hey everyone,

here's a review from sarah (rainriver@aol.com).  she is the person i sold my
ticket to since i could not attend....

brian

fashion report from the ravinia show:
amy- longer hair, finally growing out the blond streaks --in my mind, a good
thing-- blue swede shoes (finally i got to see them), dark pants, light blue
cowboy type shirt with sequins (?)
emily- longer blonder hair, best hair cut i've seen on her in a while. red
shirt with writing with a colorful shirt over that and blueish pants.
i got to sit in the second row because i decided i was just going to go down
front and see if there were empty seats. turned out some girls had one extra
ticket (amazingly serendipidous)
best set list i've heard, really incredibale. it seemed like they played much
longer than usual. i caught two picks from sulli at the end. felt like i
should give one to someone else but i didn't. the girl next to me got a water
bottle from on stage.
you on this list? i was the girl in the red bandana.
anyway, intersong dialogue for you all:
amy- i woke up early this morning and- actually we got in at like 5 this
morning and i couldn't sleep so i was doing laundry and watching the weather
channel the whole time and i thought for sure the show would be canceled but
here we are (or something like that)
emily- (before 'philosophy') the church is guilty of discriminating aganist
gays and ...i think they should...quit it. and that's what this song is about.

amy-it's balmy here, feels like home
emily- (overlapping) feels like florida.

they also played wood song and chickenman per request and had to make sure
they remembered it. all in all it was an incredable concert.

well, i'll give my review of the show. things didn't work out, so i didn't
end up working backstage for the show. oh well... disappointed, but i'll
live. anyways, it seems that a lot of people on this list took the train,
however no one mentioned the horrendous drive there. the venue lots were full
so they had us parking in garages, in train stations and at the high school.
all in all, parking took anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. luckily they
had free shuttles to take us to the show. i bought my lawn ticket while on
the shuttle, off of some chick who had an extra one. i ended up standing at
the railing, at the edge of the pavilion, dead center. not a bad viewing spot
at all, but the sound was really shitty. some of the people in the pavilion
mentioned that the sound wasn't good, but it was much better in there than on
the edge. the reason the sound there is so low is that there's a decible law,
meaning that the volume of the performance itself can only be so high. the
crowd obviously can't be controlled, but they do regulate the performances.
most shows at ravinia are classical in nature, so there's no need for intense
volume. plus, ravinia is situated smack in the middle of an upscale
residential neighboorhood, not an out of the way venue at all, such as the
world music theater. so therefore, the sound on a pop show will suffer. i was
standing next to three girls at the railing and we all had the bright idea to
ask every person who left the pavilion if they were leaving for the night.
many season ticket holders just stay to check things out and then leave mid
show. well, of course we got into the pavilion thanks to some generous folks.
once inside, sound and visual quality was much better. some of the people
were prissy and the "sit down, i can't see" types. and i do respect that
somewhat because they should get the chance to enjoy the show too because
they bought a ticket, and if asked nicely i don't mind sitting or moving. so
we just moved to a big crowd of dancing fools and had some serious fun. the
big piss off of the night was when my friend cathy came out to sing with
them. she didn't tell me that she was gonna perform (or else i'd have made
her drag me backstage). and then she went and hugged my emily, which is just
wrong. :) i was being sarcastic about being pissed off, cause that must have
been serious fun for her to have sang with them two times now. after the show
i kept calling her on her cell phone to try and bum a ride back to my car, as
there was at least a 40 minute wait for the shuttle. :) and that was my
night. i didn't wait by the buses, which were in the employee parking lot for
those of you wondering, because i've met them a couple of times already. i've
yet to get a picture as proof though. there's always milwaukee, and if cathy
goes, she'll hook me up... hopefully. she's probably sick of dragging this
kid here along. :) i didn't go into detail about the show itself, because
it's been done and covered well. okay, goodnight y'all. peace

i tried to post this on the kristen hall message board but i can't access it.  i thought this was really neat yesterday.  i live in alabama and i was in books-a-million (the southern b&n) and the music they were playing over the speakers was one of kristen's songs!  :)  from her new album.  i recognized the song, then i realized that it was really her.  i thought that was pretty amazing so i just wanted to share with all the kristen hall/atlanta singer/songwriter fans!  :)  you never know just want you are gonna hear, huh?

why don't you sent email to russell carter artist management and ask
them, beg them, plead with them to make ig appear in your area.  they're
very responsive to such things.

howdy. hope you all are doing well. i just wanted to share something with
you. my mom is a house parent for some "mentally challenged" (or whatever
you are supposed to say) guys. well, i spent the day with one of them. we
went for a ride in my truck and listened to cons. he loved it. when we got
to my house, he asked if we could listen to "those nice songs" again. i
played "shaming of the sun" for him, and he danced around the livingroom for
nearly twenty minutes. i couldn't help but to smile. take care.

okay, i know, i know, of course, wxpn would play indigo girls on the day of
the concert on june 9, 2000.  imagine me walking out of a meeting, getting
into the car, turning on the radio, hearing amy's voice sing, "would you
trade your words for freedom, that's a barter for a blind man", then
realizing that i have yet to make a mix tape with "three hits" on it!

as i flew home last weekend for my youngest brother's college graduation, i
flipped through the delta air lines "sky" magazine, and whose faces should
appear in sky-like fashion (a la official website) but emily saliers and amy
ray!  the song in the "chick mix" is "trouble", and i heard it twice on the
way back from los angeles to pennsylvania.

songs on my brain playlist today: "cold beer and remote control, you and me
of the 10,000 wars, and shame on you"--well, of course, i was listening to
the october 5, 1999 boot from the philly tower show.

happy sighs and yawns,

diane

greetings all!
i just wanted to introduce myself since i am a brand-spanking new member to
the list.  i am excited to be here!
i am 30 years old living in tampa florida.  i am a youth care worker in a
group home for teenage girls and a recent graduate of massage therapy school.
i take the board exam to see if i get my license on wednesday. yes i am a
nervous wreck. :)
i have seen the girls a handful of times and love their music.  i had the
pleasure of meeting them a few years ago when they were having an autograph
session at a bookstore...at the end of the session they played galileo right
in the store because they said they felt bad not being able to get to
everyone in the autograph line. it was an amazing experience...i was standing
so close during the song that i could have poked amy in the eye.  but somehow
i don't think she would have appreciated that.  : )
anyway...i will stop babbling now.  glad to be here!

peace,
~wolf

hey there:

could someone out there give me the list of the songs on the
new video coming out in july?  i was a little too quick on the
delete key last week. i still have a ton left to delete because we're
changing our email service here at work, so i'll probably have to
sign off and use my hotmail address.

anyway, i hope everyone is enjoying the summer tour.  i'm still
not over the fleetboston pavillion shows. wish i could take a little
jaunt to another location to catch a couple more - but my ig budget
is well over-spent - 0h well, what can ya do.  i am, however, going to
catch the albany show in august - free - yay. (thanks "girls")
have a great weekend.

the fact that we can go other places to see them.  my last show was
december, not to bad, that's only 7mos.  i am going crazy sitting here at
work.  just 2.5 more hours until we hit the road.  i can't wait to see

who cares, i get to see the girls.  hope to see some of you there.  cross
your fingers for me that i get to meet them and that our boot comes out
good.

thanks for listening, i just had to tell someone how excited i am.  everyone
here just thinks i am insane for driving 10 hrs for a concert.  they don't
know what they are missing, do they?

if anyone knows, or the list adminny folk could email me that would be

well, maybe there's some ig content . . .

due to a corporate merger, clear channel communications had to sell some of
its stations, including the frequency that currently hosts channel 103.1
here in l.a.  (and you all know how the girls feel about all things
corporate.)  103.1 will be changing over to a spanish-language format soon.

channel 103 is, at the moment, the only major radio station in the l.a. area
that plays ig songs, and also has a rather diverse and enjoyable playlist.
(at the moment, there's a ben harper song on.)  but due to the merger, it'll
soon be going off the air.  personally, i'm loath to lose the only station
where i can hear ig and tori amos, and dammit, i like getting to hear b.b.
king, aimee mann, the stones, neil young, sinead lohan, duran duran, and a
whole slew of other great musicians without changing stations!

apparently, the current plan is that clear channel is going to support
channel 103 in moving to a broadband internet broadcast, provided that
there's ample evidence that listeners will keep faith with the station.

their website, http://www.channel1031.com , is currently running a petition
to collect said evidence, and also has more information about what will
happen.  now, i know that there are pros and cons to an internet-based
broadcast, but in case y'all are in the area, like this station, and want to
support this attempt to keep it going, head over and sign.  if not, just
wanted to let everyone know what was going on with the station.

thanks, y'all.

they added two songs sometime before shame on you:

1. chickenman  ( oh this was wonderful!)
2. ghost  ( loved that too

i don't recall if michelle malone played on chickenman, i know she
wasn't doing ghost.

the audience was wonderful to ig, but you could tell most were not
familiar with michelle,
and shannon........although shannon really rocks!!

i loved michelle malone, her voice is a powerhouse, and i just love
accoustic  music.
oh and faye tucker was in response to george w. bush  for executing
shaka sankofa
(aka gary graham.  last night, to the end he proclaimed his
innocense..his dying words "i didn't do it.")  the song rocked  and i
loved
amy's  wicked and crazy laugh.

i  was really ale to cut loose tonight.

hey,

ok, so it looks like i actually will get to see the girl on the west coast because i need to interview at graduate schools.  coincidentally enough, the girls are playing in both eugene, or (near u of oregon) and berkeley, ca... my first two choices for grad school.  the thing is, i will only be able to make one of the shows.  so now i am debating whether i'd rather see the girls in eugene or berkeley.

as far as the greek theater (berkeley) goes, only unreserved and lawn seats are available.  although i have lived in berkeley before, i  never been to the greek theater.  my question is, is the venue like ravinia in chicago where you can not see (and bearky hear) anything from the lawn?  if that is the case, i will probably opt for the eugene show (which is, from what i could tell, all general admission).

anyway, any suggestions would be helpful.  please send any information to me privately.  (i don't want to clog up the list).

thanks heaps!

:-) karen

hey folks!

did anyone else see in the atlanta constitution this morning where it
says that ig will be collaborating with the atlanta ballet to improve their
next season? that's pretty cool!! the only thing that really bothered me
about the article was "... the popular lesbian duo the indigo girls".  i
don't understand why they have to put that in front of their names... i don't
ever want myself introduced as "... the popular (or unpopular ;) straight
singer, katie bennewitz". that's just horrible!

    argh. some people.

but isn't that an exciting prospect? anyone? anyone? ;)

have a fantastic saturday!

in the st. paul pioneer press for friday 6/23rd the girls were
desciribed as "accoustic duo
the indigo girls"  it's not really an accurate description.  they do so
many kinds of styles,

they've gone from being more folk to being  more folk-rock. i think
that's more  a style of rock than folk.

show in ames on tuesday? i have an extra ticket in the 3rd row of the
orchestra pit. i will give it away for free to anyone who would be willing
to give me a ride from kansas city and back. i don't trust my car, and
i'll have to rent a car if i can't get a ride. if i you don't want to give
me a ride, i'll sell it for what i paid ($40).

email me if you're interested. the first person who is willing to give me
a ride and back will get the ticket. anyone interested in buying the

delivery of the ticket can be in either kansas city or ames.

i wish i could see the girls again......i just saw them last night, i
appreciate that amy and emily
need a break because it was obvious on the stage. emily looked
absolutely haggard, and
amy wasn't jumpng around (of course that's not so unusual being she had
two surgeries.)

seeing them before their hiatus..again is only wishful thinking....as
hiatus'  for my favorite acts, scares me a little......i get to thinking
"gee.
hope i see them again......most of the time when  hear a group is goig
on hiatus  i associate that with breaking-up. and i begin to
think they're not coming back, if they are it  could be  two years, or
ten you know?"

but at least they'll still be friends this way....i'd hate to see them
hating each other, and have it end up  on stage, as in the case of the
everly brothers.  granted they are back together now,
but when they broke up, they had been together
way too long. with no break.

barb and all-

isnt there an honor tour  , a suff sessions amy's solo record (which em i
guess plays on) and a greatest hits package all due sometime in the next 12
months? that's quite a bit.

besides - i remember in 1997, i saw them right before the album came out
(well i had a promo cd, which made the shows sooooooo much more enjoyable, i
saw the summer tour in hartford (beautiful venue, so much better than
tweeter center) and didn't expect to see them for a while -  then they
played, well a block from my apartment right now, two miles from my then
college campus, a time on the way back from los angeles and then, a day
after a big disability conference in boston.

i've seen them 5 times this year already, without being all that obsessive
(no plane flights yet, but if they - dare i say - do bumpershoot again.
well, i may cross that line
(okay tracy and ani already have my eyes pricing fares...)

mime-version: 1.0

this article is from this week's southern voice (http://www.southernvoice.com)

dish: june 22, 2000

for weeks we'd heard the rumors, but on tuesday we got the official word. the
atlanta ballet has booked the indigo girls for "a unique evening of ballet
and rock" in its 2000-2001 season. the indigo girls will collaborate on and
appear live in a world premiere piece to be presented as part of a three-work
program at the fox theater march 15-18.

"we are all thrilled," said john mcfall, artistic director. "the reason this
is so significant is that the indigo girls, emily and amy, are voices of our
time, and they are consummate artists. the undercurrent of what we're about
is engagement and participation. i think this collaboration brings a dynamic
to the process that is full of vitality and imagination."

given that the girls are openly lesbian and very political, it's not hard to
imagine that some conservative patrons might object to their appearing with
the ballet. but mcfall doesn't seem worried: "it's not our endeavor to upset
anyone," said mcfall. "we are all here to get together. let's celebrate our
community. the atlanta ballet is privileged to participate in this
collaboration with these two wonderful artists."

in addition to the indigo girls' appearance, the ballet's new season includes
a world premiere production of "romeo & juliet," "peter pan," and the holiday
non-subscription run of "nutcracker." telephone 404-892-3303 to subscribe.

hey y'all

i hope you had a great gay pride weekend.

here in paris, it was great fun even though the sun was elsewhere!

it's so rare in france to hear about gays and lesbians so i was very
surprised to see a normally very conservative show have a special report
on gay pride that included a short subject about 2 women who got married
by their rabbi in san francisco.

well, they went to retrieve their wedding rings. they turned to the
camera and said 'well, they're engraved... it says 'power of two' which
is our favorite song and the date....'
the journalist never even asked who sang it but i was jumping up and
down on my couch!! yeeeahhh for the girls!

it's sooooo rare hearing their names in france where they are completely
unknown! well... it was not their names but...'po2'...close enough!!
the only other time was when sarah was promoting her last album
and talking about lilith fair at a talk show!

wow...

have fun y'all

carla

hey all,

just got back from sioux falls show.  all i can say is wow!!!!  i got
emily's signature and gave her my necklaces for her and amy!!!!!!!!  can you
believe it?  the girls have my jewelry, i can't tell you what a wonderful
feeling that is.

ok on to things that you are more interested in.  the show was absolutely
incredible, besides the fact that you are not supposed to dance at the
venue, because the balcony is not designed for it.  at a previous concert it
was actually swaying and scaring everyone.  but there was still some dancing
going on.  the energy that would have been used for dancing was used for
yelling singing, etc.  the girls seemed to be pretty happy with the audience
participation.  i was lucky enough to sit by some great people, who really
loved ig.  there were some there that didn't budge or sing, but hopefully
they walked away with a new perspective on what rock and roll is all about.
anyway here is the set list.

from mtv online at
http://www.mtv.com/sendme.tin?page=/news/headlines/000623/story4.html:

sara lee collabs with ani difranco on solo lp

with an impressive list of credits spanning nearly twenty years, veteran
bassist sara lee will make her debut as a solo artist with "make it
beautiful," an album due from ani difranco's righteous babe records on
september 1.

lee, whose resume includes work with difranco, the b-52's, gang of four,
robert fripp, robyn hitchcock, fiona apple, and indigo girls, recently spoke
with mtv news about her leap into life as a solo artist.

"i'm having now to say that i'm a singer, i suppose," lee said with a laugh,
"because i'm now singing my songs on the record. this is so thrilling for me
-- the fact that it's happened the way it has, after having been a bass
player for so many years -- to look at myself and think, 'i think i'm a
singer now, too,' 'cause i have to go out and front a band."

according to lee, her years of experience will be apparent on "make it
beautiful" in a new way, as her songwriting was done with bass in hand.

"my record is very funky -- i like to think it's very funky," lee offered.
"it's very groove,
rhythm-orientated. some of the songs came from basslines that i came up with
in sound checks. i very often take my little walkman to sound checks and
record basslines while playing with artists that i work with.

"i came up with a huge amount of one song in my head while i was driving,"
lee recalled. "the feel of it, the bassline, the melody, how the drum would
go. i just came home and put them all down, and there it was."

that song turned out to be the title track, which wound up with lyrics penned
by a riend (and one-time boss).

"ani difranco wrote the lyrics for me for that song, which was a very
thrilling moment for me," lee said of "make it beautiful." "i don't write
lyrics for my songs, particularly. i sent my songs, the music, to different
people to ask them if they would be interested in writing some lyrics. i sent
that one to ani, and she liked it."

some other well-known names contributed lyrics to lee's songs, some of whom
she had previously played bass for.

"[indigo girl] emily saliers wrote one," lee said. "ani did two, actually.
pal shazar did four songs, barbara gogan from the passions wrote a song for
me. kristen hall contributed; she wrote a big hit song worldwide called 'let
it rain' for amanda marshall.

"i was so grateful to the people who did work with me [because] i was
somebody that had never written a song before in my life," lee said,
laughing. "it's not as though i had any experience  to back me up."

according to lee, "make it beautiful" started as a self-financed project done
mostly for the sake of creative satisfaction.

"i knew very strongly at this point that i wanted to make a record," she
explained. "but it really didn't matter to me where it went. if it hadn't
come out on righteous babe, i was prepared to release it myself, not least of
all inspired by ani herself."

to produce the album, lee enlisted peter scherer, a musician she had long
admired.

"i was a huge fan of a band that he was a partner in, the ambitious lovers. i
used to go to every single show," lee recalled. "i didn't see him again for
ten or more years. i was writing these songs, and i didn't know where to
begin in terms of making a record. my manager suggested that i take it to
peter and see if he liked the songs, and he did. i was thrilled, because i
hold him in very high regard from a musical point of view."

among the musicians who joined lee in the studio are andy gill (gang of
four), ivan neville, charlie drayton (b-52's), zack alfred (david bowie),
eric schermerhorn (the the, they might be giants),  eran tabib (spin
doctors), and james brown sax player pee wee ellis, who contributed a horn
arrangement. once "make it beautiful" was finished, lee brought the record to
difranco.

"[ani] had heard my music all along while i was writing it," she explained.
"she had expressed the notion that she may be interested in it. i sent it to
her, and ani loved it, so she asked me -- in her own way, which was so
endearing -- she asked me if i would consider being on righteous babe,
because she would love me to. i was thrilled, of course."

with her solo album ready for release, lee told mtv news that she plans to
begin some promotional work while completing her upcoming touring commitment
with the b-52's (see "kate pierson talks b-52's tour, new projects, more").

"the record will be available on my web site (www.basiclee.com) from the 7th
of july," lee revealed, "even though the official release date isn't until
the 1st of september. i do want people to be able to get it, obviously, when
i'm out on the road. i'm hoping to visit a few stores or radio stations while
i'm out there as well."

as for lining up a road trip of her own, the idea is still in the early
stages.

"i'm planning on just getting the band together and doing some local gigs to
warm up and get used to being on stage and singing," she said. "ani mentioned
she would like me to open for her on tour. i'm not sure when [that would
happen], but that would be wonderful."

it's actually "ramblin' round"...just being nitpicky. ;)
but i totally agree--i bought the cd on a whim and it hasn't left my
cd player for a week and a half.  all the songs are great, not
just ig and ani.

hi all,

i had not seen anything posted yet concerning the athens, ga music and
arts festival this past weekend, athfest. i know that it was the same
weekend as pride and alot of people had to make the choice as to which
they were going to attend. i went to the songwriters in the round w/
david ryan harris, danielle howle, michael winger, and jay clifford. the
entire show was so great. i didn't quite make it until 2 a.m. i guess
it's a sign i am getting old. i thought that it was great to see so much
crowd support for all of the performers. they played at one love music
and dance hall and actually held the crowd in near silence at times.

just thought i would share!

smiles,
allison

just a brief report.  atl pride was awesome.  lots of people.  they said atl pride is now the third largest in the country.  nice crowds, lots of love.  the music was really cool this year with wendy bucklew, diane durrett, stereo popsicle, and the b-52s.  "love shack" rocked!  that was so much fun.  i had a lot more fun this year than i did last year!  so, altho i wasn't all keen on going this year, i am glad i did.  cause now i look forward to going again next year.

on the smaller stage was a wonderful girl - amy demerris.  i don't know if anyone got a chance to see her or not.  i didn't get to see her because i had car problems, but she lives in b'ham where i do so i am familiar with several of her songs cause she played some for me in her apt several times a year or so ago.  and i just picked up her cd today.  she's really great and i think most of you would love her music.

check her out at www.amydemerris.com.  trying to help promote a fellow alabamian.  :)  not to mention a great artist.

they are playing the briggs and stratton big backyard stage at
11pm.  you don't need separate tickets for the performance, only tickets to
the festival.  therefore, seating is ga.

does anyone have this email address?  do you think requesting songs to be
heard at certain venues would also be a thing to ask him about?

okay, i have what i think is the difinitive (for me) interpretation of
"studying the distance between a blanket and a gun."

when a livestock animal (e.g. a cow) gets seriously injured, most farmers
shoot it.  when a pregnant woman gets seriously injured, she might get a
blanket in which to wrap herself.  perhaps amy is contemplating what that
actually means about how we value life, human and animal?

whaddya think?

also, amy mentioned that she had to sleep on the side
of the expressway, in the middle of nowhere because
she was really exhausted and she saw a fire. "light
the embers of another". maybe she had a blanket and a
gun with her? i know that ms. ray is pro gun control
but who knows? or maybe she was wishing she had one?

interesting thread. i love "sister".

hiya,

i've been getting more and more into ig and i really like galileo.  i'm
sure this is an old topic and maybe i should just search the archives
for some interpretations, but i thought it would be nice to hear what
people understand of the song, and how interpretive versus straightforward
it is... :)

thanks,

indigo girls to collaborate with atlanta ballet

ithe pittsburgh post-gazette reports that the atlanta ballet has
commissioned original music from the indigo girls for a world premiere
next season, which the atlanta-based lesbian duo will perform live with
the dance company at the historical fox theatre. no choreographer has
yet been chosen for the piece, but atlanta ballet artistic director
john mcfall plans to hire a woman for the job, saying, "i think there's
a simpatico there that you can only achieve by taking that route."
mcfall added that the girls would write at least two new songs for the
25-minute work.

hey, everybody ---

with any luck, i'm shipping out tomorrow morning, and at the other end
of a long trip is austin, tx, and the us fencing national
championships.  for the first time in god-knows-how-long, i'm actually
unsubbing for the list for a bit.  maybe.  or maybe i'll feed my addiction
on the road...

of course, am & em have been along for the entire wild ride --
visualizing ig songs between periods, rockin' out at 4am on the long
drive to random cities, etc...  i could probably blame the whole entire
thing on them -- after all, listening to all this happy lisbin' music --
gotta have an outlet for male aggression somewhere, right?  ;)

started too old to be competitive, went too long without a coach,

i already have about 8 different filters set up on my outlook and that does
the trick and sends all my discussion e-mail's to different folders.  and
yes, some of these groups do have the [listname] in the subject line, but i
personally think it's not really necessary for the ig list.  i would guess
that most people are only a few lists, so it's not too hard to wade through
e-mails.  i'm on 7 i think, but some are very infrequent while others are
digests and also only a few a day - and i think that's more common that not.
so maybe because the ig list does not have one, we are actually different
than the rest?!

maybe so, maybe not...  was it for this my life i sought...

i know "egroups" puts the title of the group in brackets at the beginning of
the subject line.  but if you use outlook or outlook express for your email,
just set up a filter to deal with the incoming mail.  all messages sent to
this list will be addressed to indigo-girls@netspace.org  all you need to do
is create a folder called ig (or something) and then create a new filter
that says: whenever a message is addressed to indigo-girls@netspace.org move
it to the appropriate folder.

hope that helps!

first of all, i think "light the embers of another, and the night won't seem
so rough" is a suggestion she has given her sister, who has some sort of
painful disease, to light up a joint and get high to make the pain go away.
good try julie, but i really think she's advocating the right for pain
management patients to smoke pot.  thanks for bring this thread up.

second of all, i think chris talbot really hit the nail on the head.  thank
you chris!!  i've been thinking of that too.  i just couldn't get past the
"distance" part.  to be "studying the distance" seems so poetic to me, but
it just doesn't fit, in my mind, into a lyric that's so literal.  i was
actually thinking she was studying a map thinking louisiana looked like a
gun shape.

i know this has already been deciphered here, but could someone please
e-mail me the meanings behind this song....actually post it b/c i'm sure
other people want to read it.

hey!

so i was wondering if there is going to be a milwaukee list meet?  i have never been to summerfest before, so i don't know where a good place to meet would be.

i'm driving in from chicago (the north part, luckily) and i plan to leave my house no later than 5pm (probably a little earlier), so i should arrive at 8pm at the very latest (with construction on the toll road and rush hour traffic, yes, i am giving myself 3 full hours).

anyway, would anyone be interested in a listmeet?

who's even going to this show?

:-) karen

in reading this thread i got to thinking about some of the stream of
consciousness stuff amy comes up with.  and she has admitted to coming up
with some lyrics just to fit the timing and pace and rhyme o' the song.  so,
as to "the distance between the blanket and a gun" i think this just came
out of her and she let it ride.

however, i think in some ways this song is also in reference to her own time
on the road and what a draining life that must be. "...and the moon won't be
enough/ light the embers of another/ and the night won't be so rough...."  i
think this is a sexual theme but not necessarily.  i mean, she is more awed
by an alert audience of 1800 or smaller than any big venue.  she likes this
intimacy.  i think this "lighting the embers" line refers to wanting to be
able, in this huge thing "they" have become (the indigs), wanting to be able
to see the humanness of this large crowd.  to see our emotion equal to hers.
music to her is an intense and passionate thing and those things are
difficult to truly get across in the larger venues.

what'cha all think?

i liked the new way of chickenman...it had that ozilline flair!!
it also had a bit of that song about travelling and mountains...what was it
called?
i was excited about tuib too!!

oh, did anyone save their reviews of this show?  i like collecting reviews
of shows i was at.....

i dont remember any other unreleased songs.

um...now im just waiting to hear about when tickets go on sale for nautica.

hmmm, my thoughts on "light the ember of another" is that it is a love/lust
type line.  or even, just being with someone...keeping each other company
with conversation and such.
its not so bad if youre not alone...the other will protect you from the
monsters.

i think the blanket and a gun line is in the vein of kid fears.  when we were
kids, we felt that if we hid under our blanket we were safe from anything.
today, as adults, so many of us feel the only way to feel safe is with a gun.
i think amy was just thinking about the the distance we travel to change our
definition of safety.

hello everybody,

i just got a link to a new interview with amy off of my bruce =
springsteen newsgroup, believe it or not!!:-)  the interviewer actually =
asks amy about springsteen fan reactions to the new controversial =
springsteen song, 41 shots which is about the diallo case.  i think her =
answer is really good and interesting.  the rest of the interview is =
also cool.  check it out here =
http://news.excite.com/news/uw/000627/entertainment-arts-5

i have also included the text at the bottom of this for those of you who =
don't have web access.

interview: amy ray of the indigo girls=20

by greg jerrett
iowa state daily
iowa state u.

(u-wire) ames, iowa -- the indigo girls have been blending their folk =
sensibilities with activism since 1987 when college radio was a haven =
for underground musicians, men and women.=20

as amy ray and bandmate emily saliers move into the next millennium, =
"cock rock" and corporations dominate.=20

how do two female folk rockers hell bent on social issues keep their =
heads above water? the daily caught up with indigo girl amy ray, by cell =
phone, on the road in the great white north.=20

iowa state daily: your new album is a lot more electric than some past =
efforts; it's even been compared to bob dylan's move to electric by folk =
purists. is this a new direction for indigo girls or an experimental =
phase?=20

amy ray: it's funny that everybody's noticing because we really had a =
lot of electric stuff on our last four records, but i think that people =
look at this one differently because the electric stuff on this record =
is pretty loud and maybe produced slightly differently, which is good.=20

what i thought is that we've been trying to get the sound right, and we =
finally got it is as far as that goes. the acoustic stuff on this record =
is pretty organic, pretty acoustic like "gone again" and "ozilline," and =
the stuff we recorded with mandolins and banjoes i felt like the =
components of this record are stylistically similar to what we've done. =
it's just the way it's engineered and produced make it stand out a =
little more, so i don't feel like it's a huge break like we've been =
acoustic all this time and we finally went electric, because we've been =
using electric guitars for like five years now.=20

isd: it does seem like folk music fans and people who pay attention to =
folk music are real sensitive about changes like that ...=20

ar: not with us. we have some die-hard fans that are real supportive of =
us but they wish we'd go back and do some of the more acoustic stuff, =
and we will eventually because we love that stuff, too. our audience has =
been pretty supportive.=20

isd: so you don't feel like your audience is trying to keep you in the =
late '80s?=20

ar: we wouldn't let anybody hold us back; we're pretty adamant about =
being honest to ourselves, that's really our only obligation and our =
audience knows that. and i think they appreciate that they know what we =
do is what we mean to do. so we have a good relationship, i'd say.=20

isd: when you say that being honest is what you do, in terms of =
activism, you guys have a lot of causes you support. has that ever been =
a hindrance to your careers at all? not a lot of other people do it. pop =
music is pretty light these days for the masses.=20

ar: i'd say it's definitely a hindrance, but not so much to our audience =
as to the media, the press and radio especially. mainstream rock press =
like rolling stone and spin magazines, they don't like the image.=20

isd: that's a bit odd considering rolling stone's origins.=20

ar: as a woman it's probably harder to be political, for some reason you =
get a worse rap. a lot of our friends, zack [de la rocha] from rage =
against the machine, tom morello, they're so political and it's almost =
like the reason they're hip is because they're political and the reason =
we're not hip is because we're political.=20

isd: it's an unfair dichotomy.=20

ar: we just do it because we're activists and that's what we do.=20

isd: right now, bruce springsteen's doing a series of concerts in new =
york and he's been getting booed by his own fans when he plays "american =
skin" [a song about the shooting death of amadou diallo by new york city =
police]. why would somebody pay to see bruce and then boo him?=20

ar: his fans have a right to boo him, i don't think they're booing him =
in general. i think they're saying this is one song we personally don't =
agree with. you take a stand when you're on stage, and we're gonna take =
a stand from the audience. i think that's fair. i think he's brave for =
doing that. i'm all the way for him doing that song as often as =
possible. but i also believe that your fans have a right to say when =
they disagree with you and express that and it just shows that his =
relationship is honest with his audience that they're willing to do =
that. he's got so many fans in that population, the police and the =
fraternal order of police, and of course they're gonna be pissed about =
that.=20

isd: do you think activism has killed quite a few promising careers?=20

ar: i haven't seen activism kill a career. i think when you're an =
activist and a musician you do your thing and have a following. you may =
not be huge. we definitely have suffered from it; we're constantly =
struggling against image problems with the record company and the media. =
i wouldn't say it killed our career, and i don't know anybody else that =
it really killed their career either.=20

isd: so what kind of issues are you focusing on these days?=20

ar: we've been doing a lot of work around this thing called the low =
power fm radio coalition which has really killed us with radio. there's =
a ruling by the [federal communications commission] that just went =
through where they are willing to license a certain number of new =
low-power, community radio stations to help bring back diversity in =
music and diversity in programming and more local programming.=20

now the congress keeps coming up with legislation to try to block it =
because the national association of broadcasting is huge and even =
[national public radio] is against it because everybody's trying to =
protect their territory. and we're currently planning a three-week tour =
for october called "honor the earth," where we go out and raise =
awareness around native american environmental issues. it's about =
environmentalism and cultural sustainability.=20

isd: in the past, musicians were leaders in youth activism. today people =
talk about apathy in college students and that goes hand in hand with =
pop music. even alternative musicians just talk about love and sex as =
much as 'n sync or the backstreet boys, and it doesn't get much more in =
depth. will something like this just go on or does the pendulum swing =
both ways?=20

ar: it's hard to say because now advertisers are so central to radio =
stations that they really gear their programming to the more mindless. =
it is the better as far as the advertisers are concerned, they say it =
fits their demographic better.=20

i think it's gonna get worse before it gets better. the way it's gonna =
get better is a few people are gonna hafta say this isn't cool and we =
have to break the mold and play some music. because there are a lot of =
people who are willing to make political music. a lot of the more =
underground hip-hop, alternative and folk is pretty political, that's =
why it's underground.=20

i'm constantly recruiting bands to play benefits and it is hard as hell =
to get bands to play benefits now. i have to keep going back to the same =
people, bonnie raitt, jackson browne, people from the '60s and '70s.=20

isd: do you think those guys who won't play don't care about issues or =
are they afraid it might hurt their careers a bit?=20

ar: i don't think it's gonna hurt their career, honestly. i think =
they're so busy playing a gig they're gonna make money at they don't =
want to take time to go out and do something.=20

some people are scared to take a stand, but i don't think it extends as =
far as "it will hurt my career," it's more like "what are people gonna =
say about me." they're just thinking about that and their image.=20

but even a band like rage against the machine, they're so political =
lyrically, but to get those guys to play a benefit, i mean, forget about =
it. it's hard.=20

isd: they do have the image that they would do a lot of benefits. they =
talk about issues a lot and they're pretty openly socialist.=20

ar: they're socialist, but they're within a complete capitalist =
structure.=20

isd: yeah, i get the irony. they do seem to make a lot of money out of =
being socialists. how do you guys pick and choose from all the issues =
out there, which ones you're gonna give your time to?=20

ar: we work with groups that are grass roots and the money usually goes =
directly to what they're working on rather than administrative stuff, =
that's our first litmus test. then it's issues that are relevant and =
timely, it's basically your liberal combo platter.=20

isd: how do you think the industry has changed for women since the late =
'80s?=20

ar: the late '80s with college radio was such a fertile sort of =
environment for getting airplay, anybody who was slightly underground =
had it easier, women or men as far as radio goes.=20

and then women had a great spurt during that whole lilith span when =
radio was really friendly to women. there's definitely a backlash right =
now. women in rock, it's just really hard and that used to be the salt =
of the earth for us, basically. it probably goes in waves back and =
forth, but it shouldn't be either way, it should just be that people =
have equal access to the airwaves -- period.=20

for us, if we had a good underground movement going in radio, it didn't =
matter whether you were a woman or a man; it was really accessible to us =

hey there,

thanks for your post,  amy is very interresting
on american skin,  it's brave of bruce springsteen to play that song in
front  of an
audience full of more cops.  if that's the case,
i'm not surprized he was booed.  but still i'm glad he's doing that song
there for the  cops to hear.

i would disagree with amy on cons,  not being "all that different"
taking their trademark harmonies coverring them up by overproduction
was a very big let-down which is why i don't even listen to  go, soon be
to nothing, peace tonight, cold beer and remote control,  they are way
overdone .  now i'm not totally dismissing cons because i do like some
of the
songs but that was a long time coming......about six months.

all in all i  really love what the girls do politically, eventough i do
wonder sometimes
if amy's  letting  her poltics go to her head.
(please don't flame me.)

peace
barb

a lot of people were reporting that he was, "brooooooced."  most of the
protesters just stood silently.
judge for yourself whether this is anti-cop:

american skin (41 shots)
bruce springsteen

41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots

41 shots and we'll take that ride
across this bloody river to the other side
41 shots they cut through the night
you're kneeling over his body in the vestibule
praying for his life

is it a gun?
is it a knife?
is it a wallet?
this is your life
it ain't no secret
it ain't no secret
no secret my friend
you can get killed just for living in your american skin

41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots

laina gets her son ready for school
she says now on these streets charles
you got to understand the rules
promise me if an officer stops you that you'll always be polite
never ever run away,
promise me you'll keep your hands in sight
is it a gun?
is it a knife?
is it a wallet?
this is your life
it ain't no secret

no secret my friend
you can get killed just for living in your american skin

41 shots

41 shots
is it a gun?
is it a knife?
is it in your heart?
is it in your eyes?
it ain't no secret
it ain't no secret

41 shots and we'll take that ride
across this bloody river to the other side
41 shots i got my boots caked with this mud
we're baptized in these waters and in each other's blood
is it a gun?
is it a knife?
is it a wallet?

imnsho, it's a tragic song decrying the violence, but there's no
finger-pointing anywhere.  still, i could see where the oversensitive
could probably misinterpret the whole "41 shots" refrain -- i mean, most
people still think "born in the usa" is a patriotic anthem.  :)

anyway, would anyone be interested in a listmeet?
who's even going to this show?
<<<snip>>>

yep & yep!  i'll be at the show and i'll be at the summerfest tomorrow by
about 2 or 3pm so i can catch michelle malone and hang out...  anyone going
to be there early like that?  and any ideas for a listmeet???  my suggestion
would be to meet at the soundboard for either the stage ig or michelle
malone is at...  i'll be at the black crowes show, so i'll be at the
amphitheater from 7pm - 10:30pm and then i'll be hopping on over to see ig.

so who else is gonna be there?!

i think the blanket and a gun line is in the vein of kid fears.  when we
were
kids, we felt that if we hid under our blanket we were safe from anything.
today, as adults, so many of us feel the only way to feel safe is with a
gun.
i think amy was just thinking about the the distance we travel to change
our
definition of safety.

hey all. long time no post. work has been hell, for lack of other profanties.
yea for the past three weeks ive been doing 3 -4 full time jobs. for the last
two my manager was out of town and we went through 5 temps so it was me doin
the job of five people and a temp here and there.

anyway, i love when songs come up on the list! i often wondered as well what
the refrences to sister was and now i have a greater insight. heres a stupid
question, so sorry for the ignorance, what is 'sister' referring to? i was
thinkin it wasnt persay her sister, rather, any female. we as humans are all
family, if you will. not to mention all us
gays/lesbians/transgender/transexual who are considered "family" as well!

anyway, hope everyone is doing great! have a great day.

uh, well...

let's do remember that it was cops that fired these 41 shots.  that's a
pretty direct finger point if you ask me.

imho, i am very glad that someone like bruce springsteen is willing to
use his fame and his influence to get the word out about what violence
has come to in this country.

hello, my name is adam black, and i am not a bootlegger, i am a trader of digital band recordings.  i am interested in trying to hook up with someone who has some dats or cd's who can make some digital copies (dat or cd)for blanks and postage.  if someone would prefer, i would also be willing to trade some tapes instead of doing the b&p i cannot currently make cd's, only dats.  anyone interested, let me know, and i'll e-mail my list webpage.
i have a digital audience recording of a 1997 lilith fair show :) i have the tracey chapman, f apple, p cole, and s. mcclachlan's performances from that show.  also hundreds of phish, dead etc....

this is interesting to me because i have a really different reaction to
cons. i mean, i do respect this opinion and and i understand what you mean.
i love all the trademark harmonies and the less-layered acoustic
sounds.  but i am really enjoying the new direction in the way this album
was produced, and ironically i was just thinking about writing to y'all
about it the other day. i really, really love to listen to cons with my
earphones. i always hear a new something in all those layers that is really
cool! each time i listen i might focus on something i hadn't heard before.
it is the ig album that makes me want to go off somewhere quiet to really
hear everything and enjoy all the sound ideas rather than just crank it up
in the car and sing along at the top of my lungs (though of course i do
that with cons as well...).   anyway, i can understand it if you don't
enjoy these sounds, but i'm actually hoping they eventually explore more of
these production ideas.  in the meantime i'll also look forward to the more
acoustic album they keep talking about ...
