afa calls on cbs to fire bryant gumbel

the american family association today called on cbs president & ceo leslie
moonves to immediately fire morning show host bryant gumbel over remarks
made on the early show on june 29.

gumbel’s remarks were made on camera at the conclusion of an interview
with family research council’s robert knight regarding the supreme court’s
decision allowing the boy scouts to exclude homosexual leaders. robert
knight had articulated a very traditional religious viewpoint regarding
homosexuality, and had just left the set, when gumbel allegedly referred
to knight as a “f***ing idiot.”  gumbel apparently thought his microphone
was turned off and the camera focused elsewhere when he made the comment.

"in this day of tolerance and diversity, mr. gumbel’s obvious intolerance
and bigotry is unacceptable. cbs should fire him immediately. there should
be no place at cbs for such intolerance and bigotry,” said afa president
donald e. wildmon.

wildmon noted that cbs joined other networks in recent public chastisement
of atlanta braves pitcher john rocker. “why would cbs be less vigilant in
highlighting the absurd comments of one of its own " particularly an
employee who has such a high profile as early show host gumbel? surely the
network must be embarrassed at such derogatory language used by the host
of one of their flagship programs. failure of cbs to act immediately will
lead the public to believe that they practice selective indignation,”
wildmon said.

wildmon also said, “if cbs refuses to fire mr. gumbel, we shall turn to
the advertisers which support his show and call for a boycott of their
products because it will show that they endorse such arrogance,
intolerance and bigotry.”

action needed

if you agree with dr. wildmon, please contact mr. moonves and politely let
him know that you are outraged over mr. gumbel's remarks.

us gays tie historic knot in midnight 'marriage'

by leslie gevirtz
brattleboro, vt., july 1 (reuters) - in the first few minutes of saturday the
small new england town of brattleboro made u.s. history when it issued the
nation's first same-sex civil union license.

kathleen peterson, 41, and carolyn conrad, 29, wore big smiles as town clerk
annette cappy presented them the sheet of paper that gives their five-year
union legal recognition and virtually all the benefits and responsibilities
of marriage.

''we didn't plan on being first,'' said conrad, a college dean who wore a
taupe spaghetti-strap, floor-length dress and carried a bouquet of mixed wild
flowers. ''but we wanted to do it as soon as possible and annette was kind
enough to agree.''

peterson, who works at a ski resort, wore black. ''we had our commitment
ceremony three years ago. that was the moral and spiritual ceremony. this is
the legal one,'' she said.

they made their way from the clerk's office, past about a dozen quiet
protesters holding signs that read ''only god gives peace & happiness,'' to a
small park across the street where some onlookers blew bubbles.

gathered around a candle-lit fountain, about 75 friends, relatives and
members of the public watched as justice of the peace t. hunter wilson told
the couple, ''by the powers vested in me by the state of vermont i join you
in civil union.''

one of the couples who helped pioneer the state law also entered into civil
union on saturday in south burlington.

it took lois farnham, 55, and holly puterbaugh, 54, less than five minutes to
complete the paperwork and pay a $27 fee for a license at the city clerk's
office.

farnham, a nurse, and puterbaugh, a mathematics lecturer, were among three
same-sex couples who filed a suit in 1997 that led to the enactment earlier
this year of the civil union law.

the simple ceremonies came after months of heated debate following a vermont
supreme court ruling in december that said gay and lesbian couples were
entitled to the more than 300 benefits, protections and responsibilities
including health care, inheritance and pensions, given to married couples.

the court left it up to the legislature to decide how to extend those rights.
after lengthy hearings, legislators chose not to legalise same-sex marriages,
but instead set up a parallel institution called civil unions.

vermont gov. howard dean, a democrat who is facing a tough re-election in the
fall, signed the measure into law in april. it became effective on saturday.

in denmark, norway, iceland, sweden and the netherlands same-sex couples can
register their partnerships in a legal recognition that approximates civil
marriage, but still doesn't go quite as far as vermont's new law.

after nearly 28 years together, farnham said ''it's about time'' she and
puterbaugh are able to form a legally recognised partnership. ''it's been a
long enough engagement,'' she said. ''it's nice to say holly is now my
spouse.''

town clerk cappy said she had received requests from seven couples -- half of
them from out-of-state -- for the civil union licenses on saturday. during
the year, her office issues about 250 marriage licenses, half of them from
out-of-state couples.

but those out-of-state couples who obtain civil union licenses will face
legal struggles in their home states before their status is recognised, legal
experts said.

''it's a principle of international law that as a general rule if a marriage
is valid where it is celebrated, it is valid everywhere else,'' explained
barbara cox, a professor at california western school of law and author of a
number of articles on same-sex marriage.

the challenge will come, she said, when the couple from california or new
york or oklahoma gets a vermont civil union license, returns home and demands
the same rights, such as survivorship, or hospital visits, that are
automatically granted to married couples.

''the vermont court ruled that their state law had to be substantially
equivalent to marriage. how can it be substantially equivalent if it's not
portable?'' cox said.

''and what happens if that vermont couple applies for federal benefits such
as social security?'' she asked. under the 1996 u.s. defence of marriage act,
civil unions may not be recognised, she said.

some 33 states have passed similar legislation that defines marriage as a
union between a man and woman and allows states to refuse to recognise
same-sex marriages.

both farnham and puterbaugh expressed confidence that other states would join
vermont in recognising same-sex partnerships. ''when they see the sun is
still shining and the sky isn't falling, it will be just a matter of time
before it happens elsewhere,'' farnham said.

the couple, who have an adopted teenage daughter, plan a private religious
ceremony later today.

<< supreme court nominations important
washington (ap) - more than two-thirds of registered voters say the kind of
supreme court appointments a presidential candidate would make will be
important in deciding how they vote, according to a newsweek poll released
saturday.

thirty-six percent said the appointments would be very important and another
37 percent said they would be somewhat important.

the positions on abortion likely to be held by the next president's supreme
court nominees will be very important in deciding the votes of 43 percent of
voters and half of registered women, the poll found. of voters surveyed, 62
percent said they favored the appointment of judges who would support the
abortion rights guaranteed under the court's landmark roe v. wade ruling in
1973.

in his presidential campaign, democrat al gore, who supports abortion
rights, has emphasized that the next president will likely appoint enough
justices to shape the court's decisions on the issue.

on other recent supreme court decisions the poll found:

49 percent of americans disagreed with a decision striking down state bans
on a procedure critics call ''partial-birth abortion''; 41 percent agreed.

56 percent agreed the boy scouts of america have the right to block gay men
from becoming troop leaders.

68 percent agreed with the court's refusal to block elian gonzalez's return
to cuba.

the poll continues to show a dead heat in the presidential race - in a
two-way contest, gore gets 46 percent and republican george w. bush 45
percent, with 9 percent undecided.

the princeton survey research associates poll of 752 adults, conducted
thursday and friday, has and error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage
points. >>

hey y'all....

thought i'd share this.....

at my retail day job there is one repeat customer who is extremely
homophobic and frequently launches into long anti-gay tirades, especially
since the people of vermont have shown the foresight to light the way out of
the dark ages.....

as luck would have it, i am usually the one who cashes him out and thus also
the beneficiary of his accumulated 'wisdom' - which i refuse to dignify with
a response.....

thursday afternoon, after a long spiel prompted by the supreme court's
ruling on the boy scouts matter, i left on my lunch break - when i returned
a half hour later, he was still in the store parking lot, haranguing another
customer - as fortune would have it, shaming of the sun was in my cassette
deck, and i pulled by them into my space just as emily was singing (at top
volume) 'it's alright if you feel that way, hate me cuz i'm different, hate
me cuz i'm gay.....'

i don't think i did a very good job of hiding the smile as i walked back
into the shop.....

the lord works in mysterious ways....

have a great and safe weekend!

my ups man is a beautiful person.  i know this because friday morning he
knocked on my door and handed me my tickets to see ig in eugene on the 19th.
(such a humanitarian, that guy)

anyways i'm really excited because i only got to see the girls once before
at the very last show of the very first lilith fair tour a couple of years a
go in vancouver british coloumbia.  i know this sounds kinda corny, but it
was truly one of the best, most memorable, and most special experiences i've
had in my twenty six years of existance.  and to think, it wasn't even a
*real* ig concert!  it meant alot to me.  it was really special because
jerry morotta and sara lee were also there, and i think that was the best
band linup they ever had.

i'll never forget that evening, standing there in the pouring rain, covered
in mud, trying to get just a glimpse of jerry just to see if he was wearing
a skirt! (like he did on the ppv special)  i remeber thinking that it
probably didn't matter though,  because amy probably wore the pants in the
family.  ;)

and to me, it really is a family.  when i think of ig, i think of more than
just amy and emily.  it's all the people that come together make a record
happen, or a live performance. and it makes me happy to think that.  gives
me that kinda warm fuzzy feelin.

i know, i know... i'm just rambling at this point!  but, it all brings me to
the next two questions:
1)   who's all going to the eugene show?
2)   and, does anyone know if it will just be amy and emily, or will they
have a band with them (and if so, who)

peace,
chris m. wilson

p.s.. if anyone is planning on booting the eugene show, (especially on cdr
or other digital media) please email me!  i can help duplicate cdr's and
could help set up a boot tree.

that sounds a whole bunch like the only time i've seen them... the last lilith fair of them all... pouring rain in edmonton. but singing closer to fine with a few thousand other screaming, soaking wet, energetic people was so incredible... and i'm seeing them again in less than two weeks! wahoooooo! which i owe to someone who posted concert dates. thanks!

ditto on the ig bumpersticker... also, does anyone know any interesting background on "i don't wanna know"? that song has really intrigued me lately... i've heard the version on 1200 curfews where amy says it's kinda a bar room brawl song... but that's all i know.

thanks terrific peoples. ;) happy sunday!

didn't amy co-write "i don't wanna know" with michelle malone a bazillion
years ago?  i don't remember where i heard that, but it was probably somwhere
really pbvious like one of the videos or in the liner notes.  also, i love
the song "faye tucker," but does anyone know any background on it?  is she
real?  if so, who is she?  if not, what does she stand for?  just curious...

on this bumbersticker issue...
i've been thinking about this for a long time (and also since i just sold my
car that had the bumpersticker that ya'll are talking about - the one with
their name in blue and a peace sign?  i can't believe i sold my car and had
to give that up!!!).

so, i had a question -- if one of us here made a bumpersticker and got it
all printed up and stuff, is that legal enough to do if we just sell it at
cost?  i just can't stand the ugly ones that indigogirls.com is selling.  i
don't want something dumb or fancy -- i just want it to say "indigo girls"
with a tagline like "it's only life after all..." or something below their
name.

i'm a designer by education/employment, and i would be more than happy to
get them printed up (after agreeing on a design that people liked) if it
didn't cost a fortune up front and wasn't illegal in some way.  i thought
perhaps someone here might have an idea about it.  any thoughts?

oh to have an ig bumper sticker on my car again...

yes, in the liner notes for 1200 curfews for i don't wanna know, amy writes
that "i wrote this song with michelle malone while sittin around a campfire
out west somewhere. i felt like running away so i did." emily writes that
"this is an old one - michelle and amy wrote it together. what a hootenany
song. the birchmore is typically a quiet listening club, so it felt good to
storm it a little. we didn't find this version until near the end of our
search for 1200 curfews song. when i heard it i knew it was a must. tiny
stage. tiny room. as face to face as you get."
the indigo girls played this with michelle malone in ames, iowa, this past
wednesday and it was so much fun to sing along with dance. what a great
song!

before everyone gets lost in happy thoughts about a bumpersticker... i do
believe that would be a copyright infringement (any band's name is
copyrighted either by the management or the recording label).  best to get
permission from russell carter before wasting your time on a project.

didn't rcm have some sort of problem with the last list shirt?

sorry about the nigc.the zine

that said are there any u2 fans here?

while cleaning out *more* stuff from college, i found an issue of propaganda (u2's official fan zine) from spring/summer 1997.  i like u2, but i am not as crazy about them as i used to be, so i'd have no problem with this.

in order to build my ig boot collection (i have a lot but have not been trading for a year or so), i am willing to trade the zine for a recent (high quality) ig boot (tape or cd-r fine).  anyway, anyone interested?  if not, i'll put zine up on ebay, so if you're interested, lemme know soon.

i guess maybe there's a little igc here:

for me...ani's little plastic castle (sometimes unbearably) reminds me of two

does anyone else have songs/albums that sometimes break there hearts to

also, tracy chapman's 'fast car', which of course is maudlin/a common 'our

hey,

i agree with the original post, their is too much overproduction.

however, each cd has been more and more produced as they have moved on.
nomads was more produced then indigo girls and rites had all those violins on
"ghost", all those drums and harmonicas on "chickenman", swamp was so
overdone at with songs like "this train"...

you see where i'm going with this.

come on now is overdone, i'm not too thrilled with that direction (which is
why we should all experiance a collective flutter of the heart knowing the
next one will be acoustic!) the harmonies and how they enhance the lyrics is
what made me love them. the way they sing two songs at the same time like on
"secure yourself". this what the indigo girls are to me.

but as far as the list of songs that aren't listened to; "go" has that great
break with "did they tell you it would come undone...."soon to be" and "
peace tonight" are really no more over done then "caramia" or even "reunion".

over all, lets get back to the two girls, two guitars and two voices that to
me, opened in my life chapter two.

probably more than you were asking for--but, i'm in the mood to write--and,
the "songs that bring back memories" thread is a great one.

so, it's longish--but, here goes....

as i'm sure everyone on the list can attest, most any indigo girls song has a
meaning to certain aspects of their lives.

i can safely say that the girls got me through college--and, through my first
real heartbreak--not my first as a female, but, my most painful and rewarding.

you see, i fell in love with my best friend--and, two days after i actually
realized this, he came out to me.

"love will come to you," and "ghost" would be the identifying factors for
this time in my life, as i struggled to come to terms with the heartbreak and
the ensuing struggle he and i went through.

i can't really listen to any "toad the wet sprocket" songs, either, without a
certain amount of bittersweet memories, b/c he came out to me the night we
went to see them in concert.  and, the entire two hour drive home, we
listened to their tapes over and over, as neither one of us really knew what
to say to the other one.

as i type this, he's taking a bath in my apartment.  you see, he's to be my
roomate, some 5 years later.

"power of two," and "you and me of the 10,000 wars" are our songs, now.
through the indigo girls and the soothing balm of their lyrics, and through
many struggles, tears, and fights, we are closer now than i ever thought we'd
be.  i always laugh--i wished to have him in my life forever--i just got him
in a different way than i bargained for.

we are the stronger because of it.  he is my touchstone--my heart--and, i
know that any relationship i have will have to measure up to the open,
honest, and healthy one i have with him.

so, yes, the indigo girls can touch me with a lyric--and, can still break my
heart with memories--and, like my best friend, they are in my life for good.

sincerely,

claudia

this is a really great thread, and i'm sure it'll prompt a response from
many of us...
i would have to say that ghost has had the most effect on me over the
years, over and over, it seems. to me this song is beautiful poetry and
very sensual. i tend to not meet people and start dating them, but to meet
them, develop a friendship, develop a crush/romantic feelings and then fall
in love with someone. then we become involved. this was the pattern for
some really wonderful long-term relationships i've experienced and this is
also how i met and fell in love with my husband
ghost has been the song i've listened to a lot during these times when i
saw these intense feelings developing and it was exciting and scary all at
once. i also listen to the song when a relationship falters or transitions
into something else from a romantic involvement. some of these
relationships have become friendships i hold dear, and i've learned
something from all of it, so there are no regrets. the song has remained a
constant and has applied to just about all my experiences.
other songs that have truly touched my heart and soul are love's recovery,
love will come to you, the girl with the weight of the world in her hands
and least complicated, and that's just to name a few, of course. but ghost
is the grand prize winner for sure : )
hope everybody has a happy fourth of july,
michelle

hiya!
like all of you, i have had many ig songs touch me over the years on many
levels.
the one that i have been thinking a lot about lately is "the girl with the
weight of the world in her hands".  i work in a large group home that houses
about 50 teenage girls.  this song really hits home for me as i watch these
girls experience so much pain and so many struggles in their lives.  i can't
imagine having to go through what these girls have gone through in their
young lives.
the song always moves me deeply.

peace,
~wolf

i think for me the hardest song to listen to is "keeper of my heart"
because of its relavence and proximity to the past year of my life.

but a song that always makes me smile to listen to would definityly be "get
out the map".  it always reminds of the plans my bestfriend and i are making
to go road tripping in a couple of years.  and will probably be the theme
song of that trip.

hello friends!

i have some boots that i'd be willing to trade for just one measely tape of
pete seager's (sp?) tribute 2nd cd -- the one with eve's letter to adam on
it.  i already have the whole set of this tribute, but i lost the 2nd cd
(the one with the girls on it) in the woods in texas working a forest
wildfire about 2 years ago.  so, please understand this is not unethical.
here are the things i have that you may like to add to your collection:

1.  boot of ig's 1998 visit to the 9:30 club in dc - one of the best ones!!
2.  half a boot of amy's visit on lounge 88 in atlanta
3.  boot of 1999's visit to charleston, sc - with michelle malone singing
wild horses with amy!

thanks!

let's talk about this song:

i just read michelle p.'s post about songs that touch our hearts, and she
said that this song was one of them.  why is that michelle?  please feel
free to elaborate.  this song didn't really touch me when i was a little
girl, when i first heard the tape.  when i first got that tape, i was
absolutely in love with the hammer and a nail song.  i couldn't really
understand cedar tree, so i didn't really pay attention to that song either.
songs that were ambiguous or unclear to a pre-teen or were at the end of
the tape were ignored until recently.  i reheard the girl with the weight of
the world on an old tape.  it then hit me so hard!  my mother has been going
through some tough and rough times.  she's lost her first love (my father)
to a rare disease, got involved with an abusive alcoholic man whom she left,
and has recently been able to tell her story to her family (my family really
doesn't want to listen to bad stories like hers).

i don't have any lyrics here with me, but remember driving my truck down the
dirt roads of texas listening to that song for the first time in my adult
life and realizing that that girl is my mom, and it can even be me.
admittingly, sometimes, i don't like to hear the song b/c it makes me think
of the women out there that are being abused and used like my mom.  isn't
that irony?

why don't the girls ever play songs from that tape?  nomads, indians,
saints???

actually, "indigo girls" is a registered trademark.
it would be a violation of the girls' trademark in
their name to make a bumpersticker that said "indigo
girls."

  best to get
> permission from russell carter before wasting your
> time on a project.

i don't think rcam would ever authorize such a
project. but realistically, i don't think anyone would
ever know or care.  trademark protection is to prevent
consumer confusion.  for example, trademark protection
gives the girls legal recourse if someone used their
name to sell something with their name on it that they
did not endorse.  i don't see an objection to making
some bumperstickers.  we've done it before with no
problem, so i say go for it.  if problems arise you
can always take it off.

ok, its not so bad.
i went to blossom music center tonight to hear the concert band and see
fireworks, and the moment i turned on the car, the radio guy said "and now,
time for the columbia music hour, and this week we have the jayhawks and the
indigo girls"
i was thrilled!

but then it occurred to me that i had to *drive* because i had non- ig nuts
in the car with me.  i had to drive out of range....
i never got to hear the whole thing- i heard 2 songs of theirs clearly, a
few bad, 1 really bad and had to give up on the last.

i heard jayhawks loud and clear though.

so what i'm wanting is a copy of this becuase someone has it!!

thanks!

well now let's see here. i have a chance to see
ig anywhere i choose for half price (my  brother works for northwest
airlines and can get me a buddy pass to a city of my choice.)

i'm seriously considerring, house of blues  west hollywood ca. (end of
july)  or  albany
new york.

i need as much info o places to stay with good rates,  transportation,
that are in close proximity
to the show (incase i eed a cab, or have to catch a bus), and the
airport.

i haven't decided, but  i'm leaning towardss hob.  whether i go there
depends on if i can find a good place.    i know albany is free, but
i  would give anything if i can have a somewhat
intimate setting, that an inside place offers.)

so if you live in hollywood or albany or know about those cities,
please contact me.

far be it from me to give a "me too," but this interview really kicks ass.
smart questions, smart answers, new information about daemon and amy that
i"ve never heard before.

and, so that this is not solely a "me too," songs that touch me:

the wood song.  when i was 25, i drove from utah to michigan, leaving
everyone and everything i knew behind to totally start over.  the wood song
was the theme of that trip, i played it every day.  it was totally cool.
still one of my favorites.

watershed:  helped me through some very difficult choices.

you and me of the 10k wars:  a moment of peace is worth every war behind us.

i have enjoyed reading everyones comments as to which ig songs touch
us....and i though i'd reply. my first question was, "i have to just pick
one?!"  but after careful thought and evaluation i have narrowed my choices
to 2. number 1 is ghost. besides the fact that it was written with such raw
emotion, i think many poeple feel comfort in this song because is pertains to
everyone and we are forced to empathize with others who have dealt with this.
we have all had someone we've cared about that has left an impression on our
life and when that bond becomes absent we are haunted by the thoughts of
their impact and what it had on us. all of us are ghosts to some extent....
number 2 is phiosopy of loss-- i think this is an example of what is on our
hearts with undefined answers and questions of the extent of human
compassions. for example-- this country was founded on freedom. the reason
people fled to america was to break free from the chains that bound us in our
lives...socially, religiously, and emotionally. everyone preaches "i have a
right to...." but at the same time we contradict ourselves  when we take a
stance on an issue that limits someone of oppisite beliefs. take same sex
marriages for instance-- i personally feel that all people should commit
their life to their partner regardless of their sexual orientation-- why
should it matter anyhow?  what a person does with his/her partner is private
and should should be their business...not the public or government. and since
same sex marraiges is a political confliction that would mean it is limiting
many people's "right to the persuit of happiness,"  which is a given right to
all citizens. the song has so many levels and points, that it hits the heart
(and inner activist) in us all. personally speaking i think that this country
has made a complete circle and is back to where it started. this country, for
the most part, has lost much of its foundation and its heart on freedom and
what it is......the doors should be open  wide for everyone!! anyhow i just
felt like sharing/venting. hope all is well with you guys! thanks for
reading!!
take care-- ac

cd) over the weekend and spotted an ig reference.  it's in his new book of
poetry/prose,  _one stick song_, in a section entitled "the warriors."
hmm, context is complicated, but basically alexie is talking about his
culturally constructed early infatuation w/white women and his marriage to
his wife, a hidatsa/ho chunk/potawatomi woman.  he says: "has my love (and
undeniable lust) for my wife 'cured' me of my lust (and undeniable love)
for white women?  no, of course not."  he talks of helen hunt, tori amos
and then says,  "i lost my breath when i first saw amy ray, one half of the
folk duo indigo girls, as she switched gender roles and played the big man
himself in a production of jesus christ superstar" (49).  he follows this
with a reference to jane pauley, who i usually don't think of in relation
to amy, lol.

for those who don't know him, alexie is well aware that amy's gay (or bi,
as she sometimes ids).  he often speaks out against homophobia in his
public engagements, which are kinda stand-up routines where he rips on
every aspect of the dominant culture.  amazing writer, run do not walk to
the nearest bookstore.

okay, i found a place that mass produces
bumperstickers.  for one color i could get
approx 225 for .66 each  plus 15.00 for them
to ship it back so ican pick them up..now before i get started i need to
know how many people would be interrested. i was thinking of making
something that says "ig rules!!!"  white on
blue.  and try to get it to look like this,

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                   ig  rules!!!!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i can't promise anything  but i thought that  the
mre colors i put on the more it will cost, and to be honest, it looks
like i would need to take orders before i pick-up the whole  purchae so
i can aford it. as of now  don't have the funds on my own. i would only
charge for cost value.

i could use all the pointers in the world, and if
anyone can provide graphics, let me know.

what do you all think?  any ideas? i thoght  ig
rules because it has a nice ring to it, plus there's no copyright
infringement.  but if you can come up with anythig else, let me know.

i'm the one who brought up the bumpersticker question (incase you were
wondering who started this), but, i only brought it up because i want a
sticker that i can design myself (or at least one that a designer designs!)
- one that has class and is elegant (unlike the official one they're selling
now).  and, i also want one that uses their full name (and not just ig).

so, my next step is to write to russell carter.  i know a lot of you might
laugh and say they'll never return my letter, and that may very well be
true.  but, i plan to write anyways.  i want to ask for their permission to
print a limited run to give away at cost (not sell!), while using the name
"indigo girls" on it.  and, i also want to make sure they know that all of
us are unhappy about the bumpersticker options they have officially and that
we wouldn't have the urge to break the law if they had good merchandise!
(ok, i won't be that harsh, but...).

so, i'm out of any other bumpersticker project unless i hear back from
russell carter.  :(  man, i don't want trouble with the law, i just want to
be proud of the sticker i ruin my car with!!!!

i haven't seen anyone else mention it, so here goes.

sunday night on foodtv they did a show called roadie chefs where they showed
the behind the scenes catering that goes on at concerts.  a large segment of
the show was about a non-profit organization "rock and wrap it up", if my
memory serves me right.  this organization is affilliated with lots of bands
touring around the country, and after the band has finished with their food,
the leftovers are wrapped up and delivered to soup kitchens in the local
area.  there are volunteers in many cities that deliver the food.

all in all it was pretty cool, thing, now for the igc......during this
segment, they interviewed both amy and emily regarding donating their food.
i was only half awake so i won't even attempt to paraphrase what they said,
but if you see it on another time, it was definitely worth checking out.  i
checked out foodtv.com to see if i could find when it might air again, but i
didn't have any luck.

back to lurking!!!

renee,

i am so sorry, i took your little baby project
away without realizing what i was doing.  i have
some very good ideas, and i would love to be a
part of the project so much.

other fans might want to contribute too and that way we can speak as a
list, and as a suggestion, you could tell russell  what we  want.  and
maybe he'll give us permission to put out more than just one idea for
fans to choose from.

i would like to work together. if you  want, however, i will just give
my ideas, and then bow out on the bumperstickers  maybe i can put my
ideas on buttons  for listees to wear at ig concerts?  (okay whoever
reads this feel free to chime in buttons privately.)  it's an idea.

i know how to do buttons too.

ok.. i think if we're going to do the bumper sticker thing, we should do it
right... i mean, does anyone honestly think the girls or russell carter are
going to have a fit if every car in the parking lot at a show has an
unauthorized bumper sticker on it? if we're just doing it at cost, how is
that different than trading bootlegs with art designed by one of us?

my point is that i think the copyright debate is silly :p someone design the
damn things and i'll buy 5.. (i have two of the peace sign ones and i think
i've only got one of the sots blue ones left..)

<<design the damn thing and i'll buy it>>

okay lisa, you're on.  renee can put hers
out when she's ready, and i'll put mine out when
i can too.

to do a run of 225  i need people, and most of all , the money first,
because that's the only
way i know how to finance my project.  i  n eed
to come up with 163.50  for just one color.  and
the button works won't just pick up ten at a time with an order of 225.
i'll have to pay it flat out.   sooooooo, how about those interrested
i'll give my address, and charge  cost value.  then  when  have enough
to do 225 or  enough for button works to do  run.  i will then order .
how doe that sound?

i want to be sure i'm not stuck with a  load i can't pay for. if anyone
has a a suggestion on how else i can avoid that problem let me know.

but if you just want a bumpersticker  point  blank,  email me , get my
address,  and  when
send the money .  i get enough to do a run, i will order.

i have an extra pair of tix for the july 15 seattle ig show...i'd like to
sell them as a pair, if at all possible, but will consider selling them as
singles.  i'd just like face value for them, which was $70 with the fees and
jazz.

anybody want 'em?  i'm going to be out of town from monday on and need to get
rid of them asap!

please reply to mismonger@aol.com.

just post an extract because i love gossip as much as anyone:

indigo girls: substance before style

*snip*

what's ahead for the indigo girls?

at 36, ray is thinking about having a baby.

''i can't make my mind up,'' she said. ''my brother has two kids, i have a
sister who has two kids, and i love them all dearly. but it's a big, huge
deal.''

she doubts sailers, who is nine months older, is interested in motherhood
for herself - but maybe for her partner.

''emily's in a serious relationship.''

while we're talking about bumperstickers and the like, i'd like to see
if there's any interest in a new list tee? someone proposed "melbourne
wrecking crew" as a cute idea for a shirt, so i came up with a little
design. please check it out at: http://www.indigirl.com/igc.html.

there's a way on the page to vote if you're interested in ordering a
shirt. please vote once for every shirt you're interested in. i know,
it's a pain, but it's the best way for me to keep track of these
things.

please note: this is not an order form, this is just a way for me to
gauge the interest level. if you are interested, please vote because if
it looks like we'll be wanting fewer than 150 shirts, i'm going to wait
until there's more interest.

thanks!

indigo girls: substance before style

.c the associated press

by john rogers

los angeles (ap) - mention the indigo girls' latest cause - boycotting south
carolina until it stopped flying the confederate flag - and one is likely to
provoke a surprisingly nervous chuckle from amy ray.

''i know, it just gets old to people, huh?'' ray laughs after a moment of
equivocating. ''they go, 'there's the indigo girls again. they can't just do
the music, can they?'

''it's like we've got political lesbians stamped on our foreheads,'' jokes
ray of the duo's commitment to sexual freedom, civil rights and the
environment.

these are not positions, she said, that have endeared them to the music
industry. ray and musical partner emily sailers have been nominated for a
handful of grammys, but have won just one, best contemporary folk-music
recording, for their 1989 debut album, ''indigo girls.''

but ray said they had the right - if not an obligation - to speak out about
the flag controversy.

''i'm a southerner, you know,'' she said in a voice that makes it clear that
she is abundantly proud of it. ''i'm fourth-generation atlanta.

''and, yeah, all my friends and i sat around and listened to lynyrd skynyrd
and drank beer with a rebel t-shirt on. 'til i was about 12 anyway. so i
understand that sentiment, i really do. but it's wrong. and you've got to
grow up someday.''

spoken, one notes, like a true indigo girl, whose music is filled with
sweetness and emotional understanding on the one hand and a realization that
it's a hard world out there and everyone should try to make it a little
better.

not that ray is complaining.

''we have a good life, i'd say,'' she said by phone from her georgia home.
she joked that her house in the woods outside atlanta is a place where she
hides during those rare periods when she and sailers aren't on the road.

''the music business gets old sometimes, you just get tired of dealing with
the same stuff over and over again throughout the years, the commercialism,
the
sexism,'' she said. ''but we've had a good life.''

when she's not on tour, ray stays close to home, running daemon, her small
independent record label. sailers is more outgoing, she said, and enjoys
entertaining friends at her restaurant in decatur.

''i'm more of a loner. but if i haven't seen her in about a week, i'll drop
by the restaurant,'' she said.

they met in elementary school more than 25 years ago, after sailers, a
connecticut native, moved to georgia with her family. they grew up solidly
middle class.

''we weren't really friends until we started singing together,'' ray said.
''she was a year ahead of me, and you know how that goes in elementary
school.''

those schoolgirl barriers fell and the indigo girls were born when ray
reached 16 and acquired all the respect and stature that come with a driver's
license.

''we've been through all the things you go through as a family: death.
marriage. people being born,'' ray said.

for a dozen years now, they have chronicled much of it on a series of
generally
well-received albums on the epic label, while building an ever-growing niche
of
fans with almost nonstop touring.

in songs about everything from junkies, bars and life on the road to love,
religion and politics, their music reflects their early influences, from bob
dylan to rem, woody guthrie to the clash, appalachian mountain music and
irish ballads to hard rock and neil young.

what sets the two apart from other duos is the sweet, soaring harmonies they
bring to almost all of their songs; a blending of voices usually found only
among sibling performers.

''emily's family was real musical,'' ray said. ''her dad is this incredible
composer of sacred music and a virtuoso piano player. she's from this, like,
very technically proficient musical family, and i'm from a family that just
loves music.''

though sailers picked it up naturally, ray said she struggled to learn to
play the musical scales. but with help from her older sisters, she persevered,
eventually becoming proficient on piano, guitar and other stringed
instruments.

when they started out, they were too loud for coffeehouses and too
folk-sounding for punk bars. so they found a musical home on the ''fern bar''
circuit.

the ''fern bar'' circuit?

''you know,'' ray laughed, ''those places with all the fake plants where
everybody goes to pick up girls.''

and that was fine, she said, because they only wanted to get big enough to
open
for suzanne vega. when they did that, they started looking around for a gig
far
away from atlanta. ''maybe in maine.'' they did that, too, going on to tour
maine and much of the world, playing with many of their musical heroes,
including young, rem, sheryl crowe, sinead o'connor, the grateful dead and
pete seeger.

what's ahead for the indigo girls?

at 36, ray is thinking about having a baby.

''i can't make my mind up,'' she said. ''my brother has two kids, i have a
sister who has two kids, and i love them all dearly. but it's a big, huge
deal.''

she doubts sailers, who is nine months older, is interested in motherhood for
herself - but maybe for her partner.

''emily's in a serious relationship.''

also, if anyone has seen this shirt at recent shows, tell me.

hkf's,

wanted to share something that you might have heard about already.  first
here's the quick summary:

june 30, 2000
20 minutes into their set at the roskilde festival earlier this evening,
pearl jam left the stage due to serious injuries to fans in the audience.  8
people were crushed to death and 1 other is seriously injured... as many as
25 others were taken to the hospital. our thoughts are with all parties
involved tonight, and with you the fan during this most tragic time.  [my
note: the 1 seriously injured also died as of yesterday bringing the count
up to 9]

next, please visit my site for more information and various links:

thanks for listening - i just had to share news on my other favorite band
with other music fans...

aloha everyone!

my name is brandon tavares and i am new to the list!  i live in kailua,
hawai'i - on the island of o'ahu.  i'm 19 years old, and i became an ig fan
just last year.  my cousin brought home a bunch of cds one day and asked me
if i wanted any.  she had the rop disc(no cover inserts or case), so i took
it.  i listened to it once, put it away for a couple months, then went back
and listened to it - i was hooked!!!!!  rop is one of my favorite cds!!!!!
i then bought sots which i totally love, and nis.  their debut album is
really good too(i bought that one as well).  i'm soon-to-get swamp and
strange.  i recently bought the watershed dvd which rocks - their videos are
awesome!  my favorite is touch me fall and hammer and a nail.  galileo is
pretty funny.

i'm on the search for some good quality social tour videos.  or, shaming of
the sun tour videos.  i currently own the sots great woods show and the new
york oct. 99 show on video.  those are the only 2 ig bootlegs i have.  if
you do have any, please e-mail me so we can set something up.

are the girls ever coming to hawai'i?  hehe, just thought i'd ask.  any
hawaiian fans here?  it'd be great to communicate with ya!

hi folks,

sorry to rain on the list project parade, but please review the
following guidelines before continuing any list-generated projects:

7.2. is there any sort of list merchandise available?  can i organize
to have some made?

<snip>
if you want to organize one of these projects yourself there are
certain legalities to be aware of.  in particular, remember that the
name "indigo girls" is a registered trademark and that most pictures
of amy or emily (including album covers) and all lyrics are under
copyright.  before you go ahead with the production of any list
merchandise make absolutely certain that you are not violating any
copyrights.

7.3. i want to organize a project on behalf of the list.  can i use
the list name in relation to my project?

before organizing any sort of list merchandise or community project
on behalf of the list you should first check that the list owners
are in favor of your project.  if you gain list owner approval you
may then solicit approval from the list.  if you gain list approval
you will be obliged to keep the list up-to-date with the progress
of your project.

if the list owners or the list objects to your proposal you may not
use the list address (indigo-girls@netspace.org) in any way relating
to your project, either in its physical design or when contacting
indigo girls' management regarding the project.
<snip>

many statements have been made about legalities and rcam not seeing or
caring about small list-generated projects...do not make this
assumption.

even with list owner approval, it is in everybody's best interests to
gain rcam permission prior to continuing with any project.

thank you.

bumperstickers.

love em or hate em, everyone's got an opinion. or is it an asshole? or both?

anyway, here's mine:

i love that there are folks on the list taking the initiative to do a
sticker, copyrights be damned. however, i'd be much more likely to purchase
(or bankroll even, ive been known to do sillier things) a bumper sticker
that said something more...um...peaceful and big-people than ig rules.
please do not get me wrong. i don't think it's a bad sentiment. i am just a
30 year old gal with an old car, and "ig rules" is something i would have
put on my nice new red shiny mazda in high school. at this point in my
life,it'd be kinda laughable for me to have such a raw sentiment slapped to
my barely-holding-on-bumper.

i'm much more inclined to go with a design like "a + e = ig" than "ig rules"
which seems a little 'young' for my taste and frankly, a little like the
stickers i see around here that say "the rock kicks my ass!" or "jeff gordon
sucks the big one". it's a little...hostile. like, if ig rules, *what* do
they rule? the musical universe? the kingdom of prussia? my little hamlet in
new hampsha?

just some food for thought kids. dont hate me cause im cynical.

luff,
sus

oh, so you have seen my car...<grin>
kidding!
i tend to agree with you on this.  i have one sticker that i found worthy of
riding on my bumper and that is a rainbow triangle.  the only other one that
has made it to the  inside of my back window (but i still do not feel
inspired enough to actually stick it on) is "xena for president".  i would
tend to decorate my car with something more along the lines of "a + e = ig"
rather than "ig rules".   i think you made some good points in your post.

so i've been doing a little work on my next bootleg offer inbetween buying a
house and other i-have-a-life-really things. here's what i have so far and
what i need to complete the work...

attack of the killer b-sides volume five

shepherd's bush '94 (or 'in with the out crowd' expanded) - the _whole_ show
(on 2 cdrs) with about half coming from soundboard sources (and not just
iwtoc) with the rest from a pretty good audience recording all blended
together for the best available concert experience.

complicated girls - upgraded - those nasty cuts and edits removed, some
soundboard recordings from the show included plus some backstage rehearsals.
hopefully some relavant and juicy bonus cuts also (like bmhawk acoustic - if
i can find the cassette!)

peabody's downunder - a nifty radio broadcast concert from '89

indigo originals - probably 2cds, although a lot does repeat from the early

recordings series, so...
this is where you come in: does anyone have decent recordings of these
tracks they can get to me (cd, mp3, cassette, etc?):
beauty to disaster (i have a copy, but it's v. poor, although i could
probably clean up the sound somewhat).
measure of me/the mountain top/*unknown* - as performed december 27 1998 at
eddie's attic

on and i'm still (as always, but it's worth a shot) looking for emily's solo
tape from the early 80s, and the great american music hall show from '92 -
complete confidentiality assured, naturally...

hey all:

first of all, as for the bumper stickers, sounds like a great
idea.  i personally would run it by the management just to
be safe.  russell carter himself may not get back to you but
he will forward it someone in the office and they will get back
to you.

the t-shirt -- love it -- want one!

the video of filmore - is it going to be available in stores or
do you have to get it on line?

songs that touch me -- wow!  i have a ton.  but, i know the
first one was love's recovery. at the time i first started listening
to the girls' music, i was trying to "recover" from a serious depression
which was sort of the aftermath of a personal crisis that happened
about 8 years before. even though it was noone' s fault, i felt so
alone and abandoned by all my friends and i had just turned 30
which made it worse. as i kept listening to the song i learned
that the "discovery", for me anyway, was that i had to learn to
love myself and be happy with who i was as a person, then the
rest would follow.  it is so amazing to me how a song can be
about something entirely different and still effect you the same way.

well, that's it for now
happy thursday

okay, things are getting a little confusing here.
i would like to do my own project because i have slogans i would like to
see bumpersticker.
i'm sort of confused, tara  i'm not sure..do you want to coordinate this
project,  or were you just putting  a suggestion?  ( not to be rude. i
just want to be clear.)

i'm thinking that since people are wanting to contribute  their ideas,
and designs. and since i
want to be sure my ideas get out, too that  that
those who are interrested in helping with designs can email me
privately.  then after like
three days, i will decide on the designs, and get back to the. list

then people who want  one can choose what they want &  can email me  and
i will give my address. then  i will wait for the money, and
then order.

that's a more organized manner, isn't it ?
i don't mean to offend anyone or ward anyone off,i am just trying to
make things less confusing.  if people email privately,  we would
not be taking up so much board space, and those not interrested don't
have to be subjected to a long 72 hrs worth of sigc.  you know what i
mean ?

have a nice day.

peace

yes, it was just a suggestion.  i in no way shape or form do not want

am i the only one who actually reads list admin notes??????  or the faq for
that matter?

has anyone gotten permission to do this yet?  from rcm or the list owner?
no?  so then why is there coordinating, etc happening on list?  i know of one
person who is quietly trying to contact rcm about this.  be patient & wait on
that response.  get permission, and then get excited.  until then please read
the most recent admin note, which was posted only last evening.

we got 3rd row emily side!  ticketmaster did some weird thing and bounced
both my roommate and i out a couple times for no apparent reason before
making the ticket pull.  (she and have adjoining offices w/diff phone
lines, so we were both trying.)  i was really going nuts because the tix
went on sale a minute or two before ten and we would have had an unreal
pull.  third row is great, but i can't let go of that little voice that
tell me i might have been sitting in amy's lap had those first two tries
worked.  :-)

this is my  separate little project.  and i don't consider it a list
project, i'm not using the idigo girls name, or studio done pictures of
them,
so i don't see anything wrong.

the way i see it this is no different from tara, neil, jude doing thir
boot projects, without  rcam for that  matter. so i don't see any
problem with going ahead  if you want to wait go ahead..

hi jen ,

just some reassurance of my intention s here
with the bumperstickers.

1)  if i use any photographs they are not ( irepeat not) going to be
official photos, they will be from my own photos. or someone elses,
but they won't be studio.  there's no copyrights
on home photos (at least not mine.)

2. i do not intend to use the indigo girls name without russell carter's
consent.

3. this is not something i consider to be a list project....i'm not
using the list name or nothing
it's no  diffrent from jude and neil and tara do
with their boot projects.  i'm only charging cost value.  plus it
spreads interest in the girls.
i just want to use the list to get the the word out.
it's my own project, and i would take full responsibility if  anything
goes wrong.

okay?  what do you say?

peace

sorry for the nigh but i know a lot of you people out there are fans of
ellen.  here is just a little tidbit i found about her.  you may or may not
already know this.

"after i lost my show, i simply retreated. for a while, i didn't watch tv, i
didn't open a magazine. i thought maybe i'd never work again in show
business. i figured i'd do something with animals, in the country!"

so says ellen degeneres, remembering when she was the cynosure of every eye,
the butt of every comic's joke, the world's most famous lesbian, whose
coming out sparked a firestorm that threatened to overwhelm what she really
was -- a marvelous, adept, comic actress. today, three years later, ellen is
still happily cohabitating with anne heche, "the most honest person i've
ever known in my entire life," and she is re-emerging as a touring stand-up
comedienne. this culminates at the beacon theater on july 13 and 14. these
shows will be taped by hbo for airing on july 23.

hey,

i've just starting picking up guitar and i'm working mostly on chords but
just all sorts of basics.  from looking around at tabs i was having
trouble finding some good songs to try learning.  i didn't know if
anyone here would have any recommendations for what songs wouldn't be too
difficult to try to pick up.  any ideas?

sorry, i forgot to paste my lil news bit on here! here it is! have a
wonderful weekend!!

marching for gay rights in the boy scouts
organizers of a rally at the baltimore headquarters of the
boy scouts of america say the event was the first of
several demonstrations that will beheld in other cities, to
protesting the group's exclusions of gays as members and
leaders. scouting for all -- a gay rights group based in
petaluma, calif. -- helped organize the baltimore rally, and
is planning a national day of protest on aug. 21 at scouts
headquarters in san francisco, houston, dallas, new york and
several other cities. the rev. kenneth t. smith -- an eagle
scout and a minister in rockville. md. -- marched with some
65 other people at the baltimore rally. he told the
washington post: "i'm sending my eagle award badge back to
boy scout headquarters in irving, texas. i can't keep it
under these false pretenses." marchers carried signs saying,
"bigoted scouts of america" and "stop teaching hate." the
rally was mounted in response to last week's u.s. supreme
court decision upholding the boy scouts policy banning gays.

um. i like your idea but this part is a bit worrisome to me. what if you
don't like the tara lane design that i (and others) really seem to like?

can you put all the deisgns on a site somewhere and folks can vote?

i respect your desire to get your sticker printed, but if folks don't like
it as much as another design, it doesn't make much sense to get lots of them
printed, does it?

clue me in ifn im missing something.

this isn't a list project, no different from  people offerring boots.
it's my solo project, if you don't want the sticker, then don't order.
it's that simple. besides 'i'm, not even going to order until i get
enough people who like the design anyway.

peace
barb

hello all-- first of all the bumper sticker sounds like a good idea. in fact
i saw one not too long ago that said, "on the eight day god created the
indigo girls." of course this is so true and it totally made me smile! :) i
think i might have asked this before but if anyone has a nashville river
stages 2000 boot i would really love a copy. please e-mail me if you have
info or would like to make a trade. thanks so much! y'all have a great day!!
peace and music-- ashley
