subject: [ig-news] boot/cd liquidation sale

i am in the process of graduating college and moving, so i've decided to
sell some boots & cd's that i don't really listen to anymore.  i'd prefer
to sell everything in category clumps (i.e. sell the videos together, the
tapes together, the cd's together, etc.), but if there's not much interest,
i'll sell them all separately.  everything is first come, first served.

i arranged prices to cover how much i spent on the tapes in the first place
minus wear & tear plus shipping.  all prices include shipping and are
explained in more detail under each heading.  the ig tapes are $99, the ig
videos are $17, the ig cd's are $51, the dar tapes are $13, & the rent
tapes are $3.  i've been screwed over by people way too many times, so if
we agree to make the sale, you will mail me a check first.  when i get the
check, i will mail you theboots/cd's.  alternately, for the dar or rent
boots, you can mail me an equal number of blank tapes and money for
shipping instead of cash.  if you have questions about quality, setlists,
etc., e-mail me.  if you object to me selling this stuff, e-mail me privately.

(u-wire) durham, n.h. -- emily saliers and amy ray started playing
acoustic
guitar together in ray's basement during high school.

"the first time we hooked up was for a pta [parent teacher association]
talent show,"
  saliers said.

four platinum records later, the indigo girls have come full circle,
foregoing their band
and playing acoustically. the acoustic show will come to the whittemore
center on
  april 20.

"it'll be mostly songs from the new record, but it's going to be done
acoustically, which
will be good for fans who've only heard it on the album," saliers said.

the indigo girls were forced to cancel their march tour of australia
after ray contracted
apendicitis. during surgery to remove her appendix, doctors discovered a
cyst on one of
her ovaries. ray was released from the hospital earlier this month after
two operations.
despite ray's health, the indigo girls have no plans of canceling the
unh show.

"amy's fine," sailers said. "she's recovered quickly and is ready to
go."

the two will play from their latest album, "come on now
social," released last
november. the album features several songs about social and political
injustice in the
  world.

"the song 'trouble' talks about things that are upsetting me in the
world ? like storms
wiping out whole villages, homophobia, and when the church takes a vote
and gays
  cannot be ordained," sailers said.

one of the songs, "faye tucker" is a song about a woman in texas who
recently
  received the death penalty.

song lyrics in "faye tucker" center on politicians and special interest
groups that used
  tucker to further their agendas.

"well the minister wants you to live now/and the governor wants you to
fry/and
whatever it was that you thought might occur/they got something else in
their minds."

saliers said that ray wrote the song out of anger for the death penalty
and the
hypocritical politics that surrounded tucker's execution.

"the part [that] struck amy was all the different sides of people using
her as a pawn,
whether they were pro-life or pro-death, and the fact that she was an
attractive white
women and what that means," saliers said. "amy was looking at all the
groups that had
her [faye tucker] in a tug of war as missing the point of humanity to
try not to be cruel."

saliers said that there were a number of inspirations for the music in
"come on social"
  from homophobia to love.

"it's a good mix," saliers said. "'andy,' is a love song, but there are
also some
get-up-and-go songs like 'call to action,' which thanks the youth who
take a stand."

saliers and ray currently fight for a number of liberal issues,
including gun control, gay
  rights and the environment.

"i think the gun control issue is insane," saliers said. "we've done a
lot with honor the
earth ? a group that was started to help indigenous peoples," saliers
said. "honor the
earth raises money for grassroots efforts that try to maintain
indigenous cultures by doing
things like fighting corporations or growing food using traditional
methods."

the two have traveled the world promoting human rights. in 1997, for
example, saliers
and ray visited havannah, cuba, on a songwriters' exchange, to promote
dialogue
between the united states and cuba.

in cuba, the indigo girls played music with several local
musicians. saliers said that she
was shocked by what the american economic blockade has done to cuba.

"it was like time had stopped in the fifties," saliers said.

their most memorable trip was to violence-torn northern ireland.

"we toured in belfast, and we played in the most bombed hotel in
northern ireland,"
saliers said. "there were soldiers everywhere ? it was just crazy."

the indigo girls played in several local hotels and bars, and were
overwhelmed by the
  positive response to their music.

"and those people, their response to music was like nothing i've ever
seen," saliers said.
"everyone just sang their hearts out. it was unbelievable."

for over a decade, saliers and ray have used their fame to fight for the
rights of
  indigenous peoples.

three years ago, the indigo girls visited the zapatista movement in
chiapas, mexico.
the zapatistas, a group primarily composed of mayans, rebelled against
the mexican
government in 1995 because of alleged human rights abuses.

"the zapatista movement is an armed move, but it also involved the
mayans and
indigenous people in villages who are just struggling to exist under an
oppressive
regime," saliers said. "it is movement for social and political rights
to work land,
preserve their culture and have a voice in the government."

saliers and ray hoped that their visit would encourage the zapatistas in
their fight
against the single party system, human rights abuses and the
exploitation of their land by
the mexican government and multinational corporations

"so much has happened to indigenous encroachment on their culture
? mostly by
profiteering companies," saliers said. "we went down there to let them
know that they
are not forgotten. it was a very powerful experience."

saliers said that she hopes for greater plurality within the
u.s. government, as well.

"i'm kind of a green party girl myself," saliers said. "i don't think
that there should be
only two politically parties, so i tend to support third party
candidates."

although she supports green party candidate ralph nader, saliers said
that she hopes
that at the very least, vice president al gore defeats texas governor
george w. bush
because gore is less conservative on social issues, such as gay rights.

"obviously i'd rather have al gore in office than any of the republican
candidates,"
saliers said. "i think his policies on gays are respectable but not
overly progressive."

saliers and ray have also been active on abortion rights issues. on
thursday, april 13,
the indigo girls attended a pro-choice benefit at sarah lawrence
college.

"we're basically your super-liberals," saliers said.

the greatest change for the indigo girls will come next year, when their
10-year contract
with sony music ends, saliers said. saliers and ray said that they have
no set plans for
after the contract ends, but they will continue making music and
fighting for human rights.

"we'll continue to do our activism work," saliers said. "amy's doing a
solo album, and
  i'll probably do one too."

the indigo girls were originally inspired by many post-punk and black
artists.

"joni mitchell has been the biggest direct influence on my
songwriting," saliers said.
"public enemy, queen latifa, stevie wonder and etta james have also been
big
influences on my music. amy was inspired by neil young and the whole
post punk
movement ? bands like the clash and patti smith."

in 1985, while attending emory college as english majors, saliers and
ray began
playing regularly as "the indigo girls." their first album, "crazy
game," debuted one
  year later.

although their contract with sony will end in one year, the duo have no
intentions of
  splitting up.

"we're going on 28 years, and it's still great," saliers said.

subject: [ig-news] indicated iv and the next big bad boot offer...

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo

hey!!!

so, finally (and i'm really, really sorry it's taken so long :o( ) indicated
iv is mastered and ready to be distributed as part of the next big bad boot
offer. cue audible gasps of excitement and anticipation.

i have to say, everything sounds wonderful, and the artwork is truly
fantastic (i'll try and put it up at www.go.to/neilytones tonight if you
want to see - i might splash the words 'indicated iv' on the front cover,
and then again i might not...')

if you've sent me material you should already have an email from me checking
the details i have for you. unless you're a) chris talbot (i have your stuff
on my work email, so i'll get to that tomorrow, i hope) or b) meredith lynn
(i don't have an email address so if meredith's out there or anyone knows
it...)

i'm also scouting for potential cdr tree branches for this and my latest
boot offer, which should all be ready around the end of the month. here's
what i'm proposing to offer (all soundboard sourced):

the coffee promo and club r+r (two promos on one disc).
red rocks 91 and red rocks 94 (3cd) (digitally remastered, restored,
crossfaded into the most complete and smooth sounding versions of these
shows you'll have heard. even if you have them, it's probably worth an
upgrade)
tipitinas '89 (ditto on the digital restoration)
live x (acoustic) / mountain stage 98 (electric) (maybe for 80 min blanks
only, but these two shows are _awesome_).

possibly peabody's downunder '89 if i have time to remaster it.

plus:
tracy chapman broadcasts and rarities i & ii
jellyfish: belly b-sides and spilt b-sides
if anyone's into them...

if you're interested in being a cdr burning branch person, just let me know
(you don't have to do all the discs, just whatever you're interested in...)

taking a deep breath now...
