dude. as much as i hate calling any one show my single
indigo girls concert of the year, this would be the
one i'd pick. it was a fabulous fabulous show tonight.
my concert pals and i figured out more or less what
was played (although there was one new emily song with
a title that we didn't catch). it's not in order
except for the first five and last three songs, but
until somebody does better:
hammer and a nail
gone again (or half of it, anyway - they stopped
midway because amy insisted that her mandolin was out
of tune, and hey sent the stage hand off to the
dressing room for the other one)
power of two
gone again (for real this time)
devotion
mystery
yield
new emily song (i didn't catch the title)
(here's where it gets jumbled)
johnny rottentail
watershed
ozilline
starksville
deconstruction
closer to fine
philosophy of loss
shame on you
get out the map
new amy song (can't figure out the title)
she's saving me
kid fears
virginia woolf
chickenman (with a few verses from the mountain top in
toward the end)
world falls (which amy said she was playing for her
mom, even though nobody had requested it, because
apparently her mom thinks about this song all the time
and amy figured she might be thinking about it right
now)
galileo
so yeah. it was a long show. and freaking amazing. i
promise i'll gush in more detail later on. in the
meantime, though, anybody with a copy of she's saving
me (especially if it's a boot from this wolftrap show)
could you please email me to arrange a trade? i need
that song like, um, the deserts need the rain. or
something.
oh yeah, amy also joined 1945 on stage during their
opening set to play late bloom. yeehaw.
take care, y'all -
mandy

the drive from harrisburg, pa to wolf trap was very peaceful. i had the
new train cd and the second dawson's creek soundtrack playing on my way down
the 15, and i thought, "i really hope they play virginia woolf tonight."
and then had thoughts about passing a note to emily via security or chad.
but, for whatever reason, emily read my mind. and i was happy.
walking up the hill, i saw mel and julie holding out for another pit seat.
lisa and marion were already in, and 1945 was blasting out their set. it
was my first time at wolf trap/filene center and i was very impressed with
the acoustics of the hillside amphitheatre. i mean, spac (saratoga springs,
ny) is really cool in its layout because from the lawn seats you can see the
stage. but the wood in this structure is so beautiful.
1945 and amy jammed on late bloom like mandy said. she was wearing the
striped pants and having fun, smiling and singing. they finished their set
around 8:35 or so; and the girls came on stage 20 minutes later. first
emily, in her long-sleeved navy tee, under a shirt(which she changed
part-way through the show), and blue jeans; then, amy came straggling along
with her guitar in tow. emily said hello, as did ames, and they launched
into hammer and nail.
here's the setlist (again): *gigglegoogle*
filene center, wolf trap farm park, vienna, va august 7, 2001
hammer and nail
gone again (1st verse)
power of two
gone again (full song)
devotion
mystery
yield
watershed
faye tucker
deconstruction of love
ozillene
closer to fine
kid fears
you've got to show
shame on you
get out the map
starkville
virginia woolf
johnny rottentail
she's saving me
chickenman
philosophy of loss
world falls
galileo
what happened was, in addition to being out of tune, a string on amy's
mandolin broke--into the chorus, amy goes, "i have to stop, i can't play
like this." we cheered and whooped. then she mentioned how the mandolin
was off, and emily said, "yeah, you never want to play with a mandolin and
banjo when they're not in tune." amy wrapped the loose string with her
hand, and handed the mandolin to chad. "they'll get the other one in the
dressing room. this is embarrassing. well, whatever."
emily: "we'll go on with another song in the meantime."
power of two was lover-ly like usual. and gone again was played this time
in tune and with all strings intact. after ga, amy: "we were on the west
coast for a few weeks, and it was cold. i shouldn't have said that it was
cold. we come back to a heat wave." (it was hot and sticky--at least in
the mid-90's in the early evening.) there was one lightning bug spotted on
stage trying to steal the spotlight. but, definitely fewer bugs tonight.
emily really loves that fan--it makes her farrah cut fly sexily, like those
shampoo commercials.
everyone who has retrospective loved hearing devotion live. it's such a
happy couple song. then, as emily struck the opening chords to mystery, you
could hear the approving and surprise move through the audience. people
were so quiet during the song, especially with the bridge and the last
verse. it was so appropriate, too, to have that in the last concert of the
tour--even though summer was not getting ready to give up its fight yet.
watershed: this song was great for the old fans and newer fans. there was a
long pause before amy's verse, (and i think emily prompted her) "and there's
always retrospect,..." we laughed briefly, and then enjoyed the rest of the
song. (last night, emily instead of singing, "every five years or so i look
back on my life..." she said, "every five days or so")
amy called deconstruction of love, a swaying song. and the dancing last row
of the orchestra pit, swayed on command.
faye tucker! i think i've heard it once or twice on the university tour
last year acoustically, but it was great to listen to amy jam on it, and
yell and scream, and sing in her high register. of course, i missed seeing
her little dance she does when the band goes through their irish
instrumental part and emily does her magic.
emily encouraged people to dance if they wanted to. "there's no police,"
she said, "well, there is, but just politely ask your neighbors if it is
okay to dance to this song, and all will be cool."
after deconstruction, i guess some fans were asking were sulli (their guitar
tech) was. amy said, "sulli is on tour with keb mo." and sulli runs onto
the stage em's side, and waves at the crowd--"there's sulli!" amy says.
"we're all like a family here, and speaking of family, here's a song about
my grandmother" (ozillene)
closer to fine brought everyone to their feet for some dancing and singing.
i love when they light up the crowd so amy and emily can see. kid fears
followed, with some strong michael stipe echoes from our eager voices.
emily then asked the lawn people how they were doing, and they cheered back.
amy said wistfully, "it's our last concert on this tour before we go into
the studio again."
starkville is a song that amy said she's been working on for five
years--about a town in mississippi.
for virginia woolf, emily goes, "that's the advantage of being [a musician],
you can write about anything you want." 'course, i was all teary-eyed and i
mentioned to a new friend, "that song saved my life." [flashback to chicago
suffragette sessions, where upon meeting emily, diane blurts out, "your
music saved my life."]
johnny rottentail is such a hootenanny. i love it!
amy(after she's saving me): "we've got a curfew--we are going to sing a few
more songs. we'll [sing] until the curfew." more cheers.
chad was bringing out two guitars, and amy grabbed hers and left emily on
stage to do philosophy of loss. emily: "it's a hidden track---but who
cares?" <smiles and shrugs> she said it pertained to any and all religions
that were unaccepting of gays.
their non-encore included world falls (for her mother like mandy said) and
galileo. *sigh*
they waved good-bye and said they would see us next year when their new
album was out.
the concert ended around 11pm--so 23 1/3 songs in just over two hours. that
is the longest set i've ever been to in my mere 14 total(in four years). i
met people this time who have been to 75+ (probably more like 100+)
performances.
i loitered, and sulli came down to the pit to say hi to familiar faces and
friends. i briefly thought about hugging her for jill, then i said, "nah!"
and thought, jill can do her own hugging. then, sulli, went over to the
stage and started yelling at the crew for a setlist. sulli's hair is jet
blonde (i mean platinum) and in bangs and some layers to her shoulder. she
looked incredible--happy and well-rested. (boy, she must hate our whining
while she's disassembling the sound system.) i thought i saw mascara, too.
who knows?
a very, very crowning night fit for the acoustic ig tour.
diane

when she performed as an indigo girl, amy ray seemed like nothing more
than a tofu-eatin', crystal-deodorant-wearin', harmonizin',
melodramatic-songwritin' bore. but when ray decided to kick off her new
solo album, stag (daemon), with a mandolin-twanged story about the
lynching of a "bad seed" and a gritty-guitar tirade against the rock 'n'
roll boys club, she was saved from suffering an eternity in the lilith
fair afterlife. backed by queercore rockers the butchies (who join her
on this tour), ray employs austere vocals that haunt her southern-blues
lamentations. with a fiercer growl, a bit more intensity, and a few more
drinks, she could be a spaghetti western patti smith. le tigre opens.

well, it's that time again. indigo girls are putting together a new album,
and this can only mean one thing: time for me to get back on the list. i
know you all have missed me since cons, but you can rest easy now, because
i'm back. so, on behalf of all of you, i "welcome me." (get it? i'm real
clever at 2 am...)
and i actually have something constructive to contribute! =)
at 11am, august 9 (i.e., today), vh1 will air the dramatic (ha) documentary
(double ha) "from the waist down: men, women & music -- are you a boy or a
girl?" most of it focuses on gay men, disco, glam rock, etc. then, in the
final 15 minutes, they talk about lesbians, including a relatively long, and
positive segment on ig. so set your vcrs. the whole thing was fairly
interesting, so if you've got an hour, you might as well watch the whole
thing.

hi all,
after a nearly 2 year hiatus from the list, i'm back! somehow thought with
all the changes in my life i'd be giving up ig, too...thankfully i was wrong!
so, to all who are still around... i'm happy to be back, and thanks for
being here!
found my way up to newport on sunday. when i started listening to ig, it was
emily's music that i was drawn to. later, amy's passion sucked me in. seems
like i've come full circle because i was completely mesmerized with e's new
stuff. this is where i could use some clarification.
from diane's wolf trap setlist, there are 6 songs which appear new to me.
devotion
yield
deconstruction of love - emily
you've got to show - emily? revolves around meeting someone halfway when she
counts to 3? i think this is the song i loved, & i need the lyrics.
starkville - simply sounds like an amy song title
she's saving me
so, here's what i'm looking for:
1) set me straight on which new songs are a's or e's? - - i feel so flipping
wet behind the ears asking this, but i'm amongst friends, right?
2) looking for lyrics for the new stuff, because i was fascinated.
3) i got up on the list a little late this week, so if there's a newport
setlist floating around, will someone point it my way?
any/all help is appreciated! private e-mail responses would save folks from
getting stuff they already have read, but if you've got overall comments, let
'em rip.
take it easy.

funny - all the messages about people coming back to the list. hi
everybody <waving frantically>. i too am back after a 6 month hiatus
from the list. i think i was ig-ed out for a while - yeah yeah, i
know, but it does happen sometimes.
if anyone saved any reviews from the wolftrap show and could forward
them to me privately, i'd greatly appreciate it. i too, thought it was
a really great show - i've always loved hearing them sans band, and
just getting to hear watershed after not hearing it live for so long,
was a real treat. something must really be affecting me too though,
because i found myself boo-hooing through the whole show - i mean god -
emily's new songs just rip your heart out and show it to you.
plus, it's funny seeing them when you haven't seen them for a year or
so, when you're maybe used to seeing them 3-4 times a year. it's like
seeing an old friend that you miss, and then when you finally get
together, it's like no time has passed at all... and in amy's case,
they're still wearing the same clothes. :)
anyhow. glad to be back. hope everybody's doing well. i know i'm not
alone in saying i can't wait for the new acoustic record.

hello all,
strange request, i know: does anyone out there have the chickenman
transcript from the warner theater in erie, pa, on april 15th, 1995 (the
ranting and raving amy did mid song)? i know it had been posted here back
in the day, and i've lost my copy!
upon taking my boyfriend to the wolf trap show the other night (his first,
my 14th, and them playing chickenman live, of which he always makes fun, but
likes the song!), he asked why the heck it's called chickenman. the erie
show boot does a great job of explaining it, but, it's not the best quality,
so, i thought it'd be great if he had words to read while listening to the
10 minutes of ranting that amy does! it's so great!
please email me privately at grebe@talking-dog.com

hi all,
in this week's (8/9/01) edition of salt lake city
weekly (a local alternative newspaper) there is an
article about tipping. the author is apparently a
server at a restaurant here in town (he doesn't
mention which one)and his article makes numerous
references to the tipping habits of various
celebrities. one snippet from the article is about
emily, it says:
"emily, from the indigo girls, you wouldn't let us
take your picture in public. i went to the mountain.
i went to the doctor. i graded your performance.
you're a bad tipper."
that is all it says about emily. this particular
article is not in the online edition of the newspaper,
but for you locals it is on pg. 40 of the print
edition.
thought y'all would be interested,

i've been trying to keep track from the setlists people have posted. here's
what i've got so far. i've tried to match up songs people mentioned without
knowing what the title really was with information we picked up later.
new amy
--------------
yield -- (aka "you are so self-spoken"; aka "broken" [really: "you are so
baroque"]; aka "take some time")
starkville -- (aka "without a heart"; "haunted by geography"; "it took a long
time to become the thing i am to you/and you won't tear it apart without a
fight, without a heart"); about struggling with southernness; about a neighbor
who has a confederate flag in his yard; starkville, ms is the home of the
university of mississippi where the confederate flag is essentially the school
flag (team nickname is "the rebels")
*mountain top -- (aka "i've been lonely/are you lonely too?")
?same as i(t)? -- this may be something written on a setlist that was skipped
over and not an actual new song that's been performed
* - "mountain top" has been around for a while (pre-cons and pre-stag) but has
never been recorded.
"devotion" (amy) doesn't count as a new song since it's included on the
retrospective cd (along with emily's "leaving"). by the way, have they ever
performed "leaving" live? it didn't seem to get the attention from them that it
got from us.
.....................
new emily
----------------
deconstruction of love -- ("we're sculpted from youth but keep chipping away at
the cracks")
she's saving me -- ("it feels like no fear, it feels like no doubt") about her
sister, carrie, who suffered from anorexia, and passed away a year or two ago
you've got to show -- ("we should both agree we're both afraid/.../would you
meet me halfway"?)
..................
please correct any of the above. in some people's posts, it seems like
"starkville" and "without a heart" are two different songs, but people may have
meant "nashville" where they said "starkville".

i have a zip file of four soc's including the erie one mentioned on the list.
i think they are on the web somewhere..anyone?
but the best one is 4-12-95 athens, ohio and just for the heck of it...here
it is : )
from diane...bless her heart... :)
"the following is amy ray's chickenman stream of conciousness transcribed
verbatim from my boot of the athens oh show 4-12-95. (amy's birthday) it was
so cool i thought i'd share with y'all. warning: it's long." <<sorry >> =)
"i wrote this song when i was thinking about all these spare parts
you see lying in the middle of the road. i've been obsessed with dying ever
since i can remember. realizing that i was existing for a short ammount of
time.. so when i decided to make traveling my way of life i was suprised.
cause
when you're moving all the time you tend to run into things... alot. you see
a lot of things that other people are running into alot, which is a
very...interisting thing to see. so this song kind of takes place- and were
going to start from georgia take this tour, and were gonna go up the eastern
seaboard get up into canada somewhere. and were driving this big maroon ford
van. and were gonna go from georgia and pass through all the southern states
and end up somewhere in the middle of texas...texas is sort of a wierd place,
you know? cause it's sort of the bastion of everything i've never
believed in...yeah there's these little bits of enlightenment just hanging
around for no reason. it's really incredible because if you open your mind
up to it, it's a really cool place. so here we are, were sitting in houston
were going to play at this place and it's um, this bar and were real small,
real small. and were playing at this bar that's about half the size of this
stage maybe. and were going to sleep that night at this guy's house it's
kinda like this..brothel, sorta. and it's getting harder and harder as this
is going on. i'm thinking about all these things. i was thinking anout this
woman i saw
when i was running down the street in toronto and she was beat up by a bunch
of people and she was left layin' there and i walked right by her...walked
right by...walked right by. movin'. gotta be somewhere i gotta get
somewhere, guys. i was running, you know, i gotta time my mile. i can't
stop. i can't stop. so i 'm thinking about this, thinking about this. i was
thinking about- i was in the middle of the desert this one time and this
family of prarie dogs was crossing the road and i thought "aww shit" 'cause i
couldn't slow down cause i was goin so fast. and i just hit every single one
of them. i thought,
"this is unbelievable!" i mean, how could i? the law of probability was
totally against me. they were runnin' as fast as they could and -just-
five!! one, two three, boom!! oh god, seriuos karma trouble. so i'm in this
car and i'm thinking about all these things. and were driving and were
driving and were driving and it;s kinda like, you cover your eyes when you
see something that's lying in the road and you go "oh it's just a bag- a dead
bag okay, that's
cool, i can handle that." and you see something else and it's like a tire.
okay, no problem, so you open your eyes cause you figure everything is going
to be this inanimate object and it's no big deal. and then all of a sudden
you're standing in front of this dog with it's guts hanging out and you think
"aww shit!" and you wanna close your eyes, close your eyes. these are the
things you think about, these are the things i think about. and these are
the things that are obsessing, obsessing. were counting all these things and
putting
numbers on everything. okay, so moving on, moving on. okay, so we go to
this flea market cause i'm thinking at least theres one thing in the world
that's gonna lift your spirits when you have 10 dollars in your pockets and
you go to a flea market and buy something. i know it's material it's very
material but it's true. i mean you can be as spiritual as anybody in the
whole world and
you're still gonna feel that way, i don't care what you say. so we go in
this flea market and it's cool, it's cool. and we come outta that an we go,
and we see next door and we see this big field layed out with all these
tables and there's stuff everywhere. there's stuff all over these tables
-it's like this endless, endless tables! and i'm like, "this is amazing!
this yard sale on the side of the highway! i can't believe it this is so
great!!" and i'm looking through all this stuff,i'm thumbing through books,
looking at the cameras and the binoculars and the old motorcycle parts and
bicycles and hopefully the stratocasters(sp?) that are layin' in somebody's
attic that i'm
gonna buy for five dollars. and i'm thinking about all this stuff and i'm
thinking, okay, okay. so this man walks out of this trailer and i look over
and i see him and i'm like (awed whisper) "wow!... look at this guy! he is
really cool looking!!" it just strikes me right in the heart. he's got this
really cool long hair and it's matted and tangled and it's got bugs and dirt
and all this shit is all in his hair and he's really cool! and he's wearing
these old clothes and i'm thinking, "i am so middle class i am so middle
class i am so middle class!" i'm looking at this guy and i'm thinking, "how
can i relate? i can't relate! i gotta relate! i gotta relate!" cause this is
someone i'm supposed to meet my whole life! so, i'm gonna meet this guy and
i'm gonna talk to him and it's gonna be really great. and i'm thinking, what
can i say? okay, what i'm going to say is...i'm going to buy something and
he's going to be really happy and this is really condisending, i'm thinking,
this is really arrogant, you know? i'm gonna buy something from him and he's
gonna appreciate me so much that he's gonna want to talk to me. how
materialistic can you
get? what an asshole i am. so, i'm thinking this- i'm gonna do it anyway, i
don't care. so i pick up this book and say, "how much is this book?" and he
says, "that's not for sale." i think, "oh, great." so i pick up something
else and hand him that and i say, "how much is this?" and says, "that's not
for sale either." and i say,"well, what is for sale? what can i buy? i mean
all this
stuff, i mean, i really want to buy something today, you know, burnin' a hole
in my pocket." and he says, "you can't buy anything, you're standing in my
front yard." oh, great! i feel like a complete jerk now. i'm trespassing.
i'm rude. i'm a white middle class american girl. yeah (chuckle) and i've
offended this man, too. and i'm thinking, how can i make it up to him? i've
got these things inside my soul that i've never told anyone and i'm gonna
tell this guy. i'm gonna make this connection. so, i'm thinking all these
things that i'm gonna ask him and tell him. what do i want to say? okay, so
we're
standing in the middle of this field and were looking up into the sky-and did
you ever think about what's come before you, and what's coming after you? and
that's no big deal, that's no big deal. what i want to say is, i present
myself as this peaceful person all my life and what i really want to do is
run down the street with a machine gun and shoot all these assholes that are
getting in my way! and when i'm driving down the road and i see some guy with
a bumper sticker and it says something i don't believe in, what i really want
to do-i mean i try to be understanding-but what i really want to do is go
faster and faster and ram into the back of his car!!!!! and do you ever think
about the animals you see laying in the middle of the road that some jerk
runs over without even thinking about it-and their guts are hanging out! and
they're howling and they're barking and they're kicking and they're
scratching,
because you were going 85 miles an hour when you should have been going
55!!!!!!!! andyou feel bad because what you want to do is slow down...slow
down. and
what i want to do is i wanna go faster! i wanna go faster! i wanna have sex
in the middle of nowhere!!! ( next line indecipherable due to crowd cheers)
i want to be the worst person i could ever be in my whole life. and i want
to be black. i want to be red, i want to be yellow!!!!!! but i just walk away
because it'stoo much. i was on the road to austin..."
so, yes, i have this on cd which is even better.

hey,
don't know if this got posted to the full list or just to me individually as a
reply, but "starkville" and "without a heart" are definitely two different
songs. (plus, ole miss is really in oxford, ms; mississippi state is the one in
starkville, so there went my pet theory out the window, anyway.)
>from lori baron:
>
lb>some random lines from starkville:
lb>
lb>"i'm in love with my mobility, but sometimes this life can be a drag."
lb>"i called you just to say ... the morning birds are singing . . . i could
lb>not do them justice . . . then i hung up the phone and fell back to sleep."
lb>"i called you just say ... my regrets have become distractions . . . i could
lb>not do them justice. . . then i hung up the phone and fell back to sleep."
lb>...[hiding from?] a local band of troubadors, and the homecoming queen, she
lb>come right on in...i slipped out the back into the rain, and i was running
lb>for my health...and [down the road] the headlights turned to moonlight...
lb>and i was running by myself.
lb>
lb>it's an amazing song.
thanks, lori (and everyone else) for the corrections.

i booted wolf trap, but the people behind me ruined it with their idiotic banter and their determination to get recognition for their love of the black guitar that amy has been playing forever... i swear that the only 4 words they knew were "kick ass" and "black guitar." oh, and the guy was an excellent belcher. <sigh> i tried to work around their trl-like behavior ("woooooooooooooo! you kick ass! that was kickass!"), but the show is not recoverable.

hey people :-)
just wanted to let y'all know that i was looking through the august issue of
utne reader tonight, and i saw a quote from amy on the very last page. it's
always great to see her name mentioned. it is actually a quote from the most
recent (i think most recent) interview with her from girlfriends magazine:
"i can sometimes identify with things our society sees as stereotypically
male, the male part of myself. when i would catch myself objectifying my
girlfriend or leering at women in the street, i was offended by myself for
relating to that kind of energy."
anyway, just thought i would share.
have a great weekend!

grumble... the "lifetime" forwarding email service i have used for over 5
years now has, without notice, switched to a pay service if you want more
than 25 messages in a day. i am extremely not happy about this, but oh
well. even if you pay their service fee, you are limited in how much email
you can receive, so it is with great unhappiness that i announce the end of
clumber@bigfoot.com as my email address.
please change your address books to reflect this. unless you don't have me
in your address book, then you can just thumb your nose at me or delete
this message with a flourish.
the new email address is trace@olywa.net
i may try to find another lifetime address, since that one depends upon us
keeping our same isp, but since we have had the same isp now for 4 years or
more, that is not a big deal as yet.
i apologize for the hassle.

ok, i'm bored =) got to get back in the copying business. carla b. asked me at the wt show if i had a disc of just chickenman socs and i said no, i am not into compliation discs...of course as i recalled it the next day, that was a big fat lie. there was that problem child thing.
so i decided to put as many socs on disc as i could find including the new haven, erie, sydney and athens ones and also throw in a few touch me fall and kid fears "i am not complacent" goodies and one in particular <<cortez the killer>> from the shirk show (do not pop this in the player while you are driving. i hereby enter my waiver =). em was said to give a look at amy during this particular piece which said "are you sure you are alright?"
it came out to be 2 80-min cdrs full of all this wonderful stuff and it is available. anyone who knows the drill and knows my street addy, go ahead and send your blanks...no need to email me. anyone else, inquire within.

to those of you who are planning on going to the concert tomorrow
night at first ave, i thought i would share what i learned today. the
doors open at 5:30 and the concert has to be finished by 7:45 pm
because danceteria starts at 8pm. so its a really early concert. i
had been planning on getting there at 8, since for the melissa ferrick
concert there, doors opened at 7 and she didnt come on until 11pm.
but i guess on nights there is danceteria, the concerts finish early.
really early.

if you go to the daemon site it says the following for
tomorrow night.
6:30 - 7:15 the butchies
7:30 - 8:30 le tigre
9:00 - 10:00 amy ray and the butchies
i'm assuming this is accurate as it's in regards to
the live webcast. usually danceteria doesn't start
until late when there is a concert, but i'm trying to
call to find out more info.

so i've almost been like a lurker lately. sorry about that y'all :)
set lists: rose's was not as written on setlist, this is according to the
lists.
rose....
after the whatever (err, i dunno what that was either)
came soft parts, per my request. rose was on 2 hours sleep and totally out
of it, she even said she was not herself. she started with what i thought
was a patty griffin song fooling around tuning but i couldnt figure out
which one so maybe i'm wrong
*whatever
*here i go - this was way fun :) gotta love big hair covers
*fell - nope didn't play it
*cowboy - dude, i cant remember if she played it, i'm no help
*mary lee - no playin this one
*angel - didn't play this around this time she *did* play a patty griffin
song, moses
*polliwogs lament - she played this one, and this was the time, i think,
where she flirted w/ a cute girl in a straw cowboy hat, she also mentioned
getting drunk on 2 hours sleep
*olga - sing along fun, jilly c was holding up a cell phone for someone in
boston and rose invited jill on stage so she could talk to the person on the
phone, get her to sing the next verse but you couldnt really hear. it twere
funny.
butchies - sorry i'm still not all knowing about butchies songs, but they
sure are fun :) i dunno what to say.
*anything
*insult
*galaxy is gay - mels intro was fun, shes sick so all sexy voiced
*freaks
*more rock- this might be where they played a new song. you couldnt dance
to it, it was more ballady. they said its rush-like
*forget
*glory
*it's over
amy ray
*jonny rottentail - she broke like 5 mandolin strings, did half the song
acapella w/ clapping and the crowd clapping. after the song she said "i
should have changed the strings before the show." as well as "not to ruin
the experience for you, but we played w/ sonic youth once and they take
razor blades to their strings before the show."
*become you - this is the song about the confederate flag, for the next ig
album. she would have played yield too if she hadn't broken the mandolin
strings
*lazy boy - solo w/ electric, she wanted us to sing w/ her, it sounded
pretty she told us. she was touched :) heh
amy ray & butchies
*late bloom
*black heart today
*laramie - damn this was awesome, amy was all gritting her teeth and they
were all so passionate.
*mtns of glory
*measure of me - amy was talking about the date w/ the guy. i asked what he
thought of the song, and she said "i dont think he knows. its a secret"
and then i did the *shhhhh* sound, and they laughed and mel said "wow,
they're on call tonight!!"
*hey castrator
*lucy stoners
*ever fall in love - it was so cute, they were all jumping together and
stuff, all hoppy and amy and kaia (whom all my friends are in love with now)
were jamming back to back
*on your honor - i'm really liking this song, yeah, and i was happy cuz amy
told us it was about the woman who was killed in colombia and thats what i
thought it was about.
*refugee - fun fun
they did a butchies song as an encore cuz they just couldn't leave us w/out
one :) we wouldnt take no as an answer. they still love ann arbor, though
were werent quite as crazy as last time, not quite as loud, i assume many
there were quite tired from mich fest.
pre show fun- waiting in line was a dang hoot. we bonded w/ the 3 people in
front of us. i polka danced for entertainment. men and women ran by in
womens underwear, hmmmm. a guy walked by w/ a ceramic head on a post,
artwork for the gallery down the street. a guy was practicing the bagpipes
and i wrangled him over to play for us. rosie ate banana bread my friend
and i made. we talked about patrick swayze movies w/ rose. i tried to get
amy to pose for w pic w/ the head. she had to get mandolin strings from her
car, but obviously didnt even change them. i also asked if she too wanted
banana bread. i asked mel too. they didnt bite. oh well, it made a good
after concert snack dammit!
after- i got me a pic w/ amy, oh yeah. :) i'll try to get the pics up
maybe or something. i think that indigohio can put them up or something.
don mentioned that. i didnt take lots, didnt want to be annoying so far up.
boioboi i cant write worth crap. or hear, i cant do that either. i
seriously wonder if i sustained permanent hearing damage this weekend, w/
michelle malone on friday, a club on sat and then this on sunday. oy.
ok, so i wanna get hour photos now.
carol ann (call me carol)

i have been off line for a few weeks and i expected to come back to loads of
messages about the in store signing q and a and set that amy did at atomic
records in milwaukee tonight. it was amazing!!!!
i have a boot and soem photos but i don't know how they turned out yet
(obviously), she played johnny rotten, the new one about her conflicts in
regard to being southern, lucy stoners, black heart today and my favorite off
of stag which for soem reasn i'm blanking on the name of the "i won't be a
pawn" one. she was late cause she got in chicago traffic and was really
apologetic. she answered questions while playing and i asked her about
reckless youth. she said she was thinking about her cat when she wrote it and
how he was old and probably didn't think much of anyone. she sang it, she
said to test out an 8 track she'd gotten. she said she was screaming the
whole time. then she said it would have been better if we doidn't know the
story behind it. she was generally really funny, she said that the performer
she would most like to play with would be elvis. jiust even as a backup
singer. she also said that aside from emily the butchies are her favorite
artists to play with. she said they were, as a set, exactly like emily is.
she had wanted to play a gig in milw with them but apparently kaia has family
here and they were all sick and needed a day off so it didn't happen. she
also said she was a redneck and that conflicted with the fact that she's not
a racist. all of this was much funnier when she said it. after that at the
signing, i gave her this weird promo cd to sign, the one with a picture of
her in a dress. because i already have a signed copy of stag and she was
like, i don't even know what this is and then she looked up at me and said,
oh, i know you. but what's your name?(last time i talked with her, at the
riverside theatre in milw, she said oh i remmeber you and i said you do not!
and she said, yes i do, i know your face--this time i was much cooler and
didn't accuse her of lying when she said she knew me) and i said sarah and
she said with an 'h" and i was like, "yes because i get very upset if there
isn't one." (everyone always spells my name sara which i just hate because
well i do--sorry major digression) and i asked if she minded if i took her
picture and she said no not at all and i took her picture as she was talkign
with my friend megan. then on the way out i said thanks for remembering me
and she said yeah. goodbye sarah.
megan made me wait for two blocks before i started screaming.
now i can stop replaying the part of 12 curfews where she introduces sara lee
just to hear her say my name. i can just replay today in my head. (yes i'm a
dork)
can't wait till the madison wi show!!!

when i heard this at the bethlehem show there were about 10 very loud women
behind me. they shouted their conversations to each other during songs that
they weren't as familiar with. for the most part their behavior was not
terribly offensive, they were just really excited to be there. i don't
think they realized how rude they were. anyway, i turned around during
she's saving me and nicely whispered could they quiet down so we could hear
the song. the loudest, most restless one just couldn't keep herself
contained, and a minute later she was talking again, saying, "what's this
song about anyway?". perfect question, perfect timing. i turned around
again and told them i understood that emily was inspired to write the song
after the death of her sister a few years ago. the group was finally silent
and listening.
only problem - through all of the talking i missed about half the words. i
know they were posted here a few weeks ago. does anyone have them handy to
send to me? if not i can check the archive, but i thought i'd check with
y'all first. it was really a beautiful song and i'd love to know the lyrics.
thanks,
susan

hi all,
i am delurking to offer up a freebie for all those
interested...
when i went to my first ig concert in albany, new york
last year (august 12 2000) i picked up about 30 free,
programs that were just hanging around in a box at the
end of the concert. i just found them again....so if
anyone wants one just e-mail me.....
they are black & white, 8 pages, about 6" x 9" size.
indigo girls photo on front and 3 pages of writing
about them, then a small michelle malone photo and one
page of writing about her. nothing fancy but
interesting to anyone who collects these things, or a
great souvenir for those who were there!!
let me know, it's first come first serve, tho i will
put a few by for digesters!

mark me down for twice -- northampton and newport. what an incredibly
beautiful song. i think it's only natural for all of us to feel sad since
we know
what this song is about. i know that most of us don't know emily
personally,
but through her music i think that both she an amy have become like special
friends to us - so when something as tragic as a loss or a sickness occurs
- it
effects many of us - i know it effects me.
i think all of the songs were great - the harmonies reminded me of the old
days -
going back before they were signed with epic. i'd have to say my favorites
(being
the emily person i am) are she's saving me, you've got to show (love the
jazz feel
to that one) and deconstruction of love. i also loved starkville(?) and
yield but the
words don't seem to stick in my head as much so i can't remember what they
are about.
happy tuesday

okay here we go....
this is my boot offer for the three california shows, anaheim and both san
diego shows. right now i'm really interested in just doing b&p's, with some
limited trading if you have anything i want ;) but usually it's easier for me
to do b&p's, since i normally get a pretty big response from these.
if you got my boots from last year then you know what to expect.... these
tapes actually sound better than last year's since i bought a new tape
recorder :) all shows are 110min (the michelle sets are all 45 mins, so if
you want those you need to send extra tapes).
show lowdown:
anaheim 7/28 - sounds pretty good with crowd noise in the background. people
were pretty noisy - screaming and hooting... but it's all in the background
(not the foreground of the recording) so it's not too bad. you can hear me
singing off-key during the sing-a-long parts (the rest of the time i keep my
mouth shut :p)
setlist:
least complicated, three hits, power of 2, gone again, virginia woolf, i
don't wanna know, deconstruction of love, shame on you, get out the map,
starkville, watershed, yield, em solo: philosopy of loss, faye tucker, closer
to fine, kid fears, mystery, ozilline, amy solo: become you (or without a
heart - i'm still debating on what to call it...), she's saving me, galileo
michelle's set for this night is partial - missing the first few songs
---------------
san diego 7/30: sucks :( the recording itself is fine but as i said before
the two couples next to me seemed to believe they were at a bar and needed to
tell the other two their life stories.... so there is lots of conversation in
the foreground for 2/3 of the show until i finally was able to move up front.
my friend's working on digitizing it to see if she can get rid of the
talking, but i was listening to it last night and it's awfully prevalent so
i'm not sure if she'll have any luck.... so it's as-is at the moment. if
you're a completist (ahem, jude) then you're welcome to it... otherwise you
can live without it.
setlist:
gone again, least complicated, devotion, prince of darkness, three hits,
power of two, yield, get out the map, reunion, deconstruction of love, shame
on you, mystery, chickenman/bitterroot river (aka the mountain top), closer
to fine, starkville (it's about here when the recording gets a little better
- although there were chatty people up front as well), virginia woolf,
ozilline, she's saving me, i don't wanna know, galileo, kid fears
michelle's set for this night is complete and i was in the front row so the
girls are not talking through it but us rowdy michelle fans were enjoying
ourselves ;)
-------------
san diego 7/31: sounds pretty damn good. an occassional howl from the woman
standing next to me, but not too bad.
setlist:
hammer and a nail, ozilline, watershed, gone again, leaving, land of canaan,
power of 2, yield, least complicated, you've got to show, tried to be true,
deconstruction of love, chickenman/bitterroot river, cold beer and remote
control, starkville, get out the map, devotion, closer to fine, she's saving
me, shame on you, galileo
michelle's set is complete except for the very end of teen lament when my
tape ran out.
------------
so for b&p's: send me a blank tape (at least 110min for the ig sets) for each
show you want and enough postage for me to send the tapes back to you. (it's
easiest for me if you can send a sase all ready for me but just postage is
fine also.) please include a note that tells me what shows you want, where
i'm sending the tapes if no sase, and include your e-mail address in case i
need to contact you. i'm also going to do colored case liners on the computer
for each show so feel free to donate a buck for my printing costs if you'd
like liners. e-mail me for my address so i don't have to tell the whole list
where i live ;)
possible trades - here's what i'm looking for at the moment, so if you have
any of this and want to trade, e-mail me:
any barbara kessler
any allette brooks
recent rose polenzani
recent kris delmhorst
recent ellis paul
recent amy and the butchies
some dar from 1996
ig: 8/29/94 mesa az (swamp ophelia)
ig: 7/18/97 red rocks co (sots)
tori amos: boston ma orpheum 6/11/94
tori amos: phoenix az symphony hall 8/19/94
anyway, e-mail me for my address or any other questions :)

i've never been able to listen to she's saving me without crying. this has
been a very grief filled year for me. i've lost too many people who i loved
very much in such a short time. i don't know how emily can play it without
crying herself. it's really a masterpiece. i'm looking forward to the new
album, i hope they include it, i'm just pretty certain that it will be a
long time before i'll be able to hear it without my eyes filling up.

quick question for those who live in atlanta or for those familiar with. i'm planning on coming down to the big damen records show on the 25th. i usually stay at the holiday inn in decatur but it is unfortunatly booked. i would love some suggestions on an alternative. somewhat cheap, decent area, and easily accessible to the echo lounge. if anyone has any ideas i would greatly appreciate it! please email me privately.

actually at nff i was up really close when emily was
singing "ssm" and i could swear she was crying. (i am
a speechreader so i always pay attention to the
expression on people's faces) i really can't belive
myself how astonishingly beautiful this song is.

lynne,
i agree with you. i have listened to this song a couple of times and it
touches my soul. sorry for your losses this year. this too has been a hard
year on me. i have lost more this year and dealt with more that i ever
thought i could deal with. it is so nice we have the indigo girls music to
listen to in order to help us reflect and get perspective on this thing
called life.

the same thing.

due to some unfortunate family issues - i'm going to say it will be a bit
before i can remaster this onto cd (believe me - it was a priority, but
there is other stuff in my life that has emerged as really important) it
may be a week or two before i think about doing this.
..or i might get bored and do it sooner - it is not a issue of wanting to
withhold it from anyone - just too much going on for me to make any
committment with.
i cant do md -> md copies or else i would offer a clone to remaster.

hkfs,
i found this snippet of news from the website for lesbianation.com. thought
i would share.
paula
emily has her say
emily saliers, one part of the lesbian folk duo, the indigo girls, was so
angered by a recent column by lawyer and author ann coulter in usa today
("title ix defeats male athletes," the forum, july 25) that she had to
respond. in a letter entitled "don't blame title ix for male setbacks,"
published on august 2, she writes, "i read... [this] column on the law known
as title ix with jaw-dropping dismay. her ranting is an irresponsible and
harmful approach to the issue of equal opportunity in sports women's sports
are undergoing an evolution. increased participation and competitive
achievement are directly proportional to opportunity."
she continues later in the letter, "perhaps the most disturbing of coulter's
assertions is her statement that art is for girls and sports are for boys.
tell that to soccer star mia hamm, the forward for the washington freedom
who's considered one of the world's best female soccer players. tell it to
washington mystics forward chamique holdsclaw, one of the top players of the
women's national basketball association. tell it to the williams sisters,
venus and serena, american tennis stars."
and in closing, she adds, "lastly, while coulter is out there bashing
feminists, she should thank her sisters before her who joined a movement
that provided coulter herself a job in what would have otherwise been a
man's world."
you tell 'em emily!
