subject: [ig-news] article from the louisville cardinal

i interviewed amy and emily before the louisville show in december...this is
the article i wrote for it...

"group still fears rejection"

it's been a long journey for the indigo girls, spanning decades, eras and now
millenniums. the duo, amy ray and emily saliers, have been friends since
grade school, and performing together since high school. twenty years later,
their interaction stays fresh with new songs and a great new band. their
latest album, come on now social, was recorded in england in early 1999 with
sinead o'connor's band and released in september.

even on their seventh studio album and two decades of experience, indigo
girls can't help but fear rejection when releasing an album. amy ray
reflected on feelings of apprehension when releasing their latest effort:
"we're really nervous when we put out a new record, about how its going to be
received."

there is no need for nerves with this album, especially with tracks like
ray's fiery "go" and salier's upbeat "peace tonight." ray's uneasiness was
partly eliminated this summer on the lilith fair tour.

"while on tour in august, before the record was out, we would notice people
singing along (to songs on social) and that was a very good feeling," ray
said.

sing alongs are well received at indigo girls shows, where ray and saliers
will step back from their microphones and let the fans take over on hits like
"galileo" or "closer to fine."

the enchantment the girls have with this new album is obvious in their
glowing stage presence. they have a sincere relationship with their fans and
a strong drive to have their music and their message heard. they have been on
the road since february. for many bands, this would be an extremely draining
schedule, but for these two women, it has become second nature.

"we always (work this hard), we take several months to do a record, then tour
for a year or so," saliers said. one would wonder how they remain so
incredibly committed to their fans, by endlessly pouring out their energy
into audiences who expect nothing less night after night.

it's simple, they are inspired by the people they play with; they feed off
the audience's energy and they add variety at each show by utilizing their
massive song archives.

when the duo is tired of playing various songs as ray describes, the "i'm
sick of myself syndrome," they simply play a song they haven't played in
weeks, months or even years. luckily, one song, the number one requested song
at every show according to ray, is also a constant favorite of the band.

"there are songs like 'galileo' that we never get tired of playing but some
songs, like 'land of canaan' (from the self titled album) take so much
energy
that you can't play them every night."

reinforcing the girl's commitment to excellence, ray explains that she and
saliers will "only play songs when we have the energy so no one needs to
worry about us being insincere."

through this process, saliers can reflect on how far she has become as a
songwriter: "some of my best songs are my old songs, but i am a little less
melodramatic now, in the way that i express things in love songs. in the
beginning, i would just make myself sick writing love songs. there are lyrics
in some older songs that make me cringe, but the passion behind the song
sounds really good to me still."

ray admits she has been a "late bloomer" in this department: "i'm finally
where i want to be [as a songwriter] and i have figured out how i want to
write. it was a big battle and i had to work on it a lot and finally for
better or worse i am where i want to be and i can figure out when i am
writing a song how to make it better."

as their fans can attest, one uniform variable in their 20-year history is
the message they instill in their songs, like true folk singers.

"it's flattering for someone to take my message and look up to it or live by
it in a certain way or if it eases any pain in any way," sailers said. i know
music has done that for me and it still continues to, music is a motivator."

the band will be touring a great deal. they will be stripping down for a
limited acoustic college tour, and playing some free high school shows, as
well as travelling down under to fulfill the needs of their fans in
australia. they will continue their commitment to political activism with
their honor the earth tour to raise money for grassroots organizations and
the indigenous people of north america.

in the fall, they will start up their suffragette sessions tour which is a
collaboration of various artists on stage in a sort of "high school pageant"
kind of show, according to ray.

subject: [ig-news] shades of indigo, early recordings, 9:30 club

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

do not delete this email.  if you miss this, i'm not sending it out again,
you'll have to get it from someone else.

read this entire email carefully before emailing me any questions.

..... now, onto the pleasantries.... :)

first of all, if you have requested bootlegs from me and haven't gotten them
yet, all in my possession will be going out in the next couple days.  it was
hectic over the holidays with travelling and celebrating, plus, i ran out of
labels, so some are a little late.  my apologies.

next - if you want cdrs of shades of indigo, early recordings or 9:30 club,
follow these instructions.  i'm getting all the newbies caught up here,
before i go on to montreal '94 + reverse one live, which is next in the
queue.

only send me one bootleg request per mailer!!  if you want all three of
these, then mail them in three separate packages.  if you don't it may make
me miserable, and then i'll have to send my girlfriend to hunt you down and
kill you.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------------------------
know that when i receive your request, i will get it back to you as soon as
possible.  please be patient.  due to the demand, it may take as many as 8
weeks before you get your discs back.  here's what you do:

you buy the correct number of blank discs (cdrs, not cdrws) for your
requested bootleg.  put them in a self addressed stamped bubble mailer, with
$1 per disc for art and the signed contract (below).  put that bubble mailer
in a big regular envelope. seal it, address it, stamp it and mail it to me.

please: do not send me boxes.  boxes don't fit in my po box and i
have to go to the counter to pick them up, which takes a lot of time waiting
in line.  do not send me fiber mailers.  fiber mailers break on the edges of
the jewel cases and get all over the cds and make a mess i have to clean up
before i can put it in my cd writer.  do not send me postage and labels to
reuse your outer envelope.  rest assured all outer envelopes are being
recycled, i just can't spare the extra time to do all this and check postage
and what-not.  do not use two bubble mailers - i mean, you can if you really
want to, but why would you?  save your money shipping on the front end, you
don't need to put a bubble mailer inside another bubble mailer, just use a
regular business envelope for your outer envelope. please remove shrinkwrap
from your blank discs.

cdr recommendations:  kodak and imation discs are usually gold with
black logos that show through on light parts of cd artwork, so you may want
to make another choice.  i have had trouble with both imation and memorex
discs and would really appreciate it if you choose something else.  tdks are
reliable, but expensive and some have dark logos on some discs.  some
maxell's have freaky colors that show through the middle of the art and look
funny - avoid these colored discs.  top choices for price, reliability and
non-intrusive labelling are: maxell gold, fuji, verbatim, and sony.  note:
i've had great luck with these:
5 pack cdr media in sleeves 74 min 650mb  wbcdr5sl  4.99 - from
http://www.wholesalebuys.com.  they're only a dollar a disc, and you can
just buy the jewel cases at walmart or wherever.  if you anticipate taking
neil or i up on these offers often, it might be worth your time.

best option:  just send the discs, with no jewel cases.  what you
would do here is carefully place clean, non fibrous poster board or other
stiff paper between the discs (just the little cdr cover that comes in the
jewel case is fine to use, and secure them in some way (wrap paper around
them and tape it) and mail that to me - that way your jewel cases don't get
broken, and i don't have to put the art in the jewel case, i can just stick
it in your return mailer, which is way easier for me anyhow. this is truly
the best overall method in my opinion, and it even saves you some postage.
just make sure you secure the discs between something stiff, like cardboard,
so they don't get broken.

here's the contract:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------cut here
i hereby promise not to copy, duplicate, distribute, or sell digital copies
nor will i make any digital bootleg offers of these indigo girls

(circle one)

1. "early recordings volume i, ii, and iii" (3 cdrs - $3 for art)
2. "shades of indigo"   (1 cdr - $1 for art)
3. "9:30 club and more" (2 cdrs - $2 for art)

...bootleg cds.  i will keep these cds in my possession and will not give
them away.  i will refer all inquiries for digital copies to the person who
supplied my discs, in this case, to tara lane at tara8595@yahoo.com.  i
solemnly swear i will never attempt to profit from owning these cds.

print this out in its entirety and fill it out, including it in your
mailing.  if you don't
have a printer, you may handwrite it out in its entirety.  requests sent
without this signed form will be returned to sender, no exceptions. note
that i really don't
want you giving these out as presents.  if you'd like to make this a gift,
print out this email, give it to the person in a wrapped box, have them fill
out the form, and you take care of the details for them.  i don't care how
you handle it as long as the owner of the discs has filled out this form.

note that i say you can't make digital copies.  there has been some
confusion in the past about adding this to people's trade lists, and if you
want to make analog, cassette copies of these to trade, that's fine by me as
long as you don't profit.

mail the sase, discs, contract, and $1 per disc for art to me at:

tara lane
po box 11305
richmond, va  23230

again, please be patient, and i'll have your discs back to you as soon as
it's humanly possible.

if you need tracklists for these, look them up on neil's site or the
lifeblood site.

take care everyone,
tara

alternatively, depending on your browser, you may be able to
right-click the "igcal.ppt" link and select from the menu to
save the link target...]

okay, here's the skinny:

go to http://www.idrive.com/tara8595.

click on 'shared'.

click on igcal.ppt.

it will begin to download.  it's 5mb so it's gonna take a while depending on
your connection.  when it's done it'll be open in this weird half-web
half-powerpoint window.  click on 'file'. click on 'save as' and then save
it to your harddrive wherever you want it.  or you may be able to print it
directly from this weird window.

if the powerpoint viewer isn't working for you, i may be able to get this
into jpegs, but so far, all my trials have been unsuccessful, and the
calendar always gets corrupted (lines missing).  let me know if y'all have
any trouble.

the cool thing about this is, once you get it saved, you can change the
photos, and add important dates, whatever, in powerpoint.  neato.

have fun, and let me know what y'all think, or if you're having trouble,
etc.

have a good night everyone,
tara
