the mtn stage setlist was short but sweet...lucystoners, mtn. of glory, laramie, a new butchies tune that will be on their new album due out next month and johnny rottentale...

in the past at the daemon showcases i've seen amy do nuevos senoritas, careless youth and devotion (but it wasn't an ig song yet...) besides what's on the cd...

counting the days until march 29th!

______________________________________

indigo girl amy ray's debut solo album, stag, released tuesday (march 13) on
her own daemon records, was slightly born of frustration. not with her
partner-in-musical-crime, emily saliers, but more so of the niche the duo had
pigeonholed themselves into over the years.

"i had started writing more prolifically in the last five years and had
started to feel frustrated because some of the songs just wouldn't work as
indigo girls songs," ray tells allstar. "and i didn't want to force it. so in
the back of my mind, i was throwing songs in this other category."

funny enough, from a musical perspective, most of the songs on stag fit in
sonically with several tunes ray has penned for the last few indigo girls cds
("scooter boys," "ozilline," "go"); lyrically, however, is a different story.
stag takes common indigo girl views and political stances and pushes the
envelope well past what the sony music machine would ever -- ahem -- allow on
a commercial release. stag features a song about the murder of matthew
shepard ("laramie"), a tune about 19th-century feminist lucy stone
("lucystoners"), and peppered references to homosexuality and feminism
throughout.

"well, they have never said to us, 'you cannot talk about homosexuality,' but
there is definitely a subliminal sort of energy that goes on at a major
label," explains ray. in addition, ray, always the more fiery-viewed of the
indigo girls, couldn't always agree with her musical partner on how far to
take the duo's personal views into the music.

"i am in a partnership with somebody who doesn't always see eye to eye on the
way we write or the frankness of lyrics, or how radical i am on something
compared to her," she says with no ill-will whatsoever. "there are songs that
i have written as a solo performer that she doesn't really want to sing in a
duo."

so stag was born, an unconventional, much more punk-spirited affair than
anything by the indigo girls. while such songs as "laramie" and "measure of
me" could fit nicely into the duo's heavier guitar mold of late, others,
including "hey castrator" and "mountains of glory," are definitely spawned
from a heavier, less conventional place.

"i wanted to do [a solo album] for a long time, and i think a lot of it was
the challenge of doing something alone when i have been in a partnership for
so long," says ray. "you fall into your same roles over and over again, and i
think it is good for me and emily -- both of us -- to branch out because i
think it keeps our duo more lively as well."

stag includes guests spots by ex-luscious jackson drummer kate shellenbach
and ex-breeder josephine wiggs ("hey castrator"); durham, n.c.-based band the
butchies and atlanta's rock*a*teens, which both serve as ray's backing bands
on various tracks throughout the record (allstar, dec. 7, 2000); and ray
mentor joan jett, also on "hey castrator."

"i remember sitting out on the track with the high school girls, talking
about 'i love rock n roll' -- how great it was," remembers ray. "[but] joan's
a babe. i love her, and she has got a heart of gold, and she is one of those
musicians that everybody sort of underestimates her musicality. she is really
amazing, and she came in, and i sang that melody to her one time, and she
just went in and did it -- i mean that is the first take." after a showcase
at the south by southwest music conference in austin, texas, on friday (march
17), ray will hit the road in support of stag (with the butchies in tow as
her support act and backing band) beginning march 29 in atlanta.

meanwhile, ray reports that the girls will record an all-acoustic album this
summer, in the same vein as much of its earlier work, if ray has her way.
"well, at least for me, my side of it is going to be totally unplugged, and i
encourage emily to do the same thing," she says. "i have been wanting to do
something like this for probably about five or six years."

indigo grrrl

amy ray lashes out with solo album

by steve morse, globe staff, 3/16/2001

electric guitars and garage-rockin' grit. fiery, neil young-like soloing. and
full-throttle vocals that lash out at homophobia, class prejudice, and ''the
stupid, secret, white-boy handshake that we'll never be part of.''

say hello to amy ray - better known as one-half of the indigo girls
- and her first solo album, ''stag,'' which just danced into record stores.
it's a side of ray that has been bubbling under for a while but finally burst
out.

''i've really been wanting to make a record that made use of this side of my
musical vision - and to use the songs i've been stockpiling that didn't fit
in with the indigo girls,'' says ray, who recorded the cd with backup from
punk band the butchies, joan jett, the rock*a*teens, josephine wiggs (the
breeders), and kate schellenbach (luscious jackson).

''the whole record has an indie feel, and that's what i wanted,'' says ray,
who released it on her own daemon records, based in decatur, ga. ''i did this
to refuel and get my confidence back.''

it's no secret that the indigo girls - ray's longtime acoustic-based band
with emily saliers - are not your typical major-label act. they've done well
on epic records (part of the sony empire), but their stubborn willfulness and
even more stubborn social activism is not what corporate types feel
comfortable with.

and those corporate types would probably feel even less comfortable if they
caught up to ray's solo album. ''there's still homophobia and sexism in the
record business,'' she says. ''the more corporate you get, the more
homophobic it gets.''

as she sings in the hard-hitting song, ''lucystoners'': ''testing
1-2-3 in the marketplace/it's just a demographic-based disgrace/and a stupid,
secret, white-boy handshake that we'll never be part of.'' the song also rips
jann wenner, the publisher of rolling stone, alleging that his magazine is
guilty of sexism: ''janny wenner, janny wenner, rolling stone's most fearless
leader/gave the boys what they deserve, but with the girls he lost his
nerve.''

''i don't even know jann wenner, but i'm really using him as an example of a
much bigger issue - sexism,'' ray says. ''it covers every part of the
industry - and he was a very handy target. rolling stone has become pretty
vacuous in its music coverage.''

as for the ''lucystoners'' title, it's based on lucy stone, a
turn-of-the-century feminist who got married and kept her own name.
''feminists call themselves lucystoners,'' says ray.

ray also stands up for gay rights on the album, especially in the song
''laramie,'' which examines the killing of matthew shepard, a young gay man
in wyoming.

''the paradigm needs to shift,'' says ray. ''and i'm talking about a lack of
acceptance on every level, not just of gay people. i'm talking about hate in
general and blaming other people for things.''

the album is sure to stir strong emotions. it's only too bad her voice isn't
mixed higher, because it's sometimes lost in the muddy, garage-band sound.
there are nonprotest songs as well, such as the appalachian-sounding ''johnny
rottentail'' and the soul-searching ''black heart today.''

as for the indigos, look for them to play the newport folk festival again in
august (as an acoustic duo this time). they won't have a new record, though,
until next year.

ray will hit the road, backed by the butchies, for a tour coming to lilli's
on april 7. the butchies and opener tammy hart will also do their own sets.

''i won't be doing any indigo girls songs, but i will be dragging my own amps
around and doing my own tech-ing,'' says ray. ''it's good to get back in
touch with those things.''

yup

and according to the boston globe - it seems nff is
also bringing the ig back!!!!

but also!! music midtown is actually broadcasting a tv
special (dylan, the wall flowers and a bunch of killer
bands are going to be there , why am i going to
seattle that weekend 8-p) on turner south, i got the
info from i think sonicnet or one of the music wires
that feeds to yahoo...

i dunno if ig will be b'cast, but they were pointing
to a father son duet (bob and jakob dylan) as a
highlight.

i think it is extremely funny everyone forgot the
wallflowers 1992 debut - i mean - i saw them open for
another unknown band at the time who didnt even sell
out the show - 10000 maniacs...

this is one that i'm sure none of us would ever have come up with,
primarily because we probably all first listened to stag rather
purposefully on a decent sound system and the lyric is pretty clear, and
also because, well, i can't imagine getting this one wrong in this
particular way, but here goes:

last night i played stag in my lab while a bunch of us were working. keep
in mind we use a lousy boombox and we have a lot of background noise from
lab equipment. during "black heart today", where the lyric goes "take this
meanness out of me", a couple of my labmates ran over to my bench and said,
"oh my god, is she saying, "take this _penis_ out of me"??"

oy vey.

susan,
you wrote about a misheard _penis_ lyric. after i recovered from laughing,
forgive me for doing so, but i did.

i sat here saying meanness and penis with my wonderful southern accent. i
can clearly hear how on a song your lab partners heard penis. i being a
southerner can say mean'ess and not pronounce that extra n. lol

what more can be said. lol

loving my southern talk,

it off my hands. i don't want to make a profit off of this extra cd in

penny for evenness lol). i will ship it to you free of shipping and handling
charges ( as long as it is usa, overseas gets kinda expensive, no offense).
that is it. i know many of you already own it so this is a shot in the dark.
send me the cash or money order and i send it in the mail. first reply,

hi y'all --

i sent this to the ig guitarists list, but thought some people here might be

noodling around last night and i think the intro chords to laramie are amy's
favourites: em for two measures, then g and d.  and i think the d is a d/f#,
e.g.:
2x023x

. . . emphasizing the bass strings.

i finally got my copy today! hurrah!!! i ran (quite literally) to my cd
player and sat, listening eagerly. i tried hard to give it a fair listen. i
have a horrible predilection for anything indigo. (i bet a lot of us are
guilty of that :-) ) however, from the start i loved this album. i had heard
some of these songs live and its great to hear them taken shape on a record.
the song that strikes me most is laramie. the whole song is so passionate
and dark...its incredibly touching and genuine. and yes, perhaps (as one
review says) some of the lyrics like "ounce of prevention and the weight of
the law" are prosy but its honest...that's what strikes me about the whole
record. its brutally honest. this is amy singing what she believes not for
any audience, or to prove she can make a solo record...this is just amy
singing out what is inside of her. the result is a deeply personal and
beautiful album. i'm thankful to be able to listen.

just my .02,
sarah

at risk of beig flamed , i  feel a need to make a statement about the
situation over at pacifica radio network, particularly (but not limited
to wbai in new york city.)

to make a long story very short....pacifica was founded fifty years ago
as alternative voice in the ews media. it has fallen into the hands of a
few people on the board of directors who want to make it corporate,
which would mean that it is no longer run by the people for the people.

wbai is a pacifica station, in what is now called the chrismas coup,
pacifica board took-over the station, fired  the manager, and installed
a new one. this new one, utrice leid is responsible for firing, and
banning stafff, censorring their shows, installing a gag order on all
who are involved at wbai.

if you listen to pacifica please, this could be your station if it
hasn't been already, please get involved, there are a number of ways to
do so. you could contact  www.savepacifica.org,
www.freepacifica.org,  if you would like to find out how you could
contact station manager utrice leid, contact me, and i give it to you,
her office needs to be flooded with messages from
those who benefit from wbai programming.

if you listen to so much as one show that is from the wbai studio (like
democracy now! for example) you are a wbai listener you do not have
tolive in new york city.

in the spirit of amy and emily,

barb.

girls' club a-list
by lisa needham

stag
• amy ray
• daemon records

now, i would never say anything to disparage the indigo girls as a team
effort. first, i think its against some kind of lesbian creed, and second,
i've always had such a soft spot for their passionate, edgy, folky thing.
however, as a team, the last record by the indigo girls left me a little cold
and dry. so, i welcomed the solo projects of both ladies.

emily showed up on the vonda shepard record. it was, ummm...nothing to be
ashamed of. (okay, i'm being polite--i actually found that record unbearable.
but if you like that sort of thing....)

amy ray, on the other hand...she got joan muthafuckin' jett on her solo
record. in fact, ray may have created one of the coolest postpunk (whatever
that means) records ever. with guests like the butchies, the rock*a*teens,
josephine wiggs, and the aforementioned mighty mighty ms. jett, the erstwhile
indigo's record is all that. it's a veritable lesbian superstar extravaganza.

simply put, ray does it all. there's a traditional appalachian murder ballad
complete with mandolin ("johnny rottentail"); a genderfuck butch anthem
extraordinaire ("mountains of glory"); and the mother of all cool songs,
"hey, castrator," with wiggs, jett, and kate schellenbach. "castrator" is a
dark, muddy piece of work worthy of wiggs's own breeders. it sounds utterly
unlike an indigo girls song, and is utterly irresistible.

oh, and lest i forget: the butchies lend some supremely off-key fun to
"lucystoners," which may be the cleverest song ever, solely for working in
references to rolling stone editor jann wenner's ongoing lame treatment of
female musicians.

not many records during the last 12 months rendered me speechless. there were
some highlights, but nothing that left me with the inarticulate joy this
record inspired. its an homage to everyone from bluegrass songwriters to punk
power trios like ray's hero, hsker d. all in all, an amazing, unbeatable,
inspiring record.

hey all,

i fell down laughing yesterday when, several hours after i read the list
post about the infamous misheard lyrics, my partner, who is not on the
list, walked in when i had _stag_ playing and said, "why is amy saying 'get
this penis out of me?'"  yikes! thank god for the on-line lyrics!

i had the cd several days before i got the lyrics from the daemon site and
i was singing "hate coalition" for "hey coalition" on "laramie."  i was so
impressed with they "hate coalition" line, too, 'cause it's so apt.  i've
been thinking i might suggest the change to amy when i see her in concert.
lol

somehow i think that when it's your parent doing it, it doesnt quite fall
under the same definition of bootlegging as much as perhaps a home movie :-)

just my take on it.

i have already had a volunteer step up to help burn
this cd for me, but i want to thank all the people who volunteered to help out.

recently, i tried to convince a skeptical friend
that ig fans are the "new dead heads," you know
the new fans that have built and maintained an
almost fanatical following around the music.

he listened, but i don't think he quite got it. i
get it, i get it all the time. i love my fellow (pardon
that expression lol) ig fans and i love this board!

people often ask me why i do stuff like send
people magazines with ig material and help out with
other items. i always quote amy's "jonas and ezekial":

when i was young
my people taught me well
give back what you take
or you'll go to hell

anyway, now that i have a cd burner volunteer, let's
not let that person feel lonely! step up and email
me if you want the amy ray ep. now is the time!!

i found this article on the billboard web site!

amy ray goes 'stag' across the u.s.

indigo girl amy ray has
announced an 18-city tour in
support of her debut solo album,
"stag." the tour, with indie-punk
outfit the butchies acting as ray's
backing band, kicks off with a
sold-out show march 29 in ray's
hometown of atlanta, and wraps up
with two april dates in san francisco. the butchies
will play an opening set each night.

"stag," released on daemon records, a nonprofit
independent that ray has run out of her decatur, ga.,
home for the past decade, features the butchies as the
backing band on half the tracks. the rock-a-teens,
joan jett, luscious jackson's kate schellenbach, and
the breeders' josephine wiggs also guest on the
punk-flavored album.

"getting these songs -- which run pretty left of indigo
girls -- off my chest was such a tremendous relief,"
ray told billboard recently. "last year, i found myself
writing more than ever. those songs needed a home.
now that i've made that happen, i feel a sense of relief
and accomplishment. i also find myself feeling
energized about making music again as an indigo girl."

here are amy ray and the butchies' tour dates:

march 29: atlanta (echo lounge)
april 1: orlando (supper club)
april 3: chapel, hill, n.c. (cat's cradle)
april 5: washington, d.c. (9:30 club)
april 6: new york (bowery ballroom)
april 7: cambridge, mass. (lilli's)
april 8: northampton, mass. (pearl street)
april 10: columbus, ohio (little brothers)
april 11: ann arbor, mich. (blind pig)
april 12: chicago (metro)
april 13: louisville (headliners)
april 14: nashville (12th & porter)
april 23: seattle (showbox)
april 24: portland, ore. (crystal ballroom)
april 25: eugene, ore. (wow hall)
april 27-28: san francisco (slim's)

i always seem to get the magazines that put out the
print content before they update their site so here is
a verbatim blurb (not really review) about stag that
appears in the april/may issue of ms. magazine.

ms. april/may 2001 pg. 85

quicktakes
amy ray
stag
daemon records
it's not surprising that stag, the debut solo album by
amy ray of the indigo girls, is potentially political.
the lyrics are bursting with frustration about
everything from love to a music industry that's "a
stupid, secret whiteboy handshake that we'll never be
a part of " but what might take you aback is how much
it rocks. ray's folk-rock heart is still there , of
course, but there's a definite raucous element layered
in, thanks in part to backing by punk-rock musicans
like joan jett and the butchies.
(wow! i just realized that this is the first thing on
stag that hasn't quoted the janny wenner lyric!)
ps: has anyone seen anything on stag in the advocate?
i've been advidly scanning the issues but so far no
soap....i would think that there would be some
coverage since the girls are pretty big icons but
there's nothing in the issue i just read! (march 26)
got to catch the bus!

"amy ray of the indigo girls also found her fury at a daytime gaby & mo's set and at a later performance
at the rainbow cattle company. introducing her solo debut, "stag" (daemon records), with the butchies,
the band that joins her on most of the album, ms. ray ripped off her folkie veneer to reveal the rocker
within. sultry and tumultuous, this was the sort of revelation that makes south by southwest worthwhile."

so, tell me it's weird, that i went shopping at four different stores today,
and then, at the fifth store, where i finally given into my consumer-driven
conscience--then suddenly, as i hightail it out of the garden center of
lowe's, do i hear amy ray and emily saliers singing, "then it feels like
some sort of inspiration, to let the next life off the hook...look what i
had to overcome from my last life, i think i'll write a book!  how long...."
i just smiled really big, and just sang along...until the end of the song,
then wondering what was the title of that song? (galileo.)

but it just shows you how long i've been way out of my obsession.

one more discs for you to buy and add to your collection:
info mostly taken from the mr. lady website (www.mrlady.com)

march 20th is the release date for our new compilation "calling all kings
and queens". this list of fabulous performers speaks for itself: california
lightening, letigre, navy, amy ray, darien brahms, kiki & herb, sleater
kinney, sissies, heart beats red, pme (featuring ms. vaginal davis), the
crowns, the butchies, tracy + the plastics, origami, shelley doty,
oriflamme, v for vendetta, gretchen phillips. with cover art by ariel
schrag.

[neil's note: track 4 - amy ray / lucy stoners (live) - described by amy on
the daemon website as an out of tune acoustic version(!)]

the butchies third release, aptly enough titled 3, is scheduled for release
on april 17th. in our humble opinion it's by far their best record yet.
recorded and mixed by greg griffith and the butchies in 8 freezing cold new
york days.

the butchies are also featured performers on amy ray's new solo record,
stag, which comes out in march on her label daemon records based in
atlanta... the butchies and amy ray will be touring together this spring in
support of both 3 and stag. they will be playing a series of east coast
shows with tami hart and west coast shows with sarah dougher...

enjoy!
