hey...

<<ditto- if anyone has a point of hope bootleg they would be willing to copy
for b&p please let me know, i have three times now to download it with no
luck. i will donate to hte, thanks!>>

so i've been thinking this over and here's what i've come up with.

proposal:
due to the number of people who for whatever reason cannot get point hope to
their satisfaction (being mac owners, outside the us, computer illiterate
etc.) i will make cds for people of the new tracks:
devotion, leaving, point hope foia, tower and borders bonus discs, and the
reissue bonus tracks (tracks that are already on early recordings / killer
b-sides / shades of indigo excepted).

providing, everyone who requests these will sign a statement to the effect
that they already own and/or have paid for the recordings in question
(namely retrospective, the internet download, and nomads... / rites...
reissues) and are just asking me to make them a 'fair use' archive backup.

as far as i can tell this would be legal. and more importantly ethical, no?

any ideological objections to this proposal can be made to my private email.
if someone comes up with a decent reason why this isn't a good idea then
this offer will become null and void. until then anyone who is interested
can email me for further details.

i already made myself a copy and put together some artwork if anyone's
interested (it's at www.go.to/neilytones - i called it 'retroactive').

ok, so i paid for it and all...and have only been able to listen to it once!

i renamed it "amy ray - point of hope" and now when ever i try to play it, i
get an "error - not a valid mpeg message."  yeah, i know it was stupid to try
to rename it, but now, even after i've gone to the site to renew my right to
it or whatever, it still doesn't let me play it.

anyone have any suggestions?

mime-version: 1.0

i believe this article may help people understand
better what the votes for nader will end up doing.
i'm voting for gore but it makes me worried that the
nader supporters will end up ushering in a bush
presidency... quite a scary thought, folks!  those of
us in the gay community cannot afford to have bush
come into office - it will no doubt set back the whole
movement by at least ten years.  voting for nader
ultimately ushers in bush presidency.
___________________________________

dear friend of moveon,

it now looks like nader will cost gore the presidency.
in key swing states -- washington, oregon, minnesota,
maine, new mexico -- nader has garnered enough support
to throw the electoral votes to bush.  and those votes
could very likely make the difference.  even in key
battleground states where nader support is thin, like
florida, michigan, nevada and pennsylvania, he could
take enough votes from gore to swing the electoral
votes to bush.  latest polls even show gore at risk of
losing california with nader pulling away 6% of the
vote.  with the election tightening in every state of
the union, no state is safe.

we've been flooded by emails asking what we can do.
the nader camp is deeply divided over whether they
should endorse gore -- at least in swing states.  many
say they never got into the race to play the spoiler.
what was positioned as a safe protest vote has now
become a kind of kamikaze vote.  the specter of a bush
presidency looms large.

let ralph nader hear your feelings.  his contact

nader has a lot of power in this situation?  what
should he do?

please carbon copy us on your email to ralph nader at

think.

as a sample, we've attached below an open letter that
has been floating around the net.  however, a
personalized message is always better.

an open letter to ralph nader

[please sign this email with your own name and send it
to ralph nader at  campaign@votenader.org.   then
forward it to every person in your email address book,
to the newspapers and broadcasters in your area, and
anyone else you can think of.  with the race so close
and such a short time until the election, it's time
for action.]

dear mr. nader:

over the years you have done a great deal for the
american people.   now you are about to do great harm.
your candidacy in this election has been important.
you have raised serious issues that need to be
addressed.  but now your message is out and it's time
to set aside ideology and step aside. if you don't you
will ensure that george w. bush is our next president.
and if he is elected with a republican majority in
congress, the american people stand to lose most of
the social, economic and environmental progress we
have made in the last thirty years.   if there is any
question in your mind of this, consider the following:

the supreme court

bush will appoint activist conservative judges who
will actively seek to take away a woman's right to
choose.

they will also support the corporate interests you
have been so gallantly fighting against by promoting
"tort reform" which, as you know, is another way to
disempower the average citizen and take away his or
her right to sue corporations who damage them or cause
death.

and the bush supreme court will be anti-environment
and side with the exploiters and polluters who so
willingly sacrifice the public health and safety on
the alter of short term profit.

the deficit and the middle class

while gore intends to use the surplus to pay down the
deficit, bush plans to refund a large part of it to
the wealthy.  he says it's their money and they should
get it back.  well, it's their deficit as well and
they should help pay it off.

at this time the nation is almost five trillion six
hundred billion dollars in the red.  that's
$5,600,000,000,000.   over the past ten years we have
paid over three trillion dollars in interest.  this
year we will pay an estimated three hundred and
sixty-two billion dollars in interest.  that's
$362,000,000,000, mr. nader.  about $1,400 for every
man woman and child in this country.  do you have any
idea what that amount of money could do for the
environment and health care and education if it was
not being wasted on interest?

next year we will pay even more.  and the years after
that still more. and instead of paying down the
deficit it will grow larger.  why?  so bill gates and
paul allen and all the other multimillionaires can
have their much needed tax brakes.   and if bush is
elected and then inheritance tax is eliminated, the
middle class will be asked to make up the hundreds of
billions of dollars in those lost revenues as well.

the environment

as governor of texas bush has put the polluters in
charge of the state's environmental program with the
result that texas is now an environmental disaster.
although he doesn't dare articulate it during the
campaign, the republican agenda includes doing away
with the environmental protection agency.  if it's not
eliminated completely it will be emasculated to the
point where it exists in name only.

and in service of his major contributors, the oil and
coal conglomerates, bush and the republicans will
encourage oil exploration in environmentally sensitive
areas and the burning of fossil fuels to produce
electricity etc.  if you think global warming is bad
now, just give a bush administration a few years to
pay of its debt to these special interests.

and whether you want to admit it or not, mr. nader, al
gore has been one of the strongest advocates for
environmental protection.  he recognized the danger of
global warming before most people had heard the term.
and he almost single handedly, and against the advice
of all his political advisors, saved the kyoto
accords.  but a rabid republican congress has blocked
their implementation along with almost every other
environmental effort put forth by the clinton
administration.  you're correct. clinton/gore haven't
got a lot done.  but if you'd been president these
past eight years, neither would you.

campaign finance reform

you warn us of the growing power and influence of the
corporations on our lives and our democracy yet you
threaten to help defeat the only candidate with any
chance of doing the one thing that will help solve
this problem.  you know bush and the republicans will
not support campaign finance reform.  but gore has
promised that he will work with john mccain in his
mission to bring about the reform we need.  why on
earth would you actively work to keep this from
happening?

social security

you know bush plans to divert hundreds of billions of
dollars to wall street.  it seems like a great scheme
while the market is going up as it has been for the
past several years.  but what goes up also comes down.
while this risky scheme may put a few billion in the
pockets of the brokers and underwriters, it will turn
social security into social insecurity and endanger
the retirement of many people who unfortunately don't
have as much money as you do.

mr. nader, you have stated publicly that you would
rather see bush win than gore.  you seem to believe
that bush will make things so bad that the country
will rise up.  this reminds me of the days when
doctors bled patients in order to cure them.  the
problem was the patients often died from the treatment
rather than the disease.

as someone who agrees with you on so many things and
would love to see you continue your campaign to
educate and enlighten us about the things for which
you care so much, i ask you to do the right thing.
the election is too close and now is the time for you
to throw your support behind gore.  if you help bush
win you will have single handedly done more damage
than any well meaning person could possible conceive
of.  please don't let this happen.

sincerely,

are you talking about the reissue or the original? i've never seen the
artwork for
the new one. but if you're talking about the old
one, i never really thought about it,  it's just a design to me, but who
knows? i love the tatoo on amy's arm though.

btw, has anyone been to indigogirlsonlne.com?
that is wonderful music that they have. it comes in wonderful on my
webtv unit too, it's not at all like realplayer, or any of the webcasts,
i've seen. does anyone know if that's background to any of the new ig
songs? i'd really love to hear ig  singing words and harmonies to that
song!

how is it that webtv can't access point hope because it's <<too much for
webtv to handle>>
yet webtv can access that music?  just don't get it. anyways.

i'm going to try and go off to the bastion of capitalism right now (the
mall of america, and  you've got it, i'm a died-in-the wool minnesotan,
and in particular a proud st paulite!)  i have nothing else to do, i'm
not a died-in-the-wool
capitalist though, but they do have some really beautiful jewelry, and i
left a book at sears.

who knows , maybe i'll pick-up retrospect.

not to continue a thread here (so please email me in private, but you
know in the '92 election ross perot picked-up 25% of the vote, not that
nader is a ross perot, but  i disagree with the notion that people who
vote for nader will be resposible for getting bush into office. that to
me is an attempt by gore to steal votes away from my candidate.  ralph
nader is a threat to both bush, and gore. (note bush's using nader's
comment, against al gore, and taking the credit for the credit. worries
me
me sick i don't want bush as president either. i have just as much  of a
dissaffinity for al gore>)

this election, i'd like to make a statement that i don't like my choice
of candidates this year...al gore is not the environmentalist that he
claims.
sure he appears to be supporting the environment here in the u.s. but in
columbia his occidental oil company is driving oua people off their
lands to drill more oil, columbia is also a country that doesn't have as
many environmental laws, and often in third world countries they make
laws that they don't enforce, so theu.s. companies often go to those
countries so they can get away with polluting the air, and water without
cleaning up.
and in the long run that kills people, making them sick enough to die.

vote for the lesser of two evils, and you get evil.
if i vote for nader, i refuse to take responsibiliy
for putting bush in office, the real responsibility for gettig bush in
office lies on those who vote for him plain and simple.  nader is my
choice. he supports almost everything i believe in, and i'm proud that i
was taught all my life to vote for whoever comes closest to my
values, and bush and gore don't even come close.

that's how one is supposed to vote, if we don't vote our conscience,
than we are responsible for playing the same game as gore and bush:
politics  the way to beat bush is to convince people to go for nader, if
all  liberals on the list would convince their friends that nader is
their man nader would be getting so many more votes without putting bush
in office,it scares the shit out of me that liberals are buying into the
scare tactics that gore people are using!  we're all so afraid.

if we get bush, yes we might get an evil guy, but we ourselves do not
put bush in office....bush people did. and if he is as evil
as we think,if he keeps all his promises, we can all see to it that he
is in for only four years. we can vote him out !

i hope you will re-consider where the
<<vote-for-nader-is-a-vote-for-bush, is coming>> the democrats would
have us believe that it's coming from swing states. because they want to
stay in power. why else would they try steal votes from nader? for
crying out loud they didn't even want to be seen with the guy on tv. and
now look at him!
he's scared shitless! he knows he could lose!

iif he loses, and bush gets it, that will still send a message: we want
third parties included in the election process. and i doubt they will
ever ignore  third parties again.

think about it

peace

no no no
stop!

i, someone with deep convictions who is politically minded, say take this off
the list.

i am a nader supporter.  i've heard all there is to hear and have even been
harassed on aol cause i have nader/laduke in my profile.
i'm not going to change my mind, and wish we could just call a truce on this.

please, consider the fact that 1) there have been requests to stop and 2)
probably no one is being convinced especially with the harassing "when bush
is elected it'll all be you're fault"  emails.

if you want to really want to harass a nader supporter, at least take it off
listmail.
email me, i could use the abuse.

sorry i know i know i said no more nicgs for a while but i just had to add
this:

nader advisors have already stated that four years of bush as president
would be a good thing for the green party and naders 2004 campaign - call it
a wake-up call to america if you will . . . personally i think it is a very
costly wake up call!

i'm a nader supporter.  and i've kept silent on this issue on this list
until now.  but i do want to respond to these comments:

>if we get bush, yes we might get an evil guy, but we ourselves do not
put bush in office....bush people did. and if he is as evil
as we think,if he keeps all his promises, we can all see to it that he
is in for only four years. we can vote him out !<

right.  absolutely.  but the supreme court justices that he nominates -- and
he may get to nominate as many as three -- will be with us for a generation.
this is not a trivial issue.  at all.

*many* of nader's supporters are now saying that folks who live in swing
states should vote for gore.  this is not coming solely from the democrats.
it's coming from nader's supporters.  and it's no coincidence that the bush
camp have been running a pro-nader commercial.

>iif he loses, and bush gets it, that will still send a message: we want
third parties included in the election process. and i doubt they will
ever ignore  third parties again.<

i'm sorry, but this is not the first time in recent memory that a third
party has been significant.  remember ross perot?  he got a huge chunk of
the popular vote.  so let's not create a fiction that nader is the first
third party candidate to make a loud noise.

guess what: if gore wins swing states because nader supporters backed him at
the polls -- and there are solid ways of tracking this -- that too will send
a strong message about the power of third-party candidates.

i'm no supporter of the system.  i'm no supporter of gore.  but the supreme
court is not a non-issue, and if bush wins he'll tilt the court in a way
that will have an impact on us all for *way* more than four years.  if you
go to the nation's website there's a lot of very intelligent discussion on
this question (and by intelligent, i don't mean that i agree with it all
either).

please just remember that the president doesn't just get to name whomever
he wants to the bench.  his nomination must be approved by the congress.
i think that congressional seats are much more important than the
presidency.  some people's comments imply that the president has some kind
of dictatorial power.  remember, there are three branches in the u.s.
gov't.
also, republican presidents have been hit or miss with their nominees.
there are pro-choice nixon and reagan justices on the court right now.
abortion rulings are not all that common and a president must find a
"approvable" nominee to send to congress.  these "approvable" nominees are
not very likely to have made a ruling on an abortion issue.  and very
extreme judges, like robert bork for example, are almost never approved.
if bush is elected, it will be embarrassing, but no one is going to
convince me that we'll be plunged back into the middle ages.

ridiculous already.  i can be as politically minded as any one of you

i don't really think that nader is going to be swayed by any of this....open
letters or otherwise.  he has said that he doesn't see much difference
between the two.  he also believes that (my paraphrase here) that if bush is
worse it will help to get people active to make a better change for this
country.  i think what he means is sometimes things have to get worse for
things to get better.  the main thing is that he looks at the two parties as
two heads on one body....the republocrats.

i read a book this summer by marianne williamson titled healing the soul of
america.  it literally changed my life and how i view politics.  she talks
about what is wrong with this country and what we have to do to heal it.
she doesn't blame the politicians or the corporations.  and i agree with
her.  the responsibility lies with us.  we are the ones who let the
corporations take over.  we are the ones who let go of our politicians.  our
apathy is what has made democracy taste so sour.  the first thing we have to
do is to get involved and vote for who we believe in.  we have to vote for
the person who most closely mirrors our beliefs.  for me that person is
ralph nader and the green party, no contest.  if i vote for al gore just to
keep bush out of office i am not following my highest ideals.  i am voting
out of fear, instead of love.  i am voting from darkness instead of light.

one of the main problems in our political system today is the total lack of
third party involvement.  third parties have always played a big role in our
country's developement, until the last few decades.  the election commission
have made it much more difficult for third parties to get exposure.  the two
big parties have done this for themselves to keep the others out.  i don't
believe things will change without third (and fourth) parties becoming part
of our process.  we have to make that happen by voting for them when they
mirror our ideals and beliefs.  and this will never happen if we keep voting
out of fear to keep someone else out of office.  as long as we think that
way, we will always be tied in to two candidates and that is a shame.

it is my belief that being worried about bush is short term thinking.  if i
like nader and vote for him, i'm thinking long-term, and that is best for
this country.  of course, i don't have to worry about anything because i'm
in nebraska and bush will win big here.  if i lived in a swing state, i
would have to think harder, but i would like to think i'd still vote nader.

on a side note, here in the land of the ignorant (nebraska, that is) we have
a defense of marriage amendment that will probably be voted into the
constitution this election.  i have never been so ashamed of any state i
have lived in in my life.  it just makes me ill to think of how many
ignorant hate/fear based people that i live with in this state.  it is just
unbelievable.

love and peace,
dan

i saw ani last night at mullin center, sara lee opened.  her stuff was
definitly interesting.  as for emily's lyrical contribution, i don't think
it was her best lyrics she's ever written, slightly below par, my opinion of
course.  the highlight of sara lee's set was in "make it beautiful" written
by ani, eric "green" (one of the back up singers) going "bowowowowow"  that
cracked my up.  other highlights of the night where ani's three broken
strings and nail, and getting sara lee to sign my copy of her album.
one of the back up singers on the album is gail ann dorsey.  that name
sounds really familiar.  anyone know who that is?
leaving the parking lot we saw a car with an indigo girls bumper sticker and
a rowing sticker.  my dad (who was driving) hinked the horn at them.  so if
your on here "hey"
better shut up now.

i think she also played on dar's latest album, "the green world" but
could be wrong.

i did just hear this song on the radio the other day for the first
time. the first time on the radio, that is, i have the cd. (and it's a
great cd by the way) always surprised and delighted to hear emily's voice
on the radio unexpectedly (which is basically any time you hear emily's
voice on the radio...:0)

it's a great song. i like it a lot and i think emily adds a lot to it.

my god,

with so many posts about it, it seems that this is what the list wants to
talk about.  and for every 10 political posts, we get one post complaining
about it.  stop trying to tell the list what to talk about. get over it for
chrissakes.  i delete ani posts and melissa posts all of the time.  it
reminds me of being at earth challenge yesterday, and when a representative
from georgia said that she was sure that we weren't just there for the
music, some woman in front of me just laughed at her and said, very loudly,
"you want to bet? when are the girls coming on?"  and then turned to her
girlfriend and said, "i wish this dyke would get off the stage."  it is just
sick.  that was a rally, a very important one where a lot of important
things were said, and people just used it for a free concert.  the indigo
girls supported it for a reason, they played at it for free, and the least
we could have done was listen to what the speakers had to say.  if you were
that woman, shame on you! we are talking about political people on this
list, and politics are going to come up.  and they have just as much right
being here as those posts that ask for the fifteenth hundredth time, "what
is your favorite ig song?" (and believe me, if i read another one of those
posts, i could just puke).

the only thing that you have to be to be on this list is an indigo girls
fan, but the great thing is that we are all people with ideas.  and this is
an election year.  with a very close election. we are going to talk about
it.  and i don't know what i find more annoying.  political debate, or
repetitive, angry, ignorant posts asking for it to stop.

take care, mis amigos,

scott

hey all here's my idea, i've created a new list, anyone can join, its for
the presidential candidate political discussions that we have been asked to
take off this list:
its an egroups/onelist, send email to:

nigc@egroups.com

it will be unmoderated and closed after the election unless of course
someone wants to take over it (i really don't have time to keep it).
thanks,

that's funny, i know exactly which one disgusts me more.
one of the reasons i admire the indigo girls so much is that they
don't just sing about politics; they go and do something about it. mostly,
though, i just like the music. i love and admire the political content in
their songs, but if the music were just noise, i would turn it off.
i have strong beliefs. i am politically active. the fact that i
don't talk about those things on this list doesn't make me any less a
"good" indigo girls fan; it just means i am complying with the list faq
which specifically asks that we limit extended discussion of nigc.
following the rules may seem kind of like third grade, but it's
the basis of democracy, here and everywhere. honestly, it astounds me that
there are adults of voting age who are unable to follow the rules of
mutual respect on an e-mail list. what really depresses me are the few
along that group who call themselves better citizens for it.
making change is not about talking big. if you believe what you
say so strongly, do something about it in an appropriate forum. join an
environmental list. join a human rights group. here and now, it's just
noise.

hey y'all,

haven't seen a review, so i'll post a quick review
right now.  and i got there a little late so i really
only got to see the girls, but i could think of worse
things.

setlist:

closer to fine
ozilline (w/ mm)
peace tonight (w/ mm & charlene)
shame on you (w/ mm)
power of two
chickenman (w/ mm & michael lorant)
i don't wanna know (w/ mm)
devotion
galileo

e1: wild horses (w/ mm)
e2: least complicated

note: unfortunately, right before devotion on the
setlist it says 'leaving' so too bad they replaced
that one w/ i don't wanna know with michelle.

centennial park, right next to the cnn center, philips
arena and down the street from the tabernacle - was a
beautiful setting for this earth challenge - georgia
clean energy, clean air festival.  the skies were
clear and the weather was abso-smurfly beautiful -
even the grass was real comfy to relax on...

ctf was a great way to start it out & then amy's
ozilline is always great to hear - especially with
that awesome ending: 'what a blessed sky...'.  then
peace tonight is a good happy song that went along w/
the nice festival atmosphere.

first 'wow' moment: in chickenman, when the slow part
before the last refrain-part where they slow down and
are singing the 'i am an only child...' (real slow
w/out much guitar at all) - my friend at her first
show goes: 'holy cow!'  and i was like, 'you're right'
cause amy, emily, michelle & michael just sounded
amazing singing all together - especially with the
late afternoon sky & atlanta skyline in the backround.
very cool moment that i really was glad the
ig-live-newbie pointed out to me.

devotion towards the end, was pretty darn amazing too.
first time i heard it live and it just has such a
great feel to it - definitely like the 'that's what i
should do...' part that repeats a bunch of time...
and then again, i'm an amy person.  8-)

second wow moment: wild horses w/ mm.  hadn't heard
this live in awhile and it was pretty amazing.
michelle took lead on a few verses and gave this song
a nice different sounding shot-in-the-arm but when
they sang the first chorus w/ that beautiful harmony
'couldn't drag me away...' it was really cool in that
time-stopping kind of hold your breath moment.

and funny moment after wild horses, susan alzner (one
of the directors of earth challenge and sometimes
photographer for ig & hte stuff) was giving away
prizes for a question on the back of a survey card and
said 'are you ready for ig to come back for one more
song?!'  and she had been mistaken since wild horses
was their last song - but the girls came out anyway
and said something like 'well, we didn't know we had
one more song but we'll play one anyway, it's a
sing-a-long'  and then they went into least
complicated which became our bonus track of the show.

so all in all, the great harmonious music went
wonderfully well with the beautiful setting - and
hopefully everyone who was there learned a little bit
about alternative forms of energy (such as solar
energy used to power the show) and other ways to
improve the quality of our air.  (esp. since atl is so
bad!)

happy hallow's eve!
... boo! ...

well, i thought i'd apologize for continuing the political debate.  i was
done until somoene said something i needed to reply to ;-)

but something i'd *like* to do is do a little "list-vote"
dont send it to the list!!

please send me who you're voting for, i'll tabulate it.  i'll probably stop
it in a week.
i don't even care if you're eligible to vote here in the us.  just lemme
know who you're voting for!!

please also, only vote once!!
but i think you knew that :)

also,
hmmm, i've had my sys t-shirt for awhile now.  i'm thinking maybe i'd want
to trade, if anyone else has had a shirt for awhile now.

i just think i need a change, anyone interested?

its obviously worn, there's a little hole in it that it had when i got it in
'98 (or was it '97?), and even a little bit of sort of purpleish
discoloration....

but its loved!

anyway, anyone want to trade?  i just wanna give it to someone who wants it!

ok, enough

well, after that wonderful review that mike gave, what more
can i say.  beautiful day, great entertainment, i met so many
wonderful people and ah, the girls.  love's recovery was also
part of the set list. the funny thing about that was during the song
amy started to giggle a little because she was watching the little
baby in michael lorrant's (spelling?) arms who was trying to escape.
i was really getting into the song (i'm an emily person), but when i
looked over at amy, i started to lose control and was laughing too
(shame
on me).  devotion was amazing (i think that's my favorite right now).

we didn't have the large list meet that we planned on, but it was
still fun.  it was so nice meeting everybody (hi to ron, mike, jane,
richard, megan & friends and everybody else i missed) and i have
to thank amanda (from alabama) and her friends for watching my space
and sharing their chairs with me.

i remember last year on the way home after the tabernacle shows, i was
so depressed that it was over that i actually had to run into the
bathroom
on the airplane and cry it out little.  (don't laugh at me, mike) i
promised myself that this wouldn't
happen again.  well, guess what - i did it again.  i was listening to
the
retrospective and when leaving came on - i completely lost it.  i was
trying
to blink it away but the tears just wouldn't stop.  then i saw the
attendant
coming down the aisle with the cart so i took off to seek solace once
again
in the bathroom (i hope noone was waiting to get in). oh well, at least
i
have new york to look forward to.

well, back to work.
happy monday

been putting this off for a couple of days (to recover, i guess).

a few more notes about the show.

early in the morning, the grass was wet and so were our butts.  but it was
somehow okay.  really enjoyed myself.  left florence, al at 3am to get to
atlanta, drove back that night.  tired really wasn't the word.  but overall
it was worth it.

tom l (i can't remember how to spell his last name) was good.  the last song
he did about loving each other no matter what they say or are or choose to
be brought tears to my eyes.  check him out.  he made me think i was at
woodstock.

a few degrees could very well be the next music that i buy.  the lead
singer's voice was beautiful and fragile.  some old guy kept asking her to
marry him and stuff.  it was funny.

gentle readers totally did a good set.  my boyfriend william really dug
them, so we had to listen to their album a lot yesterday.  april, my best
friend, fell in love with the lead singer (then met amy ray and got her
autograph), and had to buy their album too.  crazy what lust will make you
do.  :)

speech was amazing.  he took an otherwise lazy crowd and turned that mother
out.  the woman who was singing with him was equally amazing.

michelle did a good show.

kevin kinny was amazing.  i was just enthralled with his music.  his son
playing the harmonica was also awesome.  anyone know the names of the songs
that he did???  help me, i'm interested in getting into his music.

ig--the best i've ever heard them.  the show wasn't long enough, but that's
okay, because they had a nature curfew (there were no lights to light them
after dark).  the crowd was really into it.  that's always a good thing.
chickenman (with that song put into the middle) was spine-tingling.  it's
one of my favorite songs, and i'm glad they're playing it again.

the speakers:  the georgia representative (her name escapes me) was amazing.
she made me want to storm southern power and the capitol.  jane fonda was
dressed in a clown suit and told us to all go buy rediculously expensive
hybrid cars and perform rediculously expensive maintenance on our house to
take ourselves off from the grid.  her advice was very practical.  amy and
emily (especially emily's speech about dumping nuclear wastes on
reservations) were amazing and inspiring.

all in all, a great experience.  i can't wait to get my pictures developed.

have a good day, all, and let's try to get along with each other more.  the
list has been angry lately.  and i know that i have been angry too.  i
believe that it is that we all see that there is so much at stake in this
election, and the fear of that blinds us to everything else.  i apologize if
i have offended anyone.  if i have, i'll try to make it up to you.

take care, mis amigos,

scott

was she really dressed in a clown suit? *trying to picture jane fonda in a
clown suit and finds it quite comical* but one note, honda has a hybrid car
(honda insight) out now that is actually competitively priced. we are hoping
to get one next year.

yes - jane was in fact in a clown suit(rather fitting if you actually paid
attention to what she said, but that is another story). she said she was on her
way to a halloween parade with her grandson.

btw if anyone nabs a copy of the speech set from earlier in the day and is up
for a trade, let me know privately.

hate to state the most blatantly obvisous igc and the presidental
campaign...

when a freaking vice presidental candidate goes on tour with your band, i
would say it would be *very* relavent to the music, the culture of the list
probably will be a bit more political.

some of us dont ever stop and think what is political, what isnt - to some -
everything is political, especially if you are in a marginalized minority,
politically and socially active, very aware (to the point where i have had
conversations with both al gore and ralph nader about issues, personally)

i wont go into the nader/gore thing - just remember that if you live in a
swing state - you really dont want to bring bush into office.

and

if you live in maine - vote no on 1 - lives depend on it (stop legalized
doctor assisted suicide)- yes on five (giving people with mental illness and
guardians the right to vote) and yes on 6 (gay/lesbian rights bill)

hey coloradans!!  i know there are a few of you here...  i wanted to let you
now that my friend jenna's amazing band, sarina simoom, finally has their
first cd out and is having a cd release party in a few weeks at the bluebird
in denver.  i am not sure if i will be able to manage a road trip down from
montana, but i might.  anyway, you should check them out!  if you are not
nearby, you can order the cd by writing to theczars@aol.com or on amazon.com
after about 11/15.  cds are $10 + $2 p+h.

here is the details for the album release party:

sarina simoom's album release party for thread bone bare
thursday, november 9th, with the janet feder trio opening
bluebird theater, colfax st, denver co
21+, $5, 8:00 pm.
finally the long-awaited album is done!

other shows:

friday, november 17th, at stella's coffee house, south pearl st., denver
free

wednesday, november 22nd, opening for cat power at the bluebird theater,
denver, $10, 8:00 pm.  {acoustic show}

here is some more info from their web site.  or go to
http://www.velveteenrecords.com/html/body_sarina_simoom.html
for more complete info and a picture of them.

sarina simoom features the multi-talented jenna herbst on violin, electric
and acoustic guitar and lead vocals. sarina simoom was started by
frontperson, violinist, and guitarist jenna in washington d.c. in 1995.
they developed a devout following in the nyc/phily/d.c. area after playing
shows at prestigious clubs like the black cat and 930 club.  after
relocating to denver with lead guitarist and backup vocalist brian
balestrieri in 1998, they were joined by todd bills on drums and chris
pearson on bass guitar in 1999.

best described as a cross between the minor key acoustic driven music of
swell and the vocals of kate bush and nina simone.  add a splash of cat
power and dirty three , with eclectic rhythmic influences, and you have
sarina simoom.

"bassist chris pearson was in some mighty fine musical company --
specifically, todd bills on drums and east coast implants brian balestrieri
(guitar) and jenna herbst (violin, guitar and vocals). most of pearson's
efforts lean toward the atmospheric -- from the roving soundtrack landscapes
of velveteen monster to the often creepy crawl of jux county -- a fact that
means he's right at home within the lush auditory environs simoom so
gracefully pokes and prods. a onetime violinist for twilight motel, herbst
is simply a luminous talent -- a concise player whose elastic vocal style
recalls kate bush, a more melodic kristin hersh and the elusive sirens of
all those greek myths. "

hi folks,

the argument could (and has) been made that since the indigo girls
promote political involvement, this list should take this to heart and
discuss the current political scene.

however, many requests have been made publically (and privately to me)
to take the current political discussion to other forums.

so, please, if you wish to discuss politics address your posts to the
following forums and not to this ig list

there's a brief mention of the girls in the new issue of spin (december), in
"drowning in genius," an article by eric weisbard on greatest hits albums
(p. 216).

"single discs remain the perfect way to come to terms with groups whose
albums have always left you cold. this year, i'm making up with a couple of
rocking folkies ... [section on soul asylum deleted] ... as for the indigo
girls, well, any alt-rocker will prefer amy ray's songs to emily saliers',
but saliers' "closer to fine" remains their anthem, and the remnants of
divinity school, plus gradually acknowledged lesbianism, make for powerful
emotions throughout. let's say we call them the communitarian r.e.m.?"

kind of a backhanded compliment, if you ask me.

i just realized earlier this week that there are, in fact, two seperate
sites being maintained for ig.  there is www.indigogirls.com (which also
contains www.indigogirlsdirect.com), and there is
www.indigogirlsonline.com , which is the epic site.

they're different, and both worth knowing about.

that's probably where your confusion is coming from, sheryl.  i hope
this helps!

hey.

go to www.indigogirlsdirect.com

go to music/videos.

buy yourself a singed copy of the 'crazy game' 7" for $20.

do not pass go. do not collect $200.

wonder at the value of a non-signed copy on ebay right now.

dar recently said in an interview something to the effect that it's obvious
to anyone that "i'm straight.. make that bisexual..." and that she's been
dating men for the last 10 years (which implies that she's previously dated
women). there's been much discussion on the darlist about this and so far
this is the only known article where she discusses it.. check gail's page for
all dar stuff - www.darwilliams.net

as for boots - she has definitely sung with them more than once.. on my
newport 98 tape she does "the weight" and ctf with the girls and catie
curtis, michelle malone and rose polenzani..

i love charlie rose. he's on pbs (check your local listings, etc., etc.) and is one of the best interviewers around. he gets very interested in his guests and asks them very intelligent questions, letting them actually respond in full.

i really encourage everyone to catch this interview, as it ought to be one of the more insightful ones around.

greetings to all,

i hate to ask directly to this list since there is the igbooters list,
but i was unsuccessful there. i am in search of some tracy chapman
boots(live or rarities). does anyone have any that they are willing to
trade? if so please email me privately.

since i have wasted some bandwidth with this grovel, i offer to do a b+p
(on cd) of an ig boot from my catalog for 5 people to be chosen at
random to make it more fair. so if you want to be in the running please
email me not the list with "i want my ig b+p" in the subject line. i
will contact those that win tommorrow. i have done several b+p lately
through this group, and other lists and i have found that a lot of
people get determined to be the winner and say that they are going to
send out blanks, but never do. be considerate of the other folks on this
list. if you don't think that you will ever get around to sending the
blanks out, don't email me. you take away from the other folks which
really would like to get the tunes.

finally, i don't think that jen gets enough credit for hosting this
list, so i give a huge round of applause to her for doing so. thanks
jen.

take care - all - todd

--from the www.nadertrader.org website:

as the election quickly approaches and the presidential race appears
to be going down to the wire, many of us are wrestling with how to
use our vote. should we vote for al gore, who often strikes us as the
lesser of two evils, or for ralph nader, the green party candidate?

in a way, you can do both. become a nader trader! all indications are
that the election will be decided in a handful of swing states, where
a few thousand votes might make a huge difference in the electoral
process. votes for nader in these states run a very real risk of
putting george w. bush in the white house. while sincere, committed
people can disagree on voting for gore or nader, few want the
responsibility of personally ushering in four or eight years of
bush's regressive fiscal, environmental, and social agenda. at the
same time, voters are torn by the fact that although nader will not
win any states outright, if the green party gets more than 5% of the
national vote, it will qualify for federal election funds in the 2004
election.

what's a nader trader?

a nader trader is someone who is leaning toward ralph nader in a
swing state, but informally agrees to "trade" his or her vote with a
gore-voting friend in a state that's strongly expected to go for
bush. in other words, you vote for gore in your swing state, while
your friend casts a vote for nader without doing damage to the
gore/lieberman ticket. it's an easy way to tip the electoral balance
away from bush while preserving the national totals for the green
party. if enough people "trade" their votes, there is a very real
chance that the green party's power will be increased and that george
w. bush and his cronies will be kept out of the white house.

if you're a gore supporter in a state that's strongly expected to go
for bush, phone or email a friend in a swing state who you think
might be leaning toward nader. if you're a nader supporter in a swing
state, contact a friend in a secure state for bush. even if you don't
fit these categories, you can still play a crucial part by passing on
this idea through forwarding this via email, telling as many friends
as possible so that everyone hears about it by election day.
encourage friends who may receive a partial email to visit
http://www.nadertrader.org for more information.

where are the swing states?

the state-by-state information at www.abcnews.com has been keeping a
running assessment of what states are considered tossups, and they
now include information about how strongly each state is leaning
toward one candidate. don't just guess about the status of yours--
visit the site or read on.

at the time of this writing (friday, 10/27/00), there are over 100
electoral votes among tossup states.

tossup states:
    washington
    oregon
    minnesota
    wisconsin
    michigan
    ohio
    pennsylvania
    florida
    missouri
    arkansas
    new mexico
    new hampshire

many voters in these tossup states would like to cast a vote for
nader, but are unwilling to put bush in the white house. are you one
of them? if so, contact friends and family about moving your nader
vote out of your swing states. bring a gore vote from a bush-secure
state into your swing state. move your nader vote to a bush state.

where are the bush-secure states?

even the quickest look at the electoral map will make you realize
that there are a lot of states that are secure for bush. there are
millions of gore voters in these states who would love to cast a
meaningful vote in this election. they're currently stuck in a state
that will go for bush. these gore voters in bush-secure states should
contact friends and family about bringing a vote for nader into their
state while informally "trading" their gore vote into a swing state.

bush-secure states include:
    texas
    mississippi
    alabama
    georgia
    south carolina
    north carolina
    virginia
    montana
    idaho
    wyoming
    north and south dakota

isn't california secure for gore?

nader traders should realize that california is not a secure state
for gore. this cannot be overemphasized.

recent polls have shown a once-strong california lead for gore has
eroded, leaving california as merely leaning toward gore with
significant support for nader. many california voters have seen
recent articles in the la times and other papers about the threat of
nader to gore's chances in california. gore voters in california
should not switch their votes to nader under any circumstances.

california voters interested in nader should contact friends and
family in bush-safe states. move those nader votes down to texas
where they won't hurt anybody!

how might this help nader's candidacy?

the benefits of the nader trader idea for the gore/lieberman campaign
are obvious. but the idea will also almost certainly help nader and
the green party as well. potential nader supporters who had been
reluctant (but willing) to vote for gore can now be encouraged to
find partners in other states, actually raising nader's national vote
total! thus, it's in the best interest of all nader and gore
supporters to work together to spread the word about nader trader.

is ralph nader on the ballot in all 50 states?

no, and nadertraders should take this into account when arranging
trades with friends and family. the map on nader's official site
currently shows that north carolina, oklahoma, and south dakota are
the three states where nader is neither on the ballot nor will be
counted as a write-in. write-ins for nader will be allowed in
georgia, indiana, wyoming, and idaho. ralph is on the ballot in the
remaining states.

whose idea is this?

the idea for nader trader came up during a discussion of these issues
between gore-leaning and nader-leaning friends over dinner. it's not
endorsed or funded by any candidate or party, nor has it
been "cleared" with any party beforehand. it's just a simple,
effective way to allow you to send a message and to elect the better
of the two major candidates. and you can bet that if this idea is
widely distributed, a large-scale geographic movement of nader votes
out of swing states will make george w. bush and the republican party
very nervous.

is it legal?

a spokesperson at the u.s. justice department, which investigates
potential instances of voter fraud, said it is, since the
sites "serve as a clearing house. there is no pecuniary exchange, and
it is an agreement amongst private parties, no legal violation there
in terms of violation fraud. it definitely is an innovative campaign
technique, to say the least." (excerpted from the msnbc article
reachable through our media page.)

there's no way for authorities to know how or why individuals cast a
secret ballot. the agreement with your friend is informal, based on
your personal relationship, and is not a legal contract. since you're
contacting a personal friend about being a nader trader, you can be
sure your faith isn't wasted. you'll feel good about keeping bush out
of the white house, and you'll feel good about voting for progressive
politics, too.

how should i pass the word?

since there will be no advertising of this idea, internet
distribution and word of mouth are the only ways that people will
hear about nader trader. we encourage you to send your friends in all
states an email message about the nader trader idea-- copy this text
into the body of the mail message and send it on! or just create your
own email message directing friends to http://www.nadertrader.org.
consider printing out the web page information and showing it to
someone with a nader yard sign in your own neighborhood. since time
is short, do these things soon.

a vote for nader on november 7 does not have to put george w. bush in
the white house. if you live in a heavily contested swing state and
would like to see nader and the green party have a stronger voice,
you have a real choice. if you don't want to see george w. bush
controlling environmental policy, the supreme court, reproductive
rights, civil rights laws, and the budget surplus, contact a friend
in a bush state and be a nader trader!

it should be noted that one of the nader trader sites in california was shut
down because it is against state law to broker votes so if you participate
in something like this, you might want to make sure your aren't breaking any
laws.

hkf-- first of all, i aplogize to all the list members who got to meet after
the benefit. sarah and i would have loved to have met all of y'all but.....we
were hanging out with amy and emily!!! it was my birthday and we got all
acess passes...along with guitar picks, autographs, and pictures. there
weren't no fans backstage after the show so we got to spend a little one on
one time with the girls. they were in great spirits but very tired...which is
totally understandable. there was a couple there with several little
children....so we hung back and watched amy with the kids-- she'd make a
great mom someday. we also got to meet leslie, em's gf, who is very beautiful
and sweet. it was a nice time...we thanked them for all they've done a
quietly exited. put an end to a fabulous birthday-- sarah and i are still on
an indigo high! sorry it has taken me sevral days to post...but we have been
worn out with such an eventful weekend. thanks for reading-- ya'll have a
good night! take care-- ashley

sorry to post again, but i just wanted to say that if you e-mail me to get
info about gloria's comments, please don't e-mail me back rebutting what
she said. i really don't want to get into a political debate, just wanted
to share.
thanks,
