***oops...i read the question wrong...i was thinking
"who introduced me to ig" duh i think i need to go to
bed...anyway - it was fun to think back on
it...interesting anyway.***

i really had to think hard on this one - who did
exactly introduce me to ig?  i have to laugh bc it was
my boyfriend - it was in 1989 i was a freshman in
college...he was my first boyfriend/love blah
blah...he played guitar and would "woo" me w his
singing...*teehee* - he made a copy of 'this tape' and
told me it was pretty cool...so i have memories of
walking around campus listening to ctf, prince of
darkness, blood and fire,...etc. - i dug em then - i
*love* them now...actually - i loved em back then
too...*smile*  the funny thing is - he is the *last*
person i would have thought to introduce me to ig...i
transferred colleges and he used to made comments
about the friends i hung out with...we were a group of
women who were very close w each other...we had a lot
of good fun/laughs w each other - drank a lot of beer
and sang a lot of ig - so we just had to be
lesbians...i think he was just scared of his own
sexuality and what it all could mean! anyway - he is
married now w 2 kids...

so yeah - i read the question wrong...it'll give me
something else to think about...lol.  :o)

nighty night,
sunny - who feels grateful to 'that boy' that
introduced her to ig but oh so happy not to be the one
he married!

i first saw angelina jolie in her portayal of 'legs' in the movie
'foxfire' - quite an interesting character - similar in intensity to gia -
both movies are personal favorites....

love the scene when gia's male friend asked her if she ever had sex w/ a man
and she answers 'once - i could have done that w/ a german shepherd' - does
that answer your question?  ;)

peace,
tim

"who is the person or group of people that you have introduced to the indigo
girls who you thought would not go for them but have become fans.....perhaps
even more so than yourself......"

i introduced my best friend to the girls.  i had a major crush on him at the
time (we were just ...welll...not quite best friends at the time)--so, i lent
him the cd's (you know...if you lend someone something--they have to see you
again to return it!)--we spent loads of time together that summer--it was the
summer we became best friends.  we would walk down the streets of downtown
charleston (sc) and sing indigo girls.  in fact, we still love to do that.
of course--crush ended when he came out of the closet.  :-)  irony, irony,
irony, there.

we are closer than ever--and, many of their songs relate to us.  it's lovely.

also, i dragged my "little sister" (no blood relation, therefore the
quotation marks) to a billy joel concert.  she was not into his music--it
wasn't "popular."  she loved the concert--and, made way in her life for other
types of music than the kinds she usually listened to.

it's amazing how music can change people's lives--and, can widen their
perception of what's going on around them.

i was just gonna stay quiet but i can't.  the angelina jolie relationship
with her brother -- i totally understand it.  my brother and i are very
close.  so close in fact that i a mere 25 and with little money was going to
take his kids (an 8 yr old and a set of twins at 5 yrs) into my custody
since he was having a hard time raising them by himself.  and my sister, tho
we don't agree in the political arenas, have become closer over the years.
see i am technically an only child and these are technically my half
siblings, but we never think of each other that way.  my brother helped
raise me for 2 years.  when he moved back into the house when i was 12 and
going through hell at school, he was the only one who really understood why
i ran away from home.  and he was the only one who told me it was ok to
stand up for myself and what i believed in and fight back.  see, i used to
get the crap beaten out of me by peers coz i was different.  i survived it,
but not without emotional scars.  this brings in the ig songs:  "love will
come to you" -- that's my fav.  and "kid fears" - that i can relate to.  and
"love of the common people".  whenever i feel totally frustrated with the
rest of my life i know that my family will be there.

thanks
nan

i have been lurking on this list for some time now,
but times of great joy must lead to de-lurking... some
time ago, the girls were being considered for our
spring concert here at marywood.  sadly, money didn't
work out, and the concert was cancelled altogether.
then, one of the local theatres and marywood (the
university i attend) struck up a deal to put the show
on in a joint venture!!  so, when you check the ig
website and see the scranton cultural center, that's
us!!  i thought that y'all might like to have some
info on this show, since scranton isn't the most
well-known of cities...
the information that exists now is that tickets will
be first available to the students and staff here at
mu and then will be offered to the public through the
cultural center beginning on april 1st for $30.  the
phone number for the box office is (570) 346-7369.  if
anyone wants any more information such as food or
lodging, feel free to post or contact me.
regrettably, i cannot organize a listmeet because i
will be busy, as i am on a committee that will be
working backstage (*grin*).
can i get a woo hoo!?!
love and light,
dev;)

not sure if this is really answering the question...but...
it'll 'out' me as being one of those shaming of the sun-newbie types.  yes, i
didn't start listening to them until the fall of 1997.
and, to be honest....i heard a certain rumor about them...and saw a picture
of them...and was like, wow, these girls are gay, *i* might be gay...i should
buy the cd.  i wasn't totally out of the folk-indie scene..oh, ok.  i was.
tupac, pearl jam and outkast were my favorite ear candy makers at the time.
hey, at least it was eclectic.  ha.
anyway, during that crazy fall, i was a senior in h.s., and was thinking
maybe...i could just come out to my parents, and then a few others...and it
would work its way around school.  i wanted people to know...but still needed
more encouragement.
enter "it's alright" and other songs on that album.
i reviewed sots in my school newspaper, hoping someone would come up to me
and say they were fans as well.  didn't happen, but after i put a rainbow pin
on my backpack, and wrote a "people's differences are what makes this country
great" editorial, i did get a friendlier attitude from my stern female p.e.
teacher.  (or maybe i'm just imagining that.  i dunno.)

well, just sharing ....
how ig enriched my life

        hey jill -
i hope you get this on time -
i won't be there (going tomorrow night) but i can house you. the
way to get to bryn mawr is to go to 30th street tation in philly and
change to septa. take the r5 to bryn mawr, ask somebody to point you to
campus (it's a straight shot, 3 blocks, maybe) and call me from the first
yellow phonebox you see. x5802. if i'm not in, go hang out in the campus
center and call me periodically (there's a phonebox right outside) i'll
show up eventually.

so, um. sometimes i post things publicly when i mean them to be
private. hi, everyone.
while i'm here, though, i can answer one of the things we've been
talking about, even if it's not exactly the thread that was intended. in
fact, i'll go ahead and invent a new thread: near-misses with indigo
fandom. did any of y'all bump elbows with the indigo girls sometime way
back when, think to yourself "nah", and move merrily along, never dreaming
what you might be missing?
the summer after my junior year in high school, i went to visit a
dear friend and former teacher of mine, who had moved out to georgia after
my freshman year. (four years in atlanta and she's *still* never seen the
girls even once! aaah!) it was a terribly loaded thing, this visit, and it
ended up being very painful for me, so i admit i wasn't really paying
attention when she put in a cassette tape of music she thought i'd like. i
listened politely for a bit, but the only time i paid attention was when i
picked out michael stipe's backing vocals on kf (i was already a big rem
fan at the time). about a year later (summer of '96) i came into the girls
on my own, and i've been kicking myself ever since for losing that first
year....
the really ironic thing about all this is that this friend of mine
mostly listens to smashmouth and third eye blind and gets all wiggy when i
talk about ig being "folk"... sort of like my reaction when she refers to
them as "pop". heh.
so how about everyone else? any unappreciated close encounters of
the indio kind from your pre-fandom past?

i don't know if this was a near miss or not.  i became a fan in '94.
looking back i now realize that they played alot in small clubs in
chapel hill when i was there in college.  they were in college in emory
(since we're the same age).  i wish i knew enough back then to have seen
them.  it would have been fun to see them before they were famous and
then now.  oh well, i missed a lot of things in college (girls, for
instance, i was a late bloomer).

hi all,
i just wanted to say a bunch of things.
1) if anybody in the baltimore area wants a copy of 4.5, they're selling it
for $18 at soundgarden,  in fells point. that's not too bad - cheapest i've
seen it was $18 canadian at sam the music man in toronto, though i think
others have seen it cheaper. just if you're looking. and just to head off
questions, i can't afford to buy it for anyone right now, and 4.5 is an
import best-of-indigo-girls type cd that came out a few years ago.

2)apparently us, the entertainment monthly, has decided to become an
entertainment weekly. the washington post was making fun of this fact, and
decrying the fact that they were already giving such important information
as an update on indigo girl amy ray's cysts.  they weren't into hearing
about cysts, or about getting that particular magazine 4 times as often.
also, the advocate online has a new article about the glama nominations, and
highlights ig because of the number of nominations they recieved.

3)my apologies to anybody who doesn't want to hear about my new cd - i will
try not to mention it again. that said, i am mentioning it now. if anybody
wants to hear more about it, e-mail me and i'll put you on the mailing list.
if you don't, have no fear, and delete now. so: my cd, "charmed", produced
by sonia of disappear fear, is due out april 4 - this coming tuesday. it
features 11 of my songs and one phil ochs song. there are folk tunes, rock
tunes, and even techno-klezmer (i wrote it - i can describe it as i want).
if you are not in baltimore, you can get it on amazon, or directly from me,
or numerous other ways, though most of them are not in place just yet.  i am
touring all over the east coast  these days, so you can always get it at a
show.
*if you are in baltimore, come to the cd release show! it is tuesday, april
4, 8 pm, at buddies pub, 313 north charles at saratoga, (410) 332-4200.
sonia will be there, and i'll have a great band, and i'm more excited than
words can convey.*

rage, indigo girls may show at rally for mumia
abu-jamal
organizers of the may 7 event in new york say both
bands have pledged their support.

rock-rappers rage against the machine and folk-rockers
the indigo girls are lending their support to a may 7
rally in new york for death-row inmate mumia abu-jamal
and may appear at the event, according to organizers.

the event, a day for mumia, is scheduled to take place
in the theater at madison square garden. rage and the
indigo girls, who have both publicly supported
abu-jamal in the past, are "lending their name to the
event to help us get others," organizer monica
moorehead said.

both acts have other commitments may 7 but are
attempting to alter their schedules so they can
participate in the rally, moorehead said.

a spokesperson for epic records was unable to confirm
the bands' endorsement of the event but said that it
wouldn't be surprising, given both groups' history of
support for abu-jamal...

first in 92 i remember that i had a mix tape which had
galileo on it.  i liked the song but i had no idea who
it was. then my last year at camp, which was in 95, my
whole bunk were indigo girl fanatics.  it's kind of
funny too because their all from ny or somewhere up
there.  i don't know, i just think that they would
have been more popular down here since they're from
here.  ok, that was just a stupid thought.  anyways,
they would always play them and i would be like, "guys
come on.  turn that crap off."  i was going through
some punk stage.  anyways, by then end of the summer i
found myself daydreaming about women listening to
romeo and juliet.  that was during my "i'm differnt, i
don't know why but i am going to figure it out stage."
daydreaming about women kind of gave it away though.
well, if you've made it this far sorry for the
rambling.  anyways, after camp i didn't really listen
to them much.   mostly just romeo and juliet. then in
97 i became what i am today. a complete fanatic.  so
almost 5 years wasted of good fan time i could have
had.  oh well, watcha gonna do.
take care,

hey y'all -
during the summer of 1991 i attended the university of san diego to obtain
my paralegal certification (not that i ever did anything with it.... but
that's another story).   sight unseen, i made arrangements on the advice of
the admissions office to rent one of two available bedrooms in the home of
a previous graduate of the program.  during the course of the summer, i
became friends with both the other renter (another paralegal student from
new mexico) and the owner of the home.  the other student, havens, heard
that ig was coming to sd state and did i want to go?  at the time, i had
heard ctf on the radio - but nothing else by them - and money being tight,
i passed but the homeowner said sure so havens bought both of them tickets.
turns out that on the day of the concert, the homeowner (i cannot remember
her name, for the life of me!) did not feel good, so she offered her ticket
to me at half price - and i went with about 4 other women, all of whom knew
about the indigo girls and were really excited.

i can still remember that evening in san diego - late june - sun setting
behind the amphitheatre - beautiful evening....  the ellen james society
opened, and being a garp fan, i was getting into them.  but then amy and
emily came out and started into hammer and a nail and i was hooked......  i
can't remember a whole bunch more about the setlist (i'm sure i could check
on lifeblood...just did, and there is no setlist for the show) except for
when amy introduced on of their new songs from nomads, indians, saints
called welcome me.  it was absolutely incredible.  actually, i do remember
something else - it was the last show of that particular concert tour, and
both of them were in fine spirits.....  one of the fans yelled to emily
"how'd you shoot today"  and emily answered something like "fifty over"....
it took me a few moments to figure out that she was referring to golf....
after the concert, we all went out for drinks and had a wonderful time.
the next morning i went out and bought nomads, back on the bus y'all,
strange fire and indigo girls.  to this day, whenever i hear welcome me i
flash back to that summer and driving down friars parkway in my well used
mazda glc, sunroof open, and singing at the top of my lungs.

so, almost ten years (&  about 15 concerts) later, i would like to thank
both havens (who i have not heard from since that summer) for buying the
tickets, and the woman from whom we rented rooms (i wish i could remember
her friggin' name!) for getting sick so that i could discover the joy, fun,
friendship and comradery that comes from being an indigo girls fan.

when i was 13, my sister gave me a mixed tape that had closer to fine on
it.  i liked the song, but didn't pursue hearing anything else of there's.
a year later she gave me a tape that had both closer to fine and blood and
fire on it.  again, i liked the songs, but it still took me another year
before i actually listened to the whole album.  that's when i finally
became a fan, two years after my first ig exposure.  :)

hi all....
i just wanted to share a small ig moment with you and hope that you find the humor in it, as well.
i am an avid nhl hockey fan, particularly a detroit red wing fan since i was born and raised in the suburbs of detroit.
about 2 years ago i was blessed with the chance to finally see "my boys" live -- i was able to be at an actual game for the first time.  they play a lot of live music during dead times in the game such as timeouts, penalties, dead plays, etc.  well, the opposing team got called for a penalty and before i knew it, the chorus of "shame on you" was being played over and over again throughout the arena.  besides being completely hillarious for the situation in which it was being played, it was great to hear "my girls" singing while i was watching "my boys."  what a perfect moment.
and tonight, as i sit here listening to the game over the internet since i am now doing grad studies in georgia, i hear the song being played in the background again.
there is nothing better than a touch of home.  thanks for listening....

i was born in pontiac. lived in birmingham and troy mostly. my dad used to
take me to red wings games when i was a kid.  pine knob was the place for
concerts, and joe louis arena and the silverdome for bigger shows.
that is a good story, thank you.

as a newcomer to this list, i expected to find an open-minded forum about
music, politics, and the like, considering the fan base of the indigo girls.
it seems, however, that the judgement often runneth over (i.e. angelina
jolie, melissa etheridge, etc.)  i have learned that many of us who could be
some of the most accepting, forgiving, and open-minded people in the world
are also some of the most narrow-minded.  we often rush to judgement and
point the finger when high-profile celebrities don't behave as we think they
should.  it seems many of us are even less forgiving to the out celebs that
don't fit our ideals.  we should be amoung the last to judge the choices of
others that have no effect on our lives whatsoever.

mle's involvement with an organization such as hrc has no impact on me
whatsoever? uh, ok if thats what you believe but she draws people to support
an organization that is trans-phobic, supports anti-choice and anti-woman
candidates and decides to call a march behind closed doors with 5 people
from 3 organizations present for money. that doesn't somehow affect you?

that at one time she supported peta, an organization that would take away
the ability to test aids vaccines and cures? and this has no effect in our
lives? (disclaimer: i am well aware she withdrew her support of peta because
of their stance on animal testing).

i believe that we try to be open-minded enough to realize we are not some
sort of homogenous glob, that there is room for everyone. but i'm beginning
to wonder about that assumption lately.

out celebs have a high level of exposure (hence the term "celebrity") and as
such, carry a high level of responsibility, like it or not. last i checked,
it wasn't a rule in the how to be a human handbook that we like what
everyone else likes.

ryan,

could you tell me how many times has the hrc supported anti-choice and
anti-woman candidates and who were they?  i guess one is al d'amato from ny?
also would you happen to know what percentage of transgendered people are
gay, lesbian or bi?  is it more than the average 10%?  i have a tg
friend(ftm) and he is straight and he doesnt feel like the hrc should speak
for him because he is heterosexual.  is hrc transphobic because they don't
include tg people in their mission statement or is there something more
specific they have done?

ryan, i appreciate your opinions and repsect your right to voice them.  i
suppose i am not as educated as you on the hrc and their policies and
missions.  however, i have not directly seen any effects that the hrc as had
on my life.  again, i realize that maybe i just am not aware of them and that
is my own fault.  i do know that groups like peta and hrc support a variety
of causes.  it is ok for an individual to support one of their causes and not
others.  i am against the use animals for fur, but as i scientist i know that
they are invaluable in the development of medicine and vaccines to treat
human diseases.  sometimes, we have to chose our battles.  as far as the
people that are drawn to support these groups blindly on the coattails of
celebrities, those are their own mistakes.
i agree that celebs and public figures do carry responsibility with the
public for their actions.  as for me, i do not know her motivations for
endorsing certain groups.  whatever they are,  i still enjoy her music and
think her to be a wonderful artist.  i certainly do not believe that we
should be a homogenous glob that supports everything and accepts everyone.  i
just cannot make myself become so overwhelmed and preoccupied with the
choices and mistakes that people in the public eye have made that i cease to
enjoy their talents.  i would hate to know that people judged me because i
was once an anti-abortion, close-minded, right-wing conservative.

as per sonicnet news

rage, indigo girls may show at rally for mumia abu-jamal

staff writer brian hiatt reports

rock-rappers rage against the machine and folk-rockers the indigo girls are
lending
their support to a may 7 rally in new york for death-row inmate mumia abu-jamal
and
may appear at the event, according to organizers.

the event, a day for mumia, is scheduled to take place in the theater at
madison square
garden. rage and the indigo girls, who have both publicly supported abu-jamal
in the
past, are "lending their name to the event to help us get others," organizer
monica
moorehead said.

both acts have other commitments may 7 but are attempting to alter their
schedules so they can participate in the rally,
moorehead said.

a spokesperson for epic records was unable to confirm the bands' endorsement of
the event but said that it wouldn't be
surprising, given both groups' history of support for abu-jamal.

abu-jamal, a journalist, has been on death row in waynesburg, pa., since he was
convicted of the dec. 9, 1981, murder of
philadelphia police officer daniel faulkner. abu-jamal has proclaimed his
innocence all along, and his supporters claim he
was set up because of his work as a political commentator and his involvement
with the black panther party, a black-activist
organization.

abu-jamal supporters say faulkner's real killer escaped on the night of the
shooting and that evidence that would have
exonerated abu-jamal was withheld during his trial.

rage, who played a controversial benefit concert for abu-jamal in new jersey
last year, mention the case on their single
"guerilla radio" (realaudio excerpt), from their latest album, the battle of
los angeles (1999).

fare thee well my bright star(s)

i had a teacher in highschool 1993/94 who was from the states, and when she
left she gave me a really poor guality tape that had half of ig self titled
album on it.
i remeber listening to it quite a bit and being taken by emily's voice -
which is exeptionally low on that album, and amy's tried to be true, which i
liked to blast on my car stereo.

then came a period of 3 years when i totally forgot they excisted, until the
summer of 97 when a friend, (she used to be on this list - carolyn turrett -
thank you wherever you might be right now:) at a summer camp reintroduced me
to them, and there was no going back for me...

as for recruiting new ig fans - i havent been too successful on that front.
a lot of my friends like them (which is good considering hardly anyone knows
them here), but there doesn't seem to be any potential serious ig heads
around.

yes! i remember watching a few red wing playoff games 2 years ago and
hearing the soy chorus. what a great feeling! since i'm an avid sabres
fan, i still hold out hope that they'll adopt the anthem. unfortunately,
the music selector seems to be stuck in the age of reo speedwagon and
ac/dc. (no offense intended towards fans of either band)

so, the hrc shouldn't speak for transgendered people if the numbers are small?

that's his choice . . . .as someone living as hetero, he probably feels that he
doesn't need anyone to look out for his rights, because their are no
discriminatory laws or policies against heterosexuals (of which i am aware), but
what about those who need this protection?

yes it seems that soy is an anthem of sorts for the sport. i was in tulsa and heard it several times as well as here at a coyotes game....my favorite memory was at a tulsa game with mariah ( then 3 yrs old) and they began to play gotm...she started singing along and said....mom....am and em.....too funny...she still loves em and recognizes most songs by first few chords...

finger lengths may point
to sexual orientation
the index fingers of lesbians tend to be
much shorter than their ring fingers,
whereas on straight women, the fingers
are usually the same length, according to
a new study. (photodisc)

                 by shawna vogel

                 b o s t o n, march 29 - take a look at your right
hand. is your ring finger longer than your index
finger? a group of scientists says these finger
lengths may provide a hint as to whether you're
gay. and this finding, they say, adds to the
growing body of evidence that biology at least

it has been my experience over the years on this list that oppinions contrary to the majority are not appreciated.  they are several listees however that do appreciate a good exchange of ideas and debate.  too many, however, do not.  this is true across all topices, ig related (songs, concert experiences, lyrics etc.,) or not.

i got two more boots (9:30 club) from tara last week and have been meaning to
let y'all know what an awesome job she did on these!  the artwork alone (i
think it was a $1 - woohoo) is worth getting these in your collection.

tara - thanks for all the time and effort involved in making these for us.  i
have a burner and know how long it takes to burn just one cd...then throw in
printing up (not to mention designing) the artwork...that's a lot of work.
thanks again - you're awesome!

perhaps i do not completely agree with the specifics, but these words should
be heard by everyone...

"sometimes i ask to sneak a closer look
skip to the final chapter of the book
and then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took
to get us where we are this far.
but the question drowns in its futility
even i have got to laugh at me
no one gets to miss the storm of what will be
just holding on for the ride."

whether one supports or opposes this view is irrelevant.  what is relevant is
the list policy not to post such things here.  when you have anything of this

i think the mumia people are a little too fast to put out the good news.
considering the girls are travelling from florida to do the nashville show
on may 7, it's highly unlikely that they'll make a live appearance in ny
that same day. the only thing i could think of would be a live televised
appearance via satellite. not exactly the same thing as being "at the
rally."

i personally want to thank whoever sent this across the list.  what an amazing article to read and i feel fortunate that i was able read such a wonderful speech and share in this man's thoughts.
whether you agree or dissagree to mr. scott's words, we still should feel fortunate enough to have the opportunity to share in another person's expressions through the use of technology.
this list is a forum for sharing and expressing.  there will never be a time when everyone agrees with what was posted.  if you don't agree, simply delete.  i don't think anyone tied you to your computer and made you read the whole thing.

hmmmm.  my right hand's index & ring fingers are the same length, while my

too funny.

does this remind anyone else of the medieval method of determining werewolves

members of this list.  i simply stated that the way it was posted was not the
appropriate way to do so.

<<if you don't agree, simply delete.  i don't think anyone tied you to your

i will also take this opportunity to remind those that read this that the
reason for the policy to not forward things in their entirity to the list is
for those people who are subscribed to the digest format.  they cannot
delete.  they must scroll thru lengthy forwards.

i'm glad you gained something positive from reading it, but my post was to
remind listees not to forward everything they feel others should read.  the
way to do it is simple.  post a summary and invite those interested to email
you privately for more info.

oh sure, it seems funny. til you've got villagers running after you with torches
trying to grab your feet and you're itching all over and you can't quite remember

where you were on the last night of the full moon.

i don't know if my girlfriend's a werewolf, but i can rest secure in the knowlege

hkf's,

two new summer dates i saw on pollstar:
06/17/00  clarkston, mi  pine knob music theatre
06/19/00  interlochen, mi  interlochen center

plus i updated the asheville info. as well as indicating the colby show is
open to the public and on sale thru bull moose music stores.  please see my
site for the updates and let us know if you have any more info.  thanks!

ps: tracy chapman - great show last night at the tabernacle in atl.  not as
good as some other shows i've seen there (achemm, saliers & ray) - but a
pretty fun show w/ lots of energy from the crowd, even for a pretty mellow
show.  tracy's b-day is today!  so we were all cheering for her and making
her embarassed, kind-of.  she couldn't get a word in it was sometimes so
loud w/ cheering...  pretty funny stuff lemme tell ya.

we ought to be careful about putting too much stock into all this. this is an excerpt from the age, in melbourne, australia, which seems to draw the opposite conclusion, if i'm reading this correctly. didn't the abc thing say you're gay if they are not the same length?

the forefinger on the right hand can indicate
whether a person is homosexual, lesbian or heterosexual, according to a
study published in today's issue of nature, the british science weekly.
researchers at the university of california at berkeley say the relative
lengths of the forefinger and the fourth finger can provide a pointer to
sexual orientation. the more alike the length, the higher the likelihood of
being gay.

i know that this can be used to prove genetics, but on the other hand, it
can be used to prove genetics (and the possibility of modifications to
genetic patterns),
i am not by nature paranoid about this stuff, but i still have severe doubts
about how this kind of information gets funded/used.  ya know there are
enough people out there who would like to be able to identify glbt folk for
a whole nother reason than to simply provide an argument for genetics over
upbringing.

thanks for pointing out the article, heaps interesting.

well i never imagined that racism and other prejudices were going to be a
profile of this list when i first joined either, but of late its just about
all i have had in the way of personal mail from folk on this list.  this has
been my first mailing list where people have been openly racist in private
mail and thought there was nothing wrong with it.  it did start to make me
wonder about just how reactionary some of the members are, not the majority
i hope, but of course have no way of knowing.  the simple truth is that just
cos someone likes the indigo girls doesnt mean that they arent racist or
prejudiced, or that they are lefties.

sorry for the nigc, but i am working on a school paper, and wanted to ask my
friends (you!) for some help!  my paper is on television and how far
networks will go to get you to watch, and how far is too far.
if you would like to help, please email me privately with your favorite tv
shows and why you watch.  i need some info about why you watch it, ie:
character appeal, symapthy for character, situations, humor, drama,
educational, creative plot, action, etc...
with television being such a vast medium, going into millions of homes world
wide, many people don't realize that it is an intimite medium as well.  your
life has somehow been touched or changed by something you have seen on
television.  let me know your thoughts on tv and it's role in society!
thanks for your time

partner, i should say- and i sat through this concert of someone called
the indigo girls.  i enjoyed myself, but mostly i watched the gay guys
dancing in the audience. hee hee.  a couple of years later, when i started
to love ig, i realized that i had gone to my first concert before i even
knew who they were.  i kicked myself a few times, of course.  and now, lo

experience.  and i promise that this time, i will not be watching the gay
guys dance.

yippeee!!  i am so excited i can barely contain myself.

i thought  i was the only one that hears noises in that song
i 'm hearing  like two light knocks (kinda like a bongo drum) during
the pause after one of the chorus bits (i think it's the one just before
the bridge) and it freaked me out one day because i thought my car was
knocking, or maybe i ran over something. i couldn't figure it out up

catches me off guard sometimes.

i seem to recall when i had a copy of the ppv concert that was broadcast
that *someone* in the indigo girls had an acoustic amp? acoustic amps can
almost always be identified cos they have a sort of poo-brown casing (i
don't know if that is the technical colour of the casing, but you know what
i mean).  can anyone confirm or deny?  i had a feeling it was a crate, but
it could have been one of those erky fender acoustic amps (which sound yummy
but mess up all the time).  if anyone can confirm the brown-ness that would

i recall it had something to do with earaches. perhaps lesbians had more
inner ear infections or that the inner ear canal is shaped differently
(more horizontal than vertical.)

ok making this up as i go along, like all good scientific data gathering:

both left and right ring fingers being longer than your index finger makes
you a lesbian.

both left and right ring fingers being shorter than your index finger makes
you entirely heterosexual with no hope of a change of teams.

right hand ring finger being shorter than index finger makes you at least
five inches shorter than the girl you appeared next to in your fifth class
school photo.  left hand ring finger being shorter than index finger means
you will grow old not really knowing whether the indigo girls ever did feel
the need to replace the line 'leave the figuring to those we meet on the way
out of town' to 'give the finger to those we meet on the way out of town' at
any of their myriad of concerts.

i hope that has cleared up any sexual/digital confusion that anyone has had
over this ethically sound and medically provable theory of the fingers.

sandy (i am a doctor of something and yet again i prove that it clearly
isn't medicine).

ok, are we supposed to take this finger length thing seriously?  because to
me it all seems like some sort of a joke.  people have this incredible need
to explain everything that they can't or won't understand.  for instance, my
mother, who has tried so very hard to deal with my coming out to her for four
years, doesn't understand butch lesbians.  i, myself, personally, am a huge
fan of lea delaria's and my mother always looks at her, when i'm watching her
on tv or when i happen to have a picture of her, and asks me questions like,
"why don't women just date men if they're going to date women who look like
men?" or "i don't get it.  i mean, she's very ugly, lori."  and no matter how
many times i sit down and have an open, honest discussion (oh joy) about it
with her, she refuses to understand it.  i have come to realize that it all
goes back to this: sometimes you don't need to understand something fully in
order to accept it and to be okay with it.

this all goes back to the finger length thing.  it truly angers me that
people are sitting there doing massive studies on the finger length of people
in relation to their sexualities when aids and cancer still don't have cures
and there are starving, homeless people out there.  if they want to do
something to help the glbt community, then instead of looking at people's
finger sizes, help out the kids who come out to their parents everyday and
then have nowhere to live, no one to turn to, and not a single positive adult
rolemodel in the world.  that is why this finger length thing really annoys
me.

   yep!
but shame on you is far worse -- it seems that 90% of my time gets

i agree with ya lori, its one of the reasons that we need to highlight just
how lame it is, just how tricky it is to engage in this kind of deductive
approach to sexuality (which is why the 'gay' gene pisses me off).  i don't
think anyone (even the guy from ucla who commented on it) thinks we should
take it seriously. the only serious aspect is that anyone would think this
has merit, or can be used to determine something that is far more amorphous
than can be written down in a wee dissertation.

i know cathy, i'm having the same problem. according
to my fingers (which are pretty much the same length)
i'm straight or something. which is so not true. this
is silly.

on the other hand this is good for arguing with the
people who think that homosexuality is a choice and/or
a behavior. physiological differences always help in
arguments such as these. esp me with that

hi all. sorry for the nigc but i just have a quick question. wonderin if
anyone lives in the raleigh/durham/chapel hill are of nc that has access
(and now how) for recording a cd? my best friend is in incredible
singer/songwriter and wants to put a cd together for distrubution (hopefully
to deamon records!) but she does not have the equipment and cannot afford to
go to a studio. she has an old demo she got to record for free but only cuz
the guy i contacted happen to have a son that was crazy mad about the
university of north carolina lady tar heels b-ball team (of which she was
on) and as long as she gave him an autographed copy of what ended up being
the national champs media guide for that year she wouldnt have to pay for
the recording.  it was decent but its old and not worthy of distrabution.
she is out of school now and doesnt have that status anymore so she wont be
gettin anything for free now!! if this is relevant to anyone here, please
please please please email me privately!!!! thank you so much!!

hey luscious jackson fans,

i just ran across this on the internet.....that really stinks!

luscious jackson calls it a day?

                     march 30, 2000, 12:10 pm pt

after four albums of raucous, street-savvy
electronic-influenced hip-hop, luscious jackson has
decided to call it a day, according to a source close
to the band. capitol/grand royal records released what
is now the group's curtain call, electric honey, in
1999.   there was no word where vocalist/bassist jill
cunniff, vocalist/guitarist gabby glaser, and drummer
kate shellenbach will go from here, as the band's pr
firm, nasty little man, as well as a spokesperson for
the band at atlas/third rail, the band's management
company, had no comment at press time.

luscious jackson emerged from the same early-'80s new
york scene that spawned the beastie boys (shellenbach
was a drummer in an early b-boys hardcore lineup) and
caught the attention of the underground on their 1992
debut ep, in search of manny, on the beastie boy's
grand royal imprint. the group garnered critical
praise
for their 1993 debut, natural ingredients, for their
spastic ménage of street-wise hip-hop, underground
electronic beats, and savvy, alt-rock and pop guitars
and vocals. fever in fever out followed in 1996,
featuring the minor hit "naked eye." in 1998,
keyboardist vivian trimble left the group to pursue
other projects, narrowing the lineup to a trio for
last year's electronic honey.

in related news, atlantic records will release the
self-titled debut from trimble's new project, dusty
trails, on may 9. dusty trails also includes
ex-breeders bassist josephine wiggs, and also features
some help from trimble's ex-bandmates. cunniff
sings and co-wrote one track, "roll the dice," and
shellenbach helps out on drums here and there
throughout the record.
