hi fellow ig listers!  apologies to baigls who are also on the "big
list"; you'll be receiving two of these!

i am finishing up my final year in pa (physician assistant) school and
need to do a research paper.  realizing that women who identify as
lesbians have some specific health care needs, i want to study something
that might make a difference to my community.  i'm conducting a survey
of women who identify as lesbian regarding their health care.  it's not
very long and can be emailed back and forth.  if you email me privately,
i'll send you one.  if you have any friends or acquaintances that are
not on in the list, i'd love to hear from them too!  the more people who
respond, the more accurate the results!

thanks in advance!  i really appreciate the help.  maybe one day you'll
have improved health care because of it!

indigo girls honor the earth
updated 05:44 pdt wed, aug 30 2000
amy ray and emily saliers - the indigo girls - have made native american
issues their own for many years, backing up their support with more than 45
benefit concerts for the honor the earth campaign since 1993.
they are adding to that total this fall, bringing along bonnie raitt,
indigenous and special guest joan baez for a series of four honor the earth
benefits in montana.
the tour launches september 30 at the shrine in billings before moving on to
great falls, bozeman and ending in missoula on october 4.
honor the earth - which counts buffalo protection and restoration among its
prime projects - reports that state and federal officials have killed more
than 2,500 buffalo outside yellowstone national park over the last four years.
the indigo girls have raised more than $465,000 over the years for the
group, which has distributed grants to 65 native american groups for
environmental defense, sacred land protections and restoration of sustainable
communities.
"as non-indians, we cannot sit by silently and watch the continued
destruction of native communities," the indigo girls said in an open letter.
"the basic issues of human rights, justice and our own survival are
ultimately at stake."
in addition to the honor the earth benefits, the indigo girls will stay on
the road through october, stopping at a number of colleges. the tour
coincides with the october 3 release of a 16-track indigo girls collection
titled a retrospective.

hi,

all of the tapes from the last newbie offer should be well on their way to
me, so it's time for another (i like to space them out).

the deal is the same as the last one;  you get to choose between:
color me gray (60mins)
blue food (60 mins)
tuesday's children (60mins)
and
purple parrot (90 mins)

i'll take the first ten people.

:-) karen

ps- if you're going to e-mail me telling me that you're interested, be sure
that you can send your stuff out by next tuesday (the day after labor day).
more details will come if i can take you.  :-)

hey y'all,

the only good part about adding another digit to the age column is the fact
that i get to celebrate with some great musical friends....

this year's gathering at nietzsche's, 248 allen st, buffalo ny at 8 pm on
sunday, september 3 promises to be one of the biggest ever.  among those
expected:

katie miller -  http://www.mp3.com/katiemiller
lea prentiss - http://www.mp3.com/leaprentiss
rose bond - appalachian style singer-songwriter (like iris dement, gillian
welsh)
mike maffei and kim kerns - folk harmony duo
ed hart - traditional folksinger
kearney fitzpatrick - classic blues singer/guitarist
kathy moriarty - ethereal singer-songwriter
mari anderson - singer-songwriter (reminds me a bit of mcc)
marty peters - claptonesque guitarist/vocalist
david baldwin - is he my son or eddie vedder's?
ray lorigo and ann janish - celtic folk with jazz influences
tom fenton and joanne fahey-fenton - john hiatt meets joan baez
jessica grant - http://www.mp3.com/jessicgrant
russian hands & roman fingers - or is it tom waits?
pamela ryder - http://www.mp3.com/pamelaryder

if you're within driving distance, i guarantee a good time will be had by
all.  $3.00 at the door covers all.

i will also be celebrating the web release of 2 cds via mp3.com's dam music
program.  the first, titled outside - looking in, features mostly uptempo
songs in a variety of styles, plus a couple of smoky blues numbers.  katie
miller guests on two live tracks, and leah zicari joins us on bass for slow
ridin', a funky, sexy number i wrote a few years back....

the second cd, full circle round (ig reference intended) is mostly
autobiographical, and features my most requested song, wish i didn't love
you so much and wyoming skies, written in the aftermath of the matt shepard
tragedy.  everything was recorded live - guitar and voice into a single
microphone  - the only overdub was the lead guitar on wyoming skies - the
nietzsche's tracks are soundboard recordings....

thanks for your indulgence....

pollstar is nice, it can keep you updated when your favorite artists add new
dates to their tour, if you set up a notify for them. here's the indigo
girls's

not sure which date is new.

hi all,

on it, and to see if i have an lp worth leaving the wrapping on, tell me
what ya think.  i just bought a swamp ophelia lp off of ebay, yes i know,
but it was only $10, but it has a sticker on the front of it that says
"limited edition lp inside - personally autographed by indigo girls"  so of
course i am dying to open it.  is it really personally autographed or just a
copy of autographs.  should i open it or not?

i'm a co-leader for a troup of brownies, and i really want to play
"wild, wild party in the ...." and posibbly the "pooh.." song for my
girls.   if any of you have the music to it and a cover (a good
recording) of ig doing it, could you please, please, please get in touch
with me?  i know the girls (in my troup) would love it.  consequently, i
decided that although "love of the common people" would be easy, they
already have really easy songs to sing along with me playing the guitar.
and i think that song is not appropriate b/c of the reference of daddy
buying things....some girls don't have daddies.  i gues i could change
the song's lyrics, but i can't think of how to do that.

actually i think it'd be a great idea for some folks to put together a
childrens' tape of ig songs.  i would help you out if you did by sending
you a free northwest georgia girl scouts calendar for your trouble.

write to me.  i know you'll feel good about it.!!!!!!

cold beer single available - i picked it up at sam goody @ the the

does anyone with the promo have the ability of putting the extra tracks not

missing: autographed ig green guitar.

date: stolen from my broken-into silver camry parked on 40th st.,
philadelphia, friday 9/1/00.

details: the guitar was my birthday gift from my brother. the guitar is
not in any condition to be played - the frets are worn and the bridge
needs to be replaced. the only commercial value to it is that it is
autographed by amy ray and emily saliers (the sentimental value is much
more but i'm sure it, along with my violin, wasn't stolen for that
reason). the guitar is painted a unique light green color. the police
doubt that it will be found. i'm hoping that it will end up in the hands
of a kind ig fan who will let me know its whereabouts. you can email
information to me at kshucks@juno.com or fax me at 775-845-9805.

thanks - i will resend this message periodically in the hope of receiving
good news eventually.

ps please post this to the newsgroup too if you get the chance. thanks.

sincerely,

ah finally at long last!  i was able to get a hold of someone  who
canprint the bumpers for a reasonable price!  buttonworks was going to
charge $610.00 total, that's why i really wanted
to  wait to seewhat i could come up with at northern sun !!

i have decided to have  the  "what would amy and emily do" changed to
black on white, so i can  get a deal on the price!  then the total cost
would be 376.25 . that's how much  need to come up with. the bumpers
will be $4.00 each.
please send me a sase please. i will not
be a happy camper  if i have to write everyone's
address, and buy more envelopes, postage and
all.

i  would accept cash or money order, ( i don't want to risk getting a
bad check.)

you can send your payments to:

shame on you acoustic 99, shame on you & brown eyed girl, and mystery

um...  forgive me if i'm wrong, but isn't one of the main features of a
debit card such that you can't spend more than you have?  i mean, if
it's a true debit card, it can only debit what you actually have...

i don't believe in credit cards, either.  haven't had one since i was
18, and don't plan on getting one, either.  but i'd be dead without my
debit card.  it's not quite as groovy as cash (my favorite!), but it's a
damn sight better than buying money orders all the time...

hey y'all!

i got live at the fillmore!!!  i was not about to play around with cdnow or
artistdirect (on back order at both places and i am very impatient when it
comes to new ig!).  so anyway, i had borders order me a copy just in case.
well, my copy never came in, but every borders store near me ordered one copy
of the vhs version (i didn't check on dvd cause i don't have a dvd player).
so if you're still looking for it, try your nearest borders.  you may also be
able to order it off their website (it could be on back order there as well,
who knows!) as well.  also if you live near a tower records, give them a ring
as well.  i know that the tower near my house ordered a few copies.  happy
hunting!

i know a bunch of people who are fed up with artistdirect for various reasons
(a lot of people were mad that they didn't get the "limited edition" go
single.  i don't think it's really a "limited edition" because i found it a
while back at ameoba in berkeley.).  i have had no problems with them, but it
is annoying that the latf is on back order.  i just want them to post those
"soon to be announced" tour dates!  auggg!

also, barb, is there a deadline to order bumperstickers?  when is the payment
due.  and what ever happened to the a+e=ig design (tara's)?  i wanted to
order them both.

off to watch latf!

hi all - thought you would want to know the status of that wine x issue
with emily on the cover.  btw, while on my quest to track down said issue,
i picked up the previous copy which is still on the stands.  it really is a
great magazine!  i have already sent in my subscription.  i have always
liked wine, but never felt comfortable when ordering a bottle of wine,
doing that tasting thing and telling the waiter/sommelier that it was
fine.....  does anyone take the small sip from that first ounce poured and
spit it out going yech!!!!  take it back!!!!   anyway, the magazine does
not cater to that type of wine aficionado....  for example, one of their
wine reviews says the following:
la poussie
1998 sancerre
sancerre controlee - france $24
a geologist with a hooker -- minerally, floral and tart

oh well, i digress - here's the response to my question as to when the
issue will hit the newstands:

hey,

for those still having trouble getting latf, it's not on back order at
amazon.com

a funny little story about amazon.com:  a while back, someone was complaining
about how amazon.com gives recs for other music.  i think the person was
wondering why amazon.com reccommended people like melissa etheridge (sp? i'm
not into her) when they look up something about the indigo girls.  ok, so i
looked up latf, and that, combined with my previous purchases prompted
amazon.com to reccommend a spinal tap music video!  ummmm???  anyway, i was
laughing.

ok, i'll shutup now.

oh, and the description for mark west merlot:

well, after the worst work day i have ever had, my
only salvation was to run to the hmv store (and i mean
run) and buy my video.  the minute i got home, i put it
in my vcr.

i'm not quite sure if i love it, but i like it.  i really need to
watch it a few more times, because given the day i had, i
probably didn't get into it as much as i normally would.

i loved the interviews. i especially liked the instrumental part
in scooter boys (here, here, carolyn levall(?) ) and the part
in the beginning where they show the band.  but there was one
part in scooter boys, toward the end, where emily seemed like
she wasn't sure where amy was going with the ending, so she
kept watching for a cue.  i also loved phillosphy of loss.

i'm going to try to watch it again tonight (hard to do when the vcr
is in the living room).

happy wednesday (oh god, it's wednesday already?)

hi guys! how is everyone in indigo land? i was reading us weekly nd there is
a pretty good article on melissa ethridge-- it discusses her comming out, her
marriage, and politics. it is a really good artice-- but i got to
thinking/wishing-- how'd i'd love to see our girls featured in a similar
publication. i mean-- who is more polictically active than amy and emily?
just open the back cover of cons and read just a few of the orginizations and
causes they support!! and the list goes on and on from there!! <we fans are
so proud and aprecitave!> anyhow with election time comming closer a friend
and i were thinking abou how kick ass is would be to see amy ray's name on
the ballot!! one day.....    anhow pick up the mag if you'd like a good quick
read. have a great wednesday!!! take care-- ash

i called the chicago theater to ask about onsale information.  according to
the woman who i spoke with yes, it is pretty certain that they will play
there on the 17th of october, but as of now, the date is still unconfirmed.
she suggested that i try calling back tomorrow.  i also checked with
ticketmaster.  they didn't know anything (as usual).  i'll try the theater
again tomorrow and keep you posted.  if anyone hears anything different,

popped it right in my dvd-rom drive, and proceeded to be slack-jawed and
light-headed for the next 91 minutes.  i love this one--though personally,
that damn chandelier that keeps showing up in the long swoop-down shots was
kind of getting on my nerves.  i realize that dvds are supposed to have
really nice, clear pictures, but i kind of didn't really want to be reminded
of it by a chandelier, you know?  ;)

i was very happy to see "land of canaan" on there, as well as "get out the
map."  loved "scooter boys"--it's not one of my favorite songs (so no,
chiclet, expect no retribution from me), but that was a pretty awesome solo
emily ripped into!  the ending of it, to me, felt like one of those moments
where amy got really caught up in the energy and the excitement.

i was a little bit disappointed in "shame on you," as my memory of that song
from the second show at the wiltern last year includes an extended solo by
amy.  (i remember this, because i noticed that emily had put her hand behind
her back and had a cute, goofy grin on her face.)  not disappointed enough,
however, to really detract from anything.

the interview segments were a bit on the sparse side, but certainly
insightful.  it was very cool to get to see footage of the band and of
sulli.  did anyone else get flashes of "watershed" deja vu at the shots of
a&e writing up the setlist over dinner?  i know this was new footage, but it
gave me eerie flashbacks to the previous video.

overall, definitely worth it--this captures the electricity and power of
their live full-band shows, and there are some fantastic moments here.  i
think the phrase "closeups of amy during compromise" says a lot!  emily's
growing versatility with the electric guitar is displayed nicely.  the whole
thing is just a lot of fun.  (probably an understatement, but i'm still awed
by my first viewing.)

countdown to clemency - free leonard peltier!

now is the time to act!

if there was ever a time to get involved in the effort to free leonard
peltier, it is
now. leonard peltier is an indigenous rights activist who has been unjustly
imprisoned for over 24 years, despite the total lack of evidence against him.
he
was targeted because of his key role in the american indian movement.

since leonard peltier's trial, evidence proving his innocence has been
obtained, forcing
the government to admit that they do not know who is responsible for the
crime he was
convicted of. despite this, he remains behind bars, his chances for freedom
growing
   slimmer with each year.

leonard peltier will soon be 56 years old. his health is deteriorating and
life in prison is
becoming more and more difficult to endure. his court appeals are exhausted
and his only
chance for a near future release lies in the hands of president clinton,
whose last days in
office rapidly approach. our voices must be united and loud enough now, to
both drown
out the fbi's disinformation campaign and convince the president to do the
right thing by
   setting leonard peltier free.

you can help. it might not seem like much, but a call to the white house
comment line a
week will help us flood the president with phone calls of support. the number
is:
202-456-1111. have your friends make the call once a week too!

try to call on your region's designated day:

        northeast call on mondays
        southeast call on tuesdays
mid-west and international call on wednesdays
        northeast call on thursdays
        southwest call on fridays.

want to do more? we encourage you to get more involved in this emergency
effort to
gain leonard peltier's long overdue release. plan to be at the countdown to
clemency
march in new york city on december 10th, which is human rights day. educate
yourself
and others about the case. organize awareness and fundraising events to help
strengthen our call for justice. it's now or never folks. please visit our
web site and stay
in touch with this year's developments at www.freepeltier.org. we need your
active
   participation.

"what should i say when i call the white
   house?"

   tips from the lpdc:

1.when you call 202-456-1111, you will get a recording. press the #0, and
you will
skip the recording and be immediately transferred to a live operator.

2.you will not have much time to speak, so be ready to make a short and
firm, but
respectful comment. here are some examples:
"i agree with rev. jesse jackson, amnesty international, and
numerous
members of the us congress that president clinton should grant
clemency to
             leonard peltier."

"i believe that president clinton should grant executive clemency
to leonard
peltier. it would be an act widely respected and remembered by
millions."

"i am calling to urge president clinton to grant clemency to
leonard peltier.
doing so would begin an important healing process for native
peoples of this
             land."

"i strongly urge president clinton to grant executive clemency to
leonard
peltier, whose conviction was a result of major governmental
misconduct."

and if you want to write letters on leonard's behalf, you can send them to:

you're right about "daniel" being elton john's.

but ig's "danny's song" was written and originally performed by kenny
loggins. yes, anne murray made "danny's song" famous, but she has never
recorded a song that she penned herself. she jokes that she's too lazy to

did y'all see southpark, the movie?  in it, someone is talking trash about
canada, and refers to her as "that bitch, anne murray."
later, the prime minister of canada protests that the canadian government has
apologized for bryan adams on several occasions.
i didn't get the anne murray thing, maybe it's that she is so nice, and they
were being facetious?
hm.

while i, too, much prefer singer/songwriters to cover artists, i must say
that anne murray has a wonderful voice. that was the draw for me. the voice
is just as much an instrument as a guitar or violin.

and yes, she would be the anne murray mentioned in the southpark movie. she
was the first canadian artist to make it big in the states.

yeah, she is a very prolific singer. she loves being in the studio. she must
have like 40 or 50 albums. crazy, huh?

i just happened to catch the girls on the queen latifah show today,
too.  i didn't know if it was a rerun for sure, but i assumed it was.
anyway, my roommate was flipping channels and i'm so proud of him for
recognizing the girls and yelling at me.  i just caught the last half of
go, but it was cool.

now i'm happy.  of course, i've been on an indigo high since i found out
honor the earth is coming to both lawrence and kansas city.  :)

have a great day!

maybe i should have said "mainstream artist"?

i'm not well versed in neil and joni history, so you can correct me if i'm
wrong, but i think that back in the 70's and early 80's mainstream radio
more readily embraced anne. she won a number of grammys.

hey gang -

to all of you who have ordered (and paid for) your t-shirts, thanks
again! i placed the order this past friday (i had to wait until enough
orders had been paid for that i wouldn't get stuck footing the bill). i
would imagine the shirts should be here within the next 3 weeks, then
sent out within a week after that.

i will email again once i have a more definitive e.t.a. :)

take care -
amy
