hey everyone!! having just returned from my very first trip to atlanta, and
my first midtown music fest i feel i can fairly put my 2 cents in. this, in
my and in my girlfriends opinion was by far not the best performance either
of us has seen live. we attended both turner south, and the sunday mainstage
show. for turner south (which by the way was awesome if anyone has a copy
willing to trade ig pics)we were in the 3rd row right stage, and for sunday
we were in the front, the only thing in front of us was the barrier. so it
was not like we were miles away and couldn't see or hear, honestly to us it
seemed like emily just wasn't in to it she didn't seem as relaxed & chatty as
she usually is, she seemed almost annoyed, strangely i thought amy was the
coolest and happiest i have ever seen her on stage, i think the time on the
road w/ the butchies did her wonders! please don't get me wrong they didn't
suck or anything like that, it's just that i've seen them 12 times, and my
girlfriend has seen them around 25 times and we agreed we have heard them
sound better, but i would also like to say that they had some very awesome
moments they did a beautiful version of po2(made me cry),and i got to hear
one of my favs thin line for the first time live, i was very excited! now to
answer those "burning questions",my first exposure to ig was in either 93 or
94, i was watching austin city limits (for mary chapin carpenter) and the
girls were on and i loved their sound so i went out the next day, and bought
indigo girls, i had heard ctf,but knew little else about them, i believe my
next buy was strange fire
then 1200 curfews, and then sos. so i know that there are those of you who
have been listening to the girls so long you were almost eaten by dinosaurs
on your was back from the 8 track store, but i don't believe that's what
makes you a fan, sure time and devotion to a group are very important, but i
think above all it's about the love of the music, and i can tell you it took
me about 30 seconds to fall in love w/ their music, and it's their talent &
integrity that has kept me here. so they had an off weekend it doesn't do one
thing to how much i love the music cause let's face it an off day at an
indigo girls show is still a pretty good fuckin day!!  whew, sorry for the
ramble......it's full moon!!

subject:      when you first heard ig, not an insult...
mime-version: 1.0

hey all,

excuse me for not remembering the names of those who began this
topic, but i think the idea of becoming an ig fan later than
sooner can be seen as an insult.  although, i don't think it is,
nor should it be.  whenever you became an ig fan, whether it was
yesterday or 10 years ago, is not something that makes you
better or worse than anyone else.  we are all fortunate ones
just for being ig fans at all.  how lucky are we to know, love,
and experience ig music?!  yes, we may feel more lucky to have
known about them longer, but it doesn't mean we are somehow
better for having discovered them sooner, just as it doesn't
signify that one is faulty for not having learned and began
loving ig music many years after they began playing...  i don't
think anyone was saying this, but, i think in general music fans
sort of think or imply this, playfully or seriously.  but, it's
just not true.

i'm happy to have been an ig fan(atic) since late '94, right
after swamp ophelia came out. i got it as my graduation from
h.s. present.  back then, when i joined the list, i was a
newbie.  now, i'm not.  i'm no better now than then, just very
fortunate.  aren't we all?! :)

peace all, melissa

hi everyone,

i'm sure lots of folks (including me) are interested in a copy of the
songwriters show. i'd be more than happy to be a branch in a videotaping tree
if someone wanted to start one up. thanks to the person who posted the link
for the pics yesterday.

hello all-

since i sent the message to which the current thread relates, i feel compelled
to send out a piece of an email that i sent off-list yesterday. after i sent my
message to the list i thought some might feel alienated by my comment however
if seen in this light, the comment may not be taken so harsh. and if it helps,
i just married an ig newbie. she was an easy convert.

here is what i sent:
<< the horrible thing about keyboards is that you cannot hear the chuckle that
is made when the person on the other end types. ........ i am fully aware that
a comment like mine,if taken wrong, would completely alienate new fans which we
all whole-heartedly embrase.>>

never meaning to insult anyone. peace - todd

fabulous characterization of the senior members of this list!  :-)  yes, we
were flying kites in thunderstorms to power our lowly tape decks back in the
day, but damn, the girls sounded almost as good as they do on mp3.

amen, sister.  amy and emily have been my rock through many phases of my
so-called life.  i loved them in my 20s when i was working hard and figuring
out my direction in life, they got me through my 30s as i moved to a new
place, started my own business and had kids, and now they are still
inspirational and meaningful for me as i'm dragged kicking and screaming into
my 40s.  i can't road trip for the girls anymore but i am still spell-bound
by their music and the integrity they've maintained as artists.  i see them
when i can and leave the front-row-squished-against-the-barricades seats to
those of you who are in a different place in life.  i've been there, done
that, and am now content to hang out dancing and singing in oh, maybe the 7th
or 8th row.  i will not be complacent just yet.  ;-)

heidi in nh (sad, lowly place not yet listed on the summer tour schedule)

subject:      results of the "stag" contest!!!
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

i'm pleased to announce the results of the contest i sponsored. i had
so many wonderful entries that i had a tie for first place between:

jason lee and kari schutty

they will both receive an autographed copy of "stag", a list tee shirt,
and the bootlegs of their choice.

nancy lambert's entry has been chosen as runner-up.

thank you to everyone who entered! it was really difficult for me to
make these decisions, especially since i know a number of you! :(

here is a summary of the winners' entries:

jason's entry described his entire ig collection being stolen from his
car earlier this year and he can't afford to replace any of the
official cds or bootlegs.

kari's entry won for most creative. she and her sister came up with a
fictional story that incorporated all (or almost all) of the indigo
girls song titles in the text. way to go!

nancy's entry was actually not for herself, but for a friend of hers
who has had a really tough life. she wrote that she would have liked to
buy a copy of stag for this girl, but can't afford to. i thought that
her entry showed a real giving spirit.

i wish i had more prizes to give away - everyone's entry was really
good and heartfelt, and i wish i could give everyone a prize!

thanks for entering, and congratulations to the winners!

well, the review is in and i am now proud to offer up a video of last year's
honor the earth concert in browning mt (with a song or two from billings
thrown in for good measure). i'm interested in cd-r bootlegs or b & p only.
there is no official deadline to this offer but patience is needed as i have
a feeling this could be a popular item. let's say i'll accept the first wave
thru this weekend (may 12-13).

to anyone i owe a bootleg to, please email me and let me know what i owe.
some things got lost in my chaotic life but now that i am back at the helm,
i'd like to get these matters cleared up asap.

thanks,
ryan

on the music choice cable service, the show lifetracks features amy ray of
the indigo girls. she talks a lot about neil's influence on their music.

even though i only caught part of the show last night, i heard two neil cuts
(sugar mountain and cinnamon girl) plus an indigos version of rockin' in free
world.

hi!

i just posted my pictures (about 30 good ones) from midtown.

http://www.indigirl.com/igc.html

click on the link to launch the photo album.

i'm not thrilled with the quality of the photo cd, so i'm going to scan
the turner south photos in on my own. the cd turned out way too bright,
so most of the detail is lost. :( oh well. big waste of cash, i
guess!!!

i also put an amy ray wallpaper that i made. feel free to download any
of the pictures, but if you're going to put them up on your site,
please just give me credit and let me know about it!

thanks!!!

well i just see the "how long have you been an
ig fan," as something similar to the "where were you when..."  meant to
bring back the good feelings  we had when we first  heard ig,
and the kind of journey,  we took that brought us to where  we are and
how ig fits in.

when i'm excited about something i love to share it. if somebody asks
me,"iwonder how hte got started....." or "how did they get to be who
they are now?'  i just want to rattle it  all
off, not because  i want to show off, but  i'm very excited and want to
share.

and i see other veterans in  groups i'm in talking about what things
were  like as an oppertunity for growth, rather than  a personal
affront. i don't see such discussions as an attempt to show off or to
downplay anybody.
at least that'snot my intention,if i come across
that way on the list,i appologize.

have a nice day everyone!

we are in the process of moving to washington.  we'll be pulling up
stakes the first week of june, and taking six weeks on the road from
florida to whidbey island, washington.  it's just northwest of seattle.
we'll be arriving the same week as a&e will be in seattle, but won't be
able to see the pier shows, due to move logisitcs.  are there any
listees from the seattle/whidbey areas?  could anyone recommend places
to go, bookstores, restaurants, etc?  we'll also be looking for a
babysitter and a playgroup for our two boys, ages two and four.  i'd
love to meet anyone who lives in the area!

unfortunately, i didn't get to catch dylan, he was on at the same time
the black crowes were on on friday night. my friends wanted to see them
so i went along to see the black crowes. i thought they were real good.
i didn't even mind that i only knew ~4 songs. chris robinson has a sweet
stage-presence. i missed the entire day on saturday. anybody catch
lucinda williams? since she has a new album coming out this summer, it
would have been nice to see what the new stuff will be like. as for
sunday, i caught the original p(parliament/funkadelic). after all these
years they still have it. unfortunately my wife started getting antsy
about getting a good spot for the ig show and made us leave before they
were done. the good thing about her doing that was that i got to see ben
harper do a couple of songs which i thought also were good. then the ig
show rolled around...'nuff said. i closed out sunday with steve earle.
he is always a lot of fun. the last time that i was at a festival where
the igs and steve earle were playing, seems like he came out and did a
song with them. that was river stages nashville ~5 years back. now that
i think back, i cannot remember if he played with the girls or shawn
colvin. anyone remember? that year sc played just before the girls.

good night -
todd

hello,

was listening to sots laaaate last night, and by the time shame on you
came on i'd left the room, but could hear the song playing in the
background, and it sounded a lot (well, it reminded me of) lucystoners,
and i was like, what did i put on? sots or stag...

was it me with my overly tired brain, or is there indeed a resemblance
between these songs. i know there's bound to be some resemblance being
that the songs are written by the same person, but well, it sounded a lot
like lucystoners.

anyway, enough ramble, back to work

hi to everyone
i've rejoined the list after a long break. the last time i lurked only, =
but reading all about the tours (round about the time of swamp ophelia) =
kept me inspired while doing a very boring desk job at the time.  felt =
like i'd been there with some of the detailed reviews
that were posted.

being in london means more reading about the girls than seeing them, =
though i count myself lucky to still be wearing out my double-decker bus =
euro tour t-shirt from '92.  first time i heard them was on a =
now-defunct london radio station (glr i think) back when i was starting =
at london uni around early '88.  highlight was seeing them at the mean =
fiddler (very small venue) on that 92 tour.

anyway, hi to everyone, and a plea.  myself and my partner are coming to =
the states on holiday and have just found out
that they are playing when we fly into sf on july 26.  but it looks like =
the saratoga winery concert is sold out already.  does anyone have =
tickets they are willing to sell? please reply direct to me at =
cress@sportsfix.co.uk if you've any suggestions.

then again, if anyone knows the likelihood of them touring the uk again, =
maybe i can wait!  but it seems unlikely.  if they
come over to the uk i'm hoping they'll play at the recently-opened =
"ocean" venue which is local to me in hackney, east london
(urban regeneration schemes & all that!).  they would certainly find =
lots of uk fans thereabouts - the hackney/stoke newington area has the =
highest percentage of lesbians in the uk according to popular belief!

if anyone can help, thanks. =20

oh my god.  it's been ages.  kiss kiss.  yes, i'm still alive.  no, i never
do shut up.

uhm.  i think becky b may have already sent this round to these here parts.
if so, tar and feather me.  but to do that you'd have to come to oberlin,
and if you're bothering to come all that way, you might as well come to the
folkfest.

oberlin folkfest.  all the cool kids are gonna be there.

where: tappan square, oberlin oh (oberlin is at the intersection of routes
58 and 511, about 35 mins west of cleveland and easily accessible via i-480

when: this weekend

cost: 2cents and a can of dog food.  a kiss and a guitar string.  nine pine
needles and a cat power bootleg.  okay, so it's free.  but bring some cash
so you can get the vegetarian pad thai at weia teia (the orange storefront
on college street, just down from the bookstore).  if you ask and you're
cute, i'd even go with.

why: because the oberlin folk club loves you.  and so does dar.

at the end of may, when i have a little more time on my hands, i will post

you may find it hard to believe after
all of the running around i've been
doing concerning amy ray solo music
but i finally got around to listening
to "stag" just this weekend!

after listening to the entire album,
the song i replayed the most was "black
heart today." even though i go out of
my way to be polite, kind, generous,
and so on i've had days where being
mean just seemed easier. i can relate
to that song a lot. does anyone know
what "spanish clementine" is anyway?

i also liked "measure of me" though
it reminded me of "don't give that girl
a gun" a bit. i'm not complaining, i'm
just saying they sounded similar. "laramie"
and "lucy stoners" sounded good to me
also. i liked the album overall, though
it makes me eager to hear the next ig
album.

i laughed the first time i heard "johnny
rottentail," so i'm glad amy left that
little touch at the end of the tune.

as for the "pretty vision" ep, besides the
people still waiting to get their copy
from jane in fl, is there anyone who is
expecting a copy of the ep who still has
not received it yet. i have already had
one instance where it seems to have been
lost in the mail (hi avelyn!) and needs
to be resent.

once again, if you have not ordered a
copy and still want one or if you are
still waiting and you are not dealing
with jane in fl, please e-mail me
privately.
