i am trying to track down the source of a show that i just received on cd.
(thanks tamera!)
it's an entirely acoustic show, which leads me to believe it was quite a few
years ago.
the setlist is as follows:
secure yourself
world falls
hammer and a nail
love's recovery
pushing the needle too far
crazy game
no way to treat a friend
southland in the springtime
watershed
ballad of squeaky fromme
history of us
land of canaan
falling down
tried to be true
1,2,3
you and me of the 10,000 wars
kid fears
prince of darkness
welcome me
left me a fool
closer to fine
it is very similar to the following show that i found on lifeblood.net:
june 29, 1991 -- the greek theater - los angeles, california
secure yourself
world falls
hammer and a nail
love's recovery
pushing the needle too far
crazy game
no way to treat a friend
southland in the springtime
center stage *
watershed
the ballad of squeaky fromme
the girl with the weight of the world in her hands *
land of canaan
summertime *
tried to be true
1 2 3
you and me of the 10,000 wars
kid fears
prince of darkness
welcome me
left me a fool
closer to fine
american tune *
except for the tunes marked with a *.
any help tracking this show down would be most helpful. i believe they are
talking about colorado (the show was labled as 9/10/2000 - red rocks, but i
cannot find any reference to this show.
thanks in advance for any help.

hey y'all,
yahoo posts a transcript of all their celebrity chats
on their site. give them a few days. i think you
have to be a yahoo user to view them, but i'm sure
some generous yahoo user will be dying to share when
they get the transcript up. try this link:
http://chat.yahoo.com/c/events/transcripts/music.html
i don't know if that link will work again since like i
said i think you have to be registered at yahoo to get
there, but there's a link to the transcripts page on
the yahoo chat front page.

i was recently at rollingstone.com and noticed an
indigo girls advertising box in the corner of
my computer, so i clicked and i found an order
form with the following text attached.
i think this is interesting in light of the comments
amy makes about rolling stone publisher jann
wenner on her upcoming solo album:
the indigo girls are proud to announce that their track "point hope f.o.i.a." is available exclusively via secure download. the song is available through
participating online retailers for $3.60, with proceeds being donated to benefit the honor the earth foundation. more information about the download is available at indigogirlsonline.com/honortheearth.
the indigo girls also want to offer rollingstone.com users a chance to win a guitar signed by amy and emily. enter below and good luck.
grand prize (1): one epiphone guitar autographed by amy and emily
runners-up (10): each winner will receive the cd, indigo girls: a retrospective, a 16-track career overview including two newly recorded songs, "leaving" and
"devotion."

i've got retrospective playing at the moment. as i'm listening i'm
realizing how my experience of their music has changed over the years
(started as a fan in 89).
when you put an album in for the first time there are always a few
songs that you just fall in love with immediately -- even beyond the
tracks they pick for singles. if its a good album as you play it
again and again you increasingly notice the rest of the songs -- they
grow on you. here's the thing -- before sots 90% of the stuff that
were my first loves were written by em (ghost, ctf) while the songs
that really grew on me were amy's (tmf, reunion, center stage). but
on sots and beyond that completely reversed -- i loved sys instantly
but get out the map needed some time. and its seemed to stay that
way -- most notably in the latest recorded stuff where devotion was a
direct emotional reaction, it took me a while to hear and appreciate
the harmonies and undercurrents in leaving.
have other people felt the same way? what about new listeners --
when you go back and listen to the catalog before you became a fan do
you sense a similar shift?
just curious,
chris

hmmm.. i dunno - it had a different (thayt isnt bad)
vibe last year and it was a little strange. they
sectioned off a prime area for "vip's" right by the
soundboard, and the tone of nff was far less "let's
make sure were are there at 4 am, it was my first nff
not seeing them there (and it was a blast, the
sidestage alone was awesome. dar, mary chapin
carpenter, shawn colvin, and natalie merchant was

maybe they'll do falcon ridge, i want to go anyway -
this would be even cooler for a first time.

hi everybody...
i'm hoping someone on the list can help me out with this one...i've been trying to find a cute little lesbian bar somewhere in new york city, possibly with live music (hate dance clubs, though...acoustic would be nice). i'm basically looking for a cozy place to hang out, have a few beers and maybe play some pool.
there's no place that that at all here in philly but hopefully some of you are from the new york area and can help me out. i'd really appreciate it.
thanks!
maike.

personally, i liked the laid back atmosphere of newport last year. dont
get me wrong, i love seeing ig there. but their absence made for a more
relaxed setting. the vip section, well that was odd, but it was also
newport creamery's first year there. who knows if, especially if ig
return, that section will also return? the same people who produced ig
at prior newports also produced last year's, and probably will again.
only the sponsor changed. so i would assume that if ig returned, the
producers would plan accordingly.

this would be less likely, imo. falcon ridge is not the sort of set up
that would be able to easily handle the rush of ig mania. though, they
did take extra security steps when ani was there in 1999. that changes
the tenor of things pretty dramatically there. i would indeed be
pleasantly surprised if ig did play falcon ridge, but my guess is that
newport would be more likely. selfishly, i almost hope ig *dont* play
falcon ridge. having seen how ig fans are at newport, not always being
patient through acts prior to ig, i would hate to see that happen at
frff which is a unique listening environment. that's just me and my
generalizations, though :-)

tonight i went to my local independent record store and as usual, i went to
the ig section. there, to my surprise, were several copies of stag!!! they
also had it at the "listening station". i couldn't believe my eyes!. so,
guess what i bought?
this is a store that is supposed to have the vinyl promo and an instore
appearance in april. they confirmed the instore but didn't know anything
about the vinyl.

it ?>>
there's been talk of two songs - hence the confusion...
wild horses - written by mick and keith from the stones (but originally
released by the flying burrito brothers, trivia fans!)
high horse - written by emily saliers and released on original copies of
'strange fire'.

i would have to agree with amy...falcon ridge was so laid back and awesome
last summer - i'm not sure i would want them to get any bigger names that
might change the atmosphere, including ig...

open letter to elton john
an open letter to elton john
regarding grammy appearance with eminem
dear sir elton,
by agreeing to appear on stage as back-up singer
to eminem at the grammys, you are spitting on the
grave of matthew shepard, and every other hate-crime
murder victim. it is an insult to every lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgendered (lgbt) person and every woman who has suffered violence.
the grammys rightly came under fire for nominating eminem's marshall
mathers lp as record of the year. they knew what they were doing when
they nominated
him - promoting a viciously misogynistic, homophobic man who calls
women "bitches" and wishes lesbians,
gays and transgendered people were dead.
it also doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out at least one
reason why eminem and/or the grammys
chose you to back him up at their feb. 21st event.
they chose a prominent gay man as window-dressing to cover themselves
from the charge that they're
promoting anti-gay hate. this is a familiar game in
american politics - choose a representative of an oppressed group to
deflect criticism from hateful policies or rhetoric, as when president
bush (the first) nominated clarence thomas to the supreme court.
you justify your appearance as supporting eminem's right to 'free
speech'.
how would you have felt about open lgbt people if we had played "back
up singer" to the hate campaign which attempted to "out" you in the
late 1970s?
would you have been there defending this quisling role in the name of
"free speech"? we doubt it. any who participated in that hate
campaign against you did so out of choice or cowardice, and they were
not bound by any lofty first amendment proscription to support the
hate campaign, any more than you are now obliged to support eminem.
the honorable thing for you to do would be to break your agreement
with grammys, the networks and/or eminem, actively assisting in the
political
marginalization of this homophobe, much as "dr." laura schlessinger
successfully has been publicly labeled as a bigot and thus is a much
less dangerous person than she was a year ago.
hate speech encourages discrimination and brutality, and you are under
no moral obligation to personally support it. eminem's speech is not
"free" to those of us and/or our families who have been brutalized,
beaten, murdered, and raped. it may be easy to be gay when one is
knighted "sir" and has the funds to cocoon oneself in a gay-friendly
world. but this is hardly
the experience for most gays, especially young ones,
for whom eminem's message promoting death can have a particularly
devastating impact, whether in form of physical assaults by their
non-gay peers or increased suicides.
we don't care how popular he is. if you do this, despite your prior
advocacy, activism and
philanthropy, we will consider you a collaborator in
our war against injustice. do you really want to draw a line in the
sand between you, and the community that has supported you?
are you prepared to continue to allow yourself to be used as a token
in the service of anti-gay hate? your choice is clear: resign from
your commitment to appear with eminem at the grammys, or go down in
history as a gay uncle tom who foolishly allowed himself to be used as
a tool against "his own" people.

<open letter to ej snipped>
just had to throw in my opinion about the grammy's and that open letter
written by some grammy protester. i just think that a scathing letter such
as the one posted here does more harm than good. "performing at the
grammy's is like spitting on matthew shepherd's grave"--this melodrama is
more insulting than eminem's lyrics. as if elton john is going to read
this letter and suddenly say--oh, ok i won't perform with him. i mean
there's a way to get a point across and there's a way to just piss people
off and be nasty.
i don't necessarily agree that ej should have agreed to the performance
without demanding some kind of open apology to those who eminem has
insulted. and i certainly don't agree with any of eminem's "ideas on
life." however, ej explained his reasoning. he said he is not about
building walls but tearing them down and that if he felt eminem was truly a
homophobe he would have never agreed. agree or disagree with his reasoning
but he has a right to do as he pleases. to vilify elton john as suddenly
turning his back on the gay community is, in my opinion, nonsense. i think
the protesters of eminem are only going to draw even more attention to his
nasty lyrics. this isn't the president of the united states here or a
supreme court hearing. it's a dumb, ignorant, rapper who will be in
oblivion with his buddy vanilla ice soon enough. so chill out and pick on
real enemies-not elton john. my $.05 thank you--greg

very true, but that means we all have the right to express our
displeasure as we please. elton john has a long, and largely poor, track
record on gay issues. he was extremely late in coming to the cause,
specifically in coming out, but also has picked and chosen his fights
carefully, so as not to terribly disrupt the cash flow. remember, he did the
matthew shepard concert in wyoming, but refused to get on board the movment
that opposed the death penalty for shepard's killers. he also refused to use
the stage that night as a bully pulpit of sorts to push for hate-crimes
protection in wyoming.
not to diminish the millions he has raised for aids, but he also did that
when it was a "safe" cause to be a part of. given ej's lousy history, i think
his primary motive is not tearing down walls. there is an old saying that
there is no such thing as bad publicity. i think ej's motives are purely
selfish; who else besides eminem and ej have been talked about so much in
these grammys?
sorry, ej's lost my respect once more.

hey all,
here's a post that is actually igc, to make up for my last one. so, i was wondering. i've never actually had the privilege or courage to attend or want to attend an in-store. i'm kind of curious as to what's the exact set-up? i'm familiar with the idea, but i wanted to know specifically what will happen. here's the general idea i have: amy's at a table signing stuff and fans wait in line and hand her stuff to sign. am i right so far? so, my questions are: are pictures allowed? is that a place by place thing? how much time do you "spend" with amy? 5 seconds, as long as it takes her to sign your whatever, or, like, could you stretch it to 13 seconds by rambling on about how much you love amy and think she's hot... not that i would do that, of course. is it a rushed kind of thing? is it a pretty impersonal kind of thing? what's "okay" for her to sign? only ig music stuff? and, will she talk in general to the people gathered, before or after? make any royal proclamations? (ha! ha!) is there a set amount of time she will be there? like a half hour? is there any chance she'll have her guitar and give a little performance? (i'm thinking that's probably a no.) or are these in-stores going to have some music, too? okay, i think i've exhausted my list of questions. who knew there could be that much mysterious detail to these things. just gotta know, though. thanks for the help. and, don't think i'm an idiot for not knowing or wanting to know, i just want to be prepared. this is going to be very nerve-wracking for me, and it's still almost two months away! :) okay, enough obsessing for today. :)

hey yall
ok, so i was rummaging through some old tapes i have and this one tape that
someone made me has a couple of songs on it from a band called isoe -
now, i have tried to find out info about this band (which has been pretty
hard, considering all the resources on teh net these days) and all i have
been able to come up with is that they are a local band from nj, they put an
album out in like 96 and they are fronted by a girl named kate evans. if
anybody has their cd or knows where i could a copy it would be greatly
appreciated...

ok, so i'm referring to amy in my answers, but it holds just as true for any
artist signing. like i'm some kind of vetran or something. (i've succeeded
in maybe three of these in my life, all non-ig).
<<amy's at a table signing stuff and fans wait in line and hand her stuff to
sign. am i right so far?>>
yup.
<<are pictures allowed?>>
usually.
<<how much time do you "spend" with amy?>>
as much as you can get away with. if you engage her in interesting
conversation it's longer than if you just shyly shove something in front of
her to sign. the less people there are, the more likely you'll get a chance
to pose for a photo with her.
<<is it a rushed kind of thing?>>
mostly, depending on the turnout, but not rushed enough that you can't say a
few words.
<<is it a pretty impersonal kind of thing?>>
yes. unless you catch her attention with something other than 'i like your
record'.
<<what's "okay" for her to sign?>>
anything that won't get you arrested.
<<only ig music stuff?>>
her solo stuff, posters, guitars, buttocks, (but see above caution).
but don't take your entire ig collection. two or three things is polite (you
could probably get away with more). if you truly have an armful, go back to
the end of the line for more!
sometimes stores have restrictions on the number of items, sometimes
(rarely, and i've only seen that with books) you have to buy (or have bought
them) from that particular store. also with one book signing (and this
wasn't for me) you had to get to the end of the (very short) line if you
wanted it personalized(!)
<<and, will she talk in general to the people gathered, before or after?
make any royal proclamations?>>
probably not unless...
<<is there any chance she'll have her guitar and give a little
performance?>>
depends on whether it's an in-store performance, an in-store signing, or
both :o)
<<(ha! ha!) is there a set amount of time she will be there? like a half
hour?>>
half hour to an hour. there's only so many times you can sign your name
without getting carpal tunnel.
<<and, don't think i'm an idiot for not knowing or wanting to know>>
you're not an idiot.
<<i just want to be prepared.>>
arrive early-ish, bring friends and chocolate, have fun. share chocolate.
don't feed the animals.

i found a link with a review of this groups cd at the following location
http://www.cdreviews.com/reviews/cdr024.html
there's also a reference to this group on this page
http://www.georgegraham.com/best96c.html
hope this helps a little - i found these links by doing a search through a program
called copernic that searches a dozen search engines at the same time.

hey yall
ok, so i was rummaging through some old tapes i have and this
one tape that
someone made me has a couple of songs on it from a band called
isoe -
now, i have tried to find out info about this band (which has
been pretty
hard, considering all the resources on teh net these days) and
all i have
been able to come up with is that they are a local band from nj,
they put an
album out in like 96 and they are fronted by a girl named kate
evans. if
anybody has their cd or knows where i could a copy it would be
greatly
appreciated...

i made one for myself and i just love the recording of them with joan baez
covering "don't think twice" (it's alright) and the one they did with the
tantrums, a cover of the violent femmes "blister in the sun"
both are really great!

i found this and thought it was a good site to buy ig promo stuff for those so inclined. i don't know if their prices are comprable to ebay tho.
and who knows? they may have amy stuff up soon, too, for those who wanted the promo for stag, for example, and couldn't get it.

hi all -
i've been listening to the 3rd cd from ella baila sola (she dances alone),
which was released last week. ever since i heard their first cd in 97, i have
been hooked. they are like the spanish version of the indigo girls. ebs is
made up of two very beautiful women, marta (blond) y marilia (brunette), from
spain, each of whom writes her own songs and plays her own guitar. best of
all, their music is centered around their harmonies (surprise, one has a
higher, lighter voice, the other a more raw, distinct one). they even
typically write their songs individually and alternate between each other's
songs on the cd. all this starting to sound familiar? anyway, i highly
recommend checking them out if you're into spanish lyrics or just dig cool
music. i still maintain the 1st cd is the best, but i'm partial since it
brings back memories of when i was living in spain. :) anyone else out there
a fan or at least know of their music??
toodles,
megan

di,
i'd say if you're looking for the perfect songs to turn someone on to the
girls, stick with the older, heart-wrenching, harmonious acoustical stuff.
that's where all girl lovers i've ever known have been born, myself included.
once you get the basics down, the newer, electrical stuff follows. the songs
i typically put on cds for people who don't really know them that well are
hammer and a nail, strange fire, closer to fine (i'd rather not, but, hey,
it's a staple), power of two, language or the kiss, get out the map, ghost,
mystery, watershed, galileo, joking, reunion, love will come to you... i know
those are mostly emily songs but for some reason i really didn't like amy
songs that much at first, then grew to adore them! there's just something
about emily's lyrics that drew me in at first... on the newer cds, it's
exactly the opposite; i love the amy songs and don't care as much for the
emily ones... don't stone me :) anyway, that was way longer than you probably
wanted.
happy cd making :)

okay, so the west coast dates have been released, but when i called south by southwest regarding the austin show, i was told tickets won't be sold individually, that you have to buy a pass for the entire weekend!
the woman i spoke to told me that after everyone who has a wristband gets in on march 17, if there is still room left, people will be let in. if? um, i don't think i want to drive from dallas and then not be able to get in!
does anyone have any further info??

hey gang -
in case you didn't see, the official ig site is now listing the west
coast dates for amy - including 4/27 and 4/28 in sf!!!! and tickets are
on sale online from slim's, the venue: http://www.slims-sf.com/
it's actually a "virtual guestlist" which is pretty cool...
and at $10 a ticket, a bargain.
can't wait!!!
love,
amy

okay, here's all the information i have for everyone.
first off, ticket on-sale date: there isn't one yet. tickets go on
sale on wednesdays, so it wasn't last week and it wasn't this week.
it hasn't been announced yet but i promise i'll let everyone know as
soon as i find out everything.
amy is playing april 6 in nyc at the bowery ballroom (not the bowery
bar). the bowery ballroom is located on 6 delancy street. their
phone number is (212) 533-2111. however, this is just recorded
information.
when tickets go on sale, they will be available in two ways:
1) via ticketweb- http://www.ticketweb.com
2) at the mercury lounge box office (which is another club but sells
the tickets for mercury and bowery), which is (212) 260-4700, or in
person at 217 e. houston st. they are open from 12 pm- 7 pm.
hope this helps. now i know you guys are all going to buy tickets
before i get a chance and i'll be locked out. :-)

i haven't bought california yet but i am going too. i can vouch for her
other tapes and cds....
good stuff! i am listening to thumbprint in my car and i love truth takes
time and million years. i heard her play at one of igs concerts and she was
good. i am no music critic but i enjoy her voice. it is different in a good
way imho. and i like her lyrics.
also, i have a question for the list. on the song, long way down, who is
singing back up with kristen?
peace2night,
paula

subject: nashville show on april 14
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; format=flowed
hi, this is for anybody going to the nashville amy ray show:
i haven't rechecked the posted dates but i called the venue in nashville,
12th and porter, to see if they had amy ray scheduled. susan, a nice voice
on the phone :), told me that tickets go on sale for the music act the same
day. and it was still to soon to tell if amy ray is playing and definitely
scheduled for april 14. the music acts are known for sure a week in advance.
12th and porter is a restaurant on one side and small music venue on the
other side from what i can tell. i plan on calling the first week in april
to find out. and if memory serves me correctly she will be at tower records
that same day in nashville. she said the doors for the music side usually
open up around 5:30pm but the act doesn't go on until around 8:30pm. she
said something about being able to reserve a table but to call back closer
to the time of the concert.
sounds good to me. hope it happens.
peace2night,
paula
