it was great - so worth subjecting myself to the stench of cigarette smoke

definitely smoke-worthy.

<<they had a few technical difficulties with alison's bass, so melissa came
out for an impromptu poetry reading (something about lesbian sex i think)>>

umm... it was "any way you want it" by journey (i guess she just read the
lyrics off cassette cover or something). i don't think that's what they
wrote it about, exactly  :)
my friends concurr.

<<then there was amy.>>

amy said something at the start about having a headache and not having
smoked a joint in awhile because she was out on tour and there's a rule that
you can't break two laws at once otherwise you get caught, and she chooses
speeding because she needs to get places fast... that was kinda funny.

<<one thing though, was anyone else disappointed that she didn't play an
encore?>>

not dissappointed, but i guess the crowd was only half-heartedly asking for
one, especially as she'd made the point of not knowing any more songs. i
guess she seemed kinda adamant that there wouldn't be one, but the crowd
didn't push it and that's ok.

i was kinda bummed that most of the crowd didn't know "ever fallen in
love..." they should teach that song in school, man.

but hey, ten bucks for that show was a bargain....

amy ray is already a star - as one-half of the indigo girls - but she just launched a solo tour with the garage-rocking butchies that sent a sold-out lilli's crowd into a frenzy. ray played with a rocking bravado (only hints of which can be seen with the indigos) that was much closer to neil young's ''rust never sleeps'' period. she was a rock rebel on ''lucystoners'' (which
jabbed at the sexism of rolling stone magazine), but also showed her enduring spiritual side in ''black heart today,'' with its refrain, ''take this meanness out of me.''

ray decried the homophobia behind the murder of wyoming's matthew shepard (''lay your ammunition down,'' she wailed), then rocked out with the butchies on covers of the buzzcocks'''ever fallen in love'' and tom petty and the heartbreakers' ''refugee.'' how many acts would do those two songs in the same set? perhaps only ray, an individualist who does as she pleases. (if you prefer her folk side, it will return when the indigo girls headline the newport folk festival in august.) and ray also took a welcome shot at the greedy, high-ticket prices of many touring groups: ''even some bands who you wouldn't think would do that, like u2.'' this woman speaks her mind.

hm. it seems to me that ig can be rather expensive too. i had to pay $50

wonder if ms ray is aware they do that. i would propose she and ig
boycott venues that take ticket master. : -)

it's is *such* a monopoly, that it just cant be done
(pearl jam tried in 96, the maine show had more out of
staters that natives because of the way the phone
networks are configured.) i mean, ticketmaster is
horrid (but doesnt mean venues that use them are...)
and if it were feasible (and for bands like fugazi it
totally is, esp. folk acts.) but the truth is is that
when you do any reasearch on the issue, money,
corporate sponship and boycotts from big promoters
screw many of the venues over. i know in maine, we
have almost lost a prime venue (state theater) like 3
times in 8 years as a result of financial issues.

(*tired from the amy shows, but they were sooooo good!)

hello all-

first off, as people have mentioned, the phily and ny gigs were incredible.
not being a big fan of punk, i was extremely impressed with the butchies.
their studio stuff doesn't do them justice at all. their music has roots in
punk but it's more than that. it's got rock influences too. they are
extremely tight live and are the perfect backing band for amy. amy totally
rocked and i'm torn about the prospect of an acoustic album because the past
ig tour and this tour have been the best imo. she (and emily) are bonified
rockers. no doubt about it.

not much else i can say about the shows that has not been said other than
amy did totally wail on the ending extended solo to laramie and she faced
the front/side for most of it in ny but faced the drummer in phily. i only
mention this as it was mentioned before. i think she's becoming more
comfortable in her playing as the tour progresses. she wailed all night.

anyway, i'm posting in regards to the in store at columbus. anybody know
where this is exactly and when it starts (5pm i think)? an address would be
cool or the name of the joint. also, didn't she just do one in boston? if
so, was she selling stag there, i left mine in ny with my brother by
accident. i want to get it signed. columbus is my last show this round and
its going to be nice to meet her finally. i hope the duo tour hits pa
somewhere, hopefully pgh.

on a personal note: in phily, the stage is only accessible by walking up
from this basement area and thru the front part of the crowd. well, before
tami hart came on, amy walked up the steps and walked right thru the crowd
to the back of the club somewhere. she brushed right past me. it was really
funny because not many people recognized her. this girl next to me didn't
know she was coming and amy said excuse me to get thru and walked by. the
girl made a comment like "boy, that sounded like amy". well, on her way
back, this girl figured it out that it was amy who walked past previously as
she was walking by again!

if any of you have doubts whether to see a show, go! you won't be
disappointed (unless you hate rock music).

thanks y'all.

dave.

anyone who can respond to this appeal for donations to this way out please

so generously - the program is in a real pinch and needs immediate support
to
continue beyond the next few weeks. please pass this message far and wide.
thanks.
vmc
- - - - - - - -
an urgent appeal from lesbian-feminist humorist kate clinton

what touches the lives of thousands, maybe millions
of lesbians and gay men every year?
read this message to find out...

dear friends:

i just finished reading a letter that really touched me.  it's from a
15-year-old gay man, in pomona, california - "brad" writes:  "... many
people
at school and home suspect i am gay.  i get the regular teases and name
calling from people, but i just ignore them.  i listen to your program every
week with my earphones on so nobody will hear me listening..."

in another letter, "linda" a 17-year-old lesbian in missouri, writes: "... i
thought i was alone and attempted suicide.  the lesbian and gay hotline in
st. louis ... recommended that i listen to your radio show. i loved it! it's
like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert!"

but the program brad and linda have been listening to is in serious
jeopardy:
"this way out" has not been able to attract sufficient underwriting to
insure
its long-term survival on the air.

a messenger of hope and pride

what prompts young people like brad and linda to write to "this way out"?
is
it because of the timely news, entertainment and information they can hear
every week?

is it the features, the poetry, the interviews with lesbian and gay leaders,
the lively and engaging production? ...or maybe the great selection of
music,
especially from "out" lesbian and gay artists - all in a highly produced,
snappy format?

that, too, but i think it is because since 1988, "this way out" has been
sending a clear and compelling message to listeners all over the world -
currently on over 125 local stations, via short wave, and online - that
lesbians and gay men everywhere are leading valuable lives, contributing to
their communities, and being admired for their accomplishments.

a "sound" investment

"this way out" has made this contribution to lesbian and gay communities
without the benefit of big corporate donations, government funding, or even
a
subscription base to pay its bills.

it has received awards from the national association of community
broadcasters, glaad, and p-flag.  it's been written about in publications
from the "los angeles times" and the "detroit free press", and the
newsletters of the national lesbian & gay journalists association and the
association of independents in radio.

even though the show is produced by a dedicated corps of volunteers, it has
some significant expenses to meet, such as satellite distribution fees,
recording supplies, postage, shipping and printing costs, and equipment
maintenance and repair.

real support is more than just $$$

i am not just asking you to write a check. i am asking you to really get
involved. here are some ideas:

* host a fund-raising party in your home, and invite your friends.
* contact the local chapters of your community's lesbian and gay groups, and
get them involved.
* spread the word: make copies of this message and email and/or postal mail
it to friends and associates, with your own brief note encouraging their
suppo
rt.
* if your local radio station is not carrying "this way out," call them and
ask them why not.
* use your imagination to come up with new ways to support "this way out" -
yard sales, benefit performances, phone bank solicitations, etc.

one friend of "this way out" hosted a birthday party and asked his guests to
write checks to "this way out," rather than bringing birthday presents -- he
raised nearly $800!

don't just ignore this message, get involved!

you won't see a postal-mailed version of this letter in your mailbox - there
will be no pledge form, no return envelope, no postal reply card.  quite
simply, those things cost money, and "this way out"'s volunteers have to put
their few precious dollars to work on the air.  they're hoping that
distributing this message online will raise enough money to keep the program
going.

so, take out your checkbook and your own envelope, and do your part!  i've
done lots of radio shows, and i've had the most responses from interviews
i've done with "this way out" - it really reaches our communities.

"this way out"'s mailing address is p.o. box 38327, los angeles, ca 90038,
and they're a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit under the name of overnight
productions (inc.).  "this way out" is always glad to hear from you - give
them a call at (818) 986-4106 if you have questions or comments, or send an
email message to twokatec@aol.com; their web site, which includes a list of
stations that carry "this way out", is at www.thiswayout.org.

show your support for tolerance and understanding, for pride and acceptance,
by committing your time, your energy, and yes, your money, to this most
worthwhile cause.

best -

kate clinton
ps - remember, without your help "this way out" may no longer be able to
reach many of the listeners who need them most - like "l.h.", who said in an
email message, "'this way out' is listened to by people on my weekly mailing
list in australia, singapore, malaysia, china, taiwan, denmark, and
germany."
.. or "neal" in los angeles, who wrote, "i can't tell you what a morale
boost your program is for me.  i look forward to it every week.  it's better
than church!"
pps - we're sure you know people we don't know - please don't forget to
forward this message to others who might be able to support "this way out".
thank you!

just a note to say that michelle malone and her band will be playing in
birmingham at the nick on thursday, may 17.  not sure of the time yet.  i
will remind all of you again.  i just wanted to pass this along for those of
you on here that may want to know.  i hope as many of you as possible can
come.  mm said she stopped playing bham because no one came to the shows.  if
we go to this show, maybe she will see how many alabama fans she has!

it has been brought to my attention that some
of you who have received the pretty vision cd
may have received incorrect back cover artwork.

on one of the versions of the cd, the last 2 tracks
appear in a different order than the cd artwork
mentions.

if this has happened to you, email me and i will
send you corrected artwork.

if you have not yet received your pretty vision
ep yet, it is on the way!!!

hi folks -

i usually don't get into these discussions, but i think it's
commendable that the girls have kept prices around $35 for most venues.
for example, the saratoga shows also have the counting crows, who are
charging upwards of $60, i think, for the same venue. it would be great
if the girls could charge less, but i've never gotten the impression
that they're rolling in the dough, and they do so much to support so
many causes i believe in... so i'm happy with my $35 ticket. :)

ticketbastard, on the other hand... the fees they charge are
rediculous. but then, doesn't the venue determine where the tickets are
sold? some bay area venues always sold through bass tickets (now
tickets.com), and others do ticketmaster. so, i don't think the girls
have much of a choice.

:) amy

striking a raw nerve
new release '3' is likely to usher more punk rock fans to the butchies' side
by r.j. grubb

indigo girl amy ray is creating quite a buzz for her new solo album, "stag."
but one of the hidden benefits of her debut and spring tour is that it also
adds to the current boon for ray's new back-up band, the butchies.

to be sure, the butchies, the north carolina-trio of unabashedly dyke punk
rockers, are enjoying a hot streak. last year, the band took home a glama
(gay/lesbian american music awards) for "best band." then their song "galaxy
is gay" hit prime time when it aired as the background music for neve
campbell's lesbian-smooch scene on "party of five." nowadays, the band just
hit the road for six weeks as the openers for ray and her back-up stage band.

with ray, the band constantly plays to sold-out shows-like the one at lilli's
when the stag tour hits somerville on april 7. the timing couldn't be better
since the band will release their third album called aptly "3" (mr. lady
records) on april 17. much fuller-sounding and more raw than the band's
previous releases, "3" is poised to usher more punk rock loving fans their
way. still, despite the run of good fortunate, the butchies say they just
hope the hit-making gears remain greased while they keep grounded.

"we're thankful. we really are," said drummer melissa york from the band's
home base in durham, n.c.

"i just want it to be where we can keep playing shows and still have it be
that our lives aren't too stressed out. i want to try to maintain that
momentum and maintain being a butchie and maintain being kaia, alison, and
melissa."

along with york, singer/guitarist kaia wilson started things off with team
dresch, one of the pacific northwest trailblazing riot grrrl bands of the
early '90s. in 1998, both teamed up with bassist alison martlew, formed the
butchies, and released their first album, "are we not femme," which unleashed
a new self-described "pumped rock" aesthetic that spoke of dyke love and
loss, genderfucks, politics, and even disco. a year later, the album
"population 1975" hit the shelves solidifying the band as a thrill-ride,
lesbian-validating punk band.

roughly around this time, ray contacted mr. lady records-the fast growing
indie label founded by wilson and her girlfriend filmmaker, photographer
tammy rae carland. ray was looking for girl bands to join her 11-year-old
indie label, daemon.

a date with mr. lady

"she loved our music," explained york. "we sent her a cd and she came to see
us. we played a daemon showcase in the fall of '98. then we just started
developing a relationship. we would email, talk on the phone, blablabla."

that blablabla eventually led to the band scoring the opening slot on the
indigo girls' "come on now social" tour in 1999.

"opening up for the indigo girls was really, really fun," remembered york.
"and how the indigo girls work things is that they invite their opening band
on stage for the encore."

after a few encores of joan jett's version of gary glitter's "do you want to
touch me," the butchies found themselves joining ray in the studio.

"i don't know how it happened, but amy said i'm doing a solo record and i'd
love for you guys to play on a couple of songs," said york. "and it just
clicked."

in a recent rolling stone interview ray explained that "the butchies
surprised me, because i thought i had them pegged. i thought they'd do really
good on "mtns of glory" and "measure of me"-those are two extremes they do
really well, the punk sort of ballad and the fast song. i didn't peg them as
a 'laramie' kind of band."

"laramie," a punkless, straight-ahead guitar rock song that centers on the
murder of matthew shepard, is a change of pace for the band. yet the butchies
wowed ray with their versatility. soon ray was "digging us and saying i would
love for you guys to be in my band," said york. the "stag" tour kicked off in
texas last month when the band played the sxsw (south by southwest) festival.
given their dual roles, the butchies found themselves playing a grueling
four-sets in one day.

"it was insanity," said york. "and you wouldn't have known it. we were damn
proud of ourselves. i swear we gave it our all."

to be sure, their fans give their all too. that is, butchies' fans tend to
toss a bra or two on stage to show their appreciation. for this tour, if the
crowd is feeling frugal with their wares, then the band devised a unique
method of audience participation. so be prepared when the butchies play the
first track off their new cd, "anything anthology"-a song that uses a subtle
cowbell at the end-because the band has unwittingly created a not-so subtle
cowbell girl.

"the first girl totally knocked our socks off, because she was banging that
cowbell like she was giving someone a smack on the ass," said york. "and the
second girl, amy called her the sleeper, because you had no idea she was
going to be as crazy as she was. but when she got on stage and we started
playing the song, she started freaking out and jumping high up into the air.
it was just insane."

'a new sound'

can't say fans ever saw that at an ig show. but, besides the cowbell novelty,
the butchies are also bringing a new sound to the "stag" tour. and for
wilson, the word is "raw."

"the new word that i would use to describe this record is raw," said wilson.
"it's more of a raw live sound for us. more of actually what we can play
live, with the exception of the three or four overdubs on solos and guitars,
but everyone has that."

plus, apart from a more organic sound, the new album is peppered with classic
rock. from led zeppelin to traffic, the band either directly references or
alludes to good ol' rock-n-roll throughout the album. helping to achieve that
new tone is wilson's recently acquired vintage gibson sg guitar. in the
tradition of pete townsend, eric clapton, and carlos santana, wilson's sg
fills the album with a new full-tilt rock sound.

"it is new," said wilson of her axe. "i bought it last spring in new york on
a whim. i wasn't looking and i just saw it. a 1971. and i said, 'i want this.
i really want this.' it's the guitar i wanted for a long time. i think it
makes me happier. i definitely play better on it."
but, don't get them wrong. on "3," there's plenty butchies-esque loud, fast
pop-catchy punk songs with good hooks that'll happily stick in your head. on
"forget your calculus," you'll be singing "what is the world to you" long
after the track ends.

yet, the band shows an adventurous side too. take "wedding disaster"-a
six-minute melodic song that crescendos with blazing guitars-and "i
hate.com"-a soft-pop song complete with claps that has york singing the lead.
then there's "junior high lament," a slow-building drum/ guitar song that
evokes a gay teenager's daily horrors as she endures taunts and beatings for
"looking like a boy."
songwriter wilson remembers that "lament" practically wrote itself while the
band was recording in brooklyn last thanksgiving. perhaps a quick rendering
shouldn't be a surprise, since gay youth issues are near and dear to the
butchies' heart.

"it's something that i think about a lot," she said. "['lament'] is partially
autobiographical, partially not. it's based on my own experiences and [that
of] others around me. junior high. god, it's hard. especially if you're a
weirdo."

apparently, being a weirdo ain't easy at any stage. especially rock and roll.

'much more gross'

"i do get nostalgic for the days that i perceive as a more excited and more
open time for me, as openly 'queer' in an openly lesbian rock band like team
dresch," said wilson. "i think that the rock climate is much more gross now."

other lesbian rockers, like ray, have coined the mood as the "lillith fair
backlash." ray explores it on her new song, "lucystoners." for wilson, it's a
disappointing step backwards.

"i wish things progressed differently," wilson said. "i've seen a lot of
backlash with people not wanting to define themselves as a lesbian band and
identity. a lot of confusion and resistance. it's not helpful to be in that
environment. people refusing to identify or align themselves with feminist or
queercore-i think that's strange and not the way i would like to see things
progress."

despite the rock resistance, be reassured that the butchies won't give up the
fight.

"we've carved out a niche for ourselves which is great and we don't
necessarily sell out shows every night. we're not quite there yet, but we're
getting there," said wilson. "we're going to keep plugging away at what we do
with the same sort of attitudes that we have now."

hi fellow ig listees,

this post announces the first-ever midwest tour of a washington,
dc-based female acoustic duo called commonbond.   if
you're a fan of ig, you'll probably be a fan of commonbond!
their original music can be described as a mix between ig and
bonnie raitt.  mary beth de pompa's and ashley miller's
musical flexibility goes even farther than that.  the genre of
their music is hard to define.....folk, blues, rock, pop, country,
and even a bit of swing.  like ig, they
combine tight harmonies and skillful guitar playing with
fun/heartfelt/socially-conscious lyrics.   these ladies are
not to miss in concert!!   commonbond is award-winning!
amongst a long list of kudos, they are 1999 lilith fair talent
search finalists.

following is a press release and midwest tour info.  please
come to check these ladies out!  you'll be thrilled you did!
be sure to check out their website www.commonbondmusic.com,
where even you can play the guitar with ease and clarity!   :)

any questions?  i'd be glad to help.  lschreihart@juno.com

the press:

the award-winning washington, dc-based acoustic duo, commonbond,
begins its first-ever midwest tour this april in columbus, oh.  while
travelling up and down the us coastlines, this indie band has racked up
an
impressive list of kudos, along with a strong and ever-growing grassroots
following in the likes of john gorka and ani difranco.

while most often compared to the indigo girls and bonnie raitt,
commonbond
has developed a unique mix of folk-pop, rock, country and blues all their
own.   trading off between lead/backup vocals and lead/rhythm guitar, the
two-girl band of ashley miller and mary beth de pompa will have you in
tears
one moment with the touching "angels dance," then rock you off your chair
with a big burst of blues in "buy me some things."  most noted for their
stage presence - and their ability to play - this singer-songwriter duo
loves
to perform and it shows.  they are dynamic on stage!  and, if you're
fortunate to catch one of their unscripted road stories - where each
finishes
the other's sentence through sobs of laughter - you'll not only be in
hysterics, you'll be endeared forever.

their humor, however, is tempered by the seriousness with which they
approach
their music.  commonbond has released three full-length cds and one
single on
their self-owned label, get bonded productions.  their third release,
"naked
soul dance," spun on radio stations in over 20 states and hit the top
charts
on several stations.  beyond rising to a radio-friendly format, "naked
soul
dance" received wide critical acclaim, winning four distinct awards in
the
songwriter association of washington's mid-atlantic song contest and folk
album of the year by the online music community, just plain folks.  the
release also helped earn the duo a wammie (the washington area equivalent
of
the grammys) nomination for best contemporary folk group and a finalist
spot
in independent distribution network's north american indie band of the
year
contest.

commonbond is currently recording their fourth release, which promises to
be
their best yet.  on the midwest tour, you're sure to get not only a
healthy
dose of what's already catapulted this band to some of the hottest stages
with some of the most acclaimed artists on the circuit today but also a
splash of what's soon to come.  don't miss this opportunity!  to hear a
byte

hello all-

well, after 9 hours in the car and little sleep, i'm back at work for the
afternoon so i thought i'd post about columbus since no one else has.

the show was pretty good but nothing compared to ny and phily. she had pa
and mic problems at the start (massive feedback) and before lucystoners and
i think it "subdued" her all night. plus it screwed up the flow of the show.
i guess after driving from boston and having the day off may do that. not
sure. it was hot as hell too. don't get me wrong, i enjoyed the show but
comparing shows, it was just ok. the pa system overall was pretty shitty
from where i was standing, which didn't help things. her vocals were buried
a bit.

the butchies rocked and seemed to be in the same mood. i don't know who runs
the venue but they are clueless. we are standing outside until 8:35pm, they
finally start letting people in and i'm 3/4 of the way back. i get to the
door and rose is on stage already. unbelievable. the ticket says 8pm show
anyway. why wait to let people in that late then have the show start before
everyone is in? poor rose, i could bearly hear her at all. there is
absolutely no respect for opening acts. tough gig.

amy's setlist didn't change, stag in song order and then the buzzcocks cover
and refugee, which still totally jam. unlike ny, the crowd was extremely
talkative all night, even during lazyboy (no pin drops here), which amy
explained is about her grandmother's lazyboy chair which she collaped and
died in. she went on to say that her family was having a hard time deciding
what to do with it and thus, she wrote the song about it. on your honor is
still my favorite live tune. this song should be on every rock radio station
in the country. i've decided that i'm going to send a copy of stag to my
local rock station, demanding they play this tune or laramie. both fit the
bill.

back to work.

i just saw jody bleyle's new band last week in los angeles. she was in team dresch as well.

jody's new band is the barbara please attack. no upcoming gigs that i know of, but if you hear of one in your area they're well worth going to.

"along with york, singer/guitarist kaia wilson started things off with team dresch, one of the pacific northwest trailblazing riot grrrl bands of the early '90s."

hi yall,
just curious if anybody knows anything about the concert in nashville?
i called 12th and porter and this lady named raven told me she *thought*
there were no tickets but just a cover of 10 bucks and  the first performer
started at 8:30pm?

anybody have any other information?
i don't want to drive to nashville clueless. i have been to the web site for
12th and porter and they confirm tickets sold day of show only with no
reservations. but, they don't post the start time.

thanks.

at the nyc show, during the butchies set, they brought a

the tour since atlanta, so they brought her up. also,
during "hey castrator", melissa york (the butchies)
played the cowbell.

hi there - just  got in from the show - it was fantastic.  i purposely
didn't purchase stag - wanted to see it all live for the first time -
amy was in a great mood - acknowledged the crowd as the "best yet" -
now, we did sing happy birthday twice, that may have had something to do
with the favourtism.  hopefully someone will give a more detailed review
- i need some sleep.
oh, we ate at seva - no amy, but great food!!

yeeehaw!
thats all i have to say.

no, i have more.

it was great, i was in the way front :)

yeah, the y loved us, i really think we made amy's b-day :)
i finally got to meet her, in fact i met just about everyone  (except mel,
cuz she was chatty when i tried and i forgot to go back)
anyway, they all loved us.  we even had huge cheers for rosie and generally
its hard to get people to care about the opener!
it seemed that amy opened her eyes more than you guys were saying...certain
songs she did keep them mostly closed but she wasnt doing bad.

set list
rose p:
polliwogs lament
olgas b day
mary lee
fell
same height (its a cheesy song she says she can maybe sell to faith hill)
orange crush
thom ii

butchies:  i don't know, my friend has it and she hasnt emailed it to me
yet.  you want it?  maybe i'll send it later....email me if you wanna see

amy ray
johnny rotten
lucy stoners
late bloom (i think this is the one where she totally messed up the first
chord- it was the cutest mess-up ever!)
measure of me (near the end they all has their eyes closed, amy thanked us
for being quiet during the sensitive song, before the song she was saying"
i'm sorry you guys are so pumped...maybe i shouldnt do this song, you need a
sing along, but....nah, i'll do it and get it out of the way")
laramie
mountains of glory
black heart
lazyboy
tami hart came out and was cute and good
hey castrator
on my honor
ever fall in love
refugee
then they were trying to leave, they had a little"meeting" and decided not
to get off stage and try and play something and amy was like v"i dont know
any more but the butchies have a cris willamson song they can play and i'll
sing and they gave her a tambourine....she tried in the middle messing
around w/ the mandolin but not enough to hear....but at the end she picked
up her guitar and they went into....
cortez the killer!!  i heard this in sound check, but i didnt expect it to
be played- like they were still learing it (esp after amy said she didnt
know any more)

then after the show i hung around a long time, met most of the performers,
someone stole amys capo and kaia, me and a few others tried to find the girl
so we could get it back but she was gone....
then we hung around for a long time outside cuz we didnt want to leave w/out
meetin amy even though we didnt want to be bothersome either.
so anyway, finally we got to, and she signed out stuff and all, and then i
went to go check on the penny i put on the railroad track and it was
smooshed really flat and then i found some magnetic poetry (incendiary) and
gave it to amy, and i said "well you mention magnetic poetry and
"incendiary" is a really good word" and she said "yeah, it is a good word"
then i went back and told chris and my friend becca the wordd and they said
"incendiary is a good word" and i said "yeah thats whay amy said" so i think
the consensus is "incendiary" is a good word.

so yeah, good stuff :

hi all-
is there anyone who
a. has digital audio boots of boston and noho?
butchies sets would be wonderful as well.

b. has a stereo audio boot of the first two songs from
amy's boston set. (johnny rottentale and lucy stoners)

i just would rather digital clean sounding recordings
be out and swapped rather than analog partial/hybrid
recordings...

for those of whom who are wondering - yes, i have
audio of both shows and appearences and such, just
wondering if digital boots exist, then i'd trade for
those and not circulate my audio tapes?

but if those dont exist - then yes - i will circulate
my audio stuff.

today - happy b-day (38) to both my sister and amy!

question:  the live version of melissa ferrick's drive with ig, tori amos,
sarah mclaughlin, etc. was that done at berkley?

also, for the past several months i have been trying to recover from a severe
crush injury to my left hand.  i have lost most of the use of my small finger
and part of the use of my ring finger.  i had thought my guitar playing days
were over, but this live drive has inspired me to try to learn it and see if
i can possibly play again.  does anyone know where i can find chords to it?

something else:  for 20 years i have played a cheaters g using my small
finger due to the fact that my fingers are sort of short (yeah, i
know--bummer).  i'm not sure i can adapt both from my injury and a
20-year-old habit.  any suggestions?

any help is appreciated.

we saw both boston area shows, and at lilli's nobody came up and played the
cowbell, but in n hampton they brought a guy up refering to him as "cowbell
girl",and after they played the song, the drummer came out to the front
mike, and said she felt bad cause their was a girl screaming to let her play
the cowbell,so they played the last verse again, and let the girl play the
bell this time.i never heard any thing said about the "sleeper",and like i
said i was at both shows.....hope that helps!!

in the article where melissa mentions that a cowbell person was a
sleeper, i think it mentioned that melissa was talking to the author
from her home in nc, which seems like whichever show that would have
been from, would have had to have occurred before the majority of the
shows on the stag tour. and in atlanta, at the echo lounge show, right
before they pulled two people up on stage to play the cowbell, melissa
was demonstrating the various techniques employed by previous cowbell
players, although i don't know if she ever actually described any of
them as 'sleepers', but given her description and impressions, it
definitely seemed like  the butchies had had several different cowbell
people even before the echo show, so perhaps the sleeper wasn't from a
terribly recent show?

argh, not him again. he sat two seats away from me at the unh show last
year and pestered my friend the whole night, then snuck into the colby gym
early, claiming he was scheduled to work security, even though he wasn't
from around there.  i'm surprised they let him within ten feet of the
performers.

yes, melissa described "the sleeper" at the echo...the one they thought
wouldn't do much who then proceeded to blow them out of the water with her
cowbell tenacity.
i talked to the girl who was the big butchies fan after that show...she said
she had seen them 8 times this year, and i was wondering--is this the fan
who has been following them? i guess so, but if anyone knows for sure...she
was so adorable on stage with them--positively giddy over it!

~megan (o:,'

ps- i thought the sleeper was female, so i don't think it's this guy.

forgive me if there have been other posts about the chicago show alreay--i
haven't checked my e-mail yet.
it was terriffic, i thought. stood in line for four hours (i was the second
person there which i didn't expect) in the freeeeezing cold wind, and ended
up dead center, right in front of amy. i'd been looking forward to seeing a
show with just amy because i always feel really guilty cause i almost never
look at emily during ig shows and i have to divide my attention and all,
however, with the butchies on stage with amy i had that whole divided
attention thing again. i didn't know whether to look at kia (i think that's
her name) who is the ultimate guitar playing rock goddess or amy who is, as
always hot as hell. funny/interesting things amy said:
about measure of me: "i went out on a date with this guy a couple of years
ago (audible gasps here form different audience members which i found
amusing) actually it was four years ago but i'm stillin love with him, in
that rock star way. anyway, i couldn't figure out if i wanted to be him or
be with him. your basic lesbian dilemna. but i wrote this song for him."
people kept yelling and singing happy birthday to her which she liked at
first and then she was like, 'okay, okay'.
someone yelled out "galileo" and she just looked toward the back of the
room and said, "oh please!"
she also said she felt like a grandmother on stage with all the younger
people but she liked the feeling.
thewn the butchies' drummer (melissa?) said amyy i love you or you're great
or something like that and amy was like, well that's good cause you've had
to look at the back of me all night and melissa said somwthing about
enjoying that and amy thought that was funny.
the set list was the usual and the shirts are very cool, i think.
i guess that's about it.

i have only seen one post on the chicago show so i thought i'd throw in some
comments.  the other post had a certain female flavor to it (amy looking
hot, female drummer looking at amy's ass all night, amy liking it, etc).  i
guess that is to be expected as there were so many more women there than men
that they changed all the upstairs men's bathrooms to women's bathrooms.  i
had to run downstairs all night long to find a men's room.  who said there's
no equality :).

anyway, there were some other oddities of the evening worth mentioning.
there were some protesters outside before the show.  i don't know all the
details other than that they were transgendered/transexuals (margaret and i
debated the difference all night) who were upset with amy or with the
butchies for playing at the infamous michigan womyn's fest.  they obviously
felt slighted as they are not allowed to go there as you must be born a
woman (at least that is my ignorant male knowledge of the fest).  so the
butchies felt inclined to at least address the protesters saying they love
trannies and all people rock blah blah.  no comment from amy that i heard.
some fans on the floor kept throwing bras and clothing at the butchies which
the drummer actually put on over her shirt.  only at an amy ray show would a
sportsbra be thrown on stage as opposed to a frilly victoria's secret
number.  i was dying.

amy did have quite a laugh when some dork yelled galileo.  bad enough to
yell an ig song but galileo.  i mean she should have yelled closer to fine.
that is the only thing  that would have been worse.  amy was as cool as she
could be about it explaining that we (the audience) definitely did not want
to hear galileo without emily and that the show was just her and those songs
are reserved for when they are together (read helllooooo-this is my solo
tour!).   it was quite amusing hearing the gasps in the crowd when amy
stated she went on a date with a guy.  maybe i have a chance with her :).
also enjoyed her heartfelt explanation of the song lazy-boy about the chair
her late grandmother sat in that she and the family became obsessed with
after she recently died.

best part of the evening was when she proclaimed the metro to be her (and
emily's) favorite club to play in.  if she has said that about all the
venues she only meant it about ours :)!!   i love the metro too.   i love
amy.  i am so glad she got this solo deal off her chest.  it was a rocking
concert.  see y'all soon....greg

well, time for my additions....

my girlfriend and i rushed over to the metro from south suburban chicago
thinking there'd be crowds at 2pm.  we ended up being about 6th or 7th in
line.

it was a horrible, windy-grimey sort of chicago day, a chill in the air and
city grit blowing into my eyes.  believe me, though, 5 hours of waiting was
worth it.

oddly enough we ended up in line next to a woman who had been in front of us
waiting at the free house of blues show last year.  also, i ended up directly
in front of someone i had briefly dated, whom i now only run into at indigo
girls (or related artists') shows.  but i guess that's also a 'basic lesbian
dillema' to quote a. ray. (:

the butchies walked right past the line...and i don't think anyone noticed
until they went inside.  then we pretty much all felt sort of embarassed
because we didn't say anything.  rose p. parked her station wagon right in
front of the venue and got out...i did say "hi rosie", big dork that i am.  (:

there were also people doing some sort of documentary and i spoke to them a
little; they didn't get our names, so if they use it i will probably be
'random lesbian #2232' or sumpin'.

at about 6:05 they let us into the venue, and we totally had no trouble
getting in, unlike the bowery show.  i ran up to the barracade in front of
the stage almost in the center and steeled myself and locked my knees in for
a long night.

rose came on around 7 and was just so totally kick ass.  she played uh, fell,
olga birthday, polliwog's lament, the one about her elementary school friend
aka "the kids all get naked when she comes to play",  the unreleased cowboy
related one which i really like, and some others.  it's funny....not to bash
the butchies, but look how hard rose can rock acoustically?  she mentioned
how rock star-ish and cool she felt to be playing in front of big amps and
having so many peddles on the floor to hit.
folks were mostly mellow through rose's set, though my gf and i tried to
cheer the loudest for her.  i did sense some sing-along though during "olga's
birthday".

the butchies then came out, and i just have to say that since i'm not big
fans of them this part of the review will be short.  the only tense part of
the night occured here.  the metro has a no moshing/slam dancing policy and
their security, stationed right in front of me was keeping an eagle eye out
looking for it.  two girls a few people behind me were starting to mosh, and
security warned them, and they continued to do it. so the security person
leaned as far as she could foward, inches away from my face, and the most
outspoken mosher leaned against me to shout in the security guard's ear.   it
was bizarre enough to be witness to the fight, much less almost be part of it
just because of extreme proximity to it.
security to girl : "you're disrespecting the band by doing this."
girl to security: "ha.  disrespecting...the butchies have played in my living
room." (voice dripping with condescendence)
and this continued into the next song, "the galaxy is gay", where melissa and
allison were trying to explain to do this wrist move, when this girl
interrupted them to ask what they thought.  you could tell that even if they
knew these girls they were peeved to have been interrupted.  i think the
moshers were expelled from the venue after that.
and about the trans protest:  the reason the people were protesting was
because besides just performing at the mwmf, the butchies have been quoted as
saying they support it's inclusive, woman (or womyn) only atmosphere.  this
kind of stuff, as a trans and queer person, affects me and interests
me....but i wasn't ready to boycott the show just yet.  besides, i saw some
of the protestors in the show.
i think that kaia saying "i love trannies" really didn't do much to help them
or to eluminate their side of things.
the butchies were _loud_ .
amy came on.  i took some pictures, i hope they come out.  the venue was
packed at this point.  as for this comment, :

<<only at an amy ray show would a sportsbra be thrown on stage as opposed to
a frilly victoria's secret number.  i was dying.>>

i have to say, i was thinking the same thing.  i thought it was a thong until
the drummer put it on.  (o:

even though i knew about the premise to the song "measure of me", i
inadvertently gasped along with others.

it was fun to hear lucystoners in a post-punk bar.  !  also to hear people
echoing "lucystoners don't need boners".

i personally think who ever called out "galileo" was joking, at least i hope
they were.

tami hart looked all of 15. i mean no disrespect.

amy looked mmm-mmm good, to quote campbells, but of course i was there for
her artistic abilities and not her looks....just like every other dyke in the
place.  (:

i got a white shirt and a pin....and the ticket...cost me all of $26 for
everything.  a bar-goon.

hey ya guys, all this talk about the metro show reminds me of how i
wish-i -wish-i wish amy would come to mpls or anywhere by the twin
cities. it could even be in wiscosin so i could go-ho...boo-whoo-hoo!
........now anyway.
i know i know i've said it before that i don't like stag, well that is
where i was when it first came out, i figured maybe sometime i might
actually be in the mood for it sometime, and then i would try it. that
moment came last night when
i was in the mood to dance, and while i was playing lucy stoners i could
picture amy doing
that on stage ....and thought,"you know this isn't too different from
what she was doing at sst in 1998. and i had a ball there!!"

so i'm a new stag fan. and boy i tell you i love her singing on lazy
boy, it clearly demonstrates what most amy fans know: she knows how to
wrap you up in sensuality. and that clearly shows on lazyboy. i like
johnny rottentale, but it really needs a guitar to support the wonderful
mandolin. it would give the song a much fuller sound.
and lucy stoners rocks!

peace
barb
