subject:      new boot offer + tree announcement
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

hey y'all-
i'm totally excited to announce the details of that recently mentioned
boot offer!! so, if you're interested in acquiring your copies of the
latest treasures from our resident boot-creator extraordinaire, neil
hunt, read on for more info on what, how, and where, to obtain your
boots.

(1) what: 11 discs (3 of which require 80 min/700mb discs)

original indigos- a 2-disc compilation of songs covered by ig, sung by
the original artists, or other artists who's earlier versions are often
affiliated w/particular songs.

live at the fillmore- the 2-disc complete (though unrelated) boot from
the 11-20-99 show in denver.

ppv- another 2-disc collection of material from the 6/97 pay-per-view
show from great woods in ma, combined with ig's lilith fair appearances.

***indigo guests- a 3-disc compilation of songs by other artists
w/performances by amy, emily or both. (three 80 min/700mb discs)

color me grey- the entire contents of amy's first solo album combined
w/the 'study hall boot'- a high school performance by a&e from before
they became indigo girls (and be sure to check out the respective cover
art w/pics of young amy from the shamrock high school yearbook!). a pbr
compilation.

2-5-00 gaspirilla street festival- boot of ig's outdoor show in tampa,
fl, last winter, where the weather was downright chilly, but a&e's
performance was anything but!! recording from tara lane.

(2) how:
using the list below, please contact the person designated as your
branch, determined by your birthday (w/in us) or your location (outside
us).  after receiving your message, your branch will respond w/specific
details about where to send your blanks, their particular cdr brand
preferences (if any), time constraints, etc.  if your original branch is
unable to handle your request, then contact the appropriate back-up
person, who has been specifically charged w/alleviating overflow.

as a leaf, you should be prepared to send 11 blank discs (3 of which
must be 80 min/700 mb) as well as a package w/postage (or the $
equivalent) and your return address to your branch (more info on
shipping below). your branch will then burn your copies and send them
back to you. you will also need to download and print your own cover art
(instructions to follow in a separate message) from:
http://go.to/neilytones
and that's it. nothing else is required, but do remember that your
branches have *volunteered* their time and energy to facilitate the
distribution of these boots, so please feel free to enclose any extra
little tokens of appreciation b/c without these fabulous folks (and
neil, above-mentioned boot guru) listed below, this tree would not be
possible!!

(3) where: (the tree)

jan/feb:  elle mckay - elle.mckaydemont@wausau.com
march/april:  dave murray - murdog2@hotmail.com
may/june:  mi rinda kovacs - mirinda.kovacs@westgroup.com
july:  karen asiu - kla@aloha.net
august:  ryan blackhawke - hawke210@home.com   (away from 7/19 -7/31)
september:  jude hunter - hunterj1@aol.com
october:  kristi henson - krishensn@aol.com
november:  chad west - chadwest@mac.com
december:  cathy casey - foxtrot4170@aol.com

back-ups-
jan-june:  dee yellowlees - tomboy1969@excite.com
july-dec:  melissa anderson - melissa@u.washington.edu

canadians:  lesley stubbs ljstubbs@sympatico.ca
outside of us + canada:  marian rowan (me) mrowan@gmu.edu (away from
7/16 - 7/27)

(4) shipping
obviously it is much cheaper and easier to ship discs w/out their jewel
cases, and there is a wide variety of less bulky alternatives.  one
thing that really works well for these "monster" boot deals is those
plastic cd booklets- vinyl booklets that hold 15 or 20 discs. they
really protect the cdrs and they don't weigh much. if you do decide to
enclose jewel cases, please make sure they are unwrapped!!! thanks. :)

(5) a final request:
when you respond to this offer, please direct any questions to me or
replies to your branch, offlist. i will be away from 7/16 - 7/27,
w/intermittent email access. so, i promise to answer as quickly as i
can, but your patience is much appreciated!!

thanks very much! enjoy the music-
marian

subject:      jude's fabulously thorough directions for getting and printing
              liners
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

ok, here are the instructions for getting a graphic off the web and onto
your hard drive so you can print it in word. if you don't have microsoft
word, we'll talk about it later.

i am on aol so i can only speak from that particular mega experience so
here goes. you might want to print out these directions because the trip
will take you on and off the web and into your hard drive.

while you are here on the web, go to neil's site:
http://go.to/neilytones

if you get a script error right away, just click the x in the upper
right hand corner and close that dude :)

you will be on neil's purple chick page so scroll down to the bottom of
this page and take note of the i agree proceed statement. click it.

you will next see all manner of stuff listed that neil has made
available. just for practice, i am going to download the cover art for
killer bees vol 5.

double click the line that begins with pc-14. you will then see the
artwork. (it takes a while since it is a big file). notice by scrolling
down that neil has given you a choice of a booklet style liner and a
traditional liner that fits in the back of a plastic jewel case. the
booklet style liner (one rectangle that folds in half) is meant to fit
in the front of a plastic jewel case and works well with the newer slim
jewel cases that just hold the cdr and nothing else. i much prefer the
slim jewel case as it is lighter to mail and easier to store.

position your cursor over the type of liner you prefer and click the
right mouse button. hopefully you will see a grey menu appear. go to
'save picture as' in the menu and click on it. you will get a dialogue
box showing your hard drive. you must now tell the program where you
want the picture stored. i suggest you click on the yellow up arrow
until you see the c: drive. or you can store them in a folder if you are
cool with that.

important: at the bottom of the dialogue box there are two rectangular
spaces for file name and file type. you can change the file name of the
picture to anything you want or would find easy to recognize. i'm
changing mine to
killer_5.

in the file type rectangular space, click on the down arrow until you
find another type of picture beside art. this art extention is a web
thing and you need to save your picture as a bmp or jpg if you can (jpg
is preferrable since it is smaller, but bmp will do). remember to do
this or you are screwed. =) (ha, i have always wanted to write that in a
user's guide :)

so when you have the name in there that you want to call the file and
you have changed art to bmp or jpg, click on save.

ok, now you can get out of the internet and out of your browser. click
on and open word.

the top tool bar row of word (left to right) reads file edit view insert
.....
click on insert. in this menu, go down to picture and when you put your
cursor on picture you get another menu opening up to the right side. go
to from file and click on it.

at this point, you have to find the killer_5 file that you downloaded
from  neil's webpage. if you saved it on the main c:\, click on that
yellow folder with the up arrow until you see the c: \

scroll down until you get to the name of your picture that you
downloaded (mine is killer_5) and double click on it. the picture should
appear in your word document.

congratulations. print it.

jude :)

i posted for the first time the other day, and now i can't stop my damn self!
since i'm on the "digest" version, this may be old news by the time you read
it. but just in case, here's the set list from tonight's concert in salt lake
city at lovely red butte gardens.

gone  again
devotion
ghost
faye tucker
power of two
new song by amy: "broken" (?? not sure of the actual title)
new song by emily: "deconstruction of love" (this one had me bawling--can't
wait    for fall for the new "folk" album!)
closer to fine (with someone from the audience called "jim"--it was his 39th
b-day)
shame on you
get out the map
new song by amy: "starkville"  (great--powerful lyrics such as "haunted by
geography and the flora and fauna of your heart")
lucystoners (yep-she's doing something from "stag")
new song by emily: i'm going to call it "she's saving me" ?? (very pretty!)
chicken man
that song with rose polenzani where they sing three-part harmony (my friend
says    it's called "so..." but i don't necessarily believe him)

*at this point, they informed us that there were four songs left, and that
there would be no encore, as it always seemed so silly and forced

least complicated
land of canaan
philosophy of loss
galileo

*true to their word, no encore--but then again, it did last 1:50, which is 20
minutes longer than usual

wonderful show, as always!  and it was so exciting to hear some of their new
stuff.  i was trying to jot down some of the resonating lyrics, but it was
too much, too fast, and i don't have the gift of shorthand.  but these are
close approximations:

"as for the truth, we just pick a theory that fits with our daily lives" and
"we're sculpted from youth but keep chipping away at the cracks" (these are
from "deconstruction of love"--forgive me, emily, for any injustices)

and in "she's saving me" or whatever it's really called, she says "it feels
like ____ (no fear?), it feels like no doubt, it feels like inside out, like
ashes being stirred"--that may not be quite right, but trust me, it was
gorgeous!

oh well, i'll be seeing them again next month in northampton, ma, so i'll get
another listen.  in fact, i think i may make my first attempt at booting the
show.  i simply cannot wait until the cd comes out!  (i don't suppose anyone
booted the show tonight or from the first few shows?  if so, i'd love a copy!
please e-mail me privately.  thanks!)

ok, this turned out to be way longer than i had intended, but i hope you
enjoyed the tidbits nonetheless.  --gina

ok, i'm getting kinda worried here. i have this one 12th row center
ticket for the san diego show on 7/30. no one anywhere (ig bbs, here,
craigslist) seems to have any interest in buying it at all. i paid
$46.25 but honestly, at this point, i just want to see someone use it.

so... would any kind soul be willing to try and sell it for me at the
show? i would send you the ticket and then if you sold it, you could
forward back some of the $$$?

please?

it's a great seat, and i don't want to waste it!!!!

thanks in advance -
amy

this is the setlist as they had it written on their official set lists at
the denver botanic gardens.  the did play more songs than this, but i
wasn't keeping track:

least complicated
three hits
wood song
devotion
get out the map
starkville
power of two
"amy ray solo" (i think she played chiapas bound right here).
same as it (or maybe it says "same as 1+")
gone again
"emily solo" (pretty sure this was philosophy of loss).
shame on you
cold beer & remote
yield
closer to fine
kid fears
she's saving me
"?"
galileo

at the lodo music fest, amy did johnny rotten.  they also did go and lucy
stoners and chickenman.  sorry, i'm not too good at keeping track.  :)

yes, there sure is!  if you can't get ahold of a copy, go to curve's
web site for a snipet of the article and pics.  my favorite part is
melissa's comment, "at times, i'd look up and see her rocking out,
and i'd be like, 'holy shit, amy ray is jamming in my basement'"
gotta like that!
http://www.curvemagazine.com/

it would have been nice to see amy's stag cd included in this issue.
a few months ago, curve only wrote a small mention about it.  it was
nice, however, to see that mle didn't make the cover eventhough
there's a lengthy article inside about her.  the butchies are very
deserving of the cover!

i don't know if this has been posted yet.  it's from the rocky mountain
news.  reprinted without permission.

mood indigo

it's togetherness for 'girls' as lodo
                            fest headliner

by mark brown, news popular music critic

chill out, people. the indigo girls
                            aren't going anywhere. they're
                            headlining the at&t lodo music
festival on saturday night (and a
                            sold-out botanic gardens show
tonight). they've got a new album that
                            they're ready to record.

and emily saliers says the other things
going on in their lives don't mean that
she and amy ray aren't going to
                            continue to work together.

they know why you're confused; the
                            recent retrospective, the remastering
of their back catalog, the dvd and side
solo projects left fans worried that the
                            duo was breaking up.

"people are a little bit afraid of
                            change, generally speaking. we've
worked together for 20 years, and
we're still going strong," saliers says.
"the thought never crossed our mind
that this meant the end of us. the
more the individual does to strengthen
herself, the better it is for the whole."

besides, she says, "i prefer playing with
amy much more than
being solo. i can't write the music she
does. i really enjoy adding
to her songs and the unbridled passion that
comes out in her
work. i'm a little more cerebral, so i enjoy
the dichotomy. it's like
                            having two musical lives."

and the two are thrilled to be kicking off
yet another tour here in
denver, a city that has helped put them on
the musical map.

the connection with colorado has always been
strong. live tracks
from red rocks have appeared on the album
1200 curfews.
kbco was one of the first big supporters of
the indigo girls, and
more importantly, continues to play their
new music after other
stations fell away. and their dvd released
last year, live at the
fillmore, was filmed at the fillmore
auditorium in denver, not the
one in san francisco. it's the first
commercial release to come out
                            of that venue.

"there's no doubt that denver has been one
of our strongest
bases of support in the country," saliers
says. "getting radio
support (elsewhere) is very difficult. a lot
of women are being
squished out of playlists. we have many fond
memories of nights
at red rocks and just good associations with
the area. it's a joy
                            to play here."

which is why they chose the fillmore to make
the dvd in late '99.

"it's great," saliers says of the fillmore.
"it's like a club but it's not
nasty, you know? clubs are great too; don't
get me wrong. but
you have that intense energy that people get
when they stand.
                            it's a beautiful place."

the gigs today and at the lodo festival on
saturday will see ray
and saliers without a band, just with two
acoustic guitars. expect
hits, expect album cuts, expect new,
unreleased songs, and
expect the usual cover songs. in the past
they've tackled
everything from elton john's mona lisas and

mad hatters to neil
                            young's down by the river.

the next record will be much the same as the
show; the girls have
decided to make a more acoustic, folk-based
album after several
discs of harder-edged rock. they plan to go
straight into the
                            studio off of this tour.

                            "it's a contradiction because (touring)
tires your voice, but
seasons it," saliers says. "we're going to
be playing new songs
this tour, so we'll work those in. you just
feel like it's not such a
shock when you get in and start recording,
especially when you've
been playing the songs. it's just going to
be more like a live,
                            stripped-down feel to it."

they decided it was time for such an album
after going through
their back catalog, helping epic records
re-release it in upgraded
                            sound.

"we had mixed feelings about that," saliers
says of the
                            remastered catalog. "the record company
really wanted to do it.
and there is some marketing involved. it's a
chance to reintroduce
our work for the public. you can't lay
dormant for your whole
career. you've got to do things to keep in
people's memories. we
like to be sure we're keeping it out there."

and while marketing is fine, saliers says,
they also have strict
rules about what they won't do.

"we have a staunch philosophy to not do
commercials," she says.
"we've turned down a lot of money. it
(seeing other artists do
commercials) just makes me sick. it ruins it
forever for me to hear
an artist whose work i admire selling soda
or whatever."

while the girls have never played lodo
before, they thrive on the
communal vibes that festivals have. saliers
is still part owner of
the watershed, a restaurant in her hometown
of decatur, ga.

"i love good food, good wine. i love a
mom-and-pop,
                            community-based restaurant," she says. "it's
just been very
gratifying creating something like that. i
walk in there and people
are eating and having a good time and
relaxing. i enjoy that. it's
a wonderful way to bring people together."

hi all,

when concert dates were being released, i felt certain if i just waited, a
new york date would come through.  well, of course i was wrong, so now i am
trying to find tickets for a show nearby.  if anyone has 2 tickets available
for the northampton show, i would be so appreciative.

thanks,
wendi

hey y'all,

just back from the vancouver show.  rose polenzani opened - i liked her.
here's the playlist...

1. gone again
2. the wood song (yeah!)
3. devotion (double-yeah!)
4. ghost
5. faye tucker
6. ?deconstruction of love? - new emily song
7. shame on you
8. or - w/ rose polenzani
9. starkville - new amy song
10. get out the map
11. power of two
12. lucystoners - amy solo
13. history of us - emily solo, dedicated to her father who was in the
audience
14. ?take some time? - new amy song
15. virginia woolf
16. reunion
17. she's saving me - new emily song
18. ozilline
19. closer to fine
-- encore --
20. kid fears
21. galileo

both girls sounded in pretty good voice, although i think the sound in the
venue
could definitely have been way better.  when they were both playing fast and
loud you couldn't really hear the vocals, and quite a few times when they were
both singing you couldn't really hear the harmonies either.  but for most of
the show it wasn't too bad.  the audience was good - there was lots of singing
along and we even had an impromptu "where are they now" session (jerry
marotta's
producing other artists and still playing the drums, and sara lee of course
has
a new solo album).  emily mentioned that clare kenny and carol isaacs will
probably be playing on the new album, which starts recording in september.

i really like the new songs (especially "starkville") and am looking
forward to
the album.  amy messed up quite a few times including in "devotion" and
"reunion" - i guess she's still getting back into the duo headspace after
doing
the solo thing.  she kept apologising for screwing up - i think she felt worse
about it than any of us did.  there were also a bunch of requests - after "hey
kind friend" was requested amy also apologised that they didn't learn that one
for this part of the tour...

we got an encore because apparently nobody told vancouver that "closer to
fine"
no longer means the end of the show.  after ctf everybody was clapping and
cheering like it was all over, the guitar tech (chad) came out with the next
pair of guitars, and a&e looked at us, then sent him off and walked offstage
for an unplanned encore break.  hee!

that's it i think.  hopefully someone else will have more to add.  we didn'treturn-path: <>

ani difranco cancels letterman over song
wednesday july 18, 2001 @ 06:00 pm
by: chartattack.com staff

ani difranco, who was scheduled to perform on the late show with david
letterman on july 19, has opted to back out of the gig after being told she
couldn’t perform the song "subdivision," one of the highly political tracks
on her new album revelling/reckoning.

"subdivision," a song about racism and racial tension in urban america and
its devastating effects, begins "white people are so scared of black people…"
this line in itself was probably just enough to have letterman
representatives insisting that she play the song "heartbreak even," something
they consider more "upbeat." difranco, having the choice between submission
and not playing at all, chose not to play.

okay, folks i'm just in a mood to find a creative way to say, i think
ani rocks for her stand.  so if you want .....here  it is.

are you  one of those who are tired of hearing the truth, do you find
yourself watching the 10:00 news goig "yeah that's fluff i could relate

movies..."

at censorship productions we live to promote
fluff, by silencing  politically  outspoken musicians....we proudly join
the ranks of programs known to have censored such trouble-makers like
pete seeger, and the rolling  stones , but let's come upto date,

wow.. im blown away.. i want to think of the right words to say how the
concert was.. but forget it.. i'll leave that to amy and emily to do the
poetry :) here's the setlist (not in particular order, but i'll try) forgive
the spelling...

least complicated
devotion
watershed (i know) : )~~~~
gone again
andy
chickenman (with some awesome emily solos and an added hootenany song towards
the end shoved in... something about "i'm lonely.. are you lonely too")
awesome!!
closer to fine
starkville (new song)
deconstruction of love (new song)
let me stop here and stuff i love these two new songs.. very aucoustic
and gorgeous
ozilline
power of two
jonney rottentail
philosophy of loss (emily gave an incredible speach before this about the
church)
kid fears
"or" with rose polenzani
shame on you
get out the map
a new amy song here... lyrics something like "your so self spoken" with her
on mandilin and emily on aucoustic guitar.. this song rocks my fav of   the
night
they said here that they werent doing the encore thing and would just
keep on playing
she's saving me (new emily song.. ballad.. beautiful)
cold beer
land of canaan
gallileo

i hope i didnt forget anything.. it was just packed with energy.. people
singing.. the girls said it was the best show for them so far.. they were so
talkiative.. and smiling.. and sounder incredible!! after starkville.. all
the people that were on the sides of the venue rushed to the front of the
stage.. this is realy hard to describe in writing.. anywayz.. basically we
were all screaming from the sides casue they block off the sides so the
people in the middle on seats are still in the front or something.. ahhh
anyway.. we were on the sides yelling at amy.. and she finally heard us and
kinda egged us on to rush up front.. and when we all did.. mass people came
rushing up.. it was great and the girls loved it.. ahh i hope this all made
sense.. the girls are so on fire.. ahh i cant wait for the new album.. cant
wait!!
hope you all get to see them.. im going back tomorrow night..

barb proclaimed:
<< at censorship productions we live to promote
fluff, by silencing  politically  outspoken musicians....we proudly join
the ranks of programs known to have censored such trouble-makers like
pete seeger, and the rolling  stones , but let's come upto date,

we relent that we didn't get the chance to censor ani difranco, but we

something that really needs attention .....teling the truth. >>

addendum: "unless, of course, they gain some sort of legitimacy by being

troublemaker, like those we tried to censor in the past, or a troublemaking
icon we're dying to have on tv someday too, like bruce springsteen."
turning serious, we folkies should mourn the sad passing of joan baez's
sister, mimi farina:
<< san francisco (reuters) - singer and social activist mimi farina, who with
her sister and fellow singer joan baez was a member of ''folk royalty'' in
the 1960s but left behind a music career to devote herself to charitable
work, died of cancer on wednesday at her home in marin county, california.
she was 56.
farina recorded several hits in the 1960s both as a solo artist and with
her husband, richard farina, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in
1966.
she was best known in the san francisco area for founding bread & roses, a
nonprofit organization launched in 1974 that brought live music and top
performers to people in jails, psychiatric wards and drug rehabilitation
centers.
''mimi filled empty souls with hope and song. she reminded prisoners that
they were human beings with names and not just numbers,'' baez said in a
statement released to the bay city news service. ''the devastation i feel
at losing her is unbearable.''
farina leaves behind her parents, albert baez and joan baez sr., as well
as her two sisters, two nephews, a niece and her partner, reporter paul
liberatore.
a public ceremony honoring farina at grace cathedral in san francisco is
scheduled for aug. 7. >>

i noticed they are doing the lodo show which is sponsored by at&t and
that gets me curious....don't they say that they're against corporate
power?

i've had that questtion ever since i saw the northwest airlines name on
one of my ig tickets last year. it's funny in a way because a
corporation (epic records) helped put them where they are now hah?

maybe in a sense that's good because they can reach more people with
their  music and politics.....it  just seems rather ironic how things
turned out.

don't get me wrong epic would have dropped them had folks like us not
bught their recordings and not gone to their shows.
oh well.

hey folks,

just a couple of things to add to ryan's seattle show
report...

> watershed (i know) : )~~~~

this was in response to the 150 requests they got for this
song at the vancouver show on tuesday night - heh. :)

> chickenman (with some awesome emily solos and an added hootenany song towards
> the end shoved in... something about "i'm lonely.. are you lonely too")

according to lifeblood this is actually an amy song - lyrics
are here:
        http://www.lifeblood.net/lyrics/athruz/mountain.html
this song was an incredible amount of fun!

> philosophy of loss (emily gave an incredible speach before this about the
> church)

... in response to the people outside with the "jesus saves!"
placards telling us all we were going to hell for our wicked
ways as we were going into the show... yipes...

>a new amy song here... lyrics something like "your so self spoken" with her
>on mandilin and emily on aucoustic guitar.. this song rocks my fav of   the
>night

i've decided that this song is called "yield".  i think
that's the last word of the last line...

> hope you all get to see them.. im going back tomorrow night..

me too!

after last night and the night before i have decided that i
suck at finding people in crowds.  (sorry, bonster, i really
did try.)  but if anybody wants to say hi at tonight's show,
look for me - i'll be getting there just before 3pm.  short,
asian, glasses, i'm  wearing light-coloured pants and a cons
shirt (the one with the same logo as the dog tags)...

whoohoo!  if tonight's show is even half as incredible as
last night's was, i can die happy. :)

i stole this, i mean got this, from the los
angeles times web site about the l.a. gay and
lesbian film festival. it was written by
veteran reviewer kevin thomas:

the festival's final weekend brings two outstanding
lesbian-themed films, lauren himmel's "treading water" (friday, directors guild of america at 9:45 p.m.) and "kissing jessica stein" (sunday, dga at 4:45 p.m.), directed by charles herman-wurmfeld and written by co-star[s]heather juergensen[and jennifer westfedlt].

in "treading water," angela redman's casey, a new england boat restorer, is happy in her work and relationship with nina (alex barrett-rosenberg), a therapist working with troubled youth.

unfortunately, casey's conservative socialite mother (annette miller) has banned nina from the elegant
family home, leaving casey torn between her love
for nina and her family. even though casey's father
(richard snee) sympathizes with her, himmel reminds
us that when it comes to families, rarely is anything easy or without pain.

"kissing jessica stein" is the smart-serious new york romantic comedy at its sharpest and most sophisticated, charting the love affair between a newspaper copy editor (jennifer westfeldt) and a hip downtown type (heather juergensen). the film is consistently witty and aware as it explores fluidity in sexual orientation.

to the right on the issue of homosexuality, even though i go to a reconciling
church, trying to change things from within.

anyway, i would appreciate reading what she said, if anyone has it.

yes, on kbco studio c, amy said, "i didn't know what else to call it, so
it's called yield."

at the lodo fest, emily introduced pol by saying, "someday the church will
stop discriminating against gay people."

at the denver botanic gardens, she said something about how she's been
"witnessing to youth groups" and that the church should accept gays and
lesbians.  it was the first time i ever heard her use the word lesbian; we
were all thrilled.

someone here asked about ig playing in
a corporate sponsored event and whether that
was against their views.

i remember when i read the tourbook that
was available during the "rites of
passage" shows, there was a paragraph
in the book that stated that ig may
play at a corporate owned venue or a
sponsored event, it does not mean that
they are in favor of or disagree with the
view of that corporation.

they also stated that they do not accept
sponsorship personally. near as i can
tell, all of this is still true.

anyway, here is a review from a salt lake
city newspaper about the ig show there:

indigo girls bring talent, personality to red
butte fans
wednesday, july 18, 2001

by dan nailen
the salt lake tribune

it's hard to imagine a better setting for the indigo girls' seemingly annual summer trip to utah than the
red butte garden amphitheater. small enough to feel intimate but big enough to hold the thousands of
fans that snaked in lines for hours before the show started, red butte provided the perfect natural accompaniment to the girls' all-acoustic,
no-band gig on sunday.

amy ray and emily saliers spent the better part of two hours trading off lead vocals on two dozen songs, reaching deep into their catalog for live
favorites like "chicken man" or "least complicated" and tossing in three or four new songs slated for a new indigo girls album later this year. it hardly matters what the girls decide to play; their fans are a rabid lot willing to go in any direction ray and saliers pursue. and when ray and saliers kick into their patented two-part harmonies, the indigo girls' appeal
is undeniable. from the set-opening "gone again," with ray on mandolin and saliers on banjo, through the closing "galileo," the girls' had the red butte crowd entranced.

it helps that the women are so personable on stage.
they chat up the crowd, take requests and genuinely enjoy the interaction with their audience, even
allowing an off-key gentleman to warble along with
them at one point.

of course, personality can only take you so far; the music is what ultimately counts, and the indigo girls become better songwriters with each album. ray
showcased her punk tendencies on "lucystoners," areturn-path: <>

cut from her 2001 solo album, "stag," and her rough-and-tumble voice was in fine form on songs like "faye tucker" and "shame on you." saliers had several highlights of her own, including "get out the map," "virginia woolf" and "power of two."

show opener rose polenzani, who has released music on ray's daemon records label, played a soft-spoken but solid solo acoustic set, highlighted by perhaps the first female-sung, acoustic-played version of
whitesnake's "here i go again."

robert downey jr did a cover of "river" for i believe an ally mcbeal
soundtrack. i thought it was pretty good especially considering i didn't
know the guy could sing. the ig version is still my hands down favorite

holly cole actually does a fantastic version of the song... it's got a
great mood to it.

hey folks,

well, it was another great night at the pier in seattle
last night.  michelle malone opened and kicked major
butt (as always).  it was nice to see her rocking out
with a band.  michelle also came out and played guitar
and harmonica and sang for a few songs during the girls'
set (marked with * below).  here's the setlist for ig:

1. get out the map*
2. devotion
3. virginia woolf
4. i don't wanna know*
5. deconstruction of love
6. faye tucker
7. power of two
8. starkville
9. closer to fine
10. gone again*
11. philosophy of loss
12. yield
13. the wood song
14. shame on you*
15. ghost
16. ?without a heart?
17. chickenman* - w/ "the mountain top" added again
18. she's saving me
19. galileo

i hadn't heard "without a heart" (if that's what it's
called) before - it's a new amy song about being a
southerner, dedicated to a man who lives near her who has
a confederate flag in his yard.  she played this solo on
one of her guitars - i think she mentioned that she's
still working on the arrangement.  this is another great
song.  i am *really* looking forward to the new album.

on gotm, michelle played guitar and emily did the
banjo/guitar switch halfway through.  last night emily
played the guitar the whole way through.  and we got a
very cool harmonica solo on "chickenman" as well.
michelle should play with them every night!  i thought
she really added a lot to the songs she played on.

the weather was absolutely perfect and the crowd was
having a lot of fun.  i think if i lived here i'd be
going to the pier every night!  what a great place to
see a show...

anyone else want to add anything?  i'm sure there's a
lot i missed...

:)

hello all-

i noticed some of you are selling wolf trap tickets. i only need one
however, so i thought i'd throw this out to see if anyone is willing to sell
(if still available).

the setlists for this short tour are way too good to pass up. i've decided
to go. i tried looking at tickets online but they are not on sale at this
time. not sure if this means its sold out.

please email privately. thanks.

dave.

they mentioned that they had gotten "tons of email" and "a lot of phone calls" about the contest.  good work, activists!

hey y'all,

this may be a bit premature, but i am asking anyway.  did anyone boot any of
the recent shows?  from what i have heard, the recent tour has been great.
i'd love to get my hands on a boot.

anyway, i'll be at saratoga 1 and 2.  who else will be there?

:-) karen (whose boyfriend is en route to britt fest to see the girls as i
type...)
