hey folks,

here's the metroland concert preview article that kelly
mentioned.  it's online at

night & day

indigo girls

the biggest show that took place last year at empire state
plaza was unquestionably pat benatar's gig, which drew a
whopping 25,000 folks to downtown albany. so it will be
interesting to see if this year's big act, indigo girls,
will match or exceed benatar's drawing power when they
play a free concert on saturday (aug. 12). for while
benatar cut her crowd-pleasing chops back in the days of
'70s and '80s arena-rock, the indigos have built a cult
following through steady recording, touring and
appearances at socially conscious events including lilith
fair.  singer-songwriters emily saliers and amy ray may
not have benatar-sized hits in their repertoire, but, as
the success of lilith fair proved, it's unwise to
underestimate the fervor of chick-rock fans.

ever since they turned heads with the sensitive lyrics,
plaintive harmonies and lilting melodies of "closer to
fine" and "galileo"--their late-'80s breakthrough
hits--saliers and ray have epitomized the sincerity,
activism and intensity of contemporary folk-rock. because
the duo began playing together in college, their early
albums are filled with big ideas about changing the world
and intimate, acoustic-guitar-driven grooves. but as the
band grew, they added more and more electric-guitar
crunch to their sound; by 1994, they had evolved enough
to release the growling "touch me fall," which echoed the
grungy menace of nirvana's music. more recently, the
group released their seventh studio album, come on now
social, which features catchy radio candy ("peace
tonight"), a charged political rant (the anti-death
penalty "faye tucker") and various other flavors. the
indigos' next album is a greatest-hits package, which
will be released this fall.

through all of their musical adventures, the core of the
indigos' grammy-winning sound has been the chemistry
between saliers and ray: saliers is a sweet-voiced folkie
and ray is a husky-voiced rocker, so their harmonies have
variety and tension even though they're often as smooth
as glass. the indigos, who were last in town a year ago
for a headlining show at saratoga performing arts center,
will share the stage with eclectic trio hue, composed of
three singers who play piano, viola and cello.

indigo girls and hue will perform on saturday at the
empire state plaza (downtown albany), beginning at
6:30 pm. admission is free. for more information, call
473-0558.

after the big plaza show, by the way, the chick-rock
vibe will continue with an all-girl extravaganza at
valentine's. new york city pop-rockers antigone rising,
touring behind their new & used release, will share a
bill with several area players: anti-folk fave paddy
kilrain, poppy singer-songwriter kim buckley and
indigo-flavored duo the vibe, featuring mary kay connors
of mk4. (rumor has it that boston rocker melissa ferrick
may also turn up at the show, so the girl-power vibe
should be as powerful at valentine's as it will be
earlier in the night at the plaza.) the valentine's gig
starts immediately after the indigos concert and
admission is $5; the club is located at 17 new scotland
ave. in albany and the club's number is 432-6572.
