i think someone on this list asked for info on fibromyaligia...if not i apologize
for posting this.
from yahoo health's "ask the doctor" - dr. dean edell
http://health.yahoo.com/health/expert/drdean/answer.html
q: shirley: is there a test for fibromyalgia? the doctor thinks that's what
i have. the only thing he says he can do is give me sleeping pills so i can
rest at night.
a: dr. dean: the symptoms of fibromyalgia are fairly vague; fatigue, anxiety,
and aches and pains. some doctors believe that, along with chronic fatigue syndrome
and gulf war syndrome, fibromyalgia is not caused by a physical illness but
by the mind.
some doctors consider a patient to have fibromyalgia if pressure on 11 of 18
"tender points" on the back and neck causes pain.
in just the past two weeks, two separate studies on the condition reported some
interesting findings. one found that women who were sexually abused as children
are more likely to have fibromyalgia, which supports the idea that it is psychosomatic.
another researcher reported that the nerves of people with fibromyalgia "remember"
pain and discomfort more than other people's do. in other words, if i poke myself
in the ribs..."ow, that hurts" and the pain goes away. in a fibromyalgia patient,
a poke is felt over a widespread area and the pain lasts longer.
either way, it's a diagnosis of exclusion. if you don't have this and you don't
have that, if everything else has been ruled out, doctors will often diagnose
the patient with fibromyalgia.
and then what? you are left with this strange, new disease for which we know
neither cause nor cure. i don't know if we do people any favors by labeling
them with a disease that we're not sure even exists.
dean edell, m.d.

thomas,
wihtout a doubt man. you'll be pretty hard pressed to find anyone who
disagrees with you here but man do you got a point.
it's kind of simple and ugly at the same time, most people are sheep and
follow what they are told to follow. ig fans see it diffrently. we're
-"...not content to bow and bend to the whims of culture that swoop like
vultures..."
it's standard 5 boy pop band and 3 chord 3min 15sec songs about "baby, baby i
love you so, oh,oh,oh"
listening to the girls requries a responsibilty. you are faced with tons of
questions about life, death, other people and ofcourse yourself in their
music, and the way i see it, most are just too afraid to take on the
responsibilty.
it's just easier to be told by the record companies "this is a hit! go buy
it. we wrote them a bunch of songs, easy to remember, easy to sing, and you
don't have to answer any questions. besides every-one-else is buying it, you
don't want to be left out do you?"
in a way, i'm glad indigo girls are ours. shows like the college fund raiser
last week couldn't have happened if they had 4 multi-plantiumn albums. their
music is intimate, so are their shows and i like it that way.
but i agree with you big time thomas. we are on a planet comprised mostly of
musicly ignorant sheep and one hit wonders. thank god for amy and emily

these are unfinished thoughts, but they'll do for now :o)
<<sorry for the rant, but i'm just so frustrated at the number of people
lately who tell me they have never heard of indigo girls!>>
more so abroad. really, the indigo girls haven't made it at all outside the
us and canada, and that fact alone will mean they are never truly one of the
greats. you can put it down to a number of things, but they have built their
following through an awful lot of touring and sympathetic (college) radio
play. both of which have only been token overseas.
<<anyone else see the vh1 top 100 rock artists? what a joke!>>
for ease of reference:
vh-1's top 100 artists:
http://www.vh1.com/insidevh1/shows/100greatestlist/100artists.jhtml
<<who got in the top 5 most talented?>>
vh-1's top women in rock:
http://www.vh1.com/insidevh1/shows/100greatestlist/100women.jhtml
1. aretha franklin
2. tina turner
3. janis joplin
4. bonnie raitt
5. joni mitchell
and you can't really argue with that.
it's not "most talented" it's not "most consistent" it's not "best" it's
"greatest" (whatever that means). and really, that's supposed to reflect who
has embedded themselves in the public conciousness and who has had the most
influence on other (famous) musicians. and naturally, those criteria favour
people who have been around awhile. (not to mention it's supposed to be a
contentious list for maximum discussion/publicity value).
by my quick guestimate, the indigo girls have performed at least one song by
22 (give or take) of the people on the vh-1 top 100 artists. that's a pretty
good percentage. and for women in rock, the igs have played with (or
performed songs by) around 14 artists on the list.
i could sing you a song by most of the 200 people listed. go on, try me :o)
<<this is true, but i was just happy they were on vh1's 100 top women in
rock....weren't the indigo girls like #79? of course i didn't agree with

i might argue with a couple of places or artists here and there on the lists
(and it might also be worth noting they're us-biased lists). but in the
grand scheme of things i think the igs did pretty well. name me one person
who is above indigo girls that doesn't deserve to be and i'll give you a
good reason why they should.

to be fair, popular music was pretty male-dominated for a long
time.
here's where women fall in the list:
21. aretha franklin
32. joni mitchell
41. janis joplin
69. pretenders
80. tina turner
85. carole king
86. madonna

i make it twelve bands that have a female who either sang lead vocals and/or
made songwriting contributions.
but what is it about the list that's such a crock?
is it
- there are some female artists that should be in there over males?
- the general public prefers male artist?
- there are just proportionately more male rockers and the law of averages
takes over?
- more males are music buyers (or were on the panel or get better tv
ratings)?
or some combination?
is it really saying that males are 'better' than females?
it seems there were different criteria in defining 'rock' used in the two
lists (no billie holiday nor ella fitzgerald in the top 100) which might
explain why bonnie raitt is the #4 female but doesn't make the top 100
all-timers, while lower placed females do.
in other words, don't sweat it too much. but hey, take a look at the lists.
most artists should have a place in your cd collection :o)

well, i guess my frustration with such lists (although the afi top 100
films list is pretty good at avoiding this), is that they generally give
popularity more weight than artistic measure. that is, the untalented
and uninfluential who are commercially successful receive less attention
than the more challenging artists who are actually stretching the genre.
granted, i find a lot of the "groundbreaking" stuff nearly
unlistenable. (which lou reed album was it that was basically 2 record
sides of nothing but feedback?) but there is a middle ground, those
geniuses who walk the fine line between pushing the envelope and
resonating with their audience, and to me, these are the true top of
their genre.
exactly who these artists are is open to debate, but i'd definately
include david bowie. oddly enough, he's the only one who springs to
mind without having to get up and look at my cds.
so, that's my main gripe with such lists. they seem to miss the point
of what being a "great artist" means, and confuse it with commercial
success. if that were the true measure of success, then we should be
studying mcdonalds advertising campaigns as high art.

i think i'm annoyed by the fact that i don't really enjoy about two thirds
of the artists who were on vh1's greatest artists, and that more women
really deserved to be there. the message that they are sending with that
list is that female performers just aren't as good as males. i don't agree.

in a pop-culture world, if somebody resonates strongly with the
populace for a prolonged period of time, you *do* give that more weight
than artistic measure.
have you ever tried to write an extremely catchy pop song? it's more
difficult than you might think.

i think the list was well-constructed, and managed to take both into
account.

revolution #9? tripe, i tell you! :)

of course! but looking at the list, i see a lot of that. we may or
may not revere kiss as musicians, but they pushed the concert experience
to a level that had not been experienced before. van halen did the same
for guitar heroics, but he did it in a way that resonated strongly with
the populace. (c'mon, admit it, "hot for teacher" ***is*** catchy.)
we may or may not agree with what the artist stood for -- but all the
people on the list had a pretty strong impact.
another thing to look at is how your peers view you. when i heard that
bruce springsteen and members of u2 were big fans of a young band called
marah, i checked them out. (brilliant!!!)
if you look at many of the artists on this list, you'll hear their
names being mentioned by other artists.
> exactly who these artists are is open to debate, but i'd definately

me too. and broooce, van the man, u2, rem, the beatles, and on and
on...
> so, that's my main gripe with such lists. they seem to miss the point

methinks thou dost protest too much. there's probably something you
could learn by listening to an album from everybody on this list, whether
or not the music moves you personally. the *real* value of such things is
to generate discussion, which is happening now.
good deal.

any list of this type is merely an indication of the opinions and prejudices
of its creators.....
it's really quite inspiring that 'underground' artists like the indigo girls
and ani made the list at all.....
don't let it spoil your day ;)

"what 1997 song was the first time the indigo girls used electric guitar?"
it was soy of course though the answer isn't right the year coincides....
but *we* knew that.

and then there was a question about lilith fair. i dont remember it

this was the first time that the category wasn't there just to pick on ig.
the first time i saw a mention was "how many licks does it take to get to

i haven't seen vh1 top 100 yet but i will after reading the emails i have here. i live in the philippines and i consider indigo girls as one of my top 5 greatest female artist. lately, i went to different record stores and ask if the new indigo girls album are available. i was surprised by the reactions of the sales lady, i don't know if i asked my question that they can barely hear it or they don't know what i am talking about, because they asked me to repeat my question. so i did they just ask each other and ended up telling me they don't have it yet. i really felt bad, that they don't know ig, they waste their time memorizing pop songs and artists and neglecting the fact that there are other artists who really produce quality music.
that is the culture here in the philippines, unfortunately, i have to live with it. i am happy i am in the ig mailing list, i can be updated with ig and at the same time share common thoughts of ig. i may not send more messages in the mailing lists, but i enjoy reading emails i received from the ig mailing list and with this i would like to address to you my gratitude. thanks to everybody in the list!

hi all,
power of two. everyone loves that song (and by everyone i mean a vast
majority. don't e-mail me saying you know of one person in an alabama prison
with only 3 fingers who says "it doesn't do it for me") personally i think it
is a little slow moving and a bit on the boreing side, but never-the-less an
absoultly beautiful song.
i have one problem with the lyrics, or i should say one line
"...the steel bars between me and a promice, suddenly bend with ease..."
to me, since the song is talking about her and her lover taking off on a road
trip and what they will mean to eachother and the world after there time is
up, that promice being made is one of fidelity to the lover.
so if the bars that hold the promice in place bend with ease, doesn't the
promice escape, and in turn the promice is broken.
i hear a negative conotation with that line (as great as the metaphor is) to
me is sounds like emily is singing happily about breaking a promice.
what do you hear?
hit it gang!

joe,
i'm visualizing the bars *between* her and the
promise; meaning, suddenly, she's freed to make the
promise or committment instead of holding back (her
once-caged soul, so to speak).

the narrator has a problem with commitment. but no longer with this person.
so now the barrier that is stopping her giving her heart completely is
easily removed.
the steel bars between me and a promise, suddenly bend with ease.
no?
what i have a problem with:
(and in this example, life (the universe and everything) is represented by:
42)
you can multilply life by two (42 x 2),
you can raise life by the power of two (42^2),
but you can't multiply life by the power of two (42 x ^2).
nice metaphor, but it doesn't work. now that, my friends, is being picky.

cool deal everyone,
score one for jux-of-positioning. it seens i was the only one in the cage to
start with!
each responce said pretty much the same thing "now she is free to get to the
promice"
i like that.
but...... the next line, "the closer i'm bound in love with you the closer i
am to free" doesn't that have her escaping again.
we have bending steel bars, and becoming free. are we sure she wasn't "in"
the cage?

joe,
>>so if the bars that hold the promise in place bend with ease, doesn't
the promise escape, and in turn the promice is broken.<<
i think metaphorically that emily is speaking more of the steel bars
that keep her from making a promise... ie. a commitment. before this
partner that kind of promise was too hard for her to make, whatever
mental barriers there were (bars) that kept her from making it were too
hard for her to get through. but now, presumably truly in love, she is
able to bend those bars and achieve that promise easily.
just my take.

a solution:
you should only play aerosmith songs.
if lyrics about making it with 16 year old girls cause her to
reminisce about so and so, then you probably should dump her.

lori,
i sent this to you and to the list because i would like other to play a
little devils advocate with me.
i also play the guitar and piano (piano being my forte). i used to spend a
lot of time with a friend named stacy. she had a voice that in all honesty
riveled amy's!!!
she was amazing! melissia ethridige would back off and say "whoa!!!!" at the
power pouring from this girls throat.
amyray (i'm steeling that! imatatoin is the greatest form of flatery!) stacy
and i were teaming up as a song writing team. her and i both play music and
write. she had this one song, i can't remember the title, but oh man was it
awesome. it was a powerfull sultry love song that sent chills all over my
body, and then she admited it still gave her chills. she had written it a
year or two before.
but then.... (enter soap opera plot twist music - ba-ba-bum!!) her girlfriend
came in!!! the two of them then got into a fight, that i was "oh, so lucky"
to be a part of about the fact that that song was writen for an ex-lover of
stacy's.
my philosophy is this. songs, as much as a part of expression of feelings
toward an emotion, an event or a person are also, if not first, art.
feelings change all the time. that's what makes us human, but the art, the
art stays pure, it is a snap shot of passion and no one should tell someone
else that they can't share it.
what would happen if michael angelo came to rome one day and said, "you know
what, i'm an athiest now. i want everyone to stop looking at the sisteen
chapel, i don't feel that way anymore!"
here's the thing lori, whether you play the song, or it is on the cd player,
if your girlfriend is going to have it spark a memory, then the song is doing
it's job.
what about what the song means to you! are you willing to give up your
emotions?
she is with you, and should count for something (and if it don't great, now
you know, and you can make a dection to move on).
play the song, don't worry about what she is thinking, maybe, you can
re-associate the imagery for her. maybe the song can remind her of you.
don't let someone, anyone, censor art. play the song
the abundlently sad point of the story. stacy stoped playing the song.
so, now the world will have to go with out it. and that is an injustice to
stacy, her would be audiance and the god who gave her the gift and abilities
to create such a beautiful peice of art.

by saying "the closer i'm bound in love to you the closer i am to free" emily
means that if you really love someone, the promise of staying with them for
better or worse isn't holding you back or caging you in any way but getting
to spend a lifetime with them is the ultimate freedom.

okay so, i wrote and performed in this play that had a lot to do with an
ex-of mine. when it was performed, my current girlfriend of course saw it,
but since she's basically the coolest person on earth, she totally
understood that it wasn't about the ex but about the art.
however if someone expressly asks that a song not be played around them
because it upsets them, or if one does not want to encourage the person one
is in a relationship with to think about an ex, than one should certainly
not sing the song in front of her. that's what i think anyway. and i'm
teling all of you this because i want the semester to be over and i don't
want to study for any exams anymore.

for what it's worth, i'm going to openly disagree with the strosenblum post.
not playing a song becuase someone askes you not to is hitting that slipery
slope and teetering on co-dependency.
the jester is one of "i love you and will do what i can to make you happy"
but it's short sighted in that shouldn't the partner say "i love you, and
know that you are singing a song, not professing feelings to someone else"
joe

by the way, good deal to hear from a fellow playwrite. i disagree with your

sometimes songs have painful associations to people and it's nice to
respect that and not cause the person you're dating pain. however, if she
keeps saying, about different songs, "i can't hear this now, it just hurts
too much, reminds me of my ex, was our song," etc, then i'd be worried
about her pulling strings.
but if it's just one, or maybe two...don't play it. but be aware. i mean,
jeez, we shouldn't be too paranoid about the people we love.

<<the steel bars between me and a promice, suddenly bend with ease.>>
hmmm. i don't hear too many negative connotations there, maybe emily's
not talking about her partner when she says,"promise."
to me the steel bars, are not something that holds the committment
together, but something that was blocking the connection between them,
and so the bars bending in that sense is a good thing, made it easier to
make the committment. it was a kodac moment, ya know?

it all depends on whether you interperet 'used' to mean 'played themselves'
or not.
and if it's the latter, whether they both have to play for it to count.
basically, and so as to end all discussions, all that matters is that it was
a lame question, especially for indigo geeks like us. 1997 indeed...

although i think that what is happening is that life is being multiplied by

the category was actually:
the indigo girl's female fans were upset to hear that they were plugged.
"plugged" being the operative word. it wasn't necessarily a flattering
remark.
as for the question... it was all in the phrasing. they asked which ig song
released in 1997 was their first to "feature" the electric guitar.
i'm sure we could debate that for years :)
peace!

i remember some years ago i used to watch the sifl and ollie show on mtv it
was the only thing i would watch on evil corporate mtv it was holarious and
very organic (despite the fact that it was on mtv) i don't know if any of you
were able to watch it and i'm not sure if it is still on air (i had my cable
turned off do to my own corporate boycott) but it was two guys that just did
a simple puppet show with socks and their dialoge, songs and imagination were
awesome....anyways to get to my point, and i do have one, there was this
recurring character in there called "precious roy" and he was kinda strange
and yelled out things that made no sense to what was going on, but me and my
friend were sitting there and all of a sudden he said "my name is precious
roy and i like the indigo girls"did anyone else see that??? now i don't know
if that was a stab or anything but we couldn't believe it here this is one of
our fav shows and they mentioned our fav musicians!!! sweet!!! 'wether it was
a jab at them or not it was so kewl!!! anyways just thought i would tell you
this long and pseudo piontless story lol!!! take care y'all!!!!

i think what the question was getting at is that touch me fall is the first
song where amy and emily are both playing only electric guitars. think about
it, even this new loud amy stuff still has acoustic in it. okay, the end.

at the tower records i went to, all the reissues they had available were in
the digipak. as a result, i have the "rites of passage" remaster, as well
as "retrospective," in the digipak case.
so yeah, i think it's safe to say that they exist . . . ;)

hey all,
i know i will probably get flamed. ok, so be it.
but i wanted to let you guys (especially those of you on aol) know what
happened to me tonight.
while i was online getting caught up on some e-mail, a stranger im'd me.
this happens often. (usually people iming me and most other women are men
looking for sex...) i like to test the waters first, find out what someone
is all about before completely ignoring them. anyway, so this person (sorry,
i am not giving the screen name...) started chatting with me. she introduced
herself as amy. great, it is a common name, heaps of amy's out there. then
she asked me where i was from (after telling me that she is from ga but is
always on the road), and when i mentioned that i grew up in chicago, she said
that she remembers chicago because she had surgery there. things started
getting fishy. she was telling me that she was a religion major and that it
was a rocky ride learning to express herself, but that she can do it now
through music. she went on and on, drawing every parallel to amy ray (even
using "ya'll").
i wanted to say something, but for some reason i didn't. finally, she told
me to go to bed and listen to her music and look at her website. that is
when i commented that i knew what she was up to and that i am not dumb enough
to fall for it. she made some comment about having "nothing to hide" and i
signed off.
now, i am not stupid. i know that amy ray would not be randomly iming fans
on aol at 1am her time. man, i would be quite surprised if amy ray even had
aol in the first place (ya know, supporting smaller companies, etc).
a few things majorly bother me about this incident. first and foremost,
isn't it totally illegal to pretend to be someone that you are not?
especially someone famous? secondly, (and mainly) what if i had been some
younger, new fan of the indigo girls and had fallen for this thinking that
amy ray was really actually talking to me? i am sure that one day i would
have found out that it was not true, and i would have been devistated. the
reason i bring this up is because one of my friends studet taught (middle
school) last semester. she had a student come into class one day all excited
because the student had been on aol the night before and had talked to one of
the backstreet boys (or one of those boy bands. i really get them all
confused). needless to say, the thing was a hoax. the student found out (i
think her mother e-mailed the band's management to report this) and was
devistated. incidents like the one i had this evening can really disappoint
a child. i think that is why i am so bothered. luckily for me, i am 23, and
a long time fan of the indigo girls. i am not naive or stupid. i knew that
this was a hoax (it has actually happened to me before, but not with the
indigo girls, with another famous person i admire). i just waited a while to
say anything. maybe i should have said something sooner. who knows.
anyway, i just wanted to point this out to you all. i am sure there really
isn't anything i can do about it, but venting does help :-) also, if anyone
on aol has had a similar experience, please e-mail me (privately). i am
interested in seeing if the same person is doing this often.
sorry to clog up the list, but i think this needed to be posted.
good night.
:-) karen
ps- and if by some chance this person happens to be on the list, i would
highly suggest that you stop fuc*ing with people (or trying to). it's not
cool at all.

i think everyone should realize that the internet is like a fantasy world.
people should not take anything at face value here, especially unsolicited
information. i can't imagine what people get out of doing things like this,
it just wastes everyones time and energy.
personally, i never open email or respond to instant messages unless i know

*i agree 100%. i think that sometimes people take things said online too
seriously. the reason i pointed this out is because i do not want anyone
(especially a younger ig fan) to get hurt by this. :-)

that is a good idea. but personally, sometimes random meaningless online
chat with strangers can be hilarious. (very entertaining).

hi,
first, karen, thanks for warning us about that person online. it is scary
that someone would prey on someone like that, or, if prey is too strong a
word, then play with someone's head like that. good for you not to fall for
it.
i generally agree that you have to be careful with people online, because
it is a lot of fantasy world out there, but i also (knock wood) have had some
great times with people i've met online...through email mostly, not an im out
of the blue, though. although there is one person i know who hailed me one
friday night in late august after something i wrote on the sonia/disappear
fear list that day. well, two hours of a great conversation later, i think
we've struck up a friendship, keep in touch regularly (as in several times a
week) and i look forward to the day we actually meet. for my mind, i think it
is a bit karmic, in that if you are yourself in the cyberworld, you attract
like-minded people back to you. (for the karmic-ly impaired, the biblical
version is, you reap what you sow.)
and about this particular person, since i'm dying to tell someone this!!!
we were chatting last night and i mentioned to her that my annual
gynecological exam is monday and she asked whether such a thing is necessary
for lesbians. and i told her -- and am telling y'all here!! -- it is
absolutely necessary. it is part of taking good care of yourself. the exam
also is valuable in detecting cancer via the pap smear and breast exam, when
you are not checking yourself....but of course, i know everyone here already
does self-exam. so, i did my part to help my friend understand the need to
see a gynecologist yearly, even if a lesbian, and perhaps ensure that she
will be around to be friends for a very long time.
take care,
deb

hey!
ok, i wanted to make a few comments on my post about the amy ray impersonator
on aol. a few issues have been raised to me (both via list mail and private
mail).
first of all, i do know why this person decided to "play" with me. my screen
name *is* "indigokare," and my profile does have references to the indigo
girls. as i said, it has happened once before (though not with the indigo
girls, with another famous person who was referred to in my old profile).
knowing from the get go that this was a hoax, i was not fooled by this for a
moment. i am really not that stupid. i am also not going to change my
screen name or profile. i have every right to openly say that i like the
indigo girls without having to deal with freaks who mistake me for an idiot.
:-)
secondly, a lot of people have e-mailed me that this (or similar incidents)
have happened to them. i sent these people the screen name of the idividual
to try to figure out if this is a pattern of this person. if it is, i am
going to report it to aol and possibly see if there is a way to report it to
ig management or epic. the reason that i did not report this to aol last
night was because they wouldn't have done anything. there was nothing in the
"conversation" that was vulgur or sexually harassing. this would have been
too hard for aol to investigate. and since aol doesn't really do much about
people who *really* violate their terms of service, i am sure nothing would
have been done.
just a few thoughts. i want to thank everyone who responded (either through
the list or private mail). and again, if you have had a similar experience,
please let me know!
:-) karen

if i get some more time after the holidays are through i will post again and
take a new set of requests. for now, though, unless i've already responded to

okay, but wait a minute. it's been a really long time, here, but what if
life were, say, (x^2-5)? then you have, do you not,:
multiply life by two 2(x^2-5)
or multiply life by power of two (x^2-5)^2
which would give you x^4-10x^2+25, right?

nice try, chris.
as a math teacher, i can tell you that your math is right, but you're still
either raising life to the power of two or multiplying life by itself.
neil's point, while pedantic and silly (exactly his aim, i think) still
stands. you can't multiply anything by the power of two. you can, however,
multiply it by _a_ power of two, i.e. 7x8= 7x 2^3
hope that helps

is my email broken??? why is the list so quiet today???
haha i'm kidding... i know you all hate those posts.
no, really, i am on a girls listening spree this afternoon and noticed some
stuff in 2 songs that i hadn't before...
1. the way emily says "honey" in leaving (ie honey all i wanna do is go)
reminds me of the way honey is said in that grease song: "you're the one that
i want, ooh ooh ooh honey"
2. remember the 80s song "gloria" sung by laura branigan made popular by
flashdance [admit it... you know you've all seen it and loved it]... anyway,
some of the chords from "we are together" sound just like a slowed down
version of gloria to me
ok, so maybe "honey" is a stretch but i really hear gloria in we are
together!! has someone else mentioned this before? have i been smoking too
much crack or does anyone else know what i'm talking about? :)

i guess we'll have to petition amy and emily to sing "multiply life by a
factor of two" from now on. or how about "adding up the total of a love
that's true... raise the value of life to the second power." ?

hey all,
as i was driving home i heard "leaving" on the radio. it was the first time
i heard the studio version (though i have the song memorized thanks to my
boot collection and being at the berkeley show). it is beautiful. one of
the radio stations (i never listen to the radio. only when i am changing
tapes or md's) is really plugging radiobox because they are sponsoring the
chicago hte show. the dj said that the album cover has the cutest picture of
amy and emily when they were younger. i have seen the cover, but not close
up. anyway...

hi folks,
a friendly reminder...
please make sure all posts are in plain text! there are a great many
listees with mail programs which do not take kindly to anything by plain
text.
please check and/or change your settings before posting to the list.
thank you.

sure you can. "2" could refer to 2 people, and if neither one of them was
able to multiply, perhaps together "by the power of two" they could multiply
life.

ok ok ok. i've gotten lots of flames in response to my post, so lemme clarify
real quick. first, my previous email to the list had html text for no
apparent reason. i have no idea why because i certainly did not do anything
out of the common way when sending it. i didn't mean to! *ducks punches*
second, i'm getting flames for sending a "why is the list so quiet" email. i
was teasin with the quiet list thing and had you scrolled down a line or two,
you would have seen that the email did in fact have igc.
sorry...
not that it was earth shattering or anything, but i'll repost sans html
(hopefully) and sans quiet list inquiry.
no, really, i am on a girls listening spree this afternoon and noticed some
stuff in 2 songs that i hadn't before...
1. the way emily says "honey" in leaving (ie honey all i wanna do is go)
reminds me of the way honey is said in that grease song: "you're the one that
i want, ooh ooh ooh honey"
2. remember the 80s song "gloria" sung by laura branigan made popular by
flashdance [admit it... you know you've all seen it and loved it]... anyway,
some of the chords from "we are together" sound just like a slowed down
version of gloria to me
ok, so maybe "honey" is a stretch but i really hear gloria in we are
together!! has someone else mentioned this before? have i been smoking too
much crack or does anyone else know what i'm talking about? :)

i received the following information from another e-mail list experiencing
similar problems with html. perhaps this was also a factor when the
list was down recently when sherlyn came to the rescue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i just want to alert all subscribers on this list about a problem with the
new aol 6.0 and problems it causes with mailing lists.
please note: this is not a concern if you use aol 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0. this is
only if you have aol 6.0 or plan to upgrade to 6.0.
to make a long story short, the new aol 6.0 sends all email with "html
formatting" and does not have an option to send just plain text.
what happens then is all email sent from an aol 6.0 account to a
mailing list is bounced (rejected) by the listserve software and is then
forwarded onto the list owner for fixing/approval. the list owner then
gets the post and has to do some magic and then send the post on.
this of course will result in a delay for your post in reaching the list.
so, if you now have aol 6.0 and send a post and are perplexed as to why it
did not show up yet or showed up hours later, you now know why.
this is causing problems on other list serves across the planet, and aol
has been made aware of the problem. aol has promised a fix.
in the mean time, the owners are working on a solution with some software
they can install that would automatically fix the offending aol email and
send it on without it bouncing.
apparently, if you've upgraded to aol 6.0 their default mail sender thingie
(that's the technical term) sends all their messages in the mime format so
some mailing lists have been having problems accepting mail from 6.0 users.
sorry, don't know any solutions.
hey y'all,
it's been awhile since i have posted. i am at emory
gotten to meet don saliers (emily saliers dad) and it
is easy to see where she gets talent and spiritual
understanding from--have any of you identified with
that side of the ig?
but the real question i have to ask y'all (and you can
reply privately or to the list) is how do you respond
to an ex who tells you later on that their sexual
orientation has changed? i just recently had one of
those revealing emails sent to me and i am struggling
with it.
thanks y'all
hello!
i have a question. i just downloaded "life's so strange" by emily s. from napster and went to lifeblood to view the lyrics and i came across the line that says "there are moments when amelia's right beside me". who is amelia? is she a fictional character emily created or is she someone dear to emily?
i really have to ask this question, so i hope anyone would know the answer or have their own interpretation about this line.
hi there!
emily is singing about amelia earhart who attempted to fly solo around the
globe, but her plane went down somewhere over the pacific.
"...the next thing i know, i taste the salt of the sea."
doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song, but it's all very sad and
beautiful.
there's also an error in the lyrics at lifeblood.
http://www.lifeblood.net/lyrics/athruz/lifestrg.html.
instead of "there are mornings when i'm more vigorous" it should read
"there are mornings when i'm with icarus"
john - i think your question is interesting and i hope you can come to a
satisfying resolution to your struggle. i don't know whether i have useful
insight, but i have had discussions about this with friends and family.
actually - i should qualify because i'm not sure if your ex is male or
female, and perhaps that's relevent in understanding the dynamics of this
situation. i've had the discussion in reference to the feelings men have
when a female ex reveals that she is gay.
i am a straight married woman who loves the ig, so i get a certain amount
of second guessing from everywhere (it seems) about when i will be leaving
my husband to run off with a woman. my response is usually something about
how folks never seemed to wonder if i'd run off with another man when i
spent most of my time listening to/attending concerts by male bands, and
that this whole issue is not raised when i go see concerts by straight
female artists, etc...
but the discussion usually turns to one of how threatening it is for most
men to think that a girlfriend/spouse may leave them for another woman. the
discussion usually takes the same turns - the men agree on this, and the
women wonder why in the world that would be. it would seem intuitive that a
man should feel more threatened if the ex began dating another man -
someone to whom he can be directly compared.
from my anecdotal experience (probably not relevent to a studied
evaluation of this, but oh well) i think women really do see this situation
differently than men. several of my friends, my sister and i have all dated
guys who later came out to us as gay. we had the same response - "oh, no
wonder!" none of us felt especially insulted or threatened by it.
maybe someone on this list has studied this formally in a gender studies
class? i'd be interested to hear whether men and women in general perceive
this situation differently, and what the reasons might be.
is it a different situation when a same-sex partner leaves for an opposite
sex one?
in any case, john, i'm sorry i don't have useful answers, but i think this
is a good discussion to have on the list. i think there are many here who
will have good suggestions.
there's an article today in chicago tribune about female indie punk/rock
bands. amy ray was mentioned:
"meanwhile, several factors have sparked renewed urgency among the
scene's older bands. indigo girls singer amy ray, who recorded much of
her upcoming solo album with the butchies, notes women artists have been
all but dropped from the rock and alternative airwaves since the end of
the lilith fair festival in 1999."
and as previously mentioned on the list, gail ann dorsey is currently on
tour, playing bass for dar williams. (i was fortunate enough to be able to
see dar in concert last month at the henry fonda theatre in hollywood, to
which i have a certain sentimental attachment--the concert was awesome!)
she's been performing a song of hers, which i believe is called "it brings
you love," on the tour, and it's wonderful. incredible musician, incredible
voice. i'm definitely looking forward to this album.
hey...
before i forget - speaking of gail ann dorsey, do yourself a favour and
search out her first two albums... (and if you find the second one, send it
to me - i lost my copy :o( )
yes, it's that time again where many, many new and exciting bootleg cdrs are
on offer to you, the loyal igslist reader for nothing save the cost of
blanks and postage. and, although i say so myself, i've really surpassed
myself. most of these are fine, fine, must-have discs.
you can take a sneak peak at the artwork and full tracklistings here:
www.go.to/neilytones
although i need to finalize the liner notes for one of them - it should be
there in a day or two.
all will fit on one 74 minute disc, except where noted:
attack of the killer b-sides volume five
- the fifth (go fig) in this popular series which tries to compile all the
indigo girls' officially released rarities. including the 'cold beer...'
promo and an awesome ~exclusive alternate mix~ of peace tonight.
indigo originals (2 cd set)
- over forty original amy and emily compositions which never made it onto an
epic album. (sources vary from excellent quality studio to
slightly-dodgy-but-cleaned-up-as-best-i-could audience tapes) plus a couple
of fine new amy songs as bonus tracks! this is a must-have set!!!
columbia records radio hour plus!
- the indigo girls' latest promo-only cd, following in the footsteps of club
r+r and the coffee promo, together with two other excellent radio shows.
mostly taken from the cds sent to radio shows for broadcast, this is a fine
quality set. includes two songs exclusive to these broadcasts!
complete shepherd's bush, 22 november 1994 (2 cd set)
- partially released on in with the out crowd, this release surplants that
by offering the full show, half from an audience tape and half (more than
iwtoc) from soundboard sources. featuring cover art with pictures, setlist
and ticket from the actual show.
uk95 - three days in june
- the complete uk 1995 tour in best-ever quality. now you can really throw
away those copies of 'iwtoc' and 'complicated girls' because it's on these
discs sounding better and more complete. two acoustic radio sessions and the
glastonbury live concert (including backstage performances).
peabody's downunder
- a nifty radio broadcast from way back in 1989. nothing too special, and
it's not a must-have but it's sounding great.
reverse 1 / shades of indigo (1 x 80 minute cdr)
- two full-length promo-only releases on one disc. nothing new here if you
already have them, but if you don't, it's a spiffy way to own 'em.
live on the tv (1x80 minute cdr)
- two iffy 'commercial bootleg' cds on one disc - apparently taken from a
video (funnily enough), not wonderful, but acceptable sound, and interesting
performances. and it'll save you buying a copy!
stay tuned for details on how to get your very own copy - i'm just going off
now to finalize the tree...
in the "shaming of the sun" songbook the words are listed as, "i look
if you're interested in getting copies of the discs (as just posted), save
this email!!
here's what to do. work out which disc(s) you want, then contact the
appropriate branch as listed below. if they're not overloaded, they'll ask
you to provide blanks and return postage/packaging and they will copy the
discs for you free of charge. please respect them if they've reached their
copy limit, or if i screwed up and gave you the wrong information.
in return for their time, i ask that you do a few things to aid them:
- remove the cellophane from the discs you send them.
- it's easier (and cheaper) to send discs without jewel cases (but
protected).
- don't use nasty fiber-filled mailers, use bubble-wraped ones.
- consider a thank you gift. it's not necessary in order to obtain these
discs, but an extra blank or two, some chocolate, or a kind word never goes
unappreciated.
- pass on the karma: make boots for other people; let folks know they can
get quality boots for free; make a link on your website to
www.geocities.com/igreport
anyway here are the branch details. i toyed with the idea of having everyone
email me and then i'd assign everyone to the branches, but decided against
it - i hope this works. here goes:
if you just want:
- attack of the killer b-sides volume five
great idea chris!!!!
i love misunderstood lyrics. the're a lot of fun and sometimes the
misunderstanding is actuly better.
of course we have the most famous...."there's a bathroom on the right"
"blinded by the light, reved up like a douch, another roller in the night"
and one of my personal favorites, while singing a bob dylan song "the ants
are my friends and they're blowing in the wind, the ants are blowing in the
wind"
but i wanna talk ig "what did she say's".
a favorite emily mis-lyric i had is from get out the map. "....that same sun
that warms your heart will suck that guter dry".
hey if nothing else, it's true.
well my daughter (11) had a great one last night
on "get out the map"
she thought the girls were being very rude and singing
"we'll give the finger to everyone we meet on the way out of town" <vbg>
i put the closed captioning on the dvd so she could see her mistake.
hee hee... i love this thread every time it comes around. my
favorite error (of those i've heard firsthand) was my friend katie's
version of the chorus of love will come to you:
"it's as if i'd opened up a crystal bottle of brew"
puts a whole new spin on the song. "the ultimate comfort song,"
indeed...
and don't forget, if a branch is closed, then there's always me to take
there's a quick neilytone survey up at
http://members.nbci.com/neilytones/survey.html
whether you like this whole idea or not - whatever your thoughts, if you
could take five minutes to complete it, i'm sure it'd be appreciated.
also, and really, this should have been mentioned earlier, if you're
thinking of getting, or already own the b-sides discs, please, please buy
the original compilations that the tracks are from. you really should have
them already. and why not use the information at the neilytones website to
double the charitable contributions that some of those purchases made. don't
want anyone to lose out now...
and that's basically it.
