ballet's musician hirings hit sour note

by wendell brock
journal-constitution staff writer

six weeks before its season opens, the atlanta ballet said thursday it will
hire musicians from the czech republic for the october world premiere of
"romeo and juliet" and its annual holiday "nutcracker."

outraged orchestra members, who have been engaged in a rancorous 11-month
strike over a pension package, said they would continue to picket. and
atlanta's indigo girls, citing the ongoing labor disagreement, said they were
pulling the plug on a proposed march collaboration with the 71-year-old
company, the nation's oldest.

[...]

russell carter, the indigo girls' manager, said his clients were canceling
the proposed partnership because they did not want to appear to be siding
with the ballet on the issue. the indigo girls are themselves members of the
atlanta federation of musicians.

[...]

after the ballet announced the indigo girls' deal in june, the folk singers
said through their management that they were concerned about the pending
labor disagreement. at that time, they said they had not signed a contract
with the ballet. "amy [ray] and emily [saliers] had hoped to be a positive
influence on bringing about a settlement," carter said thursday.

after the ballet used an indigo girls image in a july 30 ad in the atlanta
journal-constitution, carter said, "i just had to put them [the ballet] on
written notice that we don't want to see any more ads."

unfortunately, the ballet's season brochure has already been printed -- with
the indigo girls' picture. in a press release thursday, mcfall said: "it was
never our intention for amy and emily to be used as national pawns in what is
a local dispute that they have had no part in."

said carter: "they have decided to cancel because they did not want an
agreement to work with the group to be perceived as support for the position
of the ballet's management."
