chris williamson introduced suzanne westinhoefer when i saw her friday night.

it was a very lesbionic weekend in the city i guess!

oh, and speaking of lesbionic, jody bleyle (formerly of team dresch with kia) was there too! she's recording an new album this month but they still don't have a name.

wow! june millington joined them on stage?! millington is like one of the
godmothers of "women's music" (harkening back to the early olivia records
days). as is chris williamson.

the film i recommended to this board last week,
"kissing jessica stein" just won two awards from
the the independent feature project/west los angeles film festival (where i viewed the film).

the critics jury bestowed a special jury award for writing and acting to heather juergensen and jennifer westfeldt (who both starred in and wrote the film)and the film also won the audience award, which was voted on by the festival goers like me. the impressive thing about the audience award was that it was voted on
by gay and straight and male and female attendees!

when this film comes out, please see it! i have
already tagged it as the lesbian "moonstruck."

hkf's,

just got an e-mail back to confirm something i already
heard and wanted to let everyone know.  so how do we
get those free tix's for the saturday night ig show
(along w/ those other songwriters)?  well, here's what
tara murphy from 360 media said:

"you can get still get a ticket on saturday at the
festival by stopping by your favorite radio station
broadcast booth as they will all be giving away what's
left."

and my translation is that when she says 'on saturday'
she means you can get it at the festival including
also on friday since imho these tix's will run out
fast (hence the "what's left" part at the end).  so
when you get inside music midtown run to the nearest
z93, 96rock, or 99x booth to get your free ticket.
good luck!!!  (i'll need it too!)

ps:  always take marta: www.itsmarta.com

hey folks,

here's the review of amy's sf show that dee mentioned - online
at http://www.gogirlsmusic.com/features/ray0501.htm...

-sherlyn

---begin article---
may 2001
amy ray "live" in san francisco
april 27, 2001 - slim's - san francisco
punk and independent spirit lives in amy ray and
the butchies
review and photos by sandra t. molina

for those convinced that the spirit of rock 'n' roll, specifically
the punk movement, is in cardiac arrest since the recent death of
punk rock icon joey ramone and the ever increasing number of
cola-hawking pop kids, friday night alleviated that worry.

taking the stage in the first of a two-night sold out gig at slim's
in san francisco, amy ray and the butchies showed that the
rebellious, independent and in-your-face fun spirit of rock is
alive and pulsing through their veins. in fact, after a pleasant
opening set of original material by sarah dougher and a fun romping
set by the butchies, ray, a member of the indigo girls, did
something out of the realm of an act signed to a major label - she
helped set up her own equipment.

this do-it-for-love-of-music attitude is in keeping with the whole
idea behind releasing ray's first solo effort "stag" on her
independent label daemon records and taking it to the masses in a
month-long tour, which closed out this past weekend.

coming out on stage alone, ray picked up her mandolin and tore into
"johnny rottentail," a song about a social outcast. with a quiet
fervor, she strummed and sang as if she was in a trance, with eyes
closed and moving rhythmically to her own playing.

ray, known as the "intense" indigo girl, knows only to play at
full-throttle. she set the tone for the evening by giving an
emotionally riveting performance of that first song, and an
appreciative audience showed it was eager to join ray every step of
the way through the magic of her music. the mood intensified when
the butchies joined her on stage as the band that fueled her raw
musical style.

ray showed her sense of community and musical camaraderie by
bringing on dougher for a few songs playing fantastic keyboard.

the crowd reacted wildly to the song "lucystoner." this song,
which is about good ol' boy networking in all aspects of the music
industry brought the crowd verbally into the picture as it joined
in singing the chorus - "janny wenner, janny wenner rolling
stone's most fearless leader gave the boys what they deserve, but
with the girls he lost his nerve."

ray was thoroughly enjoying the sing-along, especially the lyrics
"lucystoners don't need boners."

after the song, there was a shout from the audience inquiring
about any response from rolling stone editor jann wenner regarding
the lyrics. she smiled and said that the magazine had a writer
review "stag" before knowing the lyrical content and its reference
to wenner.

"they pulled the fuckin' review," ray said with a little laugh and
a "can you believe it?" tone in her voice.

but ever the realist, she said wenner should get over the sour
grapes and that she doesn't care about being in rolling stone, to
which the crowd resoundingly concurred.

these first two songs showed that ray is definitely feeling very
comfortable in her own skin and while doing an excellent rock star
turn, she is still an expressive artist mixed with southern charm.

ray's easy banter with the audience showed her growth as a stage
presence, while her lead guitar work and the strong musicianship
of the butchies showed a band that rocked!

slower songs like "laramie" and "lazy boy" highlighted the
intricacy of her guitar work and the soulfulness and melodic
beauty of her lyrics.  "lazy boy" also showed ray's quirky sense
of humor and the humility with which she sees herself and life.

she told the story of how the song is about her grandmother's
death while sitting in a lazy boy chair and the response of each
of her family to the fate of the chair. she and her sisters
eventually threw it out.

during the song the audience was very quiet, listening intently.
"thanks so well for listening, i appreciate it," she said shyly.
"it's so cool" she added with a shrug and a look on her face that
showed her appreciation and happiness.

other highlights included the rockers "hey castrator," "late
bloom," mountains of glory" and the phil spector wall of sound
influenced "black heart today" and a stripped down version of
"measure of me."

during the encore, ray and the butchies did an all-out rockin'
cover of tom petty's "refugee," which left the crowd literally
wanting more.

ray returned to the stage sheepishly admitting that they didn't
know any more songs, but did persuade the butchies to come out
and play a butchie original, which she joined in singing.

after promising to know more songs next time, ray told the crowd
"goodnight y'all. rock on!"

here's to hoping there is a next time and with her help, everyone

hey all,

i was super pleased to arrive at work today (borders) and discover that there
is an article about amy in the may edition of their free monthly magazine!

run to your nearest borders and pick it up.  if for some reason you can't get
to borders (and i mean really can't), i'll think of a way to make sure that
everyone is able to get a copy.  i *do* work there...

anyway, i am (dah) back from japan and having a horrible bout with reverse
culture shock.

hey,

ok, here's the deal.  i've already received about 12 e-mails asking me to
pick up the borders magazine for people.  i promise that i will work
something out before the end of may.  i will work on taking a few copies
every time that i work (not too often), but probably will not be able to
coordinate anything (postage, etc) until later this month.  i got into
graduate school and really need to focus on getting an apartment and getting
my life in order.  i'll also be taking some time off work to apartment
search, etc.  so please don't e-mail me yet.  i *will* be taking a bunch of
copies home with me everyday, but won't be able to coordinate sending them
out for a few weeks...

her 2 sold-out shows at slim's. she played us an acoustic version of a song
from her new solo album "stag", and we shared some conversation about the new

the playlist for 10am also lists indigo girls - power of two.  this'll
probably be from the last time ig was interviewed on kfog back in '95 or

hello all,

in order to stir up some chat, i will toss this out about yesterdays
atlanta show.

for me that was the freshest that the two of them have looked in years.
and quite possibly that could be the most guitar soloing that i have
ever seen emily do in the ~20 shows that i have seen. quite frankly, the
first several shows i saw were all acoustic then i saw a series with the
bands, then  a few of each. i had come to the conclusion that the
non-band shows had less heart. before that i used to think that there
was so much coming out of the two guitars that they didn't need a band.
but the solo shows to me, got to a point where they were just stale.
yesterdays show sent me back many years. i don't know if it was because
of amy's recent solo trek or what, but there was a definite freshness. i
am interested to see if that feel stays with them throughout the summer
dates. i hope so.

have a great summer - todd

hi all,

in todd's recent post he talked about his history of watching acoustic and non=acoustic shows.

i also have seen a bunch of both versions.

although i think that the best version of three hits ever was one they played in conneticut at the palace with a band, i in no way would ever concider what they do as stale

i am one who fell in love with them because they were two girls and two gitars. todd, what was the first cd you heard? was it swamp ophelia? or sos?

usally, i've found that the later you picked up on them the more likely you are to enjoy their later style rather then what made them which was there acoustic roots.

all in all, if given the choice, i'd go to an acoustic show before one with a full band.

however.... i would love to see them with a full orcastra and chours!

well - the first album i picked up was the self-titled one, immediately after i saw the video for closer to fine. i was a senior in high school with my favorite bands at the
time being fugazi, bad brains, and the indigo girls. hows that for a mix? since that day in what ~89, i have been a huge fan. i am proud to say that i have evolved with them.
to this day there is not an album that i will not listen too. i like them all. i think you missed the point of my message. the music is timeless and i would never be so bold
as to say it was stale. the acoustic performance on the other hand to me had become a different story. yesterday seemed much different. i am interested to hear if anyone else
fealt that way. i fealt some of the emotion in the music that i remember from shows a long time back. i got goose-bumps for the first time in a long time. isn't it great when
music does that to you. absolutely. the best show i have ever seen with them was an acoustic show at river stages(nashville) about ~5-6 years ago. anyway, i am sure you get
the point and i'll stop short of saying that questioning my first cd as so or sos was a shot below the belt. cheers - todd

by the way, during the show, i believe a&e mentioned saratoga and san

hoping for another bay area show!

i'll post more on my atlanta trip in a bit when i'm not so tired and

in response to joe...
my first exposure to ig was rop.  after hearing galileo on vh1 i rushed
right out and bought the cd.  then came ig, then nis.  i think rop had a
very acoustic feel, yet also had a larger sound due to jerry moratta and
sarah lee and other "backing" artists.  i think what i'm saying is that an
album or performance can be more "acoustic" in nature, yet still have a band
backing up the girls.

as to the nature of the first post...
i've only been to two shows, the first being lilith fair in '97, the second
being the most recent show in eugene oregon last summer.  imho, they seemed
kinda weary at the eugene concert.  the show was good, but i just got the
feeling that they were fatigued.  maybe it helps to catch them near the
start of a tour?

ok, enough rambling for me.

~ chris

to everyone, and todd (so i guess it's to todd twice)

let me be the first to say i am surprised to hear that todd, your first album was indigo girls. it was 1989, and my story is very simmular to yours. i heard ctf ran out and bought ig and became an instant fan. i was 15 in 1989.

todd wrote:

todd... you would say it was stale.... you did say it was stale... that was the premis of my initial post!

unless i read it wrong, you said the acoustic show seemed "stale". that is 100% where i got that from .

and as far as feeling what i took was a shot below the belt... then you've got to start wearing pants with a much lower belt. i re-read my post to you, and can not see where any implications of the hint of a possible insult are.

i still think that my assumption was a safe one and i'll reiterate my point.... "people who like the later music from ig usally started listening to them later. those who like the acoustic stuff better started listening from "indigo girls" or "strange fire""

i still see nothing wrong with that statement. if you care to, how 'bout a thread where we all tell our first ig exposure and then our favorite ig music. acoustic, i.e indigo gilrs, strange fire, nomads or rock stuff, ie
swamp ophelia, sos, cons.

i didn't go below the belt on that todd. stiffen up that glass chin of yours. i'm friendly. (except when i'm not) =)

my first "listen" was sots.  and i enjoy their new stuff - electric, etc.
but, there is absolutely nothing that compares to just two gals and their
guitars.  i have to say i love their acoustic tours.  i enjoy the full-blown
band too - but i love the crystal clear voices and intertwining ryhthms of
the acoustic versions.

i'm going to agree with todd...that show was awesome (and i have seen them
play both band and no band). i enjoyed several songs more than i ever have
before (especially power of 2 and virginia woolf...and i think that was the
first time i've seen devotion live--it was nice:)

the only song that i enjoy more with a band is chickenman (especially with
michelle malone on harmonica..wowza!), but even it completely rocked.

i was particularly surprised with the crowd--though it was full of drunks
and people who were only there to see other bands, everyone was so quiet
during some of the songs (and did a great job of singing when needed, as on
kid fears).

it was a great show; i'm so glad they're playing together again...i missed
them as a duo!

hometown girls make good again

"they don't need an introduction, but i love to do it," said 99x's steve
craig. "here they are, amy and emily, indigo girls." the curb-to-curb crowd
roared their approval of the hometown duo. their biggest hit, "closer to
fine," got things started, with the fans singing the song's title line each
time the chorus came around. "it's just the two of us today, y'all," emily
saliers said, but that was better than fine. saliers remains a thoughtful and
underrated guitarist, providing lovely leads on songs such as "the power of
two." she and bandmate amy ray sailed through a best-of show that included an
energetic "shame on you" and a touching take on ray's ode to her grandmother,
"ozilline." "she was cool," ray said. then, gesturing toward the sunset side
of the sky, she added, "she's buried over there in the west end."

well, we all like them at different tastes.  that's ok.  i have to think
back, but my first cd was the solo one.  my mom's friend was listening to
it as she carpooled us around in 5th grade.  my first concert was, maybe,
in '93, in minneapolis for swamp ophelia and amy kicked an amplifier
during "this train."  she's been a rockstar in my book ever since.
