  wednesday, june 28, 7 p.m. cst
  emily saliers
  indigo girls

emily saliers, half of the grammy award
winning duo from georgia - the indigo girls - chatted with readers june 28
- - the day
before she will be dishing up her
folksy-style of rock at summerfest on the briggs & stratton big backyard
stage. saliers'
songwriting style has been compared to that
of joni mitchell - a gentle, complex sound leaning toward the abstract
spiritual side -
which is in contrast to her partner, amy
ray, whose influences span the punk rock genre. saliers and ray have been
  guitar-slinging together since the early
'80s.

q: -- when are you playing tonight?

a: emily saliers -- now! i gotta go do a show. thank you
all for visiting with me. come see our show tomorrow night at summerfest.

q: emily of michigan -- where are you playing tonight?

a: emily saliers -- we are playing in cedar rapids, iowa at
the paramount theater.

q: wendy of dekalb -- what musicians to enjoy listening to?

a: emily saliers -- so many. i love a lot of rap music,
hip-hop - queen latifah, public enemy, tu pac, rage against the machine,
filter, tori amos, joni mitchell,

heart, aerosmith, tlc, cibo matto just to name a few.

q: jordan of pleasant grove utah -- amy often speaks out
about being bi sexual, and i know that you are gay, are you bi sexual or
just gay? in other words would
you give this guy a shot? p.s. are you seeing anyone?

a: emily saliers -- the only reason why i wouldn't give a
guy a shot is because i am in a committed monogamous relationship. if i
weren't in a relationship, who
knows what would happen.

q: jason of mequon -- it seemed with your song "southland
in the springtime" you were going for a more country sound. was your song
"nashville" a response
to your experiences in this genre?

a: emily saliers -- no, amy wrote nashville. that song was
about her experiences at vanderbilt university. as far a genre goes, i feel
like a lot of my songs have
a country bent to them and if they were produced that way,
they would sound very country. i love country music. my favorite country
band it the dixie chicks.

q: jordan of pleasant grove utah!! -- iam haveing trouble
picking(no pun intended) up the banjo, i love your playing and i was
wondering when you 1st started
playing did you start playing basic or did you start with
like a blue grass style? p.s. i love you!

a: emily saliers -- that's sweet. i started playing banjo
3-4 years ago. "get out the map" was the first song i wrote on banjo and i
actually don't really have any
banjo technique at all. i sort of play it like a guitar.
so, don't feel bad if you can't play it like you think you should. i am,
however, going to learn some bluegrass
licks because i love real bluegrass banjo. i just haven't
learned it yet.

q: karen peeters of sturgeon bay -- how old were you when
you first started playing guitar?

a: emily saliers -- i was 9.

q: carla of milwaukee -- are you planning on visiting any
of the lesbian bars in milwaukee? are you in a relationship now?

a: emily saliers -- we're both in relationships and we
don't usually go out to bars when we are on the road. i don't usually go to
bars much anymore.

q: jason of mequon -- i heard once that you were rem's
favorite band. what is your connection to rem?

a: emily saliers -- i've never heard we are rem's favorite
band. we've been friends with those guys for a long time. we met because
rem lived in athens and
we lived in atlanta and scott litt produced our first epic
record. he had been producing their records. so, they came in the studio to
do a song with us. then,
they offered us a leg of their green tour.

q: sally of south milwaukee -- your songs are beautifully
complex with many chord changes. does this fact have something to do with
the reason why you
change guitars after nearly every song?

a: emily saliers -- we change guitars because of tuning and
because the different guitars have different sonic textures, so we use
different guitars for different
songs. it is quite a luxury.

q: carol of oak creek -- will you get an opportunity to
walk around and enjoy the michigan festival or will you quickly be ushered
in and out? i hope your
celebrity status doesn't interfere with a chance to enjoy a
wonderful experience.

a: emily saliers -- we're going to try to wonder as much as
possible. the day after we play we are going to join our friends, the
butchies, in their set.

q: jenna of chicago -- have you ever performed with cheryl
wheeler? when? how was it?

a: emily saliers -- no, we have not performed with her. i
really like her music. i am pretty sure that she was at one of the ben &
jerry's folk festivals that we
were at. she wrote the song "aces" which i love. i have met
her but we haven't performed together.

q: joanne of waukesha -- emily, you are the finest
guitarist around! how long did you study classical guitar.

a: emily saliers -- that a very nice thing to say. i
studied classical guitar for 2 years when i was eleven. you should see
shannon curfman or michelle malone
play guitar. they're incredible.

q: carol of oak creek -- emily, you and amy are simply the
best! my question is, how do you approach songwriting? do you write the
lyrics or melody first?

a: emily saliers -- kind of both at the same time, usually
i will find a chord progression and depending on the music it will guide me
to access different things i
have been thinking about. then, i start off by throwing in
some specific images with a bunch of jibberish, then edit the lyrics as i go.

q: charlie of milwaukee -- are there any places that you
play each year during gay/lesbian festivals? if so, where?

a: emily saliers -- we've played in atlanta and d.c. if we
are not traveling during gay pride, we will play in atlanta. and we invited
ourselves to the michigan
womyn's festival in august.

q: sarah of milwaukee -- will there be another lilith fair
someday? are you friends with other performers from lilith fair? do you get
together with them often?

a: emily saliers -- i don't know. that's up to sarah. but
we would love to part of it. yeah, we keep in touch with joan osbourne. she
just sang with us in nyc a
couple of weeks ago and of course some of the women artists
on the new record are people we met at lillith. we met a lot of women that
we keep in regular
contact with.

q: lizzy of milwaukee -- the indigo girls have written a
number of songs documenting the struggle of american indians, even
including live performances at
reservations on 1200 curfews. could you discuss how you
became involved in advocating for american indians? also, how has the
american indian community
received your efforts?

a: emily saliers -- we joined up with winona laduke at
earth day in 1991 and began to merge some environment work with hers
because a lot of the
environmental issues are happening on indian land. ie.
toxic waste dumping, mining, clear cutting, slaughter of the buffalo. we
have been really well received by
the communities. it has been sort of a cultural change and
we are always respectful that the decision comes from the communities not
me and amy. it has been
the most inspirational work of our lives.

q: jen of milwaukee -- welcome to milwaukee and the big
gig! you and amy are known for your harmonies and incredible vocal
interactions. when one of you
writes a song, how much freedom do you give the other in
deciding what parts to sing and how to sing them? (btw, i learned to play
guitar through ig music, so
thanks for all the lessons!)

a: emily saliers -- you're welcome. it's kind of a give and
take when we are arranging songs. sometimes the first idea that one of us
has many not seem like the
best idea, but then it grows on us. and a lot of times it
just feels right right away, but the songwriter has the ultimate veto,
that's our rule.

[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was

hey all,
[...]
michelle malone did pretty much the same set both nights, and both were
fabulous. emily played guitar and sang backup with her on strength for two,
as she does on michelle's homegrown cd. [...]
shannon curfman impressed me with her poise for such a young woman. she
had a great backing band and her set list was similar both nights as well,
but equally entertaining. that girl can sing and play like a powerhouse.

ok, now for the girls, i'll start with their set list, which i didn't see
posted in the 257 emails that awaited me when we arrived home:
peace tonight
ozilline, with michelle malone
least complicated
shame on you, with michelle malone
andy
i don't wanna know, with michelle malone (of course : )
trouble
romeo and juliet
get out the map, with michelle malone
cedar tree
cold beer and remote control
go
closer to fine
gone again, with michelle malone
philosophy of loss
chickenman, with michelle malone
bury my heart at wounded knee, with shannon curfman and her band and
michelle and her accompanying guitarist
galileo

emily wore a striped shirt over a yellow tshirt with a red and yellow
design, gray pants, her boots and it looked like she had the glittery blue
eye shadow on
amy wore a brownish shirt, gray pants and her cowboy hat, which was super
cool

michelle malone and ig were all pretty chatty...they'd had a day off before
and spent all day in tuesday, golfing, biking, bowling (at 20th century
bowl) and ate many meals at happy chef, according to emily. happy chef was
right by our motel and we dined there as well...not too bad

the crowd both nights was just tremendous. i was thrilled to be surrounded
by dancing, cheering people who were just as thrilled to be there as i was.
[...]
michelle
