well, i'm not sure if my experience will help you or
not, but i've been to a book signing by dan quayle
before...(i'm not saying i advocated any of his
policies or anything, he was just in town and my dad
liked him so i was talked into going with my dad to
the signing...)  anyway, dan was just sitting at a
table and there was a line about 2 city blocks long.
it did take a couple hours to get to the front of the
line, if i remember correctly.  however, i'm sure
there won't be as many people there for amy ray, and
i'm sure it won't take near as long.  when you got up
to the table, dan said hello, signed your copy of his
book, shook your hand, and posed for a pic real quick
if you had a camera, and then moved on to the next
person.  it wasn't real exciting, but at least you
could get an autograph and a pic.  i figure with amy,
if there's not many people, you might even get to talk
for a minute or two.
take care,
sharon

there's a small picture of her in the current issue as she was a keynote
speaker at the rockrgrl music festival in seattle last year.

btw, ... the festival was awesome and they are going to do it again in
2002.

this in itself is a sad, sad commentary on the state of america, isn't
it?  but, you know, what can you expect from people who thrive on
watching backstabbers (figuratively speaking), and pig-killers
(literally speaking).

12th & porter is an excellent cozy venue, with a balcony i dig. when i
worked for the evinrudes in nashville they had a few shows there. it quickly
became one of my favorite spots to hear live music (and jj's of course!). i
remember one of the bartenders dressed like a pirate...an entertaining
place. anyway, i'm in oregon now so i'll have to be content with catching
amy at the crystal ballroom. i just wanted to give my two cents on the
quality of the 12th & porter experience. i wish i could go!

i concur about 12th and porter. that's where the daemon 10 year show was held
last summer and it really is a nice, cozy venue. i had been there several
times to eat, but never for an event. i called about 2 weeks before the
daemon gig and reserved a table for dinner and the show. we had dinner in the
main dining room (the food is great, too, by the way) and then before the
show started, they moved us to our reserved table right on the front row. amy
stood right beside us for a lot of the other performances, so i was glowing!

i agree it's sad how many people (including my dad)

the internet?

hey folks,

here's the review that ryan mentioned
(http://musicblitz.com/master.cfm?action=displaysong&songid=1332)

-sherlyn

---begin article---
indigo girl amy ray goes solo here and though she's sans longtime
partner emily saliers, she "won't be a pawn," as "late bloom"'s
lyrics so pointedly state. instead, she craftily maintains the
pop standards that attracted fans to her band in the first place:
tough girl stance, accessible melodies, and hook-oriented song
structure. ray's not rewriting the rock 'n' roll rule books here
and there's not much new to discover in this fairly formulaic
pop-rocker. it's basically watered-down melissa etheridge, but
kudos to the arranger, who toys with the musical dynamics enough
to lend subtle sonic hues to an otherwise bland songscape. the
fuzzy lead guitar sounds vaguely dated and strangely amateurish,
resulting in a track that seems more akin to the stage of a local
college bar than the halls of a major record company.

mel,

i'm still laughing at that! and listening to late bloom!

hkf's,

i'm jumping in here but the tag of pop isn't that evil is it?

here may be  a thread.....

if the girls (or even one of them for that matter) had a hit single , i mean
big hit. like the billboard top 10 would look like ;

1. britney spears - "some song someone else wrote"
2. n'sync -  "a song they have no idea where it came from"
3. indigo girls - "some absolutly awesome inspirering peice of poetry and
music"
4. aerosmith - "old men and hard rock"
etc

would that really be a bad thing? as much as i love the "unknown" aspect of
being a fan, that whole underground-ish thing with out the radio play and
all.... just for once i'd like everyone to be buzzing about the indigo girls.
i'd love to not have to explain the whole they aren't a couple and no they
don't only have one song and bla, bla, bla

so i guess that's the question i'm posing...

would anyone concider that a bad thing to have the indigo girls concidered to
have a big "pop" hit?

you know, i find that singling out or labeling an artist(s) on the basis of
a certain characteristic (age) as offensive as labeling an artist by their
sexuality or gender  - i.e. "the lesbian folk duo, the indigo girls" or
"lesbian rocker, melissa etheridge" or "female songwriter, joni mitchell,"
and so on.  it's totally irrelevant.  so why do it?

i agree.....oh by the way ig are not a folk duo. folk-rock, style
practically invented by bob dylan and paul simon..much more so rock
oriented.

tired of ig getting pegged  as a folk duo all the time

hi-
totally nigc (but maybe i'll encode a show and throw
it online for help...)

i have an interview for a web devwelopment job and the
interviewer wants design examples. now i can do both
print or cd, but is there any standard portfolio
procedures.

the job is html, design, photoshop (the would like
dreamweaver, but i never see the inherent goodness of
this program) and flash (which i have *no* knowledge
of)

is there a good program that may help me show this all
easier on a cd, (like a cd menu, etc)

email me off list, and thanks in advance!

i am looking for a song i heard once.  it was so impressive that i remember
the words.  i can't imagine what cd it is on.  i have looked and looked for
anything close to the words in the titles but i couldn't find anything.
maybe someone here can help.

some of the words are:

"don't you write it down,
remember this in your head.
don't take a picture,
remember this in your heart.
don't leave a message,
talk to me face to face."

any ideas?

thanks

hey all,
i apologize if this already has been posted

here's another review (albeit brief) of stag:

http://www.yap.com.au/channels/musicnews/article/2412.html

indigo gal amy ray goes solo

if you're looking for the classic indigo girl sound, don't count on ray's
solo project. it's a side of her you don't usually get to see...

don't fret, the indigo girls are not breaking up, but amy ray will be going
it alone when she puts out her first solo album in 2001. and if you think
it'll be all folk-like with pop currents a la indigo girls, you'll be way
off the mark.
ray's album will be called stag and it will be released on the 6th of march,
through ray's daemon records. no doubt, this creative outlet will allow ray
to explore her musical tendencies that don't come out through the ig
collaborations. expect 10 tracks generally heavy on the indie punk-rock,
people. this ain't no indigo girls album. (though we're pretty grateful that
we can also look forward to more of those in the future.)

amy ray may be be going solo on this upcoming album, but she definitely
won't be going it alone. you can count on the talent of joan jett, josephine
wiggs (the breeders), kate schellenbach (luscious jackson), danielle howle
(daemon records), and rock*a*teens (daemon records) help ray's songs rock
even harder. and ray's backing band for this project are punk-band, the
butchies, hailing from north carolina. amy ray and the butchies will bring
their album on the road, starting a tour in late march 2001.

click where it says "amy ray goes west" on the main page.
this is what you'll see:

okay, so we're doing this little retail promotion for "stag".
and it goes like this.
the following stores will have the limited edition "stag" 7" vinyl.
one side has a live song. the other side has
a song that did not make it on the album.
we're gonna try real hard to make sure all the stores have
the 7" on the street date, if they don't, ask them about it.
so....tell your friends, especially the ones that live in one of these
cities if you don't! i bet they will hook you up.

that you all aren't observant, it's just that it took me a while to

hey guys!

i know everyone is counting the days.... i had a few questions about the
echo lounge. has anyone been there before? how large a venue is it? what time
does it start? do you think we might actually get a chance to meet amy at a
place like this? ;) also...... the biggest questions, do you think the
tickets will sell out? i'm a student without my own credit card, so i'm going
to have to find someone to order the tickets for me online.

thanks sooo much for any help you might be able to give me. :)

happy day!!

i saw her tattoo when the ig were in chicago for the hte tour (i had
binoculars...)  i've been curious about how it looks as a whole ever since.
i just want a little peek...

incidentally, does anyone have a pic of her "hand" tattoo?  someone in the ig
website posted a close-up of that tattoo a while back (maybe last summer?)
anyway, if anyone knows where i can find it, please let me know.  thanks!!!

amy's now listed as a solo artist at the excellent all music guide (http://www.allmusic.com).  here's the review.  by the way, if you buy the album at certain websites, such as www.twec.com (where i did 'cause i had a nice ol' gift certificate), this review comes up there as well.

jason

amg expert review: amy ray has a message. she always has. but as half of the indigo girls, she was a bit more measured, reserved, and polite, if you will. still, she wants to be heard and what she has to say on stag is very much worth listening to. the disclaimer that it's a return to her southern rock and punk roots might turn some folkies off, but it shouldn't. stag is punk done in the tradition of patti smith and the replacements rather than the sex pistols. it is punk in its rebellious spirit, its contagious energy, and its anti-establishment calls to action. more than that, though, it is pure amy ray - her activism and her artistry melding and achieving something remarkable. it shows the full panorama of her as a person and a musician, from political outrage to self-doubt, from hardcore guitars to mandolins. yet the consistency remains unscathed, the potency of the message unabated. "johnny rottentail" leads the march to glory. a solo mandolin and vocal race each other to the end of this "tale of one bad seed" who was hanged for a crime feeling no remorse, and the sibling who tells the story. the next cut, "laramie," is especially sobering in this era of political debate over hate crimes. with a quiet, steady urgency it pleads for an end to the hypocrisy of the rich right wing's sermons of love and deeds of hate. then there's "lucystoners"'s attack on the oppressive machismo of the music industry and its lack of support for women and gays. not subtle points she's making, and she's just three songs into this thing. you still have to get through "hey castrator," which seems to delve into a man's uncontrollable urges to rape and kill and the physical solutions that would end his torture. don't worry. just keep listening. it's all good. amid the outcries of injustice, all of these songs surely hold personal truths for ray, but a few seem to be bouts with more personal demons. "measure of me" and "lazyboy" certainly feel more intimate, both musically and lyrically. to record these tunes, ray turned to the bandired her melodic wanderlust, handpicking different groups for each song. the butchies are the most well-represented with five tracks, but 1945 and the rock-a-teens make the roster with one song each. and, the riot grrrl dream team of josephine wiggs, joan jett, and kate schellenbach throws down for "hey castrator." ray describes southern punk as "subversiveness with a smile." that's the essence of stag. bottom line: if you appreciate the heart of ray's work with the indigo girls, you will love this record. - kelly mccartney

hkf's,

how large a venue?  not very - maybe (rough guess) 250
people.  it's just a small club with the bar in the
back right and the board in the back left plus a side
room to catch a breather once in a while.  what time
does it start?  i thought it started at 8pm but this
is the only thing i saw on the echo lounge site: "all
shows 18+ unless otherwise stated -- doors @ 9:00pm
unless otherwise stated"  so maybe it's a 9:30 or 10pm
show - i can't remember where i saw that 8pm - maybe i
just guessed that numbered and put it on my calendar.
will it sell out?  yes, i think so, but not right away
since this is just the hard-core fan kind of a show
and not an ig one (imho) - the daemon 10th show didn't
sell out but it was pretty darn full there.

will you meet amy?!  well, let me see, last night over
dinner she mentioned she was going to crowd surf a few
times - my advice is to also constantly crowd surf and
meet her in your fave jesus-christ pose on the waves
of the music...  ;-) or then again it will be just
like a normal show where she'll just be up on the
stage but it's such a small place the view will be
great!  (maybe it's black tank top time... ;)

i know a lot of people have had problems with sending html mail from the new
aol 6.0. i found this "solution" on one of the other lists i'm on about how
to send plain text email from the new aol and thought i'd share. i don't use
aol so i can't be 100% positive that it works, but it sounds logical (then again
not a lot about aol sounds logical - but i'll try to hold my tongue)

diane

how to send plain text from aol v6.0:
=====================================

1. make sure your font is set to arial 10, the aol default.

2. create a message using only default arial 10 type. any
quoted text pasted in from another message must also be
in arial 10 type (no bold, other sizes or colors). note:
if you paste a message that was received in html format,
it will probably cause you to send in html.

3. hit control-a to highlight the entire message.

4. right click anywhere in the message itself: a 'popup menu'
will appear. move the cursor to "text" and another menu
will appear. move the cursor to "normal" and click on it.

5. send the message.

i just signed this very important petition to the president and
congress urging them not to allow drilling in the arctic national
wildlife refuge, our most magnificent wildlife sanctuary.  drilling would
cause great harm to this wilderness area which is one of the few truly
wild places remaining.

hey y'all-
just thought some of you might be interested in jennifer baumgardner's
feature story in the march 5 issue of the nation re: growing apathy in
(mostly) younger pro choice supporters. here's the link to the whole
article:
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20010305&s=baumgardner

the article contains a brief reference to the indigo girls concert at au
last april:
at american university, amy ray and emily saliers
(better known as the rock/folk duo the indigo girls)
and karen o'connor, a professor at au and author
of a book about the abortion struggle, joined plati
on the dais, fielding questions from a knowledgeable
crew of students. the q & a and the fundraising
concert later that night drew a sizable crowd. "the
students' association that we spoke to told me they
want to start a chapter of choice usa here," plati
said later, clearly pleased. choice usa currently
has twenty-five chapters in different stages of
   development.

hey!

a kind person posted the transcription of the amy article in the march issue
of out magazine, you know the one with the alluring picture!!  ;-)  if only
i had the actualy magazine!  anyhoo, i haven't seen it posted here yet, so
here it is:

"amy's way"

when you've gone multiplatinum as an indigo girl and run your own label, you
can play it-and say it-however you want.

amy ray responds quietly to my comment that i've been enjoying her new solo
album, in a thanks-y'all drawl so southern and polite it makes jodie foster'
s clarice starling sound like a cheeky, yankee imitator. but make no
mistake: the soft-spoken atlanta native has some serious axes to grind-
about misogyny, the mainstream music industry, the christian coalition- and
she's not afraid to grind them loudly. just check out the punk sounds on her
new album, stag, replete with snarling electric guitar riffs, her angry,
rasping vocals, and unapologetic lyrics that tell it like it is.

at 36, ray is best known for her role as one half of the multiplatinum
indigo girls (she's the one with the low voice), but to a growing slate of
indie-music artists, her more important function is a president and founder
of daemon records, which releases her very first solo album this month. over
the past eleven years the gay-owned and -operated, not-for-profit label has
promoted and developed bands that have been unable to attract the attention
of instant-profit-deafened corporate labels and that span a full spectrum of
musical styles: the southern gothic punk rock*a*teens, the folk-metal band
de soleil and the hip-hop ph balance, to name just a few.

indigo fans needn't worry, however, that an end's in store for the indigo
girls' collaborative relationship: ray promises that she and emily saliers
(she's the on with the high voice) will be back to recording their acoustic
brand of folk rock soon enough. it was just time to brave it alone. "i was
starting to write songs that didn't really fit in with a duo presence, that
tended to be more punk and rock influenced," ray explains. "they were songs
i though would work better emotionally as a single voice." but more than
that, she says, "i wanted to challenge myself; emily and i have been playing
together 20 years and it makes u stronger when we do outside projects."

if you're setting out to make a punk rock album, it can't hurt to populate
your recording sessions with other punk rock musicians. five of stag's ten
tracks feature kaia wilson, alison martlew, and melissa york of the butchies
as a backup band, and one song, "hey castrator", boasts the dyke-punk-music
dream team of joan jett, ex-luscious jackson drummer kate schellenbach, and
former breeders bassist josephine wiggs, now part of dusty trails. but quit
hunching over for protection, boys: she's being metaphorical here. in
"castrator" the female subject is merely realizing that her own lusty desire
for women is no better than the long-bemoaned male gaze, and she muses on
the prospect of just, well, lopping it off:

"i see you licking you lips
at the slope of her hips
i got disgusted with my own ownership
hey castrator- take this strong out of me"

ray explores the fluid nature of gender identity throughout stag: even the
album's title resonates with sexual ambivalence, painting a masculine image
of the female singer as she goes at it alone- musically and, she says,
emotionally. and the fact that it's ray's low, husky voice pouring forth
observations about women simply adds to the effect. in "measure of me," a
stripped down rock power ballad that drips with slow grinding guitars, she
asks

"is i the boy you need in me?
or the girl that you could be?"

later on, in the noisy punk "mtns of glory", while the singer may be
referencing the female parts alluded to in the title when she taunts her
former lover with

"i said hey baby don't you want to feel these"

she keeps coming back to the refrain of

"i'm gonna miss being the boy
i'm gonna miss being the man"

the one place ray makes a clear distinction between the sexes is in her
views on the mainstream music industry, especially rock journalism, which
she sees as "so infused with sexism still, it's amazing to me." her song
"lucystoners" takes on these issues, singling out media mogul jann wenner-
"rolling stone's most fearless leader"- as a symbol of the male corporate
powermongers who perpetuate a "boys' club mentality" in the music biz. when
i mention that wenner has a boyfriend, ray just shakes her head and sighs:
"jan's notoriously unsupportive of women. whether he's gay or not, i don't
care- it just makes it a boys' club to the purest degree."

besides a tour that kicks off at the end of the month to promote the new
album, ray's plans include gearing up to record her next indigo girls album
for epic and continuing to nurture musical talent through daemon records. "i
think if you're gay and you're honest with the world, you're doing something
just by doing that. but the next step is to promote gay artists, or artists
who project an image of tolerance," says ray, adding, "i'm not going to have
anyone on the label who's an asshole, you know."

i wouldn't have felt bad about nyc (nigc, thank god they aren't playing the
bottom line, eww, i have never been treated so rudely in my life as i was
there for billy bragg 12/30/00. both sets.)

but the bowery ballroom is a small little punk room with all sorts of history,

so, even tho i have tixs to boston and noho, and an in-store i (hopefully
pics will be allowed) , i would've loved to do nyc.
