sarah and vinnie! i don't actually listen to them much, but i've heard them
make multiple references to how the indigo girls make sarah cry. usually
it's in some form of vinnie making fun of sarah. how funny that he did it
again while a listee was on the phone. :)
i wish i was listening this morning...

i am on my way now to go buy the replacement fishes before i get mariah.....

this morning i woke up with a christmas carol on my mind with different
words...but it started like this:
i'm dreaming of katie couric
and what a great lesbian she would be
she's cute and bouncy and rich
plus she's got a great personality
so all you people, straight, gay, rich, poor, diverse and not
diverse..do you have a verse to add? it's much too early in the morning
for me to go to;
i'm dreaming of touring with the ig's
get it? so if you have a verse, send it to me, i will add it and
compile a list. consider this a way that i can avoid work and cleaning
etc. consider this a way to help someone avoid the holiday stresses.
peace,
mary

this is not really non-ig, since they seem very life'affirming, if you know
what i mean.
so my question is, why should i not kill myself? why not cease to be a drain
on everyone around me? i have done some good, but what is the point? can
anyone here honestly tell me that any of this matters? i'm beginning to
think life is a cruel joke, if it were'nt so obviously random in its cruelty.
the sublime gifts such as ig, beethoven, sylvia plath,,i could go on...only
make things more poignant. i look at the majesty of the night sky here on
the california coast, and i see coldness. cruelty. indifference.
sorry for the bummer.

found someone with a copy of the on the road to austin vid! thanks!!!!!
thomas, reason to live: life itself. it sucks most of the time, yes. but
there are so many wonderful things out there to be joyous about. clouds in
the sky, bird songs, squirrels bouncing around, children laughing (that's the
best), seeing people in love (even if it's not you, it's still lovely to
witness), good books, great friends, dancing, music, good movies, hearing
your favorite song on the radio, having a total strange dog come up to you
with love in its heart and spend five minutes playing with you (happened to
me today :) ), having a total stranger smile and say hi.
and if all else fails, move to texas....there's lots of nice folks here :)
hope you're feeling better soon hon :) *hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
brighest blessings and lots of love to ya,

thanks for all the great, caring responses. the people who like indigo girls
are my kind of people. i'm sorry to bring y'all down but i just can't get
over this feeling of hopelessness right now. ig music has helped me in the
past, so i'm hoping i can do some ig therapy now.
i took a lot of pills and alcohol to be unconscious because i have been so
upset about the evil going on around us. the kind of things ig works
against. i think i could help if i could find somthing to do withm y life
that made a difference. i don't care about making a lot o money, i just want
to see the results of my work, and have enough money to live on, and do
somthing worthwhile. i'm a little naive about how things work though, having
been a motorcycle nomad for 10 years.
i;'llstop babbling now,sorry. i wish i knew amy, she'd have the right
advice, i'm sure.
well, if i survive the night, i'll talk to y'all later.
love, peace, hope.

she's playing it very close to the vest...not even her label manager has

fyi - they may not be "studio takes" but i've seen/heard several demo type
recordings surface on napster from the daemon tour- and yes, i also have
heard a solo version of "devotion" that sounded like it should have been a
solo song.
(that isn't criticism at all about the final version, just an observation)
btw - saw p. simon finally do american tune live last night - it brought
goosebumps - did you know willie nelson also has a cover of it on an album?
i thought it was a great show - lots of new stuff, i could complain , but i
wont - yes - recordings exist for prosperity - (hi neil) and no i dont have
it (yet...)

hey folks,
here's the article that carrie mentioned - url is
http://www.emory.edu/wheel/issue/00dec01/arts3.html
-sherlyn
---begin article---
indigo girls share music, messages of activism
by drew boles
staff writer
and morli desai
entertainment editor
last time they were at emory, it was in academic classes and
residence halls. but when amy ray ('86c) and emily saliers ('85c),
known together as the indigo girls, returned to the woodruff
physical education center tuesday night, their student-status had
faded in the gleam of their star status.
the year of reconciliation committee sponsored the concert,
thinking saliers and ray were an appropriate selection for this
year's theme because of their mass appeal as popular musicians and
their strong political presence. before the indigo girls came out
on stage began, sailer's father, theology professor don saliers,
spoke briefly about the year of reconciliation. the two-hour
performance began with 40 minutes of music followed by 40 minutes
of speaking, in which the indigo girls talked about their life as
activists and then ended with a final song.
"students overall were very happy we had this performance,"said
student programming council president om kakani. "as a whole,
everyone enjoyed the performance who showed up."
however, some reactions to the concert were mixed. "i thought it
was okay, but i expected it to be better because they didn't play
a lot of songs," college sophomore kesha desai said.
while people enjoyed the music, many people left during the
question and answer segment of the performance. "it was my first
time hearing them - wow," said college freshman rose stella. "i
was so surprised that people started leaving during the q and a.
it was very rude."
donning casual clothes and acoustic guitars, ray and saliers took
the stage making a salutary entrance with their hit "galileo." by
the end of the 40-minute set, which included such old-school
favorites as "closer to fine" and "get out the map," nearly all
people in the woodpec were on their feet, dancing and singing
along. "i enjoyed when they had technical difficulties, and the
brunette, amy, showed she was not egotistical and just drowned out
the noise," college senior shanker unnikrishnan said.
while the set spanned the indigo girls' entire career, the
best-received tunes were those from their latest and most
politically charged album, come on now social, including "go," a
five-year endeavor completed at the onslaught of homophobic school
boards, "philosophy of loss," a commentary on the churches of
certain denominations who refuse to ordain gay and lesbian couples
and "faye tucker," a song "for the forgotten on death row," ray
said. these are the songs and the political statements that tie the
indigo girls so firmly to the idea of diversity and reconciliation.
after putting down their guitars, ray and saliers began talking
about their life as political activists. they said their biggest
project to date has been the honor the earth campaign, an
environmental awareness and native american rights coalition that
they helped jumpstart in 1990. based on grassroots ideals, honor
the earth has helped bring attention to abuse of the environment
and native american populations at the hands of the united states
government. saliers said all nuclear wastelands, with the exception
of one, are on the sites of indian reservations.
over the course of the last 10 years, ray and saliershave hosted
four honor-the-earth tours, helping to raise over $1 million for
the organization. as payment for their performance, emory donated
$5,000 to the indigo girls' honor the earth campaign.
the pair said they have had the opportunity to work with charities
because of their successful career. starting out playing in small
bars around the atlanta area during the early 1980s, they garnered
a small, loyal following. in 1988, they signed with epic records
and have since released seven studio albums, two live albums and
one greatest hits album. ray and saliers have been for years
considered an acoustic act and folk duo, their political convictions
are more obvious in their newer songs as they pick up new
instruments, including the electric guitar, the mandolin, the banjo,
the dulcimer and the dobro.
while the indigo girls answered questions ranging from musical
influences to campus residency, their discussion centered mostly
around their sexuality and work within the gay and lesbian movement.
as their career has progressed, their sexuality has become more
overtly infused into their music. ray claims this is simply a
"function of activism," and said that as she and saliers become more
defined in their personal and political lives, their songs follow
suit. expressing gratitude for an open forum on sexuality and
acknowledging it to be a topic never discussed during their college
days, both ray and saliers encouraged the student body and faculty
to reach out and embrace diversity and to "become active in life."

hi all....
i have a quick question and hopefully someone will have an answer.
recently i have been downloading all sorts of fun christmas songs off of napster while at work and came across what was supposedly sarah mclaughlin, jewel and the girls singing "silent night."
after downloading it, i thought it sounded remarkably like enya, so much so that i found an enya version of silent night, too. of course, they turned out to be the exact same song.
does any one know why there are all of those downloads on napster of enya's version of "silent night" though claming to be by the other 3? is there really a version of "silent night" out there by the girls? it would be nice, but i sort of doubt it...
any enlightenment would be great. thanks!

as far as i know, there isn't a version of "silent night" done by the girls.
none that i've kicked up on napster yet, anyway . . . and i keep trying!
i honestly can't tell you what the deal is with the mistaken attributions.
it happens a lot, i think. i've heard a friend mention that people
occasionally intentionally mislabel songs just so they'll pop up in searches
and people will download them. i'm sure there are quite a few other
possible reasons for mistakes to be made . . . people getting an mp3 without
info on the artist, and labeling it (incorrectly) themselves, for one.
among other things, i've encountered an mp3 of the lilith cd's "water is
wide" credited to sarah m., jewel, and the dixie chicks.
. . . now, i love the dixie chicks, but the thought of anyone confusing
natalie maines and amy ray's voices is hysterically funny.
speaking of the chicks, is there *anywhere in existence* a recording of the
time they performed with the girls at lilith? and is the lisa sullivan
mentioned in the thank you section of the "wide open spaces" liner notes (as
one of the "road rats") is the one and only sulli?

my email's acting up. pity me.
the mp3 thing. yeah, you can name any file pretty much anything. with
napster you get what you pay for.
but what is then happening is that folks are downloading indigo girls mp3s,
burning them to cd, selling them on yahoo and ebay and keeping the incorrect
track/artist information. which is a bit of a giveaway (especially when one
of the songs has nothing to do with the indigo girls).
anyway, back to david crosby.
<<can somebody tell me the story of how david crosby first heard fare thee
well and how he came to record it about 3 years before emily did?>>
presumably he was given it it when he helped out with recording 'galileo'.
(emily performed it on austin city limits around the same time but i'm sure
he didn't hear it there first...)
the 1991 date on 'b-sides 2' is either a typo or a cunning deliberate
mistake, depending. in any event he released his version (which is really
ace, if you ask me) in 1993 on the 'hero' cd single (at least in the uk).
and swamp ophelia came out in what, 1994?

i'll bet i know the answer!
orginally, "fare thee well" was recorded by indigo girls in 1991 for the
"rites of passage" album that was released the next year. david crosby sang
backup during those recording sessions.
for some reason, the song wasn't offically released until the 1994 "swamp
ophelia" collection.
around the time they were finishing "rites of passage"
amy and emily appeared on the pbs show "austin city limits" for the first
time. emily performed the song
during that telecast.
does anyone have any other information?

thanks for all the quick responses!
>>for some reason, the song wasn't offically released until the 1994 "swamp
ophelia" collection.>>
i wonder how it would have fit into rites of passage...although that would have been two "solo" songs on one album. i know many quote rop as being their favorite album, but swamp really does it for me, i think it fits quite well there.
>>amy and emily appeared on the pbs show "austin city limits" for the first
time. emily performed the song during that telecast.>>
but doesn't the version on austin city limits have slightly different lyrics? i'm going from memory here...david's version is much closer to the swamp ophelia version, with only a word or two changed (from memory, "who can say that's better" instead of "who can say what's better")...so perhaps he recorded it after their appearance on austin city limits? i'll go with neil on the fact that he probably didn't hear it on there first.
and his version is spectacular. it fits his voice really well, and the light harmonies are superb. like any good cover should, it touched me in a completely different way than emily's version (which is in my top 3 or 4 ig songs).

long time reader- first time writer- or whatever you say. i just couldn't resist spreading the word about a great listening opportunity. there is a weekly radio show out of knoxville, tn that is strictly independent artists. the great thing is that it is cyber-cast! i've heard a great variety including such favorites as dar williams! i know this sounds like a station plug- but it isn't. it really is a plug for a great new artist amy hailstone (a fellow ig devotee)! she will be playing a live performance on tomorrow night's show. she has been described as a product from putting sheryl crow and the indigo girls in a blender. sounds great!
if you like checking out new music- this is the show to listen too.

y'welcome. and (if i do say so myself) you're right. they're not bad at all.
i think indigo originals may be next in line (after b-sides) to be copied
and sold.
fer bummer.
speaking of which, the liner notes to igsorigs are finally up at

but yeah, any suggestions on what can be done next boot-wise would be
most welcome.
i have in mind original indigo and indigo guests (original versions of
indigo girls covers / indigo girls as guest artists on others' songs
respectively) but it's not easy to strike the appropriate tone.
along those lines there's still a survey to be filled out if you haven't
already.

indigo girls
from hob sunset strip
24-hour video webcast begins
tuesday, december 12
12:00 pm pst / 3:00 pm edt
after ten years of inspired writing, recording and unabashed honesty, the
indigo girls are still going strong, delivering instantly recognizable music
that has earned them a permanent place within the world of american music.
bold and reflective, 1999's come on now social is an energetic synthesis of
serious contemplation and impassioned action. bold and funny, the record is
another groundbreaking work from the indigo girls, whose story began back in
1985, when amy ray and emily sailers changed the stage name of their dueling
guitar duo from the b-band to the indigo girls. by 1989 the girls had signed
on with epic records, who released their major label, self-titled debut. the
album featured a guest vocal from r.e.m.'s michael stipe, immediately
lending a college- radio legitimacy to the record and paving the way for the
best folk recording grammy they would receive later that year. check out the
duo with this hob.com 24-hour webcast recorded at the house of blues sunset
strip, in los angeles on july 27, 2000.

hey everybody:
i was just checking the winex website and i saw the issue with emily on the
cover (what a great picture - love the cowboy hat). underneath it says it's
due to be released on december 10. i know people have been checking into
it, but i don't know if the issue date has been posted here yet. i can't
wait to read the article. not only do i love emily, but i'm a huge fan of
wine. winex seems like a great magazine - i think i'll pick up the prior
issue.
now that the girls are on a break, i'm trying to get my hands on anything
that includes them. it's been such a great year for me - being able to see
them 11 times - i just miss them so much, and i'm sure i'm not alone. i'm
going to miss the hob webcast, because i don't have sound on my computer - i
wish they
would put that on vh1 - what an xmas gift that would be for me.
take care

indigo girl amy ray goes 'stag'
amy ray, one half of epic recording artists the indigo girls, will release
her first solo album next year. due march 6 on her own not-for-profit daemon
records, the 10-song "stag" is said to reflect more of her southern punk and
indie rock influences than the pop/folk she creates with emily saliers in the
indigo girls.
ray is backed by durham, n.c.-based punk band the butchies on five tracks
that were recorded by the db's chris stamey. also collaborating with ray on
the self-produced set are daemon artists the rock*a*teens and danielle howle,
as well as the female rock triumvirate of joan jett, luscious jackson's kate
schellenbach, and the breeders' josephine wiggs on the song "hey castrator."
ray is planning to kick off a tour with the butchies in late march to support
the album.
the indigo girls' 15-year career was celebrated with the october release of
"retrospective," a 16-track anthology. the set debuted at no. 123 on the
billboard 200.
