yes, it's a great song.  they played it at the san diego show , oct. 1999.  i
have to say that show was better than the one they taped for the new concert
video.  anyone else think emily's voice is showing strain in the video?

indigo girl amy ray on heche-degeneres and
etheridge-cypher splits

(9/21/00, 6 p.m. et) - indigo girls amy ray and emily saliers
were among the first high-profile artists to come out as
lesbians a few years ago. now comes news about two recent
breakups of famous lesbian couples--first anne heche and
ellen degeneres last month, then melissa etheridge and
julie cypher this week.

when launch told ray of the etheridge-cypher split, she
responded much like the rest of the country, with a shocked
"no way!"

she added, "the thing about those couples is that they've
garnered so much press off the fact that they've had this
relationship. and so people are like, 'is it a . . . have we been
duped?' kind of feeling. but it's their lives. it's just that their
lives have been in the public eye for so long. i mean, people
break up, you know?"

ray also shed some light on the kinds of pressures that may
lead to gay breakups in general. "it's harder [for gay couples]
to stay together than it is for straight couples sometimes. i
honestly think that. because you're fighting a lot of different
battles. one of them is that society. . .i wouldn't say that in
l.a. . . i mean, there are certain areas that you can live [in]
that are so progressive that it's just the same, but for certain
people in certain areas to try to stay together, you're also
fighting the fact that you're not able to be out at work or you're
going to lose your job -- all these things that you don't think
about that lay so much stress on a relationship."

meanwhile, indigo girls will embark on their honor the earth
tour starting september 30 in billings, montana, and release
indigo girls: retrospective, on october 3.

"when they did the q&a at uconn last february, they joked about the fact that
when they called themselves indigo girls they got a lot of flak for the
'girls' thing -- because it wasn't pc."

that's so funny, i was just about to post the same thing.  i was also at
that q&a -- (2nd row - just about 2 breaths away) it was so great.

i have always called them "the girls".  it's like someone else posted - a
nickname, like "the stones", "the dead", etc.  it's also a pet name, sort of,
for me, because i think of them as friends through their music, and everybody
who knows me knows exactly who i'm referring to when i say "i'm
going to see 'the girls' tonight.

happy weekend

don't have anything to trade, but i can do a bs&p.  i've really had a great

oh man -
fonts are a graphic designer's best friend (or worst nightmare, if you cant
find them...)

check out www.chank.com, which has some fonts that just rock that are free
(tidbit - they made the portastat font which is on ani's little plastic
castle, but the album changed the font probably in illustrator)

there is a bunch of cool econo software font cds you can buy (i get some
like for 4 bucks) - my friend john used to make his own in college usuing
fontographer - needless to say he got a great job after school -

do a web search - chank has some funky fonts - an expert software cd - funky
fonts (i think it is like 13 bucks) is really cool, but there are tons of
free killer fonts on the web - make sure you download true type fonts for
win computers.

mime-version: 1.0

>from planet-out......

celebrity breakups: who are our role models now?

with the highly publicized breakups of the (equally highly publicized)
relationships of ellen & anne and melissa & julie, the gay community has lost
two of its most cherished relationship role models. these were highly visible
and well-liked celebrities we could point to as proof positive that our lives
and our loves should be treated the same as everyone else's. it's hard to
overestimate the empowerment young lesbians and gays receive from a rock or
tv star living openly and positively in the spotlight.

but celebrities are people too, and their relationships -- hyped as they may
be -- are as likely to end up on the cutting room floor as those of any of
us. so who do we look up to now? britney & justin? they're celebs, but
they're not gay. siegfried & roy? they're gay, but kind of ... weird.

ellen, anne, melissa, and julie have meant a lot to the gay and lesbian
community, and they'll continue to. here's wishing them luck as they move on.
in the spirit of gaining strength from the positive examples they've set for
so many of us, we've asked relationship expert betty berzon to provide some
tips for keeping a relationship together. we've also compiled a list of books
that will help you make the love last and suggested some movies to watch
(preferably with a pint of ice cream at your side) when it doesn't.

10 tips for making a relationship work
special to planetout from dr. betty berzon

weeks after the breakup of celebrity couple ellen degeneres and anne heche,
we were all startled to learn that the 12-year relationship of lesbian
mothers melissa etheridge and julie cypher had also ended. what does this say
about the quality of lesbian partnerships?

absolutely nothing.

it doesn't mean lesbian relationships don't work any more than a straight
celebrity's divorce means marriage doesn't work. what this does mean is that
two lesbians in a particular relationship have decided not to continue as a
couple. the fact that these two women, and the two whose breakup made
national news before them, are all in the entertainment industry is of no
small importance.

as a therapist practicing in los angeles for decades, i have worked with
hundreds of couples in the "business," as they call it. no matter what their
status or level of success, the complaint is always the same. it is very
tough to maintain an enduring satisfying partnership, of any kind, when you
are involved in the demanding, stressful pressure cooker of show business.

if you add to the mix a relationship that is under scrutiny as a curiosity
for the public and as a model for others who are trying to succeed at the
same kind of partnership, watch out!

the point here is that to generalize from these two breakups to whether gay
and lesbian relationships work is ridiculous, a big mistake and a disservice
to our community.

i have counseled, researched, written about, and studied same-sex
relationships for 30 years. it is my belief that most gay and lesbian people
in this country are in or heading for stable, fulfilling, enduring domestic
partnerships, and working hard to make a success of that part of their lives.
that's the model to pay attention to.

i am often asked if i have any tips to help maintain relationships in good
working order. i do. here they are.

1. assume permanence. we have an unfortunate "tradition" of failure in our
gay and lesbian partnerships. don't let that guide you into making a
premature decision to bail out. if you adopt the mindset that you can't
escape but you have to work the problem through, you'd be surprised at what
that can produce, uncomfortable as it may be in the process. (i attribute my
ability to be in a growing twenty-seven year relationship to learning this
lesson.)

2. acknowledge and accept differences. don't use ways in which your partner
is different from you to convince yourself that you are in the wrong
relationship. too often one can "demonize" a partner when the issue is only
that the person is different from you.

3. be open to change. learn to integrate the changes that are inevitable in
any life situation. don't give in to a fear of the unknown when your partner
shows signs of being different from what you signed up for.

4. counter negative messages to yourself about your partner. "what's the use
-- he won't listen." "she won't change -- why bother." "he doesn't care about
my feelings." "she just has to control everything." more than anything, these
messages to self can inhibit the ability to even try to work on problems.
this is not fair to you or your partner.

5. don't flee from conflict. it provides the opportunity to learn something
new about yourself or your partner. it's how a relationship grows. don't
abort the process; stay with it no matter how painful it is until you feel
inside that you have been heard and understood.

6. be willing to be wrong. you will be a certain percentage of the time. try
thinking about how what you are doing or saying must feel to your partner.
don't get lost in defensiveness. admitting you were wrong is an act of faith
in the relationship. it makes you a more trustworthy partner.

7. allow vulnerability. try to see how you are being too self-protective at
times, hanging on to control because you are unsure if you can handle the
intimacy giving up control might involve. try to let go a little more. you
might find you are capable of handling much more than you thought.

8. don't get stuck in too many routines. routines create a feeling of
predictability and safety, but they can deaden a relationship. challenge the
status quo. fight inertia. try something new. be partners in adventure.

9. express appreciation. let your partner know how much you value her or him.
don't cop out with "oh, she knows i appreciate her. why do i have to say it?"
or, "i wouldn't be here if i didn't value him. what's the big deal about
saying it." the big deal is that you may be wrong and he or she may not know
how you feel and may need to hear it from you.

10. express affection often. don't wait for sex to be the only conduit of
physical affection. hug. kiss. caress. we all need to feel the touch of love,
to get the message that we are still attractive and wanted.

these tips are about the quality of communication in the relationship, and

the tickets are going really fast for the mpls  show, so if you want to
go you best not wait.
i was going to wait till after the first of the month, when i get paid,
until i heard from  someone at the orpheum that in just in a few minutes
time their box office sold 400 tickets.

when i called ticketbastard this afternoon and
most of the main floor had already sold out.
with all that in mind i decided to bite, and the closest i could get to
the stage was row d ...not bad.

i think this show is going to sell out really fast.
i just thought  i'd sound a friendly warning.

and now back to your locally scheduled ig listening.

try:
www.slcd.com
neil.gemm.com
www.eil.com (these will likely be more expensive than the others...)

alternatively, the cbrc will be on the forthcoming b-sides five (although i
haven't decided yet whether or not to include the interviews... my gut
feeling is not, but then i need to find a couple more tracks to fill
time...)

hey y'all,

well i just ordered chicago hte tix for becky and myself.  i called tm at
about 11:57am and had the tm webpage opened in my browser (luckily we have 2
phonelines).

at noon on the dot, the tm agent ggot into the computer for me.  he said that
since it was the onsale time on the dot, the computers were jammed and the
best that he could offer me was something horrible like row p (and at the
chicago theater the row numbers go aa to zz and then start with the single
letters).  urrg.  i was frusterated.  so i quickly did a search on tm online,
and the same thing came up -- the $50 seats were nowhere to be found.

i asked the guy if the $50 were sold out (already?!).  he said probably.  so
i just preceded with my order for row p.  but right as i was giving him the
last 2 digits of my cc #, i checked the tm website again.  this time it came
up as i could purchase 2 tickets for row bb (emily side) -- 2nd row!!!  i
explained to the very nice (and i mean that with all sincerity, he was by far
one of the nicer people at tm i had ever dealt with) tm agent what i had
found, and asked him if we could stop the order.  he did, and i quickly
bought the 2nd row seats from the internet site!  so becky and i have second
row (bb) emily's side!  i ckecked the chicago theater seating chart just to
be sure.

i guess the "moral" here is that onsale times can be bad since the system is
so jammed.  try getting tickets on the onsale time on the dot, but you may do
better by waiting 2 minutes (no, i wouldn't reccommend waiting an hour!).

so i am very happy now!

:-) karen

the same person who gave me the kd lang flats a few weeks ago gave me a

i don't really like ferron and kd lang.  :(  anyway, my first idea was to

someone on this list who likes ferron.  so anyway, does anyone want to trad
an ig boot for the cd?  i don't know much about the cd (as i said i am not a
ferron fan).  it is in decent enough condition.  the track listing is:  1.
the choosen ones 2. alice says yes 3. venus as appearances 4. still riot 5.

8. ain't life a brook 9. i am hungry 10. dazzle the best 11. signals and

yeah, i'm pretty bored too. let's start an ongoing
conversation. hmmm...what do you think of the
direction the girls' music is going? i personally love
all their music and each cd seems to get better, but
there's something in the older stuff that i miss in
the new stuff. if you listen to sf and then cons you
notice they're as different as night and day.  maybe
it's the electric guitar is replacing the accoustic
guitar in their songs. who knows. any thoughts on
this?

well, when i look at both pictures, i have to agree that the front looks
like it's been "doctored" but that doesn't change the fact that
amy  doesn't look like she's feeling well. in both pictures she looks
very gaunt, and her face looks absolutely white.

i don't know maybe they just got her on a bad day,  i t couldn't have
been very easy to recover from  her surgery, and go back out onthe road
a
month later just this last year. i hope  she's taking care of herself.

my .02.

peace, and good night to everyone.

ok folx. time is near. breanna is driving to montana to hit the first show.
i got a good passenger van that seats 4 more comfortably, 5 if we squeeze 3
in the back and pack lightly. i intend to hit all the montana shows down to
park city and then see if my interest keeps going (which it probably would
with traveling companions).

i'd love to have some traveling companions. so if you are along the route
and want a ride, let me know. time is running short and i'm getting ready.
hmmm maybe i should buy tickets.

mime-version: 1.0

hey all,

let me start off the bat that i am in a strange mood.  not bad.  just
strange.  so if this seems jumbled, i am quite sorry.

first of all, i am feeling generous tonight.  it's 'bout time for another
newbie offer.  i take the gre on tuesday, so by the time i start to receive
any tapes, that'll be out of the way.  pretty much the same old scoop.
e-mail me for details.  but i have a new golden rule:  if i e-mail you back
with my address, (i will answer any questions, of course)  you have basically
agree to send me your tape (i do 1:1 so nothing is in this for me).  with the
problems i have been having with mail lately, i get worried when i gave you
the go ahead and then do not receive anything from you.  if you plan to back
out, you must e-mail me.  and if you don't have time to buy a blank now, or
get to the post office, or whatever please don't ask me to copy for you now.
and since i can only take so many people, it is really unfair if you take
someone else's space.  ok?  fair enough?  if you would like to get in on this
offer, you agree to send me your tape no later than wednesday.  i (of course)
will e-mail you with more details and instructions if i can accomadate you.
:-)

ok, now that is out of the way...

secondly, i have been involved in quite a lot of trades recently.  maybe i am
just too trusting, but there were a few trades that i did not keep track of.
however, i *know* that i did not receive all of my stuff yet.  i also know
that i sent everything out.  so basically, i am posting this to the entire
list... if you agreed to trade with me, please send me what you owe me asap!
i don't want to get nasty about this, but i am also starting to get bitter
about trading.  i know that some people have owed me my tape(s) for over a
month!  if necessary, i will go back into my old old old e-mail files and
find out who owes me what, but this is your chance to send me my stuff
without another (next time, private) e-mail from me.  and if you have a
problem with the tape(s) i made for you, let me know so i can redo them.
don't just lose touch all together.

that said, i am expecting to receive some tapes within the next week, and if
i still feel i have been cheated, i will take further action and do a little
investigating.  (i know that all of the big time traders on this list can
agree with me on how shitty it feels to be cheated...)  <ok, so my mood is
slowly changing to pissy>

ok, i guess that is all.  if you choose to flame me, do it privately...

:-) karen

ps- oh, one more thing.  i set up some trades within the last two weeks.  i
was referring to trades that i set up back in august up there.  trust me, i
am not pissy at you if we just set something up...

i went and checked out amy pic, and i definatley think it is just a bad
picture, i am sure she is fine.  i am not photogenic, and most of my pictures
look about like that, even though in real life i look quite healthy.  though
she is photogenic, i think somebody who takes pics about as well as me
snapped that one.  camera too close, bright light behind photographer, making
her face look a little convex from being too darn close, hence the long, thin
appearance.  the bright light making her look ghastly pale.  i just got it
all figured out, heh!

grrrrrr...     i've been trying to listen to that soundcheck that's supposed
to be available on 24-hour webcast today at worldclassrock.com...   i went to
their site, and i see a picture of the girls, but clicking this just leads to
a description of what will be webcast when. i click the "listen" icon, and i
get connected to their live radio broadcast...   i've tried just about
everything on the page, and nothing is leading me to actually _hearing_ the
webcast of the girls.   anybody have any helpful hints?

thanks  :)

mmmm - i think that is definitely evident from there links with artists
like (for example...) natacha atlas on faye tucker. personally, this has
opened me up to other areas of music that i might not have considered
before, in the same way this list has. it'll be interesting to see how the
retrospective cd shows these links with other artists, and the use of more
and more unusual instruments.

on a completely nigc note, our family is buying a new computer soon - me
and my dad are splitting the cost 50/50. the specs are something like
pentium 3 750, 128mb memory and a 30gb hard drive - in general (and
opinions from some of the more it minded would be great), how long do
people think this is going to last me?

tomorrow.

incidentally, they're also going to be getting dar williams in studio c on

hkf's,

i don't think this has been posted yet, but it's from
the official site under news.  and does everyone know
what this means?!?!  point of hope - does anyone know
what song this is?!?!  it's a once dubbed desert sand
or my very persaonl favorite little darlin'!!!!!
here's a lyric that starts one of the last verses to
jog the memory:

"i said i've been all the way to alaska
to a town they call point of hope"

there is a goddess...
a+e=ig

"point hope f.o.i.a." by amy ray
amy ray talks below about "point hope" - a new track
that will be available for exclusive paid download
this week with all proceeds going to charity:
"i wrote pt.hope over the last few years as i was
thinking about the victims of the nuclear industry
cycle. on our 1995 honor tour we visited alaska and
supported an effort to bring more light to the
situation at a place called pt. hope. this is a place
where our government buried fallout material from a
bomb testing site in nevada in hopes of studying its
effects on the lichen-caribou-man foodchain. this
secret experiment was uncovered after the freedom of
information act forced the release of the records of
this crime.

"i thought about where the poisonous material
originated and all that had gone into bringing it to
alaska and its viscious man made journey which
sickened all who were touched by it. i read a haunting
article about an old indian woman who remembered
watching the nevada atomic bomb test as sort of an
intriguing family activity, unaware of the danger and
destruction to her land. i also read many testimonials
of cancer ridden miners who had brought the stuff up
from the earth. the nuclear industry has depended on a
lack of information and the exploitation of those that
have less money and power.

"now after years of sickness and environmental
catastrophies, the dangers of the uranium cycle are
becoming public knowledge. information is the power we
hold and we must not be intimidated by an industry
that has never held our health as a priority.

"we recorded this track live in august 2000. it was a
very moving experience because i think all of the
players got it. hope you enjoy the song.
aray."

it's not even a real picture of a t-shirt - take a close look at the
picture - it's just a (bad) graphic of a t-shirt with "indigo girls"
in white text overlayed! i would stay _far_ away from this one.

anyone remember when he came out publicly in support of the ayatollah's call
for salman rushdie to be killed by any muslim who saw him?  this "death
sentence"  is still in effect.  this is the reason natalie merchant had his
song "peace train"  removed from all subsequent editions of the 10,000
maniacs cd, "in my tribe."
too bad really, i like his stuff from the 70s, but i can't see supporting him
financially, in any way, now.
perhaps if he were to withdraw his support for the ayatollah.

i don't understand how anyone can support a
call to assassinate someone just because they said something offensive
to someone's religious
views. it makes one wonder what this world is comming to?

oh my....let's not start in on the whole cat stevens/salman rushdie thing...
he was widely misquoted on that but did not stand up to defend himself
at the time because he was avoiding the media at that time in his life.

i'm going to come down on a (mayhap) unpopular side here.  cat stevens
believes that "the satanic verses" was a crime against islaam.  and
according to islamic law, the penalty for that crime is death.  like it or
not, it is steven's prerogative to believe whatever he wants.

this is from yusuf's press release on the subject, which can be read
here:  http://www.catstevens.com/articles/00013/index.html

"my only crime was, i suppose, in being honest. i stood up and
expressed my belief and i am in no way apologizing for it. i expressed the
islamic view based on the qur'an, the prophet's sayings (peace and
blessings be upon him) and the rulings of the caliphs and renowned schools
of islamic jurisprudence.

however, that is not to say i am encouraging people to break the law or
take it into their own hands: far from it. under the islamic law, muslims
are bound to keep within the limits of the law of the country in which
they live, providing that it does not restrict the freedom to worship and
serve god and fulfil their basic religious duties (fard'ayn). one must not
forget the ruling in islam is also very clear about adultery, stealing and
murder, but that doesn't mean that british muslims will go about lynching
and stoning adulterers, theives and murderers."

if you notice the actual fatwa
(http://www.catstevens.com/articles/00014/index.html), it
says nothing about rushdie's life at all - the bounty on his head was
placed by the hardline government in iran (a bunch of kooks by all
accounts), and stevens himself has never publically endorsed the bounty.

also, about a year ago, the bounty was rescinded by the iranian
government, which explains why rushdie has been seen out and about
occasionally.

as for the 10km cover of peace train, it's *really* good.  :)

regardless of the specific language quoted, he is/was a public figure, and at
the very least has some level of complicity, in that he never, to this day,
indicated that he disagrees with the death sentence.  in fact, in a recent
interview he danced around the question of rushdie quite adroitly.

i knew that wasn't the title.  i knew "little darlin'" wasn't the title!
when i first heard that song, i knew i would love it b/c of my
masochistic ways.  i'm sick, i tell you.  i put this song on a tape that
i run/jog to.  i put it on there over and over again.  yep, one whole
side of my running tape is "pt hope."  why?  b/c it pisses me off and i
run my best when in that state.  sure, it ain't healthy mentally perhaps,
but i still like that song.

it chills me.  and i've seen enough evil to chill me.  i've seen so much
crap that i wonder why i'm still here among the living.  that song
probably is my favorite amy song.

it incorporates studies of ecology (always a cycle - even if it's an
unnatural cycle like radiation in the food chain).

it uses emily's good lead guitar playing.  it's beautiful musically even
though it consists of amy's staple chords --- e and a!  (might just stand
for eeeeeemily and aaaaamy, and have y'all noticed that the e's are
primarily em and the a's are sometimes am?).

but, i retreat back to the point of my post:  i put this song on an
entire tape (recorded it over and over again) for a running tape.
typically a "running tape" for me consists of a polly harvey / j.
hatfield / jean smith / amy ray mix, but with this song i run my best.
it's probably one of the slowest amy songs i know.  weird, huh?

-naturally,
chee

(i heard about this ordeal (pt. hope) during one of my sleepless nights
listening to art bell's radio show.  does anyone else like to turn off
all of the lights and listen to his show and get scared shitless?)

oh cool, someone else who feels about ms. merchant the same way
that i do. i adored the maniacs and was terribly bitter about the way
she unceremoniously dumped them so she could do everything "her
way" - going on to produce the type of self-centered music one would
expect from such a move. i know that people have artistic differences
and have to move on, but she just strikes me as terribly solipsistic.

hey all...just thought i'd share this lil piece of encouraging news.have
a superific day..

employers offer gays more benefits

washington (ap) - more employers - including more than a
fifth of fortune 500 companies
           - are offering health insurance coverage to the partners of
homosexual employees, according to a
report by a gay rights group. the study, by the
washington-based human rights campaign, found
that 3,572 companies, colleges and states and local
governments offered or have announced they
would offer health insurance covering their employees'
domestic partners. this was up 25% from a
year ago, when 2,856 employers extended such benefits. the
census bureau counted 6.9 million
workplaces in the country in 1998. the findings were included
in the group's annual "state of the
workplace for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered
americans." see full story

i respect ms. merchant's musical ability, but think she took a big
slide downhill without the maniacs, who have proven quite resilient --
vocally, mary ramsey rocks the house, although her diction is as precise
as a kindergarten teacher, an odd contrast to say the least.  and the
viola...the sweet, sweet viola...
as for natalie, i wish her well, but maybe she got her ego a little too
stroked by the critics -- ophelia = automatic for the people of the
90's?  doesn't rem deserve some credit?  :)

thanks so much to all those lovely folk who emailed my mother when i was in
hospital.  it was lovely for her to receive support from folk on this list.
i realise that since i am not a huge ig fan, i don't speak very much on the
list, but i do rather enjoy the list a lot and it was lovely to be reading
the mails in the hospital after the operation, which by the way went really
well.

thanks again,
sandy

btw i would have responded to individuals, but my hotel room only had this
odd email reader and the messages mother sent on to me deleted themselves or
more than likely i stuffed up and deleted them being unfamiliar with the
system.   but thanks to those folk, it really was very kind.

she didn't "dump" them, she specifically, years before the breakup stated
that she would, one day, move on to a solo career, i have an interview from
88 where she makes this very clear.

however - i've seen her solo a couple of time (was it me or was she just a
complete b$%ch at newport?) and after seeing the maniacs without natalie
(and seeing them right when eden came out, before they became "huge")
(although i always thought they were, but hey, the show i went to didn't
sell out!) mary is amazing, about the only thing i miss is never seeing
natalie doing verdi cries with the band.

ophelia as the next automatic for the people- blasphemy - aftp is quite
arguably the best album of the 90's, i mean - it isnt a poppy album - but my
god it captures the period so vividly. nightswimming, sweetness follows, man

i couldn't agree more. it's a truly great record. and i'll always remember the
first time i saw the "everybody hurts" video. my mom was in the room and when it
was over she just kept saying "wow." "wow." it was one of those moments when i
thought she really understood what music means to me, which is almost the same
as what life means to me.

and out of the woodwork crawls the hardcore natalie fan....:)  i never got the
original post, so i'm replying to this one.

she actually gave the other maniacs notice more than a year before she left.
she told them she was committed to our time in eden, but then she was leaving.
frankly, i really don't like 10,000 maniacs with mary ramsey.  i've heard both
albums and i saw them at the birchmere in february 99.  i was not impressed.

fwiw, i missed the original post but i assume you guys are talking about the
cover of peace train on in my tribe.  it was pulled from us pressings of the cd
after stevens supported the fatwa issued against salman rushdie (which someone
has probably already pointed out, but thats what i get for abusing my delete
key).

as for self centered music and all...to each their own.  i think it took some
guts to leave the maniacs after they got really big.  i'll admit that i
sometimes miss the more upbeat stuff.  i can't speak for the newport show, but
each time i've seen her shes been quite nice.

finally, aftp vs. ophelia.  i love ophelia, but aftp takes that one hands down.

i love that song....sigh....

i just think she did them a disservice....they got famous together...
and then she took the fame with her. the lead singer's voice is always
what people associate with the band. it's difficult to succeed without
that.   from all i've read the rest of the maniacs weren't too happy
about her leaving, and understandable so.

i think that the original poster meant that ophelia was a ripoff of
aftp, not a worthy successor.

though i adore aftp and find it to be reminiscent of what i love in rem,
(life's rich pageant, etc) and surely preferrable to monster and all the
other that theyve been putting out lately, i found it to be more of a throw
back to their college radio days (not saying that it's a bad thing, i love
that sound) than a soundtrack for the 90's.

wow, wacky... i've never seen a cybercast of an event i was
actually at. it's interesting how they manipulated the footage to make the
audience look bigger; there were actually only about 100 people there
(although i'm sure many more would have been, if they could.) i ended up
front and center for the webcast, and you can actually see me in a couple
of crowd shots (and one really scary blue-tinted closeup at the begining
of closer to fine) - i'm the exuberant one with the curly brown hair, big
nose and black tank top.

all this talk about cat stevens and natalie merchant reminds me of a 10,000
maniacs show that i saw at providence college in november 1989 (my freshman
year of college - and i'm still in school!!!)  mike r, knows i'm the
perpetual student!  i did take a few years off to work a little ;-)

anyway, the whole show somebody kept yelling out for natalie to sing "peace
train".  everytime this person yelled it out, she got this annoying look on
her face.  i couldn't really blame her, it was always at inopportune times.
towards the end of the show, this goon yelled it out again and she said that
the next person to yell out "peace train", they would be done for the night.
i had known that they didn't perform this song live, at least not a long
time, but i was told it was over a beef they had with their record label.
sure enough, during the quietest part of the show, natalie was playing solo
at the piano, i can't even remember what song it was now, but some goon
yelled out "peace train" and she stopped, picked up a bouquet of roses off
the piano and walked off stage.  needless to say, i was a little
pissed.......sitting front row center, i had watched her grow increasingly
more upset each time somebody yelled.  i wasn't pissed at her, more at the
moron who kept yelling, but i wasn't ready for the show to end!

back to lurking!!

yeah! okay, sounds like a good excuse to just continue to see more concerts
than myself at any given time

that's a feat in and of itself...

btw - igc - i will never forget the weekend 4/12-13/97 when mike and i (and
his fiancee and his brother) , went to unh and colby, he told his bro,
somehow, he would meet the ig that weekend - sure enough - amy pulled me up
for ctf at colby and you can , on the only known boot of the historic moment
of ig live shows, hear mr. paluzzi shouting obsenities that i was on stage.
of course after the show we stopped to buy beer and the stupid clerk asked
mike "if i had a few already". that exact moment some really cute colby
students came in and recognized me as "that guy onstage." needless to say -
i got the six pack i wanted! (unfortunately the girl who i gave my phone
number to never called)

luzi - ready for another trade - i got stuff you'll kill for...

ig has never done that, they are always far superior to the opening act!

1.  i think amy actually took that picture herself.  i (being the dork i
am) have taken plenty of self pictures, so i think i'm pretty sure that
she took that picture.  not that i think amy's a dork.  heck no, but i'm
just saying that it looks like she took her own picture there.  no, i am
the dork.  amy is not.  and i'm not saying that if you take pictures of
yourself that you're a dork.  you know what i mean.

2.  does anyone know how to download the "pt hope" song from the web
site?  my booted copy is good, but i would love to hear that studio jam.

i got into k's choice through the indigo girls (some igc for ya!). my local
record shop knew i liked ig and convinced me to pick up the k's choice sampler
with their live version of 'rockin in the free world' with the indigo girls.
ironically, i hated that song, but loved the other ks choice songs on the
sampler. i also love the song 'not an addict' from another one of their
albums...

yeah, it was awfully nice of her to tell us that we could download, but to not tell us where.

well, no offense to galileo fans but is there anything in writing that
says the girls have to play galileo every show? so they didn't play it
that night.the fact that they started doing closer to fine towards the
middle of their set,and that they're going on hiatus tells me that they
must get tired of the same thing night after night for years on in.

peace, and pleasant dreams everyone. :-)

luscious jackson put on such a bad show for the u2 popmart show i was
at, we had serious discussion on whether that was planned to elevate the
band.  i also had recurring nightmares about opening for u2 for several
years.  *yeesh*

with this webcast, it said it will be available for 24
hours.  do they keep re-playing it over and over for
24 hours or is it on some kind of schedule?  i noticed
that you yourself can't control it...you can't start
it at the beginning if it's not there.  i really want
to see it from the very beginning and hopefully not at
3am tonight, so does anyone know for sure if it will
still be here tomorrow and how often it will be
played?  i sure don't want to miss seeing it.

hey gang -

as pathetic as i am for checking email while on vacation, the number of
questions in my inbox as to the status of the shirts has led me to a
mass response rather than individual notes - this internet time is
costing me 30 baht/minute.

the shirts were ordered 2 weeks ago. many of you have still not paid.
please please please do. i don't want to go into debt on these again.
because there is no profit margin - i charge only what will allow me to
break even - if even one person doesn't pay ontime, i end up footing
that part of the bill until i can find someone else to buy the shirt.
it's a pain.

i am anticipating the shirts to be in my apartment when i return from
thailand next week. then, give me a week and i will start shipping to
everyone who has paid. i will email the list again once the shirts
arrive, or if i have any other news. if you haven't heard otherwise
from me, and you ordered a shirt, then i have received payment. those
of you who had not paid me as of a couple weeks ago, received a
reminder notice. i've only sent one reminder notice.

please do not email me in the next week or so. this is the last time
i'll be able to check email, so if you do need to get ahold of me, it
may be awhile before i even get your message.

thanks for your patience! :)

amy

ps - i'm just having a grand old time over here. i needed this, the way
my year has been.

hey folks,
i was just sending e-mail reminders to various people, and i thought i would
drop a line over here, since i haven't done that in a while.
i have a *great* gig coming up tomorrow night, thursday, if you're in the
baltimore area. it's at the vault, at 401 w. baltimore st., and tickets are
only $5. i'll be playing with my amazing band, which includes members of
disappear fear, steelman marker, and some other awesome groups.  doors are
at 9, we play at 9:30. as long as ig aren't in town, why not check me out?
:)
if you are interested, feel free to e-mail me for more details. my website
was killed by a malicious hacker, so if you want to check out a soundbyte go
to http://www.theorchard.com and search for my last name.

thanks and have a nice day,
sarah pinsker
reinventing1@mindspring.com

ps before the thread dies, i have to say that 10 000 maniacs was my favorite
band for years, and theirs were among the first songs i attempted on guitar
(along with stairway to heaven and closer to fine, of course). i think both
they and natalie merchant worked best together - i haven't been super
impressed with either since the split.

hkf's,

point hope or little darling has been played by amy 4
times according to lifeblood and to my recollection.
besides 12/27/98, 4/6/00 & 4/7/00 (one of those being
a spitfire) amy also played it at the 8/2/98 chiapas
benefit in decatur, ga.  here's the lyrics to this
chilling song:

http://www.lifeblood.net/lyrics/athruz/ldarling.html

but i still have no idea how to download it.
anyone???  it is listed on the old site under music:
www.indigogirlsonline.com but still no info as far as
downloading.

this was part of an email i received today from ngltf.  i think it one
of the very best ways to deal with fred phelps that i have seen to
date.  i was so impressed by the creativity and the positive message
that i just had to pass it on.  for those of you that don't know, danny
lee overstreet was killed by a man that opened fire in a gay bar in va
recently.

>>***roanoke activists plan to counter an appearance by fred phelps of
the westboro baptist church in kansas at wednesday's funeral services
for danny lee overstreet. phelps is notorious for picketing the
funerals of hate crime victims as well as people who died from
aids-related causes. roanoke activists are asking supporters to
contribute to a "phelps-a-thon" -- for each minute that phelps
preaches, more money will be collected for medical and counseling

it's really, really easy to pay amy with paypal!
there is no reason that everyone shouldn't be paid up by the time she
comes back!  :)

you know you're obsessed when...

you post a follow-up to your own post...  well, i just
saw something on the hte tour page that said "audio:
internet only release of the indigo girls' new song.
check back here for details!"  and i think i read on
the bbs that it would be through that site, so that's
why i checked there.  so it looks like hte will be the
place to go to get 'point hope'.  (although i like the
title little darling better...)

of course i feel like being nit picky when i have to be to class in 15 minutes
and have no time to write....just wanted to add in that it was played at
musikfest in 98 at the encore. totally beautiful, even kept the screaming
girls behind us quiet for most of the song. i circulated that boot a while
ago, i'm surprised it still says in lifeblood that the song is "unknown."

this isn't quite as productive, but at wow2000, the ecumenical gathering of

does anyone have any information about the clean

to know how to get tickets and all that stuff, if they
are still available.  also, if anyone knows anything
about the 2 shows in nc on oct. 26 and oct. 27, that
would be helpful too.  i live in south carolina (i
assume the indigo girls probably won't be coming back
here anytime soon) so i'd like to see them somewhere
as close as possible!  ticketmaster did not list these
concerts.
any info would be really really appreciated.

thanks y'all!

the aftershow description says that business or semi-formal attire is
requested.  talk about incongruous :-)  it's going to be like when they
testified in dc about low-power radio...amy, emily, and a bunch of people in
suits.

any listees planning on going?  the price tag is putting me off somewhat,
i'll confess, in spite of the added attraction of the 7th being election
day...

so i had been wondering about this mystery date...

but it is true...the indigo girls will be performing at the newport music
hall on 21 october (saturday!!!!!!!!!) at the newport music hall in columbus.

i called the venue directly...tix onsale either friday or saturday.  the
entire place is general admission, so i'm not freaking out about being on the
phone as soon as they go onsale.

michelle malone is the opening act... (!!!)

looks like i'll be back in ohio for a weekend!  i have a feeling i'll see
barb, twink, don, peggy, deidre, et all there!  and becky (now we have 2
chances (not 1) to beg them to play wild wild party in the loquat tree!)

anyway, thought i'd pass that new date on to y'all!

:-) karen

ps- completely off topic qustion:  on the to be expected '99 boot, does
anyone know where the version of winthrop came from?  i have a beautiful copy
on the sf '98 (warfield, 27th jan show) boot.  but it is not the same as on
the tbe 99 boot.  anyway...

o dear yes that is quite a photo.and she looks *thin*, i'd guess it might have
been shortly after her illness and surgery, those tend to make you look less
than your best.

>1.  i think amy actually took that picture herself.  i (being the dork i
>am) have taken plenty of self pictures, so i think i'm pretty sure that
>she took that picture.  not that i think amy's a dork.  heck no, but i'm

hey folks,

here's the lesbian news article excerpt which was
previously mentioned.  the url is
http://content.gay.com/channels/news/lesbnews.html

-sherlyn

---begin forwarded article---
road warriors - the indigo girls
(on love, politics and commitment)
by t.a. gilmartin

the crowd stood shoulder-to-shoulder, flesh pressed upon
flesh and crackled with electric anticipation while it waited
for the indigo girls to take the stage for their two-night
sold-out stint at los angeles' house of blues. each night
amy ray and emily saliers entertained and enchanted
their audiences, whipping it into a frenzy for one song and
slowing it down for a heartfelt grab your loved one's hand
and squeeze the next minute.

for the past twenty years saliers and ray have entertained
crowds with their earnest and folky writings. along the way
they have developed a loyal and loving following that has
grown with the duo. the love was evident at the house of
blues' shows when the normally reserved and stand-offish la
crowds sang in unison to old-time favorites like "galileo"
and "closer to fine."

being queens of la for two nights is a long way from the
inauspicious beginnings of this duo.  school-aged chums,
ray and saliers began playing together in high school. even
the lure of college couldn't separate the two and both soon
found themselves enrolled at atlanta's emory university.
after graduation they gave life as musicians a full-time
chance and were soon signed to epic records on the strength
of a successful independent release. they built their fan
base the old fashioned way: touring. the two road warriors
crossed and crisscrossed the us playing smoky bars and
night clubs. captivating fans with their melodies and their
southern gothic lyrical images that addressed love, politics
and religion.

fast-forward twenty years and very little has changed in the
indigo girls' modus operandi. they still tour endlessly. they
still invoke gothic images of the battles between man, the
church and the state, only now they occasionally write about
their grandmothers and their dogs. sure, their past two
studio albums have seen them experiment successfully with
electrified sound, but even guitar distortion can't hide the
lyrical and melodic beauty of a saliers or ray penned song...

i can speculate as to why the encore was not webcast:

1) this was the night of their bus driver's performance. that was the first
song of the encore. i don't know the name of the song, and amy and emily
were just kind of along for the ride (so to speak).

2) emily made a big mistake during the galileo solo, which lasted several
seconds. she seemed tired by that point and didn't pick it up until the
verse. it may not have been noticable to those who were at the show beyond a
momentary dissonance, but if you're a guitarist and you've made this mistake
(putting your left hand down on the wrong fret positioning), it stands out,
and it would probably stand out even more if you listened to it over and
over again on the loop.

i think i got my mp3 copy from brian clary--actually, i know that's where i
got it.  we could lobby him to put it back up, don't you think?

it's actually one of my favorite ig songs (or amy songs, but actually, most
of my favorite ig songs are amy songs, so.....)
and i got to see them do it live at the uh, 4/7/00 spitfire date at northern
il u (niu to those in the know.)   it was haunting.  i was giddy.  possibly
the happiest night of my life.

i tried to explain this song to my spanish 4 college class the other day
because we were talking about nuclear power, and this kid seemed to think
that all electricity should be nuclear power and that radioactive elements
could be buried and they'd be fine, and would hear a word of what i was
saying.  i wanted to explain the part about testing the uranium on
lichen/caribou and then people, but la senora doesn't except a word of
english in her class.  is there a spanish word for lichen?  probably, but i
didn't know it.

anyway.

hey y'all,

due to the number of parties interested in this mp3 and the size of the
file, i've uploaded it to my internet hard drive.  the url is:
http://www.freedrive.com/asp/postfoldershortcut.asp?fsc=13079584
in order to download this file, you'll have to sign up for an account with
freedrive (it's free and only takes about a minute)  just follow the
instructions on the page and it'll lead you to my shared file folder and you
can download from there.  a fellow list member has also offered to put the
file on a webpage...he will be posting the url for that when he's got it up.
if neither of the above is a good delivery vehicle for you, i am still
willing to e-mail the file to you just be sure that your e-mail program will
accept files of this size (4.52mb)

hey y'all,

just a little clarification here regarding the mp3 i'm sending out.  this
version of the song is the one available on the to be expected '99 cd-r...it
is, most likely, not the same as the version being offered on the hte
website.  with that said, it is still available for download and e-mail if
you want it.  sorry for the confusion.

i didn't watch/listen this time around (i had recorded it onto md last time
it was broadcasted), but mandy was right.  they did do galileo.  i guess for
some reason it was just cut this time.

anyway, i think we had this discussion a few years ago about closer to fine.
there is no "rule" that galileo (like c2f) needs to be performed at every
show.  :-)  personally i'd rather see a more diverse set list than songs like
galileo and c2f at *every* show.  but that is just my opinion.

oh gawwwd.  see what has started now?  now y'all got me thinking about new york
too.
i've already made my plans for earth challenge, but i just feel guilty, because
i'm not going
to any benefit shows.  the price really isn't as bad as i thought it was - it's
bad enough, but
not that bad.

on the one hand, if i go, i'll be able to see my good friends and on the other
hand, bob (my husband) would have an absolute fit (and, please, let's not even
discuss my mother-in-law). hmmmm....what to do, what to do?

.....to be continued.

fda approves abortion pill, ru-486
by lauran neergaard
.c the associated press

washington (sept. 28) - the food and drug administration on thursday approved
u.s. use of the abortion pill ru-486, a major victory for those who battled
for 12 years to bring the early-abortion method to this country.

proponents say the pill, which has been used by millions of women in 13
countries, could transform abortion in the united states by making it more
accessible and more private. but it can be used only in the earliest days of
pregnancy.

it could be available to doctors within a month.

''for those who choose to have an early termination of their pregnancy, this
is a reasonable medical alternative,'' said fda commissioner jane henney.

anti-abortion organizations have fought to keep ru-486 out of the united
states since the drug debuted in france in 1988. they pledged to continue the
fight.

hi folks!  this is a plea for forgiveness!  i have four copies of the
great woods ppv ready to mail, but i still can't figure out who they go
to.

thanks to two solid weeks of torrential rains a a few weeks ago, we have
lost much computer time.  we live on a military base, where the
utilities are older than dirt, and since the rain started soaking the
ground, we've lost power, cable(we have a cable modem), and phones so
much that i haven't been online in a week, and now i can't find my list
of  people who i owe the videos to.  i also owe a cd copy of "wild, wild
party..." to someone.   please email me privately with your addresses,
and i will make a major post office run tomorrow am.  thanks again to
everyone for your patience!

hey all,

as i was driving home i heard "leaving" on the radio.  it was the first time
i heard the studio version (though i have the song memorized thanks to my
boot collection and being at the berkeley show).  it is beautiful.  one of
the radio stations (i never listen to the radio.  only when i am changing
tapes or md's) is really plugging radiobox because they are sponsoring the
chicago hte show.  the dj said that the album cover has the cutest picture of
amy and emily when they were younger.  i have seen the cover, but not close
up.  anyway...

:-) karen (who is so thrilled to see ig two times in one week)

the aftershow description says that business or semi-formal attire is
requested.  talk about incongruous :-)  it's going to be like when they
testified in dc about low-power radio...amy, emily, and a bunch of people in
suits.

any listees planning on going?  the price tag is putting me off somewhat,
i'll confess, in spite of the added attraction of the 7th being election
day...

i don't post here much but i am going to this show. i too must confess that
i ordered the tickets before i saw the dress code. i never get dressed up
for anything but the prospect of seeing ig in this setting on election day
might just make it worth it. i will be sure to hit that open bar and get
over the fact that i will feel like a dork. the friend that i am going with
raised the good point that they are having a black tie dinner before the
"afterparty" and probably don't want a bunch of "riff-raff" to mingle with
during cocktails. of course she spent all of yesterday afternoon laughing at
me when i told her we would have to dress for the event. if you knew me
you'd laugh too.

i still think the money is going to good use. if you can afford it i say go
for it! it could be quite an evening.
