia
why not escape the monday blues just this once?

well..this is sorta what happened to me...i fell in love with rites of
passage before i even really knew who a&e were...i had a few people say to
me, "oh you know they're gay, right?" -- like i'm gonna go..."oh my god!
destroy the cd!!" it's like all those people who trashed their milli vanilli
cd's after the lip-synching thing went down...the music was the same, so what
is the problem?? (actually, another example...i have always adored martina
navratilova..like back in the 80's before she came out i used to follow her
career with a vengeance...)  anyway...so i listened to them and melissa
before i knew that they were gay...and before i knew i was bi..

i'm not sure what my point is...basically, i think my coming to terms with
being bisexual was made a whole hell of a lot easier, since i have been fans
of martina, ig, melissa, etc.

interesting..

well.. if truth be known.. us gearheads have nothing better to do with our
time then look at every guitar and piece of gear brought out on stage. we
delight on being able to say "oh look.. it's the 0-18 or.. look.. it's em's
"big" d-45.. or hey..i use the same capo..or.. i have the tu-12 chromatic
tuner.. or i was thinking of buying that amp."  while i'm not saying that amy
doesn't have 2 black guitars, i am saying that she only tours with one. the
j-40m. is it possible that she has 2 j-40m's? yes, it's possible however, if
you notice the pick scrapes, which kinda are like fingerprints, you'll notice
that the same guitar is out on the stage everytime.

also, if you ever have a chance to ask that wonderful and understated guitar
tech.. you'll find many answers to gear questions.

all i am it's a safe bet to turst the information provided here.

i think the big gibson is the electric she has been playing and it's really
kind of dark brown not really black that's the only thing i can think of
that would be considered black and a gibson...cause as said before the black
acoustic is a martin j-40m...

hi everyone,

i posted about those ig concert posters for sale at the
visual gallery website.  well, there is an opportunity
for another one.  bob masse, one of the acclaimed
poster artists, has been commissioned to design
a poster for the april 15 ig concert (off the top of
my head, i'm not sure where that one is), and he
needs a live concert photo for the poster design.
they are asking me to ask you, the list, to search
for your best live ig photo and allow them to use
it for the april 15 concert poster.  please read
below for more information and follow the
instructions from alisdair horn if you want to
help.  it's urgent, so get right on it if you're
interested.  it's a great opportunity!  thanks!

here's the scoop :-) bob masse has scored an indigo girls concert april
15th, and is designing a poster to promote it. this is great news, and
he wants to find a fan that has a  live photo to use for the central
image. what i need really fast is for you to announce to the message
boards/newsgroups and
to anywhere else you can find that he is looking for good live photos
(they
need to be live shots) that they would like to have put into an actual
concert poster design. i need to choose the final photo in the next 5
days so
there isn't much time. please ask people to send images to me at
ahorn@visualgallery.com

i will either need a hard copy or a very high quality digital (e-mailed)
image once i choose the winning photo but i won't need that to decide,
just
any image is fine as long as i can make it out easily.

please reply asap amd let me know when you've posted the request. this
is
extremely urgent so please try and get the word out as soon as you can
:-)
sorry for the short notice, i just found out tonight :-)
thanks a million! :-)

so, i received an email from toering5, the person who has several ig
bootlegs for sale on ebay as you're reading this (including early
recordings, which i think is up to $127, as i sit here dubbing copies right
now for cathy casey - hi cathy <<frantic waving>>).  i don't want to break
list policy by posting her email to the list, but i do want your opinions on
this, so i hope you'll grant me some leeway.

she states: "it gives people a chance to get what they want at their
price---not mine" and says she doesn't understand why i'm so angry.

is this a valid argument?  does anyone else see her side?  should i not be
angry after spending every day dubbing these for people at cost? my
confidence is slipping these days, and for some reason, i look for
validation/rejection in almost everything i do.  i need to work on that, but
in the meantime, would appreciate y'all's insight into this important issue
as a list discussion.

is it ever okay to sell bootlegs?  cause, i gotta say, damn, i could be
making some money if it is.  and if it's not, which, you know, is what i
believe, then how do you convince someone that what they're doing is wrong?

personally i think the music belongs to everyone, its not right for her to
make money off of it when it's not her voice, her words, or her playing.  i
think that's one of the greatest things about this list is that everyone is
willing to share the music.  by making profit off of those boots she's going
against everything that ig stands for.  i hate to say it but discrediting
toering5 may be the only way, tell people about what's really available, i
don't know how all that stuff works though, so i don't know how you'd do
that.  but i don't think there is any way to make her see the light.  esp.
if she's only in the music for the money.

i've actually been mulling over this very issue quite a bit of late, and have
come up with a solution, at least one which makes sense to me.

if i were a recording artist, i'd have this collected body of work, some of it
early recordings, some of it studio stuff, some of it live recordings.  what i
would do, then, is to decide and announce exactly what of my catalog was to be
sold, and what was to be never sold.  so, if ig were to do this, and announce
that, say, blue food was in the never to be sold category, then if i were to
walk into a cd store and find bootleg copies of that there, i could call rcam or
whomever and let them know that someone is violating the "not for sale"
copyright.

okay, it's not a perfect solution, but since we've seen statements from amy and
emily on their feelings about mp3s and bootlegs, this isn't too far a stretch.

but really, tara, i think that ebay has some kind of policy about this kind of
thing...  i'm sure it's been discussed here, even.  have you looked at their
policy pages?

as far as your ethical question goes:  imho, it's never right to sell something
that someone else has created without their permission and without them getting
a fair share of the profits.  and, sadly, i also believe that the only behavior
you can control is your own, and if someone isn't going to jump onto your side
of an issue, there's nothing you can do to convince them otherwise.  if there
were any sure-fire easy way to win people's opinions, the world would be in much
better (or worse) shape than it already is in.

beware - a little devils advocacy ahead. see if you can spot it.

<<she states: "it gives people a chance to get what they want at their
price---not mine">>

but her opening price for the three early recordings is always $80, so she's
giving a helping hand there...

<<is this a valid argument?  does anyone else see her side?>>

kinda. sorta.
say you're a top lawyer person, earning $400/hour and your kid/best
friend/partner wants a bootleg. you can either spend your time looking for
one for free (say it takes you a half hour = $200) or you can bid on one on
ebay for $50. it's cheaper to do that.

<<should i not be angry after spending every day dubbing these for people at
cost?>>

don't get mad. get even :o)

or to put it another way, think of all the people you've helped by saving
them many $$. and diverting it away from those who sell.

another thought - if everyone who bought an indigo girls album knew they
could get bootlegs from you for free, you'd be so busy you'd never get a
chance to sleep.

<<is it ever okay to sell bootlegs?>>

kinda had this discussion in private w/tara yesterday. i would have no
problem with selling my 'original' bootlegs (i sure didn't have any problem
buying them) because they _do_ have some colllectable value. (as i said,
some were legal and had royalties paid, but really, i couldn't say
definitively which ones, or if the artist ever actually saw the money).

some 'official', 'original' bootlegs are even produced on cdr, so i don't
think it's as simple as avoiding cdrs.

with early recordings 1-3, they are described as being the originals, if
that's the case i would say they can be sold (because they were bought). but
as i said, i have trouble though believing one person has so many original
sets!

i'm guessing that some boots she sells are her creations, i'm not sure how
that affects things?

<<then how do you convince someone that what they're doing is wrong?>>

you can't. at least, i don't think one person emailing will with all that $$
rolling in. maybe an official cease and desist letter from the ig lawyers
could, but...

so - beat them at their own game. the more these are available, the lower
the price will become. supply and demand. get the word out. sell 'reports'
on ebay for 0.01 with the same description line as the boots. complain. bid
stupid high so you win the auction then refuse to pay for a bootleg. email

the bidders and offer to make them copies for free. do whatever you think
you have to.

my personal rule - if people want to sell boots, that's their business and
their risk. and if people want to pay $$ for them and not research where to
get them free, that's their problem.

but this all changes when it's a boot that i (or one of my friends) made.
then it's personal, and i will do anything and everything i can to oppose
them. i just can't police all boots. and i don't want to.

i think tara has to make a choice as to whether to persue early recordings
1-3 as hers or accept that there are many, many copies out there that don't
have her involvement.

i'm trying to educate people - all my ig boot web pages say 'you should
never pay money for a boot' with an explanaition, and it really works. so i
think the idea of a igwebwide campaign is a good one (i'll work on getting a
banner and a page made up unless someone else want to do it).

to graham's point:
<<what i would do, then, is to decide and announce exactly what of my
catalog was to be sold, and what was to be never sold.>>

but that's already the case. all ig bootlegs are supposedly never to be
sold. but emily's getting into dangerous territory by saying she doesn't
want her solo tape traded. what if amy decided the same? would we all give
up our copies of color me gray? i think not. is someone being totally
hippocritical when they refuse to trade emily's solo tape but were happy to
accept a copy in the first place?

my favoured solution is what was happening in australia a while back.
bootlegs were legal as long as artists' and composers' royalties were paid.
the discs had to be clearly marked as 'unathorized - may not be the same
quality as an official release'.
no one was duped into thinking a boot was an official release, folks got
paid for their work, and bootlegs were cheap and plentiful. (furthermore
they were also excellent quality as they were taken mostly from radio
broadcasts.)

i talk too much, but this is my favourite subject. i shut up.

<< is it ever okay to sell bootlegs?  cause, i gotta say, damn, i could be

well here is my too sense...i used to peruse ebay before i discovered so many
people were traders...i spent a lot of money buying cdr's because i didn't
know any better...i think this is why a lot of people use ebay..

on the tori-boot list, there are lots of traders who follow ebay and e-mail
the bidders to let them know that they can get the cdr's cheaply - ie a 2for1
or a flat fee for postage and cdr costs (this is what most tori fans
do...b&p's are rather rare..) the only reason this chick is probably pissed
at you is cause you are taking money out of her pocket. (also in tori-boot
land there is a notorious seller named mikectw whose only source of income is
selling boots and he hates the tori-boot list because of their interference
with his business..)

i don't see any any problem with 2for1's, b&p's or even a flat fee (we're
talking like $10 here which includes the price of the cdr, the jewel case,
postage and artwork..)

a lot of tori fans don't see any problem with selling silver pressed
boots...i personally don't see the difference because bootlegs are bootlegs
(i realize that the silver boots may be of higher quality than cdr's but...)

anyway, there you go.

tara, (to whom i wrote before privately also about this) i am 110% behind
you!!!

no, it is not a valid argument.  ever.  tara's doing the right thing by the
fans, at a personal loss. toering5 is not.  if i got a bootleg in my
possession, i'd share it, not look to make money off of it. plus, this
attracts the attention of the riaa, etc, and makes "music piracy" an issue.
it creates heat for those sharing the songs just for fun.

tara, be validated.  you are a true indigo girls fan.  it's not the money
that your into--it's the music.  for that, i give you a round of applause.

follow your heart tara, it will never lead you astray.  remember anger can be
constructive at times.  it can be the force that pushes us out of the security
of the doldrums of our everyday existence and gives us the confidence to make
the world a better place.  the internet is changing our world like nothing
that has ever come before it and there are still not many rules or social
norms governing this frontier.  if you only keep one person from buying a
boot, then you have made a difference...and you don't have to keep at this
forever...within time, most of us will have cd burners and will be trading cd
boots just like we have been trading tape boots...and then you can take a bit
of a breather if you like or pass the torch to another listee.

i guess i'd say the sort of same thing - listening to music by artists like
the ig and ani made it far easier to accept the fact that i was gay. when i
grew up, i was told for the most part that being gay was somehow strange or
wrong. listening to music by people like the ig, and watching people like
ellen degeneres made it easier to see that the gay part of myself shouldn't
be denied.

if you are making money on something that you didn't record, write, or
perform you are stealing!

you are taking candy from the shelves and not paying, you are living in an
apartment and not paying rent.

you didn't "discover" the indigo girls, someone from epic records did.

the moral guidelines on this issue were drawn a long time ago.

let me enter into the argument here by coming out as someone who, with a
little less knowledge than i should have and a little less values than i
have on this fine day, did start a bid on an ebay item, a live video
recording.   i did it because i am geographically isolated, interested and
have nothing at all to offer in exchange except for money.  i would have
gone through with the trade (it was just days before i joined the ig list
again) if ebay had not cancelled it.  i took this to mean that someone from
the list or some other good person decided that the ebay auction was
illegal, which it was and informed them of the same.

i am a bit embarrassed about it all, i was more desperate than i should have
been and instead of just coping with the fact that i am unlikely to get this
material and sticking with the legal stuff, which i am pretty sure i have
all of, i did the wrong thing.  i had the good sense to not try to contact
the seller about it after the auction was cancelled.  the bid had gone well
over $100 at this stage and i am reasonably certain its rigged anyway, i
have heard about simple processes for not having to pay off ebay, by simply
stating that the other person pulled out after you set up a false account
and i was bidding against a hotmail account.

i thought i should mention this here so that people could understand why
someone who really believes in artists rights etc would sort of stoop this
low, its silly and its unfair, but at the time i thought it was my only
alternative, i am pretty sure that the better alternative is to just cope
with it, rather than ripping off someone i respect.

regards,
sandy

lawyers & taxman promote?
and i could argue that music stores don't exactly promote, they just sell.
and how about distributors, van and tour bus drivers, the producer - umm,
you get the idea

but that's not important right now, but it does lead to a deeper (possibly
rhetorical) philosophical question:

selling three hits for $30 (for which you paid $25) - is that also stealing?
what about club r+r for $150 when you paid $20?
and is that better or worse than selling a history of us for $30 (for which
you paid $25)?
or if you sell it for $20 when you paid $30?

just interested in peoples viewpoints?

wanna see how much an artist really gets screwed (legitamately)??

i think if you play closer to fine backwards, they chant we are gay we are
gay.

just joking....
i can't speak for everyone but for me i liked the indigo girls long before i
knew they were gay.  so knowing that they are lesbians, makes the music for
me even more sweeter.

but, let me take this a step further, for me, i don't care what the artists
or musicians sexual orientation is or isn't....i like music on its own
merit.

my 2 cents, blink blunk.

this is a plug for a guy mendilow concert, a student i go to school with.
remember his name, i'm sure he's gonna do great things.  he performs with a
handful of other obies-- i think they're called the mt. oberlin boys and
girls (mt. oberlin, fyi, is this little hill that is nonetheless the highest

roots, etc.  cool stuff.

it's called gay dar. melissa had a huge lesbian
following before she ever said the word "lesbian". so
did ellen. i know i watched ellen because everyone
said she was gay, she obviously was, and on rumors of
the upcoming coming out episode. same thing with ig.
besides, they came out (in interviews) relatively
early.

i think a more interesting question would be why gay
bands have such large gay followings. we relate to
them better? they are more talented? (we wish gayness
made people more artistically talented). we like to
see ourselves represented in the culture surrounding
us? (there is research supporting this, at least for
african americans). we think amy/emily is cute? what
does everyone think?

i know personally ig is kind of a role model.  they're gay, they're open
with it, and their succesful, they don't let homophobia stand in their way
and they don't use to their advantage.  also i think amy is pretty hot.
(but that's just a side note)

i would be highly surprised in a & e did anything to promote or participate
in mm (btw, i'll be participating in the mmm - ask and i'll tell)
considering their stance on anything regarding hrc, which is my stance too,
for more reasons than what they gave. as soon as hrc does more than give
token acknowledgement to the tg community, maybe i'll support them. but as
long as they marginalize this community which is so near and dear to my
heart, and as long as they funnel money to campaigns of anti-choice,
anti-woman candidates, they won't see a dime of my support. in fact, i will
continue to tell everyone i know what *i* know about hrc and their
backstepping lies.

if this march had the support of more of the community, i could see going.
instead, it is an event put forth by hrc to raise money for themselves and
mcc. and i'm an agnostic and don't care to support mcc either.

not to mention the fact that no one "needs" to go....hell, i wonder who can
afford it.

amy and emily are against people making alot of money of their music - i've
seen $7 buck phish cdr's (that's reasonable) i guess through shows or
something - but the 80 bucks for 3 cdrs of early records is rediculous
(altho the original cdr of er 1 2 or 3 - first printing is probably worth
$100)

any idea how much the 1st pressing history of us kts release would snag?
(pressed, not burned - i'd think $100 would be a collectors price...)

but whatever - pissed off i waited for ig tixs this morning - theyt switched
to tomorrow - when freaking buffet goes onsale -

are they the same exact time??????

ummm...

that was from friday - *i* did snag front row unh tixs on saturday - it was
pretty crazy - but there are ways to do it - if you need a single go to the
ticketmaster and have them do a "opens" - usually they have closer seats on
the sides than the "best  available" seats.

very tired from walking and driving around new england (though, i did find
the absote best store for boots - (no ig, i checked) butr the two discs i
got were pressed - not burned - the store is in the lower east side of
manhatten - if you want the specifics - let me know - i am not letting the
info out for the world to see....

>see ourselves represented in the culture surrounding
>us?

hey there--this whole thread is really interesting to me and i am not a
sociology buff or anything like that.  it is very obvious that gay bands do
have a lot of gay followers.  my own experience with ig was that i, as many
others have mentioned, got into them long before i knew they were gay and
even longer before i knew i was gay.  i recall being in college and having
all these ig posters on my wall along with all these erasure posters and
then in the middle of it all was a picture of three women's assess in
patriotic tight bikinis with the title "america the beautiful".  talk about
desparately trying to hide--but that's another story. :)

but seriously, i think ig lyrics speak to the college population.  it's
kind of a tumultuous time in life and their earlier stuff was so good to
just relate to.  and they prided themselves then on being so universal with
their lyrics.  but subliminally (at least for me) i think it is no
coincidence that my fandom increased as i discovered they were gay and then
grew tenfold as i came out myself.  maybe gay folks just like to support
their own so to speak.  i never liked melissa etheridge or kd lang but when
they came out publically i said hey i'll give em a chance and be
supportive.  they grew on me.  and cmon, gay boys out there, you know you
bought george michael's greatest hits double cd after he came out.

i dunno--as i said i think it's just that gay people (like other
minorities) tend to support their own.  i always hated martina navritilova
as a tennis player but then she came out and i gave her a chance.  same for
elton john.  btw, this doesn't mean i love all gay celebrities and think
they walk on water.

so i think for many it's a matter of loving ig as singers and songwriters
but also having the chance to support a duo who publically said hey we're
normal and so are you.  it's a sense of validation maybe like--hey we made
it.  ok-ramble mode off.  see ya

well all, i returned from an out of town trip to literally, over a hundred
emails from our favorite profitting bootlegger toering5.  she's just a
little pissy.  just to let you all know, i took your combined advice and
reported her.  to ebay (who did nothing), to rcam, to riaa, to the copyright
office, to epic and sony records, to mpa, to amy (to the best of my
ability), and lastly, to the fbi.  at this point, there's really nothing
else we can do.  i guess you have to figure that if you make the effort and
nothing happens, then that's really their fault and not ours, and at least,
we tried.

incidentally, she reported me to everyone too. seems she believes that my
bootleg activities are on the same level as hers.  funny... i've never made
any money.... hmmm.... not that making money is the only illegality of
bootlegging, but, you know, at least my activity has the a&e stamp of
approval - as far as we know.  and maybe hers will too in the end, who
knows.  but in any case, all has been done that can be, so anyone else who
takes it upon themselves to pursue this, know that you are most likely
duplicating effort.

just to let y'all know what's going on.

ryan,

>>if this march had the support of more of the community, i could see
going. instead, it is an event put forth by hrc to raise money for
themselves  and mcc. and i'm an agnostic and don't care to support mcc

i can appreciate your point of view, and i agree with you to a degree.
however, the average citizen of this country knows nothing of any of
that.  when they see the march on the news, they won't understand the
reservations that the community has with the event, all they will see
is how many people did or did not show up.  and if no one shows up,
that is what they will see, and they will draw their conclusions from
that... things like, the community isn't that large, the community
isn't organized, the community is small enough to continue to be
ignored, i don't have to worry about them because they are "no threat"
to me.

that is not a message i want to send to anyone, especially people that
are already unsupportive.  i want them to see a community that is not
afraid to stand up and be counted.  so i will be there, regardless of
my personal reservations, because it won't be hrc or mcc that we're
hurting by no showing up, it will be ourselves.

i encourage everyone to go, i think it's important, even if it is a bit
of an akward situation.  we need to overwhelm washington with out
numbers and out enthusiam.  especially now when so many states are
working against us in their legislatures.

they have been organizing in their own self-interest for over 2 years! and
it has been brought up that this is more likely to blow up in their faces
than any of the previous marches and yet they continued to plan. this shows
me they don't care two whits about what the community wants.

frankly, i could hop a plane and head out there and i know how powerful
marches can be, at least symbolically, but i refuse to bail out this
exclusionary organization.

there is a huge effort to get people involved at the state and local levels
which is sponsored by ngltf called "equality begins at home". and it should
be noted that ngltf does more than give token acknowledgment to the trans
community.

i'll point you to the following for more info on the boycotts currently
taking place.

http://foranopenprocess.org

now i certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone going. i just think it is important
to go in with open eyes, that unlike the marches in '79, '87 and '93 (the
latter two which i was lucky enough to attend), this march is about money
for a select few.

yes! i can see it now! with a website done up tastefully in black and blue,
you could respectfully request tickets to virtually any concert or event
across the nation and abroad. and of course, the "convienience charge" is
quite high, since inconvieniencing the ticketmistress can be hazardous to your
health. instead of tacking on an extra charge onto the price of the tickets,
you are flogged for the convienience, paddled for the seating, and spanked for
the shipping. and all the way through you say "thankyou ticketmistress for
getting these tickets for me from the comfort of my own home". and we all well
return to the ticketmistress time and time again, since we really do like the
abuse more than waiting in line...

just a silly thought.

now back to our regularly scheduled list indigo content...

you left out the irs  :)  now, there's an agency that instills fear in
me, those bastards.

you have every right to be angry and report whomever for illegal
selling of boots.  actually, maybe reporting the activity to the irs
might be appropriate - i don't know.  shouldn't this person be reporting
income she makes on ebay to (bowing my head) the all powerful irs
(those bastards)?  or do you have to make a certain amount before you're
taxed on it?  any tax attorneys or cpas out there?

elaine - taxes and numbers over 100 and complicated math give me

hey everyone!
eku is eastern kentucky university--the girls have a show there on march
31st. are karen and i the only ones who are going to this show? since it's
general admission, and i want to be close, i want to get there early. but
i'm not sure how to judge it...how crowded is this show gonna be? the eku
students are back in class and most likely won't be lining up in the
morning, will they? sure, i might be if i were an eku student, but i'm
not....so, any input? anyone want to wait in line with me and show ourselves
as truly dedicated indigo fans?
peace,
becky

pretty old article (it was written when "shaming . . . " came out) about
ig and another artist and their role in folk music.  have you seen this

<br>

folk music is all over the place these days. there's beck with

his hip-hop folk, ani difranco with her punk-folk, and jewel

with her sexy, wet-lipped pop-folk. relative to that lot, the

veteran duo indigo girls and newcomer laura love sound almost

like folk traditionalists.<p>indigo girls have been so good for so long--they were formed in

1983--it's easy to yawn when they come out with yet another

solid album. it's sort of like michael jordan scoring 30 points:

unless he scores 50, is it really news? still, indigo girls'

pleasant new album, the shaming of the sun (epic), represents a

noteworthy step in the evolution of the pair,

singer/songwriter/guitarists amy ray and emily saliers. the

girls, who are both gay (but not a couple), became more open

about their sexuality a few years ago, and on sun their music

seems to have come out as well. their past albums were

concerned, in an almost solipsistic way, with their interior

lives; on shaming of the sun, the ebb and flow of their emotions

are linked more closely with happenings in the outside world.<p>in shame on you, a wordy, rambunctious number that evokes early

springsteen, ray sings of restlessly driving the roads only to

be stopped by police "looking for illegal immigrants." in the

piano ballad leeds, saliers sings of being drunk and depressed

in a hotel room watching "16 black churches burning on the tv."

the album is rarely preachy, and the sociological context--plus

some canny rock-guitar riffs--give the girls' music even more

bite than it's used to.<p>love, 37, is both a newcomer and a veteran: a well-known figure

in the seattle music scene, she's released three albums on her

own, as well as a compilation on the independent label putumayo

world music; her mostly affable new cd octoroon (mercury), due

out may 13, is her major-label debut. love has a voice rich with

dark shadings and rural twang. she calls her music afro/celtic,

but it's mostly front-porch folk with a few twists. one song,

simple, offers up a mix of blues harmonica and funky guitar. her

topics are very coffeehouse--there's a pro-tree song--but

there's also a sharp cover of come as you are that remakes kurt

cobain's anguished alternative-rock classic into a plaintive,

acoustic plea for self-acceptance. at their best, love and

indigo girls sidestep trends and go straight to the heart.<p>

shameless promo alert (please disregard if outside of the chicago area):

moon lodge, my music/poetry performance duo, will be featured at cafe aloha
next tuesday the 28th.

the nitty gritty particulars:

moon lodge @ cafe aloha (corner of lincoln and montrose, chicago)
tuesday, march 28th, 9 pm-ish (preceeded by an open mic @ 8pm)
no cover/all ages :)

we'll be doing a short set, but its our first non-open mic performance, so
we're pretty psyched (and would love to have some friendly faces in the
audience!)

for more info (or to get on our mailing list), please e-mail me off the

hi all-
our computer has been down for nearly two weeks and i had just heard about
the eastern kentucky university show before that...i know tickets have gone
on sale...i'm wondering if they're selling them anyplace other than at the
university. did anyone on the list get them via internet or phone? i found
an eku web site, but see no mention of the concert.i am hoping i'm not too
late and that some kind soul with information will help me out...respond
privately of via the list, as others might need the information as well.
thanks so much,
michelle
