i think my favorite song would have to be "girl with the weight of the world
in her hands", simply because of an experience associated with it. that was a
recent song that my guitar teacher an i tackled in our lessons. we worked on
that one in between hendrix's "purple haze" and ac/dc's "back in black". go
figure. anyway, there's one part in the song where emily stresses an 'r'
sound, so my teacher singled that out and we then began imitating it and
sounding like two drunken pirates. we tabbed it out by listening to the
recording, and i happened to come across the tab book for nis in the store
the other day, and according to that, we totally nailed it. so it was really
cool, because that was the first time that we had really worked together on
figuring out a song, and not just her telling me how it goes. some substitute
titles we came up with for the song were: "the song with the big ass long
title", "the aarrrrrggh song", "the emily's being difficult song", "the
producer genius song", "the jackie loves emily song", and "the yee
motherfuckin haw song". those all came out of whatever conversation the song
inspired each week. we couldn't call it by it's real name until we had
completed it. it was a weird superstitious thing. my favorite amy song of the
disc is "123" because i think she totally rocks on that song, the guitar
parts are genius, and i absolutely love the ellen james society. okay, i'm
done now. peace y'all.

carrie mah luv....i have a tape (i'll bring it with me in august) that mr.

mum's to make bootlegs.....maybe later when i'm a little more settled i'll
make some copies and pass them out.
so if some of y'all want to wait a few weeks, i may have some copies to pass

how about inspired gems (ig initials, and inspired by the girls?)for the
name of the webiste!
by the way, any listees at the cats cradle show??? woa was that awsome and
packed, prolly to capacity! cats cradle is an awsome place to have shows cuz
its just standing whever you want. my gf and i stood at the stage (shich is
only about waist high) and i stood purposley off the side cuz the dressing
room and "back stage area" is there. yea amy was just walkin around on stage
right in front of me. she came into the crowd to video tape and i walked up
to her and asked her if she needed help!! she had a delayed reaction on the
way back to the "back stage area" and she just giggled at me and i kinda
loudly said "no im serious!!" then between sets my gf was like "hey amy, hey
amy" and she came over and my gf said "can i have your autograph?" amy
smiled and said not right now but later!" i was so embarresed! it was soooo
awsome !! i knew she couldnt give an autograph in the middle of changing
sets! my gf was being really cute and she knew i wanted it!i tried not to
act like it was a big deal but woa! amy was not even a handshake away. she
walked right by me and i just went up to her. she watched the whole show on
the side of the stage like 10 feet away from me! she was gettin into it!
danielle howle was fun. i kept wanting to go up on stage and make her stand
flat! she raised the mic and stood on her tiptoes the whole time. my calves
hurt just watching her. my gf and i danced and danced though and kept
nugging ppl accidently which pissed some ppl off. after my gf got "put on
hold" w/ amy, she asked danielle who was standing of to the side for her
autograph and danielle jumped up on hte stage and ran over! it was cute!!
tami heart was incredible!! she is extremely talented and her personality is
amazing!! you just have to giggle!! she is kinda shy in a cute way and she
just makes ya smile! i whished she were able to play more but she wated to
"rock out" w/ the butchies! her acoustic solo songs were really fantastic!
very impressed! and she lives here in durham, nc!!
amy's set was short (three songs) but she rocked. johnny rottentale was the
only one i caught cuz i heard her say that in the song. that was on a banjo
(i thought she was goin go into 'go' and now i know why i thought that!) and
one was eletric and one was acoustic!
lift was very cool! their drummer and bassist were really good! they were
quite a good band and sounded like they gelled really well together.
the butchies were the last group i think, (dont know if three finger cowboy
was there) and we left after a few songs. i thought that was the last act,
but maybe it wasnt! they were fantastic if you like grunge punk. its not my
favorite type of music, but talent wise the butchies are phenomenal. their
drummer is exceptional and the bassist flat out rocks.
ok thats my lil update. any others at the cradle please email me or post!
have a good day. hope mine gets better.
i hope i dont get repremanded for this post since its dameon stuff. i
figured since it was amy ray it was ok to post about it. could someone
clarify what the list serv post about daemon stuff not appropraite for post?
have a good one!

ya know, i lost my nis disc (and never had strange fire disc which i love so
im gonna get the rereleased triple pack of the first three cds) but, hand me
downs is one my favorites on that disc as well as the girls w/ the weight of
hte world... the phrase "is the glass half full or empty i ask her as i fill
it. she said it doesnt really matter pretty soon im bound to spill it." that
line has stuck in my for years. that girl they are singin about is me. i
couldnt have said that any better myself but that used to be my philosiphy
for life. i love that whole disc.
hammer and a nail is incredible. a friend of mine was talkin w/ me recently
actually and i was goin through a shit of a time (still am) and i was talkin
lots about how my brain wont shut off and stuff and she randomly was like
"you know the indigo girls?? they have a great song called hammer and
nail..." i was like your kiddin me, thats my favority group and i love that
song. she pointed out however that there is a line "...think myself in
jail..." and so on and i never had picked up on that. i never got all the
words to that song but i love it!! the whole planting seeds metaphor and
parrells is really profound. 123 is also amazing! well, i guess they are all
my favorite. i miss that disc:( many ppl i know always thought that was
there best album. they each evolve so much i cant really say! have a great
day.

i know these two songs arent on nis, but, i just wanted to say that kid
fears was one of the first ig songs i ever heard years and years ago and
theres something about that song that gives me chills ever time i hear it. i
loveeeeeeeeeeeeee minor key songs and i can relate to every single word and
"story" in that song. its heart wrenchingly powerful. actions will follow
you full cirlce round is also one of me favs. amys voice is exceptionally
perfecto on that song. its so true ya know? your actions will follow you
full circle round....tu shea tu shea. have a good one all.

when napster first came out, a bunch of us bruce springsteen fans
thought it would be a great thing for sharing live shows. unfortunately,
it's not, from a technical standpoint, not to mention the fact that
campuses are banning it left and right. on napster, you connect to one
server. this is transparent, and if you're connected to server a and
somebody else is connected to server b, you won't be able to see any of
their stuff. also, you can be watched, as evidenced by the metallica
thing.
a solution: gnutella. gnutella is a truly distributed network --
there aren't really any central "servers" per-say. instead, your computer
connects to computers a, b, c ... as many as you want. when you do a
search, you send a message to all the computers you're connected to. they
send a message to all the computers they're connected to, etc. this is a
more grassroots approach - the decentralized nature makes it trickier for
folks to deny access, and while not completely anonymous, it's far better
than napster. you can share whatever files you want, not just mp3s, too.
check it out -- pretty neat stuff.

what a great quote!
but when you really analyze your definition of those things, you realize that you've got a very narrow definition of gay and straight if you are not able to attribute that appearance of strength to heterosexual women.

i know. that's what "eponymous" means - named after oneself. :)
i'm guessing that no one got it that i actually knew the answer to my own

i have listened to that cd at least 1,000 times - never heard center

well, my girlfriend came home and just asked why?..then she looked at em and said it didn't hurt that they were a 10 outta 10 on the cute factor.
the boy is way laid back and quiet but you can see in his eyes he is thinking about life and the universe..so he is galileo...the girl however...feisty...playful and adventurous...i wanted to name her virginia...but it doesn' treally fit...jamie said.,..janice....as in joplin....she has long white streaks of fur that go wildly outta her nose bridge region and her ears ar. so big she just looks wild...so i think janice is it....
jonas a dn ezekial was my first choice...but didn't know how to feminize one of em for her....too cute...thanks ya'll and sorry for the waste of space..i tried to ask my boss off for the day for maternity leave but it got denied...oh well...sparkie... ( and nickolas, galileo and janice)

naming a kitten can be quite an experience ..... i named my cat orion due to
the line in an ani song 'untouchable face' "i see orion and say nothing the
only thing i can think to say is ...." (which is also a great song for
swearing because of the meaning behind it)... at the time i was having
issues with my now ex gf breaking my heart and having the kitten was a great
thing to getme through ....
however i have always thought that having kittens named saliers and ray
would be cute the little boy could be ray ...or whatever you so choose
just a fanatic's random thoughts,

these kinds of questions come up a lot in this group, i wonder if we
shouldn't archive the answers somewhere where we can reference them
when we need them? for example, recording a show isn't something i am
likely to want to do soon, but i may one day and when that day comes
i'll have to ask the question all over again :)
what do you think jen? a section in the faq maybe? i know it's not
tecnhically ig content, but recording an ig show seems close enough to
merit some attention...
some other things that might be useful:
a list of ig sites?
a list of ig mailing list member sites?
a list of boot recordings?
just a thought.

i agree with you jean. i may someday want to boot a show too. and at that
time i would have to ask the question again. and the other lists sound like
great ideas too.
a list of ig sites?

ig will be playing on the briggs and stratton "big backyard" stage at 11
pm. there is no charge for the show beyond admittance to the park. its
general admission, get there early! i don't know who will be playing
beforehand, but lesley gore (of "its my party" and "judy's turn to cry"
fame) is going on at 6pm. often times the 6pm performance will do a second
set later on *shrug* i don't know for certain.
chances are that the big draw on the grounds stages will be blues traveler
which is also going on at 11 pm (harley-davidson roadhouse) so you might
get a good spot just slipping in, but don't count on it!
admittance to the park is $9 at the gate. but you can also get in free in
the following ways:
* donate a musical instrument at the south gate from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm
(offer good every day)
* bring non-perishable food to the north gate from 11:30 am to 4 pm
* present your valid piggly wiggly savings card to any gate from 5 pm to 8
pm (first 9,000 only)
check the summerfest website (predictably, www.summerfest.com) for more
details.

hello all,
first of all thanks for taking the time to read this.
my girlfriend and i had thought that we would be out of town for the
6/9 philly ig show, so we didn't purchase tickets. turns out that those
plans were changed and we will be in town.
however, this is her first ig show..actually our first ig show together
so i was hoping to get some good seats.
i was wondering if i could persuade anyone with any extra tickets to
let me buy them. or even if anyone wanting to make a few bucks extra
would be willing to give up two tickets. i also have some ig posters
that i could throw in to sweeten the deal.
if you'd like to discuss any of the above, please email me privately.
thanks so much for your time.
i hope everyone is enjoying life and love. this is truly a great time
to be alive.
take care,
jules

one. if you're in or around philly and you're interested in seeing
beth amsel (of voices on the verge) in a house concert this saturday,
there are still a couple of spots left. not many, but a couple. email me
pronto if you want to reserve one.
two. as many of us know, miss emily saliers' birthday is coming up
(sorta). fates willing, i will be seeing our favorite ladies in concert
that day in berkeley, and i would love to bring her a gift. now it occurs
to me that, for a food-lover like emily, there's no better gift than a big
ol' collection of beloved, tried-and-true recipes that are nonetheless off
the beaten path, things one can't necessarily find in the joy of cooking.
so how do we all feel about putting together a big compilation of our
favorite recipes, either as a box full of cards or a nicely-bound book? it
seems like a nice way for us all to pitch in together as a community and
give her something she can really use and appreciate. and hey, it'll be
damn cheap. ;)

mandy,
i like the recipes-as-gift idea.
the nicely-bound book version especially.
if this gets off the ground i have a great middle eastern chick pea stew
recipe that i would like to contribute.

wow. that was quick - five responses in what, ten minutes? i guess
i'll go ahead and start informally collecting recipes, and we can decide
what exactly to do with them later on. although i do think that,
regardless of the form in which we present them to emily, we should make
them available to list members, either in email or on the web. these sound
really yummy. :)

hmm. i remember a quotation from some interview or another (i'm
not sure it was about watershed, just cooking generally) in which emily
said "a little butter and cream never hurt anybody." that smacks not of
veganism to me,.... but then again, that might be out of date. i'm pretty
certain she's vegetarian. anybody know for sure?

they serve everything at watershed...including yummy fried chicken from what
i hear...i heard an interview somewhere where ig was talking about the song
they did with m.stipe for the peta cd years ago...and how that didn't
totally vibe with emily cuz she wasn't a vegetarian...just my .02 cents...

well either way i think she would still be touched that we took the time and
thought to do something like that, seeing as we all know how she loves
food...due to her restauraunt endeavor...sooo i vote we do it!!!!
peace and love,

wow. that was quick - five responses in what, ten minutes? i guess
i'll go ahead and start informally collecting recipes, and we can decide
what exactly to do with them later on. although i do think that,
regardless of the form in which we present them to emily, we should make
them available to list members, either in email or on the web. these sound
really yummy. :)
mi rinda:
> i just have a thought though. emily is a vegetarian right? is she
vegan?

hmm. i remember a quotation from some interview or another (i'm
not sure it was about watershed, just cooking generally) in which emily
said "a little butter and cream never hurt anybody." that smacks not of
veganism to me,.... but then again, that might be out of date. i'm pretty
certain she's vegetarian. anybody know for sure?

great idea!
and from one of the last interviews i read, amy is the resident vegetarian,
not emily. although it wouldn't hurt to have all veggie recipes (heehee,
couldn't resist a plug for cruelty-free dining).
mandy, i'll get that recipe to you soon.

hey y'all - actually, i don't think emily is vegetarian.... i was the one
who found the watershed recipes in food & wine a few months ago, and i
remember reading that the fried chicken was one of her favorites..... i
still have the issue, so when i get home i will dig it out and double check
to be sure.
mandy, i am happy to help out if i can. i could probably find a way to get
the recipes into some sort of book-type thingie, since i have recently
discovered that i have a pretty creative side when it comes to crafty type
projects (just moved into a new home for us.. and have been going nuts
painting/making/piecing together different things liven up the place). i
will also be at the berkeley show, thanks to susan's great tidbit on the
ticket sale dates! what will be difficult w/ a book is getting extra
copies for list members.... maybe a word document would suffice for the
mass distribution... any other ideas?

hey, everybody.....
just wanted to say how great the atl daemon show was! :) probably the biggest daemon family crowd assembled on one stage. :) danielle howle rocked out (they did "you came a knockin'" :). michelle showed up towards the end and rocked out on her songs along with michael lorant and david the bass player. :) kristen hall was really good. amy sang a song and intro'd all the bands. :) and the jesus christ superstar things blew me away! i loved it! michael lorant......gosh, i've always thought he was so cool. he was definitely cool that night playing with jcss, mm, and gerard......he played drums, sax, keyboards, guitar (seems like something else), and he sang a song from jcss - he was so great. altho he's not a mainstage kind of musician, i'm always focused on him because he's so damn talented!
we rocked and rolled and sweated and drank for about 6 hours that night. it was my g/f's first time to see all the daemon artists besides mm and her first time to see amy ray (cause she's a newer ig fan). she was so excited to be standing just a few feet from her. :) she'll get used to it in atl. :)
and this friday, all atlantans and those traveling from afar will be able to enjoy the ig! yeah!
look forward to seeing all the regulars on friday. :)
amanda
p.s.: for all john mayer fans......he'll be playing sat, june 17 in b'ham at city stages in downtown b'ham! that's where i live so i'm definitely excited! what a cutie!
