last night after work i went to the doctor.  well, i was standing in front
of the desk when all of the sudden hammer and a nail popped into my head.  i
started to actually pay attention and what do you know?  they were playing
the real version with amy and emily's voices as background music in the
doctor's office.   that was my ig excitement.
other than that i am just bored and sad that ig isn't coming anywhere close
to mn.  i think i am starting to experience withdrawals!

i hadn't seen this posted.  this showed up on 1945's website last week:

may 29, 2001
well, we have rescheduled our cd release party june 12, 6:30pm, at the magic
platter and we need everyone to show up so they don't move half of their
inventory for no reason. also, daemon is doing a value added release of some
live recordings of amy ray and the butchies to give away with the purchase
of our record at indie-coalition record stores. this means that when you buy
our record you get a free cd of amy live doing songs from stag. these will
be in limited numbers, so show up at our magic platter show to get yours
before they run out. if you don't live around birmingham then check the
daemon website for information regarding which record store locations will
have copies of the value added release.

is much music the same thing - if it is - i can get a friend to cover it
-hopefully -  they just added it to the digital cable offering (along with
indie film channel and sundance- was watching fugazi on cable tv at my
parents house was a religeous experience yesterday, even tho i have the movie.

igc - amy loves ian mckaye. ian mckaye is lead singer of rem, lead singer
of rem played with ig a few times, rem is on self titled.

if amy ever covers fugazi - it would be um.. well. something.

bc-obit-hartford,0430
john hartford, 'gentle on my mind' songwriter, dead at 63
by jim patterson
associated press writer
nashville, tenn. (ap) - john hartford, a versatile and wry
performer who wrote the standard "gentle on my mind" and turned
his back on hollywood to return to bluegrass music, died monday at
a hospital after a long battle with cancer. he was 63.
the singer-songwriter, comedian, tap-clog dancer, television
performer and riverboat enthusiast had cancer for more than a
decade. he died at about 4:45 p.m., said hospital spokesman russ
gannon.
"gentle on my mind" has been broadcast on radio or television
more than 6 million times, according to broadcast music
incorporated, which collects song royalties. it has been recorded
more than 300 times, most prominently by glen campbell in 1967.
hartford's career rambled from hollywood to nashville, with
stops writing and performing on network television, thousands of
shows at bluegrass clubs and festivals, and stints as a licensed
steamboat pilot on the mississippi river.
at the height of his fame in the early 1970s, hartford
reconsidered his decision to take an offer to star in a detective
series on cbs. instead, he returned to nashville and resumed his
career as an innovative, relatively low-profile bluegrass
singer-songwriter.
"i knew that if i did it, i would never live it down,"
hartford said of the television series in a 2000 interview.
"because then when i went back to music, people would start
saying, 'oh, he didn't make it in acting so he's gone country."'
born in new york city and raised in st. louis, hartford was
enthralled as a youngster by riverboats and bluegrass music, in
particular that of lester flatt and earl scruggs. he moved to
nashville in 1965, and his first album "john hartford looks at
life" was released the following year.
hartford's version of "gentle on my mind" from second album
"earthwords & music" was a minor hit in 1967. the song is about a
hobo whose mind is eased by the thought of a former lover.
hartford moved to california in 1968, landing a job writing and
performing on "the smothers brothers comedy hour." his went on to
the cast of "the glen campbell goodtime hour."
returning to nashville in 1971, hartford released the landmark
acoustic album "aereo-plain" and continued to record until his
death.
he was one of the performers on the hit soundtrack to the film
"o brother, where art thou?"

i know of only two shows, the wake forest, nc, and wolftrap, va, shows, both
in 1997, where guys have proposed marriage on-stage during the ig show.
anybody know of any others?  anybody have any follow up? =)

the wake forest show is very dissapointingly cut at the end of scooter boys.

i don't know about onstage.. but i know back in like 1990 at chastain park a man wanted to propose to his girlfriend after a certain ig song.. that wasn't on the setlist.. someone sent a note backstage and the song was played with the intro that went something like.

"there's a couple out there in the audience and (woman's name) kyle has a question he'd like to ask you and we'll talk about it after this song.

he proposed, she accepted and after the song the girls asked what the answer was.. "she said yes" he yelled at the stage.. at which poin the entire crowd went wild and toast were abundant..

it was fun.. and they are still married!

got the following additions to my list of shows that featured marriage
proposals:

4/12/97 / whittemore, durham, nh / university of new hampshire
8/12/96 / hampton beach, nh

now, curiousity beckons to find out if any of them panned out.

btw, is these are anyone's favorite shows, i have them both.  not saying what
the quality is anything special but i can put them on cdr which usually
improves the sound.

all right!!! i just became even more of a fan of ferrick.

ryan

====================
ferrick pulls out of michigan 's womyn's fest

debate on trans ban continues

by sarah mieras

walhalla - the woman-born- woman only admittance policy of the michi~an
womyn's music festival has increasingly come under fire ftom transgender
activistsiu recent years. in an interview with b~l last week,
singer-songwflter melissa ferrick announced that her personal conflicts oer
policy won't allow her to play at the ann~al event slated for august 7-12.
"i don't want to be and

please see, ferrick, pg. 3

ferrick

contnued from cover

i refuse to hecome any sort of person that is standing up for separation,'
said ferrick.

ferrick, a ten year veteran of the stage, was scheduled to headline the
thursday auguest 9 night stage along with ise of kltzbos and laurra love.
the show would have marked ferrick's second appearance at the festival,
which is held on more than 65o acres of private land in northern michigan.

currently on the road promoting her recent release "valentine heartache,"
ferrick posted a journal entry on her web site "rightonrecords.com" asking
her fans for input on the festival's separatist policies. during a phone
interview with btl she indicated that after receiving the deposit check from
the festival her personal conflicts be-came too intense for her to perform
at the event.

"what i am starting to come to in my life is that i am really against
separation and i am against it in all forms. i think it is starting to hurt
the lgbt population. gay men and lesbians just don't have dinner enough
to-gether," explained ferrick. "i think it is really inportant to send a
message of queer unity, for all of us to come together."

performing at the womyn's festival, said ferrick, is different than
attending the event. as a performer she is making a statement, and taking a
check.

i'm not going to the women's festival. i'm going as a paid artist and that
means i am supporting it. would i play a festival for white supremacy -
absolutely not. i am not going to play it;" said ferrick.

possibly alienating her fan base, which has a large base of younger lesbians
who identify as queer, said ferrick,  also played.a role in her decision.

they are pierced and tattooed and they to be understood. they just want be
loved and be in a place where they are accepted", she said.

by withdrawing from the lineup ferrick said her intent wasn't to create
controversy, instead it was a personal decision.

"it's not to create a controversy. i think it is really important to me to
stand up for my fans," said ferrick. "i don't agree with a lot of things
that go on there."

elaine,

that link you sent seems to go to a blank page, so i have reproduced
the mission statemtne below.  and, yes, you are correct that their
mission statement did not used to include anything about gender
identity.  nor did it used to include bisexuals.  i am very glad to see
they have broadened their horizons and become more inclusive.

i thought some of you listees would like to see this....

did you know that there are over 36,000 nuclear weapons around the world -
enough to destroy the planet several times over? thousands of these weapons
are still on "high alert status," ready to be launched in minutes.

you can help!

join me in telling our elected officials "enough is enough!"  we can do
something to reduce nuclear weapons and create a safer future.  send a free
postcard to the president at:

as the most powerful nation in the world, the us should take the lead in
reducing nuclear weapons.  for our kid's future, let's make nuclear weapons

people who use the word queer generally do so in allegiance with other
people who are "queer"--those outside the mainstream.  they argue
against what they see as strict identity politics like using the words
"lesbian", "gay", etc, and opt instead to align themselves with *all*
who are outside the mainstream.  a lot of people who identify as queer
refuse to identify beyond that--for instance, a queer woman might
refuse to say whether she is bi, lesbian, trans, etc.

also, the word queer provides more space to move within.  everyone
thinks they know what a lesbian is, but what about a woman who only
ever has relationships with women, but between relationships will, at
times, sleep with men?  or a gay  transperson?  queer just works
better for many people.

this is all just my experience.  ymmv and all that.

sorry to be dense, but the phrase "younger lesbians who identify as
queer"
throws me.  what other kind are there?  i'm sure there's some subtle
point
implied by that wording but i'm missing it.

my wife and i used to bypass giving hrc any money at all because of their
trans and bi exclusion but now that they have changed that, we are donating
to them and telling them why. i think it is important these organizations
know we are appreciative of their efforts to include all queers.

i like that setiment a lot, ryan, but i'm still skeptical of hrc.  i'd
rather give me money to grass roots orgs instead of those more geared
toward rich folks...

nancy, keep in mind that some (if not all) the state pirg's (public interest
research groups) do grass roots campaigns with/for hrc. in the short time i
worked for oregon's organization, i know that they were transitioning into
an hrc campaign involving a ton of local canvassing.

i was about to write the same thing...i haven't ever left, but i've been
no-mail for most of this spring since i've been travelling so much...and i
came back to almost nothing - i thought i had forgotten to turn the list
back on, but people just ain't saying much.

anyway, while i'm here, my semi-annual wee bit o' spam:
i'm playing a bunch of dates in places where my draw is fairly small, so i
thought i'd throw it out to y'all and see if anyone wanted to come to a
show:
6/23 atlanta pride. market stage. 2:30 pm.
6/24 houston pride - with my band
7/05 *eddie's attic* . my first real show at eddie's!  indie-pendence day
celebration with karen e. reynolds, leslie berry, and lauren fincham.
7/07 garbo's in charlotte, nc - new club dedicated to bringing woman-fronted
bands/music to charlotte - run by brenda from doubting thomas...
7/13-7/26  the city girl  tour - with meghan cary and brenda white (of
chapter in verse): albany, binghamton, p-town, northampton, boston, and
more...

if you're interested in hearing more about any of these shows or getting
added to my mailing list,  drop me a line...otherwise i'll shut up until
there is something ig to talk about...

nancy,

i appreciate your point of view.  in many ways, grass roots efforts
need our help more than an organization like hrc because they generall
do not rely on any kind of large corporate donations.

however, i believe that an organization like hrc does have its place in
the "revolution" alongside our (very hardworking and often
underappreciated) grass roots efforts.  while i have not been entirely
happy with the way that hrc has managed itself fiscally in the last
couple of years, and i am not a big fan of the corporate feel, i think
that gaining some recognition at that level is extremely helpful.
moreoever, an organization like that has the resources (staff, time,
opportunity) to organize large gatherings and other nationwide events,
so the more grass roots folks can keep the focus at the state and local
level.

i was very critical of hrc before they changed the mission statement,
and now that they have made the alterations i will wrote them and let
them know how pleased i am.  however, they still have some reaching out
to do, most notably in the area of minorities.  many minority groups
felt as alienated by the mellenium march organizers and hrc as the bi's
and transgender groups did.  so bravo for the new mission statement,
but  let's wait and see how they implement their new inclusive
language.

my 2 cents... probably more than anyone needed to hear.  heh.

jean
