ok ok.. this is probably late but i'm on digest.. so deal with it :p

[at the earth day rally in washington].. the girls [were] on dead last [...]
they did hammer and a nail and
then the whole thing ended cause apparently the rally went long (over the
time allotted on their permit..) but the looked cute and amy was sporting the
tank top again :)

according to the ig official site, they will be doing a central park
summerstage concert on june 13.  i've heard (from people who heard the radio
interview) that it will be a benefit concert, ie, it won't be one of the
free summerstage concerts.  this means that tickets will be on sale through
ticketmaster and also through summerstage.  they've got a website --
www.summerstage.com -- but no summer 2000 info is up yet.

here's more about the duke university ig concert
scheduled for april 26, courtesy of the campus
council. for more info, please contact jim lazarus
(see his sig for contact info), not me. [...]

-----original message-----

thanks for your interest. the concert will begin
wednesday night at 7:30 pm, when the agents of good
roots take stage. following them will be michelle
malone, and the indigo girls will take the stage
around 10 or 10:30pm.

the concert will be held on the main west quad, known
as the ci quad. the stage will be set up directly in
front of the alpine bagels/chic fillet area.

the concert is intended primarily for undergraduate
students (who paid for it). as can be accommodated,
however, the rest of the duke community is welcome to
attend. there is no admittance procedure, per se, but
duke police will have certain entrances to the campus
blocked off to all but concert staff. if you are able
to come onto campus, you are more than welcome to
attend.

any more questions, please let us know.

cheers!

subject: [ig-news] new notes from amy

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

happy easter everybody!

here's the new notes from amy at the daemon site:

daemon records: d.o.b 1990

what does it mean to be around for ten years? well, if you're a ten-year-old
indie label in the year 2000, you've seen a lot of changes. the
telecommunications act of 1996 symbolized the worst of them. the large
mergers of radio stations that ensued flushed away any lingering diversity
and opportunity on the radio waves. deregulation reflected the times as
record companies, retail outlets, distributors, and concert promoters lost
their identities to corporate conglomerations. thanks to our neo-liberal,
profit-driven globalized government, bigger is better in the biggest way
ever. so how did this affect daemon records? when my adventures in the music
underground started, it was 1985 and i was in the indigo girls, putting out
our records on our own label. we got signed to a major label in 1988 and two
years later daemon records was born. at the time, college radio was just
starting to be exploited by opportunistic major labels, but there was still
air space available and bands enjoyed consistent support by the college
radio sector. now, indie bands dodge major label promotions-and they range
from free sweat pants with the newest hipster band to plane tickets to some
priceless rock god show-and then find themselves competing against major
label bands for what little airspace is available. the hip factor of the
independent scene was commodified as soon as the secret of college air play
was discovered. ten years ago, there were still a good many honest-to-god
indie distributors and independent labels who were still self-governing and
self sufficient. now, small labels and distributors struggle to stay afloat
as they swim in the corporate owned waters, constantly tempted by the
lifeboat of buyout clauses and exclusive profit-driven deals. it's hard to
keep up with who owns who or say what really qualifies as indie anymore. by
the strictest definition, daemon is independent. we have struggled through
many years to maintain our autonomous place in the industry despite our
musically diverse and devoutly unhip tendencies. we have resisted advice to
become a niche-driven label, because we find our greatest pleasure in
discovering and supporting all styles of music, from folk to punk. sexism
was a factor when we began and it still is. homophobia is as well, but these
two usually come hand in hand. (when i started daemon, there wasn't really a
riot grrrl scene. even after riot grrrl developed, it took a long time to
get down to the south.) as an indigo girl, i have lots of experience dealing
with the alienation that comes with being a political, lesbian, woman
musician and the ghettoizing of any band or label that is willing to give
parity to women musicians and revolutionary ideas. my goal for daemon is to
provide a reliable, community-based infrastructure for musicians to create
and distribute recorded projects and learn how the industry works. we
operate as a not for profit co-op with business practices that will ideally
lead to coalition-building within the underground and a strengthening of the
community. for instance:

*we bank at a credit union instead of a bank and we use a socially conscious
investment firm *we patronize non-corporate businesses such as co-op
printing companies or mom and pop record stores
*we use all environmentally responsible materials from posters to t-shirts
*our website supports a number of activist causes and serves as a place for
dialogue about current events
*our artist are expected to give a minimum of fifteen hours of labor for the
label
*daemon reaches out to other independent labels, sharing databases and
resources with other bands and record companies, and sponsoring arts events
and all ages shows that include non-daemon artists.

in a decade, daemon has put out over forty releases. while some of them have
found their way to obscurity, none of them are a waste of shelf space or
time. our first release was the melodic punk band ellen james society. they
helped put us on the map, selling over ten thousand records. gerard mchugh,
terri binion, kristen hall, and rose polenzani put out acoustic records that
exemplify daemon's emphasis on superior song writing. danielle howle, punker
and story teller, defines our range of musical styles. daemon reintroduced
the legendary punk/new-wave icon, holly beth vincent (formerly of holly and
the italians) with her then band, the oblivious. other daemon punks include
the alabama garage band three finger cowboy, the reverb-drenched rockateens,
and the bad-ass kids 6x. meanwhile, jesus christ superstar: a resurrection
featured over 150 georgia musicians and raised over fifty thousand dollars
to fight against gun violence. honor combined the efforts of native and
non-native artists to raise over forty thousand dollars and benefited
indigenous environmental activism. our latest venture into hip hop, trip
hop, and acid jazz have resulted in releases by justin hale, ph balance, and
mrs. fun (respectively). there are many more cool records in our catalogue
and each one serves the purpose of artistic expression and rebellion in a
world that certainly needs it. daemon's sense of community and political
activism came out of something intangible and organic, and has grown through
the years to become the very
foundation of the label. daemon is a sum of all its past and present
bands-their activism, their creative notions, their music, their
personalities, and their communities. at ten years of age, we embrace the
challenges and changes that have brought us this far, and we look forward to
ten more years of music and revolution-and evolution.

claudine
