after checking out this site, i decided that creating
a new compilation would be a duplication efforts.  if
you're not listed on the site, email indigofrk@aol.com
and she'll add you.

http://members.aol.com/sfried1977/igtapes.html

and check out the page, it's awesome.

my new laptop equipped with a cd burner arrives this
week, and i'm looking forward to trading cd boots in
the near future.  if there's interest, perhaps we
could start a boot page strictly devoted to cdr
trading?

i'm glad that ig got on that recording, but does
anyone know why they cut scooter boys    it seems like amy was just
getting started when  they cut  her off right straight at the end! i
would love to hear the whole thing .or at least know what she sang

you know? something like  "i said  'hey blue blood you're nothing new,
ya see i've come,
i've come.". then they fade out as she starts
telling her story'   that's too bad.  ig was the
only reason i attended the first lilith fair, and bought the ensuing
recording

when amy goes off into the wild blue yonder
she takes me with her!  :-)       :-)

i agree, it was a great show, especially if you stood around for the
incredibly dull tracy whats-her-name before hand...apologies to anyone out
there who thinks she's great but after the first couple of songs it all
started sounding exactly the same...no energy, no spunk, no nothing...she
had twice as many people on stage than the girls yet when a&e started the
entire place become electrified from their presence...what a change!it was
incredible!
in addition to the songs listed above...i think they also played kid fears,
and power of two...which emily prefaced by saying approximately the
following:
"the next song is a ballard...that you can get married to...so if anyone out
there needs to propose...do it now..."
:d
also, somebody up front kept holding up a map...so they played get out the
map!:d

warning:...mini rant ahead...proceed at your own risk
most of the people there were kewl...probably cuz the entire ohio lesbina
contingency was there...*bg*...but there were lots of 'other' folks there
that for the life of me i can't figure out why!...case in point...to my
right, a group of folks that talked through the entire show!*argh!*...half
of whom didn't even turn around the face the stage...what the
hell?!?!...another example: numerous people, with their friends, would come
pushing through, then stop right in front of us ooking for some sort of
space they could continue to...some would then keep pushing though the crowd
looking for that non-exist space...and all their friends (i counted 8 one
time) trailed along behind apologizing profusely...this happened a number of
times until finally a couple came barging through and stopped right in front
of my grrlfriend.  both were about 6 feet tall (my grrlfriend is 5'4)...i
told him that he needed to keep going forward or go back but that he
couldn't just stop there and block people...he said he could because it was
a general admission show (what?!)...i said he did not have the right to push
us out of the way when we had been standing there for over an hour before
the concert started so that we could have a good view...he looked at me and
said, why not?...(argh!!!)...i said cuz that's fucked up man, and you're a
prick for doing it, so move along before we move you ourselves...(by this
time there were about 6 of us who had had it with this guy...and all the
other folks that had done the same thing for the past 30 minutes while
ruining the show...i won't even tell you about the very drunk 6'5 guy and
his very embarressed 6 friends)...so he looks at me, at the other people
around me who are telling to get the hell out of there...and decides to piss
off other people...and pushes his way even farther
forward...unbelieveable...at least his girlfriend had the decency to be
embarressed...
half of these groups that pushed their way through didn't even stay for the
whole concert...they didn't even know who the ig were!...so after getting
pushed and stepped on at the begining...we had to endure the same thang as
they all left half way through...
at least the last half of the concert was good...
sorry for the rant and the language...but rude people really piss me off...

i would guess its their next albumn, which emily said was gonna be mostly
acoustic! amy actually wanted this album to more folky/ acoustic like first
few but then they ran into lilith fair and the awsome band, and everything
changed!! im glad this albumn turned out the way it did!! :) i love it!!
this album is amazing musically and lyrically!! of course, arent they
all!!:) anway, i cant wait for the all acoustic one!! whhhheeeeeeewwwwwww!!!
that will be a treat!! :)i hope they record it w/ the "live" sound!! i dont
know the name for it, but i know what i mean!! :) have a great day all!!

my guess it'll be a live album, perhaps connected with their denver
concert video which is being released soon.

usually, if they're doing a new album, they spend some time after the
tour they do for the current album, spend some time writing songs, and
then go on tour and play new material in front of the audience, refine
it there, and then head into the studio to record.  i have a hard time
believing they're actually releasing another studio album, with their
tour being booked clear into july already, and only being half over at
that point...

perhaps it's just a vicious rumor, and there's nothing coming out by
them in october, after all!

i don't know i was kind of shocked on hearing the new album,  i prefer
accoustic music to most rock, i made many acceptions for nanci griffith
and ig,  so i can adapt . i tried really
hard to like  "go"  but i heard it as problem
child on 1200 curfews which was great the way it was.  if you have a
good thing going why
change it?

now that doesn't mean i hate the album,  far from it,  i like sister,
ozillene,  trouble,  but
it was quite a stretch  for me.   they're harmonies are what i like best
about them,
and they coverred most of it  up, so you know it's there but  you can't
hear what they're singing.  so i agree when listees say that  it
was overproduced.

hey y'all,
the gainesville show this thurs. may 18th is now happening
at brick city music hall. there was a little mix up with
the florida theatre so we moved the show..
brick city is right across the street, so it's really no
big deal.
it is at 238 w. university
doors are still at 9:30 and
justin hale, 3fc, terri and her band and amy will still
all be there.
so, spread the word.
oh yeah, it's still five bucks!

indigo girls to open
     summer tour in june

     amy ray's independent label celebrates
     10th birthday.

     by rob evans
     livedaily senior writer

indigo girls amy ray and emily saliers, who recently concluded an acoustic
tour of small
venues, will take to the road this summer with a full band. they continue
to support their
album "come on now social," which was released last september.

the summer tour, which opens in atlanta on june 2, will
visit
a mix of amphitheaters and large clubs, and dates have
                     been confirmed through july.

amy ray had an emergency appendectomy in late february, and doctors
discovered and
removed an ovarian cyst during the surgery. her recovery forced the
cancellation of a
planned march tour of australia, but the duo was back on the road a month
later.

beginning later this month, ray will host a tour of bands signed to her
independent label,
daemon records, in celebration of the label's 10th anniversary. details
about the tour are
available on the official indigo girls website.

[note: the following tour itinerary has been provided by artist and/or
tour sources, who verify its
accuracy as of 05/12/2000. changes may occur before tickets go on sale.
check with official artist
web sites, ticketing sources and venues for late updates.]

i was wondering if any atlanta listees have heard of a singer-songwriter
named sue witty. she used to live in virginia, then moved to raleigh-durham,
and now lives in atlanta. i have to say that i liked the first performance i
saw a couple of years ago, but she played a local outdoor art festival here
in va this past weekend and i didn't feel the same draw to her music as
before. i'm wondering if she has made a name for herself there. so have any
of you heard of her? if so, what do you think? was she just having a bad day
saturday (it was seriously hot, like 96)?

thanks,
robbin

hey everyone!!!! i was at jammin on main. wooooo, what a show. i was the
chick wearing a powder blue cowboy hat, if anybody saw me!!!  eventually we
passed the hat up to the stage, and amy wore it during galileo. oh, the
thrill!!!!!!!!  it totally matched her light blue shirt.  aahhhhh! romeo and
juliet was luscious, and kid fears, wow.  yeah. the only negative aspect of
this show was the angry woman standing next to me.  out of necessity i ended
up jostling her quite a bit while dancing. she kept muttering that i was a
twelve year old. man.  so much animosity!  i really enjoyed the rest of the
crowd though. . . being packed like sardines really creates a sense of
camraderie!

love,
emily

hey all! goin to san fran tomorrow!!! weeehhhheeewww!!! ya know, i was
thinking about this past albumn and how amazing it really is! i know many
have various views on this album and i thought id share mine i wrote online
at amazon! have a great day everyone!! gotta love the girls ey?

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful:

the girls do it yet again!

reviewer: cara klein (cowsrule52@hotmail.com) from chapel hill, nc
i could easily write pages and pages about how
much i love the indigo girls. they never cease to amaze me. this album shows
just how truly talented and secure amy and emily are
as musicians. come on now social is a  masterpiece that delivers one
powerful tune afer another. the girls explored  all of their god given
talents and expanded their musical efforts without ever loosing their
signature trade marks. every one of these songs has intracantly woven layers
of meaning and music that keep me tuned in again and again. although some
may say that this disc is "not true to form," i say it would be a shame to
keep these two women trapped in a box of what we think there realm of music
should be. no matter how diverse the songs are, each track has the subtle
and beautiful qualities that make them
distinctivly indigo. the willigness to continously grow and progress is what
makes these two so special. through banjos and mandilons, gut wrenching
elctric guitar riffs, haunting additions of the accordian and cello and a
beefed up percussion section, their harmonies are never lost. the girls will
always come back to their roots of acoustical majic, but never bound by
them. come on now social is a perfectly balanced, thought provoking, hard
hitting, fun loving combination of musical genious and raw honesty.

well, several months ago i got accused of trying to collect another toaster ( i wasn't really)

but now it has happened. a co-worker who is only 20 and like 8.5 months pregnant has asked if she can get copies of several of my indigo girls cd's so she can have something fun and meaningful to listen to during labor.

seems that she has been paying more attention to the whispers o of the songs that she can hear during the regular day, but at 4:30 i usually crank the volume up a tad!!!!

so, i have yet another convert to the indigo side!!!!( and possibly her child unit as well)

sparkie...who really wants to go home....

she said page - not entire site -

i'm sure people have listening rooms in their house...

jude has a "this is my bootleg collection" room.

(pot calling a kettle black, yup - but hey - i admit it...)

kinda bummed as *i* was supposed to be in dc thursday (going to a
congressional subcomittee hearing) but family issues made me cancel the
trip...

i think you might have a bootleg problem when you cant format your list
because you own so many...

(guilty, as charged!! of the above!)

i've finished up a first draft of my cd-r bootleg page:

http://www.indigirl.com/bootlist_indigo.html

there's also many other bootlegs from other artists there... just fyi.

ok, i know...day late, dollar short...but i was going through a bunch of my
older cds from high school days and, going out on a limb here...quite
different from everyone else's sugguestions for cover songs...what about if
they did a cover of gnr's "sweet child of mine"...i know, it's kind of a
stretch, but em can tear up slash's guitar solo (and she has much better
choices in hats too!) and amy would completely rock on axl's vocals!  give
it another listen and lemme know what you think!

actually play at the shows and add to that...any suggestions?

i would be greatly surprised if the girls would want to cover anything by
such a pig as axl rose.
he's sexist, racist, and homophobic with a history of abusing women.
i actually liked some of the music they did, but after i learned about mr.
rose's proclivities, i find it difficult to stomach.

ok, well, i don't really know much of anything about gnr except that i have
their appetite for destruction cd and i like some of the songs on it...as
for the girls actually *doing* a gnr cover, the likelyhood of that is like
nil.  i know that, but i just think it would be an interesting cover, that's
all.  didn't mean to bring controversy into it...

the only time i have an issue with alcohol is during the infamous
living room jams -- because i'm paying more attention to playing than
watching how much i drink.  of course, once everybody is slightly
inebriated weird things happen.  like taking songs and putting them into
different genres.
and i've heard through some grapevine, that "sweet child o' mine" works
really well as a disco song.  i'll deny it if you tell anybody,
though.

subject:      labels after epic
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

of course any conjecture about what's next is more or less guessing, but
its an interesting question -- where will the girls record after epic?

its possible they could resign with epic.  by all accounts, epic has
allowed them creative freedom and has supported them.  both a&e have had
really credible, positive things to say.  still, epic is very corporate and
at this stage the girls don't need as much promotion as when they were
emerging in  the late 80s.

daemon is an option, but igs have always been about a strong partnership
and balance.  having amy running the label could jepordize that.  a&e have
always been so supportive of each other i can imagine amy reluctant to
bring "indigo girls" into the fold.

there are 100s of indie labels around, but rightous babe records may stand
out for ig.  run by ani with similar political/social/economic viewpoints,
this could be an opportunitity to support an indie label and a friend at
the same time.  still, ig may be too big for rbr and ani could be reluctant
to mix the business and friendship.

personally my guess is rounder.  rounder has been around 30+ years and has
supported many folk artists during the good time and the not so good.  with
their experience and size they could handle the demands of a larger artist.
>from the girls perspective, while rounder isn't indie, the company has long
supported the struggling folk singer.  the money that ig sales generate for
the company could support many new relationships.

any thoughts?

ooh!  discussion :) actually, i would disagree that rounder would win.
they seem to be moving more and more into "traditional" music in that
most of their stable are pretty strictly defined in their categories.
they are also not, in what i've heard, easy to work with.  i dont think
rounder would know what to do with an eclectic band/group like ig. i know
some folks who work there and they are very nice, so it isnt a reflection
on them as much as label movement and philosophy.  i know of some
"strictly" folk groups who have done well on rounder but still have to
fight to get their records released there.  i think the ig machine is
too big for rounder.

ryko seems a possibility in my mind.  home to artists like catie curtis,
it seems to be a bit more flexible with its "definitions".  what about war
records which includes melissa ferrick? righteous babe could still be a
possibility.  or, maybe they go back to their original self-release label
and do it all in house.

i think it also remains possible that they stay with epic, with maybe
a shorter contract.  it's beena good home for them, and i'd bet that
epic has gotten its investment returned nicely. if it aint broke...

it will certainly be intersting to see where the chips fall...

on the basis of their artist roster, i would cast a vote for ryko.
signature sounds might be an interesting possibility given the unique
contract recently signed with richard shindell.  they have an interesting
group of talented artists and are not as locked into established genres as
the rounder group, although i personally have purchased hundreds of cds and
vinyl lps from rounder over the past 20-25 years....

you guys are getting slower up the uptake. don't all rush at once now -
there better be a copy left for me or i'll pout.

http://the-ird.com/coupon.html

beginning may 9th, bring this coupon into any ird store to receive a free
limited edition copy of "the jayhawks - live selections from the columbia

town", both of which are on the new album smile (in-stores now), as well as
"waiting for the sun" from the 1992 album hollywood town hall.

indicated got mailed out to the participants yesterday. boot trees should be
announced soon (i screwed up somewhat so there's a slight change of plan).

so if you're not coming to charlotte, north carolina this sat. for the
daemon records tour, mash delete.  here's the skinny:

this is an exceptionally tiny venue.  amy is hosting the show.  no word on
whether or not she'll play herself or play with others or both (anyone?)
cost is $5 if you're over 21 and $7 if you're under.  begins @ 8 or 8:30.
this venue is soo relaxed. very chilled and every single time i've been
there, i've met the bands and some tres kewl people.  honestly, the outside
is somewhat nasty at times.  don't order any juice mixed drinks..well known
for their rancid taste.  beer is fine.  food, if interested, is delicious
especially if you're a vegetarian.  i'd plan to get there early.

yeah, chickenman is awesome live.  i also wish ozilline was included -
that's my husband's favorite (he tries to deny this because he's a big
rock head and i, of course, love our girls, but i think ig are slowly
creeping their way into bob's heart, because i caught him singing ozilline
in the car -- it was so cute.)

another one that is really emotional during a live show is prince of darkness.
i saw them do that at the accoustic show at colby and i cried.

i like their new stuff and i am glad that they covered so much of it
with this video.  however, it's also interesting that they chose to put
so many songs from sots on the video.  maybe it's because those two
albums don't have any representation on their previous videos?  as far
as "oldoes but goodies" go, i am especially glad to see power of two :)

just seeking a little sympathy and advice.  my situation at work has
gotten progressively worse.  my "coworkers" have now banded against me
and are planning to go to a union steward (i'm a government employee) to
present a case that my mistakes are causing them extra work.  i'm not
sure what the point of this is.  this comes as a surprise to me.  not
one of them has taken the trouble to explain to me exactly what i'm
doing wrong.  it has also taken my supervisor by surprise who now feels
she must have every piece of work i do reviewed in order to prove that i
don't make excessive mistakes.  no one in my department is really
qualified to review my work because i'm the expert.  makes me feel
really good, you know.

hey folks,

here's the creative loafing article which was mentioned
earlier...

-sherlyn

---begin article---
daemon records: beating the odds
tim c. davis / creative loafing, charlotte
5/12/00 4:24:32 pm

maybe you've never heard of daemon records. it's understandable -
some things about them are sort of unheard of in this day and age.
they're a not-for-profit label.they put out a remarkably varied
catalogue of music, from hip hop to trip hop to folk to punk. they
have their artists help out in the office whenever they're in town
(and most of them are - the label is based in atlanta suburb
decatur). they put on free-or-awful-darn-close showcases so local
high school kids can see these acts in a cool club and learn that
there is life outside of mtv and the narrow constraints of the fm
dial. the part of daemon you probably have heard of is amy ray,
one half of the indigo girls and daemon records' founder.

ray formed the label in the summer of 1989, one year after the
indigo girls signed to sony music. one year later, daemon released
its first record, the ellen james society's reluctantly we.

"when me and emily were putting records out, i didn't think about
it," ray says."i just thought about us and our own records. we
were part of a greater scene where everybody put their own records
out. no one had to have a label for everybody else, because
everyone was already doing it.

"but after we got signed, i started looking around and realizing
that there were a lot of friends of mine who hadn't done stuff
that i thought needed to, and i had money. also, it was this need
i had that i didn't want to be divorced from the underground
world. i wanted to keep my foot in that world that i was so used
to."

ray originally was involved in every aspect of the company, from
making phone calls to designing the label.

"i drew the logo myself - the animal head was like this idea of
unfettered freedom, a gut instinct kind of thing.  the human feet
was about being rooted in your community. i was reading this book
called the gift, i think, and it was about art and commerce and
how your daemon was your gift (actually called the gift:
imagination and the erotic life of property, by lewis hyde). and
that's what i wanted the label to be."

most of the acts in the atlanta area do help out all they can,
from licking envelopes to filing papers. what makes a theory or
idea a gift is its presentation to the world at large, and ray
knew from experience that it was essential to be self-sufficient
as a community, much less as individuals or a record label.

"i knew from my own experience with the indigo girls that doing
our own mailing and booking gave us a lot more confidence going
down the path with record labels. it meant we had less of a
chance of getting taken advantage of by the labels because we
had educated ourselves. and i want (our) artists to learn that,
and also want them to feel a certain investment in what they're
doing and understand how much work goes into it. a lot of times
the people in the bands don't realize how much work the people
who work for me are doing. they might complain or whatever, and
i'll ask them to come work for a few hours, so they can see what
goes on. it's for a lot of different reasons. and our bands don't
just do work for their own releases or shows, either. if we have
a big mailing, we might call the guys in justin hale or ph
balance to come over and help out and have a big mailing party,"
she laughs.

ray says her artists come to her from time to time for advice on
a recording project or upcoming show. while happy to help in any
way she can, often they get more than they bargain for.

"sometimes they get mad at me for giving too much advice," she
laughs. "artists will come to me as friends, which a lot of the
people on the label are, like danielle howle, for instance. some
aren't even on my label anymore, but we still work together,
maybe do songwriters' nights and stuff. they come and will ask
me for hints on booking a show, and occasionally i'll call and
try to help out where i can. a lot of times it's just me saying,
'you're not going to get anywhere unless you tour.' that's the
only thing i think i ever say! you've got to go on the road. i
know they get sick of it, but it's the only way to succeed right
now on an indie level is to play. if you're not playing, nothing
i can do will help. i can't do a national radio and retail
campaign that's going to compete with what a major might do for
their artist. i've had bands that did really well at college
radio but didn't sell any records. you have to create a demand,
and a relationship with the music community at large."

you have to have an audience, she continues. "our most successful
bands tour the most. it's just a corollary that's there. whenever
i have a band that's frustrated with me that they're not doing
better, i pull the numbers of the bands that are touring. and
they usually get the point."

forming a diverse not-for-profit label in the midst of an
alternative rock signing frenzy was an inauspicious debut for
daemon, who have now released dozens of records that have found
an eager audience below the radar of popular radio. yet, even as
daemon continues to grow, releasing critically acclaimed acts
from artists like the rockateens, three finger cowboy, and rose
polenzani, ray says her (and the label's) job isn't getting any
easier.

"it's harder now in a lot of ways than it was 10 years ago," she
says. "one way it's easier is with the internet, which is a great
resource. there's a great infrastructure in place, and if you
learn about it, you can do really well.

"but we've had to turn to that more and more because we can't
compete in the classic sense. all the stores are chains now, all
the radio stations are owned by the same people, the clubs, heck,
the promoters are owned by the same people," she laughs. "it's
just unbelievable. when we first started, we had some offers from
companies, and some asked if we wanted to be a subsidiary, and i
pretty much said that i wasn't interested. now it's obvious who we
are as a label, and i think i'm so eclectic and not interested in
numbers that i don't think i'm very attractive to a major or
somebody wanting to merge.

"there's a lot of labels that function this way, where people come
in and help out and everybody does what they can to make it work,"
she continues. "a lot of them started as the label for the
particular band so they could release their own stuff, and they're
used to doing their own work. it's a little different for me
because i'm not putting my own records out. what i really want is
to help build a supportive community for our musicians.

"i want these artists on the label to feel like it's their own
label."

i did some digging today, and found out a little information about some of
the ca dates:

west hollywood house of blues tickets go on sale on may 20th, for $35.  i'm
not sure if this is for both dates or what, but that's just what my friend
told me.

summer fat fry in aptos village park:  bass says tickets go on sale this
friday, 5/19 at 10am, not may 20th.  it's general admission for $32.  indigo
girls are playing on saturday 7/29, and john hiatt is playing on sunday
7/30.

no info yet about the sacramento, memorial auditorium show on 7/21 or the
greek theatre in berkeley on 7/22, however the woman at bass gave me the
number for the greek theatre ticket office: (510) 642-9988.
if anybody has any info, please share!

but what's up with engelbert humperdinck being scheduled for 7/21 at the
memorial auditorium?

can't wait until july!

ok so i got to my mail box this morning and had no mail?..wow..i can't remember the last time that has happened.  so i thought i'd pose a question to the list...and i don't know if this has been answered before.  i was talking to a professor of mine (who i am successfully recruiting into ig obsession), and she is a mellonhead...being fan of john mellencamp...i know other artists have followings and names, dead heads, parrot heads..i was wondering if there was a name for ig fans.  now i realize that the most important fans are called listees...but in general do we as obsessed fans have a name for ourselves?....just wondering if anyone had any suggestions, and it doesn't have to be a "head" name as other examples illustrated.  my professor, after thinking all one weekend, came up with am and em's..like (m n m's the candy), you know for amy and emily...i thought that it was ok but figured we could do better...infact i know we can...so lets hear it...what are y'alls suggestions???!
?

i too did some digging, and found out that engelbert humperdinck is
scheduled for the sacto convention center theater on the 21st - which
happens to be almost right across the street for memorial auditorium and
the box office for the convention center also handles tickets for memorial
auditorium...  completely different venues, but managed/run by the same box
office.

so, shall we all make it a double feature?  i vote to go to the engelbert
humperdinck concert after indigo girls!  ;-)  actually, i should not make
judgements, since i have never, ever, heard anything performed by
humperdinck (but darnitall....  whenever i see that last name, i just want

i'm not sure if this has been posted, but i just got my tickets for the fat
fry featuring indigo girls, and wanted to make sure to share the news.

ig are appearing the first day of the two day festival, saturday, july 29th.
each day is being sold separately, and the saturday tickets are $32. they'll
be $36 at the gate. people under 14 are free, if attending with ticketed
person over 14.

it's an all day festival. the gates open at 11, and it's general admission.

tickets go on sale at bassticket outlets and streetlight records (in san jose
and santa cruz) on saturday.

however! i just bought mine at ticketweb, www.ticketweb.com. you can find out
more about the venue, there, as well.

speaking of which, hob is usually a 21+ venue unless otherwise noted . . .
does anyone know for sure yet whether ig's show will fall under that
category?  'cause boy . . . i tell ya, that pesky 21+ thing has been giving
me grief like you wouldn't believe the past few months . . .

we all know how much i don't like nigc stuff, but i gotta add in here!!!

gun and roses rock. they used to , and they still do. their music was huge
then, and if brand new would still kick total ass now!

they were everything that a rock band should be hard rocking, lyric pumping,
ugly, doppy, and down right horrible in concert!

i can't wait for my kids to go fingering through my cd collection and come to
me saying "wow, dad, gun's and f*cking roses rocks!!!!..........and who the
hell are the indigo girls?"

there was a funny thread years ago on the list that i should have saved.  it
postulated that axl rose and amy ray (note the same initials?) were actually
the same person.  i wish i could remember all the parallels between them, but
think about it ... have we ever seen axl and amy in the same place at the
same time?   ;-)   i've never seen axl in concert but amy sure plays rock

subject:      nigc - first real male gay kiss on television
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

sorry for the nigh but i thought this was interesting.  it may be a good
step in the right direction for the gay community.
"dawson's" serious male smooch
ross and joey swapped spit on friends. michael j. fox  and michael boatman
locked lips for spin city. and jack and will got frisky on will & grace.
why, then, should we care if two gay men smooch on dawson's creek?
because it's the first one without tongues (figuratively) planted in cheek.
in what's being dubbed a historic first for prime-time tv, the wb next
wednesday will play host to the first romantic kiss between two men--that
is, the first involving two serious gay characters in a real relationship.
not even ellen pulled that one off.
after leaving viewers hanging last night, boypals jack and ethan will
finally get close for the season finale, titled "true love." and unlike
previous male kisses played for laughs (or female tongue-tag played strictly
for men's curiosity...and sweeps) some see next week's buss as an important
step for gay portrayals on the tube.
"this is a milestone," says scott seomin, spokesman for the gay and lesbian
alliance against defamation. "there has not been a romantic kiss between two
gays or two lesbians on prime-time network tv. and i'd like to think it's
going to be no big deal."
of course, same-sex kisses are never so simple. the wb found that out
earlier this month, when letter-writers blasted the network for airing
alyson hannigan same-sex kiss on buffy the vampire slayer. and ellen
degeneres caused her own firestorm in 1997, when an episode of her abc
sitcom included tv's first lesbian kiss.
but dawson executive producer greg berlanti says this is no cheap stunt.
jack and ethan's relationship has progressed, he says, and both characters
have been developed to a point where the kiss makes sense.
"this culminates where jack is in a place where he can kiss ethan," berlanti
tells the new york post. "he's ready to identify himself as gay and take it
to the physical level. and there's actually sort of a bittersweet turn
following the kiss."
berlanti adds that the network has been encouraging about next week's
episode. "this is the culmination of 36 episodes," he says. "if you examined
every single character in the show, it's all about the 'firsts' that people
have."
but, as most dawson fans can attest, next week's real controversy will
likely stem from another potential kiss.
that's the one involving cutesy heartbreaker katie holmes--and whichever
preppie love interest she decides to maul.

hi everyone,

the show is at the snow park outdoor amphitheater at
the deer valley ski resort in park city.  the show
starts at 7:00 p.m., the gates open at 6:00 p.m.
tickets go on sale tomorrow 5/20 at 9:00 a.m., you can
buy tickets at any smith's tix location or by calling
1-800-888-8499 or 801-467-8499.  tickets are $31 which
includes the service charge.  they are giving out
wristbands now, though i don't know why because it is
a ga show.  maybe they are expecting it to sell out?
i've never been there but i think deer valley is a
fairly small venue.  i did get a wristband just in
case.  oh, and when i got my wristband the girl who
gave it to me told me that if you buy the tickets in
person that you had to pay with cash!  i don't know if
this is true but just in case....

see y'all at the show,
diana

there has not yet been a kiss between willow and tara
on buffy the vampire slayer.  i think they are talking
about the response to willow choosing tara over oz.  i
do like the way they are handling the relationship,
and not promoting it with ads like, "watch our show,
we have lesbians!"

ok... i am an avid buffy fan, and i have to say this
is confusing me too! first of all, me and my friends
have a "buffy night" every tuesday and have been
paying very close attention to the whole willow-tara
relationship. so far all there has been is hand
holding, turning out the lights, and some hair
stroking... no kisses!
second of all, i saw the actor who plays xander at a
convention and he made a point of talking about how
the wb wasn't going to be able to show them kiss, and
the creator joss whedon in interviews also said that
they weren't able to show the physical intimacy
between two girls with the same explicitness they have
for hetero couples on the show... but then again, if
the wb is going to let two guys kiss which is a bigger
taboo, i dont see why they care about two girls. maybe
its because the kiss wont lead to an actual
relationship like the girls have on buffy. btw how far
did ellen go in this respect?

tgif everyone! hmmm, the list has been pretty quiet lately... everyone saving up their energy for the amphitheatre tour or what?!
does anyone have a copy of the ig austin city limits show from 1998 that they'd be willing to copy? i lived outide the u.s. in 97/98 so i missed the whole shaming of the sun period (true state of withdrawal, very sad, the only ig tour that i've missed since 1989). any takers? please email me privately.

thanks,

i am wondering if maybe the kiss between willow and tara got nixed before
they could air it.  which would be why they blew out the candle and left it
to our imagination a few episodes back.  just a thought.  who knows!

acutally what  he said was they were not going to show them doing physical
to leave more mystique least in the interview i read basically he said you
can see all the physical stuff elsewhere so hes doing more of the
emotional and the not seen is sexier then the seen bit

true, he did argue for the power of the imagination to
fill in the blanks better than anything he could show,
but he also said that he couldnt do it anyway because
it is a network show...and besides, altho it's a valid
cinematic technique, in this case it just smells
likean attempt at justification

why does society make such a big deal about same sex kissing? if anything it is more romantic to watch, but that is also coming from a dyke's view.  i just think it should be allowed and not looked at that negatively.

"why does society make such a big deal about same sex kissing? if anything it

i would have to agree with nat that society shouldn't make a big deal out of
same sex kissing--however, it has been proven, that society en masse can be
quite stupid.  why does society make a big deal about anything?  who
knows....and, unfortunately, same sex kissing isn't the so called "norm" on
television.  society should do a great many things--it's up to open-minded
individuals to work on opening the minds of other individuals, with hopes
that if we do this enough, society will lose a majority of those close-minded
individuals who make life so difficult.

as to same-sex kissing being more romantic, i would have to disagree.  i
think that any kissing between individuals who truly care about each other,
whether they are straight or homosexual, is what makes the romance of the
situation.

for one, i can't stand to see any couple slobbering all over each
other--however, i think that kissing in a truly romantic (non "let's get
laid") way...or any couple holding hands or showing that they care for one
another is what contains true romance.

a really excellent book about the legalization of
consensual crimes (prostitution, drugs, gay sex, etc)
is:
"ain't nobody's business if you do : the absurdity of
consensual crimes in our free country"
by peter mcwilliams
it's chock full of intelligent debate, great quotes,
some history, and damn good sense. plus its a fun
read!

thanks for that post!  i read the list of performers,  and saw
.......miriam makeba,
mother of south africa (in my oppinion).....
i was so pleasantly surprized!   i didn't know
she's touring the u.s.   i hope she comes here
to the twin cities sometime.......she is just
wonderful.  she was exiled for  30 years
for speakig against apartheid     i'm glad  she
was allowed home, in the early 90's.

if you ever come across any f miriam's stuff  be
sure to listen to sangoma.....that is greaaa
aaat! i wish the girls would go to africa and get a load of some of
their traditioal styles.  i'm sure they found a lot iof that in cuba,
but  there they can trace the roots of what the learned.

i'm not of african descent, but i just love some
of their music especially all the traditional.
communal  way they have of doing music.

many listees are college students--school's just about out for the
semester. probably posts will be low till people get re-situated.
on an entirely different note, i just saw rose p. open for vic chesnutt and
kirsten hersh. rose was amazing, you can tell she's been turing and honing
her stuff.

did anyone see that will and grace episode though? it's one of my favorites.
it was about how two guys were supposed to kiss on some ficticious prime
time show, but at the last second the camera panned to the fireplace and the
network didn't show it.  so jack (outraged of course) and will went to nbc
to complain.  the network wouldn't do anything about it so jack and will got
themselves on the today show (rather by chance) and will kissed jack. right
there in front of god, al rocher (sp?) and everybody.  pretty funny stuff.

still though, i think it's interesting that the writers of  will & grace
brought up the same topic that is being discussed here.  from the standpoint
of a foreward thinking heterosexual male, i don't really care what they
show.  i do however, care about what they do not show.  i think shows that
deal with homosexual characters should try to replicate to some degree the
issues faced by homosexual people in real life.  where is the episode where
will or jack is the victim of a hate crime?  it'l never happen because that
doesn't get the laughs.  wait for an episode of law & order to deal with
that one.
