hey all,

now i've been paying attention, i think, and i just checked
the archives as well as i know how, and i can't find any
mention of this, but forgive me if it has been mentioned,
and if it really hasn't, i am sooooooo confused as to why
not?!  but, for those of you who don't know or haven't seen,
there is, what i found to be a very, very, very shocking
photo of the lovely ms. ray within the pages of the article
in which ms. amy has her shirt unbuttoned down past her
cleavage(!), obviously not wearing a bra, and her shirt is
parted so you can see not only her cleavage(!) but, also her
much-wondered-about chest tattoo (which she got on april 15th
1997, the afternoon before my 3rd ig show).  it's a very
interesting picture to say the list.  the look on amy's face is
very strange.  she's kinda staring blankly, as if to say, "i
can't believing i'm doing this for a photographer, i'll just
pretend it isn't happening and i might just get through it!"
or at least, that's what i think she might be thinking... :)

i find it utterly amazing that this hasn't been mentioned yet on
the list, which is also why i found the picture so surprising,
that i hadn't heard about it already.  i didn't actually buy the
mag tonight when i saw it, if you can believe that, because the
issue had obviously been bent/rolled and was the only copy, so
i'm waiting for a nicer copy...  i always joked about what i
would say to amy when/if i met her (not that i actually wanted
to actually meet her until only recently, and just did(!) on
tuesday!!!) i would say "hey, show me your 'new' tattoo!"  i
can't believe i actually saw it, let alone in a magazine.
although, come to think of it, it would probably be more
shocking to have amy personally flash me! ;)

i find this pose very strange.  it doesn't seem like something
amy would do as far as sexist body-revealing goes, and/or
personal comfort with being that exposed (literally!), but,
apparently the photographer used the "you know your fans are
just dying to see that tattoo" line, and it worked! :)

anyone else seen the pic/have any comments?!

btw, i'll post more about my amy meeting and experience at the
columbus show on tuesday asap, as soon as i get my act
together...  could be a few more days.  anyway...

peace, melissa

hi all,

for those interested who can't get the magazine yet (i've been looking in
stores for awhile now), it's at www.girlfriendsmag.com. the article's
there too, i think.

i too was a little bit shocked that amy would pose for such a
picture. and the look on her face is far
from seductive or anything else one might expect of someone sitting in bed
with her shirt unbuttoned. anyone else have any thoughts?

well,i don't know what kind of mag girlfriends is
but it looks more to me like she's doing nothing more than showig her
tattoo. which in this society (i the u.s. that is) would be all right if
she's a guy. but if it's a woman like amy it's shocking? i think she's
being very bold.

as for the surprize, well maybe there's a little side that likes to keep
us on our toes so that
she can protect the very open and public perspn she is being.

hey all --

i was discussing the amy pic with another list member, (who actually
hadn't seen the pic at the time... she was just going by my descrption of
it), and she guessed that maybe the expression was one of, "well, you keep
asking for it, so here it is." like, that she purposely was trying _not_ to
appear seductive. and the more i look at the picture, the more i agree that
that's what that look is about.

i totally agree here.  there's nothing shocking about this photo except
that i can't see the tattoo clearly enough. going to have to buy the stupid

oh please...if you'll excuse the analogy, a woman showing a tattoo is about
as common as snot nowadays. it's about as shocking as a man wearing an
earring.

rose p.

i have heard so many superlative reviews of rose^rs voice and performances that
i approached her set with a sense of anticipatory respect for her as a singer
and songwriter.  i mean, between amy and the ig list people gushing, i was just
about expecting the second coming. i strained to pay attention. unfortunately,
crowd noise did drown her out.

i^rm not familiar with rose^rs stuff, so i can^rt name the songs. in fact i
couldn^rt hear the words with people talking all around me.  i believe it was
the second song that was a ^svocal showcase^t sorta thing.  however, people
didn^rt shut up.  such is the life of an opening act.  she remained unfazed.
introducing one song late in the set, she said something like, ^sthis song is
kind of long, so people can chill out.^t   last or near last, rose did a suzanne
vega song that seemed unremarkable except toward the end of it, she had a
chance to show her vocal range again.

rose seemed to be fairly pleased with how it went and make pleasant comments.

the butchies

they began with a power-pop sorta instrumental.  again, i^rm not familiar with
their songs.  someone (kaia?) made a comment about the two disco silver balls
that were rotating and glittering at the top of the left and right of the
stage.  i believe the band began making an effort to improvise some sort of
disco-ish sounds, but they couldn^rt solidify anything and moved on.

the birthday girl playing the cowbell was fun.   birthday girl didn^rt whomp on
it enough, so the drummer (is her name melissa?) came and gave her some
cowbell-whompin^r lessons and birthday girl (whose name was amy i believe),
properly whomped from then on.

^sgalaxy is gay^t was a fun, crowd-participation song, with the drummer and bass
player throwing their hands up in that ^si^rm gay^t sorta way, and the crowd going
along.

i enjoyed their stuff quite a bit, and i did have high expectations out of them
as well.  they were all high energy players.  the drummer drummed with gusto
and an eccentricity i can only (for lack of drummers to compare her to) keith
moon.  she was also the joker of the group, taking a front mike several times.
at one point kaia was giving her a look like she was a nutball.

overall, they were all very smiley for several songs into their set.  i imagine
they were damn tired by the time they finished.  i^rd have to respect quite a
bit a band that would take on their own show and backing the next act all night
as well.

amy ray

amy came out and fooled with her mandolin.  i guess there was no mandolin in
her monitor at all.  i was kinda wondering if she was going to get pissed or go
into endless sound tweaking and instrument tuning mode, and was glad she
didn^rt.  amy started playing it and ran thru something vaguely familiar, also
in that appalachian vein.  not sure whose it was or if it^rs an unrecorded one
of hers.

the songs were not in album order but she did play them all.   (luckily no
requests for ig songs, but she did play on your honor after someone yelled it
out.)

with johnny rottentail, i was trying to gauge amy^rs um...frothing at the mouth
scale, for lack of a better term.  by that i mean the wild-eyed passion or
general over-the-topness we^rve all seen from time to time.  there was no
frothing/literal spitting nor burst blood vessels.

what we had was an excellent show sound-wise, no mucked up or muddled sound.
you could have heard almost every word.

at some point tami hart came out and playeld her one song, which was impressive
not only for her apparent youth.  as mentioned before, she^rs a lefthanded
guitar player.  she also played xylophone (with fluorescent green-looking
sticks [whaddya call those things anyway, they had little balls on the end of
^qem] during one of amy^rs later songs.)

i^rd say the rockinest song (and excuse me, that sounded juvenile..oh well :p)
was mtns of glory.  not sure why.  just kind captured the spirit for me of the
whole thing.  also probably because it sounded so good and clear and loud,
compared to the album.  i was so glad i went and had been looking forward to it
as some kind of historical rock event.  (i doubt you all [i^rm from ohio so it^rs
not y^rall] would disagree.)

with lazyboy, amy apparently decided to play it out of set order, saying the
next one up wasn^rt as appropriate.  maybe i missed something as to why, and i
don^rt recall the song before it.  ironically this was the only song where my
view of amy was obstructed by some vociferous, wiggly girlies tawking amongst
themselves.  which was unfortunate, because, since i^rve read posted to this
list that the song^rs about amy^rs grandmother^rs chair, and knowing she^rd
recently passed away, i wanted to pay close attention.  overall though, the
crowd was quite enthusiastic, attentive and sober.

i don^rt recall if they actually went offstage before fallen in love and refuge
or not.  i think they did very briefly.  the buzzcocks song was fun with amy
and alison jumping up and down.  not only during this song but throughout amy^rs
songs, the butchies added high-quality backing vocals.  amy was mostly backup
on one though she remained center stage.  (i think it was the buzzcocks one).

refugee was hard hitting but not trite, a good rock-n-roll cover as every show
ought to have.  they said goodnight and left the stage.  the lights were still
down and i remembered someone posted they were learning cortez, i waited for
that possibility.  very shortly after amy came out and graciously commented
that that^rs all they know, they^rre learning more.  and that was it.

banter

amy made a comment about the ^sjames bond meets [something or other] music^t the
venue had played.  there was a bit of banter in between songs.  again she made
the comment about going out with a guy about 4 years ago and not being sure if
she wanted him or wanted to be him.  she wrote the song for him.  got a couple
of thanks y^ralls from amy.  pretty smiley and with her longish hair, i was
reminded of her ^suptown lounge^t era look, despite the 10+ years between.  i
almost forgot - at the end amy said "we'll be back" with a definite-ness about
it.  (??)

obligatory fashion report

rose - a sleeveless black dress i believe

the butchies - black t-shirts and pants with red belts.  they did look a little
like devo, now that i think about it :)  for amy^rs set they had white button up
shirts with skinny black ties, and i think each had letters on the back to
spell out ^sg-a-y^t but they didn^rt model.

amy - played in levi^rs and blue butchies shirt

miscellaneous

ticket price was $10.  t-shirts cost just $12.  white or blue with ^samy ray and
the butchies^t in red and black.

this is a bit late due to lack of computer. i walked out of my parents house
and well... that's another story but anyhow. i went to see amy ray in
northampton on april 8th and i had an absolutel blast. not only because i was
seeing amy ray but because i was with a terrific group of people. i went down
with my girlfriend amy and we saw gooselove (from antara and gooselove,
remember them?)  so we chilled with him and then we met up with antara and
bunty and this chick named barb. we had a blast at the concert. she started
it off with lucy stoners which i remember singing very loud. at one point in
the concert i remember screaming "i love you amy!" so loud that she looked at
me (at this point i had wormed my way up close to the stage) and after a few
captain's and cokes later... i just remember having a blast. and yes i am
scolding myself for seeing amy drunk... stupid stupid stupid....ergh...
that's my major screwup for this year!

i bought the girlfriends mag here in nyc about a week and a half ago and the pic of amy with her shirt open is on the cover. is it not on the cover in other areas? i was a bit shocked when i pulled the mag out of my kozmo delivery bag and saw amy with this look on her face like a deer in headlights and her shirt opened down past her cleavage...no, it isn't really a big deal but it just seemed strange to me. not that i didn't like it, but it did seem a bit unlike her.

just like everyone else, i will add on to the story.

those two girls who were moshing, claiming they weren't but yet were
bouncing off of everyone around them were so rude!  they pushed their way up
front and stood right in front of me.  on of them bounced off my toe so hard
it hurt the rest of the night.  sadly, they were not kicked out.  i saw them
after the show.

amy was beautiful and rocked the house!  i was so impressed with her.  her
humbleness floors me.  i mean she is adored by thousands and thousands of
women and men and yet she is still so humble.  i think that is one of the
things that makes her so great.

the thing i really didn't like was after the show.  from reading all the
posts about the other shows i was all excited to hang out afterwards to
maybe get a chance to talk to amy.  however as soon as the lights came up we
were all kicked out.  now i am not from chicago, i made the trek from mn to
see this show.  but since when does a bar close at 10pm?  i have never been
to a club that kicks you out right after the show before.  i thought that
sucked.  but other than that the show rocked and it was totally worth the
like $200 i spent to get there, see the show, spend the night and then get
home.  i loved the butchies and rose was impressive too.  what fun!  i just
wish i could have met some listees.

well,i am not sure how things are in chicago, but we went to the shows in
the boston area, and most of the clubs up here become like these stupid euro
trash wanna be clubs,so they boot everyone out as quickly as they can.this
didn't happen at the amy shows but we saw melissa ferrick at the paradise on
fri,and she was making fun of the club for doing that to her the last time
she played there,so maybe that's why they tried to get everyone to leave.

i just bought it today.  i do not think it is a flattering photo.  yes, we
all dream of seeing amy's shirt unbuttoned, etc. but i think it adds some
mystery not to see it also.  i just think her look says, "oh, my god!  what
am i doing?  i wish i could take this back already!!"  i just wonder if she
might regret it later.  i much prefer the photo inside the magazine where she
is lounging on a couch or something.  her shirt is unbuttoned there also, but
not so close up and not so much attention obviously drawn to it.  on the
cover where it tells about the article and it says something like, find out
what emily thinks--i couldn't help but wonder about stag or this photo!!!???

another note:
i got girlfriends at barnes and nobles.  i looked and looked and couldn't
find it.  i finally asked if they had it.  why is it located with the mens'
magazines??  i was looking in womens' interests.  and why is gay and lesbian
section so close to self-help?

i just downloaded that song (well actually i am 2/3 the way through

is just a misnamed mp3.  does anyone think they hear amy or emily?

hi everyone,

what a great time, i saw the show in nyc, she was great, the butchies were
great. that was my first experiance with them and i liked it.

but what i wanted to talk about is a moment that for me, will be forever
etched in my mind.

amy played lazyboy, and the crowd... the entire audiance... every single
person there was compleatly quiet. we listened with a compleat, undivided,
trance like intensity to every note.

not a sound was made. only amy's voice, and her guitar, that electric one she
plays quiet songs on and nothing else. the words "...and your beauty shop
hair" floated about the sea of tranquility that was her following.

i was wondering if anyone else had that happen to them. and if you could,
please tell me what your audiances did, i expected at club shows for there to
be a bunch of "whoo - whoo's"

please share.

thanks a million

well,
the crowd in austin was quiet/appreciative during lazyboy.  actually, as
group we were well behaved during the entire set.  i can think of one small
exception.  mountains of glory.  given the hub-bub about the meaning of the
term.  during the first chorus she opened her eyes a little and smirked.  a
roar followed closely thereafter.

hey joe, et. al,

well, i saw amy in columbus last week and as was
previously mentioned, the audience was not pin-drop quite
during lazyboy, unfortunately.  and, yes, it was at a
bar/club, people were drinking, and some obnoxious person
screamed "whoo!!!" from the back about three times during
the song.  i don't really see where that kind of a
response would be appropriate at any point during that
song, but apparently alcohol can change your perceptions
of proper show ettiquete. (and i've completely lost my
ability to spell that word...) actually, i don't know that
that person was drunk, i'm just hoping that s/he can at
least have that as an excuse.

amy also gave an introduction to the song, saying that
she wrote lazyboy about a chair that her family was kind
of obsessed with, because it was the chair her grandmother
died in.  then she corrected herself, and said it was
actually the chair that she fell into after she died.  she
said her family was divided as to what to do with the
chair.  amy said her father wanted to keept it and restore
it because he's thrifty.  i think her sisters wanted to
get rid of it.  and she said she thought of keeping it
herself.  so, because of this family turmoil over the
chair, she kept thinking about the chair and thinking
about it, and finally decided to write this song about it.
after the song was over, someone else (not the previously
mentioned "whoo"er) near the front, shouted out in a
seemingly drunk, half-non-chalant, half-concerned tone of
voice, "so, what'd you do with the chari?!"  amy replied,
standing about two feet from the mike, barely looking up
from the ground, "we, uh, we threw it away."

people were talking throughout the song, but not as bad
as during rose's set.  it was annoying, but not too loud.
as i scanned the faces of the crowd, (i was near the front,
on the side, elevated) i couldn't see any talkers, just
really attentive looking listeners, but i could still
hear a lot of chattting...  the applause were very
appreciateve.  no loud "whoo's."  that was nice.

i felt like i got a little more information about amy's
grandmother's death than i deserved to know (kinda like,
a little too much personal information about the shape of
amy's cleavage!!) from her explanation.  but, apparently,
amy's giving me a little more than i expect lately! guess i
bettter recalibrate the expectation meter. :)

peace all, melissa

hey all - thought some of you might be interested in this. for those who
remember benjamin, the singer from smoke (who did the spoken part on hey
kind friend), and played caiaphas (sp?)in jcs), who died last year or the
year before...apparently there was a documentary filmed about his life,
titled benjamin smoke, to be released shortly. the subtitle has something to
do with "queer southern blues"...i saw a poster for it at the local art
theater multiplex (oxymoron? happily, no) when i went to see memento the
other night. from what i've heard, he led a very interesting life...i'll be
interested to see this film.

just thought i'd let you know.

this may be a stupid question, and probably a discussion that i have
missed out on having just recently resumed my listee status, but what is all
the hub-bub about the meaning of mtns. of glory (my favorite song on stag
btw)?  and it may be something that is painfully obvious to most of you but

i thought the crowd at the chicago show was terrible during lazyboy.  people
were loud and drunk and generally rude!  at one point right near the end of
the song someone yelled "shut up" at one of the people who was laughing
loudly.  then amy finished the song and looked up (shyly i think) and said
thank you.  i am not sure if she was thanking those of us who were intently
listening or the person who yelled at the others to shut up.  i just know
that it was very embarassing to be in that crowd at that moment after amy
just told that very personal story to us.

sarah, et al,

this is exactly how i feel.  everytime i go to an ig show i
always spend about 90% of my time looking just at amy.
occasionaly, i'll glance over at emily, usually by accident.
usually, she distracts me with that beautiful singing and guitar
work of hers, darn her! :) then, i catch myself and redirect my
eyes to their proper location, talk about ogling women - re: hey
castrator... being that i am an amy person, i don't want to risk
missing one of those special moments where she, uh, does
anything! :)  but, i do feel guilty about it.  emily does
deserve her props, but i just can't keep my eyes off amy! :)

> however, with the butchies on stage with amy i had that whole
> divided attention thing again. i didn't know whether to look
> at kia (i think that's her name) who is the ultimate guitar

yeah, a couple songs into the columbus amy show i realized,
"hey! i won't be dissing emily today, amy's my only
option/obligation!"  but, darn it to heck, if those butchies
didn't keep catching my eyes and throwing me off. :)  kaia is
very intriguing with her often goofy faces, but oh so cute self.
melissa is just a riot.  whoever said the best description of
her was "animal" from the muppets, was right on!  she sure does
work up a sweat! :)  i think i like her even better when she
came up to the front mike and started spouting off silly/funny
sh*t, though.  she's hilarious.  and, al(ison) is quite a tasty
treat, as well.  :)  i love how the butchies dress "butch," but
you can see their "femme" aspects shining through as well.  al's
babydoll face, kaia's often soprano-ish voice.  and i love their
elaborate (read: matching) costuming!  i think i like them as
people more than i like their music, though.  not that i dislike
their music, their set was fun. it just doesn't get me the same
way as amy does, i mean, uh, amy's music does... :)  hence, why
i always look at amy?  anyone else find themself favoring one
over the other, visually, when at a show?  or do you manage to
divide your glances pretty evenly?!

> funny/interesting things amy said: about measure of me: "i
> went out on a date with this guy a couple of years ago audible
> gasps here form different audience members which i found
> amusing) actually it was four years ago but i'm stillin love

> if i wanted to be him or be with him. your basic lesbian
> dilemna. but i wrote this song for him."

boy, this is getting to be a longish post, but, i wanted to
respond to this too, so here goes:  i find it so funny that the
crowd audibly gasped, not everyone, but enough to be obvious.
personally, i find the info a little shocking, too.  i mean, i
found it somewhat shocking when i first found out about the
whole deal, a few years ago; back when, i think, "measure of me"
was "the boys just laugh" (although, i never heard that song).

anyway, i find this comment she made very interesting.  i'm so
curious as to who exactly this person could be.  although, i
know to even think about that is a personal death wish, i.e.
strictly prohibited, i.e. personal info.  but, anyway, i just
wonder.  like i'd ever find out.  but, it is something that i
quite curious about, especially the "still in love with him"
comment.  i find that quite interesting.  who is that lucky
"rock star"?!  i'm sure a lot of us can identify with being in
love with someone in a rock star kinda way, and it's interesting
(hello!  do i know any other word!) that amy finds herself in
that position, as well.  and this whole "dating" thing!  please
tell me it's not euphemistic!  no, that's not a good thing to
wish for.  well, she did say she felt unsuccessful in her
efforts, that's what the whole song is about, eh?!  okay, okay,
well there's a lot of ground i probably shouldn't be treading
on.  so, i'll stop, before i work too many people into a lather.
:)  but, it gets so hard when she brings it up ya know?!

and, lastly, something that shouldn't get my head bitten off,
if'n it's still attached at this point :), the basic lesbian
dilemma, do you want the guy or do you want to be him?  i don't
know that i've ever run into that myself.  all the guys i
like/find attractive are almost always effeminate gay men
(what's up with that?!), and i definitely don't want to be like
them, nor do i really want to be with them (hence: i am a
lesbian. just a little fyi, n case anyone was wondering...) :)
however, i have often run into the situation where i think i see
this really hot chick, and then i get closer or they turn
around, and it ends up being a guy.  and, oooh, how the image
goes from good to bad really quick.  potentially hot lesbians
end up being ucky lookin' guys.  but, maybe that's because, more
often than not, i don't like "butch" guys.  i always think,
"boy, you'd be cute if you were a woman."  anyone else have that
problem?!

don't ask me how that's related to amy's comment, but when i
read it, that's what i thought of.  well, i've said more than
enough now.  any personal hate mail, please send directly to me,
and don't bog down the list with unnecessary unpleasantness.
take care, y'all!

peace, melissa

hmmmm, maybe its a reaction to the fact that britney spears will do that on
rolling stone, kind of like "here's to your g*ddamn breast obsessed culture"
or something.  like "i can do it too".  amy *has* made comments about how
rolling stone will mostly only put women on in that context (and how they
can if they want but its seems like its always).

so...yeah....

"weird b" is this:

x24342

chorus:

e (open), full b (i.e. stretch with all fingers so that you can play the
high e string), a (open chord), f#

the only chord i'm not sure about is the "a" during the chorus -- amy seemed
to be doing some sort of modified a, but after noodling i couldn't figure
out what it was.  an open a seems to work just fine, though.  lemme know if
you discover something i haven't, and happy pickin'!

disappointing.... see now i have this fantasy going of them all singing it.
;) no wonder i cant find where ig is on it.  i kept thinking, where the hell

also, someone mentioned the "hubbub" over mts. of glory, i think that just
has to do with the line "hey baby, don't you want to feel

i think part of the hubbub has to do with the gender-bending sentiments of
the song...not often that a chick sings "im gonna miss being the boy. im
gonna miss being the man.'  amy has said, i believe, that it is a break up
song, and several writers have interpreted that statement and the lyrics as
representing amy revealing her butch inclinations and such. that and you
throw in a tittie reference and not even the gals can help themselves. (most
of this type of analysis has been in lesbian-oriented mags and such.)

i have to say... i doubt tori even knows who melissa ferrick is :p (tori
never played lilith too, btw..) a lot of times people mix other artists with
one song and shove it off to napster but they are rarely "real" recordings...
and melissa ferrick hates napster, btw..

subject:      louisville review [long]
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; format=flowed

the life of a grad student does not permit me much time for writing concert
reviews, but now that i have an extension on a paper i do not want to write,
i have decided to write about the show in louisville instead.  someone else
has already posted their thoughts on it, but mine are a little different.

two words: it rocked!!

rose started off with fell, i think, which is one of my favorites of her new
songs.  i thought that a song that powerful would quiet the drunk socialites
in the back, but i guess that was too much to ask for.  next she did a pooka
song called the car.  as usual, she sang the song without instrumentation.
i thought that the drunk socialites would be impressed with the power of her
voice and quiet down, but they did not.

she did a few more songs, which i can't remember right now, and ended with
molly's lilly, by request.  i saw her set list before she left the stage,
and it looked like she was originally going to play pollywog's lament and
olga's birthday.  i didn't mind missing those songs - she did one of the
best performances of molly's lilly that i have ever seen or heard her do and
gave me a new appreciation for the tune.  i don't know if it was that one or
one of the earlier songs in the set, but at one point she went into this
wailing vocalization that left me in a musical bliss for some minutes
afterwards.

the butchies played songs from their first two albums, only touching on one
or two from the new one.  high energy and a lot of prancing around the stage
(kaia did most of that).  i was not prepared for the show they put on.  the
last time i saw them, they pretty much stood up on stage and played their
songs and left.  this time, they seemed more relaxed and enjoying the
attention the crowd was giving them.

at one point, melissa (the drummer) went up to kaia's mic and invited an
audience member up on stage to play the cowbell.  apparently, it was the
girl's birthday and some of her friends had asked if she could do something.
i was kind of hoping to see this person y'all have been talking about on
the list, but maybe she wasn't at this show.  anyway, the girl did okay -
fit in well with the posturing.

i had pulled out the ear plugs for the butchies set, so that helped to drown
out some of the crowd noise.  even so, i could still hear the drunk
socialites in the back.  made me wonder if they had paid $10 for the music
or for the cruising.  at that point, i was hoping they would at least be
quiet for amy's set.

when amy came out, everyone around me went crazy.  i was pretty excited
myself.  thanks to the help of fellow lister anne haines, i was three people
from the front and center.  for those who care, amy played most of johnny
rottentail with her eyes open.  i didn't notice one way or the other after
that.

in fact, i was so wrapped up in the music and tired afterwards, that i don't
remember a lot of details.  i do remember hearing someone off to my right
call out a request for an indigo girls song, which was kind of annoying.  it
may have been romeo & juliet - i'm not sure.  i do remember it being an amy
song, at least.

amy was the most relaxed that i have ever seen her be.  she smiled, cracked
jokes, and chatted with the audience.  about two songs into her set, she
said something about how it was good to be in the south again.  we cheered
at that!  later when she said that she would definitely come back to
louisville, i yelled up that she should come to the midwest more often.  i
think she smiled at that.

tami hart came out and played one of her songs at some point in the middle
of amy's set.  she made me a fan on the spot.  if you haven't hear her yet,
please take a listen!  i was equally impressed with her finesse on the
xylophone...  ;-)

rose was also invited back onstage with the encore.  i think it was the on
song refugee that she shared the mic with kaia.  i was hoping for a rocked
out version of or.

all in all, this was one of the best concerts i have been to.  despite the
noisy crowd (and no, they didn't even quiet down for amy's set - i could
hear them through my ear plugs during the quiet parts), it was fun!

does anyone know if there is a boot of this show?  i thought about booting
it, but decided against it at the last minute.

mime-version: 1.0

remember the end of hey kind friend - the guy who
mumbles over the ending (ok, another song *i* wish the
ig would bring out of retirement) well, he died of
aids - there is a documentary of him (*and i saw part
of it online at one point, but forgot the url.)

this is a write up from murmurs.com
the upcoming documentary, "benjamin smoke" documents
the life of a flamboyent, fringe-dwelling, performance
art queen from cabbagetown, georgia. director and
documenter jem cohen describes it like this:

"i met benjamin in 1989 when i was in athens doing
some film work for the band r.e.m. i saw posters for a
band called the opal foxx quartet, and a number of
people, including r.e.m.'s singer michael stipe, told
me that this was a show i must not miss. we went to a
tiny venue, and in came a band that seemed bigger than
the audience. the band was led by benjamin, in the
guise of "miss opal foxx," a scrawny little powerhouse
in a sun dress, carrying a battered purse and belting
out an amazing set of songs: ballads of southern wear
and tear, punk rock rave-ups, strange blues and
everything in between."

for any of you who live in the chicago area, benjamin
smoke will be showing on 4 different dates at the
music box theatre on southport and addison.

showdates are: sat. 4/21, sun. 4/22, sat. 4/28 and
sun. 4/29. most times are early afternoon showings.
for complete showtimes, call the music box at
773-871-6607

also, for those of you who don't live in chicago, be
on the look out for this documetary at your local
independant theatres. jem strongly encouraged us all
to check it out!

michelle's not only playing in santa barbara as well as la, but she's playing with heather stevenson, my fav. local singer/songwriter (well, ok, except for the mades).

rocks is a small, nice venue. i recommend it if anyone in the area is thinking about the show. in la she's at the mint, also a wonderful venue. you can call and reserve a table for not much food cost (323.954.9630)

heather's music is on mp3.com, btw, if y'all want to check her out.

i just got a copy of the new ani album yesterday
(reckoning and revelling) and i love it.  i don't
think it is on sale yet, i got a promo....but when it
goes on sale i think y'all should pick up a copy.  the
sound is somewhat similar to songs on both up up up
and to the teeth.  the songs on reckoning are all
kinda slow but revelling has more up beat stuff.  just
thought i'd pass on my little critique of the album.

hey everyone,

i still have to write my dang review of the columbus show.  but,
until then, i'll just tell you about my meeting amy at the
in-store before the show.  of course, this will be long-winded,
as anything i write usually is.  if i'm gonna bother taking the
time to post the info, i'm gonna give you the full story...

the in-store was at magnolia thunderpussy; great name for a
place for a bunch of dykes to gather, eh?.  it is on the same
street as little brother's, the bar/club where the show took
place.  that was nice for parking's sake.  anyway, my partner
and i arrived around 3pm, the in-store was at four.  there was
no line or anything, just a few people milling around.  we left
and went to buy sharpies, just in case there wouldn't be any for
amy to use, which of course there were.  but, you just can't
take those chances.  anyway, when we got back, around 3:15,
still only a few people were milling and no line.  i started
talking to another couple who were sitting outside, to see if
they were forming a line, they weren't.  then the owner comes
over to us and shows us where the line will be and we all get in
line and commence waiting.

by 3:40 there still was hardly anyone around, let alone in line.
one lady kept getting in and out of line and about 10 or so
people were milling around the store.  i was already nervous, of
course, and this just made it worse.  i guess these others
weren't as obsessed as i in insisting on standing in a four
person line, with only about 15 people waiting around to see
amy.  anyway, by about 3:50, when amy strolled in out of the
rain, wearing a yellow jacket, there were about 20 to 25 people
in line.  she walked up to the owner, gave him her coat, talked
with him for a couple minutes then walked over to the signing
table and sat down.

our new friends went first, then me.  i had brought with me my
strange fire (original release) on vinyl to be signed.  someone
said they heard that amy might only sign things bought from the
store, to support the local record store, but, fortunately for
me, that wasn't the case.  so, i walked over to amy trying to
suppress just how nervous and excited i was.  i had finally
decided on something i could say to her (after pondering the
matter for years), but i was too nervous and couldn't bring
myself to recite my eloquently crafted sentence of praise/thanks
and admiration.  instead, i simply said, "hi, would you sign
this for me?"  amy said, "sure!" with a smile.  trying to keep
my hands from visibly shaking, i removed the album from its
sleeve and laid it down on the table.  she made a sort of
impressed look when she saw it was an original, or maybe it was
just because it was vinyl.  anyway, i managed to spontaneously
come up with, "i actually just got it a few years ago."
brilliant, i know.  she asked me if i wanted her to sign it to
me.  i said yes (of course).  then she asked me my name
(melissa) and how to spell it.  "one 'l' two 's's?"  i hesitated
for what seemed like an eternity trying to comprehend her
question and thinking "how do i spell my name?!" then, finally,
i said "yes," which was probably just a second and a half later.
in addition, to what i had planned to say, i also wanted to
wish her happy birthday, but i just plain forgot.  i did ask her
if i could get my picture taken with her and she said.  "well, i
wanted to get to these people [pointing to the others in line]
first.  so, if you have time to wait around and get in line
again, sure."  okay, that's in quotes, but it's not necessarily
verbatim.  but it pretty accurately reflects what she said...  i
replied, "sure, it's not like i've got anything else to do..."
then, i said thanks and waved my partner over to see amy.  i
stood there while she signed our stag cd.  i don't know what
they said to each other.  i was too busy just staring.  i'm so
bad! :)

then, we got back in line.  as new people walked in the store we
would let them get in front of us.  my partner was particularly
anal about this.  she wanted to make sure we didn't get our
"second" turn, before others got their "first."  so, when i was
up to see amy again, i walked over to the table and said "it's
me, again."  and, amy said, "ah, picture time."  i sort of froze
next to the table and waited as amy came out from behind the
table to stand next to me.  i had seen her step out from behind
the table to get a picture with someone else.  so, i was looking
forward to getting a nice picture.  she put her arm around my
shoulder, and, of course, i was melting.  i seized the
opportunity and ever-so-lightly placed my  hand around ms. amy's
back.  i tried to smile so i didn't look like a silly fool or
just a plain old stupid idiot.  trust me, i've done it enough to
not want my "amy and me" picture to be severely loused up by me!
well, i got my pictures just a day or so ago and they turned
out fantastically!!!!!!!  i have a pretty big smile on my face,
just a twinge away from looking completely geeked-out.  i was
actually very pleased with how i looked. i wasn't expecting
much, so i'm glad i didn't ruin the picture.  and, of course,
amy looks wonderful.  she's just barely smiling.  i think she
was wearing boots, with i don't know how much of a heel, but i
was surprised to see that amy's taller than i am, by just a few
hairs.  i'm about 5' 7&3/4".  amy looks about a half-inch or
maaaaaybe an inch taller than me.  anyone know her official
height?  or have any face-to-face comparisons?  i will put my
picture up for all to see *someday* whenever i can get my lazy
butt near a scanner.  that may be a while, but i'll try my best.
okay, well, that's all from me, for now...

peace ya'll, melissa

i know this is a silly question, but all i can find on the net are chord
lists.  my best bud has suddenly decided that ig is awesome and she wants
to learn closer to fine on the guitar.  she is a beginner, and would like
to see it fully tabbed out, if any such thing exists.

several years ago i could have plunked it out, but i have been away from
guitar for over a decade, so i don't think i can help other than to annoy
y'all.  :-)

and yes, i had told her for the past 5 years that ig is awesome, but
everyone makes discoveries in their own time.

asking people to not upload her stuff and hating napster are 2
different things.  melissa ferrick may just wish to control the
distribution of her own music -- that's my main contention with
napster; it takes the control out of the artists' hands.

did anyone get a stereo tape of amy's first two songs that they could
either mp3 or snail mail to me, i have a mono source for the first two
songs, but would prefer not to use them for an audio cdr.

anyone tape the butchies in boston as well, and yes, i have some
uncirculating stuff from this tour that i can trade.

(not to confuse anyone who thinks i have a complete boston recording - i do
- but i actually have both a mono and a stereo source, the stereo source is
missing jonny rotten and lucy stoners)

my favorite song right now would have to be laramie. and my second favorite
would be lazyboy. seeing amy preform those songs live just did it for me.

i got the new issue of the advocate today, the music
issue.  melissa etheridge is on the cover, promoting
her new book and cd due out this summer.  there's also
a nice two page piece on amy and stag.  there's a good
picture that shows her chest tattoo without a scary
expression on her face - check it out.  the new issue
doesn't appear to up on the website yet, but it should
appear in a few days.

:-)carrie
