the article and photo are, indeed, grand. i did think it was not
insignificant though that the photo of ig was inside the paper, while a
photo of ex- ratm's zach was on the cover -- even though the article spoke
much more favorably about ig, and the photo of ig actually showed them being
political activists. but i'm pleased that they got so much coverage.

hi all and happy new year! i had an absolute wonderful new years eve. we
went to eddies attic in decatur, ga to hear michelle malone. she did 2 shows
(one at 7 and the other at 10). gerard mchugh opened up for her for both
shows. i must say that those shows were absolutely amazing. they were byfar
the most high energy shows i have ever seen her do......and great setlists
too. gerard was good too...he did thin line in both of hits shows. but i
must say that the best part of my night was when amy ray walked in. it was
so cool. she was there for the entire first show. no one bothered her at
all.....she was just hanging with her friends like everyone else there. of
course i was about to have a heart attack ( i'm an amy person.....if you
can't tell). well, just thought i would share my incredible night with
everyone......hope yall had a great new years eve as well.

arts & leisure
"no last hurrah yet for political rock"
by ann powers
...............................the folk-rock duo the indigo girls may best
exemplify the thriving side of activist rock. amy ray and emily saliers have
had some chart success during their decade long career but are sustained by a
large subculture rather than general adulation. (their recent career
compilation, with liner notes by the feminist author susan faludi, was called
"retrospective," not "greatest hits," because the pair hasn't had enough hits
to earn the latter title.) making music that touches both the mainstream and
the underground is just the first contradiction the duo uses to its
advantage.
recording for epic, a major label, the group maintained independence by also
founding the independent daemon records, a co-op run by artists, in its home
base of atlanta. extremely supportive of causes ranging from gay and lesbian
liberation to the rights of indigenous americans, the duo nonetheless mostly
records love songs and uplifting ballads. and though the indigo girls'
melodious style and sound directly connect with the women's music movement
spearheaded by lesbian feminists like holly near in the 1970's, ms. ray, in
particular, associates as closely with the rough-edged future-looking punk
scene; her solo album, to be released this spring, features members of the
raw-sounding bands the butchies and the rock*a*teens.
engaging seemingly opposed forces to further their agenda, the indigo girls
have survived as political artists without need for a single galvanizing
cause. unlike their countercultural forebears, ms. ray and ms. saliers don't
see themselves as part of a historic wave; even as they work within the
corporate music industry, they maintain a position of relative independence.
"i see the underground - the internet, independent media, community radio,
indie labels - as being our lifeblood," ms. ray said in her keynote speech at
the rockrgrl conference for women in music, which took place in seattle last
october. such a statement by a major-label artist plays down ideological
distinctions between the radical edge and the compromising center in favor of
a down-to-earth approach that opens activism to everyone. it fits a vision
not oriented around an over-arching movement but embracing an array of
interests, including animal rights, environmentalism, prison reform and the
fights against sweatshop labor and police brutality. this vision holds up
neither the fringe radical nor the political insider as a hero; it asks
everyone to not glorify his own role but simply keep involved.
to some, this may seem the politics of lowered expectations. but this
steal-the-spotlight approach is creating a vast field of activism whose
impact is only now beginning to be felt................................

hey all!
happy new year. i hope everyone had fun and fully recovered from new years
eve festivities. :-)
anyway, i know that many of you are on the daemon announcement list, but just
in case you're not, you can download an mp3 of amy's late bloom at
www.daemonrecords.com. there is also a scan of the cover art for stag. and
there is also a free rose polenzani download.
secondly, the ig listees webring is still up and running. if you have a
site, please please submit it! your site does not have to contain igc
(although igc sites are welcome!), it just has to be your site! :-) to
join, go here:
http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=iglistees;action=addform;b=
if you have any further questions, please e-mail me. :-)
finally on a more personal note, if you owe me any boots (there are a few
people who do) and they are quite overdue, please send them to me. i am
asking nicely. there is nothing that i hate more than being ripped off.
right now, i am taking a hiatus from all trading and copying because i am
still awaiting long overdue tapes to arrive. if you need me to send you my
address again, please e-mail me. thank you.
happy new year!
:-) karen

hello there,
i hope the new year is going all right for you all. i'm using library computers until my service is restored .i'm not used to doing things that way so this feels alittle funny right now. when you have
a webtv unit, you may have some limitations, but there's also a more personal feel to it because it's like you're watching tv, accept you're doing email...or whatever you do when you're on the net.
there's no great big computer screen..you know? and at home there are no time limits . i listened to leaving and devotion, and for what's worth, i still don't think the retrospective is worth the price of a full cd, mainly because it's not aimed at us hard core long-time fans, but to reel the newcomers in.
isn't that the way most "best of" and "greatest hits" releases are intended? and they're usually released when the artist is off. leaving and devotion are much better live, on retrospective they are as usual way way way overproduced, tone the instruements down so as to bring out the voices. the voice is the mostimportant part of those songs, without that you can't understand the words.well off to check the official site. see ya. feel free to catch me here until further notice.
peace

*amy ray - stag*
click on the link to download “late bloom” by amy ray off her upcoming
release, stag. amy chose this song for the site because of it’s daemon
roots. the guest band on this track is nineteen forty-five which features
former members of three finger cowboy.
we’ll post more mp3’s, video, auctions, and freebies over the next few
months so check back often.

yeah, but she sounds so impressive when she calls them ms. ray and ms. saliers. :-)
on the plus side, she gave tons of publicity to stag, which is impressive coming from nyt.

hey -
i haven't seen any commentary on the daemon download (granted, i'm on
digest...) but i just want to go on the record saying i think it sounds
great - i like the song, the arrangement, the energy - i'm *so* excited
about this cd...also the new patty griffin is rumored to be
outstanding...and of course, speaking of new cds:
did anybody check out danielle howle's live chat last night? i was making
dinner and forgot all about it. i am quite curious about what she's up to
these days, and when the new tantrums cd is coming out, etc. if anybody
happened to get a transcript, or would be willing to just relay to me the
gist of what she said, i'd appreciate it.
happy new year,
sarah

short answer: there is no way to convert the downloaded file to .wav (the cd
burnable format) directly (as far as i know). you have to use a software
program like total recorer or cool edit to record it as it's playing back
through your soundcard.

hi, everyone,
i apologize for the cross-posting to five lists, but since i want to say
the same thing to everyone, it makes more sense this way.
anyway, one of my ny resolutions that i think i can actually keep is to
listen to cds i have that i have not listened to in a while. world cafe
yesterday had geoff muldaur on and he did a great set. well, a year or two
ago, there was a spare copy of his previous cd, "the secret handshake," lying
around the office and i took it, and if i listened at all, it was with a
million things going on around the house. so just now, i listened again. what
a great cd. great blend of styles, messages, moods!
so, c'mon, you all know you are guilty, too. so how about adding this to
your ny resolutions...dust off those cds you forgot about, or maybe were in
the wrong mood to listen to. you never know what undiscovered treasures you
might, um, discover.
take care,
deb

two points on "stag":
first, i think that the cover art is sexy as hell.
second, i really would love a west coast stop on the "stag" tour. maybe if we all politely e-mail daemon requesting just one stop out west.....?

there is a way to convert a file to .wav. it requires a program that you

hey kind friends,
first of all, i love late bloom. secondly, i was wondering if anyone could
e-mail me (or post them here, if they haven't been posted already and i've
missed them) the lyrics. i'm pretty sure of most of it, there are just a few
lines where i'm not sure what amy's singing (but whatever she's singing her
voice is so throaty and beautiful!) does anyone know the correct lyrics or
can anyone with a knack for amy's voice decipher them?
thanks,
sarah

think that's kind of a bugger for amy herself if she ever wants to

remain @ daemon.
anyone know the person behind this page? & when they're going to put

i haven't even attempted to decipher lyrics yet, but while we're at it, is
it too ambitious to challenge someone to figure out chords?
love this song, by the way, and whole-heartedly agree with the plea for a
w. coast date, perhaps seattle's way??? can march come soon enough?

i have a feeling that it is capoed on the 1st fret. then, i hear g, c, d
with the e string held down with thumb. i could be wrong b/c i wouldn't
doubt that she might have tried other tunings with bar chords...but also i
think she likes that g chord leading into a c bar chord thing down the neck
(and vice versa), and i'm just awful at deciphering bar chords b/c i hate
them, probably b/c i can't learn them.... but, someone could have a try with
1st fret chords..... also, i think i learned a new word today: fealty.
cool. but i still don't know whether she says field team or fealty. "field
team" reminds me of the history of the dixie flag.
i just read a really good book: _half-moon scar_ anyone else get this yet?

i hear pushing the needle so far every so often. i heard watershed, and
welcome me as well. i actually did hear you and me of the 10k wars live a
few years ago (summer of 1997 maybe?). amazing live. actually,
surprisingly enough i have not heard hammer and a nail live yet. :( i know
it is played often -- just when i am not there! it the favorite song of a
good friend of mine. therefore i would love to hear it live one of these
days.
anyhow...

so, maybe this is a bad time to ask, b/c it looks as though there is alot of
fine conversation going on, but what the hell... i was wondering two things...
first: does anyone know the tabs to the verse in crazy game, starting with
"so if you're ever, believing... ill wait for you"... that part. ive got the
rest worked out but cannot get the verse.
second, any of you players and singers out there have the tabs to play it
again sam? this might very well be my favourite song of all time, and im
lacking in the musical department here. any helpers?
any input would be appreciated. btw, i couldnt get the amy download to come
thru....
and, regarding you and me of the 10,000 wars, honestly all i make out of it
is a typical mother and daughter relationship... over the course of alot of
time and growth (of course, stated in such a beautiful poetic manner, as
usual!). im not convinced it's always possible to analyze or dissect ever
ounce of a musicians work... maybe it is, maybe it's not. sometimes, for me
anyways, it's best just to interpret it for myself. it often seems to make
more sense that way, rather than what's "right or wrong... what she's really
trying to say," in other words. i have yet to read any interviews or
comments regarding this song from emily, but i would however be interested in
hearing everyone elses.

> and, regarding you and me of the 10,000 wars, honestly all i make out
> of it is a typical mother and daughter relationship...
oh, how interesting... it never even occurred to me to think of it
as anything other than a peer relationship, probably because the dynamic
that the song evokes reminds me very powerfully of the strong but
consistently-troubled i have with one of my oldest friends. i do hear
overtones of a power imbalance such as in a mother-daughter relationship,
but to me it seems more dynamic, more even-handed ("the evil of ehgo and
the vice of pride / was there ever anything else that makes us take our
different sides") whereas a mother, i think ,would be a more consistent
power figure.
i guess i took "prodigal daughter" to be figurative, a nod to the
power structure that asserts itself whenever somebody screws up and the
other person has to forgive (because it really is a necessity, in these
relationships that insist on permanence.) all the reflective language that
rounds out the chorus is a nod to that, maybe... the fact that the
positions of supplicant and forgiver get passed back and forth, with the
still water being judgment or objective rightness, and the point of the
chorus being that there is none.
what interests me most about the song, though, is the repetition
of the first line at the end of the song. it's actually my favorite thing
about the song, and also the thing that prompts me to push the back button
and listen to it again so very often. to me, the repetition is a way of
restarting the process the song narrates. it blunts and contextualizes the
"moment of peace" - it's emily's way of saying that the wars never really
are entirely behind us. i know the moment of peace feeling, and i know
that it recedes... i think the way she conveys the feeling of breakthrough
and perfect achievement backsliding into a cycle (which may or may not
include actual progress) is very deft.

if we're talking books.... :)
everybody go read the sparrow by mary doria russell. it's an
absolutely incredible treatise on faith, fate and first contact, and it
plays with time in wonderful ways. (fiction, btw)
on the other hand, don't read the virgin suicides. i just finished
it on a tip from a friend and it's possibly the worst book i've ever read
in my life, not excepting my star-crossed foray into sweet valley about
fifteen years ago. poorly balanced, poorly realized, with characters
flatly drawn... i could go on, but i won't. go read the sparow instead. :)

hey all!! happy new year and hope everyone is set for a 2001-derful year.
please allow me some breathless puns =) 'cuz i have a great present for you.
indigo girls video on cds. three to be exact, volumes 1, 2 and 3 discs.
volume 1 features the closer to fine promo from 1989, ig on david letterman,
1989, mtv news 1989, and the vh-1 interview 1990
volume 2 has a segment from cnn in 1989, late night atlanta, part 1 of 2
volume 3 finishes up the late night atlanta segment, part 2 of 2, with cold
as ice and welcome me, and includes land of canaan on the david letterman
show, october 1989.
each disc contains a read me text file from the author of the video discs,
janet doe, who has given other media presents to listpeople in the last 18
months. she has also included, on each disc, a word document with the cover
art for each disc. if you have any problems accessing these files, just let
me know.
how to get 'em, listen up -)
contact lisa if you were born in september, october, november or december
memememi@aol.com
contact neil if you were born in may, june, july or august
neil@andineil.com
contact jude if you were born in january, february, march or april
hunterj1@aol.com
if anyone in europe has the capability to make cds and wants to help tree
these discs, please let me know. if anyone else in any other section of the
world wants info on getting copies, please let me know.
each person participating in the tree will have their own directions for
sending you the discs, but here are some common pointers: please remember to
include enough postage for return of the discs to you. remember also that
postage costs more since the 6th of january...find out exactly how much it
will cost to return your discs.
these discs are playable on your computer using the windows player from
microsoft.com as discussed in the read me file. i have tried playing the
discs on a 1 gig, dell with an ancient version of this program and it *does*
work. read the read me file.
even if you still feel that you won't be able to view these discs, get them
now. perhaps someday soon you will have a computer that is compatible or
someone close to you might have one that is compatible. order now. these
discs do not degrade in quality. they are forever :)
and enjoy!!
talk to you later, if i have forgotten anything =)

i just discovered "wise women", edited by susan cahill. it's an
anthology of intellectual and spiritual writings by women, culled from
over 2000 years. some of the selections come from religious mythology,
most are essays. it's a great read for those of us who only have the
time to devour a chapter or two at a time, or who want something that
they can pick up from time to time for inspiration.

does anyone else think this song sounds very nirvana-esque, especially at
the beginning?

indigo girl amy ray takes shot at rolling stone
jan 5, 2001, 9:35 am pt
indigo girl amy ray is using her first solo album to get a few messages
across, one of which is directed at rolling stone editor and publisher jann
s. wenner.
on "lucystoners," from the forthcoming stag (allstar, dec. 7, 2000), ray
calls wenner on what she says is rolling stone's lack of adequate coverage of
the indigo girls over the years, despite the fact that nearly all of their
albums have gone gold or platinum (the magazine has never done a major
feature on the duo). the song begins with a jab at the press in general ("we
were talking ticket slump/we try to put our finger on it/and quantify the
undoing of each little step/its just a lack of press") before pointing a
finger directly at wenner.
"janny wenner, janny wenner," she sings on "lucystoners." "rolling stone's
most fearless leader/gave the boys what they deserved/but with the girls he
lost his nerve."
"[jann wenner] is a notorious symbol to a lot of women of sexism in the
industry -- that magazine is and he is -- but he's a symbol, i don't know
him," explains ray on the phone thursday (jan. 4). "it's not a personal
vendetta i have with him. i think rolling stone, rather than a tastemaker,
has been a real follower in the last five years and is willingly reflecting
sexism and i don't appreciate it."
"lucystoners" is named after followers of 19th century feminist lucy stone,
the first female in massachusetts to receive a college degree in 1847 and
organizer of one of the first national conventions on women's rights in 1850.
upon marriage, stone kept her maiden name, inspiring other women who did the
same to adopt the term "lucy stoners" as a result.
although ray says she has no personal ill will towards wenner, she does feel
rolling stone has dropped the ball on the indigo girls over the years. "i
wouldn't say i feel personally dissed by them but i would say that i feel
they have never given us our due," she says. "we have been playing together
20 years. we have a 12-year recording history with epic. we've put out seven
[studio] records, many of them have gone platinum.
"we've toured all over the world," she continues. "we've had one page in
rolling stone for our first album, a quarter-page on honor the earth, a
couple of random notes and some record reviews and that's it. that's not
enough. it's not an ego thing with me. i just think if it was a male group,
they would have paid more attention."
in all fairness to the magazine, rolling stone featured five female musical
acts on the cover in 2000, compared to that of eight male -- a respectable
ratio when taking the musical trends of the year into consideration.
representatives of rolling stone served up a solid "no comment" on ray's
lyrics.
stag, due in stores on march 6 on ray's own atlanta-based indie daemon
records, is a much more plugged-in affair than most of ray's work with the
indigo girls. many of the tunes are more in line with the ray-penned tracks
"go" from 1999's come on now social and "scooter boys" from 1997's shaming of
the sun.

i always thought it was about a mother/daughter relationship as well, but in

yeah, i see that too (especially the prodigal daughter part). but, on a
much more general level, i think it's that understanding you reach (most
often in your mid-late twenties) that your parents are human and you
understand their mistakes and the peace that comes from that ("i see my eyes
in your eyes through my eyes/still water"). and finally, you can "sweep the
ashes" of that past pain away and become friends. that's how i've always
taken it, anyway.
take care, mis amigos,

how often does rolling stone come out? i don't really pay attention to it
much anymore. but 5+8=13. and i know that one of those covers had sarah
michelle gellar on it. i love buffy, but she's not a musical act.

also, two of those covers were very risque covers of underage (at the
time) pop stars britney spears and crisitna aguilera (sp?). not exactly
shining examples of women who rock. from the looks of rolling stone's
few female covers, it appears that they're trying to compete with men's
magazines like maxim and gear. i used to read and respect rs, but in
recent years it seems they've gone the way of the stereotypical mens'
middleage crisis.

i'm sorry, but half-naked brat-ney spears? f**k that....oh she's gorgeous
(superficially speaking), but void of natural and intellectual talent when it
comes to her music and lyrics. oh you can bounce your head or your ass to
it, but does it touch your heart and make you think and want to make a
difference in the world around you? nope.....just makes me wanna whip out a
pack of bubbalicious and start chompin' cuz it ain't nothin' but bubble gum
music, bubba!

here's the part regarding ig. if anyone wants to see the whole
article, here's the url:
http://www.uniontrib.com/news/uniontrib/sun/index.html you might
have to click on the "arts" section and then on the "more arts news"
link at the bottom.
if anyone is in san diego, the article in print has a picture of them
in it. it's a common picture of them so it's not that big of a deal,
except that it surprised me to see a picture of them in a san diego
newspaper...

the folk-rock duo the indigo girls may best exemplify the thriving
side of activist rock. amy ray and emily saliers have had some chart
success during their decade-long career, but are sustained by a large
subculture rather than general adulation. (their recent career
compilation, with liner notes by the feminist susan faludi, was
called "retrospective," not "greatest hits," because the pair hasn't
had enough hits to earn the latter title.) making music that touches
both the mainstream and the underground is just the first
contradiction the duo uses to its advantage.
recording for epic, a major label, the group maintained independence
by also founding the independent daemon records, a co-op run by
artists in its home base of atlanta. extremely supportive of causes
ranging from gay and lesbian liberation to the rights of indigenous
americans, the duo nonetheless mostly records love songs and
uplifting ballads. although the indigo girls' melodious style and
sound directly connect with the women's music movement spearheaded by
such lesbian feminists as holly near in the 1970s, ray, in
particular, associates as closely with the rough-edged,
future-looking punk scene; her solo album, to be released this
spring, features members of the raw-sounding bands the butchies and
the rocka teens.
engaging seemingly opposed forces to further their agenda, the indigo
girls have survived as political artists without need for a single
galvanizing cause. unlike their countercultural forebears, ray and
saliers don't see themselves as part of a historic wave; even as they
work within the corporate music industry, they maintain a position of
relative independence.
"i see the underground -- the internet, independent media, community
radio, indie labels -- as being our lifeblood," ray said in her
keynote speech at the rockrgrl conference for women in music, last
october in seattle.
such a statement by a major-label artist plays down ideological
distinctions between the radical edge and the compromising center in
favor of a down-to-earth approach that opens up activism to everyone.
it fits a vision not oriented around an over-arching movement but
embracing an array of interests, including animal rights,
environmentalism, prison reform and the fights against sweatshop
labor and police brutality. this vision holds up neither the fringe
radical nor the political insider as a hero; it asks everyone to not
glorify his own role but simply keep involved.

hi all
i hardly consider britney spears an artist and much less one with any kind of
weight in the womyn's world. yeah, her music sales but so what ? my child is
10 years old and very much into the indigo girls . it would be nice if
magazines like rolling stones would promote womyn that are doing a very valid
work .women that are interested in seing the womyn's community growing in a
positive way and artists that can contribute with their influence in issues
that are very important to all of us like women's rights, the ecology,
etc.... britney, christina ,little kim , leave a lot to desire in terms of
important issues much less an image that is considered positive to young
women in general.

hey you guys - i'm putting the finishing touches on the calendar for
everyone, and i'm coming up against a problem. clear, flattering,
color pictures of amy and emily are hard to come by. if any of you
have good - like at least 300 dpi - scans of some color pictures that
include both girls, and would like to share them for this year's
calendar, please email them to me as an attachment. i've been trying
to download some off the net, but they're coming out kind of crappy
because i used the best of what i could find last year, and i don't
want to duplicate any of those. i'm also trying to go all color. so,
if you can help me out, please do. i need 7 more photos, and i'd like
to finish this at least in the next 10 days or so. otherwise, i'm just
omitting january. jan 2001 was in last year's calendar anyhow. :)
let me know, thanks.

hey gang,
y&m&t10k wars. an absoulte personal favorite.
when first listening to nis i usally skipped that song. it wasn't until "back
on the bus y'all" that i realized that profound beauty of that song. and the
part where amy kicks in with "..is their ever anything else that makes us
take our different sides?" that is the best 8 seconds on that cd.
but here it goes, my break down of the song.
"you and me and the 10,000 wars. dividing life into fractions of pleasures
and chores"
this line is about how life isn't all fun and games. their is work to be
done. those are the fractions 1/2 work and 1/2 play.
"a bed to be made and a bed to lie in, a hand in th edarker side and our
sights set on zion"
zion being the heavenly city she is talking about our eternal quest toward
the after life. we fraction our life into play and work toward our eternal
goals
"the heart of a skeptic and the mind of a child."
a beautiful line. the skeptic, one who doesn't beleive any thing and the
child who belives anything you tell him (tooth fairy, santa etc) her mind is
skeptical but deep down, her heart wants to beleive it all
"put my life in a box and let my imagination run wild. pour the cement for my
feet"
this is about her having boundries in her life but in her mind she is with
out boundries, but then she remindes us again, that cement is poured for our
feet keeping us exactly where we are
"the heart and the mind on a parrell course, never the two shall meet"
this is a repeat of the line about the heart of a skeptic. our hearts say,
"go for it" our minds, afraid of getting hurt, say "no way!" never the two
shall meet.
"and oh, the disatified with the sattified. everybody loves a melodrama, and
the scandel of a lie."
this is a very true line. it's all about those who havent' tasted success
hating those who had, feeling that the successful are just lucky, give no
credit to their hard work. so we dig deep for the skeletons of those who we
hold in regard just to knock them down, that's the scandel we love.
"still you held your arms open for the prodigal daughter. i see your eyes in
my eyes through my eyes, still water"
the word prodigal is one who is wastfull (or genourous, depending on the
context) so emily is greatfull that even though she is prodigal, and full of
skeletons, she is still accepted into open arms looking into tear filled eyes
reflection her own image.
"try making one and one make one. twist the shapes into everything comes
undone"
i have no idea what she is talking about here. i see or sence that one person
is never really only affecting that persons life, somone else is always
involved.
"watch the wizard behind the curtian. the larger thean life and the power of
seeming certian."
this is such a great line. the wizard who seemes larger then life that you
are so sure can't be beat is just a 4' foot tall green guy who is more afraid
of you then you are them. strange how easy it is to be wrong when you are so
certian.
"the evil ego and the vice of pride, is their ever anything else that makes
us take our different sides?"
love this line too. it's so true. the evil ego and the vice of pride is our
own inability to change our minds to what we have once professed is true. but
even if we feel that what we are saying is wrong the vice of pride keeps us
from changing our side of the argurment!
"i wanted everything to feed me. about as full as i got was of myself and the
upper echoalons of medicority."
what i hear here is wanting to be absorbed by or do the absorbing of the
world. she gets full of herself and the upper protion of the middle ground.
(shouldn't she set her sights higher?)
"after the battle and we're still around. everything once up in the air has
settled down. sweep the ashes, let the silence find us. a monment of peace is
worth every war behind us."
here she is talking about later in life, after the trial is over, all the
dust setteles, and the lessons have been learned, enjoy the lull, embrace the
silence becuase after all is said and done.. a moment of peace is worth all
the fighting we had to go through to have it.
"you and me and the 10,000 wars"
thanks emily.
