earnestness pays off for indigo girls

indigo girls (house of blues; 1,000 capacity, $35)
by steven mirkin
hollywood (variety) - although sarah mclachlan decided not
to organize a lilith fair tour this year, that hasn't
stopped the indigo girls from continuing the female-centric
festival's sense of community and sisterhood on their own
summer tour.
the first of the georgia duo's two shows at the house of
blues was marked by a warmth and generosity of spirit. it
could be felt in the set's two-hour length and in their
sharing the stage with guests vonda shepard, opening act
ms. fun (whose tiresome set proved she was clearly
misnamed), and even their tour bus driver, who sat in with
the band on an impressive bluesy encore.
the music embraced a wide range as well. in the last
decade, the indigo girls have moved beyond ardent folk of
their debut, adding elements of bluegrass, zydeco and soul
to the mix. on this tour, they've turned themselves into a
modern southern rock band.
the songs from ''come on now social'' sounded like a less
oblique r.e.m., as they mixed chunky '70s guitar sounds
with rustic touches supplied by mandolin, banjo and
accordion. and when the band stretched out songs such as
''compromise,'' it was possible to imagine amy ray and
emily saliers as a kind of allman sisters.
the crowd favorites were still the older songs such as
''power of two'' and ''closer to fine.'' but these were
the least interesting from a musical standpoint. when
saliers and ray, who played a variety of instruments, both
picked up acoustic guitars, they turned into a pair of
dewy-eyed junior counselors ready to lead the camp in an
earnest ''kumbyah'' at the drop of a hat.
but for the indigo girls, such earnestness is obviously a
virtue.
presented inhouse. band: amy ray, emily saliers, matt
brubeck, blair cunningham, clare kenny, carol kenny.
opened and reviewed july 27, 2000; closed july 28.
