subject: [ig-news] 10 years of daemon & some cool new dug stuff

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

hey~~

i don't know if many of you know about daemon underground, or dug...

but they are in the process of revamping their main site & have also added a
sort of new interactive one, which includes a message board made specifically
for everyone wanting to try to meet up at some of the daemon anniversary
shows. the message board is located on the web page titled "daemonites
unite" & there's some other fun stuff to go mess around with too.

if you've never heard of dug... you can go check it out here:

http://www.daemonunderground.com

(or you could link to it off the daemon site; link is on the links page)

the new interactive dug site is here....

daemon
underground

or...

http://www.trak.to/daemonunderground
(there's an annoying banner ad but you can click the x & get rid of it)

or...

http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/stonetemple/1186/
(no annoying banner ad, but a lot of url to remember)

if you have any questions about this email, send it to me privately. any
questions about the site, email the addy's given there.

later!

this is from the university of cincinnati's newspaper. [...] it fills
up almost a whole page, and there are 5 pictures, 3 of which i haven't seen
before, the one from the intro page of the web site, and one from sots.

shades of blue

           by dale francis smith
           et cetera editor

the atmosphere in zimmer auditorium may be a bit blue friday when the
indigo girls, along with tracy conaty, discuss gay rights.

the indigo girls will also insert a few songs into the mix.

part of the presentation will include an open forum for participants to
voice their opinions, their experiences or simply to ask questions. in past
talks, the forum has become deeply personal, according to amy ray of the
indigo girls. ^ˇthe question period is a testimonial period,^˘ she said.

the indigo girls have personal experience with sexual orientation
discrimination. a few years ago, a series of shows was canceled when some
parents, principals and school board members raised concern about the
indigo girls sexual orientation. the idea for a high school tour came after
the indigo girls judged a high school lyric writing contest.

^ˇwe were struck by the students^˛ energy and willingness to engage in and
question life. a minority composed of homophobic, narrow-minded parents,
weak-kneed principals and school boards has successfully enforced a policy
of hate. our public schools should be a safe environment for an open
exchange of ideas and a chance to explore one^˛s own individuality,^˘ said ray.

though not always political, the indigo girls^˛ music often has social and
political overtones.

the song ^ˇprince of darkness,^˘ from the 1989 release indigo girls is filled
with desperate, dark images that simply bleed sadness into the air. ^ˇnow
someone^˛s on the telephone, desperate in his pain/ someone^˛s on the
bathroom floor doing her cocaine/
someone^˛s got his finger on the button in some room/ no one can convince
me we aren^˛t gluttons for our doom,^˘ they sing.
^ˇthe most natural thing in the world for us is to marry social activism
with our music because our music is so deeply rooted in life issues,^˘ said
emily saliers of the indigo girls.

conaty, who will participate in the discussion with the indigo girls, was a
field organizer and later communications director for the national gay and
lesbian task force. she brings to the forum years of experience battling
hate-related violence and anti-gay legislation, including the recent
proposition 22 in california. proposition 22, or the defense of marriage
act (doma) is a bill that denies marriage rights to homosexuals who
obtained legal marriages in other states. it was passed by a 61.4 percent
vote on march 7.

there will also be other speakers, including julia ^ˇbutterfly^˘ hill, who
spent more than two years in a redwood tree in california to protest the
logging industry.

tickets are free, but must be picked up at the student organizations and
activities office, room 221 tangeman. students must present a uc
identification card in order to receive tickets.

"come on and sing along if you want to, cry if you have to, lean back into
your lover's arms, grab the hand of the person standing right next to you
and show them you are not afraid of who you are."
    ~melissa ferrick
