well, joni and anne both came out with their first albumns in 1968. neil's first with buffalo springfield was in 1967, a year earlier but not a solo effort.

wasn't anne supposed to sing "blame canada" on the oscars but couldn't because of a schedule conflict?

i think she's great!

hello everyone,
i don't post often, but had to jump in on the canadians topic.  mitchell did
have her first album come out in 1968, neil young was with a band called the
rockets which had an album out in 68 also, but did not have a solo out until
69.  i don't recall alot about grammy awards, but i do know mitchell won a
grammy for the song down to you, off the court and spark album released in
1974.  i think she won in the best orchestration category.  i like anne
murray also, but for different reason than i do joni mitchell, or  ig.  just
wanted to throw in a few facts.

have a great evening

so,

i have to admit that with the start of school and all, i hadn't been keeping
up with list mail, and wasn't keeping up with the relative scarcity of latf.
yesterday night, my gf and i blithely hopped in the car and headed into the
city (madison, wi.)

our first stop was the local feminist bookstore.  they didn't have it, hadn't
heard of it, and would order a few the next time they put out an order.  ok,
so i really wanted to buy it from there, but i had to have it that night.
(not to worry, i'm sure my gf and i spend upwards of $1000/year there, [and
we're kinda po', so what does that tell you about our 'essential items' (;]
so i didn't feel too bad about heading next to a
mega-omni-blood/independent-bookstore-blood sucking media stores.)
we headed to the westside barnes and noble (i know; gag. bunns n noodle. :p)
the girlie in the music section looked at us blankly when we mentioned 'video
tape', and said "oh, we only carry dvds."  and, of course, they had a copy on
dvd, but we don't have a player.  and this is like the second largest b and n
in the country.
not yet deterred, we next went to best buy.  no dice.
finally, we stopped at the borders' (bounders) back nearer to campus.  they
didn't even have a music section, really.
by this time it was after 10pm.
so, to make a long story short, i didn't get it.  and all the websites
(amazon, cdnow, artistdirect) seem to have it back-ordered.
sigh.
this may be a good time to just buy a dvd player.
:p

well, i finally got a chance to watch latf again and
now i love it.  at first i wasn't crazy about it, but i
was a little out of sorts.  wow, i was a little worried
about myself for a minute there - i mean, since when
do i not love everything the girls do?

when i first posted i mentioned how impressed i was
with the solos in scooter boys.   whoops, i made a
boo boo -- it was shed your skin, not scooter boys.
there's a part in it where caroline goes crazy on the
cello - i love that part.

there's only one minor detail in the video i can do without--
that blessed chandellier (as sharon mentioned).

happy friday -- have a great weekend.
(btw-next weekend i'm going to see my boyfriend, dan fogelberg-counting the
days)

i watched about half of it - i have personally seen better concerts and i
dunno, probably from a videography standpoint, i think the editing is a
little too fast, but the music sounds great (and there are some songs from
the kbco session, very wierd segment, but i liked it.)
sister and compromise really sound great.

i dunno - seems very wierd that so many people are having problems buying
it - i got my copy at the local indie record store - haven't listened to it
yet, a friend dropped off 3 gigs of mp3's - 1.3 gig of that is bootleg ig,
so my live fix is pretty well saturated.

and jess klein played my hometown tonight - so i'm blissed out listening to

and she won her first of four grammy's in 1974 for "love song."

hi everyone,

sorry for the nigc.

but i was just looking through old mail and came across a discussion on the
list from early this year.  part of it was about a speech about how if you
want to live in a world where you can have your same sex partner's photo
on your desk at work, then you should put that photo on your desk,
etc.  the speech was made by tammy baldwin at the millenium march and i was
wondering if anyone knew of a copy of this speech on the web somewhere?
thanks heaps.
cheers,

i cannot help but reply to this (besides, it's a break from an otherwise horrid day).  i've got to agree.  one of the primary reasons i listen to indigo girls, are the lyrics to the songs.  it's why i like dan fogelberg. i used to say of him - each of his songs is a short story.  the work of amy and emily is very similar.  there is meaning...there is message.  there is self-respect and hope.  and it is delivered by those who understand intrinsicly the message that they wrote in the first place.  they are best able to deliver it.

in a journal/book that i'm writing for my nieces, i wrote "find a musician who writes their own music for there you'll find joy."  it is a complete package...not just a little of this and a touch of that.  you simply cannot compare "go" or as a better example "power of two" with "baby, hit me one more time." (shudder)

well, i had best get back to work.  <sigh>

daemon comes of age:
amy ray and the birth of indie industry

by brenda kahn

when amy ray started daemon records, her aim was to stay connected to the
independent underground, a community that supported her early on. there are
few jobs more grass roots than running an independent record label, and amy
has managed to maintain a career as an indigo girl while spearheading daemon
for over a decade.

amy's personal experience with the atlanta music scene set the tone for her
philosophy at daemon. "i came from a community that was diverse musically.
people were really supportive of each other." the label is artist driven
(and artist run), set up to create "a not for profit entity, a vehicle for
discovering and nurturing underground talent that was, in amy's opinion,
ready for wider recognition." the bands signed to daemon are chosen solely
on the integrity of their music. the core of the label is a staff of three
including andrea white, the label manager, stacey singer, daemon's publicist
and carla scheri head of retail and promotion.

listening to the cds and reading through the bios of bands on the daemon
roster makes me realize the scope of a decade. the first signing was the
punk/pop rock outfit, ellen james society in 1990. "ejs" set the tone for
daemon as a supportive force in the atlanta underground. early signings
reflected the diversity of the southeastern sound. singer/songwriter kristen
hall, who later signed to high street records, was the second signing. james
hall's debut solo album, described as "bowie-esque glam-rock" was released
on daemon in 1993. hall later signed to geffen and put out the 1996 release,
pleasure club.

other artists under the daemon moniker include holly beth vincent, atlanta
singer michelle malone, singer/songwriter/performance artist grady cousins,
"reverb soaked art-a-billy" band the rock-a-teens, a live solo-acoustic
recording by danielle howle, pop/rock band lift, country/folk artist terri
binion, garage band three finger cowboy, dance-popsters ph balance,
power-pop quartet 6x, folksinger rose polenzani, the edgy atlanta hip-hop
stylings of justin hale on "in formation" and most recently an acid jazz,
neo-cabaret duo, mrs. fun.

the social consciousness of amy ray's philosophical journey has expressed
itself strongly in actions through daemon. a double album called honor
featured a collection of never-before-released tracks from artists like
bonnie raitt, indigo girls, toad the wet sprocket, soul asylum, bruce
cockburn and matthew sweet as well as native american artists. proceeds of
the album went to benefit the "honor the earth campaign" group started by
amy ray and emily saliers. "we created a board of indian activists. did a
tour every tour season [once every couple of years]. profits are presented
to the board then we give grants to the existing indigenous groups working
to create sustainable communities within the various indigenous cultures."
honor the earth has raised nearly half a million dollars and significant
political resources for native environmental groups since its inception. the
album, honor, sold over 10,000 copies.

the best selling album to date was a recording of jesus christ superstar
featuring a host of atlanta based artists. the album became a hit selling
over 25,000 copies. the cast of performers turned the recording into a live
stage show starring indigo girls amy and emily as jesus and mary magdalene,
respectively. this album was also a benefit project and raised over $60,000
for groups working to end handgun violence.

these days amy is looking closely at the business of running the label,
gauging what records will sell and then designing budgets to fit the scope
of the project. "i used to be a rich rockstar," she explained, "now i'm just
a working class rockstar." most of the releases on daemon sell between 3,000
and 6,000 copies and many of the higher profile albums have been benefit
projects. when asked if daemon was profitable she said, "not yet. but we're
closer than we've ever been."

amy is now working on a solo record to be released on daemon next year - a
chance to assert a somewhat edgier indigo girl. "it's not a departure for
me," she said, "it's me instead of me and emily. it's kind of the electric
side of the indigo girls without emily, so it's kind of lo-fi and a little
less musical."

profiles with a couple of the artists on daemon:

danielle howle

career

i've put out five cd's on various indie labels. my first serious band, lay
quiet awhile, was discovered by amy some time ago. she attended a show at
music farm in charleston, sc, supporting a big act she had called ellen
james society.

daemon

the gig was sponsored by local alternative rock station, 96 wave. lay quiet
awhile opened the show by chance (a story in itself) and basically got
signed that night. 96 wave was and still is the biggest station in
charleston, and the surrounding area. this is how i began with daemon.
daemon is the reason my career is anywhere.

when my band broke up, the label put out my live acoustic record, "live at
mckissick museum." next put out an album which was half acoustic and half
electric, (introducing my new band the tantrum's) on simple machines
records. i was not gone for long, just that record and a seven inch. then i
found myself back at daemon again for the next album (full band) making a
record we called "do a two sabel." it got a lot of national acclaim,
charting in cmj for the year and getting the top ten of 98 in three
prominent magazines.

touring

as far as touring goes, i have done it a lot. i took the last two months
(july and august of 2000) to stay home and really write. yes, i have a job!
yes, i am extremely poor, more so than people who only tour a month out of
the year. it's a struggle. i am ready. this break was good. it was the first
break since 95 (a silly year for rock and roll in my book) that i got to
stay home consecutively for two months straight.

mp3

this is a new area for me. i just try to write tunes when i have the time.
perhaps if people could download a few of my tracks here and there, it would
be cool. if a whole album gets downloaded that is ok, but i would rather
them have the good recording quality of a disc my label produces. the
artwork and the package in its entirety is important to us. we have
something to say to people with every bit of print we make.

major labels

major labels are right a lot of the time, but they are wrong more. they
don't take chances like indies with new artists. when they do, they don't
invest long enough. small labels takes chances with artists and most don't
really have the cash or personnel to back up the success of the artist they
sign. daemon is different. that's the bottom line for me. they back it up.
but as individuals, i find indie artists able to bear just about anything
the circumstances put out in the biz. no matter what, indie people will
always rule.

indie labels

if you commit to an indie label, then there are less contractual
obligations. an indie artist has more drive to get their music to the world.
it's hands on by the band. indie people usually don't have a staff of people
to help, other than the few existing at the small label. the resources are
limited and the band has to play a role in following up with connections of
the label and constantly making new ones for label and band. manager or not.

indie people who put on consistent live shows will overpower. putting it out
there is key when on the road. perhaps their appearance schedules are not as
vigorous in most cases. i tend to tour like michelle malone, or rose
polenzani, like i had a bus and a major label behind me, to pay expenses and
keep me in hotels, but who cares! however, if you are sleeping on a floor,
and eating shit, then you are doing that. it adds up after about ten years.

the woman thing

may the best human win and kick ass. how to get to this point is simply
being good. i am a singer songwriter. i moonlight with a great band and have
a dual career. both rule in my opinion. being a woman may be an issue to
some people but it is not to me. art stands on its own. i believe this.
unfortunately, many opinions have been made previously about women and women
in music. i don't know what they are and i don't care to know. i can't
battle the ignorant. i only play shows and make records.

expressing the song

i don't really use my clothes, makeup, or shoes to express myself onstage. i
usually look the same as if i am going to the grocery store. however, i do
express myself in a visual manner. my expression changes all the time
physically with each song. every song has a different character. they are
not the writer, but who i write about. characters in songs are perceptions
of the writer. right now i feel every song has and image. i don't.

pan howe of ph balance

career aspirations

i am working on the second ph balance album and my second solo album called
"homegoing" i write poetry pamphlets which i release every season. i make
halter tops in the interim to get the juices flowing. i am having the time
of my life.

biggest support

chris burt (my boyfriend/collaborator). we have created together for over 10
years. emotional support is the best because unfolding the different layers
and discovering myself is the real passion and miracle behind creating for
me.

mp3

i am a fan of mp3s because right now it feels like empowerment. we (ph
balance) have gotten immediate response from people who have found us on
different sites. it's very exciting. technology is moving so fast that all i
can do is enjoy, watch, participate and then turn it off!

daemon

daemon got our first album out into the world beautifully. we received a lot
of press and opportunity because of their efforts. the staff is kind and
laid back and i learned so much about how a record is released and how to
communicate with a label.

indie vs. major

right now i am interested in indie labels because i just want my work to get
out there and majors are tricky and slow and the deals are so unfair and
uneven. if someone offered me a major label deal tomorrow, believe me i'm
going to be all over it, but i've learned that to drive for it is unhealthy
for me as a person and an artist.

being a woman in the industry

today i feel excited and empowered because i just love being a woman period.
has it been helpful or hurtful? it's been both. starting out, i had troubles
dealing with such a male dominated environment. for example: going into a
music store and not being waited on because it was assumed i was someone's
girlfriend. today, i really focus on embracing the feminine and masculine in
myself and it helps keep a lot of chauvinism and isms in general out of my
reality ... patience...

stage wear

i make a lot of the clothes i wear. i have a collection of halter tops that
i conjure sort of spell- like for special shows. i use vintage materials and
love mixing vintage with modern/futuristic. i have really long hair and it
makes me happy.

hello all,

i ordered the dvd of live at the fillmore from buy.com, unfortunately
for some reason they sent me the vhs version. the return policy for
buy.com is that they will send the correct item out only after they
receive the returned item(even if they screwed up). so i figured i could
pass this along to one of you guys because one there seems to be a lack
of copies and two because the dvd is now backordered at buy.com. so i
will send the video along to the first person to respond. the price is
$15.50, which breaks down to 14.50 for the video plus a buck for
postage. the video is unopened. i would prefer to receive the payment
first before i ship but i can probably be persuaded otherwise if you ask
nicely. good luck on being the first mailer, i will only notify the
first person so if i don't mail you back then you were not the first
mail i received - take care - todd

okay everyone in order for me to get up the money for this project so we
can all have our stickers, i'm putting out a two-week deadline.

so be sure to send off your payment now, then when i have the funds i
will order. it will then take two weeks for northern sun  to do the
stickers. so the sooner you get that payment off, the better.

and when you send off your order please specify in a written note what
bumpersticker you want, it will make things a little easier on my end.

we have a new compilation cd hopefully coming out either in december or january. depends on how munch longer it takes us to deal with legal type contract thing-a-ma-jigs as well as naming it and designing the art work. there are ton of bands and solo performers on this comp including: california lightning, le tigre, amy ray, the crowns, the sissies, kiki + herb, darien brahms, sleater kinney, tracy and the plastics and lots more that i'm forgetting because i don't have the list with me. we will post a complete list and description on the catalog page soon.

i must be lucky, i found a copy at borders on the first try....it was
their last vhs copy...i called ahead and had them hold it.

i called sam goody (i don't know if they are in your area, but they're
all over st.paul/mpls) their biggest outlet, and tey  had the dvd, but
not the vhs. i asked,"well, why is that?" they said, "well the record
companies want you to make the switch over to dvd. so often they'll put
the dvd's out first, and wait two or three months for the vhs."

in my cynical mind i said, "you mean they want us to spend more moey for
a dvd player, just so that we can spend more on one lousy  dvd?" one
lousy concert?

they said, "yep." annoyed, i said,"well, i guess i'll just wait."  i
hung up, checked my email, god bless us all someone emailed me and told
me borders had it on vhs.

so ha-ha!! sam goody......so much for  "goody
got it."

heehee :) i like that :)

hey did i already post the details of the rockrgrl conference? i can't
remember.. anyway, it's nov 2-4 (iirc) and there are ticket details on
www.rockrgrl.com. amy is one of the keynote speakers... i don't know if
she'll be performing also. the last i checked the rockrgrl site they did not
have a performance shedule listed but i spoke to melissa ferrick in sf on
sunday and she told me her and michelle malone are both playing and barbara
kessler is also playing :) yay! so i think i'm going :) there is a big jump
in price though to get into the whole thing (which includes amy's speech) vs.
just getting into the performances.. so that's the big bummer.

anyway, i also want to mention again that i'm hosting my first house concert
for allette brooks and i need an audience! allette is really cool and folky
and funny and plays some damn good guitar... she reminds me of a cross
between dar and ani. it's sept 24, 7pm, gilroy california, tickets $8-12. so
if you're interested in coming, please e-mail me for more details :) i'm
hoping this one will go well so that i can line up barbara kessler in
november :)

all i can say is wow!

i would have to say that this is the finest live collection i've ever seen
on video, from any artist.  everything i feel inside myself about amy and
emily is addressed in their interviews and song selections.  also, those
stares amy gives the camera (haunting) and those expressions on emily's face
(intensity) when she's hammering away just totally exemplify and complement
my feelings for them.  it is the crowning achievement (thus far) in their
repertoire.

my hat goes off to those two ladies.  they have remained true to themselves
and produced products that are unmistakably "indigo."  they have my deepest
respect.  i only wish there was some way i could give back to them all they
have given to me.

thank you, amy and emily.

hey guys,

can someone clear this show up?  i've heard that it's going to be free, that
it's not going to be free, that the ig's will only play a little, that the
ig's will play a whole set.  if you do have to pay, where can i get tickets?

anyway, thanks for any information.

the concert is free.  there would be no way to
shut off centennial park to the public and charge for
ticketing. i haven't heard many details on the set
length yet, but it is a rally and concert.  so far
only ig and mm are confirmed, but i believe that more
acts may be added, which would logically affect
everyone's set length.
it should be a great day though.  my parents will
be in town that weekend, and they're excited about
going to an ig concert with me.  it's been seven and a
half years since our last.

my only complaint is that the camera zoomed away from amy during "the
beautiful ladies walk right by..." part because she usualy does the little
eye roll and that cute little blushing/ kinda grin... on the video boot of
live at the great woods ma. they show it... i was hoping it would be on
latf...but other then that it was great!!!!  i loved the closer to fine part
and that look in amy's eyes during faye tucker...that was incredible....

personally, i don't think latf is the greatest video the girls have ever put
out.  i think that there was way too much editting.  i would have liked to
have heard more chit chat between songs.  and i agree with kim, i love
watching amy during the beautiful ladies line.  it's so cute!  :-)

i really like great woods a lot better.  sure, there was also editting, but
not as much.

though i must say, i do like the little interview segments between some songs
in latf.  i wish there were more of those, though...

yeah, i'm goin through an adjustment phase like i did with cons when it
came out,  and
am really longing for the release of live from greatwoods. (that is
classic amy and emily at their best.......love chickenman
love that ole buzzard)

i don't think they'll ever release that . oh well.
getting back to latf, i think i could do without
seeing the chandelier (beautiful as it is) and  viewing the drums from
back and the top.

if i want to view their backs i'll wait for them to do a
theatre-in-the-round near me.  i thought  the show itself leaves a few
things to be desired.  however, shame onyou is not one of them. they do
that song with so much gusto!
especially on the f-word!!!  they seem to enjoy teasing the croud into
cussing!!  i loved it when
they did that song last june and got me singing the f-word, by backing
out .i thought "ah yeah,
right you ! that's so sneaky!!!"

i guess it's sort of sweet revenge on all those
schools who cancelled their shows in the spring of '98, citing  the
f-word in shame on you as one of their lame excuses!!

i do have to wonder though, some of the images are a tad fuzzy,
especially when they shine the lights out into the audience. does anyone
else notice that on their vhs?  or maybe i have a defective tape. i
don't know. it doesn't do that all the time just in certain places.

love amy's hair!! they are both cute.

peace

amy's facial expressions during a lot of those closeups either gave me the
chills or had me putting a deathgrip on my pillow just to keep from passing
out!

and i thought it was absolutely adorable when emily talked about her and amy
knowing each other since they were "knee-high to a grasshopper," in that
cute-as-all-hell accent of hers.

oh . . . and is it just me, or is emily not the cutest thing during "go,"
when she's cranking that riff between verses and hopping up and down on both
feet?  just the contrast between her lead guitar line and the way she's
hopping (and the look on her face) strikes me as hilarious.  and adorable.

i have waited a little while before posting about this to see what you all
thought about the video.

i was at this show and it was probably the greatest ig show i have ever
seen.  the video certainly does not do it justice.  i agree that there is
way too much editing and cutting on the pan, etc.  but i am thankful for
those intense amy close-up shots.  whew!

the video was done by a local crew who produce a music show for one of our
pbs stations.  i have to say that i've always found the show to be pretty
amateurish.  so, i wasn't surprised at the quality of the video.  it is
just frustrating how many little details they missed (like amy rolling her
eyes) because they weren't familiar with the band's live performance.
we could see that this was happening at the show and i think the video
reflects it.  i am dismayed that they cut five songs (mostly amy songs)
from the concert; i was told that was a sony/epic decision and not a
musiclink decision.  i am still hoping they will show some of the cut
songs on their local broadcast.

also, i have to admit that i am bitter.  i waited for 13-14 hours in line
to be in the front row at that show and you never see me in the video, not
even once.  it's not like i wanted to be a big star or anything, but it
would have been nice to catch even a tiny glimpse of me.  :)
if you are interested, look at the people in the front row bouncing during
go.  in fact, you can see my friend cat's head bouncing a lot during the
entire video.  that's my gang.

i feel strongly that they missed a lot of opportunities to show the
band-crowd interaction.  the crowd was singing loud at that show, and
dancing like crazy.  on the boot, you can really hear it.  on the video, i
think it sounds a little sterile, very unlike a live show.  if you have
seen the dave matthews band concert video on pbs, you know what i'm
getting at.  they have a lot of crowd reaction shots where you can really
see how much people get into the songs and sing the words.  it is a more
accurate representation of what a live show is like.

well, those are my thoughts for now.  what about others who were there
that night?

i agree--i coulda done w/o seeing that bleedin' chandelier so
much!

& also... *sigh* i was pretty darn close (two ppl between me &
the front, on the emily side) & i didn't get in the video either.
near
the end, during "galileo," you can see a woman singing whom i
was talking to during the show. & i jumped up & screeched to my
mom, "i was right in front of her!!" (actually, i was right in
front of her girlfriend) if only the camera had kept moving forward
for a bit longer... *sigh*

i was especially stoked that they were releasing this one
because it was kinda accidental that i was there. i got sent on a
business trip to denver (i'm fr. ny) & realized it would,
miraculously, coincide w/both of the fillmore shows. ^_^

but, yeah, there was some great between-song banter (anyone
there remember the girl throwing the oreos up to emily? & her
saying, "wow, throwing oreos at the band, now that's rock &
roll!"--that's not quite verbatim) that got cut.

not to mention me. ;) i remember the cameras going over us a
lot. phooey.

mime-version: 1.0

i stumbled across a borders in woodland hills
(i forgot there was one in woodland hills) and
found the last vhs copy they had on the shelf.

i enjoyed the video but i found three things
things odd. first, they had an unusual performance
of "closer to fine" considering the kind of
video it was. i thought they'd perform it just
like all of the other songs in the set. it was
a good performance, just a little different.

second, i was hoping "gone again" would be in the
set. i love that tune and always enjoy hearing
it live. third, we get another version of "land
of canaan." i thought they were through releasing
versions of that song.

it may sound like i didn't like the tape but
that's not true. i enjoy anything that shows
amy and emily and especially liked the interview
and backstage material. i hope you enjoy it also!!!

this has nothing to do with the quality of the
tape, but isn't the way the record company is
releasing it a little odd? it is available in some
stores, but not others. one of the clerks i spoke
to said the video was supposed to be released as
a companion to the upcoming greatest hits cd, but
then the plans changed. it makes me feel like
the video was not released as much as it escaped!!

osborne launches 'righteous,' 'heroine'
joan osborne releases her new "righteous love" cd this
week, along with the launch of her heroine magazine website
for women. the e'zine will spotlight the passions, struggles,
and achievements of extraordinary females, and the premiere
features an interview with mary j. blige, a conversation
about political activism between susan sarandon and the
indigo girls, and the work of photographer mary ellen mark.
"i love how the internet is changing the way we communicate
with each other," says osborne. "a magazine can be more
like a club who's members share things that excite them.
i'm always looking for ways to be inspired, and heroine
is a great way to spread that inspiration around, a place
to go to meet women who can open your mind and engage
your spirit."

was trawling around the web & happened upon allexperts.com.
it's one of those sites where volunteer 'experts' will answer
questions posed to them about anything from travel in japan to...
women's issues. i clicked on the latter & one of the
subcategories is indigo girls! no one's, as far as i can tell, asked
any questions about it, nor do they have any experts yet, but the
subcategory is there.

if anyone wants to go be an expert, you can have a look @:
http://www.allexperts.com/getexpert.asp?category=484

(yerrgh. hope that doesn't sound like a commercial! i have no
affiliation w/allexperts... i was looking for info on japan & saw
the ig thing & was bemused. & then surprised that there were no
experts yet!)

i don't think that lisa is the only one having mail problems.

i didn't get nearly as many b&p's as i had expected (that is why i asked you
to please e-mail me if you changed your mind about the newbie offers).  and i
know for a fact that one person did send her stuff out (maybe 2 weeks ago!)
and i still haven't gotten it.  there is no way to track "regular" mail, so i
really don't know what to do...

until i figure out what is going on with the mail, i am not going to do
another newbie offer (of course if i replied to you you can still send me
your stuff if you haven't already, but please send it today because as i
said, i am entering "close to gre time" again!!!!!!  if you're not going to
send it today, then please wait until the last week of september).  i hate to
see tapes lost in the mail.  and again, if you have received your stuff, and
haven't yet, please please e-mail me to let me know.

wake forest:
can little children go to the wake forest show?  do y'all know?

two questions:
i sent out an e-mail last night (this morning) about the michelle malone
concert this past sat.  i didn't recieve it in my mail box.  did anyone
else receive it?

anyway, i had 2 questions for anybody who knows:

1.  i went to the mm show this past sat at eddies attic.  michelle had
michael lorant and john mayer with her, and there was a woman with a
tight black motorhead shirt on who played the bass (might i add that she
was very cool looking?).  this mysterious bass player has long bleached
blond hair and wears lip stick.  no one in my area (on top of the
bar!!!!) knew who she was.  you guys know, don't you?

2.  in the bootleg of "go" that was featured in the well-circulated "to
be expected" who is the singer in the 2nd verse?  it doesn't sound like
amy.  the singer is a less reserved metal punk singer.  who is she?
don't tell me it was amy?  if so, she needs to be more like that.  also,
i heard insane jane on the radio today for the first time.  wow!

seeing as how i have some 2 foot flame, i should have known that, but i

anyway, i like jean smith a lot.  i even wrote her a letter about 2 years

see, i read the article, but i don't think (and i could be wrong) that she
specifically said she was bi-sexual. she mentioned being interested in men,
i believe. however, there are plenty of lesbian who express and interest in
men (just as many straight women might entertain lesbian fantasies) without
identifying as bisexual. (by the way, i have no problem with amy being
bi-sexual if she is-not that it's even my place to *have* a problem- i
think it's great and couragous that she talks about it, i just wanted my
facts straight)

joan also stated that, although she wasn't a card-carrying bi-sexual, she
had some limited experience with women. (which of course is none of our
concern, but is still an interesting piece of information that she chose to
share with the world.)

i read the nerve article too, and i've always wonderred if amy really is
a bisexual and doesn't realize it, or maybe just a very outspoken person
who figured it's a bedroom interview why not be alittle more candid
here.

she says she's a lesbian, and i guess until she says otherwise, trust
that she believes she's alesbian, than she's a lesbian.

even if i often wonder if it's time  we starting escewing labels and
realize that as humans we all experience a wide variety of emotions, and
sexual desires in a lifetime.

when i get into bisexuality, and start learning about all these
different terms like lesbian identified bi, or hetero identified lesbian
whewee! that's a lot to digest. to me it gets rather mind boggling.
interresting topic though!!
i hope you don't get any flames.

i do know one thing's for certain! she's one hell
of a performer.

peace
barb

netherlands to vote on gay marriage
by anthony deutsch
the hague, netherlands (ap) - the netherlands, long among the gay rights
vanguard, is set to solidify that position with a bill converting the
country's ''registered same-sex partnerships'' into marriages, complete with
divorce guidelines and wider adoption rights for gays.

proponents say the legislation, which was virtually assured of passing during
a vote set for tuesday, would give dutch gays rights beyond those offered in
any other country.

an overwhelming majority in the 150-seat parliament favors the government's
proposal. only a few small christian parties opposed the bill in an emotional
and often heated three-day debate last week.

''the law acknowledges that a person's sex is not of importance for
marriage,'' said boris dittrich, a member of the centrist democrats 66 party
and a proponent of the plan. he spoke during what he called ''the most moving
debate'' of his parliamentary career.

in norway and sweden, gay couples can already register their partnerships and
denmark has gone a step further - it was the first country in the world to
allow gay marriages in 1989. two years ago, the netherlands enacted a law
allowing same-sex couples to register as partners and to claim pensions,
social security and inheritance.

but the new dutch legislation goes farther, creating full equality for gays,
activists said.

same-sex couples will be able to marry at city hall and adopt dutch children.
they will be able to divorce through the court system, like heterosexual
couples.

''we will be able to call it what it is and that's marriage,'' said henk
krol, an activist and editor-in-chief of the gay krant magazine. he said the
vote ''will be an absolute first in the world.''

the law is expected to take effect early next year. krol said he plans to
convert his own partnership status to marriage as soon as it does.

displaying unusual solidarity, all three parliamentary factions in the
governing coalition - the left-of-center labor party, the liberal vvd and the
smaller democrats 66 - have pledged to back the proposal. even a few members
of the biggest opposition party, the largely traditional christian democratic
alliance, or cda, have expressed support.

the plan hasn't been recognized by the dominant protestant or roman catholic
churches, but a few breakaway churches have sent encouraging letters to
legislators.

the remonstrant brethren, which broke from the protestant church in 1619, was
one step ahead of the dutch parliament, having accepted gay marriages in
1986. the remonstrants and a group called the old catholic church are the
best-known supporters of gay rights here.

while gays will enjoy new liberties in the netherlands, they may run into
trouble when they travel in countries where homosexuality remains illegal.
the foreign affairs ministry has proposed offering legal assistance to dutch
citizens in such cases.

some opponents fear the unique position of gays could isolate the dutch and
set the netherlands apart.

the bill will create ''a world without foundations ... where the historical
understanding of marriage is torn from its roots,'' said kees van der straaij
of the reformed political party.

i'm hoping someone on the list can help me out...i downloaded a mp3 of "the
spirit we" and the artist(s) was listed as kate bush/indigo girls.  being a
huge fan of both, i was really curious about it as i had not heard it before.
although the voice is unmistakably kate, i'm at a loss because i can't find
any other information on the net about this song or any connection with ig.
does anyone out there know anything about it?  i'd appreciate any help you

it's actually not kate bush or the girls singing that song...it's rachael
sage.  she was a performer at lilith fair and she's got a beautiful voice.
you can listen to more of her songs at her website rachaelsage.com.

i'm not sure how that song ever got listed on napster as being kate bush or
the indigo girls...go figure.

hey y'all,

i am still bitter that yahoo took over web ring.  aurrg.

but anyway, another e-mail list that i am on used to have a web ring for its
members' web sites.  so i thought, "how cool would it be to have an ig@
netspace.org web ring.  anyway, so i went ahead and created it.  the only
real requirement is that the site's owner is a member of this list.

so if you have a website (ig content is not a requirement, by the way), you
can go to
http://edit.webring.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/membercgi?ring=indigogirlsliste&addsite
and join.  you will need a yahoo id, but that is easy to get and free.

webrings are cool because they increase the traffic to your site and they
make your page a member of a community of pages with a similar theme. so i
hope a lot of you with websites will join!

anyway, if you have any questions, please contact me.

:-) karen

look, i stand behind my first several posts. i wanted to know what amy had
publically (her choice!) said. others took it farther. you won't hear more
from me on the subject.
have a good day all.

i just got this from someone else on the list, sent via private mail. i
won't say who, to protect privacy, but i'm mildly insulted...
why would i care whether or not the post was sent by a man or woman? the
issue here was that it was too irreverent, too personal.

it had been written by a woman rather than a man?
(the first people to post on the topic were quite
respectful and if they care about amy's sexual
identity, that's okay. this is the only one that edged
toward overly personal.)"

i agree that amy's sexual orientation isn't anyone's business...so i
won't comment on that here...however i do think that the bisexualty
topic really isn't that different from the topics come up, such as
lesbianism, ad gay rights and so forth.

if it's okay to discuss those issues, then why isn't okay to discuss
bisexuality as well?  that
sounds like a double standard. i personally benefit from learning about
the different views we have on those issues, and i wish others on this
list could as well. this is a very diverse list.
and i ike that.  if we could perhaps discuss this topic without using
names, i would agree with that.

in light of the bisexuality thread and recent posts about what it is
exactly some of us are objecting to--as in, is it really the fact that
we're spending way too much time discussing a personal issue in amy ray's
life or is it the fact that some of us are insulted by posts by men (yes, i
was asked whether or not a certain post would have bothered me less had it
been written by a woman) or if we're objecting to talking about bisexuality
rather than lesbian/gay issues--i decided i have something to say on the
topics at hand.  ok, first of all, i just want to say that while i
understand that men and bisexuals have been mistreated in the past by the
lesbian popular opinion, i think it's just as offensive for people to walk
around with chips on their shoulders assuming that others are attacking
those two groups of people. i am quite confident that i would have
responded to the exact same post about chances with amy and her gf if it
had been sent by a woman.  i found it offensive in light of what we are
supposed to be talking about on this list, namely the indigo girls'
music.  as for any prejudice against bisexuality, i don't have any. i think
that anyone who denies some degree of bisexuality is fooling him/herself.
yes, i understand that most people lean hard one way or the other, but a
huge percentage of people i know admit that there is at least a slight
possibility that they could fall for someone of the same/opposite sex
(depending on their sexuality to begin with).  someone got upset because
folks are objecting to the "bisexuality" thread and argued that threads
about gay and lesbian issues don't get squashed. well, i'd argue that they
do. furthermore, if this were a thread about bisexual issues/rights in
general, it might be different. however, it's not. the thread was about amy
ray's personal preferences, a thread that turned personal.
i know that we have some sort of rule about discussing aspects of
the girls' lives that are public knowledge (that is, things that have been
in the media somehow) but i think that sometimes we should draw the line a
little closer than the media has.  i mean, we all have seen how trashy the
media has gotten--just watch jerry springer for two minutes--so why should
we hold it up as an example of subjects okay to discuss?  if we really
respected the indigo girls, would we be gossiping about them?  yes, talking
about their sexuality at great length is gossiping, and i don't care how
many interviews amy's done where she reveals whether or not she's lesbian
or bisexual or whatever.   those interviews were gossipy.  i realize that
amy and emily came out publicly several years ago, and i know how
beneficial that was for people like me who were dealing with sexual
orientation around the same time (i came out a month before i read the
article about them, and i swear i didn't even suspect before then because i
loved their music) but folks, really, what is the obsession?
i think the bottom line for me is that i get frustrated with some of
these personal threads.  i get tired of people using the "it's public
knowledge" argument. if it's really public knowledge then you should be
able to get your answer from somewhere other than this list, like the
lifeblood article archives.  why do we care so much about the indigo girls'
personal lives, anyway? are we all so bored with our own lives that we have
nothing better to do?
sorry if this flames or offends. hope it makes you think.

i honestly was referring to the posts relating to amy and her sexuality , as i stated in the original post. the fact it is her life and  and her decision. i don't care if she has said this or that to the media. she said all she wanted to say and that should be the end of it. just because she opened the door, as it were. does not mean that we can or should then delve deeper and find more meaning or evidence to point this way or that way.  there are 1,000 other things we can discus that do not deal with the individual lives and decisions of amy and emily.  i agree that we should draw a line different than the media has drawn simply because, the media is supposed to be ( i know it isn't always) non biased. however, we are the ig list. we should respect the two individuals at a greater level than the media has chosen to do.

to make a point clear to all. it is the items relating to amy and emily's own lives that i feel should not be topic of conversation and/or debate on this list. the topics which  may relate or those that which they may identify with or relate to or agree even disagree with are fine.as long as it is done in a manner which does not harm another or ridicule one for their own thoughts and opinions as they express them here on the list.

i was just in richmond, va on sunday and went to plan 9...
they had the "cold beer and remote control" single (which contains,
obviously, cold beer... but it also has a live version of "shame on you",
and a live version of "peace tonite" but best of all it has 2 interview
segments... unfortunately they are short segments).  anyway, i'm sure this
cd has been talked about on the  list before, but i thought i'd share just
in case it was news to anyone else..

i definitely know that the plan 9 in richmond had a few copies left, don't
know about any other plan 9's in va though....

okay people are askin questions on how the orders should be sent,
postage etc. so....
here's the low-down.

1. send your requests in writing
2   include an extra envelope addressed to          yourself with my
return address

3. the size of the bumpers will be 3"x12'  so if you don't want your
bumpers bent your extra envelope will have to be at least 3x12, if you
want  more than one, then i reccomend you use a large manilla envelope .

4 postage is included in the price ($4)

5. put everything together in one large envelope

if you've already sent your requests and payments, no problem. i'll deal
with it.

allow at least 4-6 weeks ,  it will take at least two weeks just to get
them printed, plus i still haven't received any payments. so the sooner
all the payments are in  the sooner, i order, the sooner you get your
stickers.

remember please get them in by next thursday.

and save this email.

hey gang,

i'm over here getting a real big kick out of this.

i posted the manage idea as a joke. well, sort of, point is who here would
turndown intimate time with either amy or emily?!!!

the other thing is that they are rock stars, in turn in the public eye, which
alone opens them to whatever it is that we want to say as long as it isn't it
the rhelm of slander or anything else the law dictates is not aloud.

as far as topics of objection.......    no offence, but thats about the
funniest thing i've read this week. (last week i read an awesome joke about
neil armstrong and his next door neighbor) the fact that someone on this
list, which i've always praised as a group of individuals would ever dare
even think of censoring posts. fact is that their are tons of things on this
list, i.e nigc about ani or rose, that i dont' want to read. so i hit the
delete button. if the subject line reads "bi-sexuality " and you don't want
to read about it,  delete it.

again, amy and emilly are rock stars and have elected to be talked about in
what ever light the seeing public chooses.

and this is the indigo girl mailing list!!! where else are we going to talk
about their personal lives (which, this facit was talked about in an interview
)

maybe this thread is dead, but no way was it wrong. as a straight guy, i'm
always fishing through gay posts, for once a semi-hetro one pops up and
everyone is in an uproar. shame on you.

i was in a wolfgang puck cafe in the los angeles

on the cafe intercom.

they were playing pop tunes and i heard the
familiar chorus to "cold beer and romote control."

how perfect is that tune to play in a cafe,
especially since the song's writer emily is
a restaurateur herself?

i for one would be very interested in a list meet after
the show.  i'm flying down from boston (just bought
my tickets) on friday so i can have that day to myself
to visit viriginia highlands and other points of interest. i've
also heard from a few others who are driving out for the show
and they have asked me to keep them posted.

i'd be happy to help out in hosting.  just one thing - i would
need some suggestions on places to eat and such, since i've
only been to atlanta once.

i can also confirm it is a full set (sent a quick email to rcam
before making my decision a couple of weeks ago).  since i'll
be by my onezies i'd love to meet up with y'all afterwards.

let me know what i can do.

no, shame on you.  a joke about menage a trois is *funny*?  who was it
funny to?  the two women whose sexuality and loving relationship you so

really now people...do you really care what her

affect how we feel about her. amy is still the same

2.2. do amy and emily know about the list, and how do they feel about it?

amy and emily do know about the mailing list; indications are that they have mixed feelings about it.  when asked in a 1994 interview how she felt about the list amy said, "well, there are positive parts about that.  a lot of that internet stuff has helped a lot of
musicians that i know as far as publishing tour schedules.  the only negative ramification i see is when people start talking about your personal life..."

so how 'bout just respecting their wishes.

honestly, i really don't see how this might augur a breakup. a&e
keep insisting that they have no intention of splitting up... why wouldn't
we believe them?
my guess (and this is totally uninformed, so nobody quote me) is
that ig are simply taking advantage of the fact that they have so many
other bands on board and are taking time off from the concerts for some
direct action. amy is probably going to be off rallying the troops in some
non-musical capacity while emily holds down the fort. maybe we'll get
details when hte launches their new site in a couple of days.
by the way, how cool is it that so many other musicians have
gotten involved with the hte tour? it gives me hope that hte will continue
even after ig stop touring 38 years from now.

hi folks,

living in buffalo, ny the past decade or more has meant a near endless
stream of goodbyes, as friends and loved ones depart in search of new and
better opportunities.  just a little over a week ago, jessica's quiet,
insightful songs captivated an audience that had moments earlier been
rocking to the acoustic blues of my friend kearney fitzpatrick.  as jess
took the stage, she expressed concern that her performance would bring the
crowd down - not so - what she did was to gather them in....

she and scott will definitely be missed.....

below is a forward from my friend mike maffei.....

< on september 15, we are honored to host a going away party/concert for our
good friend and fellow singer songwriter, jessica grant. she and scott are
moving to portland, oregon at the end of the month. the concert will feature
jessica, tim baldwin, joe lamay, kim & i and our new band, bases covered,
and
our special guest, katie miller. we hope that you can attend and help us
give
them a great sendoff!

it's at the coffee bean cafe, 3268 main street (near englewood ave.)
buffalo,

and will run from 8:00 to midnight. for those of you that don't know, the

dinners

i agree with mandy.  when i saw the "no amy" note on the ig site, i just
assumed that amy probably has a speaking engagement on that day.  and since
they are doing 4 shows in montana,  they probably figure that it is ok if amy
misses one.

and yes, since there are so many other musicians, (hte shows aren't really ig
shows, they are hte shows...) there will be plenty of material to work with.

but again, i agree with mandy.  i don't think this means they are breaking up
or even talking about breaking up.  they have both performed solo in the past
while they were together as the indigo girls...

i must say that when i realized that amy's name was missing from the
bozeman line-up, my first inclination was not to go into a giant panic
attack assuming they were deciding to go their separate ways right here in
the middle of montana. i just figured she must be doing something on the
reservation or working in some other "direct action" capacity that night.

it's one date in the middle of a relatively long tour (including, yes,
four dates in montana), plus with joan baez, bonnie, *and* dar williams
stepping in on that date, while ms. ray will most definitely be missed, i
think the others can do a decent job without her that one night.

let's not start sending out the s.o.s. calls yet.  and don't forget those
two albums left on their contract.

i have a question as well: it seems that in all the ads i've seen so far
for the montana hte shows, bonnie raitt has been touted as the headliner,
backed up by ig, joan, etc. i was always under the impression, in the
past, that it was an indigo & friends endeavor. any insights?

it wasn't your heterosexuality we had a problem with, joe, it was your total

as a gay guy i have to agree with joe here. there have been plenty of comments
from the girls here about loving to hook up with amy or emily, many in dubious
taste. so it's fair game for the guys as far as i'm concerned (altho obviously
drooling over a&e isn't in my own arena).

well, there are two things you can do about this. you can reply
these women's posts - either onlist or off - and ask them to be more
respectful of amy and emily's privacy, or of the general onlist community.
alternately, you can take their tasteless behavior as license to act with
similar disrespect. me, i think the point of joining a voluntary community
like this one is trying to make it a better place rather than a worse one,
if only so that i myself can get more out of being here. but hey, i guess
we all have different priorities.

subject:      the netherlands oks gay marriages
mime-version: 1.0

the netherlands oks gay marriages
by anthony deutsch
the hague, netherlands (ap) -- the netherlands enacted a bill tuesday
giving same-sex couples the right to marriage and all the trappings,
including adoption and divorce -- legislation that gives gays rights beyond
those offered in any other country.
the new law will bring little change to the daily lives of most gays in a
country that has long been at the vanguard of gay rights.  but activists say
it marks a bold step toward recognizing the equality of gay and heterosexual
unions in the netherlands.
lawmakers thumped their desks in approval when the vote passed 109-33 in
the lower house, and some of the scores of witnesses in the packed public
gallery applauded and embraced.  the bill still needs approval by the upper
house, considered a formality, and is expected to take effect next year.
opponents warned the legislation will isolate the netherlands and said it
threatens dutch values.
"we are going in the completely wrong direction,'' said lawmaker kees van
der staaij of the reformed political party.  "we are ending an age-old
tradition anchored in the bible.''
under the bill, gay couples can convert their current "registered
same-sex partnerships'' to full-fledged marriages, complete with wider
adoption rights and guidelines for divorce.  however, they are barred from
adopting children overseas because of potential confrontation with countries
that don't allow gays to marry.
"we now have a choice,'' said mark wagenbuur who came to the hague to
witness the vote with his partner, lei lennaerts, and two other gay friends.
wagenbuur, 34, and lennaerts, 35, don't plan any adoptions, but said they
will formalize their long-standing relationship with a formal marriage.
"should i ask his father for his hand or should he ask mine?'' wagenbuur
asked with a laugh.
the law puts the dutch at the forefront of the gay rights movement, a
position held by denmark since that country gave official sanction to gay
marriages in 1989.
danish gay couples enjoy the same rights as heterosexuals except for the
right to adopt children.  in may 1999, they won the right to adopt their
partner's children but adoption from outside the marriage remains forbidden.
sweden also allows gays to register as couples with most of the rights of
marriage.
vermont has the closest thing in the united states to gay marriage after
approval of a law by the state legislature last spring.  the law created
civil unions, a legal institution parallel to marriage that provides the same
rights, benefits and responsibilities to same-sex couples.
dutch legislators said the bill will not open the netherlands to
so-called "marriage tourism,'' since marriages are allowed only for citizens
or people with residency permits.
"tourists cannot marry here,'' said boris dittrich, one of the
legislators who initiated the bill.
gay couples who legally wed in the netherlands also will find few
countries recognizing the marriage, he said, citing a survey conducted by the
dutch foreign ministry.  only a few scandinavian and european countries said
they would recognize the marriages of dutch gays who move to their countries.
andrew fielding, spokesman of the european union commission, said
recognition of dutch gay marriages will be "entirely a matter for each member
nation'' in the 15-member union.
it wasn't until two years ago that the netherlands allowed same-sex
couples to register as partners and to claim pensions, social security and
inheritance.
however, the law lagged behind the popular acceptance of gays in the
netherlands, especially in amsterdam, where the homo monument is a popular
tourist attraction and where gays annually hold a raucous floating parade on
the central canals watched by tens of thousands of people.
van der staaij, who opposed the bill, warned dutch gay couples could face
problems in other countries where homosexuality remains taboo or illegal.
the dutch take the lead on other social issues besides gay rights.
officials tolerate the use of small quantities of so-called soft-drugs such
as marijuana and hashish, allowing cafes to sell cannabis joints and a cup of
coffee.
prostitution is on open display in well-regulated red-light districts,
where scantly clad women sit like merchandise in shop windows.  private
television stations often show late-night soft-porn movies.

according to the faq, we don't talk about their personal lives here.
now, this whole thread started because someone asked for some clarity
on something amy said in an interview.  so fine, that question, in my
mind, could be discussed (was amy, in that interview, saying that she
was bi?) ok fair enough.  but imho, the thread has spun into something
else entirely and now it needs to stop.

coming out of lurkdom for this one....i'm sure dogs probably are allowed in centennial olympic park but do everyone a favor and leave the pooch at home. (i'm assuming this is in relation to the ig earth challenge show - apologies if it's not) not only will the dog get nothing out of the show but this park is smack in the middle of downtown atlanta. if the dog somehow gets away from you it's pretty much instant pancakedom....just my opinion....that and a marta token gets me on the subway. if you call the atlanta convention & visitors bureau @ 404.521.6600 i'm sure they could tell you the rules of the park as their offices are right next door.

bravo, bravo!  i can not think of any non-dog-centered function
involving a huge number of people and loud noises and confusion which is
an appropriate function for the family pet.  i cannot count how many
gatherings or events i've been to where the dogs, even when well
behaved, have ended up being considered a nuisance.  and, of course,
there's always those charming pooches whose owners are poorly civilized,
and there's nothing more exciting in a concert crowd than having a
dogfight break out.

please, just don't think about bringing dogs to concerts/ren
faires/fiestas/anything like that.  it's a happier world for everyone
when fido isn't subjected to that.

hey yall -

i dont think it means break up time is near...nah...i
mean it's just one date that amy wont be there - the
rest say ig - ya know?  maybe amy has a prior
committment...or something personal like taking her
cat to the vet...at any rate - it would really kickass
to see that show - what am i saying?! ha it would
kickass to see *any* of those shows...i keep checking
out the dates - staring at them and trying to figure
out some way i could get myself there...wah...come to
upstate ny!!!

so, michelle malone is going to be in my hometown this
weekend - iowa city, iowa...i cant believe im not
going to be there!  i've also been trying to figure
out a way to get there for the weekend...can't justify
the price of a plane ticket and, well, driving would
about make me insane - i guess ill just crank up all
her cds this weekend - and live vicariously through
the reviews i hope others will post!!!  (hint hint)

take it easy,
sunny
