just to offer another view (i'm quite pro-michigan, in the womyn born womyn
sense, after a lot of thought and consideration), i think that ferrick is
wrong to compare the mwmf to "a festival for white supremacy." while i am
completely supportive and understanding of her choice not to play (i think
strong conviction is good almost anywhere you find it), i think it's
important to realize that women of all ages, races, sexual orientations, etc
are discriminated against, and have a real need to create a sense of
community for themselves away from other groups (i.e. men). the exclusion of
transgender individuals is much harder to explain/deal with, but i think the
goal is to create a space where there is a diverse community that still
shares the common experience of having been raised as a woman.

one more note on the comparison to white power/supremacy (it was the main
reason i felt really compelled to respond)...it's a lot more like a black
artist playing at a festival where only blacks are allowed. it is a
celebration of a culture/people who are constantly discriminated against
and/or forced into assimilation, and is really helpful in combating such
things.

just my opinion...i hope it doesn't earn me flames, but i wouldn't mind
personal responses if anyone has a problem with anything i've said.

but you see, there is no cookie-cutter template that "women-born-women" are
created from. you may not understand my experiences at all. i may not
understand yours. you most certainly cannot understand what it means to be
in a cruel limbo of growing up transgender and being called "fag" by the
boys (thereby being excluded from the secret, white-boy handshake club the
separatist community trots out as their excuse on why trannies can't be
"real" women). disenfranchised by both sexes. transgender people get a
fucking crash course in discrimination which policies like this support and
indeed encourage. my wife has lost alot of steam in her career after
deciding to transition and she is only now able to rebuild what was once a
stellar career. she's one of the lucky ones. too many disenfranchised
transgender folks are dead today because of institutions such as mwmf which
says "you are not welcome...or you are welcome only if you deny your
reality." separate but equal doesn't work.

so discrimation is ok for those groups who have been discriminated against?
i don't buy it. never have, never will. two wrongs don't make a right. you
know, with dubya's folks sitting in power right now, the last thing the
queer community should be doing is diluting their power through divisive
policies that say "you don't count in our world". i get sick of trannies not
getting the credit they deserve. stonewall was all about the trannies
standing up and saying you know, we don't have to take this shit anymore. i
find it disheartening that 30 years later, their struggle hasn't been able
to move beyond this very simple premise. so much energy wasted just getting
the gay & lesbian community to acknowledge their contribution to the
movement.

not everyone feels that only women who are born in female bodies count as
women.
i'm anti-michigan because of their policies. i know many women who were
born biologically male and suffered cruelly because of it.  i used to be a
bit "transphobic" until i got to know these people, and then i realized how
stupid i was being.  the women i know who are trans are just as female as i
am.  they were female all of their lives, but cruelly born into the wrong
body.  they don't act like men who just happen to be in drag--they act like
women.  i know that one of the sillier arguments about not allowing trans
women into the festival is the shower issue--it's okay if trans women who
have had surgery are in there, but heaven forbid we see a penis.  just one
bit of info that i've gleaned from knowing trans women...ones who haven't
had surgery are almost terrified of anyone even mentioning the dreaded male
body part, never mind wanting to show it off.

i'm sorry, but discrimination is discrimination, no matter how you try and
justify it.

hey y'all, this was sent along to me and being an ex-girl scout.. wanted to
pass it along ..

girl scouts attacked for inclusion of lesbians and gays

a group of religious extremists called the american family
association,
based in tupelo mississippi, is attacking the girl scouts
because that
organization refuses to discriminate against lesbians and gays.
unlike
the boy scouts, girl scouts has always been inclusive.  in the
mid-90s, the
organization went on the public record with a statement to the
associated press that said it does not discriminate based on
sexual
orientation.

a few months ago, the girl scout national president, connie
matsui, made
favorable remarks about a video called "that's a family," which
positively
depicts lesbian and gay family groups.  (ms. matsui attended a
screening
at the white house during the final days of the clinton
administration.)

the bigots at the american family association have sent 10,000
letters
of protest to the national girl scout organization, demanding
that ms.
matsui retract her statement and/or resign. in contrast, the
girl scouts
have
received only 5 -- that's right, five -- letters of support.

please write to ms. matsui and let her know that we appreciate
the girl
scouts' stand on behalf of diversity and of gay and lesbian
families.
and please forward this message to all of your friends.

*send messages to cmatsui@girlscouts.org *

it's important that the girl scouts hear from us, since they are
beginning
to equivocate on their stand. let them know that they are doing
the
right thing.

i find it interesting that michigan has decided it has such a
cast-in-stone decision about transgender people, after all this time, and in
this time of so-called such enlightenment in our society. i don't think so.
their position calls to mind an awesome quote someone recently posted to
the dar williams list: rabbi sheila peltz weinberg, as she visited auschwitz:
"as i stood before the gates, i realized that i never want to be as certain
about anything as were the people who built this place."
you'll notice, by the way, that the anti-queer movement has no trouble
lumping us all together: lgbtq.

this discussion has and will go on and on forever...  but please don't
compare radical feminist separatism to gas chambers and concentration
camps.  i think you all can make your points without resorting to
ridiculously overdramatic comparisons.

creating separate places is an important tenet to radical feminism.  if
you don't believe in it, don't go.  that's all there is to it.  but i'm
sure michigan will continue long into the future because so many women
*do* believe in it.  no one is forcing musicians to play at this
fesitval, and obviously no one is rounding up all the trannies to kill them
in a gas chamber at this festival.  please.  i understand the complicated
and controversial issues surrounding transgendered folks.  but not being
admitted to a music festival is not really a life or death issue.  and i
don't know any radical feminist who won't support anti-discrimination
protections for transgendered people in jobs, housing, marriage and
child-rearing, etc.

flame me if you will, i've definitely heard it all before.

dates this august:

sun 08/12/01   ann arbor, mi  blind pig

tue 08/14/01   minneapolis, mn  first avenue

does this mean she's probably doing another tour? the dates are pretty

the venue (sun theatre) is extremely small. i think capacity is about
1,000-1,200. given that this is the only l.a.-area show, i wouldn't be
surprised if it's sold out. the sun theatre is by edison field (where the
anaheim angels play), just off the 57 freeway. the area around the stadium
has been redeveloped, and most of it is fairly safe, as long as you don't
wander too far away.

hi all,

how have you been?  i have been kinda lurking for a while.  i think i have
been in a deep ig depression.  i didn't think i would get to see them at all
this year.  but things are looking up.  i get to see them in ca in july.  i
am so excited.  i am having major withdrawals and i just can't wait.  we are
going to the mountain winery show on the 26th and the fillmore show if luck
is with us to get tickets through ticketmaster when they go on sale.

just had to share my joy.  i am sure a lot of you are feeling the void in
your year of not getting to see the girls together.  i mean amy is great,
but a+e=ig which = pure happiness.

last week, i was driving home from work and decided to listen to wxpn for a
change.  i was surprised that a pop song was playing the turntables, and i
just kept driving in the beautiful summer evening air.

the next song was watershed.  it's nice to listen to the indigo girls sing
on the radio.  their voices just singing along with their guitars--"and
there's always retrospect
(when you're looking back)
to light a clearer path
every five years or so i look back on my life
and i have a good laugh"

but, instead of jumping back five years, i jumped back ten years and looked
at the girl, two years' into college, taking three sciences and a religion
class (also band & badminton)--such a diligent student.  she is so different
from me, even though we have the same roots--she is still a baby.

how did i ever get through it.  i marvel every day.

happy indigo-touring, y'all.

and, if anyone has a roadtrip going this summer for the new
england-pa-virginia concerts, let me know.  maybe we'll all be blessed by
the incredible jillyc once again.

smiles and winks,
diane

correction. i guess michelle's in boise, id on the 18th. i had looked
before and saw she was going to be at the show on the 19th and mistakenly
believed she would be at both. i have no idea who opens on the
18th. sorry!

opener on the 18th is rose polenzani - there's a full list up at
the official ig site, if you click on "tour dates" on the main page.

not just content with releasing a new album and opening shows for
ig, rose polenzani has shouldered the burden (long overdue by somebody or
other) of putting up a voices on the verge website. there are demo tracks
- one from each musician - under the "music" section, and the main page
says they'll be posting updates about their live cd (even longer overdue
from rykodisc, the bastards) which was recorded in philadelphia in front
of jillyc and me, plus also some other people. according to mckeown,
rykodisc has been saying november, and this makes it seem as though that
might actually happen. woo.

        while i'm here...

(pause for eye rollage by those who know what i'm going to say already)

...or rather while we're all here sitting on our hands in music
drought waiting for the ig tour or for their next cd or for the voices cd
or whatever, may i suggest that everybody head to the website of the
lovely beth amsel (one quarter of the voices and a great solo talent) and
pre-order kindling, her newest cd, which is coming out next week, either
online or by snailmail. anybody who's seen her live in the past... well,
two years and knows any of her new material can tell you, it's gonna be
amazing. and you're reeeally getting down in the dirt and supporting
independent music when you buy this album, because it's a private release.
the woman is incredible, folks, so don't miss out. :)

two unimportant things:

you played badminton?? i've spent two years searching (not very hard, i'll

people, feel my pain...

<<may i suggest that everybody head to the website of the lovely beth

you may indeed - that's www.bethamsel.com, kids. it's gonna be fabbo.
we have front row tickets to see shows by paul simon, brian wilson, ray
charles and randy newman this summer, but i still think beth is gonna hold
on to the no. 2 concert-of-the-year spot, held off only by the
too-wonderful-to-ever-put-into-words eddi reader (buy her latest album
simple soul, or her last one angels and electricity and if you don't like
'em i'll give you your money back) whose cover of the girl with the weight
of the world in her hands was the very first indigo girls song i ever heard,
even though i didn't know it. and on that
tying-everything-back-into-the-indigo-girls note...

buy the new beth amsel and eddi reader albums.

i'm looking forward to when amy comes to mpls (now that the word is out)
however, i'm also bummed that i can't go to the ig summer concerts!.

stag is soooooo angry, i wonder what it will be like to switch gears and
hear the more pop-oriented ig standards we're all used too.

i don't know if i can ever go back to that. i was an amy fan before, i'm
a bigger one now.
on the other hand i love emily too, she just seems very thoughtful,
though she loves to rock out (like amy) she also seems very quiet, on
stage, and optimistic. we can all learn from her willingness to pray, be
thankful, and to laugh at ourselves.

peace you all,i'm off to see amy goodman at first unitarian society 900
curve, mpls at 7.
to nightanyone in the twin cities interested iin hearig about the crisis
at pacifica the tickets at the door are $15.

see ya!!

the benjamin smoke documentary is on the sundance channel at 1:05am on 6/17.  smoke was a friend of ig's, former leader of atlanta band smoke, who played on hkf.  description:  "filmmakers jem cohen and peter sillen pay tribute to the musician, hustler, and occasional drag queen who died from aids complications in 1999."

amy's comments on smoke from the may 1997 "stomp and stammer":

>why did choose to use smoke as you backing band on "hey kind friend"?
>
>"i love smoke! it's like love walking into the room. i wrote that song after traveling around a little bit. these last couple years i'm kind of a recluse but i went on the road for this song, to run away a little bit from things. and it's just a journey song. and i felt very hobo-like when i was going through these experiences, and kind of like a vagabond without a home. so, smoke was my ideal band."
>
>i kind of expected it to sound more like smoke than it does.
>
>"yeah, i did, too. but it's funny, 'cause to me, it sounds like smoke, 'cause i know what it sounded like before, before we did it with them. i think the thing that people don't understand is what great musicians those guys are. it's not like they had to make it their song, you know. like, some bands we play with, they can't adapt it's gotta be their way, or it can't happen. but with them, it's not like that. they were really gracious and wanted to do the song in the way that the song was, even though i didn't care one way or the other. but in the end i was really glad. i wanted a little more benjamin in it, but that was a particular day, and it's hit or miss."

depends  because the general consensus had been maxell and kodak used to be
bad and ricoh used to be great, but i cant even find ricoh cdr's any more.

good cds = verbatrim!!!! tdk, pny, memorex (i like them) and maxell will be
ok,i like kodak as well. mitsui is ok if you can get a spindle

bad - nashua - the data cd's were horrid - their audio cd stuff is ok,
costco cdr's are frowned upon as well. usually really cheap cdr's dont work
too well. i did, however get some good cdr's from microcenter for 9 bucks
for 50.

hi elle!  my suggestion to you would be to go out and buy a cheap tape
recorder (not a microcassette recorder though, they suck...although a poor
recording is better than no recording at all..) i have a tape recorder i
bought at radio shack for $40 (it's an optimus ctr-115 that has a built-in
mic) that tapes great. i had another one that i got for also about $40 but
that one hummed (so during soft moments you could hear the humming...)
anyway, i love my new recorder. i would start out with something inexpensive
unless you are a real quality buff. lots of people have minidisc recorders
and swear by them, but then you need to have a setup to convert from minidisc
to cd, etc. i also think it's best to have cheap equipment unless it gets
confiscated - so far i haven't had that problem. my recorder is pretty small
so it fits in the inside pocket of my purse (so when i open the purse up to
be searched you can't see it). before the show starts i usually go to the
bathroom to reorganize myself and move it to an outer pocket of the purse. i
always conceal it - especially at larger venues where they have a "no taping"
policy. (i've even seen people get their equipment taken at places with no
such policies so in my opinion it's always better not to let anyone know what
you're doing, cause you never who is going to freak out on you, especially
the rent-a-security geeks.)

anyway, if you're taping the most important thing is to have a watch so you
can check the time so you know when to flip or switch tapes. the other thing
is to have fresh batteries and to try not to sing along - then you don't have
to hear yourself on the tape when you play it back.
:) lisa

we need to get something going on this list,
so i want to start a thread.

what is either your favorite ig video
or favortie ig moment on camera? it
could be a television guest spot, a home
video, a something from the three
commerically released videos, a bootleg
video moment, whatever does it for you.

i'll start:

my favorite video is probably "joking"
because i think the video captures
the mood of the song and new orleans
looks so cool in that clip.

my other favorite moment is when ig
were on "austin city limits" for the
first time back in '92 and emily
did a beautiful rendition of "fare the
well." the backlighting was perfect and
mary chapin-carptenter improvised backing
vocals. i smile every time i see it!

what is yours?

glad to see someone trying to encourage new threads.  i'll take the bait :-)

my favorite ig moment caught on tape is from a compilation tape i bought off
ebay that has this in-store performance, i don't know when, i don't know
where, but it's about the time of nis.  they play hammer and nail and debate
on what to play next since they have just woke up and are feeling rusty.
the crowd is eagerly shouting out requests and the girls decide to play
something that they would not play at the show later that night and break
into love of the common people.  it's sooooo cool!  they seemed overwhelmed
by the response of the crowd.

my favorite tv spot is their appearance on the conan o'brien show around the
time of so, where they play touch me fall (which is also my fave video -
love the special effects).  amy rocks on the conan bit.

now for my nigc:  is anyone going to see michelle malone in cincy this
sunday?

peace yall,
joey

but do they mean that the live cd is of 1945

did 1945 tour as a backing band/opener during
the stag tour?

nope, they're using a live amy cd (which is probably three or four tracks)
to sell a 1945 album. i'm not sure i like that idea - probably because i
don't like 1945.

but if they were so inclined to expand their offer it might encourage me to

hey folks-
been awhile since you last saw a&e? this summer's tour not stopping
anywhere near you? just generally in need of an ig fix?
good news! you only have to hang on just a little bit longer because
coming very soon to an ig email list near you, 11 brand-spankin' new
discs are gonna be offered up to the masses!
nope, i'm not kidding. our tireless local boot guru, neil, has been
hard at work putting together several fabulous new compilations of ig-
related material, which are now ready for distribution!!  so, what does
it contain, you ask? excellent question. read on...

indigo guests: a 3 disc collection of songs by other artists to which a
and/or e lend their musical talents

live at the fillmore 11-20-99: the complete 2 disc unofficial
accompaniment to the video (all the music, none of the glitzy
chandelier camera shots to distract ya)

gaspirilla street festival, tampa, fl 2-5-00: the recording of this
performance showcases not only the girls fine music, but their strength
and stamina as well! who'd-a thunk that a&e would be in danger of
losing their valuable fingers to frostbite at an outdoor concert in
florida (even if it was february!)?  brrr....

paperviewed: a 2 disc compilation from the 6-6-97(?) concert that was
broadcast live from greats woods, along with tracks from a lilith
fair '97 appearance

original indigo: 2 disc compilation of songs covered by ig, sung by the
original artists

color me grey plus: fresh from janet doe and pbr- this disc includes
all of amy's first solo album as well as the contents of the
infamous 'study hall boot' (very early a&e together, before they were
ig, recorded during mr. lloyd's class 11-81)

basically, this offer is comprised of a spectacular variety of material
which spans the length of igs musical careers.
however, at this point, i am only seeking volunteers who are willing
and able to be branches for this tree!! if you are interested in
serving in this capacity, please email me (mrowan@gmu.edu) to work out
the logistics.  please do not respond yet if you are not able to burn
copies for other people, you'll only hinder the distribution process! i
promise as soon as the branches are ready for action, the tree will be
announced and distribution to all those interested in participating
will follow! just not quite yet- please only contact me about getting
involved right now if you wanna be a branch!!
finally, i'm always available to answer questions regarding content or
the like. however, please, direct yer questions to moi, not the list,
and not neil, who has already toiled long and hard putting this
altogether so let's try and give him a break now, k? i'm the designated
mouthpiece/organizer, and promise to get back to you w/an answer if i
can. the cover art will be available soon @ eclectic indigo, some of
which you can preview at the following site:

thanks! i look forward to hearing from you-

holy crap!!

i think i was at that appearance. if so, it was their appearance in dec.
1990 at the now defunct rebop records in ithaca, ny. they were playing
cornell that night. i had scored front row seats and went to the
appearance/record signing. it was too cool. is this an official video or a
bootleg or what? i'm dying to know if it is indeed the same appearance i was
at.

btw, i'm new to the list. my name is tom and i've been an ig fan since i saw
them open for neil young in 1989. i live in asbury park nj and saw their
show there about two years ago. excellent show.

aside from the girls, i'm a big fan of tori amos, stevie nicks, dave
matthews, and bob dylan.

ok, relurking.

depends.. if the video was shot from amy's side, it was probably from cheap
thrills records in new brunswick, nj on 1 dec 1990 ( i was at that one, and got
the video from the guy who taped it).  i think emily was wearing a blue/green
shirt, and maybe amy was wearing a jacket?  been a while since i have watched
the video.

i think it probably is the new brunswick, nj in store because it is shot
from amy's side (with one extreme close up of amy during lotcp singing with
her eyes closed - i know, big shock!), amy is definetely wearing a jacket
and i think emily's wearing a blue/green shirt.  they were late showing up

hmmm. let me see.....i have so many favorite moments on video it's hard
to choose.  i do miss that austin city limits appearance......it's
the only time i've heard them do no expectations!  and amy's eyes were
so intense
during jonas and ezekiel.... and i loved her shorts! (they were part
upside down flag!)

that was one of the first times i saw them on tv and i was a nanci
griffith fan at the time so
i was watching because of her not ig.

on watershed, i enjoyed watching amy blush, when they were playing pool
and for the camera emily asked,"how many strings have you broken?"(in
the ten years they'd been together.) amy laughed,"what kind of question
is that?"

for favorite video? i would gve anything to see the videos they've done
since watershed.  i liked the galileo video, because they look like
they're having fun.

hey all,
in galileo, i love it when one of them jokingly nudges the other out of
the camera's view and then they throw their arms over each other's shoulder.
they talk about the space they give each other on the road and off, but this
moment reminds me of how close they are and what a beautiful thing their
friendship/music collaboration must be to them and has been for all of us to
share in.
in a non-camera moment, last june my husband and i drove up to iowa to
catch two ig shows for my 30th birthday. it was the best time...we got to
meet them both and i didn't know it at the time but i was pregnant with our
first child, a daughter who was born in february. she was a preemie and had
a lot of other problems and spent about a month in the. i sang to her and
played music throughout the pregnancy and while she was hospitalized,
including a lot of ig. i'll never forget the first night we had her home
when she was crying and i rocked her and started singing power of two. she
stopped crying and looked at me and it was the most beautiful moment. she's
4 months now and doing really well...she loves all music but seems to have a
special fondness for ig, especially least complicated and the slower songs i
sing to her for a lullaby.i can't wait to take trecie to her first ig show

two guest appearances instantly come to mind....

while promoting sos, ig made an appearance on the rosie o'donnell show a couple of years ago.  at the time (and she may still have it...) rosie had this device that had a whole bunch of buttons linked to a certain sound bite or song, so she could select whatever audio she needed directly from her desk.  when amy and emily came over to do the guest on a talk show thing and chat with rosie right after performing shame on you, rosie was so excited she could barely talk - gushing over how much she loved the girls and how she had every album, etc. ...  to prove it, she punched a button and immediately, "love will come to you" (or another one of those emily types of songs) starts playing and rosie starts singing along to the recording.  emily, not believing it looks over at whatever control panel rosie has and while being egged on by rosie, selects another button, then another, all the time, rosie singing along with every single song - even appears to know all the words...  both amy!
& emily got a kick out of it and could not believe that rosie would have such an extensive collection!

the other appearance was on the today show just before the swamp ophelia release.  i remember bryant gumble walking over to them to introduce a song and doing a double take when seeing amy's electric guitar.  seemingly off the cuff, he says something like - what's this?  this is not your usual choice in musical instruments?  even though i am hardly a fan of bryant gumble, i was pretty impressed that he even knew of ig much less, that their music up until then was primarily acoustic.  with that ig launched in to touch me fall.

now i wanna just go home from work and see if we even have those video tapes anymore!  have a great afternoon!

carrie

this is making me sad--i've never seen any of these appearances!  if
anyone has the capability and would be willing to do it, i would love
tapes of any of these appearances.  i would of course provide blank
tapes, and throw in some goodies (i have no boots though).  please
email me privately.

wow, lurking for a year, then two posts in a week...

hmm. i am way too obsessive about the swamp pretour of 94 - it was a very
important time for me in my ig fandom on a plethora of emotional levels. i
dont think they did today show in '94 (trust me i think i would have gone)
i think it was cnn, the day before earth fest and they cut in the middle of
a song? to my knowledge - the only time they were on the today show was
in  89 or 90 - i think they did land of canaan, i remember seeing it and
being oh cool when it was on, but didnt buy my first tape for a year or two
and didnt really get into them for a while..

ob fave ig video moment - hmm...newport 93 cuz i was there. there is a
killer boot of amy doing romeo solo someplace in new jersey in 1990 - maybe
the same boot amy putnam spoke of - i got it as lead in on an ani video i
have. i also love the disney london video, that was shot soooooooo well,
and neil hunt and various ig listee's are in it.

this coming weekend is the baltimore pride festival, and there are some
awesome acts playing.
thursday night, sonia of disappear fear and the comedienne suzanne
westenhoefer
are doing a benefit at centerstage.

saturday, the parade starts at 5:00 pm, followed by the block party, at the
corner of charles and eager.
entertainment at the block party will include sara lee (!), erstwhile
bassist for the indigo girls, gang of four, the b-52s, ani difranco, fiona
apple, and everyone else under the sun, who is now touting her solo album on
righteous babe. i have been conned into stage managing the block party, but
i'm very excited about meeting sara. and i've been promised that i will be
done with my duties before the drag extravaganza finale, which is good,
because stage managing drag queens is one of the most terrifying experiences
ever, and not one that i'd like to repeat.

sunday at the festival, in druid hill park, there will be a zillion cool
performers, including doria roberts, ellen rosner, greg greenway, and of
course, my band...contrary to all of the misprinted promo stuff, the
festival does *not* end at 5 pm, it ends at 7 pm. we are the final act, at
6:30 pm (hehe...they couldn't get the b-52s, so they asked us to
headline..). thursday's baltimore sun will have a big article on all the
goings-on, in the live section, online and in print, if you want more
details...

i don't think they have and 72% of this "highly scientific sample"
seems to agree....

about a month ago robert siegel of npr's all things considered did a
great interview with the creator of jumptheshark.com.  its site where
people comment on that certain moment you know that something that
you +really+ liked or respected will never achieve that level again.
at that moment its "jumped the shark"

for those of you old enough *sigh* the name comes from an episode of
happy days.  the cunningham family takes a vacation to southern
california and fonzie is challenged by a gang of surfers to take a
waterski jump over a shark in a holding pen.  there is one classic
image of the fonz, clad in the motorcycle jacket and waterski life
preserver belt, cruising behind an outboard, looking oh so intense.
at that point, the series might as well have been over.  not to
mention, i believe they flashed up "to be continued" as fonzie was in
mid air.  literally an architype.

it's a great site for killing a little time.  check it out!

news from the
human rights campaign

919 18th street, nw, suite 800
washington, dc 20006
email: hrc@hrc.org
http://www.hrc.org
________________________________________________________
for immediate release
wednesday, june 13, 2001

hrc calls for a nationwide boycott of exxonmobil

cites oil giant's refusal to reinstate written policy against sexual
orientation discrimination, domestic partner benefits

washington - the human rights campaign called today for a nationwide
boycott
of exxonmobil because of the company's continued refusal to reinstate a
written non-discrimination policy covering sexual orientation and to
open
its domestic partner benefits program to all gay and lesbian employees.
"exxonmobil has stubbornly refused to treat its gay and lesbian
employees
fairly and has exhibited unusually antagonistic behavior toward those
who
have asked the corporation to make  reasonable changes," said hrc
executive
director elizabeth birch. "a boycott may be a drastic action, but it is
commensurate with the company's actions, which are unique in u.s.
business.
our efforts to work this out with company officials have been met with
resistance. as the largest corporation in the world, exxonmobil should
be a
leader in fairness. instead, it has become the leading proponent of
stonewalling gay and lesbian employees, consumers and shareholders."
hrc is asking all fair-minded americans to:
*       stop patronizing exxon or mobil gas stations and their on the
run
convenience stores;
*       cut up their exxonmobil gasoline credit cards and mobil
"speedpasses" and send half to exxonmobil and half to the human rights
campaign;
*       write or e-mail exxonmobil, with a copy to hrc, expressing their
displeasure with the company's treatment of gay and lesbian employees,
customers and shareholders;
*       send to hrc one month's worth of receipts for gasoline purchased
from companies with policies aimed at treating gay and lesbian employees
more equally.
hrc is also asking people who already have exxonmobil stock to keep it
and
pledge to vote next year in favor of an anticipated shareholder
resolution
asking the company to add the words "sexual orientation" to its written
non-discrimination policy.
the human rights campaign launched a website today,
www.equalityatexxon.org,
where consumers can get information on the boycott and obtain addresses
for
exxonmobil executives.
in december 1999 when exxon merged with mobil, it became the
first
u.s. employer ever to rescind a non-discrimination policy covering
sexual
orientation. at the same time, executives closed mobil's domestic
partner
benefits program to any additional employees.
since then, hrc and its coalition partners have worked to
reverse
these actions, to no avail.
in 2001, hrc co-filed a shareholder resolution with the new york city
employees retirement system, the equality project and several others
asking
exxonmobil to reinstate a written policy barring discrimination based on
sexual orientation. hrc education director kim i. mills attended the
meeting
may 30 and spoke in support of the resolution. the measure garnered 13
percent of the vote, a 75 percent increase over 2000 and the highest
percentage of any shareholder resolution on the ballot.
at a news conference after a recent exxonmobil shareholder
meeting,
chief executive officer lee r. raymond was asked by a dallas voice
reporter
why the company doesn't actively reach out to gays and lesbians as it
does
to other minorities.  "we don't want to know [who they are]," he
replied.
"that's the whole point of the policy."
"exxonmobil is out of step with most other corporations,
including
many of its competitors,," said birch. "we are at a loss to explain why
this
company wants to risk losing valuable employees who want only access to
equal benefits and a written assurance that they are valued and
protected
from unfair treatment."
exxonmobil competitors chevron, sunoco, atlantic richfield, bp
amoco, shell and texaco explicitly prohibit discrimination based on
sexual
orientation; bp amoco, chevron and shell also offer domestic partner
benefits.
a total of 76 of the fortune 100 have written
non-discrimination
policies covering sexual orientation; more than 50 percent of the
fortune
500 - 258 as of today - already have such policies. more than 3,700 u.s.
employers offer domestic partner benefits, including 127 of the fortune
500.
the human rights campaign is the largest national lesbian and
gay
political organization with members throughout the country.  it
effectively
lobbies congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to
ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender americans can be
open,
honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

my favorite video  is  hammer & nail , i think they look like they are
really enjoying what they are doing! and i think my favorite ig moment on
video is when they are standing backstage at red rocks , getting ready to go
on  and emily joking says(para phrase of course) to amy, i hate you , where
are my drugs? when i saw that it made me laugh
i think it's pretty cool that they mock the whole "rock stars" lifestyle......

i can't decide on my fave video.  tmf is great for art's sake, galileo is
fun and joking is cute.

my fave video moment?  thats tricky.  maybe gotm that i taped off cnn for
music, cuz they are backwards sitting and they are weirdly expressive to the
camera.

i like that "where are my drugs" business in watershed too.

i would have to agree with my friend janet (hi sista!) on
my favorite moment - the part where the girls are going
on stage and amy says "i'm sick of you" and emily says
"where are my drugs".  the other one is when emily is talking
about watching videos while riding the life cycle and she says
"it's like brain candy" and amy cracks up over it.

my favorite video is galileo - that has to be one of the funniest
video's i've ever seen - and they looked like they had so much
fun doing it.  i've never seen austin city limits before, but i'm
sure someone i know has a copy so i'll have to take a peek.

happy thursday

i saw her in san francisco the night before i saw amy at slim's and i asked her after her show if she knew that amy was also performing in sf that same night. she made a funny face and said that they had even asked her to go to the concert (she couldn't because of the timing) but that she "wouldn't say what she did if it wasn't true". it didn't seem like bad blood, just a comedy routine.

basically she says that ig kicked everyone out of the community tent at the michigan festival to have it all to themselves. i'm sure that everyone did get kicked out, but i'm guessing that it was someone else's idea and not amy and emily's. they might have not even known about it.

        hey folksters -
i'm really liking this video thread... i haven't seen all too many
of the clips that people are naming, and this is inspiring me to track
them down. my own favorite is from watershed, toward the end in the
"fashion section" (the portion that begins with sara lee making fun of amy
and emily's sense of style) when emily, having just destroyed a tube of
lipstick, says "i aim to please the girlies." heehee.
here's another thing i've been turning over in my head, for
whatever it's worth: i noticed awhile ago that a lot of ig songs travel in
pairs, thematically, as though amy and emily were mulling over the same
ideas or concepts during the period of time in which they were writing
songs for a given album. although the songs themselves are usualyl pretty
different, the initial ideas are similar, and i find it interesting that
similar seeds could yield such different flowers.
to wit: swamp ophelia has one song from each of them about
childhood and its lasting impact on their adult lives. emily's song is
least complicated, and amy's is dead man's hill. rop has two tributes to
beloved and respected authors: three hits and virginia woolf. i figured
out some more, once, but i can't recall them now, and i'm sure there are
others that i didn't see. can anybody else think of other pairs? i just
think they're so interesting....

        mandy

i am only one; but still i am one.
                i cannot do everything,
but still i can do something.
i will not refuse to do the something i can do.

  from yahoo!
  http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010614/ts/congress_education.html

thursday june 14 3:46 pm et
  boy scout education amendment passes
by greg toppo, ap education writer

washington (ap) - the senate voted narrowly thursday to withhold federal
funds from school districts that deny use of their facilities to the boy
scouts because of the organization's exclusion of homosexuals.

within minutes of the 51-49 roll call, opponents launched an effort to
negate the vote, but their prospects were uncertain.

the fast-paced developments came on an amendment by sen. jesse helms
(news - bio - voting record), r-n.c., to president bush (news - web
sites)'s education legislation. democrats said they were hoping for final
passage of the package by day's end - regardless of the outcome of the
controversy triggered by a supreme court ruling last year that upheld a
national boy scouts policy banning gay members and leaders.

the house approved an amendment last month similar to helms'.

michael resnick, associate executive director of the national school
boards association, said the measure means school districts could lose
the right to decide who uses their facilities.

''now we have a piece of legislation in which the congress is dictating
to school districts and school principals all across the united states
which groups should have access to their campus,'' he said. ''that should
be a locally determined decision. this is congressional micromanagement
  at its worst.''

helms said his amendment was meant to combat ''the organized lesbians and
homosexuals in this country of ours.'' democrats angrily denounced it,
saying it would bind the hands of school boards trying to juggle access
and scout sponsorship with their states' anti-discrimination laws.

''think of the situation we are creating here,'' said sen. richard durbin
(news - bio - voting record), d-ill. ''imagine sitting on a school board,
with no pay, under these circumstances. ... i have to tell you: as i
consider this amendment, it is a complete disaster.''

the vote came after several hours of debate over the boy scouts' mission
and history, complete with senators on both sides of the aisle fondly
recalling their scouting days. several republicans stood to read or
  recite the boy scout oath.

''i have never been prouder in my entire political life than i am to
stand here today with senator jesse helms and support this amendment,''
  said sen. bob smith, r-n.h.

democrats spoke in bitter opposition to the amendment, saying it was
redundant in light of the supreme court's access ruling.

''i believe this amendment is unnecessarily gratuitous,'' said sen.
barbara boxer (news - bio - voting record), d-calif. ''it's hurtful to a
group of people - it divides us again in this country.''

senate majority leader tom daschle of south dakota said the amendment
would force school districts to make ''a terrible choice.''

''they could either disregard their own conscience or they could follow
their conscience and lose millions of dollars that their schools and
their children need,'' he said. ''we believe in principled compromise,
but we cannot compromise on the fundamental issues of civil rights.''

according to boy scouts of america web site, about 3.4 million children
were enrolled as boy scouts in 2000, a 1.2 percent drop from 1999.

on a second contentious issue, the senate reversed course and voted to
require schools to discipline special education students in the same
fashion as other pupils. the action came on a voice vote, a few hours
after a 50-50 deadlock had appeared to have sent the proposal down to
  defeat.

at issue was an amendment by sen. jeff sessions (news - bio - voting
record), r-ala., that would require schools and school districts to
implement uniform discipline policies for all children, regardless of
whether they are disabled or receiving federal special educational funds.
sessions and other republicans complained that in some cases, disabled
students aren't punished as severely as others.

''if a child in a wheelchair sells dope, should they be treated any
differently than any other child who sells dope?'' he asked.

democrats said the measure would strip valuable protections from some
  disabled students.

''we're not going to march backward,'' said sen. edward kennedy (news -
bio - voting record), d-mass. ''this is a major, major retreat.''

the senate earlier thursday rejected an amendment by sen. tom harkin
(news - bio - voting record), d-iowa, that would have let schools take
the child's disability into account when determining punishment - if, for
instance, a deaf child misbehaved because he or she couldn't understand a
  lesson in class.

bush has placed education atop his legislative agenda, but democrats say
they will insist on more money for education than bush has recommended.

the senate measure, driven by democrats' spending proposals, calls for
roughly $15 billion more than bush proposed for comparable programs in
  2002.

''it is frightening how much money has been added in terms of
authorizations,'' said sen. bill frist (news - bio - voting record), r-
  tenn.

hey y'all,

ok this is probably nuts but i'm gonna try to do it anyway.  since there has
been much discussion as of late about ig video moments i'd like to try to
put a video compilation together much along the lines of the on the road to
austin video boot sundara (i think) put together a few years back.  i work
at a cable access station and have free reign with all the cool video
editing stuff.  what i'd like to do is number 1, find out if there is
interest in a project like this, and number 2 see if i can get y'all to
share any video footage you might have tucked away somewhere.  to those of
you who are willing/able to share footage, i will provide a copy of the
completed project before i tree this puppy.  if any of you have any ideas
about what you'd like to see on this video, please drop me a line!
