i'm sure they're worth $$ to someone.

this person said they paid $400 for the set - probably bought it on ebay
themselves.
the original er1 was a cdr with a very cheep looking cover. i think they
then reissued it on silver disc.
i think i paid $35 for my er1 from the source. maybe a bit less for er2. and
never got 'round to getting er3 except for a cdr.

if you're a college student and there's a show at your school, one of the
best ways to get backstage at a show is to be a part of your activities
committee- the organization responsible for planning all the shows.  of
course, there are no guarentees and the passes usually go to the students who
are heads of the organization, but you never know.  i got to hang out on the
ben harper tour bus because of this. i'm not a huge ben harper fan, but it
was still a neat experience.  damn, those tour buses are nice!  and every now
and then there are extra perks... our director of student activities got to
meet ig, cause she got passes through rose's manager who was opening for them
that nite... it was a way of promoting rose, hoping that our school would
offer her a gig or something.  there are lots of different ways to get back,
but it all comes down to either knowing the right person or pure and simple
luck.

love and laughter,

thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers.  unfortunately,
the vet called at 3:45am and let us know that sid died in his sleep.  we
feel lucky that we got to spend more time with him yesterday, even if he
wasn't feeling so hot, and that we got to say goodbye.

he will be missed everyday, especially his great big bear hugs (when you
picked him up he would put one paw on either side of your neck and hang
on, and then rub his face in yours and purr loudly).  he has taught me
so much, and given me so much, and now my heart is broken, as i know
many of you can imagine.

thanks for letting me share my grief with y'all, it really means so much
to know that so many of you are thinking of all of us. and the ig
content here is that i've already begun to listen to amy and emily to
help me get through the pain, especially since so much of their music,
to me at least, is about facing the pain and making it to the other
side.  i only hope that i can do this.

with thoughts of my dearest sid,
nancy

i don't remember anyone mentioning, but they said at wolftrap that
spearhead was part of the cuba musician exchange that amy and emily did
a while back, and i believe emily and michael (lead singer) became
friends and emily really liked their music and said, at the time, that
they should do a show together sometime, and michael of course said
that would be cool, so that's how the whole thing came about.

as far as spearhead playing in prisons, i can see that.  as neil said,
music is often therapeutic (sp?) - as we can all testify from having
lived ig music.  spearhead (for those who haven't seen 'em) is sort of
a rhythm and blues band, and though their lyrics are repetitive to a
fault, there is a positive message between all the drums and jumping
around.  and i have to admit that days later, i find the chorus "all
the freaky people make the beauty of the world" going through my head.

and i have to add here that during this song at wolftrap the second
night, you could see emily backstage dancing, watching spearhead, and
it was so cute, cause michael goes, "do we have any freaky people here
tonight?" and emily was back there waving her hands in the air like the
rest of the audience. :)

subject:      re: amy's art...

hey...

there have been far too many people writing in agreement with me
publically and privately this last week or so. this is
unacceptable and it must stop!!!

:o)

i do like to be challenged on what i say. i may be opinionated,
but i am open to what i think. i also realize that my style
and/or humour might not be to everyone's liking, so you might
want to bear that in mind from time to time... anyway:

<<a few days ago someone paid $400 for a rites of passage promo
in vinyl that had artwork hand done by amy.  is this a
reaasonable amount of money for this?  i'm just curious what
these kinds of things really ought to go for.  seems a little
excessive to me.>>

these things are worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
and that price is based on good old supply and demand - and i've
rarely seen one of these for sale. who here would want an amy
original for $20?? for $400?? for $1000??

if i had budgeted $400 for art decorative stuff for my house-to-
be-if-and-when-we-find-one then i might well buy an amy
original. i could also probably pick up one or two decent framed
magritte/escher prints for the same price which i would probably
enjoy more (i've never seen an example of amy's 'art' but i
guess from the auction description it's nothing special - you'd
probably pass it up if you didn't know the artist.)

but these (the prints)  wouldn't have the same resale value as
an amy original. if someone paid $400, then someone else must
have been willing to pay $390 or so. i'm sure they could make
their money back, unless there's a sudded flood of amy originals
on the market.

so is $400 an excessive price? i say probably not. (i guess i
could have just dont it in one paragraph though...)

i'm not sure of details yet, but i've heard a rumor via the metroland

saying "kid fears" was from _back on the bus y'all_--technically true,
but... come on! also, "midnight train to georgia" wasn't the second

i believe i have an orginal self-titled vinyl in vg condition that i paid
$3.00 for, i would also like to know what it is worth and if it is rare.
wouldn't it be a great item to get signed!!!!

also, i am going to the souix falls concert next weekend and taking the
advise i have read on meeting ig.  my husband and i plant to get there
around 3:00-3:30 and stay until midnight or so in the hopes that i can
finally give them each a necklace that i am making them and maybe get an
autograph, nothing too interruptive for the girls.  but i was wondering if
any listees would like to meet up and hang out.  there will be quite a few
hours before the show and it would be great to meet some new people.

also, i have never been there before, so i have no idea what the setup is
for parking, or where the tour bus would be.  so any pointers are much
appreciated.

sorry so long,

however late their acts go.  dinner prices range
from $9.00 -$20.00, and that includes entertainment.   i would like to
be there before
the ig show so i'm suggesting we all meet  there at 6:00. so okay
listees how does that sound?  would like to make reservations, am open
for suggestions on time and place.

any ideas? what's the consensus?  another
idea since i'm going to stay  after the show
to try and say hello to the girls is we could all wait outside and talk.
i would prefer to go out to eat before the show, and it's a more
intimate setting.

---begin article---

indigo girls kick off central park
summerstage series in n.y.
joan osborne and members of spearhead join them for encore
of 'midnight train to georgia.'

correspondent diane gershuny reports:

new york - "this was supposed to be our summer tour,"
amy ray said, laughing, as she and musical partner emily
saliers greeted a bundled-up crowd on a damp and chilly
evening at the central park summerstage opening concert
tuesday.

(click here for an overview and the schedule of the
summerstage concert series.)

the indigo girls kicked off the evening with "peace
tonight," from their current epic release, come on now
social.

the masses of people surrounding the stage were on their
feet from the first note. as night fell and the stage
lights went up, the front line of enthusiastic fans, bathed
in a luminous light, seemed to hang on every lyric and note.

the girls rolled through material from their 10-year
career - including new tunes such as "gone again," "faye
tucker" and "ozilline" (realaudio excerpt) as well as
tried-and-true classics such as "closer to fine," which
became an aggressive audience sing-along, and "galileo."

they also dusted off "kid fears" from 1991's back on the
bus, y'all.

the first of many guest performers showed up early, with
joan osborne contributing harmonies to the opening number,
"peace tonight." (osborne, with sheryl crow, kate
schellenbach of luscious jackson, meshell ndegeocello and
others, appeared on the indigo girls' come on now social.)

on "shed your skin," a hip-hop-like track from 1997's
shaming of the sun, the band got a funky lift from show
opener spearhead's saxophonist. and an atmospheric version
of "virginia woolf," from 1995's 1200 curfews, sung by
saliers, featured crow's violinist lorenza ponce.

"get out the map," also from shaming of the sun, drew
cheers from the audience, some of whom waved homemade signs
at the band. but when they tore into "go" (realaudio
excerpt) and invited the audience to raise their hands, the
predominantly female crowd did just that, and a blanket of
outstretched hands swayed in time to the tune.

"i wrote this because i was upset with the church," saliers
explained in an extended intro to "philosophy of loss." as
she accompanied herself on acoustic guitar, she verbalized
her feelings about the church's unwavering stance on
homosexuality.

over the course of their career, the indigo girls often have
found themselves enmeshed in controversy because of their
social activism - last week, for instance, they played at
a concert in washington, d.c., in support of "pirate" fm
radio stations. in past years, concerts they've scheduled at
southern schools have come under fire from authority figures
wary of their sexuality.

at one point during the evening they were joined by come on
now social co-producer john reynolds, who coincidentally was
in town. also sharing the stage was the stellar band featured

on the recent cd: carol isaacs on keyboards, accordion and
percussion; matt brubeck on cello and percussion; clare kenny
on bass and vocals and blair cunningham on drums.

loved not only for their lilting, ethereal harmonies but also
for their unabashed honesty, the indigo girls scooped up
flowers offered from gushing fans at the close of the show.

the encore began with singer/songwriter rose polenzani -
signed to ray's label daemon - with ray and saliers
providing harmonies. then, with lights blazing, all the guest
artists - from the members of spearhead to osborne -
returned for a rendition of gladys knight and the pips'
"midnight train to georgia," a song the girls included on
1200 curfews.

the indigo girls show was the first of three benefit programs
scheduled over the course of the summer to support the
otherwise free, multicultural, multimedia summerstage series,
which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this season.
(sonicnet.com is a sponsor of summerstage.)

i'll give these a shot.

<<i got my hands on the original indigo records
strange fire vinyl in vg condition, and i'm just
wondering how much it's worth.>>

$50 - $80
more for the clear vinyl version.
perhaps less now the early recordings discs along with
the epic cd have made this musically obselete.

<<i believe i have an orginal self-titled vinyl in vg
condition that i paid $3.00 for, i would also like to
know what it is worth and if it is rare.>>

assuming it's the 'indigo girls' album with "closer to
fine" and not the 6-track e.p. then it's probably only
worth around $5-10.

crazy game 7" $25-30
indigo girls e.p.: $100-150
club r+r: $90-110
reverse-1: $70-80
shades of indigo: $30-40
three hits e.p.: $15
shed your skin e.p.: $15-20

i think that covers the major rarities. probably you'd
get more for these on a good ebay day. some indigo
girls fans are psycho enough to pay silly money
though.

i think boys don't cry dealt with sexual orientation, but not in a very obvious way.  i thought it was perfectly handled because it left that issue understood instead of directly explained, except for the scene when brandon denies being a dyke.  which was so important because i think most people really think transgendered people are just gay people with a kick, but it just ins't true.  i guess i'm just in love with the film, and excited that my friends have seen it and seemed to learn a lot from it.  well, one of my friends was a little thick, but for the most part i've seen a great response.

but that's just my 2 cents.

hi folks,

just got back from the artpark (lewiston, ny) concert.  fantastic show!  i
originally didn't think i was going to be able to make it, so i didn't buy
a ticket...at the last minute, my conflicts freed up.  at 10 am this
morning, there weren't any orchestra pit tickets available online.  by
10:30 am the front row freed up, so i was a happy guy!

the show was a lot of fun (a little too much fun for one girl who jumped up
onstage during galileo).  emily looked a bit tired.  amy looked great.  she
was wearing great boots.  uh, but anyway, the setlist....

trouble
gone again
power of two
shed your skin
cold beer and remote control
ozillene
love's recovery
romeo and juliet (amy solo)
peace tonight
chickenman
philosophy of loss (emily plus band)
go
least complicated
strange fire (by request, go nancy and company!)
midnight train to georgia (yes!!  with openers spearhead and kelly hogan)
shame on you
closer to fine

encore:
faye tucker
galileo

during georgia, the previously mentioned hyperactive girl put her arms
around me and didn't let go.  i didn't quite know what to think.  :-)

all in all, a great show.  i dove over two rows and under the third to get
a pick.  hello to all the nice people i met during and after the show
('specially nancy, my dancing partner).

subject:      amy ray talks best of, solo album
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

http://wallofsound.go.com/news/stories/indigogirls061500.html

after  a long, eventful 14 years, the indigo girls  plan to pause and take stock
of  their  career  via  a retrospective album that will collect favorite moments
from  their  nine  releases  and  add a couple of new songs the duo; amy ray and
emily  saliers;  will  record  later this summer. just as soon as they wrap up a
two-month  summer  tour, which kicked off june 2 in atlanta and wraps up july 29
in santa cruz, calif.

"we  both  have a few new [songs] in the works," ray says. "we're just trying to
get  through  the  beginning of this tour, then we're going to sit down with our
songs  and  start  learning them and figure out what two songs would be best for
this."

as  for  previously released material on the album, ray says she and saliers are
polling their manager, friends, and people at their record company to figure out
what  should  be included. "i've never been a big fan of greatest-hits records,"
ray admits. "this is a hard thing to figure out how to approach. we never really
had  hits,  so  it's actually easier in a way; we can pick what we think are our
strongest  songs.  we'll probably put it together in a way that tries to reflect
what we think is our growth and our diversity over time."

the  collection is one of several projects the duo is working on now. the indigo
girls  were  active in the campaign for low-power fm radio stations and recently
played  at  a  rally  in  washington, d.c., celebrating the establishment of the
program.  they're also planning their annual honor the earth tour, which will be
held during october and will include the native american blues group indigenous,
as well as other acts to be announced.

ray  says  she expects that the group will take a "long break" after that before
reconvening to record a long-promised acoustic album. meanwhile, ray is going in
the  other  direction  on a solo album she's been working on for her independent
label,  daemon records. she's been recording with the butchies; a north carolina
lesbian  punk  trio;  and plans to finish during the late summer and early fall.
"it's  sort  of  melodic  punk," she says of the new material, "like crazy horse
meets the butchies, something like that. it's loud, but some of it flows.

"it's  not  going  to  be  a  brilliant  masterpiece  or anything. it's my first
attempt; i'm trying to be patient with myself and just get it done."

++"long break" - yikes!  does that mean they're not coming back here to ireland.
its been 6 years already since i've seen them.  i just may sob!++
fare thee well,
marion

(important bootleg announcement further down in this post, look for the
****)

http://www.geocities.com/vipid1/indigo.jpg

this is a pretty good scan of the new promo cd for cold beer and remote
control.  the inside cover of the digipak includes two very blurry,
static-y on purpose pics that i'm sure are taken from stills of the new
video we've been discussing.  the live versions are from11/19 & 20/1999
at the filmore in denver, so probably all this stuff will be on that
video.  here's the tracklist:

1. cold beer & r.c. - studio
2. interview
3. gone again - live
4. interview
5. peace tonight - live
6. interview
7. ozilline - live (this is great too y'all)
8. interview
9. cold beer - live
10. interview
11. shame on you - live (a speedy version with the les paul, not the
strat for you guitar junkies)

i thoroughly have enjoyed it.  i wouldn't pay the prices that are going
on ebay, there's one for $61 right now, but i think if you call your
local indie record store that buys and sells used discs, these will
start popping up a lot.  you could try calling them and if they're a
small enough operation, they could just ring ya when it comes in.
that's how i get all my stuff anyway.  can you believe that i buy so
much from my local indie store guy, that when this came in, he just
gave it to me - gave it to me - i almost kissed him.  but then i just
bought a bunch of ace of base singles from him - but that's another
story.... i digress.

anyhow - rest assured that i have this, which means all of you can have
it for a blank and postage if you can't find it elsewhere, but don't
bug me for it yet.  it's too short to go on its own, and i don't know
what i'm gonna put it with yet - thought it'd make a good pairing with
shades of indigo (ya know, the other interview disc), subtracting out
the studio versions, and that may be how i handle it.  unless any of
you have any suggestions?

anyhow - i just got a new job after 7 years at my current one.  i'll be
working for circuit city corporate headquarters in their info systems
department.  the cool thing is that i can buy stuff at cost.  the bad
thing is i'll probably blow every ounce of my pay increase on technical
stuff - but at least i can finally afford a minidisc recorder and join
all you boot-makers out there.  ****anyhow, if you're planning to ask
me for a bootleg, you can't right now because i'll only have my
disc-burner through next friday, and i don't think i'll have that at my
new workplace.****  yes, i've been burning all your discs at work.  so,
all that activity is gonna have to cease until i can buy a new one and
figure out whether i'll be able to do this stuff at my new job, or
whether i'll just have to do it evenings while i'm home.  in any case,
i'm definitely gonna be treeing more, once i find out how to get the
artwork on the net - i just can never get it to be real clear.  again,
i'm taking suggestions.

so - sorry for the ramble - but i had a lot to tell y'all.  i'll let
you know as soon as things are settled and i can tree a boot with the
new promo on it.  then i can get to all that other stuff i've been
promising too.

-tara

well hmmmmm. let me see here, i'm in agreement with amy in the sense
that i don't  like "greatest hits" releases  either.  acoustic or not,
you can dress the up all you want, but that
doesn't change the fact they are still the same songs that are already
available. so i disagree
with ms. ray on that .

a best of  would be great for newcomers, but it's nothing of substance
to those of us who
collect ig stuff and already have live accoustic
versions of all their epic songs.  i think if the
girls ar going to do that,  than they may as well
put their post so videos out too for those like myself who never got to
see them.i  already have their epic stuff, and so it doesn't make sense
to go out and get songs i  already have.

i wish i could make my request for another video compilation. to the
girls in a way that i know they would. get it themselves.

have there been enough to justify a new compilation? i haven't
heard mention of any for the latest album.

i was out of the loop awhile, but i can only think of three
tracks that may have had a video made: bury my heart, shame on
you and possibly get out the map.

additionally, if there's already a new live video coming out,
there's not likely to be another one following soon after. i say
stick the promos (if there are any) at the end of the concert
vid. save us all some money :o)

            garfunkel to play the palace

(launch) - art garfunkel has added great britain's
buckingham palace to his tour itinerary for the
summer. garfunkel, paul simon's erstwhile singing partner,
was invited by the duke of york to perform
at the palace on july 2 as part of a benefit for the
national society of prevention of cruelty to children).
garfunkel's show will be broadcast live by bbc grandstand
and the program will also feature special
tennis matches, including one pitting former wimbledon
opponents bjorn borg and john mcenroe
against one another. meanwhile, garfunkel - who's currently
working on a new album - will be on the
road in north america throughout the summer and early fall
and he's eyeballing fall dates in pakistan,
china, south africa and the united arab emirates.

the butchies meets crazy horse? i can't wait for this album! i do hope it
leans toward neil young melodically - at least i hope i can understand the
words listening to it. i liked the butchies in a lot of ways (aggressive
sound, aggressive-positive energy, sense of humor, percussion, cute), but i
really need more melody and lyrics before i could really be hooked. also,
and granted i've only heard the butchies once, it isn't obvious to me how
the rather constant loud distorted percussive songs they do could tap
deeply enough into the range of emotions i would hope to hear in an amy
solo album. i am hopeful that the combination of amy+butchies would bring
it all out.  amy and neil young are similar in the way their music affects
me. it's simple stuff, but it reaches deep. i hope the butchies are as
effective in supporting this for amy as crazy horse is for neil. that would
be an awesome album if it works out. it sounds promising to me.

did anyone watch the neil young things on vh-1 last night? i really like
that guy. i feel another neil young marathon guitar-playing weekend coming
on...

so i've been debating, list or private... list or priavate. but i'm a
loudmouth on email, which means i don't have to be one in real life...
:o)

<<<<stick the promos at the end of the concert

oh, so if we don't like cons we shoouldn't

*sigh*

the people who just want the new promo videos (if indeed there are any) pay
their $19.99 and get a free concert.
the people who just want the concert pay $19.99 and get some new videos at
no extra charge.
and people who want both are delighted at not having to buy two separate
items, saving themselves valuable dollarage.

hypothetically, of course.
nothing contentious there.

<<second, i don't care if they only have three or four, if they could just
pack'em altogether for
i' rather than ona two hour show i wouln't like.>>

i think i understand that.

if you know you're not going to like the video of the cons tour, why are you
paying even more $$ to go see it live??

you also seem to be saying that you're happy to buy a 'greatest hits' video
with the two or three new videos (or less, ~i don't know~). i assume you
already own watershed?
but you don't want to buy the new greatest hits cd because you already have
the songs even though it will have two or three new tracks?
and you're quite entitled to think that way, it really is none of my
business, i just want to see if i'm understanding correctly.

<<besides the judds did that for their fans.>>
"weird al" did the 'new videos at the end of a live show' plan.

love and mercy (mmmm... new (signed) brian wilson live cd... mmm...)

vinyl values------wow are you guys misled!  there are only 60 colored ep
12" (and there is a blue one as well as a clear one!) that were ever
pressed.  i think they are worth far far more than quoted by
wedgiemonster!   i have seen them go for $750 to $1500+ as these items
are extremely rare----not many ever made and fewer exist now-----supply
& demand you know!  (you have to hunt for this stuff and not only on
ebay!)   there are also colored versions of the strange fire lmm2 as
well---(red, clear, clear with black stripes and clear with mulitcolored
speckles.)  there were never more than 60-75 of these ever pressed
either!  and not many of the black vinyl strange fire or ep are around
that are in that good of shape as not very many of those were ever
pressed originally.  this also stands true for the first 45 rpm in
picture sleeve! rare items bring much money!  has nothing to do with if
the songs are available on cd!  rarity & originality is what the true
collectors are looking for!  you guys need to look at the discography to
really get a grasp of what this stuff is worth!  ebay is not and never
has been the place to  really get the rare stuff!  sheer cd/music
hunting and digging around for years at music shows and music magazines
is the only way you are gonna get really good stuff for not much money,
plus hunting luck & persistance!    good luck hunting!  it is a fun &
fulfilling hobby!  look up the indigo girls discography!  it is worth
it!  lynn

1. there was never a bury my heart video. period

2. the soy video was only played at the end of the great woods ppv - i never
heard it being in rotation on vh1 or mtv (but i'm the dork who thought t.
chapman never made videos for anything on new beginnings"

3. i do think there was a clip of the water is wide used as a pseudo video
from one of the lilith specials.

further - do you really think the process of making a video (at least
~100,000 to produce, with the chance of getting on to vh1 rotation?) vs. a
promo tour, where they know their fanbase craves live stuff - the music
video is a vestage of corporate greed - i dunno the last cool video that
made me go buy a cd - i mean - besides rem's videos (which i never see)
there are a bunch or great producers out there (way below the radar doing
stuff) actually...

www.insound.com was the last cool video i saw - a live catpower short - they
also have a documentatary on the life of benjamin from smoke - who died of
hiv and does the talking on "hey kind friend" (that's the song i need to
hear live...i love the song soooo much...)

mike r.

np: fugazi bootleg - their 1st live show - great stuff.

hi,

i don't know if this has been posted yet - it's from the indigogirls.com

________

15th june
           a message from amy

hi everyone-
we are four shows into our summer tour. it's good to be back with the
band. we have blair cunningham on drums, clare kenny on bass and vocals,
carol isaacs on percussion, keys, accordion, and vocals, and our newest
member is the fabulous cello sensation matt brubeck (yes, he's dave's
son). it has been a challenge getting my energy back after the daemon
records ten-year anniversary tour. the daemon tour went through 6 cities
with a menagerie of bands from the label, past and present. i came home
from the daemon events to two days of rehearsals, three new stray
kittens, and a new stray dog. the kittens have
homes now, but i had a few precious days with them. the dog - darter --
is at the vet being  treated for heartworms... he's gonna have a long
trying summer, but is a hard-headed
fella so he should be fine.

i have three songs finished for my solo project and am hoping for a feb.
2001 release. emily and i are going back into the studio in august to
record two new acoustic songs for a retrospective album that will be out
in the fall. right now we are starting to gear up for
our honor the earth tour. we will be sending letters out to bands and
prospective donors.
if you wish to make a donation, now would be a good time. the tour is
going to focus on two national issues: the nuclear waste transportation
act (yes, we are still fighting this, but have definitely made a lot of
progress) and the taxpayer supported slaughter of buffalo as they cross
over an invisible boundary out of yellowstone national park. we will be
raising money to grant to many different native environmental groups who
are still engaged in front-line battles against corporations and corrupt
governments. these issues run the environmental gamut and include toxic
waste dumping, coal mining, logging, and polluting of waterways. the
tour will run throughout the month of october and then wewill be done
for a while.

our summer tour includes some great artists that we have never toured
with plus some
musicians that you may have seen with us before. michael franti and
spearhead, a
soulful, r&b, reggae, hip-hop experience is playing a lot of shows.
shannon curfman, the
young blues sensation will be joining us in the midwest areas. also we
have kelly hogan, a dusty springfield-influenced country, torch singer.
kelly has a new record out with
bloodshot records and it kicks butt. rose polenzani and mrs. fun will be
hopping on and off the road, as well as the butchies and michelle
malone.

on a political note... our activism with honor the earth, and everything
else for that
matter, depends on getting out the vote. if you are not registered to
vote, please do. if you
are registered, please vote. we may feel that the presidential campaign
is one big sham,
but senators and representatives on local and national levels really
shape our country's
policies. we are still working with the low power radio coalition to
insure that the fcc's
ruling to issue new low power licenses actually goes through. we spent
june 8th on capitol hill playing songs for senators to help drive home
the message of low power community radio. this is a populist issue and
really has a chance of going all the way. the national association of
broadcasters is really powerful, but we have a diverse, non-partisan
group on our side.

okay. i hope everyone is having a hot and sweaty summer... see ya out
there.

over and out... amy

just had to chime in here a wee bit, since my *second* favorite band is the
butchies and i have made a bit of a obsessive hobby of collecting kaia
wilson's work. i agree...the styles of the ig and the butchies are *very*
different but i think could be complementary if the following things mesh:

1) amy's voice in harmony with kaia's (and neither drowning the other out)
2) kaia-written lyrics, sung by amy
3) amazing bass by the butchies bassist alison and drumming by melissa york

why? cause really, kaia's vocal range is a full octave above amy's. so the
harmony could be really amazing. kaia writes amazing, funny, poignant and
political lyrics, and the butchies *as a band* feel more tight and polished
(imo) than the rotating-member-lineups of amy and emily's bands over the
years (wonderful, but all very different, and with different strnegths imo).

finally, i think the collaboration of amy and the butchies might
(hoepfully?) bring back some of the power and intensity of kaia's work with
her original band, team dresch. if you are lukewarm on the butchies, you
probably won't like td, but if you like em, you might just adore team dresch
(as i do). their breakup was one of the saddest moments of my scatterbrained
concertslut existence!!! they were a brilliant band who wrote fun,
rollicking punk numbers set to all the teenage dyke drama you can swallow in
a sitting :) check em out, ya won't be sorry

i for one anm positively sweating thinking about the possibilities of genius
this record could hold.

a video for the water is wide - with the indigo girls, sarah mclachlan and

canada's cmt video channel (on their rock n country show, which is about the
best mix i've ever seen on a music video station)  a year or two ago.
incidentally, that station also had a wonderful feature where you could look
up exactly what videos would be played that day, at exactly what times, on

hello, all
>the show kicked butt but where was sara lee?
>and of course did anyone boot this

ms sara lee hasn't played with them in a long time, has she??  and clair
kicks ass!

okay, so here's my review of last night.  first, what i can remember of the
setlist, the first 4 are in order, after that it's kinda random, but sort of
what i remember.

peace tonight
virginia woolf
land of canaan
romeo and juliet
get out the map
go
gone again
chickenman with a song stuck in there
hammer and nail (accoustic)
trouble
philosophy of loss
ozillene
compromise
tangled up in blue
shame on you
midnight train (with the other band)
andy
closer to fine

encore:
faye tucker
galileo
anyone?

fashion report, for those who care:
amy:  black, form-fitting tank or tee, with a royal blue kinda silky sheen
shirt, unbuttoned, untucked, over it.  dayam fine pair of blue-jeans, blue
suede shoes, cowboy hat.  (did she get a bad haircut?  has anyone seen her
without that cowboy hat for, like, a month?)  sexy, sexy.
emily:  army boots, navy "floods" with a cute fringy thing on the bottom,
white t-shirt with a green and white print unbuttoned over it.  very cute.

does anyone know what the song was stuck in chickenman?  it was something
like, "have you been traveling, yes i've been traveling, oh, i've been
traveling too."  it was kinda blue-grassy.  anyone know?  it was cool.

no johnny rottontale or sister, boo hoo.  sniffle sniffle.

go and faye tucker rocked ass!  as did compromise--i like that one way
better live.  they weren't very chatty, but at one point amy got left
totally alone on the stage, and she was like, "this is like a nightmare.
where'd everybody go?  i'm all alone!"  then she accepted some flowers from
the audience and kinda shook hands.

the crowd, i gotta, say, was kinda lame.  nobody started dancing until land
of canaan, except myself, two women behind me, and a bunch of guys on like
the third row.  (way to go, guys!)  there were way many empty seats, many of
which in front of me, i was on 13th row, left section.  why the hell do
people buy really good seats if they're not going to show up, the little
peckers?  hammer and a nail was totally cool, just the 2 of them with
guitars.  their playing and singing were very precise, except for the
occasional out of tune instrument, but the humidity here makes that happen
sometimes.  drives me bananas.  i was not at all disappointed.

if anyone cares, i was the girl in the far left aisle, yellow and orange tie
dyed shirt, with a t-shirt tucked in one of the arm holes, dancing my *ass*
off all alone.

and they must have had the buses in klingon cloaking devices.  i had this
big plan to wait, but no buses could be found--anywhere.  i drove around for
like 1.5 hours.

yours in rebirth,
chris ii

i usually go up and take empty seats in the first couple of rows. if the

okay, that's enough shameless butchies promotion:)

hey y'all,

there are some memories you can't put a price on.  for me, yesterday was one
of those days....

my friend katie miller had invited me to back her during an outdoor benefit
gig at compton's after dark following the annual gay pride parade.
headlining the bill was the wonderful acoustic duo anatara, good friends
with whom i've jammed on a few memorable occasions in the past....

the weather looked ominous for an outdoor show early in the day, especially
for a venue that's located so close to the niagara river, but the sun shown
warm and bright on marchers and musicians alike (take that, fred phelps....)

katie and i alternated short sets with anatara before an enthusiastic and
appreciative crowd.  obviously buoyed by the festive mood, katie turned in a
powerhouse performance, allowing me ample room to 'do my thing' - the
wonderful part about playing with katie is that the songs always take on
different lives during major gigs - i have many live recordings that i
cherish for those moments when the music takes off and soars as if it had a
life of its own....

anatara, with a huge and intensely loyal local following, received a
tremendous reception to their opening set, which featured songs from their
upcoming cd as well as from their most recent release.  especially notable
was the gorgeous ballad dance with me - that track alone is worth the price
of a dozen cds in my estimation....

during katie's second set we were joined by anatara's winnie bergner on
electric bass - the undisputed highlight was katie's hilarious song about
her pet chihuahua ethan's 'coming out' experience while winnie and i laughed
ourselves silly in the background....

winnie invited me to join her and songwriter/guitarist donna andreeff during
their second set, giving me a chance to dust off some classic blues licks
while donna sang a great blues parody from a lesbian woman's viewpoint - the
crowd reception when i left the stage after the second song is one i'll
never forget....

anatara closed the set with another rocking track from their upcoming cd,
with donna reminding me so much of amy ray as she poured heart and soul into
the vocal....

unfortunately, a prior commitment at a local coffeehouse forced me to
reluctantly depart at that point, much to my eternal chagrin.....

the event raised money for a number of community related causes, including
the national lupus foundation, aids community services, and others....

i am so proud to be a member of this community....

peace,
tim

i thought "johnny rottentale" (as in "peter cottontail") was only on the

certainly well received by most there, they had lots of people up and
dancing.   for the rest of you who may enjoy them, i would not recommend
starting with franti's live cd (which they were selling at the show)...
start with spearhead's "home" or even one from franti's first band,
disposable heroes of hiphoprisy.  if you listen to the lyrics, it will be
obvious why ig like franti.

hi y'all,

here's the complete setlist to the toronto (june 16) show....

go
peace tonight
three hits
get out the map
faye tucker
mystery
ozilene
least complicated
romeo & juliet
philosophy of loss
trouble
gone again
closer to fine
compromise
power of two
midnight train to georgia (w/ kelly hogan and her band)
shame on you

kid fears
galileo

fashion report
amy: those blue suede shoes, powder blue cowboyesque
        button down shirt, charcoal pants
emily: red t-shirt (that said 1996 football something or other)
unbuttoned blue buttoned down shirt, black pants and boots

(if anyone wants to see a picture, there was a picture in the
paper-who gave the show 4 out of 5 stars,
i can scan it and send it privately, just let me know.)

words don't explain how i felt during and after the show.
i can try though. this was the best show i've been to.
i think they were quite surprised but genuinly happy
and touched at the amount of people that were there and
who sang along (even the new stuff). there was a fair
amount of chatter (topics covered -to the best of
my memory: frank stanford,  baby ducks,
amy's grandma trying to get them on
the hee-haw show, celebrating diversity,
during the band intro how they stole each
member from other bands, lilith fair).
what stands out the most in my mind is
amy singing romeo & juliet and the both
of them smiling all evening.

i'm still in a state of utter euphoria.
they better get back to canada soon.

back to lurkdom,
cheers,
sandy :)

ps. hi lesley - it was great meeting you!

sorry if i'm repeating anyone's suggestions, i haven't yet read all my
e-mails from the weekend.

bob marley and the wailers have many songs that would suit your needs. "get
up, stand up" immediately comes to mind. reggae is rooted in revolution and
the struggles of the common people.

and maybe someone can help me here, would ziggy marley and the melody
makers' "concious party" fall into this category? i haven't listened to the
song in a quite a while.

and what about rage against the machine? i'm sure you can find something
there.

tracy chapman's "talkin' about a revolution."

and of course there is ig's "go."

it's interesting -- make that questionable -- how some reviewers have =
noted that atlanta's indigo girls rock the house without the aid of =
testosterone.
<br><br> as if the hormone exclusive to men is a prerequisite to =
lighting up the spot.
<br><br> i suspect the indigo girls don't care for such nonsense.=20
<br><br> neither do they have any interest in proving that women =
can rock out too.
<br><br> if you happen to be one of those sorry guys who still =
clings to the belief that a female rocker can't match the intensity of =
your fave male artist, you would be nursing a hole in your chest after =
the first five minutes of the indigos' concert at the molson =
amphitheatre last night.
<br><br> that's the effect that show opener go boasts. the =
anthem-like, hard-rocking jam that also happens to open last year's =
come on now social was nothing short of a sonic boom.
<br><br> go also contains these lines: "i know you kids can stand =
the rain, i know the kids are still upsetters, 'cause rock is cool but =
the struggle is better, go, go, go."
<br><br> unlike the majority of their contemporaries, amy ray and =
emily saliers aren't scared to voice their views in their music.
<br><br> they've performed in support of pirate radio stations and =
native american environmental groups, and list several political =
organizations worth helping in the booklet accompanying the come on now =
social disc.
<br><br> and well before the renewed debate surrounding the =
effectiveness of the death penalty in the u.s., ray penned faye tucker, =
a poignant song about the first woman executed by texas since the civil =
war. the song also happened to be one of several highlights of their =
memorable show here.
<br><br> it's impressive how many flavours their material boasts: =
there's the punk feel of compromise, the gorgeous ballads ozilline and =
peace tonight, and their sweet acoustic hit closer to fine, which had =
everyone standing and singing along, and others with a celtic or folk =
vibe.
<br><br> all were delivered with superb harmonies, style and =
grace.

hey all,

i have a few questions about summerfest in milwaukee.  first of all, how do i get to the venue from i-94 (i will be coming from chicago)?  secondly, what time would be a good time to arrive to be sure that i get a somewhat decent view of the girls?  i forgot, what time are they scheduled to play anyway?

thanks!

:-) karen

ps- seeing the girls at ravinia tomorrow. . . (!!!)

hey y'all.

i was just going through my cd-r collection and came across the wrek boot.
does anyone know the title of track #22?  the sound is kind of fuzzy on the
last six tracks so the only thing i could make out from amy's intro was that
it was a song she wrote because a friend of hers was going through rehab or
something to that effect.  the lyrics included the words, little boy, circus
and clowns and something about a golden horse i think. also, if anybody has
a clearer copy of this song  i'd like to see if we can set up a trade of
some kind.

thanks,
karen

hey y'all,

another question for you.  i've got an unlabeled cd-r with the following
setlist could any of you kind souls out there help me identify it?

shed your skin (dance remix #1), i don't wanna know (5 points pub intro), ?
(unidentified song definitely not a&e singing...me thinks something from
honor the earth perhaps), love's recovery, what's the buzz?, strange fire,
cortez the killer, center stage, shed your skin (dance mix #2), baby don't
you break my heart slow, get out the map, clampdown, go, closer to fine
(hootie & the blowfish), seasons greetings psa, philosophy of loss/i don't
want to live on the moon.

any info would be appreciated!

peace,
karen

hey all! hey, that wallpaper rocks!! thank you so much for that, its up

about this new virus. if anyone uses microsoft outloos, mirc or pirch,
be ware. i am very wary of virus info cuz of bogus ones, but this is
official info from the director of coputer services here at work and its

on our intranet, so i know for a fact its valid. just thought id share!!

vbs.stages.a is currently spreading and being reported in the wild by
icsa.net and several anti-virus vendors.  this new worm spreads using
microsoft outlook, mirc and pirch. the file attachment will come to the
end user with the following name life_stages.txt.shs but the user will
only see the life_stages.txt because the *.shs (microsoft scrap object
file) extension does not show up in windows explorer.

e-mail with attachments that contain the above name should be deleted
immediately. as always, please exercise caution when opening any
attachment. if you follow these steps, it should be safe to use either
outlook or netscape.

sounds like "attack of the killer b sides, v.4." the cd that neil, the
ever so fabulous, neil made.  i was just listening this morning on the
way to work, and as that unidentified song with the guy singing came on,
i thought, i've gotta ask neil what the hell this is, and who is
singing.  it's the one that begins and ends with someone reading quotes
from various people - one of the quotes was from chief seattle. neil or
anyone, what is this song?

me too, and lord knows that i alone have probably single-handedly reimbursed the cost of that video. :-)  of course, that was back when videos were of truly alternative artists, not just a reflection of top-40 radio.

oh, and the soy video *was* in rotation on vh-1, i caught it several times.

never mind her age -- she's got a musical maturity that is possessed by
very few people twice her age, wicked-yet-not-flashy guitar skills, and a
helluva sense of humour.
now, it's never a bad thing when people in my generation make music
with respect to genres other than rap-rock, but shannon is truly the real
deal.
i had the pleasure of seeing her in syracuse and then chatting with her
for a bit (and playing with her new puppy) at the lilac festival in
rochester.

she's from the same town as jonny lang -- the question being, what do
they put in the water there?  (and where can i get some?)

there's another neil on this list??!!??

<<i was just listening this morning on the way to work, and as that
unidentified song with the guy singing came on, i thought, i've gotta ask
neil what the hell this is, and who is singing.  it's the one that begins
and ends with someone reading quotes from various people - one of the quotes
was from chief seattle. neil or anyone, what is this song?>>

it's "can we go higher" a various artists single a la 'we are the world'. i
included it because the igs sang lead on a line or two, so i say it's
technically not a guest appearance (would anyone be interested in a cd set
of indigo girls appearances on other people's tracks? - maybe there'd be
3cds worth?)

speaking of attack of the killer b-sides, i'm formulating volume five in my
head, and was wondering if anyone had this they could cdr or mp3 to me...

long time no review.  just returned from the lovely venue better known as
ravinia in highland park il.  i just love when the girls do their outdoor
lawn tour.  ravinia is so much fun and i feel like i have waited forever
for their debut there tonight.  rained all day so i was feeling iffy about
the whole show.   would it be canceled?  would the ground be soggy?  would
i need to wear galoshes?  would i need to bring a personal tent?  you know
the basics.  then i realize screw that--i'm in the pavillion-who cares if
it rains.  sure sucked for the folks on the lawn when lightning flashed
during i want to say wood song.  it did rain towards the end but everyone
was pretty upbeat.

girls seemed very surprised by the fact that no one stood up until least
complicated which was like a third into the show.  they need to understand
that highland park is not used to rocking and fun and diversity.  quite the
eclectic crowd but the mean age was clearly 23 from what i saw.  they
played a good mix of old stuff--three hits, wood song, love will come to
you, rome and juliet (a first for me live--very exciting), power of two.  i
liked the set.  don't have a full setlist--sorry.  still dying to hear
strange fire live.  it's just not meant to be.  they surprisingly played
ctf and then closed with galileo (extreme sarcasm here).  seriously, the
girls never disappoint and it was great to see them again.  they haven't
lost a bit of their live touch.  amy bantered about the weather but that
was really all i could make out as the audio was down lower than probably
any concert i've been to before.  makes sense since yo yo ma is usually
headlining at ravinia.  wouldn't want to harm any of the ears of those rich
suburban homes nearby.  the low point of the evening was definitely waiting
for the metra train to take us home.  hmmm-can 5000 ig fans fit onto 4 cars
of a train.  bad planning--bad bad planning!!  great seeing you
margaret--hope your ass heals.  thanks sue for arranging the tix for me.
see y'all

three hits
peace tonight

come on over (not sure if this is the title)
least complicated
romeo and juliet

power of two
shame on you
philosophy of loss
fay tucker
the wood song
closer to fine
chickenman
(possibly a song here. i was in line for the train and couldn't hear.)

hmmmmmm.  i think it's possible tat "come on over" could actually be"
shed your skin" from off of shaming of the sun. i can see where you
would have gotten come on over, as those  words are repeated quite abit
.

did you hear word like  "come on over now. hey hold me console some
power controls me,
remorse it, can't force it, can't free it so be it." ?

but isn't that wonderful though?  i just love the sensuality in that.
words like "i got the hangman, i've got milagro, i've got a celebration
too. the flesh is strong, my spirit's stronger so shed your skin baby
now shed this,"

the words and melody rap themselves around and render one defenseless.

amy's very good at doing that.

fyi.....for anyone coming to the ig show who wants to support workers
trying to get liveable wages,  the following hotels are on srike :
raddisson south in bloomington and thunderbird in down-town mpls.  these
two hotels are part of a chain in which the highest  wages are $6.25 an
hour, no matter what your seniority is. they have no contract,
the afl-cio didn't agree on the last proposal, which would not have
allowed  the wages to increase if the minimum wages went up.

best western is pending.

event: indigo girls in concert

description: you've heard of the boys of summer. well, tonight it is truly the "girls of summer!" the
plaza will be grooving and singing to the unmistakable harmonies of the indigo girls. their voices
consistently reach into the audience and make their listeners feel at home, understood, inspired. with
songs that stir and soothe, their music is energetic and a synthesis of serious contemplation. the
atlantic based duo of emily saliers and amy ray have an instantly recognizable sound, and they will
energize and inspire the capital region audience with every song. this special night begins with special
guests, hue. back by popular demand after their summer 1999 performance, this trio of angelic voices
plays piano, viola and cello to their own creative compositions in a style coined "chamber soul".

hey!

first of all, there are 4 new acoustic (well, 3, they list mwmf) duo dates on the ig web site!  :-)

august 9th- michigan womyn's music festival, walhalla, mi
august 11th - venue tbd, pittsburgh, pa
august 12th - empire ctr, empire state plaza, albany, ny
august 13th - nautica stage, cleveland, oh

ok, as promised, here is the setlist for ravinia:

go
gotm
3 hits
peace tonight
ozilline
love will come to you
shed your skin
least complicated
r & j
trouble
gone again
po2
shame on you
philosophy of loss
faye tucker
the wood song (by request...there was a ? on the original setlist)
c2f
chickenman
(encore):
bury my heart at wounded knee (w/ kathy richardson and shannon curfman)
galileo

the show was great.  amy was full of energy.  emily seemed a bit mellow to me, but we couldn't see her as well because we were on amy's side, and some tall dude (who kept making out with his girlfriend) blocked my view.  besides that, i could see (the tall dude finally leaned into his g/f's seat...perfect for me!).
they did the wood song purly out of request, which i thought was cool.  ravinia is such a beautiful venue, but i am so glad we had pavillion seats.  it is true...from the lawn you can't see anything.  the only drawback is the season ticket holders who come to any show not really caring about who is playing.  since there are so many season ticket holders with reserved seats in the pavilion, there was not much room in the pavilion for fans.  (i think you were out of luck if you didn't purchase tickets for the pavilion the day they went on sale).

anyway, i didn't meet anyone from the list (but then again, i didn't have a sign or anything).  :(  i'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

:-) karen

ps- i got a drumbstick!!!  hehe.
