not that she has a crush on that particular rock star chick or nuthin....:)

can't believe i didn't hear about this before now. guess i've been working
way too many overtime hours. sorry to those of you for whom this is old
news...

>from utne.com:

president clinton to consider clemency for prisoner leonard peltier

making an election-day get out the vote phone call to activist amy goodman's
radio show democracy now! on kpfa in berkeley, president clinton promised to
review american indian prisoner leonard peltier's petition for clemency,
reports the international office of the leonard peltier defense committee.
with only a few weeks left before a new presidential term begins, many who
consider peltier a political prisoner are anxiously awaiting clinton's
decision.

leonard peltier, author of the book prison writings, has been in jail for
the murder of two fbi agents for twenty-four years, suffering from diabetes,
high blood pressure, a stroke and a debilitating jaw condition. in the early
seventies, peltier was a leader of the radical american indian movement
(aim) who protested violations of treaties, and abuses and repression
against native americans, most notably with the occupations of the site of
the wounded knee battleground in south dakota and alcatraz island in san
francisco bay.

the fbi carried out intensive surveillance on the group, and on june 26,
1975, two fbi agents, jack coler and ron williams were killed in a skirmish
on south dakota's pine ridge reservation, the details of which were never
fully determined. peltier was charged with their deaths and sent to federal
prison. supporters of peltier believe the government framed him. at
leonardpeltier.com they provide ample evidence that the fbi pursued him with
a vengeance after all other suspects were acquitted, and that his trial was
unfair (citing perjured testimony, unfit witnesses and evidence withheld
from the defense).

during her election-day interview, amy goodman pointedly asked president
clinton: "what is your position on granting leonard peltier, the native
american activist, executive clemency?" clinton gave a politician's
response, but eventually promised to review the case: "well, i don't ... i
don't have a position i can announce yet... i will try to do what i think
the right thing to do is, based on the evidence. and i ... i have never had
the time actually to sit down myself, and review that case. i know it's very
important to a lot of people, maybe on both sides of the issue... and i
think i owe it to them, to give it an honest look-see."

leonardpeltier.com includes many suggestions on how peltier supporters can
get involved, including writing editorials for newspapers, fundraising and
passing resolutions in local nations/tribes and civic groups all in support
of peltier's freedom, as well as information on contacting the white house.
for those interested in the nitty-gritty case details, the site also
includes links to the fbi files, peltier's trial transcripts and innumerable
articles on his case.

oh oh oh!  if  i may... since the day it was released it's barely even left
my cd player... it even overshadowed the new pj harvey and made the last disc
i was addicted to, dido's no angel v.v. jealous. "haunted" is an album that's
centered around poe's relationship with her late father. she found several
tapes with his voice on them and while they sort of freaked her out at first,
she soon began sampling them, constructing a sort of  conversation with his
ghost. the album is full of highs, particularly "haunted", which really
soars... and "wild". throughout the album she also references her brother
mark z. danielewski's novel, house of leaves. if you've read hol, listening
to the album will give you a bit of a different perspective on it. although
while there are some very explicit references to it (the very beatlesesque
song "5&1/2 minute hallway", "dear johnny" & obviously, "house of leaves")
you don't need to be familiar with the book at all to enjoy it. (it was house
of leaves that actually turned me on to poe, so i guess i did it the
backwards way.) there is so much depth to every moment of haunted- layers of
sounds, songs combining acoustic and electronic music, strange voices (sung &
ghostly) 'haunt' the album from start to finish, but when it finishes you can
not help but be moved, and if you're anything like me you'll find yourself
exhilerated (sp?) as well. i really can't recommend this album enough!!!
(just ask lisa- she's been hearing me rant about it since halloween) poe's
got a wonderful website at www.p-o-e.com if you'd like to see some more.

i do apologize for the nigc, but i had to back up bt's recommendation for a
work that i'm clearly very enthralled by. :)

n.c.-based band the
butchies as well as atlanta's rock*a*teens serve as ray's backing bands
on various
tracks throughout the record. the album was produced by ray and mixed in
athens, ga.
by david barbe.

listened to it for the first time.

is she saying "i'm going to miss being the boy. i'm going to miss being the

interesting.  hmm...so is amy ray content indigo girl content?  will we be

well, i hope we can discuss amy's cd.  i haven't heard all of the songs
on that track list, so i hope people will be okay with discussing them
amy ray songs on this list.  i'm on the sleater-kinney list and they
discuss bands from kill rock stars as well as s-k.  i hope we can do the
same here with daemon.  although, i know ig fans aren't going to be all
the same.  to all the soft melodious ig fans: relax and deal with the

remember, maybe last year some time, there was a big discussion on this
list about the word "feminist" and what it means to be one, and how some
people refuse to label themselves as such, even though they embrace
feminist ideals?  well, i just ran into a very cool quote from ani
where she says something about this:
--------------------------------------
"any liberated person who does not acknowledge the actual definition of
the word 'feminist' and refuses to identify as such is effectively
helping the right wing to wipe the very idea from our language".

oh boy there is a lot of stuff going on vt for out of staters who want to
get hitched.

where exactly is pnw  ? not catching the abbreviation....

i have some personal info - lived in vt till last year, have some friends
who have done the civil union thang. there are some catches to remember for
out of staters though:

if you get 'unioned' in vt - you can't dissolve the union if the
relationship should end unless you declare residency in vt and maintain it
for 6 months in order to dissolve the union. you can be subject to all the
fringes of civil divorce also, as far as monetary splits and such. and even
if you moved into another relationship without dissolving a civil union, you
couldn't obtain another without going through the dissolution of the first.

just big 'things' to think about....

here's a link to the inn at essex's info on the civil union legislation.
http://www.innatessex.com/  the inn is a gorgeous place altho expensive.

and here's the link for the vermont civil union and related services
http://www.vermontcivilunion.com/ (looks like an info  loaded site - but
haven't really had time to read through it)

hope this helps!

sorry - pnw = pacific northwest.  a habit i get into due to having to work
around too many boeing people who talk in nothing but abbreviations.  lol

thanks for the info!

we may use the trip as a chance to utilize our new pilot licenses (when we
get them, hopefully this coming summer if all goes as planned) and fly the
country.  then again, the commercial way may be fun too.  :-)

thanks again!!

she woke up and got in bed with j and i sunday morngin and began telling us abotu her dream ( it was 5am!) but she had a dream that she and a few friends had gone carooling . we had also been sworking on xmas songs nad twinkle twinkle little star. but they got to one " cool looking log kinda house" and began to sing , she had her guitar strapped on .....and out walked both the girls ...smiled and listend and then went back in and got their guitars and joined em....

mariah was smiling from ear to ear as she told us this. and then asked if it might ever come true....i told...it could honey...it could...

hkf's,

that's random igc in case that looks a little funny.
(well, it did for me so i figure i'd elaborate a
little bit)  saw kristen hall saturday night at
eddie's attic w/ sam shaber opening up the show (sam's
pretty great too!) and kristen mentioned the one and
only emily saliers towards the end of her second show.
kristen mentioned that her & emily will be getting
together to write some songs and that she was very
excited to be finally working with her.  she said she
had been a little down in the past month or so, so
this little announcement seem to be a very bright part
of the evening.  (well, my ears lit up when i heard it
so it was for me!)  and later on in the evening when
she tried to make up a song and she screwed up & it
didn't work, kristen said something like i hope it
doesn't go like that with emily!

part 2: there were some pretty funny moments & stories
during the night and she mentioned a while back she
was in europe on tour w/ melissa etheridge.  she was
sharing a room w/ emily (i assume it was our emily in
this case) and explained a bit about one of her best
nights out in amsterdam at a place called
something-lu-lu (?).  but the igc part of this came up
since she drank too much and woke up in the bathtub of
the hotel room in a little bit of blue puke (sorry!)
w/ emily picking her head up by her hair and asking -
'you ok?'.

so that was a pretty funny story that ended by kristen
saying - well, the story's much better but i can't
tell you the rest of it.  ;-)  smirks all around on
that one.

but anyway, there's some random igc from atlanta on
your monday afternoon.  =)

"the guerrilla girls are a group of women artists, writers, performers, film
makers and arts professionals who fight discrimination. dubbing ourselves the
conscience of culture, we declare ourselves feminist counterparts to the
mostly male tradition of anonymous do-gooders like robin hood, batman, and
the lone ranger. we wear gorilla masks to focus on the issues rather than our
personalities. we use humor to convey information, provoke discussion, and
show that feminists can be funny. in 14 years we have produced over 70
posters, printed projects, and actions that expose sexism and racism in the
art world and the culture at large. our work has been passed around the world
by kindred spirits who consider themselves guerrilla girls too. the mystery
surrounding our identities has attracted attention and support. we could be
anyone; we are everywhere. "

i, too, am extremely curious about the new album. i really enjoy punk music,
and i can sort of imagine how the album will sound (i'm thinking more along
the lines of amy's recent stuff on cons and "devotion," but i'd like to know
from anyone who's heard these songs).

1. "johnny rottentale"
2. "laramie"
3. "lucystoner"
6. "measure of me" (a.k.a. the boys just laugh)
7. "black heart today"
8. "mountains of glory"

ok, so it looks like i have these ones (most of them are on the rather
spiffy 'indigo originals' - a couple as hidden bonus tracks) but not these:

4. "hey castrator"
5. "late bloom"
9. "on your honor"
10. "lazyboy"

i haven't been looking too hard for them though, so they might be out there.
actually they probably are - amy prolly did one or two on the daemon records
tour.

so, er, if there's interest, and if someone could mp3 me the missing four
tracks*, maybe i could put together a special 'preview'. or even better,
maybe someone else could? otherwise, search out indigo originals - you won't
be dissapointed

i just gave up hope and tried to forget about it.  one of the consultants
tried half the day on friday to get it to work and said the only thing he
could do was order a part for it, but it wouldn't be here by tuesday (i told
him about the webcast).

on monday i came into the office, turned on my computer, and was pleasantly
surprised by that little tune that comes on when you get into windows.  i
immediately leaped out of my seat and shouted - "it's a miracle, my sound is
working".  well, to make a long story short - i am now able to hear the
webcast.
thanks to everyone who offered to record it for me.

merry xmas to me -- fa la la la la.

subject:      any advice???

so i was wondering if anyone has any advice for me about this . . .

where my father works in woodstock, new hampshire there is a group of around
20 feral cats. they have been living out behind this bunch of stores for a
few years and keep reproducing. there are a few well intentioned people who
feed them scraps and food. i am very worried about them as it is very cold
here and there are kittens. there is also a small group of people who hate
these nuisance cats and hit them, throw things at them, etc.
in oregon where i go to college we have the feral cat coalition which offers
low cost spays, neuters, & vaccines for feral cats. i am not aware of any
such organization in nh. i was thinking of maybe contacting area
veterinarians and maybe setting upa fund to get these cats spayed/neutered
and possibly some of them placed in homes.
does anyone have any advice/suggestions??? i will be here (in nh) until jan.
1st and am willing to put a lot of time & effort into this (but
unfortunately i am a student so funds are low). my mother and others in town
are very concerned about these cats.

thanks,

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

>from billboard - http://www.billboard-online.com/feature/1212malone.asp

michelle malone releases 'authorized bootleg'

                    by larry flick

                    michelle malone believes in beating
bootleggers to the punch. instead of
                    battling tape peddlers, she's
assembled a live disc of her own,
                    "strange bird, volume 3: the
                    authorized bootleg."

due dec. 21, the project compiles
13 tracks from dozens of live recordings made around
the u.s. in numerous venues -- from arenas and
theaters to clubs and living rooms.

"i put the best of the best on this record, and i tried to
include fan favorites and previously unreleased songs,"
                    malone says.

"the authorized bootleg," which will be issued on sbs
records (a decatur, ga.-based indie label) in shows
the rocker/tunesmith backed on several cuts by bassists
charlene owen and david labruyere and
                    percussionist michael lorant. otherwise, malone
performs solo on guitar. that should not imply,
however, that the set has a soft musical tone.

"i feel that this record is fiery and passionate, whether
it's rocking with abandon or ripping your heart out," she
says. "i've always had a 'take no prisoners' approach
to performing. this record captures the live energy,
which has always been the best way to discover my
                    music."

sbs is hoping that malone's fan base will expand as
more people become acquainted with the artist's music
in live settings. to that end, the label will service the
disc to college and modern rock stations. sbs will also
aggressively promote the disc to retailers as malone
continues what she describes as her "never-ending
tour" of the u.s. it's a plan that should serve the artist
                    well.

"michelle malone is a journeywoman artist, truly
tireless," says her manager, marlon creaton. "while
she may never become a platinum artist, she has a loyal
following that seems to get bigger and stronger with
each release. she also gets stronger musically with each
cd. her history proves that without question."

malone does not recall a time when music was not a
part of her life. at the age of 4, she began singing in a
church choir. by the age of 10, she had taught herself
to play guitar. at the age of 19, she was encouraged by
amy ray of the indigo girls to perform between sets
                    at their shows.

michelle's first recording, "new experience" (1987),
was released to rave reviews, and she soon found
herself signed to arista records. after 1990's
"relentless," malone says she felt trapped by the
politics of the major-label machine, and she asked to
                    be released from her contract.

having released her last five records in the indie scene,
malone says it's a world in which she feels most
comfortable. "it's a beautiful and liberating thing to
break free from the chains that can keep you from
                    easily expressing yourself," she says.

you can find her stuff on cdnow:
http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/sid=394820598/pagename=/rp/cdn/find/dis
cography.html/artistid=bainbridge*merril
garden is an import cd selling for $22.99

or

you can surf on over to the swap it website www.swapit.com and get the same
cd used for $2.00.  if you've never heard of swap it, it's a site where you
can trade in cd's that you've listened to and don't want anymore for credit
and use them to "buy" cd's you do want.  they have pretty strict standards
about what they'll accept in trade, regarding cd quality...can't be cutouts
or promo copies, discs have to be in good condition with liner notes
included etc.  they even send you a postage paid mailer for you to send in
your old stuff...i know this sounds like an advert for them but they're
great <g>.  amyray, the direct link to the merril bainbridge cd is

happy hunting,

subject: amy ray's solo album

hey everybody,

check out the latest news from amy ray--

amy ray of indigo girls to release solo album, "stag"
in-stores on march 6, 2001
tour with the butchies in april 2001

stag is amy ray's (indigo girls) first solo record and is
scheduled for a march 6, 2001 release on her 11 year old,
not-for-profit, independent label, daemon records. this
solo effort reflects amy's southern punk and indie rock
loyalties, and is a departure from her work with the
multi-platinum indigo girls. the ten songs on stag are
newly recorded and were written specifically for this
solo cd.

according to amy, "stag is heavily influenced by the
musicians who helped create it.  the music of bands like
the butchies, the rock*a*teens, and danielle howle is what
truly inspired me to make this record." the durham, nc
indie punk band the butchies are ray's backing band on
half the album and these five tracks were recorded by
chris stamey (the db's). southern gothic punk legends
the rock*a*teens, who have recorded on daemon and merge,
also provide backup on the record. country/folk/metal
heroine danielle howle adds her distinctive vocals on
a couple of tracks. amy's dream-team joan jett, kate
schellenbach (luscious jackson), and josephine wiggs
(the breeders) met up with her in brooklyn, new york
to record the song, "hey castrator". stag was produced
by amy ray and mixed in athens, ga. by david barbe
(macha, son volt, sugar). the song titles are: black
heart today, late bloom, johnny rottentale, laramie,
measure of me, on your honor, lucystoner, lazyboy,
hey castrator, and mtns of glory.

a 2001 spring tour with amy ray and the butchies in
support of stag is planned for late march and early
april. the stag tour will make stops in austin,
orlando, atlanta, dc, philly, new york, boston, ann
arbor, chicago, columbus, louisville, nashville and
other points in between.

the daemon records website is located at
http://news.indigogirlsdirect.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/mcp?p=63oaq03oaw4sear01200medered8f
it can be accessed for more information about stag
as well as the entire daemon catologue.

hey all,

ok, maybe this is just my craziness, but i was listening to "laramie" again
this morning, and for some odd reason, it reminded me a bit of "down by the
river."  hummm...  is it just me?  anyone?

maybe it was just a lack of sleep, too much snow, or too much dubya, but i
sensed a strong resemblance  but of course this is the first time i came to
that conclusion, so i could be way off.

happy thursday,
karen :-)

i was in cleveland over the weekend for a fencing competition (fun
time, poor directing killed my results...), and i noticed that michelle
was going to be playing an in-store saturday night.  so my teammate and i
ambled on over to camelot music and grooved a bit to her half-hour set.

she asked me if i wanted to hear anything ("since you know all the
words..."), and i tossed out "butter buscuit" -- "devil moon" would have
been the ultimate, but since it was just her and her hamer duotones
(wonderful guitars, those...), the former was well-loved by the few
clustered around listening.

we chatted a few minutes afterwards, and she mentioned that "bb" was on
her new cd, which she had in the car.  so, i got two - one for my little
sister.  the irony of the transaction right in a big chain
megaconglomerate was not lost on my teammate.  ;)

the bootleg starts out loud and aggressive, with amphitheatre stuff
from opening on the ig tour -- there's a killer noise-guitar solo on grace
which really sets a rockin' mood for a few tracks, and then begins getting
quieter and quieter as the venues get smaller and smaller.  "butter
biscuit" guest-stars her mom, and is as playful a cut as they come, and
the album ends with the 1-2-3 standout punches of "tanya tucker," "feels
like christmas," and "wild horses" (very country balladish, no ig...)

i can't say i'd recommend it over a more accessible album to an
unenlightened soul (i've given devil moon to *so* many people...), but if
you enjoy michelle, it's definitely a treat.
