hey y'all,

i have a number of tapes that i no longer listen to.  rather than tape over
the shows or try to sell the tapes at a garage sale (!), i would like to

proliferation of cd-r's, there might not even be an interest in these things,
but i thought i would offer them anyway.  is sase plus $1 to offset the cost
of the tape a fair deal?  seems so to me.

anyway, if anyone is interested in seeing my whole list, let me know and i
will forward it to you.  here is a partial list of tapes from the late 80's

hey guys & gals,

well, i can't seem to get decent enough pics of the girls to make a hard
copy calendar.  sorry, they just look really crappy.  i will plan on doing
one next year.  that way i will have all year to find great quality pics.
if anyone has any that they took themselves and would like to see in next
years calendar, let me know.  sorry to disappoint anyone who was planning on
getting one.  if i would have started on it back in oct or nov maybe it
would have worked out better.  also, if you have any links to high
resolution pics, please forward them on to me.  i appreciate it.

thanks

here, once again, are the calendar instructions.  check it out!
download it!  it's very cool - and i worked long and hard on it.  and
not to be a whiny baby (but i am one), but after all those requests in
december, i put a great deal of effort and hours (and days actually)
into doing this thing, and not a single person has commented about it.
please.... make me happy.... make me feel like i didn't waste two whole
weekends and several hours more putting this together... print the
calendar.... use it... see the cool photos that you've never seen....
realize when you wake up in the morning that on that very day, your
favorite album was released several years ago.  the calendar is filled
with all kinds of ig date-sensitive trivia.  it even has little cool
icons for the holidays.  it's very easy to download and print, the
notes make it seem way harder than it is, i just wanted to write very
thorough instructions.  don't be intimidated.  it's a fun thing.  okay
everyone.... now off you go to the i-drive to download!

i came across (on napster) the leonard nimoy version of love of the common
people as well.... whoa.   and to make it worse, it was part of a whole
album!  i don't know how nimoy escaped the kind of attention william
shatner received for his covers. they're nearly as interesting :)

i tried to figure out the answer to neil's question. the all-music guide
lists over 50 versions of love of the common people, but i didn't get any
further toward an answer.  i would have aimed for the everly brothers as
inspiration for a harmony version of the song, but neil has heard this
already and apparently it isn't it.  there is another possible version
listed by a band called "the brothers four", the album is 1970. their style
is possibly right in that they did folk rock with vocal harmony, and they
were popular enough in the late 50's/early 60's that they could possibly
have landed in one of the girls' parents' record collections. i haven't
heard this version though.

is it possible that the girls heard the paul young version in college and
then did their own unique arrangement? can anyone think of covers they have
done that are big departures from the originals?

on some "early" recording, i seem to recall emily's saying that they learned
this song from a nun.  i want to say i heard this on reverse 1 live but that
may not be right.  some other bootleg from the late 80s/early 90s perhaps.

emily actually makes this comment on "live at toad's place," a
full show that was recorded in december 1990 (and a bootleg well worth
owning - the songs are good, and the stage chatter is hilarious.) i don't
know any better than anybody else, but i'd always assumed that the nun in
question was a teacher or a religious adviser at college or something.
somebody else may know more than i, though....

<<is it possible that the girls heard the paul young version in college and
then did their own unique arrangement?>>

yup. but it's a completely different feel. it's sort of a hybrid version, i
guess.

along similar lines, it would seem that the indigo girls and james taylor
both learnt 'water is wide' from the same recording. but which one - there
are millions!!

<<can anyone think of covers they have done that are big departures from the
originals?>>

it's funny you should mention that. i've just put together a nifty 2cd set
of the original (or definitive) recordings of the indigo girls'
officially-released cover versions. if you see what i mean. at the moment i
have a composite of many versions of 'love of the common people' and the
james taylor version of 'water is wide', just 'cos.

we were just listening to it today as we cruised the mean streets of media,
pennsylvania. the cover versions aren't really huge departures - perhaps the
biggest one is romeo and juliet. but the igs make their cover versions
tighter - probably partly because they have to deal with the
syllable-precision that their harmonies require. but on 'down by the river'
there's just more of a groove on the indigo girls version that's absent on
neil young's original...

other than that, it's just occasional deviations from the norm. they did a
couple of verses of "tangled up in blue" in a blues style, the start of "it
won't take long" a capella. even the songs they did completely a capella
("song of peace (finlandia)" and "american tune") or the
originally-acoustic-but-now-multi-layered ("letter to eve") aren't that
different structurally from the originals.

when might you hear this compilation? well i'm not sure. i'm wrestling with
the fact that although most of these songs are commercially available, they
will _never_ be put together in this form officially. and wondering whether
it might serve as a catalyst for further investigation. similarly, i could
also put together a set of the ig's guest appearances... thoughts please.

one final question. was "wild wild party at the loquat tree" written for
them specially or did someone else do it first? (and who? where? when?)

hi all. i lurk here and occassionally surface when i need help coming up with
questions for pending interviews. i write for sonicnet.com and mtv.com and
will be interviewing amy about stag next week. i am a huge ig fan, but i
always find it helpful to ask other fans what they want to know.

i did this when cons was released and you guys and the folks over at the
newsgroup came up with great questions. as a thank you, i posted the outtakes
-- the stuff i didnt have room for in the story -- after the interview ran.
people seemed to like that.

so, i am asking again. please email me with questions you'd ask amy about
stag if you could get her ear for 30-45 minutes. i'll post the story when it
runs, and the stuff that doesnt make it into the story as a thank you.

extras...

speaking of bumperstickers... i was checking out www.evolvefish.com which has
a vast array of cool shit, including darwin fishes, celebrate diversity
stickers and such... and they have some new stickers like "darwin loves you",
"hail to the thief, george w bush" and my personal favorite... "god was my

content-transfer-encoding: 8bit

i meant to respond to this yesterday, but neil asked if we had any opinions
on the "original indigo" compilation that he was creating, and i guess whether something like this should be made available...

first of all, from a black-and-white standpoint, technically i suppose that
it's not really "legal" to do so.  but to be honest, nobody on this list is
going to be buying 30 or 40 individual cds to get the original versions of
these songs (if we wanted it, we know we'd just go get 'em on napster).  so by putting out this compilation, you're not really stopping people from making purchases they would have otherwise made.

another nice, karma-ish (i made up that word) way to look at it is: who are
you distributing it to?  you're distributing it to a bunch of indigo girls
fans who most likely own everything legal and readily available that ig have
put out (studio releases, live albums).  as a group, i think it's safe to say that we've never taken money away from ig (or the causes they support) by participating in any of your previous boot offers.  when we trade, we never do it for money (i love how many people on this list start off their posts with "i am not looking to make a profit"), and i think we generally spread good cheer all-around.  we're an honest group of people, not really looking to rip anybody off.

(anybody wanna hold hands and join me in "we are the world?")

so i think that you should definitely make it available to people.  i don't
think that by doing so, you're stopping anybody from going out and buying that clash album that they have always wanted to get just so they could hear the original version of "clampdown."

i forgot to mention, but http://www.indigirl.com/order.html has links
to pictures of the shirt design, front and back. for those who weren't
around when these were made, the logo is for the "melbourne wrecking
crew". the babydoll tees have a small purple logo on front. the regular
style tees have a larger logo on back, and a small black logo on front.
the shirts are all heather gray. anyhow, check out
http://www.indigirl.com/order.html for the images, prices, etc.

i second that emotion!  these are great shirts and
everybody here should have their own!!!  don't forget
to check the link out to see the pictures of the
t-shirts:  http://www.indigirl.com/order.html

plus you can pay for it on-line instead of writing a

if you don't have a list t-shirt, than what are you
going to wear to your next ig list-meet?!?!  and no,
your old swamp ophelia off-red shirt is not gonna cut
it.  ;-)

i'm looking for suggestions for books about commitment ceremonies.
"alternative wedding" books will do as long as they aren't too
overbearing that you can't extrapolate their advice to a non-wedding
ceremony. this is for myself & my male so, altho' gay & lesbian books
will be fine (we're both bi, so it's not as if we wouldn't want a
queer-friendly ceremony anyway).

i've seen lists of these types of books, but i've no idea which are
any good, & so i'm asking that if anyone has recommendations, please
e-mail them to me privately (pixiepixie@postmark.net). thanks so much!

i just discovered that you can pre-order the lilith fair dvd at
www.indigogirlsdirect.com (forgive me if this has been posted already...).
the release date is 2/6/01.
my question is, for all of us who are dvd-less and plan to stay that way (i
for one still like video tapes!), does anyone know if this video will make
it out on vhs format?
i'm only on the news-only list so if you have an answer, a personal reply
would be greatly appreciated!

thanks to everyone who has sent questions for my interview with amy. i wanted
to tell you guys i listened to a review copy of stag today all the way
through, and you all are in for a treat when this is released. it rocks! many
of the songs are 100 percent better in their produced form than the mp3 stuff
that has been floating around. it really, really rocks. very good stuff, and
so different than amy's indigo stuff, even the more electric indigo stuff.

anyway, i am resending my original plea for questions. please send whatever
you think of between now and next tuesday.

thanks for your help.

original posting:

hi all. i lurk here and occassionally surface when i need help coming up with
questions for pending interviews. i write for sonicnet.com and mtv.com and
will be interviewing amy about stag next week. i am a huge ig fan, but i
always find it helpful to ask other fans what they want to know.

i did this when cons was released and you guys and the folks over at the
newsgroup came up with great questions. as a thank you, i posted the outtakes
-- the stuff i didnt have room for in the story -- after the interview ran.
people seemed to like that.

so, i am asking again. please email me with questions you'd ask amy about
stag if you could get her ear for 30 minutes. i'll post the story when it
runs, and the stuff that doesnt make it into the story as a thank you.

today at work (i work at a bookstore) i was browsing through the magazines.
i noticed that the words "indigo girls" were on the cover of girlfriends
magazine.  i don't normally read girlfriends, but hey, anything that says
"indigo girls" is worth checking out.

i have not read the article yet, but there is a nice picture.  :-)  i'll read
it later tonight.  but i just wanted to give you a heads up that they
received some press coverage this month.

rock on!

<<does anyone know if this video will make it out on vhs format?>>

it's out on vhs at the same time.

contrary to previous reports, it looks like there's one or two tracks on
here that weren't on the ppv special (and vice versa).

go here: www.couponsanddeals.com for nifty barnes and noble and bigstar
money off coupons.

oh, and kids, don't forget, if you're in the philadelphia area you have a
rare-as-anything chance to see one of the indigo girls' contemporaries,
caroline aiken, in an intimate, perhaps even sensual, concert experience.
caroline wrore white house blues, which the igs often played live, and the
igs guest on a few of her recordings too. what more reason do you need?

here's the deal,

we just got a brand new scanner.  of course i'm not exactly "good with the
scanner" yet, but practice never hurts.  i will attempt to scan in the
girlfriends magazine article.  of course i will not post it to the list
because it would take up a lot of space.  after i scan it, i will send out an
e-mail asking anyone who is interested in reading it to e-mail me.  then i
will attempt to (i may have to use another account because aol is not exactly
attachment friendly) send it to you.

i will not have time to do this before tomorrow (sunday), though.  :-)

sounds good?  :-)

hey, folks,
apologies for the multiple post, but i have finally decided to start a
list for fans of laurie lewis, a singer-songwriter/fiddle player based in the
bay area in california.
rather than calling her a bluegrass artist, i prefer to think of her as a
great singer-songwriter who happens to ply her trade in the bluegrass genre.
she writes about relationships, social issues and all kinds of great stuff. i
happened across her a few years ago at the delaware valley bluegrass festival
in woodstown, nj, and was blown away. great music, great lyrics, great
playing! her following is much greater out west than here on the east coast,
but i try to catch her every time she's around philadelphia. i envy those who
get to see her often. and i was glad to hear her on prairie home companion a
couple weeks ago. yay!
anyone who is interested in joining my group, feel free to head to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/laurielewisfans
thanks!

yes, i have a great cd of the chicago hte show.  anyone have any trades for
other year 2000 shows?  or, if you are in my geo area, i'll trade for an
upcoming copy of amy's show at the 9:30 club.  i won't be in town for that
one.

will also be at sxsw in austin, tx, which will be march 14 -18.  i'm just now
starting to block off vacations....can't decide.  this is a clue to jason and
di if y'all are listening.
