i have a question for you.....how do go about getting some excellent
bootlegging equipment for $50 and under? i don't have a computer or
anything i can connect it upto. do i just need a small recorder? like
one of those finger sized
ones that you pop a mini cassette in? i'm new to bootlegging, and am
considerring booting amy ray when she comes to first avenue.
it's very doubtful i will because i'm bringing some friends alnng and
so that might make for a little noise on a recording. but i'm
toying with the idea.

amy was talking about the mandalay bay venue thursday in saratoga, so
i'm curious about the concert and how it went. my father-in-law (a vegas

the vegas show went great as always. i think amy and emily just talk a good
game when it comes to playing vegas. i have seen them 3 times there now and
they always put on a great show and seem to enjoy it. i actually prefer to see
them there and i am not into the vegas scene at all.
they played on mandelay beach which means that everyone wore their bathing
suits and brought their towels along. one could either stand knee deep in
water in the wave pool just in front of the stage (ig were separated from the
waders by some speakers) or one could just sit back on the sand and relax.
there was a nice monsoonlike wind blowing through the palm trees to take the
edge off of the warm desert air. behind the stage were large torchlike fires
which a&e said made it feel like they were in dante's inferno. emily made a
remark about the back of the speakers that separated them from the crowd
saying "no step", like they were just going to jump on them and start jamming
and amy said "it kept them from showboatin'". emily remarked that they were
going to obey the mandelay rules, otherwise she and amy would be out there
wailing away. let's see they played marco polo with some of the people in the
pool. it was probably one of the best if not the best ig concert i have ever
seen. everyone was very relaxed and enjoying the surroundings listening to the
show with the sound of the waves in the background. they played closer to
fine, land of canaan, hammer & a nail plus watershed, galileo, chickenman,
three hits, reunion, power of two, shame on you (no banjo), get out the map,
gone again, and devotion among the ones that i can remember plus 2 new ones by
both amy and emily each that have been previously mentioned on the list. emily
said neither one of her songs has a title as of yet. i did managed to get a
decent boot of the show which i am going to learn to how to transfer to cd and
clean up and then i will offer it to the list...just give me a little time.

late bloom
i won't be a pawn
we roughed it up when we were young
i won't say "so much for that,
what do you do when it is done?"

ok i'm on digest so forgive me if anyone's already posted about anaheim :p
i really liked the sun theater except for the annoying bit about them
starting on time.... my sister and i were late (as usual) so we missed the
first song of michelle's set which was (we think) in the weeds (both our
favorite michelle song...) blah. anyway, michelle was looking very hot :) she
did three solo songs and then the band came out.... strength for two, the
edge, brand new dream (which she said was about going independent),
superball, 9 to 5 (the dolly parton song :p) and teen lament. she sounded
great and seemed to be enjoying herself :)
the gurls came on a little after 9:00 and played till 10:50. i think they had
an 11:00 curfew cause when we were leaving there was a club/rave thing going
on that was about to start and there were tons of people funneling in as we
were trying to exit.... very odd. anyway, amy and emily seemed in good
spirits even though the crowd was very noisy... lots of yelling and screaming
during songs... my sister and i were up in the front section (thanks to derek
who sent me the tickets :) and we could see pretty well.
setlist:
least complicated
3 hits
power of 2
gone again (w/ michelle)
virginia woolf
i don't wanna know (w/ michelle)
deconstruction of love
shame on you (w/ michelle)
get out the map
starkville
watershed
yield
em solo: philosophy of loss (w/ a bit about organized religion and nature :)
faye tucker (by request)
closer to fine
kid fears
mystery
ozilline (w/ michelle)
amy solo: new song about her struggling with her southerness
she's saving me
galileo (the non-encore)
i really liked all the new songs... the new amy one was really good and went:
it took a long time to / become the thing / i am to you / and you won't /
tear it apart / without a fight / without a heart
amy said that she had a lot of southern friends that she had battles over the
flag with.
anyway, i was really surprised when they did watershed :) and i booted the
show but don't e-mail me about it now.... i'll post later after the san diego
shows :)

emily's sister, carrie, died two and a half years ago
of anorexia. i believe she weighed 70 pounds at the
time of her death. i think carrie was in her
mid-to-late twenties as well.

hi all,
i have one extra ticket for the bethlehem, pa show which i'd like to sell
for face value. i don't have all the details with me but it's a pretty good
deal because i paid for the vip membership so it's in the front section,
but i'm only asking for the ticket price itself (not the membership cost).
if you're interested let me know and i'll get all the details for you -
price (it's under $30 but i can't remember exactly what), and seat location
so you can make a final decision.
thanks all - i'm really enjoying all the stories about the shows. i can't
wait for bethlehem and northampton!

i have to respond to this:
>emily's sister, carrie, died two and a half years ago
>of anorexia. i believe she weighed 70 pounds at the
>time of her death. i think carrie was in her
>mid-to-late twenties as well.

i rarely post to this list, and i usually try to
ignore postings about carrie (saliers), but this one
really got me.
(and please, carrie (the writer of the e-mail), know
that this is not a flame towards you personally - i am
just frustrated in general at inordinate interest in,
and misinformation about, carrie's death.)
i think that carrie did struggle with anorexia, but
the cause of her death is officially listed as
"natural causes," not anorexia, or any of the other
hundred rumors that i have heard. since we can't know
the exact cause, it seems wrong to speculate, much
less offer a cause as fact. secondly, there is no way
in hell that carrie weighed 70 lbs at the time of her
death (and i can't imagine where you heard that - i've
certainly not heard it or read it anywhere). she was
taller than me, and i weigh 140 lbs. although i don't
know her exact weight, it is just not possible that
she weighed 70 lbs less than me. she was very thin,
but not so much so that you would look at her and
assume anything was wrong. let that rumor end,
please.
finally, carrie was an amazing and wonderful person,
whose untimely loss still deeply grieves her family
and friends. "she's saving me," is a beautiful song
(which does carrie's sweet spirit justice), and it's
great that emily has found a way to be open about her
own grief, and i know your and other's interest in
carrie comes from caring about emily, but carrie
deserves better than to have private information about
her life speculated on by a bunch of people that
didn't even know her, and whose interest in her is
solely because she happens to be emily's sister.
a lot of these types of e-mails appeared after
carrie's death, and they now seem to be reappearing as
the subject has come up again. i hope they stop.
they certainly serve to intensify my, and i'm sure
anyone else who was close to carrie's, sadness.
please just know that the saliers family lost their
much loved daughter and sister, and the world lost a
very special and gifted person, far, far too early,
and don't worry about the details. they're not
important, and they're really not anyone's business.
thanks for reading.

i'm sure that all of us can sympathize with this perspective. however, i
also feel that, despite strides in educating young women about eating
disorders, openness about the true costs of these afflictions can only
serve to help others who may otherwise suffer in silence. it does no good
to keep secrets and perpetuate shame about a common problem.

i really do not know if ig ever has interpreters at
their shows. however i am hard of hearing, and i went
to the slc show with a group of friends with various
degrees of hearing loss, several of whom have severe
hearing loss and we could all hear the girls very
well with our hearing aids. unless kathryn is totally
profoundly deaf i am sure she'll be able to enjoy the
girls if she brings her hearing aids. hope this helps

i dont think they provide asl intrepreters, but i wish they did, and i'm
not deaf.
asl is a beautiful language, i know a bit about it from high school (tried
to learn some basic signs, tried to get foreign language credit in college,
didnt work, but i think that changed since i went to college, which is a
good thing.)
actually, i tried for the longest time to learn "you and me of the 10,000
wars" in sign. but it would not have been accurate as asl has grammer rules
and other language issues that makes true asl really difficult - i think it
would be referred to as signed exact english, but i am *really* not sure so
if i'm wrong, tell me - i'm not trying to infer that i'm all that
knowledgeable about deaf culture.
again - i think it would be a beautiful addition to any touring band, but
ig - it would be very cool to see.
i have them with intrepreters at earth day 90 on the c-span video - maybe
the mow in 93 - earth day 2000 as well, but i think those are specific
events - again - i could imagine how lovely the intereptation would be.

i have seen them with interpreters at wolftrap and i thought it was a wonderful thing for them to do. do you think it depends on the venue at all? anyone with connections have any insight?

i wonder if it's worth a call to the venue just to say "hey there's
interest" you never know they might bring someone in.

really it probably depends on the venue.
some venues might provide interpreted performances by request. the best
policy is always to contact the venue to see how they treat interpreters.
the earth day 90 was definitely interpreted (since i know the interpreters
who did the show) but this was because it was a much larger event.
but i have over the years seen a show or two at wolf trap interpreted.
i imagine it all depends on the concert, the performer and the region you
are in. some areas have larger populations of signers and therefore venues
are used to providing services. wolf trap, being near dc (and gallaudet), is
familiar with interpreting procedure.
not all interpreters will work performance/concerts, so it is also good to
work out details way in advance. and if you are interested in seeing a group
that always is interpreted... check out sweet honey in the rock. for over 20
years they have had a member of their group who signs the performances.
(and they are truly an amazing experience for deaf and hearing alike)

regarding the last post with the lyrics and chords for "late bloom": it
works out to more-or-less the same thing, but for accuracy's sake, amy plays
these chords as barre chords -- i.e. without the capo, so the verses are:
c#min, ab, a, e (this e is a 5th string barre at the 7th fret)

it's fine to be open about diseases, and i think as a society we should
be open about a lot of things, but it's important to remember that there
is a way to talk about the disease without mentionning names especially
if it pertains to the celebrity we all know on this list. certain
listees have personal connections with ig and i thik we need to respect
that.

you need to call the venue and talk to them about
hiring an interpreter - it's not ig management that
does the hiring of the interpreter, but rather the
venue's management's responsibility to accomodate the
deaf or hard of hearing person(s). this is all part
of ada (americans with disabilities act). you should
do this at least 3 weeks in advance, though, and it's
best to do it 6 weeks in advance due to the fact that
the venue usually puts out a "bid" through sign
language interpreting agencies. in addition, the
interpreter needs time to learn the songs. it's never
been clear whether the venue pays for the fee of the
sign language interpreter or if ig's management is to
pay for the fee.
for the hard of hearing person who responded by saying
that most hard of hearing people will hear the concert
with hearing aids - true, but the trouble is, you've
probably found, is that hearing aids distort sound and
heightens the volume and intensity of the
environmental noises. all the "good" sounds you are
struggling to hear or make sense of end up getting
drowned out. this causes me to not be able to
decipher one word of a song so having that interpreter
helps you understand what the lyrics are. it's like
that with songs on albums - i don't have a clue what
is being said but i'll know that i love the melody and
will memorize the lyrics that come with the cd packet.
so, my point is, why not make it even cooler and
watch the songs while listening? it's a very cool
experience when you understand what is being said.

what it feels like for a girl
politics and recording industry evils--the indigo girls fight the good
fight
by molly brown (molly.brown@vegas.com)
when most people think of the indigo girls, they think folksy
singer-songwriters. they think it's music for chicks. they think
lilith
fair.
but amy ray--half of the duo, emily saliers being the other--is
certainly as much an edgy punk as a folkster. and nowhere was that
more apparent than on her solo album, stag, released last fall.
calling on other rockers like joan jett, kate schellenbach
(ex-luscious jackson) and josephine wiggs (ex-breeders), as well
as her back-up band, the butchies, it created quite a stir in the
music
business. stag was a full-frontal attack, which contained songs that
addressed matthew shepard's murder and paid tribute to feminists.
the most shocking moment, however, came in a slam to the hand
that helps to feed the indigo girls. when ray sang: "janny wenner,
janny wenner/ rolling stone's most fearless leader/ gave the boys
what they deserve/ but with the girls he lost his nerve," she
shell-shocked the music biz from lowly critic to mr. west coast record
producing man. the lyrics weren't so much a direct attack on rs's
founder and publisher, but confronted the record industry on the
whole.
"there's been this huge movement lately with major label artists
fighting for their rights," says ray. "it's interesting that the
artists
who've really benefited from the major labels are really celebrities.
it's a dilemma for me because i'm constantly being asked to be a
part of this group. and they're right; the major labels are out of
control. but on the other hand, it feels disingenuous. it's hard to
side with big stars because the majority
of who is fighting, their career is down. if it was going well, would
they fight it?"
no matter what anyone says about the indigo girls, they can't accuse
the ladies of hopping on the p.c.
fight-the-man bandwagon that's so popular today with the lars ulrichs
of the world. since the group's first
release in '85, the indigo girls have mixed politics with pleasing
harmonies, instead of assaulting the
status quo with loud guitars and throbbing drumbeats. issues they've
tackled include gay rights, gun
control, the environment and the music business. to put it mildly,
they've been the vocal equivalent of
speaking softly while carrying a big stick for more than two
decades--which is something not many can
claim.
the irony to all this is that the indigo girls are signed to a huge
label--epic, which is now part of sony.
and while ray and saliers consider themselves of having an indie
mindset, it's a battle all the same.
"it's hard," says ray. "the label is, of course, out for profit. but
we can work for change from the inside
out. we can never change the label's motive, but we can change how
they treat you, like what pearl jam
did. but i know it's hard for the public to buy. it's kind of like
when the baseball players went on strike."
epic hasn't been so cozy, though. signed in '88 in the midst of a
minor singer-songwriter movement with
the likes of tracy chapman and 10,000 maniacs, the label was happy to
court the duo. the indigo girls
managed to make it through hair metal, grunge and come out on the
other side of the river styx into
sugary pop hell. though they've established a fiercely loyal fan base
and stayed afloat despite lack of
radio or video exposure, the stresses were felt with the last album,
come on now social.
"come on didn't do as well," says ray. "the record company fell off
its support. the fans appreciate us
as a very focused duo--acoustically--and don't like to be drawn away
by electric guitars."
not only did that album rock more, but ray took that further with
stag. the departure led to some
disenchantment with fans, even rumors about the break-up of the indigo
girls. what ray's solo album
really was, was a welcome break from the same-old stuff.
"i've been playing with emily for over 20 years," says ray. "my strong
points are i can write certain kinds
of songs and play acoustic. she can sing really great harmonies.
sometimes i get lazy and fall back on
her abilities. i felt i had to challenge myself and grow. in any kind
of relationship, you have to break out
to bring something back."
for those disappointed with the past couple years' distractions, the
indigo girls are heading back to the
studio this fall to record what they're known for--another acoustic,
rootsy-folk album--which should be out
early in 2002. in addition to the indigo girls' own recording, ray
stays busy with her independent label,
daemon records--a small operation that signs and promotes talented,
like-minded performers. staying
immersed in the indie scene and working with fresh talent has kept ray
grounded--and it provides a
great escape from the drudgeries of the corporate rock life.
and working behind the scenes--knowing exactly how much that cd cost
to manufacture, or how much
ticket prices have been bloated--makes ray want to fight the record
machine even more so. for her,
hanging out with a punk band that charges $5 a show will always be
more appealing than sipping cristal
with celebrities.
"madonna can't look me in the face and say she needs to charge $200 a
ticket. she doesn't need
it--she's like a billionaire. i just love her, but that really bums me
out."

wouldn't this just be emily's version of "i don't know how to love him" from
the daemon release jesus christ superstar - a ressurrection (and not yvonne
elliman's recording)??

here's a brief recap on san diego show #2:
michelle opened up and rocked out :)
lots and lots of audience chatter :( (tell me again why people go to shows
to drink and just talk?)
setlist in no particular order cause i haven't done the setlist from the tape
yet....
get out the map, gone again, shame on you, mystery, ozilline, prince of
darkness (by request i think), reunion, closer to fine, starkville, she's
saving me, yield, deconstruction of love, chickenman (with the bitterroot
river verses), three hits, virginia woolf, devotion, galileo and kid fears
(the non-encores)
that's all i can remember off the top of my head :p tonight i'm assuming will
be better since i have a front row ticket (thanks to darling amy swenson :)

i got to see michelle 3 times in 3 days:
the mint in la on friday
anaheim on sat.
in my home town, santa barbara, on sunday.
life is good.
on friday the mint was more crowded than i have ever seen it and folks jumped to their feet, clapping like crazy. i got to be about 5 feet from her, having her meet my eyes and smile while she sang. dang. that woman is hotttt!
a guy was blabbing away in the corner and michelle wouldn't play "the edge" until he shut his trap. it was great.
as stated, anaheim was wonderful. didn't it start early tho? i was walking up to the door at 10 mins. to 8 (the ticket said that it started at 8) and michelle was half way through "avalon". a guy was blabbing away to his gf all through her set and then michelle told the story of having to shut the guy up the night before. bigmouth #2 shut his mouth then.
sunday wasn't good. in fact, it sucked. the pretentious folks in the very sparse audience made sure not to respond in any way beyond a polite hand clap after every song. i was the only one moving a muscle, dancing in my chair and getting dirty looks from the women across the room for doing so. so f****n' santa barbara. no encore was requested. michelle was tired from the tour and was really bummed. i talked to her briefly afterwords and she was beating herself up. it pissed me off, since she was great, as always.
i'm glad san diego was a good gig for her. and i doubt that she'll make the trip to this town again. that's fine. i'll drive to la any day of the week to see her.

for all you atlanta sade fans:
i have 4 extra tickets for the impending sade show. i have seen her
before and she is mesmerizing!
the concert is monday, august 27th at philips arena at 7:30p. an
incredible singer from savannah named india arie is opening the show.
the set of 4 seats is in section 311, row c, seats 1 to 4
total charge $237.05
i will split this into 2 sets of 2 if necessary. these are actually
pretty decent. they are stage right only 2 or 3 sections away from the
stage on the 3rd level.
the good news is they are in row c towards the front of the section and
they are aisle seats.
please consult ticketmaster for a seating chart.
i am only asking what i paid.
if interested please respond to the above addy asap.
thanks.

i've heard that it is a whole different story when they headline... any
insight as to what time would be a good time to get there etc.?
