hey if we are going to continue that thread, can i request that
people include the actual correct lyrics, along with the misheard
ones?? some of us dont have every single lyric memorized, and that
makes the thread much less interesting. i mean if you site the
correct one, i will recognize it and know the context, but if you
dont, i might not get it.

thanks!!

i would say that men are traditionally raised to see competition as a natural
thing. so when it's a situation where your girlfriend/wife is dating another
man, it becomes a question of "who's the better man?", which is something a guy
would be faced with on a regular basis. when it's a question of your
girlfriend/wife dating another woman, a guy can't really win at "who's the
better _woman_?" so it comes across as "not a fair fight" and is more
threatening because there's no way to compete. plus, it questions your
masculinity if you're such a bad example of a man that she decides she doesn't
want to be with a man at all.

> from my anecdotal experience (probably not relevent to a studied
>evaluation of this, but oh well) i think women really do see this situation
>differently than men. several of my friends, my sister and i have all dated
>guys who later came out to us as gay. we had the same response - "oh, no
>wonder!" none of us felt especially insulted or threatened by it.

although i think that women are traditionally raised to compete with each
other for the attention of men, i think this has to do with something else. in
the straight mating game, women are the pursue-ees and men are the pursuers so i
think the sense of loss is different. for a man, if you lose your
girlfriend/wife, you have to go out and woo another one; for a woman, if you
lose your boyfriend/spouse, you have to choose another one from the ones who try
to woo you. (i ain't much of a salesman, so if i had a choice, i'd rather be
wooed!) you don't have to question your femininity when there's always another
guy to come hit on you.

>is it a different situation when a same-sex partner leaves for an opposite
>sex one?

the other complicating issue here is in-the-closet/out-of-the-closet. i have
a male friend who was in this situation and his depiction of things was that
when his boyfriend left him to marry a woman it wasn't that the boyfriend was bi
or no longer gay, but that the boyfriend did it in part to further his career so
he could have a wife at his side for social/business functions. my friend's
perception was that the "switch" in his boyfriend was basically a lie. it
wasn't perceived as an insult as much as a sell-out.

hey all:

i have a confession. when i first heard leads, i thought emily was singing:
"there is no christ this year, there's a conspiracy" then i thought to
myself, "why would she write a thing like that", her dad being a theology
professor and all. finally i got the right words.

i also have to admit, i thought get out the map was "suck that gutter dry"
for the longest time and i think on the tower promo, she actually says that
and laughs - that's what it sounds like anyway.

i hope everyone has a great thanksgiving.
take care

i have an editor called mp3 splitter that i've used and another called mp3
trim. both were freeware which i downloaded from http://www.cnet.com

for critical editing i use mpeg suite which changes mp3s to .wav files and
.wavs to mp3s and another called acoustica which is great for editing .wavs.
acoustica is a free download with a 30 day trial - the registration fee is
only $10. i used the last 2 programs exclusively in creating the tracks for
my 3 cds.....

hi --

a few days ago, someone posted that she'd pre-ordered two of the remasters
from tower, never gotten the 'backordered' promo cd, and just received a
message saying that the backorder was being cancelled because the item was
no longer available.

well, the same thing happened to me.

so i wrote to tower, told them i was pissed off and why, and suggested that
something was really off with their order system, as i knew many people
who'd ordered the stuff after me who received the promo cd.

i got a personal reply saying that the promo cd was on its way to me.

it never hurts to ask. something to be thankful for...

the tower stores in my area all had tons of these, and were giving them away
for the asking, regardless of whether you purchased the correct item(s) or
not. they were very disorganized, 2 employees said they didn't have them,
then the manager came out and found a big box of them behind the counter...

hey,

the tower stores in my area seemed bo be uninformed about the free cd. when
i went in to pick one up (i did it right on the release date, though...), i
just asked if i could have one. the clerk said yes, without a mention of
having to purchase anything. in fact, the free cd's were just sitting on the
counter, with a sign that said "take one! free!" (or something like that).
so maybe the problem is that they just ran out? but i would for sure
complain (if i had ordered it, which i originally did, but when i received
that daunting notice a few days after i ordered it, i just went in to pick
one up myself), especially because they are adding shipment charges to your
credit card bill if you ordered the free cd along with another cd.

hi all,

i don't post too often, but i had to put in my misunderstood lyrics. also,
these come from "leeds".
i heard:
a politician lacks what i insist he be, there is no crisis here.........

instead of:

a politician locks my eye and says to me

i think i first heard this during the whole impeachment time, so ti seemed
rather appropriate!

i have enjoyed this thread.

seriously, that's what i thought it was....guess i have to check
lifeblood.

speaking of misheard lyrics, years ago on the 'net i found a list of
indigo girls misheard lyrics, and i've never been able to locate it again.
that, and list of "wisdom i have learned from the indigo girls" which
was a list of lyrics that were particularily insightful...if anyone has a link
or copy of those lists i'd be ever so grateful. :)

hey all,

i was actually the compiler (compilist?) of the misheard lyrics about 2 or 3
years ago, but lost the list when my computer went haywire. i e-mailed it to
a bunch of people though, so there should be someone out there who's held
onto it. it included misheard lyrics alongside their correct counterparts as
well as some alternative titles and such.

anyway, if anyone's hung on to those, i'd appreciate it if you sent it my
way as well!

thanks,
shannon

i think the best thing that you can do is to report it to aol (is it still
"tosfiles"? i haven't reported anything in so long ....). if they do

okay, hoping someone can help me out here.

i just heard a version of "when you wish upon a star" on radio delilah--i
think it was sung by billy joel.

i've searched amazon and disney.com....however, it's like looking for the
proverbial needle in that ole' haystack.

anyone know where i can find this? i've e-mailed radio delilah, but, i'm not
holding my breath, as i know how these things go.

thank you, thank you, thank you!

and, happy bird day to everyone!

i saw dar last night... and she told us that she was taping the show in

be perfect etc... it was a great show... dar's wonderful... i just thought
i'd let you know that the live album thing isn't just a rumor.

delilah is a syndicated radio show typically shown on "soft rock" type =
stations. we get it here in western mass on 96.1 out of worcester, and i =
think its on 92.9 out of burlington vt. i know its on in a lot of places =
but thats where i've lived and heard it so far....

delilah's website is www.radiodelilah.com

her voice is rather soothing, she takes calls from people who want to =
talk about the people they love, or the people they want to dedicate a =
song to for some reason. its a quiet type format - the cops i used to =
work with would turn into puddles of gelatenous material with her voice.

anyway.

thats who delilah is.

i was at my sisters room last night to hear melissa ferrick (a lesbian bar
here in atlanta) and they had copies of the tower cd just sitting in a
basket by the door for anyone to take. so if you are having trouble getting
ahold of one i suggest you try your local gay-friendly bar or something like
that...they are still floating around.

peace everyone,

i think she was on aol years ago - like 93 or 94, before aol even had
internet email capability. there were rumors flying.

after suff tour, there was a post to the list apologizing about jane
silberry's behavior at a show - this person did not claim to be either of
them, but i shot off a quick email, and the person did respond with some not
public at the time news so it had to be at least someone close to them, if
not amy or emily..

besides, just because you are rich and famous doesnt bean you dont use aol,
i can tell you suzanne vega, michael stipe (he answered an im years ago - my
brush with greatness) bruce hornsby and ann wilson from heart all used aol
at one point or another. not to mention authors, researchers in various
fields, pro athletes ect.

besides, i wrote to the author who ii based my thesis writings on - he wrote
back and we are actually good friends to this day...

happy thanksgiving-

just to clarify... aol has always had internet email capability. i've been
using it since the early 90s when they started out. iming within aol-only
started in the mid-90s, then went internet by about 95 or so.

hey folks,

just a note for any fellow australians out there - i was in red
eye records here in sydney last night, and they had copies of
all four of re-releases in digipak format. $32 each, which is
probably cheaper than battling with the exchange rate...

also, dymocks down the street had a few of the songbooks,
and grace brothers had a bunch of copies of "watershed" on
dvd...

i dissagree with that last statement. i dont think it has anything to do
with being famous. it is more political. i think our logic behind the doubt
of amy using aol is the fact that aol is such a large company and has way to
much of a hold on the internet. i think amy would be against that. she's
more for grass roots and the underground. aol is too mainstream.

i am posting one last time to recruit more participants in the holiday card
exchange.

for those of you that don't know what it is...it is a lot of fun! i collect
addresses, put y'all in groups (of about 15), and then ya send all the people
in your group a card for the holidays. it is great fun! (sorry, i know i
already said that...)

everyone is welcome to join! y'all will receive the same number of cards
that you send out...it is a great opportunity to let your creative side
shine. many people include their favorite quote, a photo (of the girls), or
make cards featuring the girls... (while this is a very cool thing to do, you
do not need to be creative in order to join).

it really brings feelings of peace and togetherness to the holiday season
(not to mention...the indigo girls look really cute in santa hats ;))

take care y'all...and please consider signing up!
erin sue (in vermont)

oh, and thanks to everyone that has already signed up....

everyone seems a lot more friendly now!

i live in the indigo girl-less zone know as the uk and i had to pay $15.00

music is great, so i don't care.

on the up-side i received an original reverse 1 - live promo in the mail

some bargains can still be had there.

planetout.com has reviewed the movie "x-men" and called it possibly one of
the biggest allegorically gay films ever. i had never overtly thought of it
in those terms, but since the movie did affect me deeply on that level, i
would tend to agree. the review included the following paragraph:

"as for special talents ... stephen sondheim might not be able to control
weather, the indigo girls might not be able to read minds, and greg louganis
has given up diving to write books about dog care, but they're all pretty
unique in their way. more obviously, like the very blue, very buffed
mystique, our drag queens and kings can change shape and sex at will."

hey all,

a few weeks back, i made a newbie offer. i had about 10 responses. i have
not received anything in the mail.

first of all, please, out of common respect, if you respond to my offer,
please send your tapes asap (or let me know if you can't). when i make an
offer (or most other people) that is because i have some free time right
then...not 4 weeks later.

i know that people get busy and caught up in things, but at least please let
me know. really, i don't bite. don't just send tapes 6 weeks later...

finally, if you haven't sent your stuff yet and are still wanting the tapes,
please do not send me anything now. i am in an extreme crunch with grad
school applications, and i just started a new job. the last thing i have
time for is copying my ig boots. if you still want the tapes, no worries,
just please please please hold off until further notice.

i am sorry if this sounded bitchy, but today, out of the blue, i received a
set of tapes from my first newbie offer back in june. i think that is just a
bit rude.

thanks. and of course, if you want to trade (1:1 i don't have time for
multiple trades), let me know.

:-) karen
first of all, please, out of common respect, if you respond to my offer,
please send your tapes asap (or let me know if you can't). when i make an
offer (or most other people) that is because i have some free time right
then...not 4 weeks later.

i know that people get busy and caught up in things, but at least please let
me know. really, i don't bite. don't just send tapes 6 weeks later...

finally, if you haven't sent your stuff yet and are still wanting the tapes,
please do not send me anything now. i am in an extreme crunch with grad
school applications, and i just started a new job. the last thing i have
time for is copying my ig boots. if you still want the tapes, no worries,
just please please please hold off until further notice.

i am sorry if this sounded bitchy, but today, out of the blue, i received a
set of tapes from my first newbie offer back in june. i think that is just a
bit rude.

thanks. and of course, if you want to trade (1:1 i don't have time for
multiple trades), let me know.

:-) karen

hey, this is my first post. i am a big fan of jam bands such as: grateful
dead, string cheese incident, phish, moe., leftover salmon, and others
jam bands. they all have some kind of taping policy that allows people
with "taper tickets" to bring in recording equipment to record their
shows. now i know that a&e mentioned once that they did not care if
people recorded their shows, except they wanted us to respect the rules
of the venue. i was wondering how we would go about getting a&e to agree
to taper sections at their shows. other bands do it, so there is
obviously a way to do it. it is under strict understanding that all shows
are to be traded or b&ped and not sold. any thoughts on this? imagine the
great quality shows we could have. thanks for listening.

<<thanks to napster i've been turned on to the following, which i think are
some of the best ig songs ever. can anyone update me-- are these old songs
(recorded before the first album was released) or new? i don't
recall them being released on any of their albums:>>

<<carry me away
free through eternity>>

those are on amy's early 80s solo album 'color me grey' (sometimes they are
listed under alternate titles). surprisingly enough, there doesn't seem to
be a definitive cdr of this doing the rounds. (of course, if anyone has a
low-generation, minimal-hiss copy, i'll see what i can do)

<<hey kind friend>>

that would be on 'shaming of the sun'

<<chiapas bound>>

hasn't been released anywhere, but first appeared around 1996 or so...

<<and while i'm posting, can i add that "andy" from come on now social is a
real gem?>>

you certainly can, but i don't agree :o)

hey all, hope you had a great holiday (if your in the us). anyhow i just
wanted to share, my b-friend and i had a conversation about the ig song
"welcome me" - its one of my faves. my b-friend thinks its too obscure and
no one could really understand it. personally i think whatever it means to
you is what its about . . .
but it is pretty confusing, we can't figure out if amy likes la or
absolutely hates it.
oooh and i love how she just belts out "welcome me" at the beginning of the
live version - go amy!
lyrics are included so you don't have to go looking . . .

welcome me
welcome me to your city of angels
devil prophets still hold my hand
i walked your stillborn streets for hours
ethnic echoes spitting out their trials
they tell me i'll be the first to praise the sun
the first to praise the moon
the first to hold the lone coyote
the last to set it free

welcome me to a haven given
it's well received into my open arms
oh i ran in my sleep through shaking tremors
i felt the splitting earth echoing in my ears
i feel it i'll be the first to praise the sun
the first to praise the moon
the first to hold the lone coyote
the last to set it free

welcome me to your city of angels
there's a devil monkey laying on our backs
now tell me where's the heart
where's the bullet for breaking
who's gonna give me a weapon
a pacifying weapon
i need it i'll be the first to praise the sun
the first to praise the moon oh
the first to hold the lone coyote
the last to set it free
i'll be the first to praise the sun
i said i said welcome me
the first to praise the moon oh
the first to hold the lone coyote
the last to set it free
i said welcome me

living in la, it seems to me one of the most easily understood songs. i
think anyone who lives here for awhile has kind of a love-hate thing going.

neil, <<andy>> is one thing you and i can both agree on. i don't like it
either, it's so sugary especially with the electric guitars on the high
notes.

peace everyone.

thanks y'all for all the suggestions! i ended up taking the advice of some
listee whose name i cannot remember and e-mailed them a very nasty letter.
i stated how upset i was with their lack of "customer service" and told them
that i would not shop their web site any more and would also deter my
friends from shopping there. well this morning when i got back to work
there was an e-mail from them saying that their warehouse was out of them
but their customer service department has some left so they will mail one to
me right away. i guess sometimes it does help to complain!

i know this isn't a michelle list (please nobody smack me) but
there are enough fans on this list to appreciate my roommate's sister's
mishearing of the title line of this same song. for months she couldn't
stand the song because she thought the line was "lose weight" and, well,
she thought that was pretty offensive.

that compilation post was good. here's one i haven't seen anyone say. i
could have sworn that in peace tonight emily says "two black dogs and a white
woman running in a field" (instead of white one). listen to it
again...you'll see. i still sing white woman. also i thought the title of
reunion was "intimate strangers". oh well.

didn't amy say that "it's about how when you go to zoo's the animals are
all in cages"

i know she said that somewhere, i think it's o live at the uptown
lounge. i welcome me, it sounds so much like classic 70's, it kind of
reminds me of a song on one of my dad's leonard cohen records.

love the words. i think that was the first time i heard amy interest in
nature come out.

peace

hey barb,

in "live at the uptown" emily intoduces the song saying something along the
lines of "heres a song by amy after we were out in los angelos"

somthing like that.

i know the animals line, but i can't remember where from..... for some reason
i think it was a talk show appearance.

can't wait to find out

or there's another one for you. my gf always used to sing along to crazy
game, and i thought she was just kidding, but just recently it turned out,
she had misheard the first couple of lines.

she would say: crazy case, never should have started to date...
instead of: crazy game, never should have started to play.
now how is that possible, i dont know:)

i am posting once again to recruit more participants in the holiday card
exchange.

for those of you that don't know what it is...it is a lot of fun! i collect
addresses, put y'all in groups (of about 15), and then ya send all the people
in your group a card for the holidays. it is great fun!

(not to mention...the indigo girls look really cute in santa hats ;))

voicing an opinion that selling out to muzak is cheap and stupid and beneath

just wondering : is it likely that rcam is not responsible for selling the
music to companies that produce muzak? it might be that there is a seperate
office at sony that deals with this sort of thing, or a higher level of
management (above rcam)....

excellent point, mr. bond. it may be part of someone's contract to allow
the sales of the material. however, the girls are good about molding their
image to their liking. they seem to mainting control over things of this
nature. i think that's why this thing is such a shock to my ig mindset.
why would they do this? it's got to be the money...but then again, they
don't do things for the money as much as other artists obviously do.

i worked in a wal-mart as a pharmacy tech. for a while when i was
younger (sure beat flipping burgers, and i could tell everybody that i was
a drug dealer!), and there were muzak versions of all sorts of tunes that
you'd never think...
"closer to fine" was one of them, but i think the most surreal thing
was hearing "born in the usa." nothing like hearing songs about
disenfranchised vietnam war veterans to brighten the holiday shopping
experience, eh?

will have to pick it up. i simply cannot run it to you (i am at work and
doubt that i will go home before the show).

shoot me if you must - and perhaps you must - but i tend to find muzak-ized
versions of songs incredibly hilarious.

i always think of the old wkrp in cincinati, dr. johnny fever playing - and
singing along with - the mormon tabernacle choir version of "you're having my
baby". then the new station manager tells him he can play rocknroll and he
ripps it off the turntable and yells "booger" into the mic.

i don't know why, but muzak tends to make me laugh really really hard.
maybe it's just me.

was it the instrumental version of the song?
"muzak" just for the record, is an awesome company.
they have many different channels of music, most of them popular, just like
you would hear on the radio.
they are also way ahead of the game in domestic partnership benefits and
adoption benefits for same sex couples.
my wife works for them, and i would listen to any of their channels.

just wondering if the opposition was because it was an instrumental version
of the song, or because it was muzak.

well, the girls may have a lot of control over the way they are managed, and
the way their image is maintained - but you get the feeling there has to be
a certain limit as to what they can do : these people have lives, for crying
out loud!

i guess a similar analogy can be made with "born in the usa" : even if it is
being played on muzak, when it is obviously inappropiate for it, do you
really think springsteen can be that bothered?

okay, since we are on the topic i am going to tell you my most embarrassing
misheard lines. there are two.

first off, the first few times i listened to sos i didn't look at the titles
of the songs. so when scooter boys came on i swear to god i thought that
amy was saying "screwed up boys". i think if you listen you can hear it.
tell me i am not the only one who hears that!?!?!

okay, my second one is in sister when amy says "sister, go ahead" i still
hear "sister, go t' hell."

i told you they were embarrassing, no one throw things at me!

oh, you've definitely "made it" when there's a muzak version of your
song (note: i'm referring to the cheesy instrumental versions, not the
company itself).

hi everyone,

i knew law school was good for something. under u.s.
copyright law, once a song is released to the general
public anyone can cover it-no permission is needed.
it is called a compulsory license. of course the
girls are entitled to royalties, but the decision to
remake the song is not theirs to make.

later,
diana

thanks emd for your questions/info. it was the instrumental version in both
cases. i should say that what you've said about muzak's benefits etc. is
wonderful to know. obviously as a company they not only are doing well, but
will always do well, and have respect for their employees. the criticism
implied in my original post was meant only to say the instrumental versions
of any song (muzak or other) seem to take away from the original creation,
and sort of "generalize" it for the masses. there are arguments for doing
this, for instance, exposure, or as someone else said, it proves you've
"made it." but "dumbed-down" instrumentals heard in grocery stores and
other public areas seem to remove the spark and creativity of work....which
i understand it is supposed to do to be a sound-space filler, or a calming
agent. so, back to your post, i would much rather hear the original
versions of any song, than the instrumental. muzak versions of the girls
songs take away from the songs the context and the artistry about them. a
bad analogy, but within artistic terms, would be looking at a nice picture
book with great reproductions of paintings or sculpture. you can't get
anything about the piece except the most superficial elements, and you lose
its context. for the indigo girls music, the "context" to which i refer
would be the actual instruments and their voices.

ok i'll shut up. thanks for all your posts y'all.

joe,

you may want to let everyone you forwarded this to know that it's no longer
current. kelsey is safe and sound.

here's the info from about.com's urban legends site:

this alert first appeared on oct. 12, 1999 with a photo of a blonde female
child attached. some recipients were immediately skeptical due to the lack
of specific information, such as the exact location of the incident and a
contact number for the local police who would have been handling the case.
searches of minnesota newspapers failed to turn up any stories about a
missing child named kelsey brooke jones. police and missing persons
databases showed no record of her disappearance and the alert was initially
labeled a hoax.

however, it now appears that kelsey brooke jones does exist and went missing
for approximately two hours on october 11. she was recovered unharmed,
according to a statement from missing children minnesota:

thanks for checking with us about kelsey brooke jones. the staff at missing
children minnesota has carefully and diligently researched and investigated
this case only to discover that kelsey was indeed missing - for less than
two hours! when the family noticed her missing they put out the e-mail you
received. what they did not do is send another message that kelsey had been
found!
we are asking that folks not continue to forward the e-mail, and to notify
their friends, family members, and e-mail buddies that there is no cause for
alarm.

thank your for your concern -- and for your caring.

on behalf of the children,

taylor wilcox, case manager
missing children minnesota

the above information was confirmed by the minnesota crime alert network.
whether the alert was a hoax or real, it now serves no useful purpose. if
you receive the "kelsey brooke jones" email, please do not forward it
further.

well, that's not all it is.. but i suppose you don't have to like it.. muzak
is also a huge sponsor of keeping music in school and they have their own
foundation to help finance this called "the heart and soul" foundation.
while they do offer the "elevator" music, they also offer pop, country, r&b,
oldies,
contemporary, classical, classic rock and others.. they offer vocal and
instrumental versions of the song, so if the store you are in has the
instrumental versions of the songs, it's cause they picked em'

just for the record, i completely understood the context of the criticism, i
just wanted to also let you all know that "muzak" isn't exactly what the
general public thinks that it is..
as i stated in my last post, whatever the company decides to go weith as
their "station" is their choice.
they are offered the original piece of music on one of the many channels, for
example, my wife listens to everything from ig,to *nsync, sarah machlachlan,
faith hill, melissa etheridge and others while at work. by choosing whatever
station she would like.
the companies have the option of getting the instrumental versions, and the
artists are compensated for using their songs.
my suggestion would be to ask the manager at whatever store you might be in
why they chose the instrumental version and ask them to change over to the
"real" stuff.
