i took a lot of photos of amy ray and the butchies as well as melissa
ferrick and others this past weekend at sxsw and grrlxgrrl festivals in
austin.  i wanted to share them with others.

here is the link, then you can choose any album i've created.

http://www.zing.com/member/?name=bonedoc1

you have permission to download any photos you want but if you print
them out or use them in any manner, i ask that you give me credit.  just
email me and ask.  they cannot be sold under any circumstance, so don't
let me find them on ebay.

thanks and enjoy the pictures.  please email me with any comments on
them (i do love praise).

the shows by the way were great.  i was right up in front row for both.
i've never been that close to amy before.

this is sort of spam, but not really...
my band has our first indiegrrl showcase in philly this weekend - its also
my first time bringing the band to philly-  i played the tin angel solo in
august - and the first band show since november.
my current all-star lineup includes the excellent stan harris (disappear
fear, aerial view, a million other great bands) on drums, chris sellman
(disappear fear, bang zoom, a million other great bands) on bass, and jes
welter (steelman marker, 5th business) on electric guitar.  it is a rock
band, and a rock show, even with acoustic guitars :). we will be playing
with (and hosted by) our good friends, the julia set
(http://listen.to/thejuliaset) who are a rockin' female-fronted philly band
that i would suggest anybody check out.  so without further ado:
saturday march 24 fergie's pub, 1214 sansom street. philadelphia, pa. (215)
928-8118. ages 21 and over. with the julia set. 10 pm. no cover.
satisfaction guaranteed  :)
have a great weekend

rock".  it is on friday 30th march at the nft in london.   i am definately
going.  anyone fancy it?  (i realise it's a bit far for most of you - but it
was worth a try!).

also - for all the brits, there is an amy article in april's "diva"

i don't understand why daemon still hasn't figured out that the show
is not at the bowery but at the bowery ballroom.  they're two very
different places, and i know that i've posted the correct information
not only here but on their message board as well. the only funny
thing would be is if daemon reps show up at the bowery instead...that
would actually give me a laugh.  :-)

hi kids,

for any of you who have been lucky enough to see amy and the butchies on
their dates so far, could you answer a question for me...
are the butchies playing their own stuff? a set before amy? or just with amy
and playing all her stuff?
i have a friend coming all the way from sf to see this show with me, but she
(and i admit, i) will be a much happier camper if the butchies play even an
abbreviated set of their own stuff along with amy.

thanks for any insight you can share

hey,

at sxsw in austin last weekend amy played first with the butchies backing
her up.  the setlist included songs from stag (laramie is my new favorite
song) and an absolutely amazing cover of refugee by tom petty.  the butchies
closed the show with a set of their own stuff.  it was an incredible show
that also included melissa ferrick. she was worth the price of admission by
herself.  i hope this helps.

hkf's

first i'm saying thanks for all the responces to the secure yourself
question.

i had asked what that song was about, and got taught that she wrote it after
her cat had died.

one person did say it was her dog (and by the back cover of stag, that maybe
true).

i also heard amy say that she wrote "dead mans hill" about an experiance
where a cat was tossed into a bonfire.

so we may have a speical dead cat to great song ratio issue here....

anyway, the thing is that, the origin of the song is one thing, i was hoping
to get some input as to the songs meaning. what is going on during the story.
that's my favorite thing to do whith their lyrics.

if anyone cares to know... this is what i hear her talking about;

in a song the writer must take on a character. most of the time, the writer
is either a person. everyone once in a while someone takes a step and, to use
a harry potter term and animangus them selves.

the best example is when the rolling stones took on a first person of the
devil. i still get freeked when i hear that song!

that was a bold character to be. but in secure yourself i think amy plays the
most couragous, beautiful and creative character.

in this song amy is a gaurdian angle comming to earth to bring a soul she had
been watching to heaven.

"in the ink of an eye i saw you bleed. through the thunder i could hear you
scream,
solid to the air i breath, open-eyed and fast asleep"

here amy is singing about waking up to the sounds of the soul crying out to
her. the word ink, if i remember correctly, is an instant. she is seeing a
flash and hears the scream off the death that the air is so heavy so have
trouble breathing and is woken.

"falling softly as the rain; no footsteps ringing in your ears. ragged down
worn to the skin. warrior raging have no fear"

falling softly as the rain is amy's angelic decent to earth. there are no
footsteps, she is floating. she see's the body and it's ragged down from the
pains of life and worn to the skin she comforts the angry raging warrior and
tells him to have no fear. telling him everything is giong to be ok now.

"secure yourself to hearven. hold on tight the night has come. fasten up your
earthly burdens. you have just begun"

she tells him, to hold on, were going to heaven, you have died (the night has
come) leave behind the worries of eath, you're new life has just begun

"kneeling down with broken prayers, hearts and bones from days of youth.
restless with an angel's wing, i did a grave to bruy you"

from this point on in the song i get the chills. this is such a miraculus
moment in the entire history of songwritting.
in this verse the angel amy is kneeling down and saying the final prayers for
the man. she talks about the broken hearts and broken bones of his youth and
cleanses the pains caused by them. then, she is "restless with an angles
wing" she digs a graves and buries the body.

"no feet to fall you need no ground. allowed to glide right through the sun.
released from circles guarded tight, now we all are chosen ones"

amy tells that no feet are needed, we ain't walking anywhere, becuase we are
going to fly through the sun. i love that, the sun being a porthole to
heaven!

she says that they are released from circles guarded tight. i love this
immage. she is burrying the body and all around her are other angles in a
circle guarding then from any harm, and at once they all together conger
power enough to thrust amy and the soul upward through the sun into heaven as
she screams "now we all are chosen ones!"

"secure yourself to hearven. hold on tight the night has come. fasten up your
earthly burdens. you have just begun"

fasten up is right! being thrusted upward to the sun by a powerfull circle of
angles! you better be wearing your seatbelt!!!!!

without question, in my mind, as bold and couragous a character any one could
ever be.

hi -

has anyone figured out the ticket purchasing strategy for the anaheim
concert? whoever emailed yesterday i *thought* said the tix were going
onsale today, but i can't find any info about it online anywhere.

also, san diego tickets go onsale via ticketmaster next sunday (7/30
and 7/31, i think)...

don't know if that's been posted or not.

i think i'm going to do the tour o california this summer... :)

music - over at the rainbow
gay acts rock out as fest plays down queer bill
                                                              printable
                                                              version
by gilbert garcia
pop music critic
austin ^w even at a music festival, in one of the most left-leaning cites
in the country, sexuality can be a touchy subject. that was the
impression left after this year^rs south by southwest music fest, a
festival which finally saw it^rs first all-gay showcase. at one
of the festival^rs many scheduled seminars, panelists bounced around the
issues of importance to gay artists and gay audiences and discussed
their place in the larger popular landscape.
the panel audience of about 10 people heard that even melissa etheridge,
by all accounts as gay and out as an artist can get, wouldn^rt confirm
what everyone knew until her success was well
established ^w fearing that knowledge of her sexuality would affect her
career. the same went for
kd lang and elton john. the well-placed group of panelists (two writers,
a publicist and a record
label artists^r rep) spoke in the present tense and hinted that, even
now, successful gay artists
keep their personal lives quiet to avoid making waves.
of course, the fear of being out of the closet is also the fear of being
pigeonholed, and this is
particularly true in the music business. one audience member, an agent
for a number of rock
bands, expressed frustration at the fact that gay rock acts could never
be included in queer music events, simply because their music was not
considered ^sgay enough.^t
panelists rattled off other names ^w rufus wainwright, the magnetic
fields, the aluminum group
^w of artists whose musical tastes didn^rt fall in line with what
audiences thought of when they
thought of gay musicians. as a result, according to the panel, these
artists shunned their gay
association as well.
near the end of the afternoon, local alt-country singer miss xanna don^rt
took the floor. it was due to her efforts that, after much discussion
with sxsw staffers, a gay showcase had been put
together featuring indigo girl amy ray, raucous folkie melissa ferrick
and punk-rock power trio
the butchies. she even brought established downtown club the rainbow
cattle company on
board as a venue, hosting two non-queer nights last thursday and friday
in exchange for the gay
showcase last saturday.
it was a showcase that was long in coming, and one that miss xanna says
she had been working
on since 1997. but it was not, we were told, ^sofficially^t a gay
showcase. miss xanna had of course originally treated it as such, and
had begun publicizing the event as a queer showcase when she was asked
by festival organizers to avoid referring to the evening as a ^sgay^t
event, particularly in the mainstream media. the reason given was
predictable enough: the artists participating wanted to be known for
their music, not their sexuality. whether any showcase artist was aware
of this decision is unclear.
as far as the actual showcase went, it was a huge hit and certainly
could not have been mistaken
for anything but a gay showcase. amy ray was treated, quite simply, like
royalty. with the butchies as her backup band, ray pumped up the crowd,
opening with her anthem against sexism in the music business,
^slucystoners,^t from her new album stag.
though they were obviously exhausted from a full day of work, the
butchies tore through material
from the album 3, taking a crowd that didn^rt seem quite ready to rock by
surprise. but it was
melissa ferrick who stole the show.
accompanied only by her guitar and a drummer, ferrick gave a performance
that would have
shamed a full ensemble. gyrating to the rhythm of her six-string, she
poured her heart out to the
audience, who were reduced to a swooning and screaming crowd ^w not
unlike that at an elvis
presley show.
early show-openers lord douglas phillips and daniel link certainly got
the crowd going, and ray
and the butchies finished them off admirably. but it was ferrick^rs set
that was clearly the climax of the whole evening. she closed her set
with the raunchy moaner ^sdrive,^t before quickly launching into a medley
of indigo girls covers.
again, the audience applauded wildly, as much for ferrick as for the
realization that as far as
mainstream music goes, it was the indigo girls, one of whom was standing
just offstage, who had
gotten this ball rolling. official or not, this was an evening that
queer artists finally had their own place. if this showcase proved
anything, it^rs that the gay tent has plenty of room for all styles and
tastes, and every one of them is welcome.

greetings,

newbie to the list. long time ig  fan. huge live music fan. i apologize
if this is inapporpriate but i am on the search for live recordings of
indigo girls on cd. i do have the two live commercial releases but am
hungry for more.

is cdr trading done on this list? would anyone be interested in hooking me
up with a few choice ig shows on cd? i'd be glad to send postage along
with blanks. unfortunately i am only equipped with a standalone hhb 800
burner which prevents me from downloading and burning from the internet.

one of my particular favorite covers ever done by ig is their cover of elton
john's 'mona lisas and mad hatters.' i'd simply love to get a decent
sounding
show that contained this tune.

again, i apologize if this is inappropriate to this list. please contact me
offlist if you can help me out. thanks a million.

what does amy say the last time around in "laramie"?  she subs "lay down your
_ammunition_" for "lay down your mission" and then she also changes the next one
the last time.

it's not "hey, all you jokers" but it's "hey (something else)".  what, though?

one of my other obessions is jeopardy! (us version)
and they had a clue tonight mentioning the indigo
girls!
the catagory was radio history and it was for $100

the indigo girls tried to petion this goverment entity
into supporting small bands and small stations on the
airwaves.
not sure if that was the exact wording but i think i
got the gist of it.anyway i thought it was pretty cool
that they were on a catagory on jeopardy! now all we
need to do is get one of the girls on celebrity
jeopardy!

fyi - democracy now had an incredible interview with alice walker.  i can

hkf's,

i'm trying to figure out the format for the thursday
night amy ray show at the echo lounge and figure this
would be the best bet.  on an earlier 'format' post,
we learned that at the sxsw show amy played first (w/
the butchies) and then the butchies played a set
after.  then the echo lounge says 'doors open at 9pm
unless otherwise stated' (and i haven't seen anything
else about an earlier or later time).

that's what is known so here's my questions: if the
doors open at 9pm, would that make the start of the
show around maybe 9:30 or 10pm?  and since that would
make it a late start, is there any opener or just amy
& the butchies???  the echo lounge phone never reaches
a real person, but i probably need to try that at
night...  but thanks for any help with this!!!

i am still working on the "pretty vision" ep project.  my husband is in

etc., from the original.  we should have the remastered version out in

well, after visiting the mountain winery's website, i found out about a
little thing called the "reserve club" which basically lets people who
pay $1000 membership fee buy whatever tickets they want for whatever
show they want, ahead of the general public.

that's kinda sucky because there's virtually no chance of us
non-filthy-rich people to get really good seats for those two shows.
and the $1000 just goes to the venue, so it's not like the performers
are seeing any of that. i guess it probably helps the maintenance and
all that jazz, but still...

:(

or maybe the people that have a membership are only interested in the
more "sedate" concerts? i can hope...

just wanted to vent...

i'm so sorry to keep bringing this up, but i am so excited about thursday
night that i just can't stand it!!! by then i will have finished up a long
week of tests here at uga and will be heading down to the big a-t-l to see
one of the most amazing people in the world. hehe. so my questions... ;)

first... could somebody who's good with directions and has been to echo
lounge possibly email me privately with directions coming from 316/85-south
(athens)? the ones on the echo website confuse me. :)

secondly... when it says doors open at 9, what time are you folks who are
going gonna show up? if i wanted to have a very good place near the stage,
what time would you suggest? it's not a problem if we're under 21, is it?

and thirdly.... here in athens everything closes at 2 am. i realized today
that probably that wasn't true in a big city like atlanta.  do you have any
guesses as to what time it will end?

and lastly... i keep having these reaccuring dreams that i get to meet amy.
does anybody have any "ins" or know if there might be a chance after the show
to meet her? please let me know! :) :) :) i've never had the opportunity to
meet her, but then again i'm only 20.... but i've been a fan since 1989. ;)

thanks so much! i really appreciate any and all answers.  hope everyone has a
terrific week!

hey there.  let me help you with the directions.  take i-85 south.  then, get
on i-285 and go south (or east).  get off of i-285 at i-20 and go west on
i-20.  or if you're coming from the west side on i-20, just look for the
moreland ave (south) exit.  the exit you want will be moreland avenue.  go
south on moreland avenue from i-20.  after you cross over i-20, turn left at
the first light, there will be a big sign that says "east atlanta".  there's
also a church's chicken right there. so, turn left there.  at the first stop
sign, turn right onto flat shoals ave.  go about 400 yards, and you'll see
the artsy east atlanta strip that people talk about all the time.  look for
parking where you feel comfortable, but feel free to procede on until you
pass the main drag's 4-way stop traffic light.   the echo lounge is just
passed the traffic light, and there's a big candy cane thing somewhere around
there.  be careful where you park.  i got towed away about 2 months ago b/c i
parked in the wrong spot, and as a result, my best friend and i were riding
in a cab at 3am in east atlanta with my 2 other punkass friends.  we were all
drunk except for the d-driver.  he was so pissed off!  it's a cool part of
town, but it's very old and industrial.  my grandma grew up there and she
doesn't like to go there for various reasons, but primarily b/c she's scared
of it now.  i go there a lot lately, and it's not bad; it's just bad for
older folks who are sort of conservative in their ways, ya know?  have fun!!!

i'll be the one freaking the f%ck out!  again, y'all, be careful where you
park.  they will be very hungry for yuppie money there and if you park in the
wrong area, they'll tow you without thinking about you.  i don't know about
any of you, but i'm so excited to see ig fans crossing over into the east
atlanta area!  i hope things go well.

:)

hey everyone,

i have a co-worker/friend who just adores stag.  she's not really one for
folk music, but she loves amy, and at the same time, can't just keep playing
stag over and over again.  today she asked me what other artists she might
like since she likes stag so much.  since i'm not really familiar with
punk/bluegrass/etc do y'all have any recommendations?  i like stag a lot, but
at the same time, i'm usually more partial to folk music, so i drew a blank.

thanks in advance!

i am pleased to announce our new internet radio show! please tune in

at 2pm eastern. our show
will re-run other days/times throughout the week.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
on-the-i.com to rock out with indie chicks from gogirlsmusic.com
deal creates gogirlsmusic hour; allowing thousands of female musicians
from the esteemed music community to get internet airplay worldwide
(fairfax, va-march 27, 2001)  marshall eubanks and jim junkala,
co-founders of  on-the-i.com, a popular on-line radio station with
listeners in more than 35 countries and subsidiary of multicast
technologies, announced today that their on-line radio station is
planning on rocking out every week with the indie chicks from
gogirlsmusic.com.    the agreement provides an international platform in
the form of a radio program for thousands of female artists associated
with the esteemed music community gogirlsmusic.com has developed since
its inception in 1996. the gogirlsmusic hour is scheduled to begin
airing on on-the-i.com on march 29, 2001 at 2 p.m. eastern time.  the
weekly thursday program will feature music from the popular female
rocker roster and will include such artists as:  amy ray (of the indigo
girls), michelle malone, melissa ferrick, donna de lory and many other
independent women musicians.
"when i first read the gogirlsmusic slogan: 'cuz chicks rock!,' i knew
we had to work with them," states jim junkala, president/coo for
on-the-i.com.  "after meeting with the company's founder, madalyn sklar,
i knew we had something special. we immediately moved things forward in
anticipation of highlighting some of the world's most talented indie
female musicians. our affiliation with gogirlsmusic.com is one that is
filled with the pride of knowing that we can broadcast their music to
the world, this program should certainly provide a fabulous forum for
many female artists, particularly those who are on indie labels and need
to build a larger fan base.  this deal is a win-win-win situation for
everybody involved," junkala adds.
"our goal at gogirlsmusic.com is to promote all women in music,
especially those who are independent," says sklar. "what better way to
do that than with an international online radio show. everyone at
gogirlsmusic.com, artists included, is excited by the prospects. i think
this is going to be a great partnership with on-the-i.com, " adds sklar.
"we're thrilled to have chicks that rock on our site," laughs marshall
eubanks, ceo and chief technical officer of on-the-i.com and multicast
technologies.  "gogirlsmusic.com has developed a fantastic community of
female artists and we are proud to be associating on-the-i.com with such
a well-respected music site. this community, along with many others that
are soon to follow will make our audience grow very quickly to become
the largest broadcaster on the internet in a very short time."  adds
eubanks.
about on-the-i.com/multicast technologies:
on-the-i.com is an on-line radio station with listeners in more than 35
countries.  the company features proprietary technology developed by its
parent company, multicast technologies.  this advanced internet audio
station is the first and only commercial internet audio broadcaster
using multicast to stream cd quality audio to end-users. it
also features staggered erasure protection technology, which corrects
audio dropouts.   based, in fairfax, va, on-the-i also owns its own
media player called, the mct player
which is available as a free download at www.on-the-i.com.  the company
and its media player have been featured in such publications as:
fortune investor, wired, cnnfn, msnbc, billboard and many other
publications and websites.
multicast technologies is the parent company of on-the-i.com and is
utilizing
on-the-i.com as its "test-bed" for its multicasting technologies.
multicast technologies delivers audio and video distribution channels to
broadcasters and advertisers at rates far below the current costs of
internet broadcasting, resulting in significant cost reductions.
multicast technologies is the first multicast service provider providing
consulting and other assistance for multicast solutions in virtual
private networks, campus networks, and on the commodity internet.
about gogirlsmusic.com
gogirlsmusic.com, the oldest online community of independent women
artists, was started in 1996 to promote women in music.  it's run by
women musicians, for women musicians.  each month, you will find
features written by independent artists as well as interviews, cd
reviews and an online searchable database with over 1,000 independent
women artists/bands.  it also produces the gorigirlsmusicfest, which is
a national tour promoting independent women in music and the
gogirlsmusic hour which airs every thursday at 2 p.m. eastern on
i'd say sleater-kinney.
maybe 'come'
possibly 'the breeders'
early courtney love (?)
tribe 8 if you can stand it.
really the closest fit is sleater-kinney.
the thing about all the ones i listed, though, is that they don't have that
amazing punk/folk/apalachian (sp?) fusion that comes through and makes stag
truly unique and amazing.
he can say what he wants to say.  do i have to agree?  no.  that is my right
as well.  and to be 100% honest, i am mixed on how i would feel about the
on the pro side, having two open lesbians by his side on national tv *might*
hey all,
i'm in search of help from anyone who lives in nyc.  i found out i'll be in
ny for amy's show, tried the online site--no go, called the bowery ballroom
for tix, and the guy was, to say the least, rather unpleasant.  i offered
my credit card, i offered to overnight a money order, i offered to send
cash in the mail--he told me unless i show up on the club door step with
the money i could not get tix.  he also said that the show will definitely
be sold out before i get into town, so, to quote him, i'm "out of luck."
can any kind soul get me two tix?  i'd overnight a money order and i can
throw in one of those sots mini calender promos or a little extra cash for
the hassle.  i would *so* appreciate the kindness.  please email me
privately if you can help.
best,
lisa
